In its first season 17 y ears ago, the Amelia I sland Chamber Music Festival came into being with a compact two-w eek schedule in early J une, and it was a fabulous for tnight. Concerts were staged at one of Amelia Island’s singular venues almost every night, but if you had already left for the summer or happened to be away in June, you missed the entire event. As many will r emember, the reason for the June schedule was that a ne w festival like ours couldn’t compete for world-class talent in the middle of the winter symphony season because performers had alr eady made commitments, and nobody kne w what to expect on Amelia Island. How much has changed in the past fe w years. As an illustration of ho w the AICMF has become one of the nation ’s foremost chamber music festiv als, the festival schedule now includes a full slate of concerts running from January to May. Again this year, festival organizers are offering another star-studded series of concerts, beginning with jazz and classical trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, leader of the J azz at Lincoln Center O rchestra. Also appearing on Amelia Island during this extraordinary season are violinist Joshua Bell, pianist Emanuel Ax, the Miro Quartet, and Amelia Island favorites like the Dover Quartet and Anne Akiko Meyers. Be sure to catch one of these world-renowned performers in concert this year at one of Amelia Island’s intimate venues. Once again, we offer our congratulations to General and Artistic Director Christopher Rex, the inspiration of the AICMF, who has guided the festival to its current heights. He continues to attract the finest talent in the world of classical music to Amelia Island, while putting together a chamber music season of invigorating programming that always delights and surprises. We also want to acknowledge AICMF Executive Director Dr. Joe Marasco, who has been so important in establishing the schedule as a premier event and building the community support that makes the festival possible. We are grateful to the local businesses, generous donors, and tireless volunteers who make each season such a resounding success. In addition this month, we take a look at some recent successes at White Oak Conservation in raising endanger ed species like whooping cranes and cheetahs to help reverse their dwindling populations; enjo y another “F ernandina Faces” from Dickie Anderson on Linda Wendt, a lifelong lo ver of dogs who is a dedicated volunteer with Nassau Humane Society and Soft Touch Pet Therapy; feature another interesting “Eyes in the Skies” installment on Great Horned Owls during their Amelia Island nesting season; share a “Backyard Adventure” on “paddling into the past ” at an ar chaeological site on Talbot Islands State Parks; and much, much more. See you around the island!

ntering its eighteenth season in 2019, the Amelia I sland Chamber Music Festival has become one the world ’s foremost chamber music ev ents. Since 2001, the festiv al has wowed audiences with chamber music concerts of classical and alternative genres, and this y ear’s events are packed with star power. “Presenting the Jazz at Lincoln Center O rchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Bell, and Emanuel Ax in a single season clearly reflects our status as one of the nation’s premier festivals,” says Dr. Joseph Marasco, AICMF’s Executive Director. “The addition of such internationally r ecognized stars, with Amelia audience favorites like the D over Quartet and Anne Akiko Meyers, will make 2019 our greatest season yet!” Amelia Island’s beautiful churches and the Historic Nassau County Courthouse provide charming, intimate settings for the majority of the festiv al’s concerts, enabling attendees to
sit near the concer t stage. The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia I sland and the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort provide larger venues. The array of internationally acclaimed artists who have headlined the festival in recent years includes Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman, Joshua Bell, Chick Corea, Bela Fleck, and Chris Thile. “Clearly, we have enjoyed a glorious past, and our future is even more exciting,” says Marasco. “And in so doing, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival has woven itself into the cultural fabric of northeastern Florida and the surrounding region.” The force behind the success of the festiv al is Christopher Rex, Artistic Director and recently retired principal cellist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. He joined the or chestra in 1979, the same year in which he became the first cellist ever to win the string prize in the biennial Young Artists Competition

called “Czechmates,” cleverly named b y Rex. The concert features two extraordinary pieces by Czech composers Dvorak and Smetana. Christiania’s artists include J ulie Coucheron, piano, her brother David Coucheron, violin, Julianne Lee, 2nd violin, and Rex, cello. “The group decided to name themselves the “Chistiania Quartet since David and Julie are from Norway, and ‘Christiania’ was the name of the capital befor e it was changed to Oslo. It was the perfect title for our piano quar tet since ‘Chris’ was part of the name,” laughs Rex. The program includes Dvorak’s Piano Quartet No. 2, Op. 87, and Smetana’s Piano Trio in G Minor, Op. 15, a moving and powerful work that was written in memory of the composer’s daughter. David Coucheron is concer tmaster of the A tlanta Symphony Orchestra. He has performed as a soloist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, and Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and performed solo recitals at Carnegie Hall, London’s Wigmore Hall and the K ennedy Center. Julianne Lee is principal second violinist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Prior to joining the ASO in 2017, she served as assistant principal second violin of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Julie Coucheron has won first prizes at competitions in Italy, Germany and the U.S. S he has worked with Lazar Berman, Claude Frank, Emanuel Ax, and Vladimir Feltsman and toured internationally.

ulie and M ark Delfs, both local artists, were looking for a larger studio where they could be mor e creative and accommodate more students. They didn’t set out to cr eate a village—it basically created itself! When they saw the space at 2188 S adler Road, they pondered the idea of opening an ar t gallery, in addition to a studio. Last July, the couple signed a lease on the former Rowesville Cottages next to Amelia ’s Attic Furniture, rebranding the property “Artisan Village” based on the small village feel of the cottages in the space. In September, they opened their galler y, which includes the wor k of 12 r esident artists: Renee Martin, Erma Brutscher, Kendyl Porter, Lisa Chaffman, Andrea Lee, Deni Karpowich, Donna Whiddon, Charli Leniston, Lynne Pilkerton, Jamie Palmer, Nico Ramos, and Walter Bridges. Julie is w ell-known around the island for her use of r esin-epoxy and acrylic mixtures to create ocean-inspired artwork, including her popular jellyfish series. She also teaches beginner classes in resin-epoxy pouring thr ee times a week. Mark is not only a painter but also a cartoonist, whose work has been
published in the N ews-Leader. He works full-time as a fr eelance graphic designer and dir ector of mar keting for Artisan Village and the F ernandina Beach Shrimp Festival. Artisan Village also hosts community events and musical per formances, fostering a unique, cr eative atmosphere for resident artisans and visitors. The artists display a mixt of ar t forms, including acrylic paintings, je welry, resin-epoxy creations, encaustic wor ks, handmade furniture, photography, sculpture, pottery, accessories and gifts, oils, abstract ar twork, mixed media, shadow boxes, plus traditional and fine art. Artisan Village offers studio space, art classes in many disciplines, and a monthly Village Art Show where artists can display their work. January’s show is entitled “The Nude Year.” They also participate in the second S aturday Artrageous Artwalk. Artisan Village is open Tuesday – Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p .m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p .m.. We’ve embraced them back.” Dave—who works from his home office in Yulee—is a loan officer for the J acksonville branch of C ross Country Mortgage, a national company. “Our mission,” Dave explains, “is to provide clients with the best possible advice and benefit for their financial needs while facilitating a straightfor ward, stress-free mortgage process for buyers, sellers, and realtors.” Cross Country Mortgage handles all types of r esidential mortgages, whether ne w construction or existing r esidences. “We are very flexible,” says Dave. “If regulations allow it, we can do it.” Dave specializes in working with Nassau County clients, often meeting with them at the Nassau County Chamber of Commerce conference room or at Starbucks. “I came from the logistics and supply chain business, where I worked 24/7,” says Dave. “I travelled for work, and I was just not at home with my family enough.” Since moving to Yulee, Dave and his wife, K elly, have become active with their children’s schools and extracurricular activities. All three of their childr en are soccer play ers. Dave also is an activ e member of the N assau County Chamber of Commerce. lizabeth Pointe Lodge looks as if it had been built 150 years ago for a seafaring captain from New England. In fact, the charming inn was built b y David and Susan Caples in 1992 and operated by them until 2014, when they sold it to Jim and Gay Dunlop, who previously owned the Hamilton Turner Inn in Savannah. The Dunlops and their son, Brandon, purchased Elizabeth Pointe when Jim and Gay moved to Amelia Island. Jim and Gay are now retired from both Elizabeth Pointe and Amelia Island Vacations, and Brandon and his wife, Tarah, run the businesses. The inn is cozy and warm, with a coastal ambience, and the guest r ooms are charming and comfor table. The inn, located on the ocean near Main Beach, has a spectacular porch overlooking the beach that is perfect for morning coffee or an afternoon cocktail. The Pointe Restaurant offers dining on the broad wraparound porch, and it is open to the public every day for breakfast and lunch. A special S unday Brunch is offered one Sunday each month. Guests may order picnic lunches for outings on the island. Brandon, who wor ked in risk management for HSBC Bank, says it was natural that he and Tarah would transition to the hospitality business, giv en his family backgr ound. He and Tarah love owning the inn and managing 40 pr operties for Amelia I sland Vacations Property Management Service. The couple is active in the community, and Tarah serves on the board of the Amelia Island Museum of History.

n 2018, ex citing things w ere happening at White Oak Conservation on the S t. Marys River in Yulee. Two endangered whooping cranes, which w ere hatched and raised by their parents at White Oak, were reintroduced into the wild in August. In November, four cheetah cubs fathered by Wookie were born to Oransay, a female cheetah. White Oak, a wildlife conser vation center o wned by philanthropists Mark and Kimbra Walter, saves endangered species and leads global conservation efforts through education and collaboration. White Oak’s seventeen thousand riverfront acres in northwest Nassau County sustain conservation efforts for a diverse group of endangered species. The young whooping cranes gr ew as big as their par ents and were taught to fly by their father, “Grasshopper,” and their mother, “Hemlock.” Only 700 to 800 whooping cranes remain in North America, and the hatch of the cranes at White Oak was a milestone for the species. The White Oak crane habitat covers more than an acre and offers two ponds, natural food items, and pr otection from predators. White Oak worked with the Whooping Crane Eastern P artnership and the I nternational Crane Foundation to breed the adults, who are part of the eastern
migratory population. Decades of dedicated research and captive husbandry by the I nternational Crane Foundation and its partners have rescued the whooping crane fr om the brink of extinction. In August, the adult cranes and the two y oungsters were flown by private jet to H oricon National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Wisconsin. The private flight was donated b y Wind Way Capital Corporation, which has been donating flights to the International Crane Foundation since the early 1980s. Cheetahs are also a threatened species, with only seven thousand estimated to liv e in the wild in Africa and I ran. “We are proud these four cubs born here in November bring us closer to saving this species fr om extinction,” says Walter. Noting that exceptional planning and care are needed to ensure the cheetah’s survival, Walter went on to say that “days like this —when the four cheetahs were born—make us hopeful for the future.” White Oak first brought cheetahs to the pr eserve in 1985. Since then, one hundred and eighty sev en cubs in fifty two litters have been born. Cheetahs are the fastest land animals on the planet, and they can run up to 60 to 70 miles per hour . Female cheetahs separate themselves and liv e solitary lives, while males stay

together in gr oups called coalitions. Brandon Speeg, White Oak’s Director of Conservation, explained that White Oak conservation efforts follow an animal ’s natural biological patterns, which means the cheetah cubs will stay with their mom for about a y ear, until “ we see behaviors that tell us they ’re ready to move to another one of our habitats, or possibly to another facility .” Speeg says that the brothers will stay together, while sisters in the same litter will most likely live separately. An internal Cheetah Confer ence was held at White Oak in O ctober 2018. Experts from around the world shared information and strategies on preserving the species, which sadly has disappeared from many ar eas of Africa and Asia. White Oak Conservation Chief Executive Officer Steve Shurter pointed out the timeliness of the bir th of the four cubs, which occurr ed just as international exper ts were gathering at White Oak to strategize on how to improve the long-term outlook for cheetahs worldwide. White Oak Conservation works to help inspir e others to suppor t conservation by hosting education, conservation, corporate and gamily groups for visits, o vernight stays, conferences, and meetings. White Oak offers in-depth tours led b y wildlife experts that will bring y ou face-to-face with some of the 32 species that call White Oak home, including rhino, giraffe, okapi, and cheetah. Linda Wendt BY DICKIE ANDERSON PHOTO BY STEVE LEIMBERG, UNSEENIMAGES.COM
D
ogs and pets have always been an important part of Linda Wendt’s life. She grew up in Lexington, M assachusetts, where her par ents raised E nglish Springer Spaniels. One special dog in her life when she was y oung was Rusty. Linda committed to obedience training with Rusty, and at age 16, she entered Rusty in an AKC dog show. He won Best of Breed. Of course, it helped that he was the only English Springer Spaniel in the show! When she married her husband, B ill, the couple made Bill’s long-haired dachshund the maid of honor. Linda and her husband were living in S outh Carolina when they decided to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. They decided to move to St. Croix, where they lived for 14 years. St. Croix is the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and, as Linda shared, it is a wonderful place to live. The two accumulated a number of rescued pets while living in St. Croix. These fortunate pets included Annie, a puppy Linda rescued in a rain storm, and Misha, the dog Bill took to a vet after she was hit by a truck. Other additions to their furry family included three kittens rescued from a drainpipe. When it became necessar y to move back to the U.S. for health reasons, the Wendts were delighted to find another island where they could make their home. The couple were struck by the beauty of Amelia I sland and the similarity of its beautiful marshes to the marshes around Cape Ann, Massachusetts, an area they had liv ed in—and loved—for many y ears. The menagerie accompanied them to their new home. After her husband passed away, Linda got in involved with the Nassau Humane Society. She began by volunteering at the “old” shelter, and that is wher e she found her no w constant companion, Onie. Linda is par t of a dedicated cadr e of dog walkers who exercise shelter dogs several times a week. She also enjoys taking dogs to various off-site adoption events. She and
Onie are regulars at first Saturday visits to the Farmer’s Market. “I love my inv olvement with N assau Humane Society,” she shares. “Besides the animals, of course, I think the staff members are fantastic. They are amazing caretakers and protectors of the animals in their care.” Linda also participates in Soft Touch Pet Therapy, a program that coordinates visits to v arious healthcare facilities on the island. She and a group of volunteers meet each week, and along with their dogs, visit the r esidents and patients at Quality Health of F ernandina Beach. With their visits, the volunteers are able to bring some furr y love and comfor t to people in need of a little cheer . The volunteers find that the visits offer a welcome change of pace for both the patients and the staff. In addition, Onie, in her spar e time, has become a mascot for an island y outh group, and the pair ar e hoping to find other opportunities to interact with local youngsters. Some of Onie and Linda’s favorite places to visit ar e the Greenway, Amelia Island State Park, and the Talbot Islands. “What I enjoy most of all is just being with dogs, ” says Linda with a smile on her face. “So my life has truly ‘gone to the dogs,’ I suppose!”

Great Horned Owl With their nesting season in January, Great Horned Owls can be heard calling loudly to their mates on and around Amelia Island. STORY AND PHOTOS BY GAIL E. PFOH
A
h, January on Amelia Island! Chilly evenings of crisp air and starry nights. Perhaps one night when you’re sipping hot chocolate or walking y our four-legged family member, you might hear , “hoo-HOO-hoo-hoo”. Then you hear it again. It’s the classic call of the beautiful Great Horned Owl (nicknamed the “Hoot Owl”). These large raptors liv e and nest her e on Amelia Island and our surr ounding eco-system. Their range is widespread; you may see one anywher e from Florida to Alaska. In our area, January is their nesting season. Pairs of adult owls are hooting to call to each other as they select a nest site and raise owlets. And they will do this not only in secluded areas like Fort Clinch State Park, but near r etail stores, with cars and people bustling belo w them, or even right in your neighborhood. Owls do not build nests. I nstead, they use the nests of other birds, squirrels, or cavities in trees. They line their nests with leaves, or even the soft do wn they pluck fr om their chest. You may remember the Great Horned Owls that nested in an osprey nest on the north end of the island. It was the perfect “time share!” After the owls fledge their owlets, the osprey use the nest for their nesting season. Last winter, a pair of Great Horned Owls actually nested in an osprey nest on a channel marker just south of us. continued on next page. 49 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • JANUARY 2019

Great Horned Owls nest once a year. The male and female take turns incubating their eggs for approximately 32 days. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology tells us that “mated pairs are monogamous and defend their territories with vigor ous hooting, especially in the winter before egg-laying and in the fall when their young leave the area. Owlets fledge at about 9 weeks of age, but remain near their nest for weeks thereafter. Young owls are the same siz e as their parents when they leave the nest. Slightly larger than a R ed-Tailed Hawk, with a wing span of appr oximately 50 inches, they are Florida’s largest owl. They are well-known for the feathered tufts on the top of the head called plumicorns, which may look like horns or cat-shaped ears, but are not ears at all. They are feathers. U nlike Bald Eagles and Red-Shouldered Hawks, these owls have feathers on their legs and feet. Great Horned Owls have beautiful grey-brown feathers with a reddish face, white throat, and large yellow eyes. Even their eyelids have beautiful mottledcolored feathers. S amantha Little of Audubon’s Center for Birds of Prey tells us that “ unlike humans, o wl eyes are fixed and do not mo ve, but they can rotate their head 270 degrees left or right from a for ward-facing position. Their ears are located on the side of the head and are covered by feathers. The feathers that surround their face form a sor t of disc, which brings sounds into the ears like radar. Their hearing is so keen that they often hear pr ey before seeing it. They are approximately 21 tall and the female is always larger than her mate. One Great Horned Owl alone can eat hundreds of rodents a year, which is a good reason to have owls as neighbors. This fall, you might consider installing a nest box to attract a pair of o wls to nest on your property. You can find plans to build your own nest bo x by going to www.nestwatch.org. Keep your “eyes to the skies above our Amelia Island ecosystem. Listen for the “hoo-HOO-hoo-hoo. Perhaps you will be fortunate and see some of Amelia Island’s Great Horned owls!

in the garden Linebacker™ distylium
dynamic distyliums In this season of “armchair gardening,” consider two hardy evergreen plants, Linebacker and Vintage Jade, for your landscape, as well as a new gardenia called Sweet Star. BY BETTY MORRELL
A
very Happy, Healthy and Safe New Year to y ou all! Each N ew Year brings new friends, ne w places to go, new things to see, and new ideas. It also brings new gardening ideas and plans for the landscape, gardens, trees, and lawns. Fancy that! I know this is the “ armchair gardening” time of the y ear, so let me put some new ideas into y our plans that I found at the trade sho w. Just imagine a new beautiful green lush lawn that takes half the mowing time with complete weed control. Now that is what I call awesome. Scotts calls it ProVista, a new St Augustine variety based on the pr oven genetics of Floratam and dev eloped by Scotts Miracle-Gro with 20 y ears of research and dev elopment behind it. Scotts ProVista has a deep gr een color, thrives in full sun, and exhibits improved performance in moderate shade. Thanks to its dense, horiz ontal habit, ex cellent uniformity and w eed-free capability, ProVista makes it possible to cut y our mowing in half. In the last issue, I told y ou about a collection of ne w plants that intrigued

me. The Distylium is a tough ev ergreen plant that is taking the place of plants plagued with problems, such as the Boxwood, Cherry Laurel, Hollies, and Indian Hawthorn. I wr ote about “Cinnamon Girl” and “S wing Low.” Two other D istyliums also caught my eye at the trade show, both with PP. The “Linebacker” is an upright evergreen that matures into an excellent screening or hedge plant. R eddish new growth matures to lustr ous dark green. The foliage does not thin out in the center of this plant. It has no disease or pests to trouble it. The “Linebacker” grows 8 to 10 feet in height and 6 to 8 feet in width. Grows in full sun to part shade. It is highmoisture-tolerant, drought-tolerant, and deer-resistant, if you are lucky enough to site one of those on your property.
53 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • JANUARY 2019
If you prefer a lo w-growing, spreading mound in your landscape, the “Vintage Jade” is perfectly suited, as its layered branches form an intermediate spreading mound, making it per fect for covering large ar eas. The lustrous dark green foliage looks good all season long. “Vintage Jade” grows 3 to 4 feet in height and 4 to 5 feet in width. Will grow in full sun to part shade. And don’t miss this ne w gardenia— my very favorite plant—called “S weet Star.” This plant blooms into late summer and early fall, is co vered in single flowers starting as early as May. Excellent rebloom throughout the summer, the flowers are followed by pretty orange fruit. The plants are nicely r ounded, with glossy gr een leaves and stay very compact in habit. “Sweet Star” grows 3 to 5 ft high and spreads 4 to 5 ft. Can be gr own in full sun to part shade and is ev ergreen. Oh my again, can y ou smell that heav enly fragrance that is wafting in the br eeze? I have to have this one, maybe you too? If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

It was surprising because they had r eally put all of the extras in this house— keypad-controlled lights, fully wir ed for sound thr oughout,

Four Seasons Bistro With lots of favorites on the menu, a welcoming ambience, and outstanding cuisine, this family-run restaurant just over Shave Bridge is definitely worth a visit. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
O
n a r ecent Wednesday evening, I had dinner with my mother at Four Seasons Bistro. The weather outside was as rough as the traffic on A1A, but warm smiles and comfortable environs awaited within. Michael and Stephanie Walden have created a family-owned oasis in Yulee, a beacon of light in a long stretch of big box stores and chain restaurants. The kitchen at Four Seasons is an open design, and from the front door we saw smartly dressed chefs and service staff moving
gracefully about preparing meals with the car e and precision you might expect fr om a w ell-run family establishment. We were seated and introduced to our server right away, and fresh baked ciabatta rolls were delivered with house-made pesto. As we looked at the menu, some long-time local friends came in behind us and let us kno w that this is one of their fav orite places to dine. While we caught up, we ordered the Caprese Salad and White Bean, Sausage, and Kale S oup, two of my all-time favorites. Despite the season, the Florida grown tomatoes were vibrant and fr esh. The fresh mozzarella, basil, and balsamic reduction were light and r efreshing, in star k contrast to the
warm and hear ty soup, which combined cr eamy cannellini beans and piquant I talian sausage in a delicious br oth with fresh kale. The rich flavors of both dishes w ere complimented by a cabernet sauvignon from Francis Ford Coppola. A salad course came out befor e our entr ees. A Caesar salad was tossed in a v elvety homemade dressing with a perfect balance of ancho vy and garlic. The house salad was served with fresh vegetables and a fantastic peach vinaigrette that was equal parts sweet and tart and awesome. The dinner special this night was a marinated Greek Chicken with orzo pasta, olives, and feta. The dish looked amazing coming out of the kitchen, but mom was thinking about the steak and I was really looking for ward to the P asta Rustica. The filet mignon came perched on a foundation of roasted garlic mashed potatoes with sliced vegetables and draped with a marsala sauce and por tobello mushrooms. To compliment the filet, a 2015 I l Bruciato Italian blend was poured. The Pasta Rustica consists of grilled chicken and shrimp tossed with penne pasta, spinach, and mushrooms in a r osemary garlic sauce topped with mozzarella cheese and br oiled until bubbly. The rosemary is subtle but transformativ e with the roasted garlic, and both danced on my tongue when combined with a 2016 Meiomi chardonnay. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and the chicken juicy, but the sauce was really the star of the dish. Paired with the chardonnay, the creamy sauce and pasta were set alight on my palate. We finished our dinner with a beautiful cr ème brulee and shots of Lambr usco. We were full fr om dinner, but couldn’t resist the cool, cr eamy crème brulee with its warm, cr unchy caramel. In talking to M ichael, he pointed out some of the early bird specials available throughout the week, which got me thinking about the lasagna I’d seen on the menu, and I kne w I’d be back soon. Four Seasons Bistro is open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner. It is located at the intersection of SR 200 and O’Neil Scott Road near Lowe’s.

B
ig and Little Talbot Islands are two of my fav orite places, so imagine my excitement when my husband, Troy, and I were invited to join the Friends of Talbot Islands State Parks for a kayak trip hosted by Kayak Amelia! The event also featured a presentation by Dr. Keith Ashley, who reported on results from archaeological field work completed on Big Talbot Island. The Field School, conducted by the Archaeology Lab at University of North Florida and held o ver six w eeks in M ay and June 2017, included Dr. Ashley and 25 students. Troy and I arriv ed late afternoon and w ere greeted by Ray and J ody Hetchka, owners of Kayak Amelia, who had graciously donated their kayaks to par ticipants of the ev ent. Using a map and a bit of maneuvering, Troy and I spent about an hour paddling in the salt marsh, bor dered by pristine pine islands, swamp, and hammock communities. These places are the sites of many shor eline finds, dating from circa 300-1450 A.D. aboriginal encampments up thr ough a late eighteenthcentury colonial plantation. After our paddle, w e were treated to a r eception of hors d’oeuvres and beverages, where we were able to meet and mingle with the F riends of Talbot Islands folks, who pr ovide financial support to the parks for projects critical to maintaining a healthy park ecosystem. Some of the pr ojects conducted by the Friends include a sea tur tle program, interpretive panels, park staff development, and park equipment, along with the archaeological field studies by Dr. Ashley and his students. After the reception, guests were invited to take a seat in Kayak Amelia’s multi-purpose building, where Dr. Ashley gave a presentation on his findings from Big Talbot Island. Artifacts
presented included pottery, midden, shell tools, glass, brick, and ceramics. A portion of the students’ field work focused on learning more about a kno wn St. Johns II period (A.D. 900-1250) Timucuan site at the southeast end of the island. R ecovered artifacts from that site include potter y, lithics, bone, and shell tools. Plentiful small fish remains (mullet and sea tr out) indicated that the nativ es used fine-mesh nets and/or baskets to capture young fish in the cr eeks, in addition to har vesting oysters and clams. D r. Ashley pointed out that this site is potentially significant and wor thy of listing on the N ational Register of Historic Places. Unfortunately, these sites ar e actively eroding, from the bluffs right down to the beach on N assau Sound and Atlantic Ocean. Over the past sev eral decades, they hav e sustained extensive damage due to tidal and storm erosion, which has been exacerbated by Hurricanes Matthew in 2016 and Irma in 2017. Much work still needs to be done to discover more about the daily lives of the people who called this island home. Troy and I loved the way this ev ent combined learning and leisur e, with an afternoon paddle follo wed by a presentation on the unique history and archaeology of Big Talbot Island State Park. It was a wonderful experience, and we’re hoping to join D r. Ashley in May and June this year as he conducts another Field School with his students. Volunteers are always welcome, and of course, if you want to become a member of Friends of Talbot Islands State Parks, your donation will help them fund future projects. Kayak Amelia is located at 13030 H eckscher Drive. For more information, visit kayakamelia.com or talbotislands.com.
