Now in its 17th season, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival continues to delight and surprise concertgoers year after year, and this season’s program is no different.

This month, Amelia I sland once again pr epares for its annual musical extrav aganza known as the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival. Now in its seventeenth season, the festival continues to delight and surprise concer tgoers year after y ear, and this season ’s program is no different. Entitled “The Year of the Piano,” this year’s months-long program of concerts includes old favorites and—of course—a few wonderful surprises. We feel v ery fortunate to hav e enjoyed these many y ears of beautiful music fr om the acclaimed group of world-renowned musicians that have appeared here. General and Artistic Director Christopher Rex continues to keep each season fr esh with remarkably eclectic programming. Throughout the history of the festival, we have enjoyed the concerts at Amelia Park, the family concer ts at the Peck Center with our kids, and per formances by such world-renowned talents as Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Hilary Hahn, and a host of other world-renowned classical musicians. The AICMF is now a months-long concert series that begins this month and extends thr ough the busy season until the end of A pril. How far Amelia Island has come as a center for the best classical music since the festiv al was launched sixteen years ago! We listen to a lot music at our house, fr om pop and classic rock to jazz and classical, but nothing compares to hearing live musical performances. It is one of our favorite things to do, and w e try to bring the whole family whenev er possible. The masterpieces of the chamber music canon are so enjoyable because they w ere composed to be per formed in smaller, intimate settings, and Amelia I sland’s varied settings make for an incomparable listening experience. This year’s highlights include piano vir tuosos Yefim Bronfman and Chick Corea, the Miró Quartet, Gil Shaham, and The Grascals. We look forward with anticipation to this y ear’s offerings, and we extend our hear tfelt gratitude to Chris R ex, Executive Director Dr. Joe Marasco, President of the Executive Board Emma Bledsoe, and all the people who work tirelessly to make the festival a smashing success. In addition this month, w e preview the always ex citing Amelia I sland Restaurant Week, now in its tenth y ear of offering exciting culinary opportunities each y ear in January; we feature the Amelia Island-Fernandina Beach-Yulee Chamber of Commerce’s newly renovated office suite, which allows the Chamber to offer a host of new services; and we include a special section on this year’s wonderful Amelia Island Book Festival, returning in February. We also have an interesting “Backyard Adventure” on historic Bosque B ello Cemetery, where the long-lost gravesite of John Barr was recently rediscovered, and much, much more. eaturing five thrilling piano per formances, the 2018 season of the Amelia I sland Chamber Music Festival, themed “The Year of the Piano,” will be launched b y twin headliners; classical gr eat Yefim Bronfman and jazz legend Chick Cor ea. But the excitement will not stop with dazzling displays of keyboard virtuosity. The Festival presents a wide range of internationally recognized artists at 13 more performances through April, including the highly r egarded Dover Quartet, the Festival’s quartet-in-residence; violin vir tuoso Gil Shaham; Amelia Island’s favorite trio, cellist Andr es Diaz, pianist Wendy Chen, and violinist Chee-Yun; and the G rascals, a Grammy-nominated bluegrass band hailing from Nashville. “We’re very excited to celebrate ‘The Year of the Piano’ during our 17th year,” says Christopher R ex, General and Artistic Director of the Festival. “The piano is one of the pillars of chamber music, as w ell as su such an important instrument in many other ggenres. e We’re so fortunate to welcome Yefim B r Bronfman and Chick Cor ea as headliners. Piano virtuoso Yefim Bronfman opens the F estival with a program featuring works by Beethoven, Schumann, and SSchubert, including Schumann’s Humoreske in B-flat Major, Op. 20, a romantic piano piece composed in 1839. It contains w what is thought to be one of the most beautiful openings in all oof Schumann’s works. Internationally recognized as one of today’s most acclaimed aand admired pianists, B ronfman stands among a handful of aartists regularly sought by festivals, orchestras, conductors, and rrecital series. Widely praised for his solo, chamber, and orchestral rrecordings, Bronfman has been nominated for six G rammy A Awards. “I’ve known Bronfman for many years,” says Rex. “His sstrength, power, dignity, and incredible virtuosity is apparent in h his service to the music. He’s one of the greatest pianists in the w world.” Bronfman’s performance will be January 16 at 7:30 p.m. aat Amelia Plantation Chapel, 36 Bowman Road. The piano-themed F estival continues on J anuary 19 when the AICMF welcomes jazz legend pianist Chick Cor ea. The keyboardist, composer, and bandleader has teamed with artists like Lionel H ampton, Stefano Bollani, Bela Fleck, and Bobby McFerrin. His duo partnerships with Gary Burton and Herbie Hancock have endured for decades. Cor ea’s concert will feature in-the-moment improvisation, Corea classics, jazz standards, and classical renderings. “Corea is one of the greatest improvisational artists in the world, ” says R ex. “The winner of 22 G rammy Awards, he’s truly a musical phenomenon. ” Corea’s performance will be held at First Baptist Church, 1600 South 8th Street, at 7:30 p.m.

CHRISTIANIA PIANO QUARTET AND THE MIRÓ QUARTET

On February 2 at 7:30 p .m., the Christiania P iano Quartet presents a stunning performance of works by Mozart, Korngold, Beriot, and Schumann, including M ozart’s Piano Quartet No.1 in G Minor, K, considered the first major piece composed for piano quar tet in the chamber music r epertoire. The Christiania P iano Quartet features David Coucheron, violin, Julianne Lee, violin/viola, Christoper R ex, cello, and Julie Coucheran, piano. David Coucheron regularly performs in some of the most impressive venues, such as Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center, with orchestras such as the BBC P hilharmonic and Oslo Philharmonic. He holds degrees from The Curtis, Julliard, and Guildhall schools. His sister, Julie Coucheron, has established an international car eer and has worked with musicians such as Lazar Bergman, Elton John, and Claude Frank. Julianne Lee appears fr equently as a soloist, chamber musician, and or chestral player, recently joining the A tlanta Symphony Orchestra as their ne w principal second violinist. She has earned her degree in both violin and viola performance from The Curtis and the N ew England Conservatory. Christopher Rex is principal cellist of the A tlanta Symphony

Christiania’s concert is held on February 2 at 7:30 p .m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 2600 Atlantic Avenue. On February 9 at 7:30 p .m., the Miró Quartet presents a program of meticulously play ed pieces by Haydn, Boccherini, and Schumann, including Boccherini ’s Musica notturna delle strade di Madrid, a composition describing the bustling streets of night-time Madrid. The quartet will be joined by Chris Rex, cello. On February 15 at 7:30 p.m., violin virtuoso Gil Shaham will be joined by pianist Akira Eguchi for a dazzling program with works by Kreisler, Prokofiev, Franck, Bach, Saint-Saens, and Dornam, including Bach’s beloved Partita No. 3 in E major for solo violin B WV 1006 and Prokofiev’s Five Melodies, Op. 35. Shaham is one of the foremost violinists of our time; his flawless technique, combined with his inimitable warmth and generosity, has solidified his renown as an American master. The Grammy Award-winner is sought after thr oughout the world for concer to appearances with leading or chestras and conductors, and was named Musical America’s “Instrumentalist of the Year” in 2012. Akira Eguchi has captivated audiences and critics throughout the world as a piano soloist, chamber musician, harpsichor d player, and collaborativ e pianist. H e was the r ecipient of numerous honors during his time at Juilliard and was awarded a prize for excellence in accompanying at the Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition. Since his triumph as winner of the Chopin I nternational Piano Competition, Ohlsson has established himself worldwide as a musician of magisterial interpretive and technical pr owess. Ohlsson is known for his masterly performances of the works of Chopin, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schuber t, and his v ast repertoire, many of which hav e been commissioned for him. “O hlsson was already a legend when w e were at Julliard together,” says Rex. “He’s one of my very favorite pianists.”

Joining the Festival again this y ear is the D over Quartet, the AICMF’s Quartet-in-Residence, for three events: a Master Class on March 17, and two concerts on March 18 and April 8. The Dover Quartet features Joel Link, violin, Bryan Lee, violin, Milena Pajaro-van de S tadt, viola, and Camden S haw, cello. Hailed as “the next Guarneri Quartet,” the Dover Quartet draws from the lineage of that distinguished ensemble, as w ell that of the Cleveland and Vermeer Quartets. Its members studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. The Dover Quartet first formed at C urtis, and its name pays tribute to “D over Beach” by fellow Curtis alumnus Samuel Barber. “The Dover Quartet is a permanent part of our Festival family,” says Rex. “Everyone loves them, and we hope to increase their residency at the Festival to include an expanded educational presence, in addition to their performances.” The Dover Quartet’s master class on M arch 17 will be held at 11 a.m. in the M emorial United Methodist Church sanctuary, a free concert sponsored by donors Scott and J udy McCue. Young string play ers from the U niversity of N orth Florida, Jacksonville University, Douglas Anderson School for the Ar ts, and the J acksonville Youth Symphony will be mentored by members of the Quartet. On March 18 at 5 p.m., Dover will be performing works by Mozart, Borodin, and Mendelssohn featuring Mozart’s Quartet in D minor, K. 421, the second string quar tet in the series of six that Mozart ultimately dedicated to H aydn. “The audience will likely be familiar with the wor k of Borodin, as his music was featured in the popular Broadway show, Kismet,” says Rex. “Baubles, Bangles, and Beads, and This is My Beloved are both from Borodin’s work.” Dover’s second concert will be held on April 8 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church at 7:30 p.m., featuring the works of Couperin, Schoenberg, and Zemlinsky.

P erforming at Walkers Landing at 7:30 p .m., these two curr ent-day jazz greats bring back the P arisian 1930s, alternating moments of dazzling interplay with melancholy and sheer exhilaration, as r ecorded on their new Duets album. And in a fun concert for the whole family, The Hotlanta Dixieland Jazz group will perform a free concert at the Amelia Park concert pavilion on April 14 at 11 a.m., sponsored by Rayonier Advanced Materials Foundation. Attendees should bring their own chairs or blankets. For great musicians to make great music, they must form a bond, and for the Grascals, that bond has been forged through personal friendships. This year’s Newdome Fellowship Artists, which featur e students from leading conservatories, will be the Cezanne String Quartet made up of Eleanor Dunbar, violin, Lauren Densinger, violin, Steven Juarez, viola, and E lizabeth White, cello. They will have two performances: one on April 22 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church at 7:30 p.m. where they will be joined by one of Amelia’s favorite pianists, Wendy Chen; the second is a fr ee concert on April 26 at Savannah Grand at 1 p.m., also sponsored by the Rayonier Advanced Materials Foundation. The Fellowship Artists are named after B eth Newdome, a beloved performer at the Amelia I sland Chamber M usic Festival, who play ed a cr ucial role in helping to get the Festival started. “Beth was a consummate ar tist whose upbeat personality and talent made her sought-after performer and teacher,” says Rex. Newdome fought cancer for over five years and died in February 2010. Virtuoso pianist Sam Haywood offers a stunning performance along with Chris Rex on April 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Amelia Baptist Church featuring wor ks by Beethoven, Schumann, Schuber t, Stanford, and Mendelssohn. Haywood was a finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition at the age of 13. As a chamber musician, his par tners have included Joshua Bell and Steven Isserlis, with whom he is featured on the Musical Gifts album. Mr. Haywood is also a composer and ar tistic director of London’s Solent Music Festival. Amelia Island’s favorite trio r eturns to the F estival this year—Chee-Yun, violin, Andres Diaz, cello, and Wendy Chen, piano—performing works by Menotti, Ravel, and Mendelssohn. For Mendelssohn’s piece, String Octet, the trio will be joined by the Cezanne Q uartet and former N ewdome artist Julia Brandenburg, violin, and Nina Bledsoe, viola. Their concert will be held on April 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Amelia Plantation Chapel.

NEW SURGERY CENTER OPENS AT BAPTIST NASSAU

Nassau County residents now have access to a ne w state-of-the-art Surgery and Procedural Center at Baptist Medical Center Nassau. The 30,000-square-foot center, which opened r ecently with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, is the latest addition to B aptist Nassau’s growing medical campus and pr ovides residents with the most adv anced medical equipment in an ultramodern facility . The hospital inv ested $22.5 million to build the ne w center. Among the center’s many featur es are four “smart” operating suites with ceiling-mounted equipment that can be controlled at the medical team ’s fingertips, 20 large private patient r ooms, two endoscopy suites, a suite for minor pr ocedures, and a high-tech sterilization center for surgical instruments. Special attention was giv en to the aesthetics of the ne w center as w ell. In the waiting r oom, a 56-foot mural spans the length of the wall. P ainted by Fernandina Beach artist William Maurer, it depicts the natural environment of the entire county that Baptist Nassau serves and helps pr omote a sense of calm for patients and families. “Every aspect of the Surgery and Procedural Center is designed to provide a better experience for patients, family members, and physicians, ” said Hospital President Ed Hubel. “Safety and comfort were the driving factors at every stage of design.”

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Nassau County present their 11th annual Benefit Gala this year on February 17 at 6 p.m. at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. A gourmet dinner will be served from the renowned kitchens of the resort after guests have enjoyed a cocktail reception and silent auction. The numerous auction categories range from celebrity memorabilia and cruises to visits at luxury hotels and local adventures. isa Chaffman likes to talk about creativity at her studio, Ar tsyMe, located at 212 S.8th Street, Suite B. She believes that creativity is the first building block in becoming a visual ar tist. One must be unafraid of the outcome of one’s creativity, focusing on textur e, color, depth, perspective, and dimensions, and not the end result. Born in A tlanta, Georgia, Lisa Chaffman was inspired at an early age by a carefree, artistic lifestyle. Her mother was an interior decorator, while her father was a free spirit who encouraged others to explore the imaginative world. It was no surprise that Lisa would combine her parents’ talents and imagination, taking her rightful place in the world of art. Lisa integrates all of her experiences into a unique interpretation of art. Using Amelia Island and its wildlife as her base, she takes the ordinary and translates the natural world into colorful renditions in all mediums, including oils, encaustics, acrylic, watercolor, pencil, and alcohol inks, to create mixed media pieces that are original and unique. Chaffman believes that one of the reasons why children paint so fr eely and

boldly is because they have not developed a preconceived idea of what is acceptable. That is also one of the reasons why “paint and sip” classes ar e so popular, because they allow participants to let loose and show their inner voice without judgment. “In my classes at Ar tsyMe, I will teach you how to unleash your creativity in a fun and relaxed way; the techniques you need will come later,” says Chaffman. “I offer a series of three classes, each one focusing on dev eloping creativity and built on the foundation of the pr evious class. We learn about color, perspective, placement, depth, textur e, and loads of other tools for y ou to use, all while having fun! Students may bring wine if desired. Art and creativity is therapy, much like a massage, a pedicur e, or a soak in the hot tub.” Lisa also offers a home decorating service called “R edoing-Spaces Interior Design,” located in her studio, where she helps clients r edesign their homes using what they have, and adding special touches that reflect their individual tastes and personalities. elebrating ten y ears this month, Amelia Island’s annual R estaurant Week remains one of the most anticipated events on the island. The tenday culinary showcase features a selection of Amelia I sland’s award-winning and popular dining establishments for lunch and dinner, with different restaurants participating in each. F rom January 19 to 28, sav ory prix-fixe menus will be available for lunch and dinner at participating restaurants. Lunch menus are just $12 and offer an entrée, side dish, and non-alcoholic beverage. Dinner menus ar e either $21, $31, or $41 per person, which includes three courses and a bev erage. “Restaurant Week has become one of

our most anticipated annual ev ents, and it is the per fect time for hungr y visitors and locals to tr y some of the island’s new culinary hotspots and enjoy their old fav orites,” says G il Langley, president and CEO of the Amelia Island Convention and Visitors Bureau. “This year we celebrate the tenth anniv ersary of Amelia I sland’s Restaurant Week, which will include a ne w dinner price point of $41, several new tours, cooking classes, and other delicious events we’ve added to the menu.” To kick off Restaurant Week, The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia I sland will whet appetites with a “ Tribute to Coastal Treasures,” a very special opening dinner on January 17 celebrating fr esh, coastal

n November 16, 2017, the Amelia Island-Fernandina Beach-Yulee Chamber of Commer ce reopened its doors with a completely r enovated business facility. Boasting a gr oundbreaking business center model called BRIC (Business Resource Innovation Center), the Chamber office has become an even more valuable resource for local businesses. Located at 961687 G ateway Blvd., this is not the Chamber office you remember from a y ear ago. “BRIC is a professional, co-work (shared workspace) setting where you can wor k, form networks, meet with clients, shar e ideas, host meetings, and interact with likeminded professionals,” says Chamber President Regina Duncan. “It is a place where you can connect and collaborate. It took us three years to get to this point, and we’re thrilled to offer this space to members of the business community.” The Chamber v acated their office for construction in May 2017, and the

project was finished in O ctober. “Our ribbon cutting and grand opening was held on Nov 16,” says Duncan. “Beside the cash donations, we had over $78,000 of in-kind ser vices donated for this project. It truly was a community and member business-driven project!” BRIC includes shar ed open workspaces with lounge-style tables and seating, in addition to priv ate offices. It provides access to str ong and secur e WiFi and many other amenities, such as the use of the confer ence room and AV equipment. Designers, contributors, and board members thought of ev ery detail, including stand-up desks, office pods, scanning, faxing, and printing capabilities, flat screen TVs, plus coffee, lemon water, and snacks. Their services are compatible with all electr onic devices, including laptops, tablets, and phones, both Apple and Android. “We also hav e five talented and knowledgeable staff members who help our members learn how to use the

equipment and make their businesses more productive and successful, ” says Duncan. “For non-members and people visiting from out-of-town, we offer these same services for a small stipend.” With almost 700 members representing thousands of area employees, the Chamber speaks with a strong voice for local businesses. Volunteers and staff people monitor government meetings and pending legislation to keep members informed on issues that affect them. he AIBF is home to the awardwinning Authors in Schools Literacy Program. With the annual support of sponsors, members, donors and fundraising events, the AIBF helps bring noted authors to every school in Nassau County and books for each student of the author they meet. This February, the Festival will purchase and gift more than 11,000 students with a book of the noted author they meet, in turn inspiring young people to achieve their goals. Among the student presenters are: International and NYT bestselling author David Baldacci, who will address high schools students in the county in two presentations during Authors in Schools day. Jennifer Armentrout, NYT bestselling YA author will speak to at several of the middle and high schools and NYT bestselling children’s author Sherri Rinker, who will address elementary school students. he old year has departed, leaving us with a fresh start and a garden full of new hopes, good health, happiness, and peace. Come take a walk with me down an aisle at the trade show. I am so excited to see some really interesting colors on my right. I t has been ten years since a ne w Knock O ut Rose has been intr oduced. The standards for a Knock Out Rose are so high that it’s rare that a potential intr oduction is even considered. With these thr ee stunning new additions, I’m sure you’ll find a place in y our landscape for one or more. The White Knock O ut Rose is a single rose. It is an excellent shrub rose, which stands out in the landscape due to the contrast betw een its pur e white blooms and v ery dark green foliage. I t will bloom from spring through fall and it maintains a compact habit of thr eeand-a-half feet wide by the same height. The golden yellow centers in these white roses really pop! Clustered next to the White Knock Out is a dazzling new color addition, the Coral Knock Out. Its unique coral color

is even stronger in hot humid climates. The flower opens up with brick orange color and finishes a light coral salmon. This bush grows to four-and-a-half feet tall b y the same width, with beautiful double flower heads. Another new Knock O ut, Peachy, is peach in color , achieved with the combination of pink petals with y ellow centers. The color is much more intense with the cooler temperatur es in the spring and fall. This compact bush grows 3 feet in height and 3 to 4 feet in width. All the Knock Outs love full sun. Make sure you scout out these beauties and add them to y our garden. They’re

great in mass plantings, specimens, or in a large pot with some cascading greenery around the bottom. Let’s amble through this garden to the next aisle at the trade sho w, where something red is catching my ey e. It is a Mimulus, meaning “comic actor,” the Burst Berry Monkey flower shrub, a small, well-branched mounding shr ub that grows 18 to 24 inches tall and wide. The foliage is a dar k glossy gr een with numerous large, dark red funnel-shaped flowers that have two lips. The bottom lip is split once and the top lip split twice, resulting in five frilly petal lobes that have a light orange/ yellow throat. These flowers bloom year round in coastal gar dens and gr ow in full sun to light shade. What a nice little border plant! By the way, there are two more of these wonder ful new shrubs; Burst Lemon and Burst Orange, which I will tell you about later. Three aisles o ver, I see something outstanding. n 2004, John and Joan Lohr began searching for a r etirement home along the Southeast coast, where family members had r etired from South Carolina to F lorida. During family visits, John and Joan took many a side trip to find the perfect location in which retire. After visiting Amelia I sland in 2004, they settled on a marsh front lot in Marsh Lakes. “ We had just tour ed St. Marys,” says John, “then we came to Fernandina Beach, where after fifteen

minutes in to wn, we decided it would be a great place to live.” The Lohrs, who had built six ne w residences during their many mo ves for John’s career, began planning their home. They spent three years looking at hundreds of plans in books, magazines, and online, learning a gr eat deal about what features and materials would wor k best in this area. Joan’s parents’ home – a low country-style home outside Beaufort, South Carolina – ser ved as inspiration

for their 3,500-foot threestory house, which takes full advantage of the extensiv e marsh views. The Lohrs inter viewed several architects, but after meeting with Jose Miranda, they immediately kne w he was their choice. The three worked closely with builder Steve Bernhard of Bernhard Construction over an eighteen-month period to cr eate a beautiful and comfor table low country home with stunning vie ws and custom-designed amenities. “We designed the house with the elevated floor plan and extensive decks so that w e could take adv antage of the marsh views and the breezes,” says John.

The Lohrs kne w they wanted expansive, lightfilled rooms, which would take advantage of the fifteen-mile view down the Intracoastal Waterway to Black Hammock Island. The panoramic vie w from the first-floor living room and breakfast room is breathtaking. The rooms open to a deck acr oss the back of the house, a per fect setting for an afternoon cocktail. “We love the marsh,” says Joan. “It is always changing – the tides, the colors, the wildlife.” A spacious master suite, great room, breakfast room, kitchen, formal dining room, and small den ar e also on the first floor.

The twenty-four-hundred square foot four-car garage, or, as John calls it, an “island basement,” provides space for household and lawn equipment, and as well as a “ dry” room equipped with dehumidifiers for storing luggage, Christmas decorations, and other items. Two inviting guest rooms— the “King Room” and the “Queen Room”—with ensuite baths and private marsh view decks are on the second floor. John and Joan have long been scuba divers, and they have an extensive collection of “treasures” from all over the world, which are beautifully displayed in an armoir e with a lighted display cabinet in the living room. The cabinet has glass front doors

and sides, glass shelv es, and a mirr ored back. The made-for-relaxation living room has a woodburning fireplace and two comfortable leather sofas, which offer great views of the marsh. “We brought these sofas with us fr om Colorado,” says J oan, “and had Rowland’s recover them.” The sofas face a woodburning fireplace surrounded by custom-built cabinets and lighted display shelv es. Books, photos, and mementos ar e artfully displayed, as is a model of a gaff-rigged schooner, which Joan gave John for his bir thday shortly after the couple moved in.

The large gourmet kitchen is designed for enter taining. “As you can imagine,” says Joan, “with those guestrooms, we have a constant parade of family members and houseguests to entertain.” Both John and Joan love to cook, and the ample preparation space and five-burner gas range make a per fect working space for the two chefs. A collection of J oan’s handthrown pottery graces the tops of the custom cabinets. It is however, the “Butler’s Pantry” where guests gather, as it contains the wet bar, wine cooler, and ice maker, along with Joan’s beautiful display of glasswar e. The most striking piece

in the pantry is the “copper fish” bar sink, a find from Home Depot’s Expo Design Center. “We had no friends or family locally when we moved here,” notes John, “but that did not matter.” It took only a short time for the Lohrs to make friends in the neighborhood and on the island. John and Joan are members of the Amelia Island Sailing Club and the Newcomers Club, and they are active in both, as well as other groups. They love water sports and keep a power boat at Amelia Island Yacht Basin, but their favorite thing of all is to enjoy their beautiful home with family and friends.

Sliders SEASIDE GRILL With banquet space for 250 guests, Sliders is a long-time local favorite known for its great food and fun atmosphere, perfect for lunch, dinner, or an unforgettable wedding. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

here are few restaurants in Fernandina Beach that hav e been around as long as Sliders, an Amelia Island destination for more than 30 y ears. Today Sliders is a tr opical-themed restaurant with an outside Tiki bar, live music every night of the week, daily happy hour specials, and Monday night “Paint & Sip” art classes in the banquet space upstairs. Sliders has something for ev eryone. On a recent Monday evening, I met my sister, Martha, for dinner downstairs before venturing up the elevator for a colorful evening with local artist Lamar Miles. Perched on the ocean side of S adler Road and A1A, S liders is the per fect place to take in the essence of Amelia I sland. I like to go in the evenings to enjoy the live music, especially when they bring the F irewater Tent Revival to to wn from Atlantic Beach, which they do once a month. Tonight I wanted to get a better idea for what they do outside of the standard restaurant parameters. It isn’t uncommon for S liders to ser ve over a thousand people on a busy w eekend during the peak season. D uring that time, they may be serving guests upstairs in their banquet facility which seats 250 people or at the nearb y Ocean Club of Amelia, which they also operate. M artha and I started the evening with a C rab Cake and an order of their Tuna Nachos. The crab cake was filled with delicious crab meat and ser ved with a horseradish remoulade and a lemon brulee. I really enjoyed the smoky-sweet flavor of the lemon and squeezed it all o ver my crab cake. The nachos were not nachos at all, but something better: triangle-shaped wonton wrappers, deep-fried, seasoned, and topped with a wasabi cream cheese sauce, teriyaki glaze, toasted sesame seeds, wakame seaweed salad, and, of course, the always delicious ahi. These flavors elevated the dish sky-high compared to the typical neon yellow nacho cheese concoction. Our entrée came from their banquet menu, a delicious Surf & Turf featuring Parmesan-Crusted Seabass and Filet Mignon. The seabass was perfectly prepared, the crust crispy, and dressed with a lemon beurr e blanc. The filet was grilled to per fection

and dressed with a mushr oom bordelaise. The rich red wine and earthy mushrooms drifted into the lemon butter to cr eate a remarkable plate. What may have delighted me most were the potatoes. Roasted simply with salt and pepper , olive oil, and rosemary, they were perfectly seasoned. So often the starch and vegetables are overlooked, but on this plate they truly shined. Monday nights at S liders are a blast. After w e had a slice of what has to be the best key lime pie I’ ve had in ages, w e went upstairs to find a raucous affair already in full swing. The

Monday evening art events typically draw ar ound 30 people, but for some r eason, when flamingos are involved—like tonight—attendance more than doubles. The room was set up in two lines of tables co vered with paper and paint trays. The air was electric with people of ev ery stripe slinging paint and enjoying a drink. ort Clinch historian F rank Ofeldt has been sear ching for the grave of John Barr for at least 20 years. Elected mayor of Fernandina in 1888, Barr was the former Ordnance Sergeant at Fort Clinch from 1879 to 1887. He was a well-respected member of the community and St. Michael Catholic Church. He was also a member of the American Legion of Honor. He and his wife, Margaret, had 13 children together, and they lived in Fernandina until their deaths in the early 1900s.They were buried in Bosque Bello Cemetery, with six of their children, but the location of the graves was lost. Ofeldt recently invited me to join him in Bosque Bello with exciting news. “The grave of John Barr has been found!” he ex claimed. “I’ve been walking this cemeter y for years, looking for his family plot. It’s really quite a find.” Olfedt and I met on Rosebud Road, in the older part of the cemetery, and he showed me the wrought iron fence displaying the Barr family name, with seven gravesites that had been covered by palms and earth. He showed me the larger gravesite thought to contain the remains of Barr and his wife, and the smaller grav es that likely belong to six of his children. Each headstone and memorial at Bosque B ello has cultural and historic significance. But many of the early grav e markers were carved from wood, and they either r otted or disappear ed.

Cedars, oaks, and palms have overgrown some of the older graves, as with John Barr’s plot. Last summer, City of Fernandina Beach Parks & Recreation Director Nan Voit was conducting research in the cemetery and spotted the words “Barr Family” on a wroughtiron fence. “This was a complete surprise, as the fence surr ounds the Lomm family plot, ” says Voit. “We discovered that Matilda Lomm, who is buried there, is John Barr’s daughter. Using a probe, we found seven graves. We assume these are the graves of John and Margaret Barr, with six of their children.” John Barr’s military service was extensive. During his military career, he was stationed in S an Francisco, Washington Territory, Alaska, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Ofeldt intends to apply for a military marker for Barr through the Veterans Administration “It’s a lengthy pr ocess,” says Ofeldt. “I’ve applied to the N ational Personnel Record Center for his military records, and those will be sent to the V.A. When we receive the headstone, we plan to have a special service for Barr at the cemetery.” A walk through Bosque Bello is a trip thr ough Fernandina history, including 19th-centur y Spanish residents, victims of yellow and typhoid fever epidemics, veterans of many wars, and answers to long-lost mysteries! The cemetery is located at 1321 North 14th Street.
