Festival organizers are offering another star-studded series of concerts, including world-renowned violinist Midori, the New York Philharmonic String Quartet, and pianist Valentina Lisitsa.

ISLANDER Philip Kelly Deana Basile Kelly Publishers and Editors Tom Barrett Art Director Mark O’Day Sales Manager

In its inaugural season 20 years ago, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival offered a compact two-week schedule in early June, and it was a whirlwind event. Concerts were staged at venues around Amelia Island almost every night, but if you had already left for the summer or happened to be away in June, you missed the entire event. As many will recall, the reason for the June schedule was that a new festival like ours couldn’t compete for world-class talent in the middle of the winter symphony season because performers had already made commitments, and nobody knew what to expect from the new festival on Amelia Island. Things have certainly changed in the past few years. As our beloved AICMF has become one of the nation’s foremost chamber music festivals, its schedule now includes a full slate of concerts running from January to May. Again this year, festival organizers are offering another star-studded series of concerts, including worldrenowned virtuoso violinist Midori, the New York Philharmonic String Quartet with Drew Petersen, and charismatic pianist Valentina Lisitsa. Like so many events this past year, Covid precautions mean that some of the concerts will be presented live at island venues and others will be online events to ensure the safety of musicians and audiences. Also appearing this season are the acclaimed Dover String Quartet, Pinchas Zukerman with the Zukerman Trio, violinist Chee Yun Kim, and the popular bluegrass group Balsam Range. As always, we offer our congratulations to General and Artistic Director Christopher Rex, who has guided the festival to its current heights. He continues to attract the finest talent in the world of classical music to Amelia Island, while offering a chamber music season of great programming that always delights and surprises. We also want to acknowledge AICMF Executive Director Dr. Joe Marasco, who has been so important in establishing the festival as a premier event, and AICMF Board President Emma Bledsoe for their tireless efforts. We are grateful to the local businesses, generous donors, and tireless volunteers who make each season a resounding success. In addition this month, we take a look at new local non-profit organization called Bring Your Brokenness, which is creating a residential home for people suffering from eating disorders, which effect the lives of millions of Americans; catch up with local songwriter and musician Sean McCarthy, who has a new album out called Last House on the Beach; enjoy another “Fernandina Faces” from Dickie Anderson on Kathy Russell, whose responsibilities as Parks and Recreation Manager include preserving Egans Creek Greenway; share a “Backyard Adventure” on a camping “staycation” at Crooked River State Park in St. Marys, Georgia; and much, much more.

With 30 million Americans struggling with eating disorders at some point in their lives, a new nonprofit called Bring Your Brokenness is determined to offer some real help.

Driven by a new relationship with a son given up for adoption years ago, Amelia Island’s Sean McCarthy delivers an inspired new album called Last House on the Beach.

As Parks and Recreation Manager for the City of Fernandina Beach, one of Kathy Russell’s favorite responsibilities is maintaining and promoting Egans Creek Greenway.

If you’ve been spending too much time at home but don’t want to go too far, you might want to consider a camping staycation at Crooked River State Park in St. Marys, Georgia.

daptability. Ingenuity. Creativity. Malleability. Flexibility. This acrostic not only spells Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival, it employs the words that have shaped 2020. “All of us have been required to reset and be resilient concerning our lives and our plans,” says Emma Bledsoe, AICMF Board President. “Our plans have had to be adjusted and readjusted. But, like everyone else this year, we are persevering and will continue to do so.” The Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival pressed forward by providing some virtual performances on their website at www. AICMF.com. The Christiania Trio’s full concert, featuring the music of Schumann and Mendelssohn, presented in fall of 2020, was performed before a small, socially-distanced audience. “Please know that as we continue to press forward, the Festival will continue!” exclaims Bledsoe. “And it will continue 11 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

in adapted, ingenious, creative, malleable, and flexible ways that will not only keep us safe and healthy, but it will continue to provide the source of hope, comfort, and enjoyment that we all so desperately need.” The Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival announces a host of exciting concerts for 2021, their 20th season. The line-up of international and national musical stars, as well as local artists, are scheduled to perform concerts both live in island venues and virtually for the safety of both musicians and audiences. Beginning in January, the acclaimed Dover String Quartet opens the season, which extends through twelve spectacular concerts and concludes in April. “It is exciting to present this season with both social distancing and online concerts because the pandemic has taught us, in the performing arts, how indispensable the audience is,”

JANUARY 2021

Beginning with its inaugural year, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival knew the importance of music education. Master Classes and tutoring for their Young Resident Artists program played an important role in the Festival’s first concert season. This program has not only thrived, but it has continued and expanded to become The Spring Institute. Here, the Beth Newdome Fellowship Artists, promising and acclaimed students from the nation’s leading conservatories and universities, are mentored by professional musicians and AICMF’s quartet-in-residence, The Dover Quartet. This training program culminates in a series of public performances, most of which are free of charge. Committed to education, the Festival recognizes that students and audiences benefit and learn from attending Master Classes. Therefore, while here to perform their concerts, the Dover Quartet will conduct a free Master Class for young artists who are currently attending Jacksonville area schools and universities. Attendance by all who love to listen and learn is encouraged. In addition, partnering with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Nassau County, AICMF has developed a Strings Education Program, providing instruments and lessons for a five-day-a week learning experience. Student recitals, as well as performances by professional musicians, have been presented at the Miller Freedom Center and the Roberts Learning and Achievement Center. These programs will resume when the current Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

BLUEGRASS ENSEMBLE BALSAM RANGE AT THE SADLER RANCH

Balsam Range

For the young, and the young-atheart, Peter and the Wolf will be staged and performed for children on Saturday, May 23, sponsored by the AICMF’s Young Patrons. Considered a symphonic fairy tale for children and written by Sergei Prokofiev, it is the composer’s most frequently performed work. Peter and the Wolf will be performed as a fourhand piano concert by Julie Coucheron and Elizabeth Pridgen, accompanied by dancers under the direction of Susie Dodge from the Amelia Island Dance Festival and narrated by popular local actor Frank O’Donnell. Two performances will be presented at the Amelia Community Theater’s Tom and Sally Henderson Auditorium. 20 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

JANUARY 2021

On May 23, the Festival will present the final concert of their 20th anniversary season with the popular bluegrass ensemble, Balsam Range. 2018 International Bluegrass Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year, Balsam Range has become one of the genre’s most award-winning acts. Since forming in 2007, the group has garnered 13 IBMA awards on the heels of 8 critically acclaimed albums. The performers have left audiences spellbound while headlining major festivals from coast-to-coast, selling out venues across the nation, and in multiple appearances at the Grand Ole Opry. The concert will take place on the Sadler Ranch auditorium stage. The Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival has been presenting the world’s greatest artists and providing music education for promising young students since their founding in 2001. “The ability to bring to Amelia Island the greatest musical artists in the world has only been possible through the exceptional generosity of our individual and corporate sponsors, the dedication of our Board of Directors, volunteers, and staff, and the enthusiastic support of our audiences,” declares the festival’s General and Artistic Director Christopher Rex. “I am so grateful for all who have worked so hard to help present this fantastic 20th season celebration in a safe and responsible way during these challenging times.” “Music truly soothes the soul,” observes Board of Directors President Emma Bledsoe. “And through this extraordinary group of musicians we hope you will be refreshed and inspired, particularly as we look forward to a healthy New Year!” Performance dates and times are subject to change. Please visit www. AICMF.com for the latest information and concert updates. Tickets for all concerts are available online or by calling (904) 261-1779.

JIMMIE STONE : COURTESY PAGG

The Plantation Artists’ Guild and Gallery (PAGG) and its volunteer corps, Art Lovers, are looking for photographs taken on Amelia Island during the year 2020. Their project, “2020 – A Look Back,” sponsored by Courtyard/ SpringHill Suites by Marriott Amelia Island, mourns and celebrates this amazing year of challenges. PAGG wants to tell the year’s story in photos – 100 of them! The photos, from residents and visitors, hope to reveal the emotions of this extraordinary year, displaying adaptation, humor, and resilience. And it is not just about the pandemic, as the year also included elections, storms, comets, birthday celebrations, weddings, holidays, a football season, and much, much more. If a picture is worth a thousand words, imagine the value of 100 photos telling the story of this unique year. The winning photos will be assembled into a collection displayed in an exhibition at various locations, beginning with the opening of the Courtyard/SpringHill Suites Marriott Amelia Island in Spring 2021. From there, the collection will travel to local galleries, banks, retail outlets, and public buildings. Additional sponsors include Baptist Medical Center Nassau, the Amelia Island Tourist Development Council, Fernandina Beach News-Leader, and Main Street. For more information, visit www.paggart.com.

usan McCarthy’s grandparents lived in a trailer park when she was a young girl, and visiting them was one of her favorite things to do. “It was a wonderful place,” says Susan. “I always remember how the neighbors and families would get together. What fond memories I have of those days!” Trailer park life has stayed with her over the years, so when Susan decided to open an antiques and collectibles shop in Fernandina Beach, Trailer Park Collectibles seemed like the perfect name. Susan opened her business on Alachua Street 13 years ago, and 11 years ago moved the business to Centre Street, where today her antique mall-style business hosts 35 vendors and consignors. Trailer Park’s inventory includes a little bit of everything, including furniture, tableware, nautical decor, vinyl records, and antiques of all kinds like jewelry, linens, funky signs, pottery, and more. “Most of my vendors have been with me for years,” says Susan. “They are like family to me, and passionate about what they do. They are always restocking their shelves and booths!”

And why are so many people buying older furniture and decorative items now? Susan attributes it to a creative force that is present in decorating these days. “People don’t want to walk into a furniture store and buy new things that other people already have,” says Susan. “They want to decorate their homes as they please, using things that reflect their own personalities and lifestyles.” For do-it-yourselfers, Susan sells Farmhouse Paint, a top-notch brand that is so easy and effortless that anyone can enjoy painting with professional results. Susan will be offering painting classes starting this fall. Susan loved the trailer park life so much, she purchased a 37-foot trailer of her own, where she now lives with her husband, Brian, and their dog, Ziggy. She may have downsized her own lifestyle considerably, but Trailer Park Collectibles is chock full of unique gifts and vintage items that will make you smile. For more information, call (904) 491-4461 or visit www.trailerparkcollectibles.com, or check their Facebook page for their latest offerings. Trailer Park Collectibles is located at 702 Centre Street.

ana McCoy of Amelia Care Management has strong ties to Amelia Island. Her great-grandfather, Thomas O’Hagan, was a keeper of the Amelia Island lighthouse, and both of her grandfathers worked at the mill. Fifteen years ago, Dana and her family decided to make Amelia Island their full-time residence. “There are so many things we love about living here. We spend time on the beach and enjoy walks along the river. We love going downtown and eating at our favorite restaurants. I feel like I belong to something here and I want to make a difference for others in my community,” she says. Dana is active in the community and with her church, St. Michael’s. She is the parish nurse for Amelia Plantation Chapel. She has been a member of Rotary, on the board of the YMCA, and is involved with several small business groups and the Nassau County Chamber of Commerce. Dana is currently the owner and care manager of Amelia Care Management. A registered nurse for thirty years, she has spent the last fifteen caring for the elderly of Amelia Island. Amelia Care has partnerships with therapists, dietitians, doctors, and other support services. “This is a very personal service and exactly the kind of work I love to do. Our goal is to work one-on-one with clients to help them age with dignity on their terms.” Amelia Care Management is located at 22 South 6th Street. othing makes Elizabeth Bandyk happier than hearing, “I have someone that needs you.” Originally from Pennsylvania, Elizabeth and her family moved to Amelia Island five years ago. You may know her as a volunteer with the Health Department or a licensed realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Chaplin Williams Realty. Two years ago, she combined her passion for helping others and her love of nursing when she started CURA Care Management. CURA is a nationally certified, insured, and professional corporation, and Elizabeth is an advanced practice nurse offering a holistic approach to coordinating the care needs for individuals using specialized care plans with many resources. “No one should be alone when they’re dealing with difficult situations. I’m the eyes, ears, and voice for my clients, and a lifeline for family members who can’t be here,” says Elizabeth, a registered nurse for 37 years. “When my father became ill, I was fortunate to be able to spend his last days with him. It was a gift to be there, to hold his hand and know he wasn’t alone. He actually came up with the name for CURA, which stands for Caring and Utmost Respect for the Aging.” “My mission is to provide nursing with compassion and care and also help my clients coordinate appointments, file insurance forms, make sure they’re utilizing their benefits— anything they need help with, I’m here and happy to help.” To reach Elizabeth Bandyk and CURA, email eabandyk@gmail. com, call (863) 608-2013, or visit www.curacaremanager.com.

A HOME FOR

With 30 million Americans struggling with eating disorders at some point in their lives, a new non-profit called Bring Your Brokenness is determined to offer some real help. BY JULIE SIMMONS

his year just ending, more than any other time in our lives, has illustrated how uncertain tomorrow can be. Blame it on COVID-19, or perhaps a loss in the family, a project at work, or peer pressure, but for many, stressful, uncertain roads can lead to certain hard times. “For me, it was an eating disorder,” says Amie Shields. Amie is a beautiful Amelia Island wife, mother of four, and recent founder of Bring Your Brokenness, a 501(c)3 charitable organization with a mission to provide a safe and loving environment for those with eating disorders, offering them hope and healing for a life transformation through God’s Word. “It might surprise you to learn that an estimated 30 million Americans will struggle with an eating disorder at some point in their lifetime,” says Amie. “And only 20 percent get the needed help they need. In fact, eating disorders represent the highest death rate of all mental illnesses, with an individual dying every 52 minutes.” That eye-opening statistic suggests that perhaps we as a nation are not talking enough about eating disorders, but not

Amie. She is courageous, and she isn’t willing to hide under the covers anymore. “I am passionate about this challenge because it has stolen over two decades of my life, and I want to help others. My past is full of deep abuse that eventually fueled dangerous behaviors, which led to anorexia-nervosa. I almost lost everything, including my family and my life, before I found the help I needed.” In 2016, new to Fernandina Beach, with a home under construction and four school-aged children, Amie found herself admitted to in-patient rehabilitation. “It was the longest, hardest time of my life, but my children told me I was killing myself and making them watch,” she says. “That was it. I knew I had to seek help – for them.” “The challenge with eating disorder rehabilitation is the number of staff required, from doctors to dieticians to therapists and the list goes on.” Due to the rigorous care required, the support comes with a price tag of $1,500 to $2,000 per day, and patients need three to six months of care on average. “The continued on next page

fact that I made it to a treatment center is against all odds,” Amie acknowledges, “and I promised myself that when I was well, I was going to change the statistics!” Today, Amie is the founder of Bring Your Brokenness and leader of a solid group of supporters committed to stand with her as she ministers to and rehabilitates young people with stories like hers. “In 2017, I began blogging and I was overwhelmed at the number of people wanting to connect who had no support system.” In May 2018, Amie founded her organization and launched a number of support groups. Feeling called by God to open a residential center, Amie couldn’t shake the passion, and two years to the day later, she found the perfect property. That deal fell through, but within a few hours, a new and better opportunity appeared. Last month, an open house and prayer service were held at Bring Your Brokenness’s brand-new residential facility in Yulee. “God has provided beyond all expectations,” says Amie. “Our goal is to open six beds on October 1 this year, but we want to do it right and we’ll take the time to do that.” For anyone interested in getting involved with Amie’s mission, lots of opportunities are available, from help with an interior remodel to electricians and plumbers and, of course, donors to help purchase supplies and furniture for the home. Sean McCarthy

Driven by a new relationship with a son given up for adoption years ago, Amelia Island’s Sean McCarthy delivers an inspired new album called Last House on the Beach. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY SHERRY CARTER

T

hings have changed quite a bit since Sean McCarthy graced the cover of the Amelia Islander Magazine 23 years ago, but McCarthy’s brand of “Coastal Country” music endures today; in fact, it just keeps getting better. Writing his first song when he was only 12, McCarthy headed to Nashville when he was old enough to leave home, learning the craft of songwriting from some of the best in the business. He started out playing at The Bluebird Cafe and Douglas Corner Café, combining country, bluegrass, and tropical with coastal lyrical themes. He produced one album in Nashville, then another when he returned to Fernandina Beach, where he has been considered one the best performers on the island. But that doesn’t mean there haven’t been a few bumps in the road for the talented storyteller, songwriter, artist, and boat captain. When he was a young man, his teenage girlfriend became pregnant, and her parents arranged to give the baby up for adoption, forcing the couple to end their relationship. McCarthy would go on to have three marriages, three children

– Rorrey, Erin, and Cobie – and a successful music career, but something was always missing from his life. “I have always played locally, never really playing any large venues or outside of our small town,” says McCarthy. “I hadn’t written a new song since 2011. I was of the mindset that my time had come and gone, and I had always been just that close, but missed out on any chance of my music ever reaching a broader audience. Until someone special came into my life.” That “someone special” was his son, Jason, the baby that was given up for adoption 35-years before. “When Jason reached out to me, my heart stopped,” says McCarthy. “I couldn’t help but cry that a child I lost so long ago might find his way back into my life.” The first night the two met, Jason asked McCarthy to play him his favorite song. “My favorite song has always been “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and by the time I finished, he was crying, says McCarthy. “Jason told me that his late mother’s continued on next page

favorite movie was The Wizard of Oz, and that it had felt to him like she was in the room looking over us and sending her blessing to this new relationship.” Jason is a Hollywood film/television/ digital media producer in Los Angeles, and he was just what McCarthy needed to get himself out of his musical funk. “I hadn’t written a song in years, and Jason challenged me to write a song for him,” says McCarthy. “I was terrified that I couldn’t do it, but within a few days I had a song for him. Then I wrote more, and more, with Jason encouraging me all the way. By the time I got to five new songs, he said, ‘Sean, how would you feel about officially formulating a band with some of your long-time musician friends and even putting together a third album?” “With Jason’s encouragement, I reached out to some of the boys I’d played with for years and asked if they would be willing to join the Sean McCarthy Band and record some new music together,” says McCarthy. “I formed an official band with musicians Hotshot Carter, Marcus Carter, Ernie Ealum, and Daniel Daly. Within a few months, we had a website, graphics, social media pages, online music channels, booked shows, and I was able to coordinate with longtime producer and friend John Gould of Key of Sea Studios, along with Mark Deaton and Hugh Williams, to record our third album, Last House on the Beach, along with numerous singles such as ‘Sarah’s Island,’ a song about Sarah Alice Broadbent written for the new development on Crane Island, and ‘Low Country Christmas,’ our first original Christmas single.” As things have been coming together in McCarthy’s life, he’s also starting a new marine concierge and consulting service called Hey Captain, featuring yacht sales, yacht management, consulting, and captain for hire. “So many good things are happing right now,” exclaims McCarthy. “I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family, friends, and the Amelia Island community.” For information about McCarthy’s music, visit seanmccarthyband.com. FERNANDINA FACES

Cape May Warbler

Kathy Russell BY KAREN MILLER PHOTO BY STEVE LEIMBERG, WWW.UNSEENIMAGES.COM

K

athy Russell, Parks and Recreation Manager for the City of Fernandina Beach, loves her job and the island she calls home. She is a woman of many talents. One of her duties is the management of Egans Creek Greenway. The Greenway is a protected area of over 300 acres that runs north-to-south along Egans Creek. This unique green space was opened for public use in the summer of 2000, and it continues to be a popular island park offering a variety of activities. Kathy is responsible for coordinating its maintenance and she is a passionate promoter for it. Kathy received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida. After graduation, she landed a job in animal care at the Jacksonville Zoo, then at SeaWorld Orlando, where she worked with birds as an aviculturist with responsibility for parrots, ducks, penguins, and puffins. Relocating to Amelia Island, she felt called to teaching. As a science teacher for 17 years at Fernandina Beach High School, she taught primarily Oceanography/Marine Science and Environmental Science. A self-described girl who loves water, Kathy coached the high school swim team for 10 years. When she was not teaching, Kathy worked part-time for the city running their aquatic programs. When the pool at the Atlantic Recreation Center was heated and opened year-round, the city was looking for a full-time Aquatics and Greenway Manager and Kathy was ready for a change. The job was hers, and she has been in the position for 15 years. When not working, she indulges her love of scuba diving. She is a certified instructor and enjoys sharing her passion with her students. Kathy and her husband, Dennis, love animals and operate a small zoo of their own! The couple manages quite a menagerie, which includes 2 dogs, 2 cats, 3 African Gray parrots, 6 ducks, some chickens, 2 turkeys, a Zebu (a mini-cow), a mini-donkey, 47 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

and 2 goats. Dennis was once an elephant trainer for the Jacksonville Zoo, and he coordinated the couple’s wedding inside an elephant show ring. Love of the outdoors was passed to their daughter, Amanda, who is an Environmental Scientist for a global engineering firm. Kathy is thankful for the foresight of the City of Fernandina Beach in purchasing the land that now makes up the Greenway, as well as the North Beach and Seaside Parks. She is passionate about the Greenway, although she is increasingly concerned about “chemical and biological pollution,” noting that issues can arise when properties that are adjacent to the Greenway are not careful about pesticides and invasive plants. “What I love about Egans Creek Greenway is based on the connection to nature that it provides. Being there gives us the opportunity to visit and spend some time absorbing what nature has to offer: the sounds, smells, visual beauty, and hopefully a glimpse of a wild thing that one feels privileged to share this place with,” says Kathy. The Greenway and Amelia Island are lucky to have such a talented and passionate woman defending and promoting some of the things that make our island so special.

IN THE GARDEN Christmas Carol Camellia

crazy for camellias With the cooler months here and the “armchair gardening” season upon us, consider adding new Camillias called Christmas Carol and Early Wonder to your landscape. BY BETTY MORRELL

I

hope you had a wonderful holiday season! We are now ready to do some serious “armchair” gardening. No physical exertion here, just a little brain power, and a big imagination! While you sit out the coolest months of the year, you can plan what bright new shrubs and striking blossoms you would like to see in your garden next spring and summer, and where you’d like to see them. I’m thinking about an awesome Magnolia, which I can’t wait to see in bloom. Stellar Ruby Magnolia is a new evergreen tree with banana-scented, ruby-colored flowers appearing in late spring, and reappearing throughout the summer and early fall. This new (PP) Southern Living plant is known for being disease- and pest-resistant, and it is also heat- and drought-tolerant. It has a longer blooming season than most, and it returns year after year. Stellar Ruby is also salt-tolerant. Plant it in full sun to part-shade, fertilize it in early spring before the first flush, and if you want to shape this tree, do that also before the first flush. Use this beauty as an accent, in the landscape, as a

TIP OF T HE M O N T H Now is the time to cut back roses (knee high) and plant bare root roses. Check the mulch around your plants and trees for any mold underneath. If there’s mold, replace it. If no mold, turn the mulch over to air the roots, leaving 4 to 6 inches clear around trunk or stems.

border, or in a container. It’s great for cut flowers, as a hedge, in mass plantings, or plant it in your woodland garden. I know Camellias are not summerblooming plants, but I just have to introduce you to an amazing new camellia called Christmas Carol. This unique plant is a Southern Living hybrid cross between a Japonica and the weeping Sasanqua. This evergreen plant sports red, bell-shaped flowers with white edging, blooming from autumn through Christmas. Christmas Carol has a graceful, semi-sweeping habit with compact growth of 5 to 7 feet in height and 3 to 5 feet in width. The beautiful shiny green

foliage sets off the rest of the plant. Plant it in full sun to part shade. Fertilize in early spring, and no pruning is necessary for this beauty. A profuse bloomer is the new Early Wonder Camellia, with its lavender-rose formal double flower that blooms fall through the late winter and into spring. It can be grown in full sun to partial shade. Early Wonder has a spreading to rounding habit, growing 6 to 8 feet in height and 4 to 6 feet in width. It’s a really stunning bloomer. Plant the Christmas Carol and the Early Wonder in your Camellia garden, or use them as specimen plants in the landscape. Another great plant for spring and summer blooms is the Light Show Red Bottlebrush. This lovely compact bush grows only 2 to 3 feet in height and spreads about the same. This is another salt- and drought-tolerant plant that will brighten up your garden with color. If you have any questions, please email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy New Year and Happy Gardening!

he first time we fell in love with Amelia Island was in 1974,” remembers Keith Thompson, standing with his wife, Marilyn, in the gathering room of their newly renovated home in Cape Sound. “I was on the Ohio State University faculty at the time and I was collaborating on a book with a graduate student at the University of North Florida. We really needed to spend some time together, and Marilyn and I loved camping. I opened my map, and the best, closest campground was at Fort Clinch State Park.” The couple laughs remembering their days camping and walking the beach near Fort Clinch, dreaming about the day when they might live here permanently. It only took them 17 years to realize their dream, and they’ve never looked back. The Thompsons’ first home on Amelia was a condominium on First Avenue. From there, they decided they wanted a larger home, which they found in Golfside South, before finally moving to Cape Sound.

“We enjoy buying a home, renovating it, making a life, and then eventually moving to something new,” they share. And when you see their talent for home design, it’s easy to understand why they like doing this so much. Contemporary to the core, this home’s design overflows with attention to details, which were delivered in partnership with Douglas K. Design. “We met Doug through mutual friends and thoroughly appreciated ideating and working together.” One example of the combined creativity is the home’s fireplace between the family room and kitchen. The original space felt narrow, so they moved the wall back and separated the two rooms with the fireplace, which is one of the crowning jewels of the lower floor. Doug echoed his admiration for this project. “Keith is supertalented and into the details,” says Doug. “He project-managed

it all, and if something wasn’t completed on time, he’d roll up his sleeves and do it himself.” Another example of the brilliance in this home is the gallery-like design. “There was empty space, so we leveraged it for what it was and created a gallery-like appeal,” says Doug. The result is extraordinary, particularly as the home consists of three stories and an elevator! Mooney Custom Woodworks was key to delivering many features, including the gallery shelving and television slider door, as well as the kitchen, which continues the contemporary theme with its blends of white hues and prominent garage-door cabinets. Some of the favorite features of the home were created when Keith put on his toolbelt and got to work. For instance, he built the vanities and installed the lighting in the powder room and upstairs bath, and he built the unique computer station with cord storage by the back entryway. Keith’s talent especially shines in the master

Story & Song BOOKSTORE BISTRO With its bookstore, gift shop, and art gallery, Story & Song is a neighborhood favorite offering breakfast and lunch, coffee and tea, beer and wine, and so much more. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY SHERRY CARTER

R

ecently I stopped in to say hello to Mark and Donna PazKauffman at Story & Song Neighborhood Bookstore Bistro. Mark and Donna have made a life out of opening bookstores for others and wanted to have one of their own. They decided to plant a seed in their own backyard, and Story & Song has bloomed into an exciting and interactive bookstore with a top-notch eatery. At Story & Song, you’ll find an invigorating amalgam of bookstore, courtyard, gift shop, art gallery, performance space, and cafe. In the Story & Song bistro, they are preparing delicious food made in-house, by hand and with love for island residents and visitors alike. Fresh baked pastries, coffee and tea, beer and wine, and a fantastic menu that is ever evolving are reason enough to stop in, but the playful nature of the store, its inviting atmosphere, and its digital connectivity keep customers stomachs and imaginations satiated. As the school calendar inched ever closer to Christmas, time was slipping away faster each day. Before lunch one day at Fernandina Beach High School where I teach Culinary Arts, I called in and placed a lunch order for pick up. The menu at Story & Song is concise, with a focus on quality and good health, and loaded with literary references. The selections are perfect for folks looking for a delicious meal without indulging too heavily in the middle of the day. I had to squeeze a lot of running around into my lunch break, so I opted for a snack I could eat on the go and an entree I could enjoy when I got back to school. At Story & Song, many of the dishes are given names from favorite books. Eat, Pray, Love Hummus and Flatbread is the perfect opener. Pieces of flatbread pita that are seasoned and toasted perfectly are served with a creamy homemade hummus spread. The to-go cup of hummus fit perfectly into a cup holder, allowing me to enjoy the dish as I was moving around town. Finally, I made it back to school before the bell rang and I was 60 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

able to sit down and enjoy my Story & Song Cobb Salad. The Cobb Salad is a classic that never disappoints. I opted for the creamy basil vinaigrette and would encourage anyone to do the same. After an ooey-gooey week of baking Christmas cookies with students, my soul was crying out for fresh vegetables, and the Cobb Salad was perfect.

Story & Song Neighborhood Bookstore and Bistro is an island treasure, located in Amelia Park Town Center at 1430 Park Avenue off of South 14th Street. There is plenty of parking for a crowd. You may dine-in, carry out, or have a luncheon catered on site. The store is open seven days a week, and the Bistro serves daily from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays. Be sure to ask about their Soup Subscription, a weekly offering of delightful homemade soups to warm the soul through the chilly months, made available each Monday for pick up. It is a delicious way to support a local business and feed the family.

BACKYARD ADVENTURE

Camping

at Crooked River STORY AND PHOTOS BY KAREN MILLER

I

f you’ve been spending too much time at home these days, a staycation is a great way to boost your spirits and begin a new year! My husband, Troy, and I recently went on a camping trip to Crooked River State Park, located in St. Marys, Georgia, just a few miles from Fernandina Beach. Crooked River is the perfect spot for enjoying the Intracoastal Waterway and the beautiful maritime forest. The park’s roomy campsites are surrounded by palmettos and Spanish moss-draped oaks, with ample amenities like hot showers, laundry facilities, a boat ramp, playground, bike rentals, and nature center, along with 4 miles of hiking trails. One of the things that drew us to Crooked River was their prompt and safe handling of Covid-19 restrictions for their visitors. The park still offer many activities like guided hikes, but social distancing is mandatory in the park and visitors gladly comply. Troy and I were excited to do some hiking, so we set out on the trails as soon as we arrived. We started out on the Palmetto Trail, a trek through south Georgia’s longleaf pine flatwoods, home to an array of plants like saw palmetto, wiregrass, wax myrtle, and gallberry. The open fields are ideal for watching woodpeckers, warblers, osprey, nuthatch, and other birds. Armadillos feed in the understory, while gopher tortoises come out of their dens to graze on small grasses. The Sempervirens Trail features old-growth hardwoods, a fact hinted at by the Latin translation of the trail’s name, which means “ever-living.” This trail boasts five Georgia Champion Trees: the staggerbush lyonia, Florida soapberry, myrtle oak, chapman oak, and Carolina holly. 76 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

After completing these two trails, we stopped by the Nature Center to see their collection of turtles and snakes, enjoying a short tour through the center conducted by Lewis, a Crooked River volunteer. The center is especially proud of its river tank, a large aquarium featuring fish from the Crooked River. Located near the Nature Center is yet another trail called the Bay Boardwalk. Part of this trail is closed for renovations, but we were able to hike a portion that included a 15-ft. tall birding platform. Crooked River is part of the Colonial Coast Birding Trail, which features 300 species of birds, and many of them can be found at the park, including bald eagles, red shouldered hawks, painted buntings, and great blue herons. If you’re not fond of camping, do not let that deter you from spending a staycation at Crooked River. The park features 11 cottages located directly on the bluff, with wide river views. Picnic shelters are available for day use, and nearly all the park’s amenities can be reached using walking paths. Gopher tortoises, Georgia’s state reptile, are found in several nesting site locations, and a special Pollinator Meadow Restoration Project is currently in progress. Crooked River’s website is updated weekly, so the best way to get updates on events is to visit them online before you go at gastateparks.org/CrookedRiver. For camping reservations, visit www.reserveamerica.com. You may also call the park office at (912) 882-5256. We had a fabulous backyard adventure at Crooked River, taking photos, walking the trails, cooking over a campfire, and visiting with other campers. We hope you’ll treat yourself to a Crooked River staycation of your own!
