Whether life has thrown change into our path for reasons beyond our control or we decide on our own to set out in new directions, change happens. So it is with our homes.

Philip Kelly Deana Basile Kelly Publishers and Editors Tom Barrett Art Director Mark O’Day Advertising Sales

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus said that the only thing constant in life is change, and sometimes are lives can be perfect examples of that maxim. Whether life has thrown change into our path for reasons beyond our control or we decide on our own to set out in new directions, change happens. Often that is a good thing, as change can keep us alert, ready for new opportunities to learn and grow. When we can embrace change, we are prepared to set out on new pathways without apprehension. So it is with our homes. Once we have gotten our homes into a state we are happy with, inertia and the comfort of the familiar can make us a little passive. Before we know it, the routine of our favorite chair or our familiar habits can drain our vitality a little. In our lives, we often tread a fine line between comfort and stimulation—both of which can be positive or negative, depending on our situation—and that tension between the two plays out in our houses, too. We like the comfort of familiar things, but shaking things up in our home environments can be a wonderful tonic. As the places where we spend the majority of our time, our homes are sanctuaries, places where we should feel relaxed and secure. Yet we never want to let ourselves get too comfortable. In this year’s annual Amelia Islander Magazine “Home & Design” special issue, we are happy to feature two homes in which the respective homeowners made changes to their comfortable arrangements in order to seize something new and exciting. In the first, a couple on Amelia Island Plantation decided to open up the back of their house overlooking the marsh and expand it to take advantage of the extraordinary natural vistas surrounding them. They found a willing collaborator in Vic Buscaino of Plantation Housing Corp. In the second, a couple living and working in London wanted a rejuvenating change of atmosphere, so they bought a penthouse condominium on Amelia Island. An empty shell, the condominium was transformed into a beautiful island retreat for the homeowners, with indispensable design help from an old friend now based in Jacksonville. Also this month, we look at some new design trends that will influence homes in 2015 and take a look at changes in technology that are quickly reshaping how we will interact with our homes in the future. In addition, we preview the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival’s exciting Winter Series, enjoy a Cumberland Island campout with Karen Miller, and much more. See you around the island!

hen Janet and Alex approached Vic Buscaino from Arthur Rutenberg Homes/Plantation Housing Corporation about remodeling their home on Walker Creek, Buscaino knew they would make a great team. They were visionaries, like himself, who could see the vast potential in such a home, and he was eager to take on the project. The couple had purchased the house in 2012, after having vacationed on Amelia Island since the 1980s. Once completed, it surpassed the owners’ expectations for quality and design.

“The marsh views were the most important thing, and the original home had a traditional vaulted roof,” says Buscaino. “We opened up the back of the house and expanded it, changing the roof line and creating the amazing views you see here today.” The house was built in the 1980s, and then renovated in the 1990s, then again in the early 2000s. Still a beautiful home, the space was broken into rooms that didn’t work for the new owners. They wanted the house opened up, so the views could be taken in from every part of the house, while

still keeping with much of the original footprint. Along with architect John Dodd, the “team” created a modern and extraordinary four bedroom, fourand-a-half bath home like no other on Amelia Island. Originally, the kitchen was located near the entryway of the house, with a hallway. This space was converted to an office and exercise room. The newly

of birds and wildlife pass outside the house throughout the day, offering an extraordinary window into the island’s marsh ecosystem. A new master suite was created from a pre-existing living area, utilizing the spectacular vaulted ceiling and beams, which were painted and updated. The room also features a fireplace and an unusual and clever closet with an open ceiling that allows for additional light and space. The attached bath boasts a remarkable tub made from engineered stone, which looks more like a breathtaking piece of art. The home actually has two master suites, and two guest rooms, one of which was built above the garage, for a peaceful and private retreat. Nicole Herbert from Vignette Design provided many of the design elements, including an amazing king size bed by Caracole, which hides a flat screen TV. With the touch of a button, the television is lowered into the foot of the bed, completely out of sight. Mike Gleason of Amelia Creative Cabinetry

was another “team” member, who played a huge role in the home’s special touches. A custom cabinet in the great room divides the space without using a wall. He also designed the kitchen cabinets and other built-in shelving and storage cupboards within the house. Susan Boylan from California Closets designed the custom “his and hers” spaces for the home owners, measuring everything precisely, bringing the idea of custom closets to new heights. Janet and Alex wanted a monochromatic color scheme that would enhance the stunning natural vistas, with touches of color here and there for interest. Chabot Painting provided a professional finish in every room, while Buscaino’s crew created all the home’s custom stonework, marble counters, and wooden floors. “This was truly a team effort,” says Buscaino. “The owners and all the vendors we worked with were amazing. It was a pleasure to see so many ideas come together to create this astonishing home.”

BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY HOME SERVICES LAUNCHES ON AMELIA Prudential Chaplin Williams Realty has recently re-branded their business as Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, based in Irvine, California, is a brand-new real estate brokerage network built for a new era in residential real estate. The network, among the few organizations entrusted to use the world-renowned Berkshire Hathaway name, brings to the real estate market a definitive mark of trust, integrity, stability, and longevity. Berkshire Hathaway Home Services was named “Real Estate Agency Brand of the Year” in early 2014 by consumers in the 26th annual Harris Poll EquiTrend® study of the largest real estate networks. “Hugh Williams and I thought long and hard about this transition and considered all options,” explains co-owner Dee Chaplin. “The Prudential name has served us and our customers very well for 16 years. When Prudential made their decision to concentrate on insurance and financial services, we saw an opportunity to consider alternatives. After much discussion, we and our agents all agreed the Berkshire Hathaway name, with its recognition and resources, would serve everyone better within the real estate marketplace.” Berkshire Hathaway Home Services will continue to serve the real estate needs of Amelia Island and all of Nassau County, with 40 topclass agents. hat makes a good gallery? That is a question that gallery owner and artist Sandra Baker-Hinton often asks herself. Amelia SanJon Gallery includes artwork by Sandra and many different artists – along with a working studio and a frame shop—so it can be a challenge sometimes to ensure the gallery doesn’t get too cluttered with interesting art! When Sandra opened, her idea of a good-looking gallery was a clean area with uncluttered space, much like an art museum, with space to show off the art. But, as time went by, she began to take in more and more artists whose work she admired. Then there was the vintage copper jewelry that caught Sandra’s eye and has been a big hit with customers. “I think the copper adds so much to the already sumptuous variety of jewelry made by our many jewelry designers,” says Sandra. “Then there are the printmakers, who were a very important part of the first year the gallery was in operation. One day, a great young metal sculptor came by, and I couldn’t resist having some of those in my gallery, too!” Since Sandra

does acrylics and watermedia paintings, it made sense to include other painters who do exceptional work in other media, especially oil painters and fiber artists, along with wood, pottery, and glass. Sandra finds great pleasure to hear someone open the front door and exclaim, “Wow!” Many of her customers spend hours in her gallery because there is so much to see. “We have at least sixty artists exhibiting here,” says Sandra. “The space is not always neat and tidy because it is also my working studio, and, like most artists, I often have several projects going at one time. I may even have an orphaned animal tucked behind my desk!” Sandra also does framing for her own paintings and photographs, and for many of her customers. “A gallery needs to stay exciting for the owner as well as for customers who come through the door for the first time,” says Sandra. “Come by and see for yourself!” Amelia SanJon Gallery is located at 218 Ash Street. hen Martinique Lemke was working in Japan as a chef for The Ritz-Carlton, Osaka, little did she know that in a few short years she would be creating gourmet delights for furry clients in Fernandina Beach. When Martinique walked into Redbones Dog Bakery one day to buy treats for her dog, owner Cindy Hawkins offered her a job to help expand the bakery. In less than two years, Martinique purchased the entire operation, and, eight years later, Redbones is the only gourmet dog bakery in Northeast Florida. “At Redbones, we are all about healthy pets,” says Martinique. “Everything we sell in the store is all-natural, with no preservatives, fillers, or by-products. There is no sugar, soy, or corn in our products, which, by the way, are all made in the USA.” Martinique herself makes thirty-five varieties of treats using only healthy, human-grade ingredients, including goodies like ice cream cones, cupcakes, s’mores, and biscuits all for dogs. Redbones also carries cat treats, cat food, and other quality pet products. Redbones is a proud corporate sponsor of the Nassau Humane Society. Every Saturday, Redbones hosts an on-site adoption called “Puppy Kisses” in its “barking lot,” where you can hold an adorable, adoptable puppy from the Nassau Humane Society and get covered in puppy kisses for a $1 donation, and maybe even find a new friend. For more information, stop by Redbones at 809 South Eighth Street, visit their website at www. redbonesbakery.com, or call (904) 321-0020.

Patti Shelly-Lohman met her husband, Terry, in Oregon many years ago. He was an Amelia Island native, and the couple knew they would eventually move back to Fernandina Beach. They built a home on a piece of property here on the island, and the two of them opened Amelia Audiology in 2000. Patti is a Doctor of Audiology, and Terry is a Licensed Audiology Assistant. They work together at their office in the 14th Street Professional Plaza, providing hearing health care, including digital hearing aids for all ages. Dr. Patti Shelly-Lohman earned her Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree from Arizona School of Health Sciences, a division of Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Audiology and is a fellow of the American Academy of Audiology (AAA). “We provide hearing instruments from all major hearing aid manufacturers and provide cleaning and repair service for all makes and models of hearing aids,” says Patti. “We also offer comprehensive diagnostic hearing evaluations for all ages. Our youngest patient is a newborn, and our eldest is 104 years old!” Patti and Terry do not employ any staff at Amelia Audiology. “We love working together,” says Patti. “We are best friends, and after 31 years of marriage, we make a pretty good team!” When Patti and Terry are not working, you can find them searching for sharks’ teeth, fishing, and enjoying other outdoor activities. For more information, call (904) 491-1515, stop by their office at 1411 South 14th Street, or visit www.ameliaaudiology.com.

ive years ago, while visiting Amelia Island, Karen and Jim purchased a condominium at Dunes Club Villas on Amelia Island Plantation. They were living in London at the time and realized they needed help from a full-service design firm, so they enlisted the aid of Mike Bohaning of Glenda Wann Interiors of Jacksonville, whom they have known for over 40 years. Putting their trust in their friend, the couple were confident that Mike would take care of every detail while they were living and traveling on the other side of the world. The condominium was an empty shell when Karen and Jim purchased it, so it served as a blank canvas for a completely

new and cohesive design scheme. Since it is a penthouse unit, it boasts extraordinary perspectives of the island, from manicured golf courses and the Intracoastal Waterway with its lush, green marsh on one side to expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Karen’s main focus was that the home not overshadow these views, which were enhanced by the home’s ten-foot ceilings, large-scale windows, and four generous balconies. While working with Mike, Karen, who loves color, said she wanted a comfortable and inviting second home for her family, their friends, and their many guests. To Mike’s delight, Karen had discovered a classic document print from Schumacher and

Co., which was the beginning of the pleasing and comfortable color scheme for the couple’s winter home. A rich, terra cotta color on the walls highlighted the windows and views. Each room was individually decorated, including a neutral, restful, scheme for the den and vibrant blue and lime green for their daughters’ bedrooms. Other classic Schumacher fabrics were used for bedding and window treatments. Mike added designer touches to each room’s window treatments and custom bedding, with various decorative trims, buttons, and tapes, to give each room its own personality. An eclectic mix of furnishings provide each room with its own style. Other elements include custom built-in shelving in the living room (which hides audio equipment), which also features a bar with copper-toned mirrors to 28 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015

design trends New trends in home design and decorating for 2015 emphasize flexibility, maximizing existing space, and introducing new colors. BY KAREN MILLER

I

refine their wants and needs.” She cautions, though, that colors are never true online. “Pantone is universal and it has been a great aid for designers to customize pieces for their clients by getting the perfect tone. Most people do not see color the same, so Pantone is a good tool.” The Pantone name is known worldwide as the standard language for color communication from designer to manufacturer to retailer to customer. At the beginning of each year, the company releases their home color trend palettes. This year it consists of nine key palettes under an umbrella entitled “New Harmonies: Changing Themes in Color/Design Trends.” For example, “Style-Setting” uses fashion as inspiration for color and materials in the home, and it’s all about polish, poise, and finesse. The purple color family plays off against mahogany, off-white, gray and taupe, and picks up some shimmer with frosted almond and champagne beige. “Colors are my happy place,” says Branch. “I warm with texture and wood, or cool with metal and stone. I love a mix or a balance between hot and cold or warm and cool, depending on one’s personality. I can do that with any color palette.” Branch goes on to explain that getting locked into a color removes a lot of personality. Trends happen because people get tired of things, so a new trend emerges. Branch also suggests letting go of the industrial, neutral look of the early 2000s, as it’s almost as dated as the excesses of the 1990s. She also proposes that clients search out “green” companies like Cisco Brothers, who are green in all practices of their business. Repurposing existing items, like furniture, is a great way to recycle, as well as save money. And just like walls, a coat of paint can change the look of a piece of furniture and update an entire room. Color is the catalyst that can spark a purchase, define a space, and create the magic and mood of any home. “Home has to be a sanctuary,” says Branch. “Make it an ‘ahhhhh’ zone.” PHOTO COURTESY OF MCGUIRE FURNITURE

f you’re preparing to buy a home or redecorate your present home, top designers in 2015 recommend maximizing existing space, staying flexible, and thinking long-term to create a home that will remain beautiful and contemporary for years to come. Rooms no longer need set and specific designations. Homeowners are becoming more flexible about how they use space in their home so that it more fully suits their lives. To fit a family’s evolving needs, what was once an office can easily be converted into a bedroom when a couple decides to start a family.

Colors are the best way to keep a home updated throughout the years. A fresh coat of paint, new slipcovers, and accessories can renew a room overnight. Robyn Branch, designer/owner of Robyn Branch Design on South Eighth Street, suggests soothing colors, and using different tints and shades of a color to help layer a room. “Lavender, ice blue, gray, light greens, these are many of the colors my clients choose, “says Branch. “Those are popular coastal colors. I try to use them as neutrals, and then layer. Reds, oranges, and corals can be just as useful. I think each project is individual, and it is up to their designer to

Connected Home

With new technology connecting your home appliances to a phone or tablet, you can save energy, monitor security, and ask your refrigerator if you need milk. BY JULIE SIMMONS

I

magine receiving a text from your refrigerator reminding you that you’re out of milk, or texting your refrigerator and asking it if it has ketchup. Sounds crazy, right? Yet the truth is that many homeowners—even on Amelia Island—are already dialoguing like this with their home appliances. Running parallel with every other realm of technological advancement, homes are now beginning to utilize Cloud technology to connect homeowners directly with their home. So what exactly is a connected home? You might call it an automated home, where home features like appliances, lighting, and temperature are linked and controlled with smart devices such as computers, phones, and tablets to make your life easier, and sometimes realize significant energy savings. LG’s SmartThinQ Refrigerator is a great example of this. With its touchscreen that enables the owner to input purchased groceries which are then tracked, the user is alerted when items are expired, when an ingredient is missing from a recipe, or when the appliance needs service. The panel also plays a slideshow of family photos and displays the family calendar synced from

an e-mail account! Other appliances are also available with the same technology. For example, there are now models of ovens on the market that will text you when dinner is ready. A connected home is at its best when the homeowner doesn’t even have to rise from the couch to adjust the temperature, lights, music, or even the window shades. All of these features and more can be combined into a single remote control system. Local builder Burt Wright is seeing this in the form of video screens with touchpads located throughout the home. “These screens are capable of changing house temperature, pool temperature, lighting, and monitoring any security camera located on the home,” says Wright. Moreover, sensors are now available, like Bosch Sensortec products, which detect your home’s air pressure, humidity, and temperature, and communicate that information to your mobile application. Connected from page 47. Home security systems are also evolving to become fully consumer controlled and monitored, eliminating the need for third-party assistance. For example, iSmartAlarm offers contact sensors any homeowner can self-install on windows, doors, or even devices, which then communicate wirelessly with your smart phone for monitoring. Additionally, there’s an array of camera and motion detection products that operate similarly. “Many of Amelia Island’s out-of-town, second homeowners are monitoring their homes from afar and feeling comfortable that all is well while they‘re away,” confirms local builder Donna Lynne VanPuymbrouck. Parents are enjoying this technology, too, as they can monitor their children’s activities when the kids are home alone. The home’s water systems are evolving with new technology, too. According to ConsumerReports.org, heating water accounts for up to thirty percent of the average home’s energy budget. To lower energy use, tankless models of hot water heaters are available that can deliver increased efficiency and an endless supply of hot water, which is quickly heated as needed with a power burner as it runs through the heat exchanger. Your home is also protected from damage with new sensors installed near sources of water, which can alert homeowners to leaks or detect moisture before it’s too late. “Some of these products even shut off the water supply to the home when a leak is detected,” adds Wright. And the pool water is also in on the action. A&A Manufacturing offers an in-floor pool cleaning system that includes pop-up sprinkler heads built into bottom of pool to sweep dirt and debris without a vacuum. In fact, no part of the home is considered out of the network—not even your bathroom! Kohler’s Numi toilet is Bluetooth-enabled so that even here—on a heated seat—you can enjoy streaming live video! It’s 2015, ladies and gentleman, so be prepared for every possibility. And don’t forget to check your phone; your refrigerator may have texted you a shopping list!

ntering its fourteenth season, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival has become one the most prestigious music events of its kind, both nationally and in the Southeast. The AICMF features internationally acclaimed talent from across the globe to enrich the cultural life of Amelia Island, Jacksonville, and the surrounding areas. What began as a month-long festival held during the month of May, the concerts are now spread throughout the winter and spring, allowing chamber music lovers to enjoy an even more diverse selection of classical and innovative artists and performances. The 2015 season is the “year of the violin,” says Executive Director Dr. Joseph Marasco. “We kicked off our Winter Series in November with violinist virtuoso Rachel Barton Pine, performing a program of Bach and Paganini,” says Marasco. “Our January 31 concert features Anne Akiko Meyers, violin, with Max Levinson, piano, and Artistic Director, Christopher Rex, cello, in a concert called ‘From Russia to Broadway and the Movies.’ And, on March 1, Joshua Bell, regarded as the world’s best and most talented musician, will perform a concert called the ‘Joshua Bell Spectacular’ at Amelia Plantation Chapel.” Equally at home as a violin soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, and orchestra leader, Bell has earned the rare title of “classical music superstar.” “This is the year that we are getting back to our roots,” says Marasco. “These three violin virtuosos are the most outstanding in the world. This is what chamber music is all about.” But there are a lot more strings to be heard in the seven Winter Series concerts, scheduled for January 31 through March 29. On February 10, Amernet String Quartet will perform “a program entitled a “Grand Tour of Europe” at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, featuring the music of Wolf, Goldmark, and Chausson. The Christiania Trio, comprised of David Coucheron, violin, Julie Coucheron, piano, and Christopher Rex, cello, will perform the music of Beethoven and Piazzolla continued on next page.

at Café Karibo in a luncheon concert called “Archdukes and Tangos”. Terry Barber is a countertenor, a soloist whose voice ranges from baritone to soprano. He will be performing with Alina Kiryayeva, piano, in a concert called “Classical for Everyone” at Amelia Baptist Church on February 17. Just a few days later, on February 24, chamber music lovers will be treated to a foot-stomping grand old time when the Kruger Brothers, a fixture within the world of acoustic music, appear at Walker’s Landing at Amelia Island Plantation in a concert called “Strummin’ and Pluckin’ Like No One Else.” And, closing the Winter Series, Joshua Bell, violin, with Sam Haywood, piano, will perform a once-in-a-lifetime concert that is sure to be a sell-out, so get your tickets early! “Few other chamber music festivals will match the quality and depth of our 2015 line-up,” says Artistic Director Christopher Rex. “We have attracted such elite musical talent because the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival is widely recognized as one of the nation’s preeminent cultural events. Attaining this status is a tribute to our thousands of concert-goers, our generous sponsors and donors, and our dedicated corps of hardworking volunteers. This broad base of support truly makes the AICMF your festival, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to you!” For more details about the various concerts and to purchase tickets, call (904) 261-1779 or visit www.aicmf.com. www.AmeliaIslander.com

amazing azaleas With the “armchair gardening” season in full swing, consider native azaleas or other new plants for 2015 to add brilliant color to your garden. BY BETTY MORRELL

H

appy New Year! Now is the season for “armchair gardening,” as we imagine what we want our gardens to look like this year. Most of us have azaleas of one color or another, but how about native Azaleas? The Sunbow Azalea series is a native azalea that can be grown in full-sun to part-shade. It is a deciduous plant, but it is well worth having a few in the garden. There are three plants in this series. “Solar Flare” is a brilliant, spring bloomer, with neon yellow flowers and a light orange shade. It is hardy for our zone (9) and has an upright growth habit, reaching eight feet, with a width of up five feet. Like all azaleas, shape it after the spring blooms, which keeps the shrub at the height you want. Fertilize in early spring. “Solar Glow” has glowing orangered blooms with yellow shades. Like all of the Sunbow Native Azaleas, they are slow-growing. The last in the series is “Solar Ray.” It sports brilliant yellow, with orange flowers in spring. As with all these plants, water when needed and plant in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Or how about a delirious spring-

summer tapestry of multicolored flowers spreading over mats of apple green evergreen foliage? Most prolific in spring, “Fire Spirit,” the wonderful South African variety of Delosperma, is a drought-resistant, heat tolerant and alluring year-round perennial. This two-to-four inch variety’s vibrantly hued flowers, with inner bands of purple-pink that transition to glowing orange, reappear throughout summer. Delosperma is hardy for this area and grows well in full-sun. The plants will spread twelve to eighteen inches and can be used in borders, beds, and containers. Another newcomer for 2015 is a Digiplexis called “Illumination Flame.” This striking hybrid is the result of

55 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015

breeding between Digitalis “Foxglove” and “Isoplexis,” a Digitalis relative from the Canary Islands. This ground-breaking new hybrid is big, vigorous, long-blooming, and beautifully colored. The gorgeous spikes of big, multicolored blooms will add vibrant color to any bed, border or container, and they make splendid cut flowers. Quickly growing to its full height of three feet and width of eighteen inches, this Digiplexis grows orderly, denselypacked rows of flame-colored blossoms over a long period of bloom. Despite being sterile, these gorgeous flowers attract bees and butterflies, adding more interest to your garden. Plant Digiplexis in full-sun to partshade, in moist, well-drained soil. With little attention, this healthy hybrid thrives in a variety of conditions. Its only weakness is cold, due to its Canary Island parentage; it is hardy from zones 8 to 11. The cut flowers alone make this a must-have in the garden, even if you use it as an annual. As always, please email me at bamorrell@aol.com with any questions. And Happy Gardening!

The Surf

RESTAURANT & BAR

An island favorite since 1957, The Surf has a new menu with delicious seafood, steaks, and sandwiches, all served in its signature fun, beachy atmosphere. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

W

hen I moved to Amelia Island fourteen years ago, the first restaurant I visited was The Surf. I was told it was the place where the locals go, along with lots of island visitors, and, today, it’s still an eatery that makes me feel like I’m on vacation. With its delicious seafood, steaks, sandwiches, bar drinks, and beachy atmosphere, The Surf is a legacy restaurant that’s been around since 1957. I recently stopped by The Surf for lunch, and to meet up with their event coordinator, Lisa Presnell, and the restaurant’s new manager, Matthew Leipau. We had a lot of fun talking about the history of The Surf, and how it has evolved. Two years ago, it was purchased by George and Barbara Sheffield as a means to continue its operation and protect its legacy. Many improvements have been made to the property, and their new menu is terrific. We started our lunch with a plate of nachos, hot, crispy tortilla chips piled high with The Surf’s famous chili, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, olives, jalapenos, and grilled chicken. A perfect appetizer for three or four, savory and spicy, washed down with a Frozen Mango Margarita, recommended by our server, Michelle. The indoor restaurant has been updated and boasts a bright, tropical theme, along with comfy, new booths and tables. Our next course was Fried Chicken Salad, a plate of mixed greens, tomatoes, carrots, onions, and cheddar jack, topped with strips of fried chicken and honey mustard dressing. This is definitely a main dish salad, but could be shared by two or three.

I love that the salad vegetables were fresh and the tangy dressing homemade, and the fried chicken was very hot and crispy. Matthew suggested we share a rib-eye steak, and I liked that we could choose our own favorite side dishes. We decided on a loaded potato and mashed cauliflower. What a nice job the chef did with the steak! Coated sparingly with their house blend seasoning, it was cooked medium rare with a nice sear. The potato was an amazing creation, fluffy, with lots of cheese, and the mashed cauliflower was a tasty, carb-free alternative. Carbs or no carbs, no one can keep me away from my dessert. Lisa and I both decided that a slice of chocolate cake was in order, served a la mode with a dollop of whipped cream, a perfect ending to a perfect lunch with new friends. The Surf is set up to host special events for any occasion. You may hold your event outside or indoors, and there are unique banquet areas for privacy, if you desire. The Surf’s chefs, along with Matthew and his staff, will help choose a menu that’s just right for the event, whether it’s a wedding reception, birthday party, or fundraiser. There’s plenty of room for a band or DJ, dancing, and even a buffet. The Surf also hosts its own activities, like Karaoke Night, Trivia Night, Prime Rib Night, All-You-Can-Eat Wing Night, and Happy Hour every day, along with talented local bands. For a full entertainment schedule and to see their new menu, visit www.thesurfonline.com or call the restaurant at (904) 261-5711.

backyard adventure

camping on cumberland S close So l andd yett also l worlds ld away, C Cumberland b l d IIsland l d rewards with its bounty of rich history, outdoor activities, and remarkable wildlife.

STORY AND PHOTOS BY KAREN MILLER

A

few years ago, I went on a backpacking trip to the southern part of Cumberland Island. My friends and I had a spectacular time, so we decided to visit again, this time to the northern end. Cumberland Island is a surprisingly big island, and each time I visit, I experience something new. This weekend was no exception. My friends Cindy, Tom, and Paula live in Jacksonville and they cajoled a relative into taking us by boat up the Cumberland River, then to the Brickhill River, where we were deposited on shore. Overlooking the water is a primitive campsite called Brickhill Bluff, where we set up camp and then headed out to explore the area. A “main” road traverses Cumberland running north and south, and you can get anywhere you want to go using this comfortable, dirt road and the side trails that run off of it. From our campsite, we hiked a little over three miles to First African Baptist Church, taking the scenic route. The small, one-room church is where John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Carolyn Bessette were married in 1996. It was built in 1937 to replace a cruder structure used by former slaves from the High Point Half Moon Bluff community. After taking photos, we hiked back to our campsite, where the sun was just setting over the salt marsh.

Hungry from our hike, we cooked a simple dinner over camp stoves. No fires are allowed in the wilderness area, which was a blessing because the stars were a sight to behold that night! It is so rare to find such a pristine location where there is no light and, even better, no sounds of traffic. As we slept, we were visited by a few of Cumberland’s wild horses, who pawed and snorted outside our tents. In the morning, we packed up camp and headed to another site called Hickory

72 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015

Hill, located in the center of the island. In this area, you will find Willow Pond and the Willow Pond Trail, a very different environment from our riverfront, salt marsh camp site. Horses were wading in the pond, and we took care not to disturb them—but managed to get some great photos! On our way back to camp, we spied several armadillos and a young, diamondback rattlesnake on the trail. Even when small, most rattlers have a big attitude, so we allowed him to make his way into the brush, giving him a wide berth. That night, some deer came to our campsite, and we were thrilled to have seen so much wildlife in just one day. The next morning we hiked through a swampy area back to the main road, then on to Plum Orchard, a circa 1898 mansion built on Cumberland Island by Lucy Carnegie. A magnificent “Classical Revival” building of 22,000 square feet, we enjoyed touring the grounds, dotted with beautiful live oaks. After a quick lunch, our kindly boat captain picked us up at the Plum Orchard dock. There’s something magical about Cumberland Island, no matter how often we visit. Camping in the wilderness is just another way to get to know this captivating place. For more information about camping on Cumberland, visit www.nps.gov/cuis/reservations.htm or call 877-860-6787.

What does 20 years of exceptional health care really mean?

It means 9,042 babies were born here. It means 51,700 community members received hospital care. It means 64,792 had surgery. And it means 399,572 patients were treated for emergencies. But more than that, it means you count on us to provide you with exceptional care, our donors are grateful enough to contribute, and our employees are dedicated enough to provide the healing touch you really need. It means we are changing health care for good in Nassau County, and it means that the tradition of heartfelt care will continue. Happy 20th Anniversary Baptist Medical Center Nassau.
