Now in its 19th season, the festival, firmly established as one of the premier chamber music festivals in the country, continues to wow concertgoers year after year.
Amelia
This month, Amelia Island once again gets ready its annual musical extravaganza known as the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival. Now in its nineteenth season, the festival, firmly established as one of the premier chamber music festivals in the country, continues to wow concertgoers year after year. Similar to a recent season dubbed “The Year of the Piano,” this year’s months-long program of concerts includes some of the finest string virtuosos of their generation, with violinists Anne-Sophie Mutter and Itzhak Perlman, and cellist Lynn Harrell. We are very grateful to have enjoyed so many years of outstanding music from the acclaimed world-renowned musicians who have appeared on the island. General and Artistic Director Christopher Rex continues to attract a star-studded line-up each year, as well as featuring plenty of fresh and eclectic concerts on the program. Throughout the history of the festival, we have been treated to events at Amelia Park, family concerts with our kids, and performances by such world-renowned talents as Yo-Yo Ma, Hilary Hahn, Wynton Marsalis, and a host of other extraordinary classical musicians. The AICMF is now a months-long concert series that begins in January and lasts through the spring season until the end of April. How far Amelia Island has come as a center for the best classical music since the festival was launched eighteen years ago! Nothing compares to hearing live musical performances, and we try to bring the kids whenever possible. The masterpieces of the chamber music canon are so enjoyable because they were composed to be performed in smaller, intimate settings, and Amelia Island’s varied settings make for an incomparable listening experience. This year’s highlights include violin virtuosos Anne-Sophie Mutter and Itzhak Perlman, cellist Lynn Harrell, the Dover Quartet, pianist Pinchas Zuckerman, and country and bluegrass great Ricky Skaggs. We look forward with anticipation to this year’s offerings, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Chris Rex, Executive Director Dr. Joe Marasco, and all the people who work tirelessly to make the festival such a success. In addition this month, we preview the always fun Amelia Island Restaurant Week, now in its twelfth year of offering exciting culinary opportunities each year in January; feature the Amelia Island Quilt Guild’s colorful show, which comes to the island every three years; present another “Fernandina Faces” from Dickie Anderson on Pam Veiser, a photographer of Amelia’s natural beauty whose 2nd Story Gallery & Studios features local artists and her own work; a “Backyard Adventure” with Karen Miller on hiking the backcountry and historic sites on nearby Cumberland Island; and much, much more. Best wishes for a very Happy New Year from our family to yours! See you around the island!

he Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival is celebrating nearly two decades bringing world-renowned artists to stages to Amelia Island. In its 19th year, this season promises to be the best yet! General and Artistic Director Christopher Rex has gathered together some of the world’s most honored musical virtuosos for another outstanding season of chamber music in all genres. “Anne-Sophie Mutter, universally heralded as one of the greatest violin virtuosos of the modern era, will make one of her few North American appearances at our inaugural concert in January,” says Rex. “She will be followed by such international luminaries as bluegrass and country music legend Ricky Skaggs, superstar violinist Itzhak Perlman, the Dover Quartet, our acclaimed quartet-in-residence, piano virtuoso Valentina Lisitsa, cellist Lynn Harrell, and Pinchas Zuckerman, who reigns as one of today’s most soughtafter violinists, chamber musicians, and conductors.” The array of internationally acclaimed artists who have headlined the festival in recent years has included YoYo Ma, Joshua Bell, Emanuel Ax, Chick Corea, Bela Fleck, and Chris Thile. “Clearly, we have enjoyed a glorious past and our future is even more exciting,” says Dr. Joseph Marasco, AICMF’s Executive Director. “And in so doing, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival has woven itself into the cultural fabric of northeastern Florida and the surrounding region.” Rex has been the force behind the success of AICMF, whose vision won the hearts of a group of Fernandina Beach women who loved chamber music. With Rex’s vision and enthusiastic support from the downtown Centre’d Women and others in the community, the first season was launched in 2001 with a budget of only $50,000, raised by a group of generous donors and corporate sponsorship from CBC National Bank. More recently, grants from the Rayonier Advanced Materials Foundation,

VIOLINIST ANNE-SOPHIE MUTTER AT FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH

On January 24 at 7:30 p.m., Anne-Sophie Mutter graces the stage of the AICMF’s inaugural concert at First Baptist Church. Ms. Mutter is on the greatest violinists of modern times. For more than 40 years, the four-time Grammy Award winner has been a fixture as a soloist in all of the world’s most important concert halls. Born in then-West Germany in 1963, Ms. Mutter made her professional debut at age 13 with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then she has thrilled audiences throughout Europe, Asia, and North and South America. “We are truly honored to have artists of such international stature as Anne-Sophie Mutter and pianist Lambert Orkis to perform an all-Beethoven program in honor of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth,” says Rex. “They will present Beethoven Sonatas for Violin and Piano Nos. 4, 5, and 9.” Beethoven, being primarily a pianist, wrote intricate, challenging parts for the piano, matching the virtuosity of the violin, and these sonatas are truly a dialogue between the two instruments. This performance is one not to be missed. Anne-Sophie Mutter
FAMILY CONCERT WITH JULIE COUCHERON AND ELIZABETH PRIDGEN On February 1 at 1 p.m., Amelia Islanders of all ages are in for a treat when pianists Julie Coucheron and Elizabeth Pridgen perform a four-hand piano version of “The Carnival of the Animals” by Camille Saint-Saëns. This musical carnival for children of all ages was developed in association with AICMF’s Young Patron program, in collaboration with the Amelia Island Dance Festival under the direction of Susan Dodge. The performance will be held at Fernandina Beach Life Center at Nassau County Council on Aging, along with dancers from the Amelia Island Dance Festival. “This family concert combining the whimsical and playful music of Saint Saens with the imaginative choreography of talented dancers can be a wonderful introduction to classical music for young people,” says Rex. Julie Coucheron is an award-winning pianist who tours internationally. Elizabeth Pridgen is a distinguished soloist and 12 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, Community Foundation of Northeast Florida, and the National Endowment for the Arts have helped. Generous contributions from CBC National Bank (now First Federal Bank) and Florida Public Utilities, along with contributions from several local businesses, continue to support the festival. “Individual contributions and ticket sales account for the majority of our funding,” says Rex. “But truly, we are a volunteer-driven festival. The support of this community and our volunteers have propelled the festival’s success.”

The Dover Quartet will also perform at the Amelia Baptist Church on April 17th at 7:30pm. “I’m really looking forward to the Dover Quartet’s second program.” says Rex. “I am nicknaming it ‘Dover Lite’ because in the second half they will delve into the popular music of Duke Ellington and the hit television series, ‘Twin Peaks.’” In addition, they will be mentoring promising young musicians from the Jacksonville 14 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

On February 23 at 5 p.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, the Christiania Piano Trio presents a program of music by Brahms and Dvorak., including the first of Brahms famous piano trios, Piano Trio in B Major. This piece had a special significance for Brahms, as it began his public career and it preoccupied his attention again at the end of an astonishing series of masterpieces. In its final form, the B major piano trio bears the hand, the mind, and the heart of both the young and the elder Brahms. The Christiania Piano Trio consists of David Coucheron, violin, his sister Julie Coucheron, piano, and Christopher Rex, cello. Cellist Christopher Rex, in addition to being Artist Director for AICMF, retired from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in 2018 after serving as principal cellist for 39 years. He became the first cellist ever to win the string prize in the biennial Young Artists Competition of the National Federation of Music Clubs, and since then has appeared as recitalist and chamber musician across the nation, including the New York Philharmonic, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall. Pianist Julie Coucheron has established an international career, winning major awards on Italy, Germany, the U.K. and the U.S. She has worked with Emanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Ma, and Elton John, and has toured around the globe. If you’re a Bach-lover, there’s a special concert just for you! He is one of the greatest violinists of all time.” Two free concerts held the weekend of March 27 and 28 welcome families to experience jazz and big band music at its best with the Kelly/Scott Quintet at the Boys & Girls Club on March 27 at 3 p.m., and the University of North Florida Big Band Ensemble on March 28 at 11 a.m. Three days later, Valentina Lisitsa returns to the festival in a concert at Amelia Plantation Chapel at 7:30 p.m., presenting works by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. PINCHAS ZUCKERMAN AT THE RITZ-CARLTON, AMELIA ISLAND The Festival wraps up on April 26 at 5 p.m. at the RitzCarlton, Amelia Island with the Zuckerman Trio performing works by Beethoven, Arensky, and Brahms. With a celebrated career spanning five decades, Pinchas Zuckerman reigns as one of today’s most sought-after and versatile musicians as a violin and viola soloist, conductor, and chamber musician. Zukerman, along with cellist Amanda Forsyth and pianist Angela Cheng, began offering a trio repertoire in 2011, and became the Zukerman Trio two years later. “A thrilling performance by the incredible Zukerman Trio will be a wonderful way to celebrate this fantastic 19th season of the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival,” says Rex. Education programs are the core of the AICMF’s mission in promoting chamber music to people of all generations. Music Education, the Beth Newdome Fellowship, Master Classes, a Spring Institute, and Strings Education are just a few of the ways the festival gives back to the community. “Our goal in bringing music education to concert attendees, students, and aspiring young musicians has been an important part of our Festival since 2001,” says Rex. “There are so many more exciting projects coming that embrace the music and the spirit of the people who love and support the AICMF. KEEP NASSAU BEAUTIFUL ANNOUNCES ADOPT-ATREE PROJECT Keep Nassau Beautiful is a local nonprofit working to inspire, educate, and equip individuals, groups, businesses, and governments to take action to make Nassau County a place where residents, visitors, and wildlife can thrive and experience the beauty of our county. Their latest project, Adopt-A-Tree, will plant up to 300 trees in the community. “Trees are essential to reversing climate change, maintaining wildlife habitat, retaining property values, and providing aesthetic beauty,” said Kelley McCarter, Keep Nassau Beautiful board secretary and project chair. “That is why Keep Nassau Beautiful is introducing Adopt-A-Tree as the first project of its newest program, Planting Nassau’s Future.” The project is in response to the loss of trees in Nassau County due to development, weather events, and age. From now to April, Keep Nassau Beautiful volunteers, partner organizations, and community residents will plant the trees which may be adopted by individuals, businesses, and organizations, and will be planted on private and public property as approved for the tree species. Educational support for the project is provided by University of Florida’s Nassau County Cooperative Extension Service, and funding is through dedicated grants, fundraising activities, and private donations. For information or to donate, please visit www.keepnassaubeautiful.org or call (904) 261-0165.

BAPTIST MEDICAL CENTER NASSAU RECEIVES PATIENT SAFETY AWARD Amelia Island’s Baptist Medical Center Nassau received an “A” for patient safety, the highest grade possible, in the fall 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades. The designations recognize Baptist Nassau’s efforts in protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care. “Nothing is more important than our patients’ safety. This is the fourth consecutive time that Baptist Nassau has received an A patient safety grade,” said Hospital President Ed Hubel, FACHE. “Our team members make safety their top priority – constantly monitoring safety measures and making improvements where they are needed.” Also, on the roster for the A-grade is Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville and Baptist Medical Center Beaches. The Leapfrog Group aims to improve healthcare quality and safety for consumers and purchasers and assigns an A, B, C, D, or F score to hospitals based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections, and other harms among patients in their care. “Our No. 1 priority is providing the highest quality of care for our patients,” said David Rice, MD, senior vice president and chief quality officer of Baptist Health. “Our physicians and team members follow strict safety and quality protocols throughout each patient’s journey to ensure a culture of safety every day.”
RIVERSIDE HOMES INTRODUCES NEW HOME DESIGN FOR CRANE ISLAND Crane Island Real Estate is pleased to announce that the community’s first Park Collection home is coming this summer! The home is one of 21 greenspace-adjacent homesites in the collection and will sit on the corner of Alice Park, Crane Island’s central gathering space. Named to pay homage to the legendary islander, Sarah Alice Broadbent, the greenspace will serve as a place for the community to join together for neighborhood events, to walk their dogs, host picnics, and more. Acclaimed local homebuilder Riverside Homes have partnered with residential design and new urbanist planning firm Moser Design Group of Beaufort, South Carolina to build the 3,964-square-foot residence, which echoes historic Fernandina Beach architecture. The show home will be available for purchase through Crane Island Real Estate, and its floor plan will also be available via Southern Living’s Inspired Communities collection. “Design matters at Crane Island, and this initial Park home will set the tone for our shared vision of the community at Alice Park,” said Jack Healan, Jr., president and developer of Crane Island. To learn more, contact Crane Island Real Estate at (904) 432-8390 or visit the Sales & Design Cottage at 3163 Bailey Road or www.craneisland.com.

oraine King, Amelia Island’s wellknown house portrait artist, presently has a display of her traditional works at the newly expanded Baptist Medical Center Nassau. Though Loraine’s one constant in her career has been her house portraits, her display of thirty of her pieces at Baptist move from realism to impressionism and abstract in watercolor, acrylic, pastel, pen and ink, and oils. They represent the other side of Loraine’s talent, in which she embraces the nature and essence of the communities where she has lived. The works on display at Baptist Nassau range from roseate spoonbills to ocean renderings, landscapes, florals, and more. Loraine’s interest in art began growing up in a family with art-related careers. She was an art education major, moving on to teaching, and then becoming art director of the Shenendahowa School District in Clifton Park, New York. She became an advocate for the arts in her community, directing art shows of her students’ works as well as those in the community. She was also recognized by the Schenectady Museum and in many art publications, including Early America Magazine.
While living in New York, her American Primitive paintings sold through the Folk Art Museum, as well as many shops throughout the area. She was also instrumental in starting the Dublin Art League in Ohio. Upon moving to Amelia Island with her husband, Tom, she started the Plantation Artists’ Guild & Gallery with the support of the Cooper family. Loraine not only represents the homes she is rendering, but includes family pets, cars, and even the family members. Why a house portrait? “Perhaps you have just purchased your first home or have finally completed your dream home,” says Loraine. “Maybe it’s your family home or grandparents’ home that brings a flood of memories. I work from photographs, capturing the heart and soul of your life or those you care for and love. It makes a wonderful personal gift.” Loraine’s work can be found at her home studio and gallery by appointment, at Baptist Nassau, Amelia Island Real Estate, Scotch Cove Gallery, and on her website at loraineking.com. For more information, call (904) 491-3737.

Riverside Homes
att Roberts and Chris Wood and their team at Northeast Florida homebuilder Riverside Homes have set high goals. With decades of experience, Roberts and Wood have built custom homes on the beaches of Northeast Florida and in exclusive neighborhoods throughout the area. Roberts and Wood feel that their team at Riverside Homes has a high-level understanding of what homebuyers are looking for – stunning, high-quality, and efficient homes built for each customer as if it were their own. “Because building a home is such an emotional and financial investment, we stay by the homeowner’s side throughout each step of the construction process,” says Wood. “We are a trusted partnership with a dedicated group of professionals, and our homeowners will attest to that.” Riverside Homes offers in-house professional interior design services and hosts a “breaking ground” meeting to review construction plans with the homebuilder. Once the home is finished, a “home orientation” is provided for the owner to understand the features of the home. The natural beauty and peaceful ambience of Amelia Island provide a natural fit for Riverside Homes. The company is currently building in Amelia Park, Amelia National, Crane Island, Oyster Bay Harbor, and The Surf. Riverside Homes built the 2019 Southern Living Idea House – a 5,540 square-foot, five-bedroom quintessential lowcountry beauty nestled among the centuries-old oaks of Crane Island. What can 3D mammograms do for your peace of mind?
New breast imaging technique makes breast cancer easier to see and reduces false positives. 3D mammography (digital breast tomosynthesis) is approved by the FDA and is quickly becoming the standard of care for breast cancer screening. Because it’s a newer technology, 3D screening mammography is not available at all screening facilities – but it’s available at Baptist Medical Center Nassau. 3D screening mammography is different from a 2D mammogram: • 3D mammography makes it easier to see the layers of breast tissue, allowing for better cancer detection. • 2D mammograms take one picture across the entire breast, in two directions: top to bottom and side to side. Unclear or suspicious findings from 2D views can increase the need for additional imaging and also lead to more false positives.
3D mammography is designed to overcome these limitations. 3D imaging technology moves in an arc around the breast to take X-ray pictures from many angles in seconds. A computer quickly assembles the pictures to produce clear, highly focused 3D images. This allows the radiologist to view the entire breast, layer by layer, for a more accurate screening — especially important for anyone with dense breast tissue or patients with an increased risk of breast cancer. Ask your doctor to recommend a facility that offers 3D mammograms. Or simply contact Baptist Nassau, now offering easy-to-schedule appointments for 3D screening mammograms.

art story with a
Returning in February this year, the Amelia Island Quilt Guild show shares their members’ remarkable artwork and supports the Guild’s extensive work in our community. BY JULIE SIMMONS • PHOTO COURTESY OF AMELIA ISLAND QUILTERS GUILD
H
ave you ever looked at a beautiful quilt and wondered what motivated someone to take a piece of fabric, cut it up, and then sew it back together to create a work of art? Or maybe when you see a quilt, you are flooded with memories of cuddling under a blanket like that on your great grandmother’s sofa. Or perhaps you visited Community Hospice Center this year and saw a delicate handmade quilt bringing peace to someone in need. Whatever you think about when you see a beautiful quilt, you might be interested to learn about the Amelia Island Quilt Guild and the work it is doing to keep this art alive on Amelia Island. “We no longer accept the notion that our grandmothers made quilts for utilitarian reasons,” smiles Lauree Hemke, a member of the Quilt Guild’s board of directors. “We look at quilts and recognize the artwork and think of the stories that go along with the colors.”
Started in 1989 with just 30 members, the non-profit organization was established to promote quilting and educate the public about the art of quilting. Today, the group is over 100 members strong, with their focus centered on the work they do for our community, including a two-day quilt show coming next month. “The show will feature over 200 quilts fashioned by guild members that reflect the history of quilt making,” says Rozlyn Warren, co-chair of the event. “Many members make quilts using traditional patterns, while others choose vintage or modern fabrics. Some gravitate to modern quilts, with its trend towards open space and bold colors, and others will display their talents through fiber arts, combining quilting with techniques such as embroidery, bead work, and applique.” continued on next page

The entries will be judged by Lauren Kingsland, a nationally certified judge with work exhibited in galleries and shows throughout the country. She is dedicated to quilt-making as a medium for storytelling, for building community, and for healing and wellness. The show also includes a Quilt and Fiber Art Boutique featuring quilts, wall hangings, gifts, and wearable arts items for sale. The event will also have a silent auction, raffle baskets, and door prizes. At the show, you’ll see some quilting patterns that you will recognize, and you’ll see lots of creativity, too. No matter the piece, the members of the Guild encourage you to ask, ‘What story is the quilt trying to tell?’ Perhaps as interesting as seeing the works of art is the opportunity the show offers for guests of all ages to meet with the quilt artists, hear their stories, see their techniques and tools of the trade, and to learn a new hand-sewing technique or show off their own skills by joining the show’s community quilt-in! As inspiring as the art of quilting is, the work the Guild does for other local non-profits is equally inspiring. “During 2019, we created over 300 quilts for each patient at our Community Hospice Center, shares Lauree. “Our charity quilter makes use of donated and purchased fabrics to create a quilt to bring comfort to the patient and their families. Other organizations, such as the Council on Aging, Habitat for Humanity, and Nassau Animal Shelter, also receive quilts or other sewn items. The Guild’s newest outreach is making surgical caps for children and youth at Wolfson’s Clinic. All proceeds from the show fund these community service and educational projects. The Amelia Island Quilt Guild show runs on February 21 and 22, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the Atlantic Recreation Center, 2500 Atlantic Avenue. Admission to the show is $10, with free parking. For more information about the Amelia Island Quilt Guild, visit www.aiquilters.com or their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ quiltsbytheseaamelia.

Pam Vieser BY DICKIE ANDERSON PHOTO BY STEVE LEIMBERG, UNSEENIMAGES.COM
P
am Vieser, owner of 2nd Story Gallery & Studios in downtown Fernandina Beach, is a talented photographer and artist as well as the gallery owner. Originally from Connecticut, she moved to Amelia Island seven years ago from Columbia, Maryland. Chasing sunshine in her retirement, she found the perfect home in which to explore her creative side. After a career as a financial executive and business consultant, she was ready to spread her wings. She credits her grandfather, Sherman Murphy, an artist who worked in oil, watercolor, and charcoal, for being the genetic connection that led to her artistic side. An environmental science major with lots of electives in art history, she finally had time to pursue her passion for photography after she moved to the island. Pam used her business experience to open her gallery and studio space, while at the same time creating a place to display her own art. Open for three years, the gallery displays a variety of paintings, photography, and jewelry. The gallery has two artists in residence—Ned Flemming and Lisa Chaffman. Pam opened the 2nd Story Gallery & Studios to highlight local artists, both young and old, and to share her photographs of the area’s natural beauty. Her photography is presented on acrylic, designer acrylic, glass, canvas, wood, and framed prints, and in many different sizes. Her smaller pieces include wood mini-blocks, coasters, notecards, holiday cards, and pillows. The 2nd Story Gallery & Studios participates in the popular Artragious Artwalk on the second Saturday of every month. Amelia Island is known for its vibrant arts community. On the second Saturday of each month, participating galleries open their doors, host events and open houses to showcase local and regional artists. Visitors and residents can meet the artists, enjoy refreshments, and find out what’s happening in the local arts community. 51 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
Many of the galleries offer workshops and painting classes, encouraging would-be artists who have always wanted to explore their artistic side. Artwalks are from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. during the spring and summer months, and 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. during the fall and winter months. Pam is rarely without one of her tried-and-true Nikon cameras, which allow her to capture the amazing shots of Amelia Island’s natural beauty and its many creatures. Her turtles and birds are favorites for those stopping at her gallery. When not photographing or working at her gallery, Pam can be found on the golf course or maybe kayaking on a local waterway. When she first moved to the island, her daughter, Jess, decided she needed a dog, and they went on a search at local rescue shelters. The result? They found the perfect dog, Lucky, now a constant companion who even helps at the gallery some days. With her characteristic smile, she shares, “My work is simple and reflects the beauty of the area where I live. I am thrilled that I can provide memories of Amelia Island and the surrounding area for visitors and residents to enjoy for years.” Pam’s work can be seen at the 2nd Story Gallery & Studios, located at 5 South 2nd Street in downtown Fernandina Beach or by visiting her website at www.2ndstorygallerystudios.com.

H
appy New Year! Now that the holidays are over and our lives are back to normal, it’s time to start thinking about what we can do when the weather begins to warm up and spring fever hits. As we are in “armchair” gardening season—figuring out new gardens, changes to existing beds, or browsing catalogs for new plants for pots on your patio, terrace, or in a bed – you might want to consider adding this new plant somewhere in your garden. It’s called Acacia Cousin Itt PP (Acacia cognata). Cousin Itt is a beautiful compact mounding evergreen shrub. It reminds me a little of the Blue Pacific shrub. It has very soft emerald green weeping foliage, which adds to its eye appeal. You can plant Cousin Itt in your garden or in a container; in either place, it will stand out. At 3 feet high and 4 feet wide fullgrown, you will have fall in love with this beautiful plant. This plant should be available locally. For Hydrangea lovers, here’s a real showstopper: the Lindsey Ann PP L.A. Dreamin’ Hydrangea. This plant dazzles with its spectacular display of

pinks, blues, and everything in-between. You don’t need to change your soil to accommodate this plant; it will perform on its own as it blooms and blooms again, from early summer through late fall. The large colorful flower heads are borne on sturdy upright systems. They re-bloom heavily on new and old wood. Be sure to give extra water when you first plant it. Plant in early morning sun with some afternoon shade in a well-drained, moisture-retentive soil. Prune in late fall after flowering or early spring. You’ll really love this impressive big-leafed Hydrangea in your garden. It grows to 5 feet high by 5 feet wide. To protect tender plants from winter kill, use your Christmas lights. Just wrap them around trees and large bushes and turn them on. The warmth from the

bulbs helps protect the plants. You can use sheets of newspaper as insulation or anything large enough to cover the plants, or try winter blankets for your plants. Actively growing plants are more susceptible to cold than dormant or semidormant plants. Reducing water helps harden growth, but moist soil holds and releases more heat than dry soil. Have you noticed the lovely Camellias blooming now? They will bloom through March. They make a nice statement as a specimen tree or planted in groups. Striking reds, pinks, and whites of all shades stand out against the glossy dark green leaves. Camellias grow in shade or partial sun; full sun will burn their glossy leaves. Curly Lady is a unique new PP Camellia. It features twisted curly branches and has large semi-double red blooms from winter to mid-spring. Grows 6 to 8 feet in height and 4 to 5 feet in width. A great plant for accent or filler in your garden or landscape. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

hen Tina and Marty Smith arrived on Amelia Island by way of A1A, they knew they were home. “I saw palm trees, oak tree canopies, and the brick pavers on the downtown crossroads, and said, ‘I’m home,’” Tina smiles. Originally from South Carolina, and most recently North Carolina, the couple had sold their businesses and were looking for a new adventure. “We wanted somewhere that reminded us of places we love, somewhere warm, and historic.” Amelia Island checked all the boxes. It didn’t take the couple long to find a lot in the historic downtown that showcased a beautiful oak tree

Our number one rule as we look at projects is to keep the trees and established nature,” Tina explains. When it came to their own home, they followed the same rule, knowing it would be a challenge with the large tree in the center. “I called several architects, and when I met John Dodd and pitched

my idea, I was super impressed with his confidence. He said that he does not draw over email or the phone, so I drove down every single time we worked on the plans, and the result was better than what we even wanted!” The tree challenge was a fun one, but the team creatively designed the house around it. When it was time to build, Tina and Marty knew that the unique design would call for some

TLC during construction, and local contractor Aaron Sweat was the perfect addition to the team. “We were more than pleased with Aaron. He’s more than a contractor, he’s a craftsman, a carpenter, creative, and some of the best features of our home were his ideas!” Aaron’s attention to detail was a huge reason for the success of building within the guidelines of the tree rule, which required meticulous craftsmanship, including hand-framing the roof and floor lines in places. As she did with her new home, Tina brought her passion for construction and real estate to her business, Island Life Realty Amelia. In addition to providing all-female boutique real estate services on the island, the Smiths enjoy building and selling homes, and they partnering with Aaron Sweat on a couple of homes around town. “I love putting people in houses I love,” Tina smiled. “I don’t ever sell or build a house I wouldn’t live in myself.” A tour of their new digs tells a lot about Tina and Marty and their commitment to historic preservation and the natural environment. “We 58 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

believe in being comfortable, inviting and bringing the outdoors in.” In fact, wherever you sit in the home, you enjoy beautiful views of the outdoors thanks to the abundance of windows. One thing you won’t find in this home is closets. “I want to enjoy life here, and the more stuff we have, the more work it requires, so everything in this home is built-in, and there is a place for everything.” Key to pulling off the closetfree design was the work of Wellborn Cabinets. For the home’s period lighting, Tina worked with David Singleton of Bandit’s Outback Antique Lighting to find historical pieces and then craft them for the home. “Everything we built was designed to feel historic, but with the ease of contemporary living,” she says. Life on Amelia is proving to be all the Smiths’ had hoped for, and more. With a downtown office she can walk to, a bunk room and over-garage apartment for their daughters and five grandchildren to visit, and an oak tree canopy they come home to each night, they are adoring their own piece of paradise in the historic downtown. 60 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

ne of my favorite things about the coming of winter is the opportunity to celebrate one of the most important people in my world. This year, my father turned 69 years old, and we went out to Bar Zin to celebrate. Bar Zin has anchored the island’s South End culinary scene for several years, but over the summer they had a full makeover, complete with a new theme and layout in the dining room and a new executive chef. Owner Tim Seyda, Chef Chris, and General Manager Christina Shannon have swung the hammer and hit the nail squarely on the head.
As we walked in, we were greeted by the hostess in front of their brand-new bar and shown to our seats in the lovely new dining room. The tables are stout, made of dark wood, and in the library room, the banquettes in the corners are covered with a lush, soft fabric. The atmosphere is inviting and comfortable, with lots of artwork and a staff that is quick and attentive. 62 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
Our server, Addison, answered my many questions with great patience and aplomb. She walked us through the new menu, the night’s featured entrees, and drink specials from the bar. We were having a hard time choosing from the wonderful looking small plates on the menu, but settled on something classic, Shepherd’s Pie. Addison suggested a glass of Votre Sante Pinot Noir from Francis Ford Coppola with our appetizer. The wine was light, fruit forward without being sweet, and the perfect combination for what was to follow. The Shepherd’s Pie is just as you might imagine, layers of potato and chopped meat in a rich gravy with sweet peas, but topped with a truffled potato mousse and served in a rocks glass. It’s bottom layer is made of decadently creamy grits to catch all of the cascading flavors. Next, we tried another red wine dish, the Rosemary Smoked Lamb. The dish is a simple lamb stew with pearled cous cous, but the flavor and presentation are divine. The bowl comes to the table domed in clear glass, enveloped in smoke. When the dish reaches the table, the dome is removed and the rich smell of the smoke fills the air at the table and lingers, accentuating the rich flavors. For our entrée, we decided to share an order of their roasted fish special. The fish this evening was a beautiful fillet of flounder. The skin was served facing up and impossibly crisp, giving the sweet, delicate flaked fish a bit of texture that made each bite perfect. The nightly feature is served over “dirty” rice with bits of foie gras and andouille sausage, which the pinot noir handled splendidly. We capped our night with a bourbon from the bar and shared an apple crisp. We skipped the candles and the celebration and reflected on how amazing our dinner had been. I knew we would be well taken care of and our meal would be delicious, but my expectations were far exceeded. Take the opportunity to come to Bar Zin in the Palmetto Walk Shopping Center on First Coast Highway. They are open for lunch from Tuesday to Saturday and dinner from Monday to Saturday.

backwoods
Cumberland BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTOS BY TROY ALLEN LAIR
I
’ve visited Cumberland Island so many times I feel I could hike the backcountry blindfolded. But my husband, Troy, had only taken a day trip there, and he was eager to explore the trails with me on a four-day backpacking trip. So I booked a campsite, purchased our ferry tickets online, and off we went. St. Marys is the gateway to Cumberland Island, Georgia’s largest and southernmost barrier island. Here pristine maritime forests, undeveloped beaches, and wide marshes whisper the stories of both man and nature. Natives, missionaries, enslaved African Americans, and wealthy industrialists all walked here. The island is also home to over 9,800 acres of federally designated wilderness, and it’s one of my favorite places to unplug and take in the beauty of this magical place. As our starting date drew near, the weather was not working in our favor, with four days of cold and rain forecast. Undaunted, we packed extra clothes and rain gear and set out on our adventure. We arrived at the Seacamp Dock about 10 a.m., grabbed our gear, and hiked eight miles to the center of the island to a primitive campsite called Yankee Paradise. This is my favorite place to camp because we can set up a home base, and then hike to various parts of the island throughout the long weekend. 76 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
It was tough crawling out of our warm sleeping bags each morning, but once we set out on the trails, we were in our element. Our first stop was Plum Orchard, an 1898 Georgian Revival mansion built by Lucy Carnegie for her son, George, and his wife, Margaret Thaw. This mansion was donated to the National Park Foundation by the Carnegie family in 1971. Troy and I took a private tour of the mansion that included an indoor pool and a squash court. Very impressive for 1898! Our second day of hiking took us to the beach, where we walked for miles, searching for shells and taking photos. The rain and wind was bone-chilling cold, and after a few hours, we were eager to get back to our tent, where we feasted on ramen noodles and chai tea. On our third day, we hiked to the north end of the island to see the First African Baptist Church. This humble, one-room church was established in 1893 by AfricanAmerican residents of the island. Some of the founders were born into slavery and emancipated following the Civil War. The church served as a free place of worship and community center for the north end community known as the Settlement. On our last day, we broke camp and hiked south, down to the ranger station, where we were able to get out of the rain for a little while, and then miraculously, the sun came out! We hiked over to the ruins of a mansion that was once called Dungeness. First built in 1884, the Dungeness mansion was intended as a winter home for Thomas Carnegie, his wife, Lucy, and their nine children. The mansion caught fire in 1959 and only the brick and stone walls remain. Although in ruins, it still remains one of the most picturesque and visited spots on the island. There’s a little bit of everything on Cumberland: pristine beaches, maritime forest, salt water marshes, and more, all rich in history and constantly in flux as the island is impacted by tides, currents, and storms.
