The New Year is a time of renewed hopes and heightened expectations. Apart from our New Year’s resolutions, the colder weather and the momentary quiet after the Christmas holidays are especially conducive to individual reflection.

For gardeners, winter’s dormancy, combined with the New Year, creates the perfect time for reflecting on our gardens and considering some changes for the year ahead. As our regular readers know, in her “In the Garden” column, Betty Morrell often refers to this as the season of “armchair gardening.” During these cooler months, when the temperatures can dip below the freezing point at night, Amelia Islanders enjoy our own short winter dormancy – retreating to the indoors on one of our colder days, and perhaps turning on that gas-lit fireplace and pulling out our warm sweaters.

It is perhaps fitting that this, our annual “Home & Design” special issue, arrives during these winter months, which are a great time to reflect upon our home environment. For those of us who enjoy dreaming about updating our homes, we can engage in a bit of “armchair redecorating,” as we flip through some magazines while enjoying our favorite chair and a warm cup in our hands. In the first of our two featured homes, a complete renovation coincided with a major career makeover for the homeowner. It’s a story that inspires us to make a positive change in our lives, as well as in our homes. In the second, the homeowners wanted a fabulous interior décor that would utilize family antiques and an antique rug. The magnificent results are apparent in the “before” and “after” photos. And to inspire you to make some changes in your own home, our “Refreshing a Room” article offers tips from local interior specialists on how to fluff up your space without breaking the bank.

Also this month, our “Fernandina Faces” column features a wonderful couple, Carol Ann and Cal Atwood, both of whom are known for sharing their talents and dedication with the community. And in our “Backyard Adventure” column, Karen Miller peddles around Amelia to enjoy nature from Amelia’s network of bike trails. W

hen Kathryn Kelly took a casual stroll on an Amelia Island beach on Memorial Day in 2006, little did she realize that her life would soon be forever changed. She was attending a wedding at The RitzCarlton, Amelia Island that weekend.

While taking a walk on the beach, she came upon a ramshackle beach cottage that intrigued her, and immediately she thought about renovating the

bungalow, and then moving to Amelia Island permanently. Recently retired as the CEO of a global, multi-billion dollar company, Kelly was looking for something different to do.

But the bungalow itself was not perfect, and after a lot of consideration, Kelly decided to have the house torn down and a new one built on the property. The house was a hodge-podge of additions from over the decades, but the location and original layout were

ideal. When Kathryn’s daughter saw what she bought, she couldn’t believe it. “How could my mother ever live in such a dilapidated hovel!” she exclaimed.

Architect John Cotner and builder John Gorham tried to save the house, but Kathryn’s daughter was right— it was beyond being salvaged. But Kathryn saw something in the house, and, although it was going to be torn down, she wanted to keep it within the original, open footprint which was its major attraction. They took the house down to the foundation, and started over from scratch.

Kathryn’s goal with the house was to have a great central room to include living, dining, kitchen, and family areas, with all the other rooms emptying into that space. “I wanted the house to be a welcoming place for guests, who could have the privacy of their own rooms, if needed, and then come into the gathering place that is the hub of the home. There are four suites,” says Kathryn. “They are contained, and very private. There are no hallways. My favorite part of the house is the kitchen, with a huge center-island, perfect for

entertaining.” Kathryn, who had renovated several homes before this one, was pleased to see her vision for the house come to fruition, with the talent of local craftsmen and locally-sourced materials. She emphasizes that she feels land conservation is important, and she wanted her cottage to be simple and understated, fitting easily into the local island setting.

While she was waiting for the construction, Kathryn rented a condo at Ocean Place, then lived at the Ritz-Carlton, and there she began the process of getting to know the community. She became a member at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, joined a book club, and adopted a dog. And she was happy. Until she started thinking about what she always wanted to be when she grew up: an executive chef.

After earning three graduate degrees in public health, Kathryn had worked for the federal government for several years. She then co-founded a software company in the health field called General Health, which she later sold. From 1988, she spent a decade at the management-consulting firm Towers Perrin, advising corporations on health care benefits, and merger and acquisition strategy.

Her career was soaring. Nonetheless, as she was traveling on the corporate jet one day, she noted that while everyone else was immersed in the Wall Street Journal or Barron’s, she was secretly reading culinary magazines. Cooking had been her first love. Kathryn had won a scholarship from Pillsbury to attend a special culinary program in college some thirty years before. She had even considered buying a restaurant to pursue her The Shops of Amelia Island Plantation. dream job as a chef.

Chef Kathryn used this lovely setting to create an enchanting rehearsal dinner for her daughter.

Left: A dilapidated beach bungalow was torn down, and a new home was built, following the same footprint of the original construction. Great care was taken to preserve the dunes and natural beauty of the landscape.

But after she retired from her corporate position in 2008 and moved to Amelia Island to renovate her beach cottage, an unbelievable opportunity came along for Kathryn. She was offered an internship at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island’s SALT restaurant, where her passion for cooking was brought back to life, and then she attended the Culinary Institute of America at Hyde Park, New York. After completing her certification, she taught in the adult education group at the CIA, and she was appointed as their Director of Health and Wellness Initiates.

Only a few months after graduating from the CIA, Kathryn was offered a job as the Culinary Enrichment Director and Executive Chef for Oceania Cruises. She jumped at the chance to finally be a real chef, teaching cooking classes on two of Oceania’s ships, the Marina and Riviera. She also leads onshore excursions for her culinary students to exotic markets all over the world, in places like Nice and Sicily, teaching them how to

purchase the spices, meats, fruits, and vegetables to create the dishes they cooked together on the ship.

“I spend eight months on the ship, and four months on Amelia Island,” Kathryn says, happily. “Amelia Island is my home now. My daughter got married here. We even had the rehearsal dinner at the house.” Kathryn’s varied careers have taken her to travel and live in many glamorous places, but she feels something here that is different, and unexpected: a sense of community and belonging. “I may be working on a cruise ship, but Amelia Island is my anchor.”

Kathryn’s collection of art and objects that she has acquired while traveling make up much of what is interesting about her beach cottage. Her design and furnishings tell the visitor a little more about who Kathryn Kelly really is—well-traveled, a savvy business woman, talented executive chef, loving friend, and mother. “This is such a happy place,” says Kathryn. “I just want to share it with others.”

FIFTH ANNUAL AMELIA ISLAND RESTAURANT WEEK IS JANUARY 18–27 The premier dining event held annually on the island, Amelia Island Restaurant Week will kick off this year on Friday, January 18 and finish on Sunday, January 27. T

he Blue Door Artists are a unique collective of local, contemporary artists located in historic downtown Fernandina Beach. Unlike traditional galleries in the area, the Blue Door Artists are working studio artists who rent work space and actively create art at the Blue Door. They pride themselves on featuring some of the island’s finest selection of original art in a variety of media and genres to suit every taste and budget for collectors, who come from all over the world to seek out their gallery.

They also sell artsy gifts, jewelry, cards, and offer classes to other budding artists.

The nine artists who are featured at the gallery include Andrea Adair-Lasserre, Sharon Badenoch, Suzanne Batchelor, Theresa Daily, Elizabeth Dion, Lynette Holmes, Casey Matthews, Georganna Mullis, and Carol Sprovtsoff. The group established themselves in 2005, and, in 2007, the artists opened all their studios on a full-time basis. They are unique in that they are not in business with each other, but pool their resources to run the studios and gallery. The public is welcome to visit the gallery and witness many of the artists going through the creative process.

Many of the artists will gladly provide commissioned artwork based on a client’s individual space and budget, and private appointments are available for that.

Visitors to the gallery will get a preview of the artwork when walking up the stairs to the gallery, as each artist has painted a stair in their own particular style.

Once a month, the Blue Door Artists are open until 8 p.m. for Amelia Island’s festive Second Saturday Artrageous Artwalk. In addition to wine and hors d’oeuvres, visitors will enjoy speaking to the members of the collective, talented artists who work with various media including oil, acrylics, and water colors, plus pottery, glass jewelry, and even textiles.

The Blue Door Artists are a walkup gallery located on Centre Street between Amelia Island Coffee and Go Fish. Look for the crazy, colorful stairs. They are open Monday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (904) 491-7733.

D

ina Cuppett-Ross fell in love with a cottage at Amelia Park when she attended a benefit for Micah’s Place. When she found out that Brett Cater had decorated it, she decided that he would have to decorate her new home. Having downsized from a very large home on the Plantation to a newly constructed place at The Preserve, Dina and her husband, Bob, wanted to spend

more time traveling. They desired a place that was easier to care for, but a total redecorating project needed to include many of their family’s heirloom possessions, which included fine Oriental rugs and antique furnishings. “I wanted Brett to decorate the house using what we had, but adding his unique touches,” said Dina. “And we couldn’t be more pleased with the results!”

“I had a blast with the project,” stated Carter, who enjoyed the challenge of using one of the enormous Oriental rugs to “anchor” the main living room. “Everything worked well with the rug: the walls, light fixtures, the color package. Dina and Bob were great to work with!” Dina chose the colors and materials herself, and Carter worked with her to create an elegant and chic living space that brought out the couple’s personalities.

Dina and Bob moved to Amelia Island from The Netherlands, where Bob worked for Turner Broadcasting.

They discovered Amelia Island during a sales retreat with the company, and Dina fell in love with the island. Upon Bob’s retirement 11 years ago, the couple purchased a larger home, and then sold it when their children were grown. Dina, a nurse

practitioner by trade, who also headed up a Breast Cancer Awareness program in The Netherlands, was eager to get back into the medical field, volunteering at Baptist Medical Center.

After a short while, she was hired as a Nurse Navigator, a clinical coordinator for patient services. Dina works full-time while her hubby putters in the garden, creating an oasis of native plants, fruit trees, and herbs on their private corner lot. And in their spare time, they travel.

Dina is especially happy with her kitchen design. “I took all the best features from all of my other kitchens and put them into this one kitchen,” says Dina. “And I love how Brett used his talents to make everything practical, as well as beautiful.”

enough to seat six for a casual dinner when they don’t want to use the formal dining room. The cabinet facing the dining area beneath the counter is lighted, and crystal glasses sparkle softly. The zinc-top dining table is sensible, but sophisticated enough for any occasion.

Next to the dining area is a music/media room with a lovely piano.

This room also features one of the family’s fine Oriental rugs.

upholstered in a blue fabric that matched the rug. The mirror brings all the colors of the room together with its reflection. An antique china cupboard holds a collection of milk glass pieces from the early 1900’s, and polka dot pillows add a playful touch.

The three bedrooms reflect various styles. One is reminiscent of the south of France, Dina’s favorite place to visit, another is of sand, surf, and sky. The master bedroom is anchored with another antique rug, this one Dutch, and brilliant blues create a captivating, yet calming environment.

“It was fun to shoot before and after photos of the house,” says Carter, who chronicled each room as it was transformed. Both Brett and Dina delighted in watching the changes develop as they pulled all the objects and ideas into one living space. It was a perfect example of how, when decorator and client work hand-in-hand, magical things can happen to a home.

Bright pairs bring new life to your sofa.” If you are looking to add color to the room, Tennille suggests painting old furniture, and don’t forget your antiques.

“A fresh coat of wax and a drill brush will bring those pieces back to life.”

ast week, a friend invited me to her home, and, as my eyes perused the aqua walls surrounding her glass-paneled pantry doors, a familiar refrain echoed in my head: “I really wish I could remodel my house, but it just isn’t in my budget this year...”

The decorating professionals on Amelia Island want to share a little New Year’s secret with you – refreshing your home is definitely in the budget! So where do you start? “If you have an area of discord, fix that first,” explained Robyn Branch of InsideOUT Home and Garden, “The important thing is to pick an area and focus.” Most designers start with the living or family room because that is where the most time is spent, where guests are received, and, Benjie McEntyre of Julia Hall Interiors emphasizes, it is easily spruced up on a budget to great effect.

Wilson Tennille, owner of The Plantation Shop, suggests that you begin by pulling everything out of the room. From there, it’s easy to see your space, rearrange furniture, and, as Branch advocates, start to borrow from other places in the home. “As you arrange your room, be creative and change how the room flows,” offers Tennille. “Everything doesn’t have to center around the TV!”

Cal & Carol Ann Atwood

C

arol Ann and Cal Atwood first came to Amelia Island from their Atlanta home in 1989, and they made it their permanent home in 1997. Their first property was on the ocean, where Carol Ann enjoyed early morning walks on the beach and finding treasures the sea left behind. Later, they moved to a property closer to the Amelia River side of the island, where she could pursue her passion for gardening and caring for her collection of roses.

Her “man”, Cal Atwood, is first and foremost a Marine.

He is a World War II veteran and landed at Iwo Jima where he was wounded. He is active with the island Marine Corps League, especially the annual fundraising efforts for Toys for Tots. He has chaired the annual Toys for Tots golf tournament and, although he no longer plays, he is there to cheer on all the participants. Once an avid golfer, he claims four holes-in-one.

Cal had a distinguished career as an educator. At the University of North Carolina and Emory University, he influenced many with his own life experience and talent as a teacher. This sometimes gruff patriot is also a poet. Yes, a soldier poet. His experiences have fed his work, and those things that he cares deeply about ring true in his carefully crafted lines of poetry. His most recent book of poetry is titled Isle of You and is dedicated to his wife, Carol Ann. Raised on Lookout Mountain, Georgia, Carol Ann attended the University of Georgia. She is a University of Florida Master Gardener currently responsible for the roses in the demonstration garden at the government complex in Yulee. She is a former board member of Micah’s Place and chaired one of the organization’s annual Amelia Island Plantation Home Tours, which showcased island homes each spring.

The Amelia Island Museum of History has been a big part of the couples volunteering efforts since moving to the island. The museum, housed in the county’s old jail house, celebrates the amazing history of Amelia Island and its Eight Flags tradition. Both have served as president of the Board of Trustees. Cal has chaired and continues to be active in the popular Museum of History golf tournament held in February each year, and he also volunteers for the Veteran’s History Project. Carol Ann is a popular docent and volunteers each year for the Holiday Home Tour.

Married 28 years, the couple have a blended family of five children, 18 grandchildren, and one great-grandson.

The pair, highly visible, are constantly seen hard at work at those projects and for those organizations for which they care so very much.

Why did they choose Amelia Island? When asked, Carol Ann was quick to respond: “We have loved everywhere we have lived, but nowhere as much as Amelia Island, with its splendid beaches, live oaks, the historic town of Fernandina, pelicans everywhere, but, most of all, the wonderful friends we have made through the years. We are so grateful.”

The Marine Corps motto—Semper Fidelis or “Semper Fi”—translated from Latin means “always faithful”, an apt motto for Amelia Island’s dynamic couple, Cal and Carol Ann Atwood.

radiant roses All A Flutter Roses add year-round color and interest to your garden

s we begin a brand New Year, we always wonder what it has in store for us. I guess only God knows, but one thing I am certain of is that we have another year of gardening in front of us, either from your favorite chair or literally out in the dirt.

In last month’s issue of the Islander, I promised to give you more information on the “All A Flutter” shrub rose. This rose is in the Knock Out Rose family. It is a compact shrub that grows to three feet by three feet. A moderate-to-fast growing shrub, it can be planted in full sun and used as an accent plant, a hedge, used in mass plantings for a really awesome display, or potted in a container to enjoy on a patio or near a window.

This plant is disease and pest resistant.

The All A Flutter is an evergreen, full-blooming shrub, adorned with beautiful fuschia-pink semi-double blooms. These wonderful flowers appear in spring and re-bloom through the summer and into the fall. They are hardy to minus 20 degrees F, and they will make a wonderful new addition to your garden.

This shrub requires very little care.

They will send out more new shoots and give an abundance of flowers. Also, do not hesitate to cut back during the later months, as it will enhance their blooming.

When planting the roses, make sure to dig the hole three times the width of the pot, water well, backfill, and make sure the plant is one to two inches above the soil level, then water and add more soil if needed. And don’t forget to mulch the plants—roses like to be mulched!

I neglected to tell you that the Angyo Star Fatshedera I mentioned last month is an evergreen vine that grows in part sun to shade. It is hardy to zero degrees F. It has year-round interest because of its large

variegated foliage of rich green leaves with a wide cream border. This vine will grow five to six feet in height and four to five feet in width. It can be a moderate-to-fast grower, so choose your location carefully.

This plant simply requires regular watering. Plant it in slightly acidic, welldrained soil mix, then fertilize it in early spring and prune in spring to shape it to your liking.

As with all plants, water before planting, plant in part sun to shade in a hole three times the width of the pot, backfill, and plant one to two inches above the soil level. The Angyo Star is really eye-catching, and it will brighten any shady area. These plants are both Southern Living plants.

This time of the year is a great time to get a head start on cleaning your garden beds, getting rid of vines and weeds that are visible, and preparing for planting and mulching. And don’t throw out those wonderful Christmas plants!

Joe’s 2ND STREET BISTRO

ust six months ago, Chef Ricky Pigg and his wife, Mary, purchased Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro, and already they are fast friends with the Amelia Island community. Their close connection to Joe’s began when Ricky’s father, Ray Pigg, a local artist, created the painting that would eventually become the cover of Joe’s menu. A member of the Island Art Association, Ray was well-known and loved on Amelia Island until his passing not long ago. Ricky met Mary in Nashville, and the couple moved to Fernandina last summer to take over Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro, where Ricky’s father’s paintings still hang today.

I went to dinner at Joe’s recently with my friend Bruce, and we had a fine time talking with Ricky and Mary and enjoying a fabulous meal. Our server Christopher poured us a glass of Third Wife Sauvignon Blanc, a crisp white wine, while we enjoyed homemade potato foccacio bread served with pesto oil for dipping. That night Ricky suggested we try the Grilled Vegetable Salad with Bleu Cheese, and it was fantastic. The zucchini and yellow squash were slightly smoky, with soft bleu cheese on top

and a thirty year balsamic vinegar drizzled around the plate. Food for all the senses to enjoy! Then we sampled some of Joe’s famous Gumbo, made with prime beef, shrimp and Andouille sausage.

The gumbo was rich and a little bit spicy, served with saffron rice. We had Spinach, Orange, and Macadamia Nut Salad after that, served with a homemade honey Dijon dressing. This was especially nice after the gumbo, sort of a palate cleanser, and the macadamia nuts were an exotic treat.

Ricky wanted us to try some other appetizers, so we sampled Crab Cakes with Lemon Remoulade Sauce, and also Chicken and Andouille Wontons. The crab cakes were terrific, nearly all crab. And I especially liked the creativity of the wontons, which were served crispy hot, stuffed with roasted chicken, sausage, and a rich leek cream cheese, then drizzled with homemade barbecue sauce. A Napa cabbage slaw was the perfect compliment to the wontons.

Christopher brought us our entrees, Grilled BoneIn New York Strip Steak and a special that night, Fresh Snapper with Red Pepper Jelly. The steak was magnificent, served medium rare with three sauces.

There was a decadent roasted shallot and gorgonzola butter on top of the steak, plus an au jus sauce on the plate that paired well with the rustic mashed potatoes. The snapper was sautéed with a crispy coating and topped with a homemade red pepper jelly, a sweet surprise. This dish was served with parsnips and butternut squash, my favorite winter root vegetables, a rich brown butter sauce and a rosemary grits cake. The dish was extraordinary.

The grits at Joe’s are freshly ground when Ricky orders them, and you can really taste that in the grits cake and their Shrimp & Grits dish, another one of my favorites.

For dessert, Ricky had us sample Apple Bread Pudding, served hot with vanilla ice cream, plus a scrumptious Sweet Potato Cheesecake, and a slice of Key Lime Pie, almost chiffon-like, with a graham cracker and pecan crust. Joe’s creative staff is cooking up wonderful new dishes and familiar favorites every night of the week. After renovations in January, the restaurant will open for lunch as well as dinner. As always, Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro welcomes larger parties in their upstairs room and beautiful courtyard.

bicycling on Amelia Island

I

love to ride my bike around Amelia Island, and, in the last two years, it has become a lot easier to do so. With miles of new bike trails, better sidewalks, and safer bike lanes, my friends and I are pedaling now more than ever. Did you know that the number one question asked by tourists when they visit is, “Are there safe places to ride a bike around the island?”

Cycling is one of the most versatile sports that anyone can participate in, and it’s also great fun. I thought it would be enjoyable to try out some of the new trails that will now take you safely from the north end of Amelia Island to the very southern tip, and even beyond. Some people are under the misconception that there is one long, paved trail to take you through the island, but that is not true. The Amelia Island Bike Trail is a series of trails that connect together so that you can ride everywhere around the island safely. The thing I like about the island trails is they are diverse and distinctive everywhere you go, making your cycling experience fun and rewarding no matter where you cycle on the island.

I began my trip at Fort Clinch State Park, the most northern tip of Amelia Island. You can take the back trails if you have an off-road bike, and they are pretty challenging. I chose to take the easier route on the main road, which brought me from the Amelia River though the state park’s maritime hammock and estuarine tidal marsh. When I got to the entrance of the park, I crossed Atlantic Avenue and continued out behind the Atlantic Rec Center, where I entered Egan’s Creek Greenway.

The Greenway is one of my favorite parts of the trail. It is all off road, but easy to bike, and I always see a multitude of birds, turtles, and, occasionally, a raccoon or otter. It was a beautiful, sunny day as I traveled the trail across Jasmine Street, and onto the southern part of the Greenway, which now goes all the way to Sadler Road, behind the Residence Inn. I highly recommend picking up a map of the Greenway, as there are other side trails and you can get turned around a little if you’re not paying attention. But I managed to come out unscathed, and then turned left toward the beach, riding on the sidewalk for a short distance until I came to First Avenue, where I took a right.

First Avenue runs parallel to South Fletcher, a quiet neighborhood street with very little traffic and friendly people who greeted me good morning as I cycled through. When I reached Bill Melton Drive and the Fernandina Beach Golf Club, I rode up Bill Melton and through that neighborhood until I reached Buccaneer Trail. The sidewalk along Buccaneer Trail is very safe to ride on, set well back from the street, and a treat awaits cyclists along that part of the trail: the Ten Acres Kraft Athletic Club. A private organization, Ten Acres has a large sign at its gate that welcomes bicyclists to come into the club to rest by the river.

Ten Acres is a nice place to take a break, have a snack, drink some water, and enjoy the view of the river. If you ride down there at sunset, the view is especially picturesque. After my rest, I rode south until I came to A1A, which took me all the way to Amelia River State Park at the south end of the island. This part of the trail is where I noticed so much improvement – the bike lanes are wide and safe, and cyclists are easily seen by motorists.

What a pleasurable experience!

There is still some construction ongoing as I write this, but the trails will be completed by March 2013. If I were to continue over the Nassau Sound, I would have discovered even more trails through Big and Little Talbot Islands, and, if I was feeling really adventurous, I could ride to Mayport, taking the St. John’s River ferry, and continue all the way to Jacksonville, and even St. Augustine. Whew! I think I’ll save that for another day.
