This month, Amelia Island once again welcomes its annual musical extravaganza known as the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival. Now in its twenty-first season, the Festival has firmly established itself as one of the premier chamber music festivals in the country with another stellar line-up of concerts, as it continues to wow concertgoers year after year. After kicking off the season in December with a holiday show by The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, the stars continue to shine this month with renowned American soprano Renee Fleming and, over the next several months, performances by the Zuckerman Trio, the Danish String Quartet, and Tango Argentina. We are so grateful to have enjoyed these many years of extraordinary music from the acclaimed world-renowned musicians who have appeared on the island. General and Artistic Director Christopher Rex continues to attract a star-studded line-up each year, as well as offering a great mix of fresh and eclectic concerts on the program. Throughout the history of the festival, we have been treated to events at Amelia Park, family concerts with the kids, and performances by such world-renowned talents as Yo-Yo Ma, Hilary Hahn, Itzhak Perlman, and a host of other extraordinary classical musicians. The AICMF is now a months-long concert series that begins in January and lasts until the end of April with the season finale at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. Nothing compares to hearing live musical performances. The masterpieces of the chamber music canon are so enjoyable because they were composed to be performed in smaller, intimate settings, and Amelia Island’s varied settings make for an incomparable listening experience. In addition to Wynton Marsalis and Renee Fleming, this year’s highlights include the Polish Wieniawski Philharmonic, the Danish String Quartet, Tango Argentina, the Gibson Brothers, and the season finale with the Zukerman Trio. We look forward with anticipation to this year’s offerings, and we extend our gratitude to Chris Rex, Executive Director Eric Sakurai, and all the people who work tirelessly to make the festival such a success. In addition this month, we take a look at an exciting archaeological dig taking place on Big Talbot Island by Dr. Keith Ashley and the University of North Florida Field School, which is uncovering an early Timucuan settlement; feature The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island’s exciting new Chef Theaters, in which its outstanding chefs from Salt share their know-how as they cook with their guests; present another of Fernandina Beach’s “Great Homes and Churches” on the distinctive Waas House; share an “Island Entertaining” with Karen Miller on creating some delicious soups to fortify yourself for cooler weather; and much more. he Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival began its 21st season last month on December 3 with a Big Band Holiday performance featuring The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and guest vocalist Alita Moses. The season continues this month with world-renowned soprano, Renée Fleming, followed by a line-up of internationally and nationally acclaimed musical stars, all scheduled to perform at various Amelia Island venues. The conclusion of this year’s Festival is highlighted by the return of the celebrated Zukerman Trio. “This year’s Festival promises to be one of our most exciting, with an exceptional list of world-renowned artists that appeal to a variety of musical tastes and experiences,” says Christopher Rex, the Festival’s general and artistic director. “In addition to some of the most celebrated chamber music talent, we are delighted to showcase a variety of performances, including American soprano Renée Fleming, Tango Argentina, The Gibson Brothers, members of The Polish Wieniawski Philharmonic, the Danish String Quartet, and our very own quartet-in-residence, the Dover Quartet.” The Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival was founded in 2001 by Christopher Rex, a vacationer on Amelia Island and 11 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
principal cellist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and a group of Fernandina Beach women, who loved chamber music. The first season was launched with a budget of only $50,000, raised by a group of generous donors and a corporate sponsorship of $30,000 from First National Bank, now First Federal Bank. Friends also donated housing for the artists, and some artists even donated their services to help get the Festival established. Now in its 21st season, the Festival has developed into one of the most prestigious events of its kind in the nation. Grants from the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, Community Foundation for Northeast Florida, National Endowment for the Arts, Florida Public Utilities, First Federal Bank, and Rayonier Advanced Materials Foundation, as well as generous corporate contributions from several local businesses, help support the Festival. However, individual contributions and ticket sales account for the majority of their funding. In addition, the Festival continues to be a volunteer-driven Festival. An executive director and office manager are their only professional staff. Festival board president Emma Mills Bledsoe noted that performances often sell out and she encourages music lovers

SOPRANO RENEE FLEMING AT FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH On January 14 at First Baptist Church, the first concert of this year features American superstar soprano, Renée Fleming. Fleming is recognized worldwide for her performances in opera, recordings, theater, film, recitals, orchestral appearances, and at major public occasions. She is the first opera singer to perform the Star-Spangled Banner at a Super Bowl and is a recipient of the National Medal of Arts. Fleming has been nominated for 17 Grammy Awards and has won four times. 12 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
In addition to her concert, Fleming will host Music & The Mind, on January 13 at Courtyard/Springhill Suites. This complimentary event (reservations required) is an intriguing presentation and panel discussion about the intersection of music, health, and neuroscience. Ms. Fleming will be joined by Dr. Regis Haid, president of the National Association of Neurological Surgeons; former Emory School of Medicine Pediatric Neurologist Dr. Nicolas Krawiecki; renowned interventional neuroradiologist Dr. Ajay Wakhloo; and Olivia Hoblit, founder of the Trinity Love Hoblit Foundation.
POLISH WIENIAWSKI PHILHARMONIC AT FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH On January 22 at First Baptist Church, the Festival welcomes the Polish Wieniawski Philharmonic. Founded in 1942 in the throes of World War II, the Polish Wieniawski Philharmonic gave the first symphony concert in postwar Poland and has since become the largest music institution in eastern Poland. Embarking on a North American tour in 2022,

“BEER & G-STRINGS” PERFORMANCE AT SADLER RANCH On January 30 at Sadler Ranch, the Festival is hosting its beloved “Beer & G-Strings” performance, Musical Fireworks. This astounding celebration of exciting, virtuosic, and inspiring chamber music features members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Georgian Chamber Players, Atlanta Chamber Players, Emory School of Music, Vega String Quartet, and Christiania Trio. Enjoy works by a wide variety of popular composers, including Dvorak, Mozart, Vivaldi, Smetana, Piazzolla, and Manuel de Falla. THE LEGEND OF PEER GYNT AT THE PECK CENTER AUDITORIUM The Festival’s Young Patrons present an afternoon of music, dance, and art on February 5 at the Peck Center Auditorium, presenting “The Legend of Peer Gynt – A Concert for All Ages.” Edvard Grieg’s most popular work was composed for Henrik Ibsen’s Norwegian allegorical play in 1875. Today, it is considered to be one of the best examples of beautiful melodic “picture painting.” Children of all ages will especially enjoy two of its best-known movements: “Morning” and “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” as dancers from Susan Dodge’s Amelia Island Dance Festival and artists from Lauren Templeton’s Amelia Art Studio interpret the music live on stage. Students from the Amelia Art Studio will also create artwork inspired by Grieg’s music. Their work will be on exhibit at the concert. Local actor Frank O’Donnell narrates the story. A trio of musicians including Christopher Rex, cello; Elizabeth Pridgen, piano; and violinist Helen Hwaya Kim provide the inspiration for the dancers and artists.

THE DOVER QUARTET AT NASSAU COUNTY COURTHOUSE On February 13 at the Historic Nassau County Courthouse, the Dover Quartet, the Festival’s quartet-in-residence, presents a concert of music by Haydn, Mozart, and Ravel. The Dover is one of the most in-demand ensembles in the world, and the first-ever quartet-in-residence for the Kennedy Center. They are the recipient of the coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant and are also quartet-in-residence for the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University, Chamber Music Northwest, Artosphere, and Peoples’ Symphony in New York. The quartet’s distinctive sound has helped confirm its status as “the young American string quartet of the moment” since they catapulted to international stardom in 2013.
TANGO ARGENTINA AT THE RITZ-CARLTON, AMELIA ISLAND On March 8 at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, prepare to be wowed by Tango Argentina, comprised of 12 of Argentina’s greatest tango dancers and musicians. Marcos Ayala, artistic director and choreographer, has created an extraordinary and thrilling program for Tango Argentina’s inaugural tour of the United States. Dancers Ivana Ayala and Pedro Sanchiz create a perfect dance couple, with synchronous movements of great interpretive technique. On April 10 at The Amelia Plantation Chapel, the Dover Quartet performs with Roberto Díaz, Elissa Lee Koljonen, and Christopher Rex, with a program of music by Arensky and Tchaikovsky. From 1996 to 2006, violist Roberto Díaz, held the position of principal violist of the Philadelphia Orchestra and has been principal viola of the National Symphony under Mstislav Rostropovich, a member of the Boston Symphony under Seiji Ozawa, and a member of the Minnesota Orchestra under Neville Marriner. Recognized as one of the most celebrated violinists of her generation, Elissa Lee Koljonen has thrilled audiences and critics in over 100 cities throughout the world. Koljonen initially received international acclaim when she became the first recipient of the prestigious Henryk Szeryng Foundation Award and silver medalist of the Carl Flesch International Violin Competition. Christopher Rex is the founder and artistic and general director of the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival. He retired as principal cellist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) in 2018 after serving in that position for 39 years. During his tenure with the ASO, he was the first cellist ever to win the string prize in the biennial Young Artists Competition of the National Federation of Music Clubs. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music with Orlando Cole and at the Juilliard School with Leonard Rose. He was a

THE GIBSON BROTHERS AT THE PECK CENTER AUDITORIUM The Festival welcomes the Gibson Brothers on April 16 at The Peck Center Auditorium. The Gibson Brothers, Leigh and Eric, are considered bluegrass legends, and they debuted on the Grand Ole Opry stage in 2003. “Ring the Bell” (written by Chet O’Keefe) won Song of the Year and Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year in 2010. Their first tour abroad was to Ireland and Germany in 2010. In 2012, they returned to Germany with stops in Denmark, France, and Italy. The brothers debuted on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion in 2014, at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota, and returned in January 2015.

The Top Hospital designation is bestowed by The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers recognized as the toughest standard-setters for health care safety and quality. “Quality and safety are ingrained in our culture. aron Whitehouse and Todd Alexander met in Atlanta, Georgia, where they had both been working in an underground network of artists. As avid surfers, however, they dreamed of the beach, and Amelia Island drew them out of the big city. In December 2020, the two friends opened The Atlantic Contemporary at 1014 Atlantic Avenue with a mission to bring beauty into the world, one piece at a time. “We wanted to provide a welcoming place for people to enjoy, experience, and collect fine art,” says Whitehouse. “Our goal is to help people in the community design living spaces that are representative of the life and style they aspire to live.” “The Atlantic Contemporary provides a new and different way to experience art,” states Alexander. “By offering quarterly events and private showings, we are able to make genuine connections to our community and our artists.” Alexander and Whitehouse are artists first and foremost, with over two decades honing their craft. Their experiences have brought them connections across the U.S. through
galleries, events, and collaborations. The Atlantic Contemporary features the work of Whitehouse and Alexander, along with artists John Folsom, Lisbeth Krawiecki, and Jarred Bishop. Currently, the two friends are collaborating on a project using old photos of Fernandina Beach in an atmospheric perspective that adds new life to the images. In addition, Alexander uses his love of wildlife, landscapes, and meditation as inspiration. Whitehouse uses driftwood to collaborate with Mother Nature and her higher power, in combination with resin, for a contemporary vision of the ocean and its beauty. They also specialize in other mixed media, including painting and collage. When Whitehouse and Alexander are not creating art, you’ll find them at the beach surfing. TIMUCUAN Voices Located on Big Talbot Island south of Amelia, a University of North Florida archaeology dig makes a discovery that gives voice to the indigenous people of Northeast Florida. BY MANDY HAYNES • PHOTOS BY SHERRY CARTER

r. Keith Ashley, University of North Florida (UNF) Archaeology Lab director and assistant professor, is giving a voice to the indigenous people who lived in Northeast Florida. Through his discoveries, he is telling their story, and he and his team are doing it one shovelful of dirt at a time. In November, Sherry Carter and I met with Dr. Ashley on Big Talbot Island at the site where he and his students have made an incredible discovery. After 23 years of searching for the precise location of the village of Sarabay, Dr. Ashley believes they have found it. The first excavations conducted by UNF on the southern end of Big Talbot Island began in 1998. I listened as Dr. Ashley explained how they came to the decision to look there, and I realized that I was hearing a genuine story about searching for lost treasure. From Spanish documents dated 1565 that 33 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
mention Sarabay, along with correspondence from 1602, a map from 1703, and discoveries of “Indian pottery” in the late 1960s, Keith Ashley, Buzz Thunen, and Vicki Rolland initiated a shovel test survey of the south end of Big Talbot Island. Conducting more than 550 shovel tests over a three-month period, they turned up indigenous San Pedro and San Marcos pottery, along with other clues that warranted a closer look. The three returned with several students to the site they named Armellino, and the UNF field school went to work digging four individual 1-meter by 2-meter units scattered across the area near the site of the original tests. It’s a time-consuming process. Every shovel of dirt is sifted through, studied, and recorded. Everything matters – even the color of the soil beneath the surface tells a tale. last unit had a lot to say and continued to reveal its treasures through the next summer’s excavation in 1999. What began as a shovel test with a small soil discoloration became a large excavation block. An impressive collection of artifacts and features were found, but the most exciting find proved to be a section of a wall trench structure, with an area within the section thought to represent an entranceway to a wood and thatch building. Covid made things a little harder in 2020 for the students of the field school, but they worked around the obstacles by wearing masks and practicing social distance. A lot of interesting artifacts were found, which continue to help them understand the true history and culture of northeastern Florida’s indigenous population. This year, they were back again, making more discoveries. Dr. Ashley and the students were able to uncover more of the wall trench structure and unearthed some exciting news. The size of the structure is similar to that of a Council House, which could mean that Dr. Ashley has found the center of Sarabay. The team hopes to ultimately confirm the

discovery of Sarabay by finding evidence of houses and public architectures. They will continue to explore and learn about Sarabay’s physical layout during continuing fieldwork projects over the next two years. Dr. Ashley’s excitement about the project and his love of teaching made me want to know more, and he invited Sherry and me to come to UNF for an exhibit of the items found at the site. Not only was I able to see the treasures up close, but I was also able to hold several pieces in my hand, and I got to meet some of the students who participated in the dig over the summer. They are as excited about learning the history of the indigenous people of Northeast Florida as their professor is. Dr. Ashley’s finds are an important development because the true story of the Timucuan-speaking Mocama Indians, not vague European descriptions, needs to be heard. JANUARY 22 Polish Wieniawski Philharmonic Founded in 1942 in the throes of WWII, The Polish Wieniawski Philharmonic gave the first symphony concert in postwar Poland and has since become the largest music institution in eastern Poland. The orchestra is joined by violinist Sara Dragan, the first prize winner of the Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition and Tomasz Ritter, piano soloist, who in 2018 became the first prize winner of the First International Chopin Competition on Period Instruments in Warsaw. A
n invitation to participate in one of The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island’s Cooking Theaters was an offer I could not refuse. Salt, The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island’s AAA Five-Diamond restaurant, has launched a monthly series of cooking experiences. The concept originated with General Manager Greg Cook, who wanted to highlight the resort’s talented team of chefs. In the past, cooking classes offered at the resort started in the kitchen, where attendees worked side-by-side with the chefs and later sat down to a meal of the delicious creations they had helped prepared. In the new format, guests are invited to gather around the Demonstration Table, overlooking the dunes and the ocean, for an intimate conversation about the dishes, preparation, cooking tips, techniques, and the chef ’s background and training. After each demonstration, the guests dine on the course with a paired wine. The third course and demonstration is a seasonal dessert dish. Guests are provided with the day’s recipes and list of wines served. Chefs Okan Kizilbayir and Heidi Kabath treated us to an amazing experience over our three hours with them. Chef
Kizilbayir’s appointment as Chef de Cuisine at Salt at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island started at a job fair in Turkey. His sponsor, Eric Ripert, was opening a bistro restaurant in Washington, D.C. It was the beginning of a 14-year mentorship. Kizilbayir’s last stop was at Ripert’s Michelin 3-Star restaurant Le Bernardin in New York City. Heidi Kabath is a prize-winning pastry chef. She completed a four-year pastry program, earning her bachelor’s degree in 2006. She has served at several Ritz-Carlton properties, including Tyson’s Corner, Key Biscayne, Naples, and Charlotte. She has participated in two regional and one national pastry competitions with the Chaine de Rotisseurs, winning the MidAtlantic Pastry Chef award in 2017 and 2018. We were greeted and invited to step outside for a champagne toast. Robert Ardinger, Salt General Manager, slid a specially designed saber along the seam of a champagne bottle and with the blunt side of a saber hit the lip of the bottle, opening it dramatically. The ceremony, which is used for special occasions, became popular in France in the time of Napoleon, who once continued on next page

said, “I drink champagne when I win, to celebrate... and I drink champagne when I lose, to console myself.” Between our three courses, we were invited to gather around the table, where we learned many new skills and tips. Chef Kizilbayir started the morning by demonstrating the proper way to prepare a duck. As the duck legs and breast simmered, he prepared a yellowtailed snapper to be used later for the main course. Our group really enjoyed our interaction with the talented chef. After our course of French Duck Rillettes and assorted appetizers, served with a glass of Pinot Noir, we again joined the chef to watch as he prepared the salted pastry to encase the snapper featured in the next course. Back at our table, we tasted the SaltCrusted Snapper, which was served with a heavenly Chickpea and Mushroom Stew. The chef treated us to thin slices of white truffle. We agreed the truffles were beyond delicious and merit all the special attention they receive! We returned to the preparation table and joined pastry Chef Heidi Kabath as she prepared our last course: Apple Tart Tatin with Cranberry Orange Caramel Sauce and Mascarpone Creme. She showed us lots of tips on preparing the delicious layered dessert. Combining generous amounts of butter and sugar in two different caramel mixtures were key ingredients in her dessert creations. Yes, it was as good as it sounds! Future monthly Chef Theater events include a Sushi Valentine’s Day with Chef Tandy, Latino Comfort food with Chef Arnaldo “Papi,” and Mother’s and Father’s Day special classes. T
his large house is actually two houses in one. The original house was modest and faced Date Street. It was built prior to the Civil War in the late 1850’s by the Hedges family. It has been described as Carpenter Gothic. It went through several owners, including St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, prior to its purchase by Dr. William T. Waas. The doctor and his wife added many typical Victorian details when they enlarged the house. In the renovation, the original house was engulfed by a newer structure, which included a circular tower and its distinctive spacious and inviting porches all around. A Gothic-inspired palladium window was added, capped by an arched window. The house nearly doubled in size and its new orientation opened to Seventh Street rather than Date Street. The Waas family was very popular in the community, and Dr. Waas wanted to build a house that would allow for frequent entertaining. Like others on fashionable Seventh Street, they competed to make their house more spectacular than their neighbors. Christmas was a special holiday for Dr. Waas and his family. He loved to dress as Santa Claus, and he would pick
up his guests in a wagon drawn by horses. He brought them to his grand home, which would be all lit up with holiday candles. Dr. Waas was born and raised in Fernandina; the son of John and Regina Waas. After studying at the East Florida Seminary in Gainesville, Dr. Waas graduated from the Tulane Medical School and returned to Fernandina, where he partnered with Dr. J. D. Palmer. When Palmer died at a relatively young age, Waas bought the Palmer Pharmacy, which eventually became the Waas Pharmacy. A Waas Pharmacy remains on Amelia Island. In that era, it was not unusual for a doctor to operate a medical practice from home. The extensive expansion of the original house allowed for Dr. Waas to be close to family and still operate his busy medical practice. Like so many gentlemen of his time, Waas held positions with the City of Fernandina and Nassau County. He was Mayor of Fernandina from 1899 until 1908. There are many amusing stories about Dr. Waas. For instance, Dr. Waas owned one of only two automobiles on the entire island, and he managed to get into an accident with the owner of the other car, Flossie Borden.

eye-catching gems As winter settles in this month, get your beds ready for new additions in the spring and dream of eye-catching beauties that will add interest to your landscape next summer. BY BETTY MORRELL

Happy and Healthy New Year to you! I hope this new year brings you lots of gardening pleasures, with new and old garden treasures. Southern Living is ringing in the New Year with a gorgeous Vitex called Summertime Blues. This shrub is also known as a Chaste Tree. Summertime Blues has large, lavender/purple flowers on dark stems, which bloom from summer into fall. Its rounded growth habit lends itself to being a tree, 5 to 6 feet high and 4 to 5feet wide, or pruned into a manageable, dense shrub. Summertime Blues likes full sun and attracts birds and butterflies. It is eye-catching in any size. Although drought-tolerant, this plant needs water until it is well-established, then only occasionally, but more if planted in containers or in extreme heat. Prune it in winter to your desired size and shape as that is its resting time. Use it in containers, as an accent plant, a hedge, in mass plantings, or for privacy. No matter how you use it, Summertime Blue will stand out.
TIP O OF F T HE M O N T H If you can’t find these plants at your local nursery, you can always try Etsy. They have a large range of suppliers for these plants. In the meantime, get the beds ready for your new additions.
A few plants introduced in 2021 by Proven Winners have really caught my eye. One of them is the Coffee/ Tea Cup Colocasia plant, which can be started with the purchase of the bulb, rhizome, or actual plant. This unusual, relatively new “show off,” with glossy olive green leaves and dramatic purpleveined undersides, demands a second look. The leaves and stems are so strong and thick that rainwater pools in the cup and when it gets full, the stems bend just enough to pour out the water and let the leaf refill. Amazing and beautiful. Plant this perennial in sun to partshade (probably part-shade with our hot afternoon sun). Coffee Cup will make a dramatic impact on your landscape in just one growing season. It grows 3 to 5

feet in height and width. Proven Winners are available in Lowes and Home Depot. Another Proven Winner (PW) is the Machu Morado Mexican Petunia. You may not want to touch that plant with a 10-foot pole, but let me assure you that this the 2021 introduction does not invade the rest of your landscape. This new one is a thriller with bright purple trumpet-shaped blooms that sway over beautiful lance-shaped leaves, providing lovely color when nights are warm and days are hotter. This continuously blooming annual is heatand drought-tolerant and loves the sun. Machu Morado drops its spent flowers on its own, so pruning isn’t necessary. It attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, so plant it where you can enjoy the visitors. Pair this upright, 18 to 32-inch high and 12 to 18-inch wide plant with other daisy-like flowers in a range of colors for an outstanding display, or display Machu in a container surrounded by cascading plants. eth Partleton, a retired architect who designed industrial and commercial projects, always wanted to build a house. She fell in love with Amelia Island while escaping Wisconsin winters and visiting her sister, Chris, an artist who lives on Amelia Island. After her husband died, she visited more often and felt more and more at home. Plans for building a home were still distant, but on one visit she found Crane Island and knew that this was where she wanted to build her house. Crane Island is a gated community situated on the Intracoastal Waterway in a maritime forest of ancient oaks, magnolias, and cedar trees. The developers of Crane Island focused on a Lowcountry look reminiscent of southeast coastal communities. Drawing on the rich architectural history of its home island, Crane Island celebrates Lowcountry with a “Fernandina Twist.”

Beth and Chris share an abundance of artistic talents, including painting and a variety of crafting projects. The sisters are close and embraced the building of one of the first houses on Crane Island with great enthusiasm. Beth compiled an idea book, detailing things that she wanted in her new home. The book was a useful tool to allow better communication with the construction team and it allowed everyone to offer their creative solutions. Eventually, Beth chose Moser Design Group in Beaufort, South Carolina. Their Lowcountry designs were just what she was looking for. The group has designed other houses in the Crane Island development, as well as an award-winning home
in Old Town. Beth was anxious to use tropical colors on her house and selected Festoon Aqua from the Sherwin Williams Historical Collection of colors. Her builder was Cam Bradford Homes out of Winter, Park, Florida. The design of the house incorporates a generous outside living area with a large fire pit and an abundance of places to gather and sit. The master bedroom has a cozy mini porch that spills out into the larger courtyard. The porches and courtyard provide the outdoor space she wanted and eliminated the need for a lawn. Her landscape plan includes a variety of plants offering color throughout the year. A sunny area behind the house is planted with fruit trees.

Upon entering the house, one has the option to enter the main living area or continue back to the master bedroom and guest suite area. The main living area has a kitchen at one end of a generously sized room. Above the quartz island are unusual sculptured seeded glass light fixtures. Subtle patterned subway tiling complements the kitchen design. The decor features original artwork and the bright colors Beth prefers. Throughout the house are objects and

pieces of art that are special and have stories to tell. One corner of the living room has a graceful sparkling, longlegged horse by artist Mindy Colton, a favorite piece bought at a gallery in St. Augustine. Hanging above are colorful glass jellyfish by James Stanford, another St. Augustine artist. A hand-painted chair is sure to catch one’s eye. It has a Matisse-esque lady playing guitar, a gift from sister Chris recognizing Beth’s love of playing guitar.

A stunning dining table is custom made by G & H Reclaim in Callahan. Beth was thrilled to find Shari and Buddy Higgenbothom’s unique shop with all kinds of recycled woods, including old barn wood and even bowling alley lanes. She also used a piece of magnolia wood for the mantle over her fireplace. The master bedroom is painted in soft shades of aqua. A striking painting of a mermaid hanging above the king-size bed was painted by Chris. The master bath features a large sculptured soaking tub with an antique chandelier and a bold piece of artwork on the wall. The main floor guest suite is painted soft shades of aqua features a favorite collected piece of art. Hanging over the bed is a sparkling barracuda by Kyle Zubatsky, a Bluffton, North Carolina artist. Colors in the room are soothing shades of aqua, with accent chairs in darker blues. The second floor offers a traditional guest room and a room that doubles as a guest room and a gathering room, which Beth
calls the Sunset Room. Cleverly using day beds as sofas, it offers a welcoming place to gather for cocktails at the end of the day. Each of the second-floor rooms opens onto a wide second-story porch looking over the courtyard and beyond to a forest of live oaks and the Intracoastal Waterway beyond. Her bonus room is another stair climb away into a tower that houses her craft/sewing room. “I love all the windows and the feeling of being in the treetops,” shares Beth. “From the tower, I can see sunsets over the Intracoastal Waterway and the eagles in their nearby nest.” Her Crane Island home is the realization of the house Beth always hoped to build. She enthuses about the art she has collected from Amelia Island artists such as Karen Bowden, Rebecca McDannold, Carol Winner, Barbara Peeples, Billy McCray, and Gwen Cowart. They add the perfect local touch to her Crane Island home, a home base for Beth as she continues to settle in on Amelia Island, the place she has grown to love.

liders Seaside Grill has been a steadfast landmark and prominent beachside meeting place in Fernandina Beach since its beginning as a traditional American “roadhouse” in 1945. As Fernandina grew, it became less a wayside inn with rooms and food for weary A1A travelers and more a central spot for lunch, drinks, dinner, and dancing that we enjoy now. Named Sliders since 1980, polished to a Caribbean gleam in 2003, and expanded with a second floor and banquet space
in 2011, Sliders is serving its fifth generation of visitors. Visitors and residents alike enjoy all the hospitality Sliders offers today: breakfast on the upstairs porch, lunch and dinner inside or out, a lively bar with signature cocktails, swings and sand for children, banquet space, and live music and events. Not to mention a nice swimming hole just to the east! On a recent visit, my friend Karen Miller joined me for appetizers and lunch as people streamed in for those beachy outside seats. Our server Harlie got us started with a Sliders Slammer, just right to get the Caribbean feeling going, and Sliders’ Fried Pickles, which have been a favorite in my family 64 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
for decades! The six Small Plates options include two kinds of Atlantic shrimp, sea scallops, ahi tuna, chicken, and a Lump Blue Crab Cake with house Remoulade, of which Sliders is very proud. It’s a wonderful way to relax with drinks and music. Sliders creative manager Cason brought us Baked Lobster & Crab Dip, a favorite of Sliders’ regulars, and it was a rich blend of meaty, creamy, salty, and crisp. Oyster-lovers that we are, we tried all three of the baked options: Jalapeño-Lime, Rockefeller, and Parmesan and Bacon. Karen loved the Parmesan and Bacon and I enjoyed the others, with their flavors balancing each other so well. For entrees, Cason recommended two new fish entrées. With a special crab cake on top, the Crab Topped Flounder, with Andouille sausage peeking out of potato hash with peppers and onions and served with a Bourbon cream sauce and a side of black pepper aioli, was delicious. The crispy, slightly sweet crust of the Plantain Crusted Flounder was just right with its hotsweet Pineapple-Jalapeño relish, served over Cuban black beans and rice with a side of citrus aioli. Shrimp & Grits is another popular entrée, along with Seared Salmon, Creole Dinner, and a Low Country Boil. Meat-lovers in the crowd can rejoice with Sliders’ 12-ounce ribeye. Purists may prefer the generous seafood platters, or lunch baskets served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with house coleslaw and especially good hush puppies. Smoked Gouda Mac & Cheese is a tasty twist on that childhood favorite. Three generations of my family have special memories of the pineapple casserole that has been on the menu for decades. Like our family, visitors and locals have their own memories of Sliders through the years. Slide on by for drinks and live music, dessert by the beach, a large outdoor venue, steak and seafood, or just for old time’s sake. Open every day at 11 a.m. on South Fletcher Avenue, Sliders is that place that changes some but not too much, and always welcomes you back like an old friend.

ISLAND ENTERTAINING POTATO LEEK SOUP Ingredients 2 lbs. potatoes, peeled and cubed 4 leeks, cleaned and sliced, white and light green parts only 1/4 cup olive oil Pinch of nutmeg 1/2 cup dry white wine 6 or 7 cups chicken or vegetable stock 3/4 cup heavy cream 8 oz. sour cream 1 cup chopped flat leaf parsley Salt and pepper to taste Preparation Sauté leeks in olive oil until tender. Add a pinch of nutmeg and white wine, then simmer for one minute. Add potatoes and enough stock to cover, then bring to a low simmer and cook until potatoes are tender. Use an immersion blender to puree potato and leek mixture. Add heavy cream, sour cream, parsley, and salt and pepper to taste. If the soup is too thick, add more stock and reheat gently, do not boil. Serves 6-8.

inter in Florida is temperate compared to the rest of the country, but we still have a few frosty days, making it a great time to get out your soup or stock pot and simmer your chills away! Soup recipes can range from simple and inexpensive to complex and elegant. For instance, Potato Leek Soup costs only about $10 for an entire pot that serves 8, but Seafood Gumbo may cost up to $80 to make. In any case, good soup is worthy of serving at any dinner party, along with salad, fine wine, and a crusty baguette. At our house, we like to make a large pot of our favorite soup and
freeze leftovers for the next cold snap. Some soups don’t freeze well, however, especially soups that include noodles or pasta, such as Minestrone. I suggest cooking the pasta separately, placing it in each soup bowl, and ladling the Minestrone over the top. Add some grated Parmesan cheese and a piece of garlic bread, and you’ve got a hearty, heartfelt meal to serve your loved ones. The key to successful soup-making? Fresh ingredients, of course! Base your choices on what’s in season, and what looks good at the grocery store or farmer’s market. Here are a few of my favorite winter soup recipes.

MINESTRONE SOUP Ingredients 3 tbs. olive oil 2 carrots, finely diced 2 small zucchini, finely diced 1 onion, finely chopped 3 ribs celery, finely diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 28 oz. canned diced tomatoes 1 quart vegetable stock plus extra to thin out soup 15 oz. canned white beans, drained 15 oz. canned kidney beans, drained 1 tbs. Italian seasoning Salt and pepper 1/2 cup each fresh basil and parsley, chopped Cooked small pasta of your choice Grated Parmesan cheese Preparation Cook carrots, zucchini, onions, celery, and garlic in olive oil until vegetables become soft. Add tomatoes, broth, beans, and Italian seasoning and simmer for 10-15 minutes, adding more broth if mixture is too thick. Add salt and pepper to taste. Stir in basil and parsley.
