March is undoubtedly a special month on Amelia. As warmer days start to arrive, along with the beautiful azalea blossoms, we experience a preview of the lovely spring and summer months ahead. The first hints of spring are a perennial reminder of all of life’s possibilities. During this dynamic time of year, we begin to envision the fullest expression of nature’s beauty, and that reminds us of the great potential in our individual lives, as well. March also means it’s time for the eagerly anticipated Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. It is appropriate that this event celebrates its 18th year in March, as it is enjoying its own springtime of success. Traveling all around the country and a great many places abroad, when you mention that you’re from Amelia Island, car lovers of all ages and types will sit up and take notice. Renowned for the astounding gathering of famed historic race cars each year, as well as the panels of legendary racers who drove them, this event has come to be known as the “Racers’ Concours.” Yet there’s something for everyone: for those who love the design of the past, there are rows of pristinely restored antique cars; for those who look more to the future, you’ll find brand new models and concept cars. If you like both concept and vintage cars, you can even go “back to the future” this year, with an amazing lineup of Cadillac’s rare concept cars for the fifties. Each year, our family tries to get out to this event. With our minivan full of kids, we are not your typical car enthusiasts, yet everyone—from grandparents down to our preschooler—remains in awe of the shapes, colors, contours, and sounds presented in this awesome display of design genius. Whether you go out for the day or just watch the cars line up at Peter’s Point or head downtown for the annual Friday parade, it’s something everyone should experience. Also returning this spring, the Micah’s Place Home & Garden Tour presents its “Passport to Collections through a Lifetime” tour at Osprey Village. It’s a wonderful way to support the important work of Nassau County’s only domestic abuse shelter, while getting a rare glimpse into the rich collections built up over a lifetime by some extraordinary individuals in our community. We also take a look at Nassau Humane Society’s Capital Campaign to build a new shelter, a fabulous home in Old Town in our Island Home feature, great gourmet dining at Gourmet Gourmet in our Eating Scene, and much more. During this month of great potential, we hope you enjoy a springtime of new ideas, events, and plans, both in your home and out and about around Amelia. See you around the island!

n an unusual coincidence, three iconic automobiles—the Porsche 911, Ford GT40, and Corvette Stingray—all celebrate their 50th anniversaries this year, and that’s great news for car enthusiasts because all three will be featured at this year’s Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, which returns to The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island from Friday, March 8 to Sunday, March 10. For those of us who drooled over these cars in high school as we prepared to take our driver’s tests, they still bring a rush of excitement when we see one in person. And even more exciting is the fact that the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, one of the world’s premier auto events, is celebrating its 18th year, wowing us yet again with its collection of rare and extraordinary automobiles, and featuring some of these 50-year-old memorable and beloved gems. “The Amelia” gained significant international

prestige when it was nominated for Motoring Event of the Year by the 2011 International Historic Motoring Awards, joining giants such as The Quail, Motorclassica Essen, and Pebble Beach. Bill Warner, founder and co-chairman of the Amelia Concours, was an antique car collector and a writer/photographer at Road and Track Magazine, who, together with Patti Hendrix of The Ritz Carlton, Amelia Island, produced the first Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in 1996. The event has grown dramatically over the years, attracting thousands of people to the island each year. Along with the public display of automobiles, held at the Ritz-Carlton and The Golf Club of Amelia Island, the Concours offers various seminars, social events, and auctions, rounding out a fabulous weekend of exceptional autos, their owners, and car enthusiasts from all over the world.

Ford’s GT40 Celebrates Its 50th Birthday This year, the Amelia Concours, known worldwide as “The Racers’ Concours,” will honor and commemorate the landmark Ford GT40. The legendary GT40 was created in 1963 as a racing car and marketing tool for Ford. A year before, Henry Ford II, grandson of the famous founder and chairman of the world’s second-largest automaker, was to purchase Ferrari, when the deal fell through last minute. His revenge? To create the 200-mpg GT40 and win Le Mans for four years in a row, ending a decade-and-a-half of Ferrari dominance in the 24-hour French endurance classic. On June 15, 1969, a GT40 wearing the famous blue and orange of Gulf Research Racing became the first car to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice in succession. The 1968/1969 Le Mans-winning GT40 will be part of the Ford GT40 Le Mans team currently scheduled to be the centerpiece of the Amelia Concours.

The Genius of Porsche’s 911 at 50 At 4 p.m. on Friday, March 8, the Concours will present a special seminar entitled “The Porsche 911: Porsche’s Flagship at 50.” The seminar will be staged by a pride of Porsche 911

legends. Brumos Porsche’s Hurley Haywood, three-time Le Mans and five-time Daytona 24 Hour winner, raced with Brumos’ Peter Gregg to win the 1973 24 Hours of Daytona, scoring the 911’s first major international victory. Joining Haywood will be Brumos Racing crew chief Jack Atkinson, who guided Brumos’ winning Porsche through dozens of championship and race victories, including the 1973, ’75 and ‘78 Daytona 24 Hours and the 1973 12 Hours of Sebring. Other panel members include Alwin Springer, former Porsche Motorsport North America President and CEO, and Vic Elford, 2012 Amelia Concours honoree. Jeff Zwart also joins the group, an award-winning photojournalist and cinematographer, who raced Porsche 911s to victory in the Pikes Peak Hillclimb, along with Peter Schutz, a man that many Porsche insiders and enthusiasts consider the savior of the 911. The only American to serve as Porsche Auto Group CEO is joined on the all-star seminar panel of 911 legends by famous Porsche designer Harm Lahaajj. “The Porsche 911 is one of those classic shapes, instantly recognizable from any angle, in any light, and at any speed,” says Warner, who has owned and driven 911s for decades.

“Visually and dynamically, there is no other car like the 911. It’s the heart and soul of the company and one of the most desirable automobiles in the 127 year history of Porsche.” A vast array of signature Porsche 911s will be on display all weekend.

Corvette Stingray Seminar Celebrates 50 Years A fine selection of Corvette Stingrays will be the focus of the 18th Amelia Concours, with a seminar on Friday night that unveils the brand new 2014 Stingray, available for sale later this year. Peter Brock drew the original design for the classic automobile when he was just 19 years old, and seminar-goers will have the opportunity to meet the Stingray’s creator, who at the time was the youngest designer to work at General Motors. “Pete Brock is our Leonardo Da Vinci,” says Warner. “He’s still working today, and he’s brilliant.” The new Stingray will be on the fairway for public viewing both Saturday and Sunday, along with a vast selection of other vintage and significant Stingrays.

1955 Motorama LaSalles to Debut at “The Amelia” The LaSalle show cars built for the 1955 General Motors Motorama will be featured at the show this year on March 10. Presented by Chubb Personal Insurance, in partnership with the Bortz Auto Collection of Highland Park, IL, the two featured cars, an unrestored sedan and a newly restored roadster will be seen in public for the first time in 57 years. Joe Bortz has been on the cutting edge of dream car discoveries for over 40 years, and his dream cars from the fifties are certain to delight auto aficionados who attend the event. Although the two cars include an advanced fuel injected double overhead cam aluminum V-6 engine, they were never functional, and were intended to be driven by electric motors for show purposes only. In keeping with current technology, Bortz has restored the roadster to run on electric power. Concoursgoers will have the opportunity to see these cars in action for

Cadillac Concept Cars Star at Amelia Concours

Sam Posey is Honoree at Amelia Concours This Year

A fleet of Cadillac’s rare and mythic Motorama and Detroit Auto Show Concept Cars will take to the field, or rather, the golf course this year. Featured on the 10th and 18th fairways, the Cadillac Concept Cars of the 1950’s were all created as the stars of GM’s Motorama shows. Created under the supervision of GM’s legendary styling chief, Harley Earl, many of these vehicles were not meant to be driven, but only to be shown, and then crushed. Thankfully, orders to destroy these cars were often ignored. These Cadillacs carried the future in their lines, options, trim, and colors, including the headlight style, and even sliding doors, predating the design nexus of all minivans. Nine of Cadillac’s Concept Cars will be featured in the show this

Sam Posey started out his career as an amateur sports car racer, and graduated to the Can Am and Trans Am. Posey raced the Sunoco Camaro for Roger Penske in 1968 in the Trans Am series, and Chevrolet won the championship based on the Penske team effort. Mark Donohue was the lead driver and he won a remarkable 10 of 13 races. Posey’s first race was at Bridgehampton, where he finished 3rd. As an endurance racer, Posey appeared at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on ten occasions and finished in the top 10 five times. His best finish was 3rd position during the 1971 competition, in which he drove the Ferrari 512M. He also won the 1975 12 Hours of Sebring, teaming with three other drivers. He

Over $2 Million in Donations to Local Charities Recently, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Foundation, Inc. presented a check to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida for $100,000, bringing “The Amelia’s” total donations to local charities to over $2 million since the Concours’ inception in 1996. Other charities receiving donations include Spina Bifida of Jacksonville, the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, and the Shop with Cops programs of Fernandina Beach and Nassau County. “These organizations provide much needed service and comfort to the North Florida community,” says Warner. “To be able to support these groups says much about the extraordinary generosity of spirit of the people of the First Coast. We’re privileged to be able to help.”

Today, the owners are Arlene RowlandScott and Wallace Rowland, Lewis’s children. Clayton Rowland, Wallace’s son, has recently joined the business. “We do all of our work in-house,” says Arlene. “All of it is hand-sewn and custom upholstered. It’s a fine art.” Today, Rowland’s Upholstery Plus offers upholstery, custom-built upholstered furniture, draperies, valances, bedding, carpeting, and more, and Rowland’s clients are as loyal as ever. “We love our customers and are so grateful to them for their business,” says Arlene. wo years ago, Joe Winston, a ceramics artist and painter, received an organ transplant that saved and changed his life. A member of the Island Art Association, Winston realized during his recovery that his art could do more than just grace the homes of his clients; it could perhaps help someone else receive an organ transplant, as he had. In March, he will be the Association’s featured artist, exhibiting his ceramics, pottery, paintings, and photography, while donating twenty percent of all sales to the Katie Ride for Life. The Katie Ride was created in 2005 to raise awareness about organ donation and to support the Katie Caples Foundation’s education program. Although only 17, Katie Caples touched more people than most do in a lifetime. Her ultimate act of generosity was the decision to become an organ donor. Katie was driving home on April 18, 1998, from a March of Dimes walk in Jacksonville, when she was killed in a car accident. She provided the gift of life to five recipients, aged 9 to 62, and enhanced the lives of dozens more because of her decision to be an organ donor.

Winston, a graduate of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, worked for years as an industrial designer before he retired. Working in New York City, Joe created components and textiles for televisions, stereos, office furniture, and many other items before moving to Amelia Island. He has been an active member of the Island Art Association since 1995. Joe’s specialty craft as a ceramics artist is designing gigantic bowls, no easy feat for even experienced potters and craftsmen. But he also creates smaller pieces, like his popular turtle mugs. Just a few months ago, Joe was officially discharged from Mayo Clinic, his organ transplant a complete success. Joe’s work will be on display at the Island Art Association on North Second Street throughout the month of March. The Island Art Association is a non-profit cooperative of local artists in Fernandina Beach and Nassau County, whose goal is to further the arts and fine art education. For more information, call the gallery at (904) 261-7020 or visit their website at www.islandart.com. You can visit Joe’s website at www.joewinstonceramics.com.

reat windows start with great window treatments, but who wants to wait weeks to get them? Typically, when it’s time to update the window treatments in your home, you have to purchase from a home center and wait a month or sometimes longer to get them. That’s why Bill Scheff and his wife, Jean, decided to open up their own business, Great Windows of North Florida, in Fernandina Beach. When the couple lived in northern Virginia, they were accustomed to purchasing blinds and shades through a company in Jessup, Maryland, who would manufacture their custom-made blinds in just one day. Bill had sold his computer software business and was enjoying spending his time riding his 3-wheel orange trike around the island and sipping coffee downtown at Amelia Island Coffee. But, when he saw a need for top quality, quick-turnaround window treatments on the island, he came out of retirement and opened Great Windows. “We carry everything from mini-blinds to plantation shutters,” says Bill. “All products are custom made and shipped via FedEx at no charge, and we install, rather than sub-contract, to insure absolute customer satisfaction.” Next Day Blinds Corporation (NDB) has 34 retail stores in the DC area, and they manufacture all products to order under the Great Windows® brand. Bill’s business is No. 1 in the U.S. of all NDB dealers, and his trike-riding, coffee-sipping days are over. “I love the window treatment business,” says Bill. “My only goal is for my customer to be happy!” For more information, call (904) 261-3340 or email Bill at: bill@blindman.us.

Nassau Humane Society raises money to build a new shelter BY KAREN MILLER

ince its founding in 1989, the Nassau Humane Society has found new homes and new lives for thousands of homeless dogs and cats, providing food, shelter, and medical care for abandoned and abused animals to prepare them for adoption. But the shelter on Airport Road, which has served animals and their human companions well for over 30 years, is now nearly 40 years old and in desperate need of replacement. The Nassau Humane Society board reached the decision not to waste money trying to fix the unfixable shelter, where the outdoor dog kennels have no heat or air conditioning and offer only minimal protection from cold winters and long, hot summers. Several of the buildings, such as the cattery, are little more than small trailers and were never meant to be permanent. The entire facility needs repair and expansion to adequately serve the homeless pet population. With the appointment of Brandy Carvalho as executive director on January 1, the new shelter is no longer just a pipe dream, but soon to be a reality as she heads up the capital campaign for a brand new building. “I’m very excited about our new building,” says Carvalho, who had been volunteering at the shelter for many months before her appointment. “Besides the new kennels, the building will have an adoption area, reception area, and an after-hours medical facility.” She goes on to say that the indoor kennels and cattery will provide a low-stress environment for the animals, who are already suffering from abandonment or abuse. Animals that are less stressed are more adoptable and transition better into their new families. Carvalho herself has adopted three cats from the shelter, after first fostering the animals, and so have many of the over three hundred volunteers who help at the Humane Society. “Our volunteers’ number one priority is animal welfare,” says Carvalho. “The board’s good communication with these volunteers is what has made the Nassau Humane Society so successful in getting our animals adopted through our various fund-raising and awareness campaigns. We’re reaching out, and we’re getting a great response for our new building.”

Indeed, the City of Fernandina Beach has committed to match half of every dollar the Nassau Humane Society raises in their capital campaign, up to $500,000. Corporate funding, naming opportunities, fundraisers like Pasta for Paws, Parade for Paws, and the group’s Second Chance Thrift Shop are all ways that Nassau Humane Society is raising money for the new building. “We’re getting creative,” says Carvalho. “We’ll even host house parties, tours of the shelter, and other events to get

people to come see what we’re trying to do here, and hopefully donate time or money to help us reach our goals.” But the Nassau Humane Society is having an even broader impact on the community with its Spay/Neuter Program, the construction of Amelia Island’s own Dog Park, and the way it integrates pet adoption into other non-profit events. More animals that the Humane Society handles are adopted than not—over five hundred last year—and their success stories are inspiring. continued on page 52.

The best time is spent building a kingdom together. • Over 6,000 square feet of brightly lit space • More than 40 dealers displaying their specialties • Outdoor patio filled with garden pots, iron décor and yard art • Complimentary coffee, lemonade and treats, and good music.

In a time of theme-park extravaganzas, laser-light shows and a multitude of pricey souvenirs, sometimes it’s good to stop and remember what family vacation is truly about. But here on Amelia Island, couples rediscover each other on an island ripe with history and Victorian charm, and where the South comes to loosen its collar for seaside living. Come unwind in this place that Time decided to pass gently by, and find yourself slowed to its carriage-drawn pace.

Collections of a Lifetime Micah’s Place Home and Garden Tour returns with “Passport to Collections Through a Lifetime” at Osprey Village BY DICKIE ANDERSON PHOTO BY HOLLY ALLAIN PHOTOGRAPHY

T

he Amelia Island Home & Garden Tour, which began twelve years ago to raise much-needed funds for Micah’s Place, Nassau County’s only shelter for victims of domestic abuse, has returned this year, with a new twist. Four gracious homeowners and two model properties at Osprey Village will open their doors to the public for the Home and Garden Tour, and the homeowners will share the stories behind the unique collections they have accumulated in their lifetimes. Anne Entriken and Sue Braddock, chairs of this year’s event, are thrilled with the theme they developed with the help of Dana Sargent, Executive Director, and Mary Hamburg, Director of Member Services, at Osprey Village. “The ‘Passport to Collections Through a Lifetime’ event is a perfect partnership. We can show off our extraordinary community, while partnering with Micah’s Place to raise money for their important work,” shared Entriken and Braddock. Micah’s Place is the only certified domestic violence center serving Nassau County. Their mission is to provide prevention and intervention services to victims of domestic violence. Many programs are offered to provide programs and education to audiences of all ages including school age children to effect change in behavior and attitudes that may prevent future domestic violence. Four very special homes will be shared with those going on this year’s tour. Art Reeve quips that his home is a garden sanctuary on the outside and “everything our children rejected” on the inside. Overlooking the Ocean Links Golf Course, the view is expansive, with flowering plants and carefully selected and placed yard art, while inside are one-of-a-kind treasures and collections. Barbara Ellis, who grew up near Woodstock, New York, has accumulated art from her family, antique crystal from her grandparents, and a unique rug from her great-grandparents. Her favorite room is her den, where she proudly displays her autographed picture of Arnold Palmer and other golf memorabilia of a favorite sport. George and Fran Davenport boast one of the finest collections of New Orleans-style jazz in the country, over 800 CDs strong, which can be heard in any room of the home through the extensive sound system. The Davenport’s

in the garden Partridgeberry

ground control Attractive groundcover can add interest and lessen lawn maintenance

BY BETTY MORRELL

A

ren’t we lucky? We had a really mild winter this year, and the trees are sporting their bright spring colors and flowers are just bursting to show off their beautiful colors. Spring is such a wonderful time of the year! It is time to start cleaning up your beds. Leaves out, plants and mulch in. Trim the plants that need shaping and give them a little fertilizer. Loropetalum, spirea, and azaleas get cut back when they have finished blooming. For those of you who like to have a vegetable garden, now is the time to put in the colder weather plants, then seeds for green beans, squash, cucumbers etc. I like to get small tomato plants rather than planting seeds; they seem to have a better chance of surviving (at least for me). An interesting ground cover for sun-to-part-shade is Green Carpet, aka Rupture Wort (Herniaria glabra). This is a trailing plant under two-to-three inches tall, with crowded, tiny bright green leaves less than a quarter-inch long. The bloom is negligible. This plant is grown as an evergreen perennial, and the foliage turns a beautiful bronzy red in the winter. There’s some color when you want it!

TIP O F T HE M O N T H For really large tomatoes, put Epsom salts and sugar in the planting hole before placing the tomato bush. Then, repeat the application once a week around the tomato plants. (This is a tip from an old farmer.)

The herniaria is a European herb. The variegated form can easily pass for variegated thyme (called Sea Foam). They have tiny white flowers that appear in mid-summer, but they are too small to see and the bees ignore them. The herniaria Green Carpet tolerates dry conditions, but likes a good deep drink of water during droughts. Green Carpet spreads well by rooting stems, but it won’t grow out of control. Use it between stepping stones, on mounds, around rocks, or in parking strips. It will endure occasional footsteps, but not constant traffic. Make sure the soil is well-drained. When I lived on Long Island, I had a favorite groundcover called Partridgeberry, aka Twinberry (Mitchella repens), which is also hardy for this area.

43 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • MARCH 2013

Partridgeberry is a very attractive small, creeping evergreen plant, native to much of eastern North America. It has roundish leaves less than one-inch long, borne in pairs along trailing, rooting stems. Paired small, pretty white flowers appear in late spring or early summer, which are followed by bright red berries less than a quarter-inch in width. It is a small-scale ground cover best seen near eye-level, like on a shady bank or above a wall. It needs steady moisture and soil with plenty of organic matter. Here’s one for the books—a ground cover (Dichondra micrantha) that is a lawn substitute! It is a ground-hugging plant that spreads by rooting surface runners. Small round leaves that look like miniature water lily pads grow oneto-two inches in height and flower from March to May. It is happy in sun to partshade, and the cover arises very dense. Dichondra micrantha works well between stepping stones, as well as in lawn areas. One pound of seed covers 1,000 square feet. If you have any questions, you can email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

M

ike and Jennifer Harrison have had many homes in a wide variety of environments, from Stratford-On- Avon, England to Denver, Colorado, from Gainesville, Florida to Old Town on Amelia Island. The Harrisons discovered the charm of Old Town while living and working in Gainesville and they were attracted to the small community, where the river, marsh, and creek are closeat-hand. A camping trip to Fort Clinch more than twenty years ago resulted in the land purchase where their cozy cottage sits today. The house offers amazing views of the Amelia River across the San Carlos Plaza, the original parade grounds for the fort which once stood there. Property in Old Town is laid out in the traditional Spanish style, which divides the land into small peonias (one-tenth of an acre). The Harrison house sits on

peonias, not a traditional acre or portion of an acre. Through the years, the Harrison family would camp on their property and dream of the house they would eventually build. The Old Town cottage is the third house that the couple has built. Two of their homes offer dramatic contrasts. “We’ve only had two especially designed and built for us,” says Jennifer. “One was at an elevation of 8,000 feet on top of a mountain in Colorado with, views to the Continental Divide that were fabulous, and our Old Town home here at elevation 20 feet on top of a prehistoric Indian village, with views across the Amelia River. Quite a difference!” Originally designed to be an escape house, the first design for the Old Town house was a modest 1200 square feet. As they spent more time on the island, they determined it was to be their full-

time home and expanded the design to 2000 square feet, including an adjoining carriage house. Although not a large house, its design uses every square inch to create an easy, comfortable living space. Particular attention in the design was devoted to creating spaces for their eclectic menagerie of family heirlooms, furniture, and artwork collected through the years. A stately grandfather clock offers a striking focal point as you enter from the west porch. It’s been in Mike’s family since the 1850’s. The pendulum causes a fully-rigged sailing ship to swing to and fro. A bench (or settle) was made by Jennifer’s Norwegian grandfather, who was an architect, sculptor, professional photographer, woodworker—a true Renaissance man. The artwork throughout the house is

simple and striking. A colorful fabric art piece hangs in the kitchen, the creation of Reverend Patricia Sheppard, a Gainesville artist, who has commissioned artwork hanging in Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville. The piece depicts the Harrison family history while living in the United States and includes their years in Colorado and in Florida. Most striking are the paintings of English artist James Dodds. The Harrisons discovered him while in Wivenhoe, England, and they own ten pieces of his work. The strongly colored, graphic renditions of boats make an interesting statement in their Amelia Island home, which, like the artist’s home in England, is a boat-focused region. Paint colors throughout are soft and comfortable. Jennifer chose a buttery yellow in much of the house, as it

brought sunshine from the outside into the cozy spaces. The kitchen is a cool soft blue. When choosing interior paint, she was advised by a color specialist not to use more than three colors, and those colors should be complementary. All bedrooms, both in the house and carriage house, are in neutral tones, as are the four bathrooms. Blinds are used on the windows so there is little distraction from the beauty of the scenery outside. Master recyclers, the Harrisons have utilized beautiful windows and a heart pine floor from a house in LaGrange, Georgia, that was being torn down. They took all the windows (more than twenty) and doors. They were also minutes ahead of the bulldozers to claim the heart pine that now covers the floors of two-thirds of their house. Another

coup is a large iron gate that once stood at the entrance of the old Fernandina Hospital on North Fourteenth Street. The couple approached the company demolishing the old building, saved the gate, and used it as a focal point of an outdoor patio. The Harrisons are committed to their Old Town community, and they were instrumental in creating a gala Bicentennial Celebration in 2010. The island rallied around Old Town, and the grand collaboration resulted in an unforgettable event celebrating the founding of the community. After a lifetime of moving and creating homes, Jennifer and Mike Harrison have found the perfect place to be – in a cottage on the Plaza San Carlos in Old Town, Amelia Island.

Humane Society from pg 31. Take the story of Aurora, an Alaskan Malamute. She was noticed by Dave and Sally Coyle of Fernandina Beach as they were driving past the shelter in early 2004. Aurora was in an outside area of the shelter and was severely underweight. Immediately drawn to her, they inquired and found out that Aurora suffered from mange, heart worms, and had just completed treatment for cancer, which had been funded by a generous donor. Dave and Sally offered to foster Aurora and help her through her upcoming medical treatments. By the time she was well, Dave and Sally knew Aurora was family, and they adopted her soon after. Aurora has come full circle in her recovery. She is now a certiďŹ ed “Good Citizenâ€? with the Animal Kennel Association and serves as a pet therapy dog. She also visits sick children and adults at Baptist Medical Center Nassau, bringing hope and happiness to others. Gourmet Gourmet With old favorites and extraordinary new dishes, Bill and Yamilka Mertens are creating excitement at Gourmet Gourmet. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

G

ourmet Gourmet has been an Amelia Island icon for many years, well-known for their eclectic menu, gourmet-togo items, and professional catering services. Bill and Yamilka Mertens, from New Jersey, thought so, too, when they visited the island some time ago, and they decided to purchase the business when it went up for sale in 2012. Since then, the couple is having the time of their lives. Bill and Yamillka have a passion for fine food, and Gourmet Gourmet was the perfect fit. They have kept many of the old favorites, while adding some extraordinary new gourmet treats. I visited the restaurant recently with my friend, Bruce, and we were eager to sample their specialties. Bill poured us a glass of Matanzas Creek Chardonnay, a wonderful choice, with notes of pineapple and citrus, along with its well-balanced acidity. We were also treated to an “Amuse Bouche,” a bite-sized hors d’oeuvre of cucumber stuffed with tuna tartare, carrot, chili oil, sambal sauce, red onion, and sesame seed. Fresh and delightful! We chose two of their new offerings: a Caviar Tasting plate, and Fois Gras. The caviar plate featured a variety of roe, including golden caviar from a whitefish of the Great Lakes, black caviar from a Mississippi River fish, and Siberian Osetra

from a sturgeon of the Baltic Sea. Each one had its own special flavor and texture, bursting with that salty and rich taste that you can only find with caviar. The fois gras was pan-seared with red grape tapenade and poached pear, a lovely way to balance the rich and buttery fois gras. Both were fabulous and worthy of a special occasion. For dinner, Bill opened a bottle of Hess Collection Block 19 Cuvee, a varietal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Syrah, and Petite Verdot. This was an exceptional wine and perfect for our entrees, Pan Seared Duck and Tenderloin of Beef. The duck was served with butternut squash, pecan quinoa pilaf, and a Grand Marnier gastrique. I loved that the duck breast was tender and pink, very juicy, and duck always tastes so nice with a little sweetness, so the accompaniments were perfect for this dish. Bruce was especially fond of the tenderloin, which was also pan-seared and served with truffled whipped potatoes, haricot verts, and topped with a roasted shallot demi-glace. This was also an outstanding dish. The beef was rubbed with some secret spices (I presumed they were a secret!) and charred beautifully on the grill, yet still rare inside. The truffled whipped potatoes were very special, and I detected a hint of splendid white truffle oil, one of my favorite cooking ingredients. The baby green beans were served with red peppers, a nice addition to the plate, along with a handful of fried leeks and scallions, a crispy edible garnish. For dessert, we chose a Southern favorite: Red Velvet Cake. What I love about red velvet cake is the hint of cocoa, and the cream cheese icing, and Gourmet Gourmet adds some white chocolate curls. If you do not have a sweet tooth like mine, I would suggest their fruit and cheese platter, which features rare and beautiful cheeses hand-chosen by Bill himself. The Mertens’ culinary creations and their effervescent personalities have won them a place in the hearts of Amelia Islanders. Gourmet Gourmet is open seven days a week. Address: 27 South 7th Street Date built: 1885 Built by: Charles W. Lewis Architect: Robert Sand Schuyler

G R E AT H O M E S O F F E R N A N D I N A

The Lewis-Tabby House BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTO BY JAN JOHANNES

C

ertainly one of the most distinctive great homes in Fernandina’s Historic District, the unique tabby house is a favorite of photographers and painters alike. The house occupies one of the most interesting intersections in the Historic District. At one time, a bed & breakfast inn occupied three of the corners at the intersection, with the Lewis-Tabby House the only exception. The detailed trim on the galleries were typical of the intricate detail that Robert Sands Schuyler included in his architectural designs. Similar detailing can be seen in the Williams House and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. The unusual house is constructed of tabby, and it is the only house of its kind built in the late nineteenth century and the only tabby house remaining on the island. It was unusual to use this construction technique at the time it was built. The method of construction is simple—a mixture of Portland cement and oyster shells is poured into molds to create the walls of a house. Tabby is dependent on an abundance of oyster shells. Thanks to the Indian tribes that occupied the coast of Florida, many middens of oyster shells were left for later generations to use in the fabrication of tabby houses. A midden is made up of the trash left by civilizations that have gone before us. Great mounds of oyster shells can be

found in and around Amelia Island, Cumberland Island, and the Talbot Islands to the south. Locally found oyster shells were burned in kilns and open pits, and then pounded into powered lime. The powdered lime was then mixed with whole oyster and clam shells, clean sand, and fresh water, which were formed into bricks or poured into wooden frameworks to create walls or foundations. You can see the horizontal lines that indicate the individual sections of wall. It took three years to build the house. Tabby was also used to make the floor. The cement wall and simple fencing was built to keep out the local free-range animals. The builder of the house, Charles Lewis, came from Massachusetts in 1867. He was engaged in the milling and merchandise business. He was the land commissioner for the Florida Land and Improvement Company, the Florida Transit and Peninsular Railroad Company, and the Florida Town Improvement Company—the largest holder of real estate in Fernandina at the time. He was a partner in the purchase of the Florida Mirror in 1884. In 1900, he was listed as postmaster in a Fernandina directory. The house has had many lives. It was abandoned, badly burned in a fire, and barely survived. It remains today thanks to its current owners, who are committed preservationists.

This article has been reprinted with permission from Dickie Anderson’s recently published book, Great Homes of Fernandina. It is now available at Books Plus, The Book Loft, the Amelia Island Museum of History, and by visiting www.ameliaislander.com. 68 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • MARCH 2013
