celebration of literacy.
This month, the Amelia Island Book Festival (AIBF) hosts its 18th annual program, and in the last few years, they have really hit their stride, putting together some spectacular literary events here on Amelia Island. The festival’s community-centered vision has always been to open up the world for people of all ages through the promotion and celebration of literacy. In order to accomplish this mission, the festival has brought in a number of well-known authors, who have spoken and passed out books in Nassau County schools, and the AIBF has introduced a number of fun events that bring authors to the community as a whole. These new events have quickly become some of the most popular happenings on the festival schedule. The Kick-Off Luncheon at Walkers Landing opens the week, and this exciting event this year features a conversation with best-selling authors John Grisham and David Baldacci. The Tweens & Teens Scene, offered in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Nassau County, is a huge hit with younger readers (and parents!) and features six favorite teen authors, who speak to the kids about their writing journeys. And the Face-Off Gala at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island brings together New York Times best-selling authors Kristen Ashley, Diana Gabaldon, Tess Gerritsen, and Ridley Pearson, with moderator Steve Berry. The gala includes a gourmet dinner and an auction conducted by Amelia Island’s own State Senator Aaron Bean. All of these fun events raise money, in addition to the festival’s generous sponsors, to place an author in every classroom in Nassau County and a new book in every child’s hand – 12,000 books in all this year. It’s an enormous achievement, and one for which we should be very grateful. Thanks for the success of the festival goes to the AIBF’s hard-working board and the efforts of Honorary Chairperson Steve Berry of St. Marys, Ga. Berry, whose popular historical novels consistently grace the New York Times bestsellers list, not only brings many of his fellow authors to the festival, but he and his wife, Elizabeth, have used their experience with book festivals around the country to help create the fun events that bring authors and books to Nassau County for young and old alike. The festival’s week-long celebration of reading splendidly fulfills its stated mission to promote a lifetime of learning. Also this month, we preview the upcoming Trinity Hoblit Foundation Gala at The RitzCarlton, Amelia Island, which supports neurological research for brain aneurysms, strokes, and other cerebrovascular conditions; take a peek at the creatively redecorated workplace of toymaker Mike Bowling; look at another of Dickie Anderson’s Great Homes of Fernandina; present some great chocolate recipes for Valentine’s Day; and much, much more.

teve Berry is a champion for literacy and history. With over 18 bestselling historical fiction thrillers under his belt, and a new novel coming out in March, Berry is at the height of his career. But it wasn’t always like that for the aspiring writer. It took 12 years and 85 rejection before he sold his first book, The Amber Room, to Ballantine Books in 2002. The book was published in 2003, and that’s when Berry came to his first Amelia Island book festival, which was then called the “Amelia Book Island Festival.” The festival had its ups and downs over the years, until past president Marie Rizzo Fenn called Berry four years ago and asked him to be their honorary chairperson. “My wife, Elizabeth, and I had a lot of experience with book festivals. She organizes Thrillerfest, as the executive director of International Thriller Writers,” says Berry. “My job was to recruit folks I knew to come to Amelia Island. We brought in renowned authors, and then worked with
the board to put things into place that would insure a successful festival.” This year, the Amelia Island Book Festival is bringing more than 100 noted and celebrity New York Times bestselling authors to Fernandina Beach, including John Grisham, Diana Gabaldon, Kristen Ashley, David Baldacci, Tess Gerritsen, and Ridley Pearson, along with Berry, all to support the festival’s award-winning Authors in Schools Literacy Program. Fenn is excited about the success of the Festival, and its contribution to literacy. “This year we’ve purchased 12,000 books for students in Nassau County,” says Fenn. “And so much of our triumph is due to authors like Steve Berry, who donate their time and waive their speaking fees. These authors inspire students and adults to read, write, and share their passion with others.” Another important part of the annual AIBF is the presentation of a $2,000 scholarship to a college-bound Nassau County student. The scholarship is dedicated to the

late Christa Powell Walley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Powell of Fernandina Beach. The AIBF also offers a short story contest for Nassau County middle and high school students in grades 6 - 12. But their main focus is Authors in Schools, through which the organization purchases a book for every student in Nassau County to read before the author comes to their class. “What better way to promote literacy than to put a book into the hands of a child,” says Berry. “But to do that, we have to raise a lot of money. And, with the success of the Kick-Off Luncheon and the Author Face-Off Gala, plus our many sponsors, the festival is able to buy more books every year.”
KICK-OFF LUNCHEON WITH JOHN GRISHAM AND DAVID BALDACCI The Amelia Island Book Festival begins on Thursday, February 14 with its wildly popular Kick-Off Luncheon at Walkers Landing, featuring a conversation with New York Times bestselling authors John Grisham and David Baldacci. The event is sold out, and has been for several months. “We are so lucky to have these fine authors at the luncheon, along with Steve Berry as our master of ceremonies,” says Fenn. “Our presenting sponsor is the Law Offices of John M. Phillips, and proceeds from this event benefit our Authors in Schools Literacy Program.”
JOHN GRISHAM has written one collection of short stories, one work of non-fiction, three books about sports, one comic novel, six editions of his Theodore Boone series for children, a childhood memoir, and, at last count, more than twenty legal thrillers. Nine of his books have been adapted to film. His 40th novel, The Reckoning, was released in October 2018. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Innocence Project in New York and the Focused Ultrasound Foundation in Charlottesville, Virginia. DAVID BALDACCI has published 36 novels for adults. All have been national and international bestsellers, and several have been adapted for film and television. His novels are published in over 45 languages and in more than 80 countries, with over 130 million worldwide sales. He has also published six novels for younger readers. David is also the cofounder, along with his wife, Michelle, of the Wish You Well Foundation®, which is dedicated to supporting literacy efforts across the United States. David and his family live in Virginia. 14 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

TWEENS & TEENS SCENE AT ST. PETER EPISCOPAL CHURCH
WRITERS WORKSHOPS AT FSCJ NASSAU IN YULEE
Also on February 14, tweens and teens will be wowed by six of their favorite authors at the Tweens & Teens Scene, held at St. Peter Episcopal Church at 5 p.m. Offered in partnership with the Boy & Girls Clubs of Nassau County, noted authors Michael Regina, John Hope, Gary Zeiger, Yvonne Ventresca, Janet McLaughlin, and Stacey Horan will meet with youths from 10 to 17 years old to talk about their writing journey. This event is free, but tweens and teens need to register online in advance. Refreshments, pizza, and beverages will be served, and an array of raffle prizes, including gift certificates and books galore from the authors, will be available.
Have you always wanted to write but didn’t know where to start? Perhaps you’ve started, but are stuck. Maybe you have a manuscript written, but are bewildered by the publishing options available. Or you love to write, but don’t have a clue about marketing. If you answered yes to any of the above, two Writers Workshops are being offered on February 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the FSCJ Nassau Campus in Yulee. Participants can choose from two tracks, Publishing 101 or The Craft of Writing, or you can mix and match the sessions you wish to attend that best meet your needs. The workshops include a box lunch and presentation by Keynote Speaker Steve Berry.
Trained as a medical doctor, TESS GERRITSEN built a second career as a thriller writer. Her 27 novels include the Rizzoli and Isles crime series, on which the TV show “Rizzoli & Isles” is based. Among her titles are Harvest, Gravity, The Surgeon, Playing with Fire, and I Know A Secret. Her books are translated into 40 languages, and more than 30 million copies have been sold. She lives in Maine. 16 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

RCN has a variety of programs to promote a strong female community and has given over $125,000 to women’s charities. “Nosh” begins at 11 a.m., featuring selfies with the Rock Chick herself, followed by lunch and a presentation by Ashley. All participants will receive a swag bag containing gifts and books donated by 1001 Dark Nights, a collection of magically romantic novellas. After lunch, Ashley will hold a question-and-answer segment and book signing.
Also on February 15, 27 authors visit students all over Nassau County to talk about their books during the Festival’s Authors in Schools Literacy Program. Authors include Diana Gabaldon, John Grisham, Ridley Pearson, and many others. “The teachers and schools choose the books they want their students to read, and we give each child a book,” says Fenn. “Then when the author shows up at the schools, the students have prepared questions for the authors, and the interaction is really amazing. “The kids love these books, and it’s so exciting to meet their favorite authors in such an approachable way. This program is really what our Festival is all about—it’s an incredible effort for literacy, and we love seeing the community coming together to support our students.”
KRISTEN ASHLEY grew up in Indiana, has lived in Colorado and the West Country of England, but now she calls the Valley of the Sun home. Thus, she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least), but loopy is good when you want to write. Kristen has published over 60 romance novels. Her work has been translated into 13 different languages. She’s sold nearly three million books and has won or been nominated for numerous awards. DIANA GABALDON is the author of the award-winning #1 New York Times-bestselling Outlander novels, described by Salon magazine as “the smartest historical sci-fi adventure-romance story ever written by a science Ph.D. with a background in scripting ‘Scrooge McDuck’ comics.” The adventure began in 1991 with the classic Outlander (“historical fiction with a Moebius twist”) and has continued through seven more New York Times-bestselling novels. 18 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

FACE-OFF GALA AT THE RITZ-CARLTON, AMELIA ISLAND Friday evening features the Festival’s biggest event, the Face-Off Gala, held at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, with New York Times bestselling authors Kristen Ashley, Diana Gabaldon, Tess Gerritsen, and Ridley Pearson. The Face-Off, which will be moderated by Steve Berry, includes an auction conducted by Florida Senator Aaron Bean with the chance to live forever in an upcoming Diana Gabaldon book, among other unique gifts and prizes. A gourmet dinner will be served, and the authors’ books will be available for purchase and signing at the end of the evening.
EXPO SUNDAY AT FERNANDINA BEACH MIDDLE SCHOOL Expo Saturday will be held on February 16 at the Fernandina Beach Middle School featuring over 100 authors and their books for sale in the Festival’s Marketplace, with breakout sessions for personal time with the authors. “These breakout sessions are free,
but they’re ticketed,” says Fenn. “There’s also a special session for local authors, and it gives them an opportunity to sell, sign, and showcase their books, and talk about their passion for writing. The day is filled with food, entertainment, and activities, and open to the public at no charge.” It was 18 years ago that the late Don Parker and his wife, Andrea, along with Joe and Joani Selement, had the idea to combine the lure of books with Amelia Island’s spectacular location. As the idea caught on, they gathered supporters and founded a non-profit organization to launch the first festival in 2001. “Leveraging partnerships and community support through fundraising events, the festival is able to deliver on its promise to promote and celebrate literacy through books,” says Fenn. “The success of the AIBF continues to connect students, authors, and books for lifelong learning.” For more information and tickets to festival events, visit www. ameliaislandbookfestival.org.

AMELIA ISLAND CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE FOUNDER BILL WARNER WINS 2018 NICOLA BULGARI AWARD
DEREMER STUDIOS
Bill Warner, founder and chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, was recently awarded the 2018 Nicola Bulgari Award at a gala hosted by The LeMay Museum in Tacoma, Washington. The Nicola Bulgari Award is presented annually based upon the winner’s contributions to preserving America’s automotive heritage, the use of vintage vehicles, and striving to ensure the future of the collector car hobby. “To be recognized and rewarded for the passions of a lifetime by Nicola, a purist who has given his life to the love of the automobile, is humbling and surprising. No machine comes closer to having a soul than the automobile. I think it’s safe to say that many of us have said with a straight face that they love their car, and I’m one of them,” said Warner. The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is among the top automotive events in the world. “The Amelia” draws more than 300 rare vehicles from collections around the world to The Golf Club of Amelia Island and The RitzCarlton, Amelia Island for a celebration of the automobile like no other. The 24th annual event is scheduled for March 7-10, 2019. For more information, you can visit www.ameliaconcours.org or call (904) 636-0027.

YOUNG PATRONS SUPPORT AMELIA ISLAND CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL The Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival brings incredible musical talent to Amelia Island each year with artists like Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman performing to sold-out crowds. But some chamber music fans are hoping to attract a larger group of concertgoers under age 50. A group of women including Ktimene Axetell, Jennifer Bauer, Lauren Templeton, and Trang Wiest, all with a diversified portfolio of experience in the arts, decided to establish an AICMF Young Patrons program. All of them share a love of classical music and a vision of sharing that with a younger generation. As mothers, they also understand that a night at a concert can be an economic hurdle for young families with the cost of tickets, dinner, and a babysitter. “For our debut, we created a special package that combined a reception and concert tickets at an introductory rate as a gateway to the rest of the concert season,” the group explains. In January, a sold-out event at Summer House Realty’s rooftop venue ahead of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis concert was a great success. The Young Patrons are planning a series of special encounters and seek volunteers to sustain the momentum. For more information and to get involved, visit www.ameliachambermusic.org/young-patrons.
BAPTIST MEDICAL CENTER NASSAU RECEIVES HIGHEST SAFETY AWARD Amelia Island’s Baptist Medical Center Nassau received an “A” for patient safety, the highest category, in the fall 2018 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades. “Our entire team is committed to the safety of our patients, their families, and each other,” said Ed Hubel, FACHE, hospital president of Baptist Medical Center Nassau. “It is an honor to receive an ‘A’ grade as a testament to their continued dedication.” Only 33 percent of graded hospitals were awarded an “A,” and the roster included Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville and Baptist Medical Center South. The Leapfrog Group, which aims to improve healthcare quality and safety for consumers and purchasers, assigns an A, B, C, D, or F score to hospitals based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections, and other harms among patients in their care. In addition to the Leapfrog grade, the National Research Corporation named Baptist Health the “Most Preferred Healthcare Provider” every year since 1990. “Our healthcare teams are dedicated to collaboration and open communication—two keys to success in achieving the highest quality safety standards in our hospitals,” said David Rice, MD, senior vice president and chief quality officer of Baptist Health. “We emphasize and cultivate a culture of safety every single day.”

hen Donna and Mark Kaufman opened their Story & Song Bookstore Bistro last year, they intended to use their upstairs room as a venue for their monthly “Evening of Story & Song” series. They outfitted the space with acoustic tile, special lighting, sound system and a stage, but as the work progressed, they began to realize the venue’s true potential. “We wanted to highlight all types of art and creativity,” says Mark. “We were inspired by the space itself, and wanted to feature all kinds of art—visual and literary, as well music. We had a great deal of blank wall space so we invited our artist friends to hang their work here.” The Second Story features local artists, and is presenting many new pieces of mixed media, including watercolors, photography, ink and alcohol paintings, sculpture, jewelry, and pottery. “We are so pleased to welcome new and upcoming artists here,” says Donna. “It’s become clear to us that the beautiful art is what has created the ambiance of the Second Story.” Mark and Donna’s latest acquisition is a stunning Steinway baby grand piano, generously donated by one
of their customers. “In addition to the gallery and music, the Second Story has also become a gathering place for luncheons, meetings, and the like,” says Donna. “The artists, musicians, and our customers have defined this venue far beyond what we had imagined.” There are three artist showcases per year, with four or five exhibiting artists; February’s exhibition features The Wilderness of North Florida’s Parks, the art and book of Jacksonville artist Kathy Stark. “The natural world is what defines Amelia Island,” says Donna. “Kathy’s art reflects the beauty of north Florida, with its abundance of parks and natural spaces.” Stark’s book is available for sale, and the artist will be present at the island’s Second Saturday Artrageous Artwalk on February 9 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Story & Song Bookstore Bistro and the Second Story, located at 1430 Park Avenue, is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and open evenings for special events. Elevator access is available. For more information, please call (904) 601-2118 or visit www.storyandsongbookstore.com.

hen the David family moved to Fernandina Beach from Washington state, one of the first things their children did was go to chocolate camp at Peterbrooke Chocolatier. Birthday parties followed, and the whole family fell in love with Peterbrooke. When Katrina and Matt heard the Island Walk location was closing, they knew they could just not let that happen. “We jumped in and became first-time business owners,” laughs Katrina. “We’ve owned the franchise at Island Walk near Publix for almost three years—it turns out that I enjoy making people happy with chocolate!” Katrina and the staff at Peterbrooke sell bags of the signature chocolate-covered popcorn and pretzels, as well as delicious specialty candy, customized chocolate gift baskets, and gelato. Katrina says her family chose Fernandina Beach because of the beach (she loves the sun) and for the schools. “We have five children who keep us busy outside of the chocolate business,” says Katrina. “We really like the sense of community here.” Her husband, Matt, who is a director of software development, helps out with the business when he can, especially during holidays. The Island Walk shop attracts a nice mix of both locals and visitors who can’t help but smile when they open the door and the incredible smell of chocolate hits them. And does Peterbrooke still have chocolate camps? Absolutely, along with all kinds of classes, events and tours—one that even qualifies for a Girl or Boy Scout badge. “We’ll even bring the party to you,” says Katrina. 30 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
ye Envy Optical offers a wide range of optometric services and eye care products. With locations on Amelia Island and Yulee, Eye Envy makes it easy for Nassau county residents to schedule exams and to purchase eyeglasses, contact lenses, and sunglasses. Dr. Tonia Bradley, who came to Fernandina Beach from Kentucky, is an honors graduate of the University of Missouri St. Louis College of Optometry. She is a Board Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Optometry who is passionate about pediatric optometry and complicated contact lens fixes. Dr. Bradley wanted to live somewhere she enjoyed living, so she sold her private practice in Western Kentucky and started looking for just that place. After visiting Eye Envy and Amelia Island, she fell in love. “I bought a house one week later,” she laughs. “I like that I’m on the coast. It’s better to be in a small town on an island than to be in one that’s not.” Dr. Bradley, whose New Year’s resolution is to finish getting her pilot’s license, is founder of the Amelia Island Bourbon Society. She was named one of America’s Top Optometrists in 2014-2016 by the Consumers’ Research Council of America. Michael Sharpe, owner and CEO of Eye Envy Optical’s parent company, says the best thing about the company and the office are the team members. “We have a great staff, and they believe as I do that we should treat every one of our customers and patients as we would our own family members.”

orn in 2001 with primordial dwarfism, Trinity Love Hoblit was also diagnosed in 2009 with multiple brain aneurysms and endured multiple brain surgeries. In 2015, Trinity was scheduled for an open brain surgery for an aneurysm clipping, but two days prior to her preop her aneurysm ruptured. She passed away on June 30, 2015 at age 14. Trinity was an advocate of organ donation, and with her family’s support, she gave life to three donor recipients after her death. Her heart was gifted to a five-year-old boy who had been awaiting a heart for over a year. Her liver was gifted to a six-month-old baby boy, and one of her kidneys was gifted to a 29-year-old woman. These three recipients are alive today as a result of Trinity and her family’s support for organ donation. In 2016, Trinity’s parents, Phil and Olivia Hoblit of Fernandina Beach, honored their daughter’s compassion for others by establishing the Trinity Love Hoblit Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Its purpose is to support and fund neurological research, training, and treatment 35 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

It’s to help save lives, to make a difference. This is something Trinity would want. We are continuing Trinity’s legacy.” On Saturday, April 6, the third annual Trinity Love Hoblit Gala will be held at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia benefiting its goal to support and fund neurological research, training, treatment and awareness for brain aneurysms, strokes and other cerebrovascular conditions. “This year is going to be very special because it’s our third annual gala, and everything comes in ‘threes’ with Trinity,” says Olivia. “We are pleased with what we have achieved in a short amount of time. After two galas and with huge support from our donors and community, our endowment fund stands

If we can meet this milestone, we will have a great shot at being able to fund our mission in perpetuity. Over the next four years, Baptist Health will match 100 percent of all gifts between $25,000 and $1 million and will match by 150 percent any gifts greater than $1 million. If we can raise $8 million, and with the 150 percent match, we should be able to reach the $20 million goal.” The third annual Gala features Jordan Becker with Fiberbuilt Umbrellas as emcee, with Senator Aaron Bean as auctioneer. Entertainment is provided by multi-Grammy Award winner Dave Yaden, with Krystal Joy Brown, Ciara Renée and Charl Brown. Dave Yaden is a singer/songwriter and piano player who has played and written with some of the best up-and-coming artists including One Republic, Tyler Hilton, Lady Antebellum, and Josh Kelley. Krystal Brown is a Broadway theatre and television actress best known for her portrayal of Diana Ross in the Broadway musical Motown. She is a two-time Adele and Fred Astaire nominee for best female dancer in a Broadway show. Ciara Renée is an American actress, singer, and musician best known for her roles on Broadway as the witch in Big Fish, and the leading player in Pippin and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Charl Brown is a Tony Awardnominee theatre actor for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Motown: The Musical. They will be performing musical and dance numbers with other artists in a lively upbeat show directed and choreograph by Susie Dodge, accompanied by a gourmet dinner and live auction. “We have come so far in just three years,” says Phil and Olivia. “We are tremendously grateful and blessed for our board of directors and advisory committee members—our success has been amazing thanks to their involvement, hard work, and passion for our mission. With a little help from friend Brett Carter, Mike Bowling turned his offices at Mike Bowling Enterprises into a place that better reflects his lifelong passion for making toys.
whimsical a
workplace BY JULIE SIMMONS PHOTOS BY SHERRY CARTER
“I
f you think you can or can’t—you’re right! A ship in the harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for. Take risks, and venture out of your comfort zone. If you don’t move beyond where you are today, you will never have more or be more,” said Zoltar from his fortune telling machine to my son, Carter, as we entered the offices of Mike Bowling Enterprises. You might remember Zoltar from the 1988 comedy, “Big”, starring Tom Hanks. Today, Zoltar offers inspiration from his new home on Amelia Island in Mike Bowling’s office. A living example of Zoltar’s message, Mike Bowling is a risk taker who understands that the end result can be extraordinarily greater than anything you might anticipate. Thirty-five years ago, he left his job in a factory and has been creating toys, including the popular Pound Puppies and Splashlings, ever since. Last year, Mike realized that his beige-walled office didn’t reflect who he was or what he does, so he decided to make a change. Brett Carter, an interior designer and risk-taking entrepreneur himself who had partnered with Mike and Charlotte Bowling on a couple of home interiors, was thrilled
when he got the call to make over Mike’s offices. “When I reached out to Brett, I didn’t order orange-and-green wallpaper and multi-colored conference room chairs,” smiles Mike. “I just explained that I wanted to be inspired when I came to work, and that I wanted my office to mirror the persona of our company.” Brett set out to depict the inventiveness of this toymaker in his surroundings. “We aimed for ‘wow’ impact,” explains Brett. “The goal was fun, yet sophisticated, not childish, but something to make you feel childlike. I loved the element of surprise and being able to unveil the finished product for Mike.” And “wow” is what you’ll say as you follow the red puppy paw prints up the sidewalk outside, pass through the curtains suspended with a custom-made broomstick rod inspired by Mike’s favorite movie, “The Wizard of Oz”, and enter the colorful, whimsical, make-you-smile foyer! “I am a shopper and I love to gather ‘things’ from all over,” explains Brett. And that he did, including loads of unique pieces like poodle lamps, antique Halloween baskets, and Zoltar himself to accentuate custom design elements like the rugs and wallpaper.

“The challenge was to keep it functional while still looking cool,” says Brett. Take, for example, the glass conference table filled with gears and tension wire, which turn as you expand the pub table to its full size. Meanwhile, your eyes are lured to the fanciful seats surrounding the table, each colored in a unique hue. Within the whimsical design strategy, beloved memorabilia from Mike’s career is displayed prominently. Centerpiece in the lobby is a pair of Susi Sax’s paintings commissioned by the Bowlings in 1999 to depict Pound Puppies within beloved children’s fairytales. A walk down the hallway becomes a tour of Mike’s career as a toy designer, with newspaper features, an autographed photo of Walt Disney, a handmade marionette Mike acquired in Venice, Italy, as well as lots of imaginative Brett Carter specialties. Mike Bowling Enterprises may also have the best warehouse on Amelia Island, with its red floors, yellow and black jumbo checkerboard, cabinets with boxcar knobs, shelves of Pound Puppies and toys from the portfolio, and my son Carter’s favorite, the “PupCorn Machine.” Yes, it’s a real popcorn machine filled with tiny Pound Puppies for visitors young—and young-atheart—to take as souvenirs. And if you’re looking for a puppy of your own, save the date for the Pound Puppies rerelease this fall! As we prepared to depart, Mike knelt down and looked into Carter’s big brown eyes. “Zoltar is right,” he said. “You can be anything you want to be. I left a factory and became a toymaker with an office that inspires me—and I love to come to work! Maybe you’ll be a toymaker one day, too!”

The Duryee House BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTO BY JAN JOHANNES
T
he Duryee House is the first house built in Fernandina after the Civil War. Like many houses built at the time, it is described as vernacular. Vernacular architecture is based on localized needs and construction materials, and reflects local traditions. Major Bedloe Crosby (B. C.) Duryee returned to Amelia Island after the Civil War. This is the first house he built. Later, he built a larger, grander house on the corner of Centre and Eighth streets. It was torn down to make way for a gas station. The house has a welcoming front porch that stretches across the front. Several houses in the Historic District have a cement step once used by those needing a step to climb into a carriage or to step out. The Duryee, Bailey, and Rutishauser houses still have their carriage steps. The ceilings in the original house were 13 feet, but they were lowered by later owners. In more modern times, the house has been pink with a soft turquoise ceiling to the porch. Some will claim the blue ceiling scares away the ghosts, but it more likely repels insects. Duryee was originally from New York. During the Civil War, he served as Assistant Adjutant General of the Federal Army and was badly injured at Antietam. He was eventually stationed in Fernandina and occupied the Reverend Archibald
Baker’s house on North Sixth Street. Ironically, Duryee was instrumental in saving the bell in Reverend Baker’s Presbyterian Church. It still rings today. In 1868, a presidential appointment as Special Deputy Collector of Customs brought Duryee back to Amelia Island. He found great opportunity and soon became a respected community leader. He built the Duryee Building in 1882. It was a substantial brick building at the base of Centre Street that housed the Custom’s House, the First Bank of Fernandina, and a printing press. He was elected to the City Commission and acted as British Vice-Consul. He was especially proud of his membership and support of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, where he sang in the choir and served as vestryman. His wife, a noted recluse, loved animals but, evidently, had little patience with people. She was known to take in all the island’s strays and donated a water fountain currently located in front of the railroad depot on Centre Street for the use of horses, dogs and cats, but not humans. Another story tells of seeing Mrs. Duryee walking down the street with a cat on a leash wearing spectacles! One of the island’s more persistent ghost stories is attached to the house. It is said that the image of an elderly woman in a rocking chair has been reported.

in the garden Double Mint gardenia
gorgeous gardenias As we begin to move from “armchair gardening” into warmer spring weather, try some fragrant, re-blooming new Gardenias or colorful new Azaleas in your garden. BY BETTY MORRELL
I
t’s a little wintry now, but February means we are not far from warmer weather. Plants get a little more time to rest before they start working again in the spring. I want to continue from last month with the Gardenia, one of my favorite plants, which has new PP varieties: Double Mint and Sweet Tea. Double Mint is a compact shrub with a rounded growth habit that has double 2” flowers that bloom all summer long! No other double comes close to matching Double Mint in re-bloom capacity. It has lustrous dark green foliage and grows to a maximum of 3 feet in height and spread, making it perfect for smaller spaces and containers, where its fragrance can be enjoyed at close range. So beautiful! Another heavy re-bloomer with elegant, densely scented flowers is Sweet Tea. At 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, this plant has tennis ball-sized double flowers. Sweet Tea is more upright and larger than Double Mint, and both are hardy for this area. Both plants can be grown in full sun to part-shade in the ground or in a container. Just imagine the fragrance from all of the Gardenia flowers!
TIP OF T HE M O N T H Do not fertilize Azaleas while in bloom. Wait until they finish blooming, then prune and fertilize with an acid fertilizer.
For your shade garden, try these new PP (Illiciym) Anise trees. The first one is the Pink Frost Florida Anise Tree, a vigorous evergreen shrub for shady locations. Pink Frost has lovely variegated white and green foliage that turns rosy-pink in cold weather. Maroon-red flowers bloom 4 to 6 weeks in spring. The beautiful foliage has a pleasant gin-and-tonic scent. It loves moist, well-drained soils. Pink Frost is rounded in shape, evergreen, and loves the shade. The small Anise Tree Bananappeal is a compact, well-behaved Illicium. It has golden-yellow foliage and a rounded form. The leaves don’t bleach out in winter, and it is more compact and disease-resistant than other Anise trees. With Anise-scented foliage, it’s perfect for shade gardens. It grows 3 to 4 feet
53 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • FEBRUARY 2019
tall, maintaining its small stature and luminescent yellow-gold foliage. Sparkling Sangria-fringe flower is the newest Loropetalum. This big variety is suitable for screening, hedges, and groupings. Loads of shocking red flowers light up these plants in spring. Plant them in full sun to part-shade. They have a rounded-to-spreading habit, 10 feet high and wide. A truly magnificent display of color. It is getting near Azalea time. Azaleas are an old standby for blooming performance each year, which is always a treat after the cold. The new Evermore Azalea is a re-blooming shrub, and it is heat-resistant. Three new Azaleas available are Hot Pink, with bright hot pink flowers in spring, summer, and fall; Light Pink, with the same features as Hot Pink; and Orange Azalea, with clusters of dark orange flowers in spring, which re-bloom in summer and fall. They all grow into a beautiful rounded mound 3 to 4 feet in height. Plant in full sun to part-shade. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

hil and Betty Rae Pierce were driving from Main Beach on Atlantic Avenue into downtown Fernandina Beach when they were smitten. The couple had been renting a home in St. Mary’s, Georgia, while they searched for a location between Saint Augustine and Savannah where they could build their retirement home. After that fateful drive back up A1A from St. Augustine on the way to St. Mary’s, they knew they needed to look no further. The Pierces had previously lived in Cape Cod, but they wanted to move further south. After buying a lot on North 6th Street, they hired Fernandina architect Mike Richardson to convert their plans for a modified shotgun house into a design

for a builder. Richardson referred them to five local builders, and they ultimately settled on contractor Harvey Ward, with whom they worked carefully to build their modified shotgun home on the 50-foot-wide lot. The couple had lived all over the country. Phil’s career in the aerospace industry had taken them to California and Colorado; but ultimately they had landed back in New Jersey so Betty could complete her teaching career. They had always lived in large homes, but knew that they would have to significantly

downsize to live in a 2,001-square-foot home in Fernandina Beach. “When I laid out the plans for this house,” Betty Rae says, “I knew we wanted to have all of our living space on the first floor.” She designed an open kitchen, with an island separating the kitchen from the living room and dining room, but her favorite part of the kitchen is the side door which leads to the driveway and covered parking area. “It is so much easier to unload groceries and everything else right into this side door,” says Betty.

Along the right side of the house is a driveway which leads into the covered carport and shed. The carport, with trim that is a nod to Fernandina’s Victorian past, has two ceiling fans and is often used for outdoor parties. “We set up tables here for my sister’s birthday party,” laughs Betty Rae. “It makes the perfect patio!”

Townies Pizzeria For fresh salads, deli sandwiches, classic hot sandwiches and paninis, wings, fun tidbits like Garlic Knots and Monkey Bread, and, of course, delicious pizza, Townies delivers. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
M
ost of the time, I find myself on the run. Between dance classes and play rehearsals with the kids and various professional obligations, it seems that time runs through my fingers faster and faster every day. These days, it seems a lot of meals are eaten on the run, and fast food chains have made it easy to grab something on the go. It is awesome when a local company is able to capture that same efficiency and provide a quality product. Townies Pizzeria is doing just that, combining digital technology, fresh ingredients, and a strong sense of community. My kids have loved Townies since the early days when they would pound on bongos while we waited for our pies. These days, we have the app on our phones and we can place our order anywhere and receive notifications it’s ready for pick-up. Either way, the service is always friendly. On a recent afternoon, we slid into Townies for a little dinner and a couple of serious games of Jenga and Connect Four. We placed our order and relaxed in the dining room with some old school family fun. We shared an order of Garlic Knots, which are always a favorite. Warm and chewy, the dough is tied in knots, bathed in seasoned garlic butter and parmesan, baked until golden, and served with a side of marinara. We kept it simple for the girls with the cheese pizza, but I went for the Panamaniac, a delicious combination of local pineapple, ham, bacon, mozzarella, and white cheddar cheese. While some think pineapple inappropriate for pizza, when combined with smoky bacon and ham, the sweet-and-savory flavor combination is one of my favorites. Add to that an I-10 IPA from Intuition Ale Works, and you’ve got yourself a real homerun. The pies came out quickly and were still bubbling hot when they hit the table. As they cooled, we finished our appetizer and steadied our hands as we slid the wooden blocks from the teetering Jenga set. When we ordered our pizzas, we opted for the ten-inch pies, which is plenty for two, especially if you indulge in one 64 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
of their fresh salads, blue cheese chips, or wings. Townies also serves hot sandwiches like Meatball and Chicken Cordon Bleu, fresh deli sandwiches, and paninis like Turkey Reuben and Chicken Bacon Ranch. After our pie, we knew we had to have the Monkey Bread, which we had been thinking about since we walked in. On an earlier trip, we redeemed an online coupon
for an order of Monkey Bread knots that we got when we signed up for the app. The cinnamon and sugar-coated delights are one of our favorites, and they shouldn’t be missed. As a proud member of the community, Townies Pizzeria also supports a wide variety of local charitable organizations and worthy causes, especially involving the arts, education, athletics, environmental needs, and our military and emergency service providers. Whether you are looking for lunch, dinner, or a late night snack, dine-in, take-out, or delivered, Townies has what you need. Located at 819 TJ Courson Road, Townies is open Monday through Saturday at 10:30 am and closes at 9 pm during the week, and 10 pm on Friday and Saturday nights.

umans have long believed there is connection between chocolate and love, especially on Valentine’s Day. We know Amelia Islanders love chocolate, too, because we put out a call on social media for our readers to send us their favorite chocolate desserts for Valentine’s Day, and we received lots of recipes! What better way to tell someone you love them than to make a chocolate dessert from scratch. The following are our top picks: First up from Sharon Covey, an Old Fashioned Chocolate Cream Pie, which brings back memories of diner dates, strong black coffee, and tunes playing on the jukebox. This pie is
super chocolatey, creamy, with a flaky crust, and topped with whipped cream. Our second favorite dessert is from Avery Reekstin, something she loves to make for her kids: Chocolate Saltine Toffee, decorated with red chocolate melts. Imagine the delight to find a piece of homemade toffee tucked into a school lunch bag on Valentine’s Day. Our third favorite is an Easy Chocolate Martini from Candice Meggett that tastes so good, your Valentine will beg for seconds. For more chocolate Valentine’s Day desserts (which can be served any day of the year!), visit our website at www.ameliaislander.com/recipes.
