This year, the Concours d’Elegance is honoring Ferrari—as well as a fictitious design called Pignatelli. When we first learned about this concept car called Pignatelli—created by renowned designer Stan Mott—we immediately understood the inspiration. After all, Italian cars, roads, and driving are the stuff of dreams for car lovers and drivers throughout the world. If we can’t drive these cars—let alone drive them on some of the famous roads from the Alps down to Sicily—why not at least fantasize about it? Years ago, I learned how to drive a stick shift in Florence. With its labyrinthine roads, extremely narrow passes, and an off-limits historic center, it was not a good choice of training grounds. On my first outing, I stalled out the car the three times in a row—and quickly invoked the wrath of nearby drivers. The young Italian friends I was accompanying were mortified—in Italy, being a bad driver is a serious embarrassment. Fortunately, it seems that Italians are forgiving people, and, after venting their frustrations, one or two of those angry drivers helped me get the car started, and gave me a quick lesson in depressing the clutch. Once I finally learned to shift gears, nothing compared with smoothly guiding the car through the series of hairpin turns rising up from the Florentine valley to the hills in the countryside. I soon imagined myself a great driver, having hewn my skills in the rough Italian terrain. Unfortunately, the fantasy was short-lived, as I realized that I didn’t drive nearly fast enough to be considered a good driver in Italy. These days, Phil and I are busy racing our kids back and forth to school and after-school activities, and our chances of speeding through the hills of Tuscany anytime soon are about as good as our chances of driving a Pignatelli. That’s why we’ll be over at the Concours d’Elegance this year, dreaming in color about maneuvering sleek cars around hairpin turns. Also in this issue, you’ll find even more to dream about in an article on all of the exciting changes in recent years at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island—including a peek at the beautiful, newly renovated guest rooms. For our “Fernandina Faces” column, Jan Davis sat down with Rick Traum and Nadine Vaughan, who moved to Amelia relatively recently and brought along their writing, producing, and film-making talents, not to mention an Emmy award! t seems hard to believe that the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is celebrating its seventeenth year as one of the top automotive events in the world. This year, at this is internationally renowned event, held here on our beautiful island paradise, car enthusiasts will be treated to some fast, fun cars of the Italian persuasion, including the Ferrari 250 GTO, as well as the infamous Pignatelli. If Ferrari is the real-life car most coveted by aficionados, then the Pignatelli—a concept drawing by Sports Car illustrator Stan Mott—represents the idea of the perfect sports car. “I drew the car I wanted to drive,” said Mott. This year, for the anniversary of the Pignatelli, the Concours will honor the brilliance of Stan Mott, and many
pieces of his original artwork will be made available to the public for the first time. Pignatelli enthusiasts can also indulge their automotive fantasies when the new Pignatelli SLM (Segretezza LeMans) prototype will be unveiled in a world premiere on the Concours field, along with over 250 other entries, in one of the most prestigious displays of fine automobiles ever shown. The Concours is held March 9, 10, and 11 on the grounds of The Golf Club of Amelia Island at Summer Beach and The RitzCarlton, Amelia Island. n addition to Rita Hayworth’s Cadillac, a 265 horsepower 1929 Model J Duesenberg that once belonged to Hollywood darling Ginger Rogers will appear at the show. The Duesenberg became the unofficial car of the stars in the 1930s. Gary Cooper, Tyrone Power, and Clark Gable were other famous names in the Duesenberg order book. As the first Murphybodied Duesenberg, Roger’s 1929m Model J was also the first from the Pasadena, CA custom coach buildingg emporium to have a disappearing convertible top. p Its original reptile pattern embossed leather upholstery is now gone, but current owner John Groendyke of Enid, OK was careful to replicate the original pattern and hides. A vehicle that stood out from all the other cars on Hollywood streets, Natalie Wood’s Mercedes-Benz 300SL, will also compete at this year’s Concours. Wearing optional Rudge knockoff wheels, her 300SL was already rare. But Woods had her Mercedes painted pink, and the interior of the vehicle featured lipstick-red leather. Today, however, the car wears a traditional, factory approved silver blue color, and a meticulous restoration made certain that all the details in Wood’s award-winning 300SL are correct. Silver screen cowboy Tom Mix took a fancy to a custom supercharged Cord 812 Roadster, which will be among the star cars at this year’s show. Cord’s supercharged 812 models were distinguished from the normally aspirated 812s by the brilliant chromeplated external exhaust pipes mounted on each side of the hood and grill. The design of the Cord 812 remains one of the most distinctive of the 20th century.

and Track Magazine, who, together with Patti Hendrix of The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, produced the first Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in 1996. Since then, the show has grown into a truly international competition, drawing people from all over the country and the world. “This year we will honor the iconic Ferrari GTO, as well as Custom Coachwork Cadillacs, and we will celebrate a selection of the winning entries of Florida’s two legendary endurance classics, Sebring and Daytona,” states Warner, “and both of them have been won by our 2012 honoree, Mr. “Quick” Vic Elford.” Considered the fastest in just about anything he raced, Elford was one of racing’s most successful drivers in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Born in 1935 in London, England, Elford began his career as a co-driver in a Triumph TR3A, and then with the BMC works rally team. His legend was to be cemented at Italy’s famed Targa Florio road race in the mountains of Sicily, where, after a tire puncture on his first lap, Elford championed an amazing come-frombehind victory in his Porche 907, in a performance that locals still talk about with deep reverence. “I feel honored to be invited to the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance,” says Elford. “It is certainly one of the most distinguished events of the genre around the world.” Also celebrated this year is racer, designer, commentator, and author Sam Posey, Amelia’s guest of honor. During his three-decade-long career, Posey, a native of New York, competed in just about every form of racing, including Can-Am, Trans-Am, World Endurance Championship, and Indy Cars, just to name a few. The racing achievement closest to Posey’s heart was being the first to break Lime Rock Park’s one-minute barrier, when he piloted his McLaren Mk II Can-Am sports car to a single 58.6

second lap around his home circuit’s seven-turn, 1.53 mile road course. From 1982 to 1996, Posey was also a regular commentator on the Indy 500 for the ABC network. “Sam is one of the true gentlemen of motorsports and very respected for his knowledge, insight, and dry humor,” says Bill Warner. “He has done so many things so well in racing, and he has that one-of-a-kind style in the commentary booth.” The show kicks off with the Passport Transport Marque Road Tour, open to featured Shelby Cobras, Styling Department Corvettes, Custom Coachwork Cadillacs, and Ferrari 250 GTOs. The tour concludes in Downtown Fernandina Beach for public display on Friday morning, March 9, where locals and visitors will be treated to some of the most collectible and impressive roadsters in the world. Saturday, March 10 features the Heacock Classic Car Insurance Silent Auction and the RM Auction, both held on the grounds of The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. There are also several seminars offered, including a Great Endurance Drivers Seminar, and a new program this year that helps those new to car collecting learn about investing in rare automobiles. Also on Saturday, there will be book and poster signings by the celebrity honorees.

This Year’s Featured Automobiles Ferrari 250 GTO This year marks the 50th anniversary of the legendary Ferrari 250 GTO, a vehicle that is universally considered to be the most coveted of all Ferraris built. following function, this efficient shape was inadvertently one of the most aerodynamic to grace a Ferrari chassis. With this level of performance, the 250 GTO is currently one of the most expensive cars in the world, valued at $25 to $30 million. Only a handful of the Ferrari 250 GTOs in the world have been documented as originals, and to see one of these cars at The Amelia this year is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Cobra Daytona Coupe There were just six Cobra Daytona Coupes constructed for the 1964 and 1965 World Championship racing season. They were hand-built to do a specific job: win the World Championship for America, and for Cobra creator Carroll Shelby. He came close in 1964, but was maneuvered out by Enzo Ferrari, who lobbied to have the final race of the season cancelled, a move that defeated Shelby’s Cobra by default. Shelby swore to win the next year, and he did, with Roger Miller’s Cobra Daytona Coupe – yes, that’s the actual car that will be featured at The Amelia this year. This vehicle is the most successful racer of its breed, winning as many victories as the rest of its Cobra siblings combined. Experimental Chevrolet Corvette The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is famous for featuring unique and rarely seen cars, and featuring this experimental Corvette keeps that tradition alive. The Chevrolet Corvette SS Sebring was an experimental magnesium-bodied car that set a new lap record at Sebring, Florida, in 1957. With the first and only body built of magnesium, it was meant to be light for speed, yet sturdy for endurance. Zora Arkus-Duntov, engineer and designer of the vehicle, presented it at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 29, 1967, during the drivers’ meeting prior to the 51st Indy 500 mile race, which was paced by a Chevrolet Camaro.

The 1957 Corvette SS was a concept car, created with the goal of competing in the 24 Hours of LeMans. Two chassis were built, ‘the Mule’ and the car to be raced. The test of this experimental car, however, would not be in the crucible of LeMans, but in its shorter American counterpart, the 12 Hours of Sebring, where the car had a bushing failure in the first hour, retired from the race, and was pulled from racing the following month. Despite its short career, it served as the forerunner to many Corvette sports and racing models Custom Coachwork Cadillacs Sixteen Custom Coachwork Cadillacs will be on display this year, including actress Rita Hayworth’s 1953 Cadillac by Ghia. The world’s wealthiest man at the time, Prince Aly Khan, gave the car to Hayworth, to whom he was married briefly. The car was one of two built by Ghia and nicely combines the exotic looks of an Italian-bodied custom automobile with powerful and reliable Cadillac running gear. Always held the second full weekend in March, “The Amelia” draws over 250 rare vehicles, displayed on the 10th and 18th fairways of the Golf Club of Amelia Island at Summer Beach, adjacent to The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. The event is once again sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, and The Golf Club of Amelia Island. The Council on Aging of Nassau’s Transportation Center is the first of two facilities to be constructed at the COA’s new East Nassau location between North 13th and 14th Streets in Fernandina Beach. ileen’s Art & Antiques Centre opened in 1999, carrying a variety of artwork, including paintings, blown glass, pottery, and jewelry – as well as home décor items. Eileen’s is also known as a community gathering place, where good ideas have been known to take root and flourish. Recently, that creative impulse has produced another great idea: the juxtaposition of new, repurposed, and vintage items—along with original artwork—to create a comfortable and inviting look in home décor. Artist and owner Eileen Shannon Moore has teamed up with Bill Ratliff, a former executive in visual merchandising for Macy’s, to devise a creative approach to home furnishings. Utilizing both new and vintage items, the duo has created a collection of unique furniture and accessories, featuring a rustic look for spring. Many pieces are garden-inspired, like the weathered six-pack plant holders, which can be used for plants, utensils and tools, or dried flowers.
Other items include reclaimed materials, like lath slabs that have been taken from old houses in the area as they are renovated. They use the wood to build a mirror or frame and then add pieces like shells and driftwood. The look is relaxed and weather-worn, in muted colors, for a comfortable, coastal look. Other items, like lanterns, terrariums, and bottle carriers, evoke a connection to the past and appreciation of timehonored pieces. They even have vintage farm items, like tobacco-drying baskets. Besides the home décor areas, the store also has newly designed areas for garden, art, and jewelry and accessories – as well as for framing, for which Eileen’s has always been well known. With the redesigned spaces, the expanded framing center, and an ever-changing collection of unique items, it’s a great time to check out all the exciting happenings. ast March, Charlene, Erin, and Amy Kingsnorth opened Fern Lily on the south end of Amelia, in the Palmetto Walk Shopping Village. Charlene and her two daughters have always been extremely close and enjoy spending their free time together—particularly shopping. Charlene, a native of Jacksonville with a background in real estate development and construction, moved to Amelia Island six years ago and instantly fell in love with the area. Erin and Amy, both graduates of Flagler College, were searching for careers that would inspire them. They had always dreamed of opening their own boutique and of creating a shopping experience of unique fashions, gifts, and home decor that mothers, daughters, and grandmothers could enjoy together, along with exceptional customer service. After much consideration and planning, their dream came true last year, and Fern Lily was born. “Our clients say that when they shop here, they feel like they’re out visiting at a girlfriend’s house,” says Erin, “and that’s exactly what we wanted to create.” The Kingsnorths travel far to bring home pieces that are sure to be the talk of the town. “We love providing pieces that women absolutely love,” says Amy. ince the arrival of The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island in 1991, locals have pointed with great pride to the only five-diamond hotel in this area. In turn, the premier oceanfront resort has put the island on the map and showcased to the world Fernandina Beach’s history, restaurants, shops, and Victorian Seaport charm. It has been a great 21-year partnership. With the completion of a $65 million investment in the hotel over the past five years, The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, continues its tradition of excellence. Through a comprehensive plan of renovation that moved from area to area within the hotel, they have achieved a major restructuring, with minimal disruption to guest services and without ever having to close the hotel. Over the past 18 months, the final phase of renovation witnessed an exterior makeover and the installation of brand new floor-to-ceiling sliding balcony doors in all rooms. The new glass doors allow guests to take better advantage of the stunning views offered by the hotel—and sunrise and sunset never looked better! Each of the 446 rooms has also been totally refreshed, with paint, linens, and fabrics that take their cue from the colors, shapes, and textures of the beach. What has emerged is a fabulous new décor - modern, clean, and uncluttered— that reflects the beauty and serenity of the coastal setting. Rug patterns in the hallway replicate waving sea oats or drifts of beach sand. Unusual sconces and mirrors dramatize the walls, as
does artwork depicting Florida’s sea shells. “The overall look is a dramatic conclusion to the five-year investment in enhancing the guest experience,” says General Manager Jim McManemon. The rooms are luxurious and inviting, with that indubitable five-diamond hotel appeal. Early phases of the renovation plan included the addition of a sumptuous spa with a menu of enticing pampering services, including everything from manicures and massages to elaborate salt scrubs. Then came the new Talbot Ballroom, adding 8,000 square feet and creating the largest meeting space in all of Northeast Florida. A stylish new sports bar and updates to the signature restaurants, which now emphasize local cuisine— Fernandina shrimp, in particular—came next. Finally, right on the beach itself, children’s activities were added, along with a Tiki Hut offering drinks and sandwiches, so that guests never have to leave their beach chair. If you haven’t visited The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island lately, it is a great time to take advantage of this beautiful hotel. A visit to one of the decadent restaurants is always a very special treat, and an overnight stay will make you feel that you have arrived at an exotic resort miles away. On March 22 the Amelia Arts Academy will be presenting the Community Band in concert at the historic Peck Center auditorium from 7 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 8pm. The Community Band is the only community band in Nassau County and is made up of all ages and skill levels who perform traditional band repertoires at events such as this. The band will also be holding a concert in either April or May at the Plantation Chapel. A date and time will be announced within the month of March.

The lectures will be held on March 3rd at 4 pm featuring General Carol Mutter, USMC, ret., the first woman in U.S. armed forces history to achieve the rank of three-star general; and on March 9th at 6 p.m., Melissa Ross, an accomplished journalist and local WJCT host of First Coast Connect and who has won three regional Emmy Awards will conclude this segment of the series. Y
es, that really is an Emmy! And it was awarded to Rick Traum for his work as executive producer for American Playhouse on PBS in 1985. His list of other awards in the network television arena is quite lengthy and he and his wife, writer and movie producer Nadine Vaughan, chose Amelia Island as their home two years ago. They have an unabated love for the area and have never looked back after deciding to move here. He says enthusiastically that Amelia is a place of “real people” and that life after all was “not the awards you get, but the friends you make along the way—from colleagues to celebrities.” And he has met more than his share of celebrities. He describes growing up in New York and becoming an NBC page, tour guide, program merchandiser, and, finally, climbing the ranks to become commercial producer for The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson from 1964 to 1967. His assignment was to design the on-air commercials for the show. He describes with a laugh one Alpo Dog Food commercial he produced in which the dog refused to eat the Alpo—that is until Johnny Carson got down on hands and knees and pretended to eat the dog food himself! He said, “Johnny would always appear aloof,” he remembers, “almost shy until the cameras started to roll, and then he was on-stage!” Of the many celebrities he encountered in the business, he ranks Jimmy Stewart as the kindest, most self-effacing of them all—a real delight. Rick Traum’s career spans many decades in the television industry. Although there was time spent in California, the majority of his work was in New York, where he was named NBC’s head of late-night programming and executive in charge of Saturday Night Live. After that, he became CFO of Radio City Music Hall. “It was the worst business decision I ever made because the budget was so tight,” he says. By 1999, after producing specials for Count Basie and Tony Bennett, he had an opportunity to move to Orlando as park producer for the Animal Kingdom at Disney World. That led him to Tampa and Busch Gardens, where he produced the entertainment elements for the “Rhino Rally” attraction. Finally, he landed in Mt. Dora as executive director of the Icehouse Theater. Along the way, through Match.com, he met his soul-mate and wife, Nadine Vaughan, a writer and film director. It was
she who first brought them here for the Amelia Island Book Festival. They fell in love with the island instantly, but it was health issues that solidified the move here. Both are cancer survivors, and proximity to the Mayo Clinic was a big factor in the move. He quickly adds, however, that what pulled him through his health issues was “a positive attitude, a loving wife, and lots of prayer.” He has been cancer free since 2008. And what is their next project? Nadine is executive producer and director of a movie version of her book Native Land: Lost in the Mystery of Time. They plan to film it right here on Amelia Island, once the funding is secured. In addition, Nadine has two scripts in the editing stage: Ten Days to Love, Nadine’s script of how she and Rick first met, which will be submitted to Match.com; and FireCat! The Legend of Amazon Sage. Retirement? That’s not in the vocabulary for these two vibrant people who now call Amelia Island home. Rick Traum and Nadine Vaughan are welcome additions to the community.

king of palms With its striking blue color and regal form, the Bismarck palm is a stunning plant for your garden. BY BETTY MORRELL
S
pring is arriving, and that means there is so much to do in the garden, from cleaning up and weeding, to mulching, planting, fertilizing, and more. Where do you begin? The first thing is to clean up and get rid of the weeds, then you can mulch and start thinking about your some new plantings. This year, a stunning palm called the Bismarck Palm (Bismarckia nobilis) is on the top of my list of new plants. Introduced into the commercial market about 20 years ago, this beautiful silver-blue palm tree has magnificent color and form and is really a sight to behold. It is a native of Madagascar, where it tolerates fairly dry and hot climates. There is only one species within this genus. Either as a single specimen or in groups, this is a strikingly beautiful species, beloved by gardeners and enthusiasts for its blue color. Bismarck palm tolerates a wide variety of conditions, from hot and dry to hot and humid. A single-trunk fan palm, its typical trunk diameter can reach 18 to 24 inches, and, over many decades, it can get quite tall. The trunk is straight, tan

or brown in color, and basically smooth, with hints of old scars from the leaf base. The crown of leaves numbers from 15 to 30 leaves, typically blue to silver in color and slightly arched. There are both green and blue forms of this species. Leaves fall off easily when old and there is essentially no petticoat of old dead leaves, as seen with some other species. The leaf width is six to eight feet with approximately 20 to 30 divisions. The overall crown width is approximately 20 feet. There are male and female individual plants. To form fertile seeds, female flowers must be pollinated. This is usually accomplished by insect, but can be done by wind and proximity as well. The Bismark is a good grower, and it likes full sun, sandy soil, good drainage, and heat. Although the Bismark can tolerate drought, it also responds to ample

water during summer and gives more rapid growth. This palm can be grown in a container. It likes a big pot with plenty of room for root growth. When transplanting, handle roots with care. If roots have grown through the bottom of the pot into the ground, don›t rip them out, dig them instead, or you will have a rapid decline of the palm. This palm tolerates temperatures down to 20 degrees, therefore it might be wise to container plant this tree. This way they can be brought inside during a hard freeze, or put in a protected area (I recommend a rolling plant stand).This palm is not recommended as a yearround house plant. This palm grown in a container will not grow as fast as one planted in the ground, making it a medium-growing palm. A 15-gallon Bismark, planted in the ground, will get up to eight feet in about three years. o see him today in his brightly colored golf shirt, you would never know that Don Fischer dressed in brown for nearly 35 years of his life! Don started his business career as a driver for United Parcel Service, known for their brown uniforms. He rose quickly in the company, however, so much so that, by the time he retired, he was senior vice president and a member of the management team for the billion dollar company. He is credited with many company innovations, including beginning the fleet of UPS airplanes that now circle the globe, delivering those packages that Don once delivered in a brown outfit from a brown truck. It is a true American Horatio Alger story, and his hard work, people skills, and talent were what carried him to the top. Top: New khaki-colored sofas bank the fireplace. Don and his wife, Judy, grew up together in Amboy, Illinois. They started dating in high school, when Don was captain of the basketball team and Judy was a cheerleader. Judy continues to be Don’s chief cheerleader, and four years ago the couple celebrated their 50th anniversary with a surprise family trip to Chicago for Don to see his beloved “Cubbies” play baseball. Their three children and seven grandchildren are located in Connecticut (one of the 10 places the Fischers have lived) and in Vermont, where Judy and Don have a second home, a country farmhouse on 60 acres with a very different lifestyle from their Florida home. For nearly half the year, they are in Vermont, enjoying family outings and surrounded by their loving grandchildren.

Their home here overlooks the 15th green of The Golf Club of Amelia, and, although it is 18 years old, it looks as if it had been built last year. Credit for that goes to Judy, dubbed by her close circle of friends as “The Clorox Queen” for her meticulous maintenance of the house. Her philosophy is to “fix it before it’s broken and replace it before it’s tired.” And the home sparkles under her care. The Fischers were living in Atlanta when they decided to build here. They had been coming to Amelia Island on vacations since the 1980’s, owned a condo at the Amelia Surf and Racquet Club, and bought the Summer Beach lot with an eye toward retirement. “I spent three years, sitting at a drafting table, planning this house and having great fun,” says
Don. “I knew I wanted it to have lots of angles, and it took me all that time to get the concept together before handing it to an architect.” In order to take advantage of views of both the golf course and the peeks at the ocean across the road, the main living space is upstairs. When the house was designed, Judy’s grandmother was living with them, so an elevator was put in. When she passed away just shy of 100 years old, her bedroom suite became Don’s office, and it is now filled with UPS memorabilia. There are two other bedrooms for guests on the lower level, as well as a large family room and wet bar—great for expanded parties and visiting family. Small porches circle half of the downstairs, and Don and Judy love sitting on the upstairs front porch watching

the golfers or using his telescope from the bedroom crow’s nest for views of the starry sky over the ocean. Judy recently enlisted the help of Wendy Smith, local interior decorator, to change the fabrics and soft goods in the living room. “I didn’t really realize how ‘white’ my house was until Wendy added a punch of color in new upholstery,” says Judy. “I love the change.” Judy also talks about going darker in her decorating, but it is still very light, airy, open, and uncluttered with bleached furniture. Wendy added fabrics in beige and a soft water-color blue for both living room and bedroom. A white kitchen and lots of open white decorative cabinets add to the spacious feel of the living space. The most dramatic part of the home is a large mural on the curved front staircase. Executed by artist Henry Van Geck III of Jacksonville, the mural was painted on canvas and then hung on the wall. “It weighs 300 pounds and to see them mount it was very scary,” remembers Judy. It is a handsome, attention-grabbing piece, which makes a statement upon entering the home. The Summer Beach community is always delighted to welcome Don and Judy Fischer after their six-month hiatus in Vermont. Colorful golf shirts suit Don well as the couple enjoys the breeze from the porch of their beautiful Summer Beach home.

The Florida House Inn With Southern charm, rich history, and wonderful food, The Florida House Inn is a delicious find for residents and visitors alike. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
T
he Florida House Inn is Florida’s oldest operating inn, located in the heart of historic downtown Fernandina Beach. Its rich history is obvious everywhere you turn, from its charming rooms and Southern hospitality to its marvelous menu offerings from the Florida House Restaurant, the inn’s Southern bistro. The Florida House Inn is a family affair. Innkeepers Emily and Marshall Sands keep thing running smoothly, and Chef Susannah Sands is Marshall’s mom, the former owner of Susannah’s in Jacksonville. Classically educated by Julia Child and Jacques Pepin, Susannah has catered parties for the likes of Margaret Thatcher, General Colin Powell, and former President George H.W. Bush. Thankfully for Amelia Island, she’s now cooking up some fabulous dishes right here in Fernandina Beach. I invited my friend Terry Smith to join me at the Florida House for lunch. Terry, a local musician and songwriter, is also a foodie, and a great cook himself. We brought along our appetites and were eager to sample some of Chef Susannah’s specialties. Our server, Patrick, started us out with sweet tea (of course!) and a cup each of She Crab Soup and Tomato Bisque, served with tiny corn muffins and homemade biscuits. Three cheers for the bread basket! I have not given up carbs, and the muffins were delicately sweet, while the biscuits were light and buttery. The crab soup was loaded with lots of lump crabmeat, and I loved the fact that it wasn’t over-seasoned—this soup is all about the crab. The tomato bisque had a surprising addition of goat cheese, which gave the soup a slightly tangy nature. Both soups were superb. We then each had a bowl of Shrimp and Grits, and, wow, does Susannah know how to cook grits. Cooked in chicken
broth, they’re served with large, succulent local shrimp, and the sauce is extraordinary. Made with prosciutto, chardonnay, and cream, and then topped with scallions and lemons, this is shrimp and grits at a whole new level! The Florida House is well-known for its family-style dining and their famous fried chicken, so we sampled a few bites of those remarkable Southern goodies—a yummy fried chicken breast served with okra and tomatoes, mashed red bliss potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. The chicken is brined in buttermilk and amply seasoned, before being coated with batter and fried. Each bite was perfect. This is definitely the way to cook chicken. The potatoes had a surprising hint of nutmeg, the vegetables were fresh, and the okra sublime. We swore we didn’t have room for dessert, but there it appeared miraculously on our table, and so we dug in anyway. A giant slice of apple cranberry pie was served warm with vanilla ice cream, and another plate held a dollop of scrumptious chilled lemon soufflé with fresh blueberries. Oh my, what a wonderful ending to our luncheon. The pie crust was golden and flaky, the fruit tender and sweet, and I loved the fact that Susannah threw a few pecans in there for good measure. The soufflé was light and delicious. If you think you don’t have room for dessert, order this sweet treat anyway—you’ll be glad you did. The Florida House is open every day for lunch and available for special events throughout the year. Charm, history, and delicious food make the Florida House Inn & Restaurant a noteworthy and delicious find for residents and visitors alike.

alk about an adventure. Guided tours have always been a popular way to get an insider’s view of a vacation destination or a historic spot, but Segways add an element of fun. This two-wheeled, self-balancing transportation device is designed to go wherever people go, and there are over 500 Segway-guided tours worldwide. Many navigate through busy city streets, theme parks, or resorts—but what about an unpaved, natural setting? What could be more fun than a ride on a Segway along the Atlantic Ocean or an inland waterway, or through the beautiful canopied maritime forests of Northeast Florida? Eco-Motion Tours offers a unique eco-historic tour for those who want to experience exceptional natural beauty and history that goes back over 6,000 years—and you can do it offroad, without disturbing the nature around you. On a crisp January morning, I joined Greg and Maren Arnett, owners of Eco-Motion Tours, on scenic Fort George Island, just south of Amelia Island. Since 2005, the Arnetts have offered Segway tours in the Talbot Islands State Parks, with visits to the National Park Service’s Kingsley Plantation. Now, they have added a new location: Fort Clinch State Park, where riders will have a beach excursion that explores a beautiful section of Amelia Island’s most northern shoreline, looking across at Cumberland Island National Seashore. The Arnetts love showing off what they call “real Florida.” “Every trip offers something new: flowers blooming, butterflies
and birds, bobcat tracks, turtle digs, and dolphins playing,” says the couple. “There are bird roosts and birds of all kinds, including pelicans, ibis, snowy egrets, night herons, blue herons, and wood storks. You just have to know what to look for.” Our group met in the wide, forgiving training field adjacent to the Ribault Club, a beautiful restored historic building on Fort George Island. We each donned the required safety helmet and met the machine we would be riding: the Segway XT cross-terrain model, ideal for sandy trails. Its technologically advanced design senses your body movements, making it very easy to operate. Lean forward, go forward. Stand straight to stop. To increase speed, lean forward a little harder. To slow down, lean back. Wireless headsets allowed us to hear instructions, as well as Greg’s expert descriptions of what we would see on our island adventure. The Segways are set to go no more than 5 mph and are “clean and green.” With wide, low-pressure tires that leave minimal impact on the riding surface, along with its battery-powered and zero-emission technology, these Segways are very quiet, disturbing neither the wildlife nor any people they might pass. Our group agreed that Segways offer the perfect way to explore the trails and pathways of Fort George Island – and we can’t wait to don those helmuts once again for a nature tour of Fort Clinch!
