This month, the Amelia Island Book Festival (AIBF) hosts its 20th anniversary program, and in the last few years, the festival has really hit its stride, gathering authors and readers together for some wonderful literary events here on Amelia Island. The festival’s community-centered vision remains a vital one: to open up the world for people of all ages through the promotion and celebration literacy. To fulfill this mission, the festival has brought in a long list of nationally known authors, who have spoken and passed out books in Nassau County schools, and the AIBF has introduced a number of fun events that bring authors to the community as a whole, like the Kick-Off Luncheon and the Face-Off Gala at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island.

These new events have quickly become some of the most popular happenings on the festival schedule. Unfortunately, with the Covid-19 pandemic still impacting our lives, many of the AIBF’s signature events have been postponed this year. Happily, the AIBF Kick-Off Luncheon, one of the organization’s most popular events, has been rescheduled for October. But never fear, the festival is still planning a number of virtual programs hosted by renowned authors as an alternative to their usual in-person events. With ongoing discussions led by 2021 AIBF Honorary Chair David Baldacci, details on these events will be updated on the AIBF website at www.ameliaislandbookfestival.org as they are finalized. Book lovers are encouraged to stay in the loop by visiting their website frequently and by following AIBF on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. All these wonderful events raise money, in addition to the festival’s generous sponsors, to place an author in every classroom in Nassau County and a new book in every child’s hand—13,000 books in all last year. It’s an enormous achievement, and one for which we should be very grateful.

The impressive success of the festival depends on the AIBF’s hard-working board members, sponsors, and an army of volunteers. Many thanks to former and current chairpersons Steve Berry and David Baldacci for creating the kind of nationally recognized festival that bring authors and books to Nassau County for the benefit of young and old alike. The festival’s week-long celebration of reading perfectly fulfills its stated mission to promote a lifetime of learning.

Also this month, we meet Shannon Hogue, who has created a ministry that reaches out with hope and encouragement to those suffering through the loss of a loved one; get to know Amy Wade, also known as the “Beach Junki,” who has a passion for keeping our beautiful beaches clean; discover some exciting new places to live in downtown Fernandina Beach; present some wonderful soup recipes to share for the cooler weather; and much, much more.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Amelia Island Book Festival returns this year under Honorary Chairperson David Baldacci with virtual programs featuring renowned authors.

Asthe Covid-19 pandemic continues to challenge all aspects of our lives, the Amelia Island Book Festival is planning virtual programs hosted by renowned authors as an alternative to their in-person 2021 Book Festival. According to AIBF Board President, Larry Williams, as the festival has grown and changed with the times over its 20 years, this year’s challenges are just another part of those changes.

“We are concerned about the best interests of the health and safety of our authors, students, teachers, and volunteers as well as our donors, sponsors, and participants,” says Williams. “We hope to offer our first virtual

program in February, with more virtual programs planned in the future.”

The AIBF board members are working on possible virtual author events in discussions with David Baldacci, the 2021 AIBF Honorary Chair. Details on these events will be updated on the AIBF website at ameliaislandbookfestival.org. In addition, the AIBF Luncheon, one of the organization’s most popular events, will be postponed until October. Fromthe title, which is not a misprint, it is clearly apparent that the book festival has undergone numerous changes. The founders, Don Parker and Joani Selement, wanted to share the love of books and reading to every part of the community. In a never-ending quest to accomplish this goal, the festival underwent constant adaptations. Some were exciting, others humorous and a few challenging. Here are a couple of favorites.

Let’s jump into Festival history on the beautiful grounds of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church campus in October 2004. The Friday and Saturday festival was in the early years of growth and gaining momentum. The author presentations, writer sessions, children’s events, and luncheon were all bursting at the seams. Aspiring writers and readers alike were hungry to hear any pearls of wit or wisdom the visiting and local authors were willing to share.

With the festival’s expansion uncontainable, Sunday is added to make the event three days and the constant search for larger venues begins. A few years later, the one and only Amelia Island Book Festival in tents on Centre Street premieres on a gray morning. Yes, that’s right, the name was changed so that emails and questions asking if a mistake had been made would cease.

That gray morning becomes a wet, rainy weekend as a river forms rushing down the middle of Centre Street. To get out of the weather, the authors are stuffed into the dry aisles of the Books Plus bookstore, where hearty readers challenged the elements to meet them. Author sessions were held in quaint coffee shops, restaurants, stores, and the library downtown.

A two-story red and white paddlewheel riverboat offers a floating reception and luncheon on the Amelia River. A new challenge arises as the speaker would only be able to be seen by one level of the boat. Ingenuity saves the day, as authors Tim Dorsey and Claire Cook take the stage twice, once on each level respectively, so each attendee gets an unforgettable memory.

Even after that damp year, growth continues and the festival searches for a new home at a new time of year, in February. The Writer’s Workshops had already graduated to the FSCJ campus with five different sessions per hour for six hours on Friday, each taught by either authors, agents, editors, or publishers.

Eventually the Atlantic Rec Center is a welcome large space with lots of parking for the Saturday and Sunday activities. The debut begins with 100+ authors and two full days of cozy, intriguing presentations. Adults, young adults, and children stream into the sheltered Rec Center on what if memory serves correctly were all sunny days.

A later year, Debbie Macomber is the luncheon speaker. It is an event which consistently sold out, and a larger space was needed on the festival grounds. Macomber adds spice and whimsy as she encourages those attending to wear hats since they would all be gifted her latest

hardcover release. Festival attendees do not disappoint as they arrive donned in bonnets, hats, and head dressings, making the day one of the most festive, fun tented events.

Those are a few of the wonderful memories. All of it was just the window dressing to the real reason for the Amelia Island Book Festival, which was always Authors in Schools, which put an author in every school across the county and that author’s book in the hands of every student who had the privilege of hearing them speak. Respectful of the founders wishes and with great pride, the festival achieved that goal years ago and continues to do so.

Baldacci has been an AIBF headlining author for several years. In total, he has published 42 novels for adults; all have been national and international bestsellers, and several have been adapted for film and television. In addition to being a prolific writer, David is a devoted philanthropist, and his greatest efforts are dedicated to his family’s Wish You Well Foundation®. Established by Baldacci and his wife, Michelle, the Wish You Well Foundation supports family and adult literacy programs in the United States.

Some of the Amelia Island Book Festival’s headlining authors throughout the years have included literary greats like Sandra Brown, Kathy Reichs, Sharon Robinson, Margot Lee Shetterly, John Grisham, Diana Gabaldon, Ridley Pearson, Tess Gerritsen, Kristen Ashley, Jacques Pepin, and many more. An Authors Marketplace and writing workshops have provided help and support for many new and aspiring authors of all ages.

AIBF PARTNERS WITH LITERACY FOR KIDS

Although author events will be virtual this year, the Festival has always been about literacy and developing a love for reading at a young age. Especially now when live events aren’t possible, the Amelia Island Book Festival is pleased to be partnering with Literacy For Kids to host Jayne Rose-Vallee, author of Dinosaurs Living In Your Hair for virtual author presentations in first grade and two kindergarten classes

In addition, four hundred signed, hardcover books, Dinosaurs Living in My Hair, Book One and Book Two, donated by Jayne and Heather Mertz, co-founders of Literacy for Kids, will be distributed to the students. The event will take place on February 24, and students in each classroom will have a live presentation and Q&A with the author.

This year’s annual Short Story Contest is in full swing, open to all middle and high school students in Nassau County. This year’s theme is “The Unexpected Happening.” Deadline for entries is March 15, and full details are available on the AIBF website.

In addition, the AEL Foundation $5,000.00 Scholarship Award program, recognizes one Nassau County High School senior for her/his literary commitment to a college education as an emerging author/aspiring writer. An Awards Program to recognize winners of the Short Story Writing Contest and Scholarship awards is expected to be held in April.

ONE BOOK, ONE COMMUNITY

The Amelia Island Book Festival has again partnered with the Nassau County Public Library System in the “One Book, One Community” program, in which one book is chosen and discussed among community members. TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN’S GALA RETURNS ON MARCH 13

Take Stock in Children of Nassau County is excited to announce a virtual gala this year on Saturday, March 13 at 7 p.m. The “Home Grown Virtual Gala” is inspired by Take Stock in Children’s desire to support and showcase local businesses in Nassau County while featuring talented and deserving students, all while keeping guests safe at home. Attendees will pick up a three-course meal from the popular Lagniappe restaurant and tune into the program live-streamed. The gala will be hosted by John Drew from Amelia Community Theatre and will feature entertainment by Take Stock in Children students. “Afterlosing Jake, we were shocked and distraught,” shares Gracie Berglund, who said goodbye to her brother, just 15 years young, on Easter Sunday morning last year. “Nothing about this journey has been easy, but the way our community has rallied around us is a continual reminder of how much Jake was loved.”

Sunshine Saturday Ministries is one of those cheerleaders rooting for, praying for, and doing its best to encourage families just like the Berglunds. “Last spring, I looked around and felt the weight that so many were carrying,” says Shannon Hogue, founder of Sunshine Saturday. “Of course, COVID-19 was bringing discouragement and exhaustion to most of our homes on some level with lockdowns, parents thrown into homeschooling, and kids energy held captive. Yet, while we fussed about our difficulties, other families were walking through their darkest valleys after burying loved ones—and in several instances, those same children they were homeschooling days earlier.”

Shannon’s heart was moved with compassion for all who were hurting, and those of you who know Shannon will attest that when she sees a need, she doesn’t sit idle. “One Saturday, I felt led to leave flowers for a dozen or so people I knew needed encouragement,” she explains. “After I made a few deliveries and connected with both friends and strangers, prayed with them, and saw their smiles as I shared a bouquet, I knew I was just where God wanted me to be.”

When Shannon first came to Amelia Island, she started work as the very first teacher at Fernandina Beach Christian Academy, where she served for seven years developing and expanding the school and building its curriculum. It was here that she earned the name “Ms. Shannon.”

In the summers, kids can’t wait to attend Ms. Shannon’s Summer Camps, and others who need some extra help with

their schooling value the services of Ms. Shannon’s Tutoring. For the past four years, she’s served on the Emma Love Hardee Elementary team, where she coaches both students and teachers on reading strategies and instruction. “While I thrive in my day job(s), the Lord has put it on my heart to do more for Him, and Sunshine Saturday Ministries is my answer to His call.”

Every Saturday morning for nearly a year now, Brent, Savannah, Saylor, and Cayman Hogue have shared their wife and mom with those needing a little help. She starts the day in the Publix floral department with the same team member helping to load her cart. From there, she rings doorbells around Florida’s First Coast. “I pray over each bouquet, pray for—and often with—the recipients, and include a Scripture card.”

“Shannon is a blessing to so many. She shares her valuable time, energy, and money to make others feel good when they are sad, scared, lonely, sick, mourning, or just having a tough time. She has a special way of making people feel stronger, and there is nothing more precious than knowing someone was thinking of you and took time to seek you out and deliver a gift,” says Nicole Anderson, who was recently surprised with a bouquet.

Looking to the future, Shannon is working to register Sunshine Ministries as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation and is looking to grow. In the meantime, anyone interested can join the Sunshine Saturday Ministries Facebook page and follow Shannon live every Saturday, hear words of wisdom, and most of all, find encouragement.

And if you know of any friends who need a little sunshine in their lives or if you would like to support this ministry financially, send a Facebook message. “Sunshine Saturday’s is such a blessing,” Gracie concludes. “Shannon put a smile on my face when I was least expecting it!”

AmyWade is addicted to cleaning up Amelia Island’s beaches. You can find her most every morning with a basket of new treasures hanging from the handlebars of her bicycle.

It’s hard to believe before she moved to Amelia Island that she wasn’t a fan of going to the beach. Growing up in Hilliard, she considered herself a “woods” girl and preferred building treehouses to sandcastles.

But 14 years ago, she was ready for a change. Amy picked up a newspaper and saw an apartment for rent in Fernandina Beach. On a whim, she hopped in her convertible and drove down to have a look. “The apartment was on the top floor of a beautiful pink house, and I knew it was meant to be. Before I even got out of my car, I knew I was going to live there,” says Amy with an infectious laugh. “Well, my nickname is Pinky!”

In a southern accent thick as molasses and sweet as honey, which I loved but she apologized for, Amy told me that it was the best move she’s ever made. “I found my feet in Fernandina,” she says with a smile. “Literally. I got off the couch and onto the beach.”

Without giving it much thought, she started picked up trash, along with treasures she’d find on her morning walks. Pretty soon, people were stopping her to see what she’d found. “I’d get their attention with my treasures—shells and fossils— then show them the trash.” Wade grins. “They always wanted to know more.”

The more questions they asked, the more Amy wanted to learn. Along with looking up the names of shells in her collection, she started researching the effects of different types of debris and how it came to be washed up on the shoreline. In doing her research, she learned the harmful effects of BPAcontaining plastics. That information planted the seed for how she could use her daily walks for more than just exercise.

“In 2015, I decided to use my nickname, Beach Junki, as a way to educate people and bring awareness to marine debris, how it affects our beloved sea turtles and their environment. Reaching children and beachgoers through education is my mission.”

Keeping her bike in good condition is one of the biggest challenges Amy faces. She washes it every day to keep the rust to a minimum. “One day, I hope to own a van to haul equipment and pick up groups of volunteers. Plus, it would be nice to have a way to take my ‘treasures’ around to show people the kinds of things I find on our beaches.”

Some of the treasures Wade is referring to include 40 light bulbs, 500 pairs of sunglasses, over 100 cigarette lighters, and a hundred shotgun shells. She keeps these items on display, cleaned and color coordinated to catch your eye. And it works. Scrolling through her website, it is easy to get drawn in by the bright colors of plastic toy sand shovels or a rainbow made from disposable lighters.

“I have so many ideas and so many things I want to do. I try to stay encouraged and remind myself every step forward is a step in the right direction. Even if it is at a turtle’s pace.”

When Amy isn’t busy cleaning up the beach, she likes to relax by riding her bike on the Greenway or around Fort Clinch photographing nature. Amy is passionate about the safety of Amelia Island’s wildlife and the condition of their habitat. One conversation with the Beach Junki and it’s easy to understand why she’s hooked on what she does. Imagine it is a beautiful Sunday morning in downtown Fernandina Beach. You walk onto your front porch and are welcomed by a fresh breeze off the Intracoastal Waterway, the sun warms you from the east, and a canopy of oaks carries the echo of the local train’s whistle. Later, as you stroll to one a quaint nearby restaurant famed for its brunch, you greet families hurrying to beat the church bells, pass a friend walking his dog, and occasionally make way for a horse and carriage making its way along the cobblestone street.

With its rich history of eight flags, a location between the river and the ocean, and abundant natural beauty, downtown Fernandina Beach is filled with charm. “We love our quiet neighborhood in the heart of Fernandina, with its small town feel and laid-back pace,” said Kari Burgess-Watkins. “Charming homes, churches, and buildings remind us to appreciate living where others choose to vacation!”

Many of you will remember the original location of First Baptist Church Fernandina Beach at Alachua and Fifth streets, which today is home to Celebration Church. What you might not know is that the original campus was divided, and the second half, which was used for Sunday School and preschool, is the new home of Lofts on 5th.

“I saw this property and knew it could be something special,” smiles Sherri Rinker, who is developing Lofts on 5th with her dad, Lee Kinard. “We visited the 1963 concrete block and brick veneer building, climbed a ladder to see the views from the roof, and said, ‘Wow!’”

Wehave had a bit of hard freeze in the past month, and some plants look a little sad. Don’t be discouraged; many will revive themselves when warmer weather returns. Don’t count them out yet!

I found a fascinating new PPAF Begonia in the Lunar Lights series. It is a special plant being introduced this year and it is guaranteed to please. This new Begonia’s name is Sterling Moon, and it is the first one in this new series. This beautiful plant has puckered, forest green leaves, frosted with silver and mint-green flecking. Sterling Moon stands out during a moonlit stroll on a steamy summer evening. It’s a plant you won’t forget.

Besides the attractive textured leaves, it has strikingly colored, large salmonpink flowers, which dance beautifully above young leaves highlighted with a touch of pink. Sterling Moon is a perennial must-have for your shade garden. It grows 24 to 30 inches tall and 20 to 24 inches wide in average soil. This plant is stunning as an edger for the path, in borders, containers, or mass plantings in your shade garden.

TIP OF THE MONTH

In March, use the “thumb test”—scraping your thumbnail down the stems of your plants until you find green—to reach the point where the plant is alive. Prune the plant there. With Hibiscus, you may go to the ground before finding green.

In the last issue, I wrote about Early Wonder, a Japonica Camellia, and Christmas Carol, a Sasanqua Camellia. Now I found another October Magic camellia, a Sasanqua called Crimson N’ Clover. This small-leaved Sasanqua Camellia makes an excellent landscape or container plant, as they are more tolerant of sun and soil conditions than the larger-flowered Japonica Camellia. Crimson N’ Clover is a strong evergreen, upright grower that makes it perfect for screening or as a focal point.

The lush glossy dark-green foliage with reddish new growth provides a stark background for the deep crimsonred flowers that bloom from fall into winter. This plant grows 8 to 10 feet

high by 5 to 6 feet in width. It attracts birds and butterflies, makes great cut flowers, and is a wonderful addition to any garden. Fertilize in early spring, before the new flush.

Two new Encore Azaleas for 2021 are named Autumn Majesty and Autumn Starburst. Both are dwarf plants growing to 3 feet in height and 3.5 feet in width. The blooms are 2.5 inches across. Autumn Starburst is a beautiful new bi-color with coral pink blooms and bold white margins that stand out against dark evergreen foliage. This plant blooms profusely in spring, summer, and fall. Starburst is a compact mounding hardy plant.

Autumn Majesty has masses of petite, ruffled, semi-double dark purple blooms that glow in spring, summer, and fall. This evergreen plant also has a rounded compact habit and stays bright green in winter.

Everything in Yvonne Fenn’s self-designed home has been carefully thought out. Not surprising considering that she is a strategic consultant. She redesigns infrastructure and shares that it is not much different than designing a house. It involves mapping out how you plan to live and have your home function, and then designing to fulfill those needs.

Built in 2019, the unique home is surrounded by a custom-designed “slip fence” which provides complete privacy. Aluminum posts are installed, and fence boards are then placed. If a board goes bad, you can simply slide in a fresh one. Fenn describes her house as Farmhouse Modern. Details throughout the house have farmhouse details. Cabinets in the kitchen have chicken wire screening instead of glass. Tractor seat topped stools pull up to the kitchen island. Sliding barn doors are used throughout the house, eliminating the space grabbing that traditional doors create. Ceiling fans mirror windmill blades.

and stay in. The lot she chose has a story. First, the road name, Scott, was her husband’s name, and the house number a combination of his birthday and their anniversary.

Amelia Island architect John Dodd incorporated her innovative design ideas into the home. A pleasing combination of natural colors flow through the house, reflecting Fenn’s design philosophy. Texture and earthy colors combine as you move from room to room. She credits Coastal Cottage, a design store on the island, for many of the details in the house, including a metal turkey sculpture on the front porch she has named Cecil.

Once in the front door, one is drawn into a large living space that opens up to the pool area and back yard. A gathering place with a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace and flat-screen television is at one end of the generous room. Large “camo” chairs and a well-loved leather sofa finish off the space. Shelves on either side showcase favorite collectibles. At the far end of the great room, the kitchen and dining area offer a variety of options for entertaining. A prized piano serves as a design piece and divides the large room – both Fenn and her late husband were piano players.

Immediately off the living room is a saltwater lap pool with a spillover fountain, which can be seen from all areas of the great room.

Adjacent to the pool area is a convenient outdoor cooking area next to the kitchen and dining area of the home.

The kitchen is user-friendly, with twin KitchenAid refrigerators offering all the cooling space Fenn might need for entertaining. The back kitchen wall is brick tile adding interesting texture to the space. A granite-topped island has a generous farm sink. Fenn is especially proud of a specially planned pantry off the kitchen; its supplies, storage space, and a large sink make a perfect workspace that is hidden from sight.

Fenn has carefully planned a house that will be comfortable as she ages. It is in a convenient island location, the main living is all on the first floor, and the large master shower is built to accommodate a wheelchair if necessary. She has designed efficient office space with a large flatscreen computer monitor on one wall and a customdesigned Murphy bed on another – ready in case company comes.

Fenn continues to put finishing touches on her new home. She is comforted by the sanctuary she has designed as she creates a new life here on Amelia Island.

Thesedays a lot of meals are eaten on the run, fast-food chains have long made it easy to grab something on the go, and recently even finer restaurants have gotten in on the action. I love it when a local company is able to capture the same efficiency as a national chain and provide a quality product. Townies Pizzeria in Fernandina Beach is doing just that, combining digital technology, fresh ingredients, and a sense of community.

At heart, I am an analog man in a digital world; when I want to order pizza, I still call it in. On this sunny but cold afternoon, I was headed home from a doctor’s appointment, so pizza pickup was the call. My phone had conveniently “undownloaded” the app to save space, so after a quick digital search, I touched the call tab and moments later I was greeted by a real person who took my order in seconds. My pizza would be ready for pickup in fifteen to twenty minutes. Townies is a unique pizzeria in the area because they have a drivethru window, which makes picking up orders a breeze. Finally home with our food and after a long afternoon of Jacksonville traffic, I was happy to not have to worry about preparing dinner. This time I tried something new, the Dirty Dina Pizza. For background on where this pizza’s name originates, I’ll only guide you to Urban Dictionary, but suffice to say it is delicious despite its dubious name. Fresh homemade dough is tossed out and spread with Sriracha sauce, topped with meatball, bleu cheese crumbles, sausage, and onions, with an extra sprinkle of mozzarella on top. I also got a Greek salad and an order of garlic knots to split between us, not a bad way to feed four people.

Soup

We miss entertaining and getting together with our friends, but recently my husband, Troy, and I came up with an idea to show our love with soup. We named it the Amelia Island Soup Exchange, and then twisted the arms of several friends to join in the fun.

Here’s how it works: Troy and I made a gallon of Shrimp and Corn Chowder one chilly afternoon. We kept one quart for ourselves and packaged the rest in three quart-size canning jars. We then placed them in gift bags, along with a card and our recipe for the chowder. On the card, we told our friends about our soup exchange idea and suggested

they pay it forward by making a pot of their favorite soup and passing it on to some of their friends.

We delivered the soup to our friends, ringing their doorbells and leaving the bags on their front steps. Our plan was a smashing success, as a bowl of piping hot soup is just what we need to warm our bodies and souls, especially during trying times. We’re hoping that we can all be together again soon, attending backyard barbecues and birthday parties, but for now, homemade soup and a handwritten card is a great way to show your love. The following are two of our favorite soup recipes.

SHRIMP AND CORN CHOWDER

Ingredients

2 lbs. local shrimp, peeled, deveined, and chopped coarsely (save shells)

2 celery stalks, finely sliced

2 carrot, finely diced

1 large onions, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

4 Tbsp. olive oil

2 Tbsp. Old Bay seasoning

2 Tbsp. flour

4 medium red potatoes, cubed

6 cups corn, fresh or frozen

4 to 5 cups seafood stock

2 cans coconut milk

Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation

Place seafood stock in a saucepan and add shrimp shells. Simmer for about 10 minutes. Strain stock and set aside, discarding shells. In a large pot, sauté celery, onion, carrot, and garlic until vegetables begin to soften. Sprinkle vegetables with flour and stir gently until flour turns golden.

Add 4 cups stock, Old Bay, and potatoes, and cook until potatoes are tender. Add corn and coconut milk and bring back to heat. Add shrimp and cook until shrimp turn pink, about 3-4 minutes. If soup seems too thick, add more stock as needed, and add salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with cilantro and add a squeeze of lime and hot sauce if desired. Makes about 8-9 servings.

FIRE ROASTED TOMATO SOUP

Ingredients

6 Tbsp. olive oil

6 cloves garlic, finely minced

3 medium onions, chopped

1 Tbsp. dried basil or Italian seasoning

3 cups veggie broth

3 14.5 oz. can fire roasted diced tomatoes

3 cups coconut milk or other non-dairy milk

Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation

Saute garlic, onion, and dried basil or Italian seasoning in olive oil for about 3-minutes. Add veggie broth and tomatoes, and bring to a simmer. Stir, taste, and add salt and pepper as needed. Add coconut milk or your favorite non-dairy milk, and heat until piping hot, but not boiling. (You may use an immersion blender if you like your soup smooth, like a bisque.) Serve with croutons or crackers. Makes about 8 servings.
