array of events that

include seminars, social events, road rallies, and auctions.

With March comes the long-anticipated arrival of spring, with its steadier dose of warm weather and everything else that follows in its wake. Suddenly, our hearts stir from their winter torpor, turning to happier thoughts of longer afternoons, warmer temperatures, and trips to the beach. We await the change of weather this year with particular eagerness after some unusually cold stretches this winter. As always, the azaleas in profuse bloom will be a welcome harbinger. March, of course, also marks the return each year of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. “The Amelia,” as it is known around the world, was named the 2013 Motoring Event of the Year at the prestigious International Historic Motoring Awards in London. Now in its nineteenth year, the Amelia Concours has evolved into a busy three-day celebration of cars, with a dizzying array of events that include seminars, social events, road rallies, auctions, and driving opportunities, culminating on Sunday with the display of almost 250 rare and restored automotive beauties on the fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia. It’s almost hard to remember the Concours’ more humble debut, the brainchild of founder Bill Warner and Patti Hendrix, then at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. Our hats are off to the hard work of so many hundreds of volunteers, who have made this spectacular event what it is today, and we applaud the more than $2.2 million raised for Community Hospice of Northeast Florida and other area charities. As always, we look forward to those beautiful cars gracing our roads that weekend, as the whole island is swept up in Concours fever. But that is not all we have to look forward to in March. Spring is also a great time to head out of the house and enjoy Amelia Island outdoors. In that spirit, we take a look this month at the Amelia Island Lighthouse. We did a cover story on the history lighthouse and its dedicated lighthouse keepers in 2008, but the lighthouse is also a fun place to visit with family and friends. It is nestled in a charming neighborhood on a bluff overlooking Egan’s Creek and the southwest corner of Fort Clinch State Park. In addition, we have a “Fernandina Faces” profile of Steve and Jo-Ann Leimberg, who sailed into the Fernandina Beach harbor one day and fell in love with Amelia Island. After making it their home, they have found the time and energy to volunteer at a number of island organizations, create a well-known series of photographic portraits, and contribute to a book on Amelia Island! We also take a look at the local housing market, present some great recipes from Karen Miller featuring fresh spring vegetables, feature a renovated Sea Dunes condominium at Amelia Island Plantation, and much more. See you around the island!

Perched on a hill overlooking Egan’s Creek, the Amelia Island Lighthouse is a beacon that never fails to attract visitors and residents alike.

Stephan and Jo-Ann Leimberg first came to Amelia Island by sailboat, begiining a love affair with Amelia Island that now has deep roots in the community.

According to local professionals, steady interest rates and rising prices should continue to put the local housing market on solid ground this year.

As the weather warms, adding fresh spring vegetables to your menus is a real treat, and a good starting point are the three A’s: asparagus, artichokes, and arugula.

Concours d’Elegance AMELIA ISLAND

March 7–9, 2014

N

ow in its second decade, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is among the top automotive events in the world. Always held the second full weekend in March, “The Amelia” draws nearly 250 rare vehicles from collections all over the world to The Golf Club of Amelia Island and The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island for a celebration of the automobile like no other. The annual event will be held March 7 – 9 on the 10th and 18th fairways at the Golf Club, replacing golf carts and caddies with high-style race cars and their enthusiastic owners. Bill Warner, founder and co-chairman of the Concours, was an antique car collector and a writer/photographer at Road and Track Magazine, who, with Patti Hendrix of The Ritz Carlton, Amelia Island, produced the first Amelia Island Concours. The event has grown dramatically over the years, attracting thousands of people to the island. Along with the

public display of automobiles, the Concours offers various seminars, social events, and auctions, rounding out a fabulous weekend of exceptional autos, their owners, and car enthusiasts from all over the world. Warner’s passion for autos grows with each coming year. “We won the International Historic Motoring Best Event Award in London this year,” said Warner. “When they handed me the trophy, all I could think of was our people, especially the 700 local volunteers, who worked so hard to make that happen. That sort of thing is very humbling.” The show’s foundation has donated over $2.2 million to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Inc., and other charities on Florida’s First Coast since its inception in 1996. In 2013, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance won Octane Magazine’s EFG International Historic Motoring Event of the Year award.

The “Underslung”, considered to be “the world’s first sportscar”.

Jochen Mass is Honoree at 2014 Amelia Concours Jochen Richard Mass is a former race car driver from Germany, and he is this year’s Honoree of “The Amelia.” Mass participated in 114 Formula One World Championship Grand Prix races, debuting on July 14, 1973 at the British Grand Prix. He won one Grand Prix race, secured no pole positions, achieved 8 podiums, and scored a total of 71 championship points. “Jochen Mass is our 2014 honoree, celebrating the 25th anniversary of his victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Mercedes-Benz,” said Warner. “He is that extraordinarily rare breed of racer who has won both Le Mans and Formula One.” Three years after retiring from Formula One, Mass won the 1985 German Racing Championship. In 1987, he joined Indy 500 champion and 2011 Amelia Island honoree Bobby Rahal to win the 12 Hours of Sebring in a Porsche 962. Mass’ resume lists 32 World Sports Car Championship victories and 14 pole positions at the top level of international world championship

sports car racing. He has won more Group C races than any other driver. Now retired, Mass is entrusted to drive historic sports cars and grand prix cars for Mercedes-Benz, including Fangio’s World Championship winning W196 Grand Prix car and Stirling Moss’ record setting 1955 Mille Miglia winner. In 2004, Mass raced the Mille Miglia’s 1000 mile route in Moss’ 1955 winning 300SLR to raise money for charity.

The World’s First Sports Car This year, the Concours d’Elegance will feature the forgotten car that started an automotive revolution. The car that many experts consider “the first sports car” will finally have its day on Amelia’s Concours field. That car is the Underslung automobile, and, more than a century ago, its designer saw the future in sports cars. Engineer Fred Tone drew the radical lines that became the Underslung. It was more than a car, it was a concept, and one that looked far into the future with remarkable clarity.

Tone arrived at the American Motor Co. as Harry C. Stutz, his more famous counterpart, left the Indianapolis-based company to join Tone’s former employer, the Marion Motor Car Company. It was a small but historically potent coincidence. The Underslung got its name by wearing its frame below the axles. In 1904, the design was akin to engineering heresy. The topline of the Underslung’s hood was the same height as the fenders that covered huge 36 inch wheels. The Underslung sat low and looked fast. Tone’s inspired design corrected the inherent instability of tipsy, top heavy orthodox designs that had high centers of gravity. It was a simple and elegant solution that still managed to provide more than adequate ground clearance for safe travel on America’s rustic and rural roads. Harry C. Stutz left the Marion car company and went on to create his famous Bearcat in 1914. The glamorous Stutz roadster is often remembered as America’s first sports car. But Fred Tone’s practical and capable Underslung can truly lay claim to the title “the world’s first sports car.”

Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow

Mercedes-Benz’s Silver Arrow comes to “The Amelia” The Amelia welcomes the Silver Arrow will be on the field to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Honoree Jochen Mass’ Le Mans victory in 1989. Mass’ Sauber C9 was built to win the most important, prestigious and commercially valuable motor race on earth – the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Le Mans’ rules were shaped by a complex formula of fuel mileage and engine systems efficiency. The 1980’s was a decade when the world’s major car builders coveted victory in the 24hour French endurance classic. Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Nissan, and Toyota all spent cubic money for the Le Mans victory. Few were rewarded, many disappointed: most were denied. When Mercedes unloaded their three-car Le Mans team for the 1989 24 Hours, the clean silver coupes sporting their iconic three-pointed star were devoid of the usual clutter of subordinate advertising labels. The message was clear: Mercedes-Benz’s Silver

McClaren racers will be at this year’s show to celebrate the companies 50th anniversary.

Arrows were back. By Sunday morning June 11, the Silver Arrows were leading Le Mans. At 4 p.m. and the checkered flag, Mercedes C9 Silver Arrows had finished first, second, and fifth. It was Mercedes first Le Mans triumph since 1952, when the Silver Arrows had also finished first and second. “Jochen’s C9 is the ultimate Le Mans Group C car,” said Warmer. “For 2014, we’ve got an example of the fastest car in the 90-year history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. And we’ve got Jochen.”

The Amelia Celebrates Fifty Years of McClaren McClaren’s 50 year birthday brings a display of rare and significant racers from five decades of competition. McClaren’s were not only victorious in the world’s richest and most prestigious races, the company changed motorsport through a relentless pursuit of perfection and brought a strictly professional approach to a sport that had been more of a glamorous hobby than a true business. Today, McClaren is still the only marquee to win the Formula One Constructors’

Championship, the Indianapolis 500, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Can-Am Championship. McClaren’s racing history includes a list of landmark victories, which are a testament to the company’s groundbreaking performance. Bruce McClaren Motor Racing Ltd. was created in 1963 by Bruce McClaren after he drove for Cooper Cars, winning the 1959 and 1960 Formula One Constructors’ Championship and the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix. Since the first McClaren raced in Formula One at the 1966 Grand Prix of Monaco, the team has logged over 730 Formula One races with 182 F1 Grand Prix victories, eight World Constructors’ titles, and twelve Driver’s Championships. “McClaren’s unblinking quest to improve on what many called ‘perfection’ is what made them the most successful racing team in history,” said Warner. “No one can match their successes across such a broad range of racing team in history. No one can match their successes across such a broad range of racing disciplines. Only Ferrari has won more Formula One

titles than McClaren, but they had a 17-year head start.” McClaren Automotive North America will again be a participating sponsor of the Amelia Island Concours for the third consecutive year. McClaren will host event guests at its brand display pavilion on Saturday and Sunday where several special vehicles will be shown. “McClaren’s racing record is without equal,” states Warner. “The company is about quality and excellence in every component of the car, their execution, preparation, and presentation.” Many more cars will be featured at The Amelia, including a select group of Maseratis. “This year is Maserati’s 100th anniversary. They’re the only Italian car to win the Indy 500, and they did that twice,” said Warner. “Maserati also won Sebring and the Grand Prix World Championship. We’ll have the genuine Indy 500 and Sebring winners on the field to celebrate.” There are numerous events and seminars going on throughout the weekend, which include a Guardians of Porsche Wine Maker’s Dinner, Concours Silent Auction, Passport

Transport Eight Flags Road Tour, Hasselblad Automotive Photography Exhibit, and much more. Information about times and prices are all available on the show’s web site. The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is held at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, and The Golf Club of Amelia Island at Summer Beach, on the 10th and 18th fairways, on Sunday, March 9th. Tickets may be purchased on line at: www.ameliaconcours.org. For more information about all the weekend events, you may call the Concours office at (904) 6360027. The Concours staff will be on site at the Ritz-Carlton beginning Wednesday prior to the show day. The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island is located at 4750 Amelia Island Parkway, Amelia Island, FL 32034. Their phone number is (904) 277-1100. Warner has seen the Concours grow into an international event, joining giants such as The Quail, Motorclassica Essen, and Pebble Beach. “Our European counterparts call our Concours simply ‘Amelia’,” states Warner. “When people who live 5000 miles away do that, it makes you feel that we’ve really arrived, globally.”

AMELIA ISLAND JAZZ FESTIVAL BIG BAND BENEFIT GALA

PIRATE PLAYGROUND OPENING THIS SRPING IN FERNANDINA BEACH Play is a very important part of a child’s social and physical development, and, in our community, there are many children with disabilities who have to sit on the sidelines and watch other children play. 8 Flags Playscapes, Inc. is a non-profit located in Fernandina Beach that is tackling this issue head on by building the first playground in the community for all children. Pirate Playground will help make Northeast Florida a more inclusive place, allowing people of all abilities to play side-by-side with friends and family. On March 29, the First Coast Heeln-Wheel will be held at Main Beach Skate Park, a two-mile wheel and walk to raise money for the Pirate Playground. After the awards ceremony, Pirate Playground and the City of Fernandina Beach will host the first “Slide into Spring Music and Craft Beer Festival” at Main Beach from noon to 9 p.m. The festival will feature live music, a kids’ zone, games, food, and a craft beer tasting. “This project is a community effort,” says Aaron Morgan, chairperson for the 8 Flags Playscape project. “The playground should be completed by May 3, with the help of our many volunteers.” For more information, visit www.8flagsplayscape. org or www.slideintospring.com, or call (904) 335-7253.

The Amelia Island Jazz Festival is proud to announce its third annual Big Band Bash, which will be held Saturday, April 19 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the ballroom at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort. The popular benefit gala dinner dance will present The Dynamic Les DeMerle 17-piece Orchestra featuring vocalist Bonnie Eisele and special guests in a salute to America’s legendary big bands. The music will pay tribute to greats like Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Harry James, with whom DeMerle played drums for many years. A “Meet and Greet the Musicians” cocktail party begins at 6:30 p.m. and includes a complimentary glass of champagne. Additionally, the event will auction an original piece of Jazz Art to be donated by the Park West Gallery. Requested dress is semi-formal. Tickets are $75 per person, and the proceeds will benefit the Amelia Island Jazz Festival Scholarship Program. For online ticket purchases and further information, please visit the festival website at www.ameliaislandjazzfestival. com. Tickets can also be purchased at the UPS Store, 1417 Sadler Road, or at the AIFBY Chamber Of Commerce at Gateway to Amelia.

NASSAU HUMANE SOCIETY CAPTIAL CAMPAIGN FOR A NEW SHELTER Nearly 200 people gathered at the Nassau Humane Society Dog Park on November 21, 2013 for the groundbreaking for a new shelter. The new building will increase capacity for both dogs and cats, replacing the decrepit shelter out of which the organization currently operates. “While this was a momentous occasion for us, our work is not yet complete,” said NHS Executive Director Brandy Carvalho. “We still have almost $400,000 to raise to complete our Capital Campaign. Now we need our community to be as generous as they can, so we can satisfy the mortgage on the building.” The new shelter project has been in the works for several years, but its push for completion began in March 2012, when the City of Fernandina Beach gave $500,000 toward the shelter project. The rest of the money came in 2013 and 2014 through major fundraising efforts. The new building will increase the capacity for more animals, providing safe indoor and outdoor kennels, a larger cattery, and improved medical care. Nassau Humane Society is a no-kill shelter that provides adoption services, spay and neuter procedures, animal rescue, and a community dog park. For more information about donating, call (904) 491-1511 or visit www.nassauhumaesociety.com.

hen Stephanie Medina began working at the Waterwheel Gallery in 2003, under the tutelage of its former owner, Alan Ralph, the Waterwheel was located on First Coast Highway and had been in business for over 20 years. At the time, Alan and his daughter, Allison, worked in the gallery, along with Char Bachman, the gallery director. Medina, an artist herself, pursued her education as a frame designer, and, in 2006, she decided to buy the business from Ralph, who was retiring. “I realized how much I loved the business,” says Medina. “There are so many interesting facets to the gallery and framing. We treat every customer like they are a part of our family. Other companies may offer similar services, but our services are the best, and come with a personal touch.” Medina moved the business from its original location on the south end of the island to the Pelican Palms Shopping Center, a more central location for her customers. She has received a lot of new traffic there, and due to the budget-conscious nature of her customers, Medina enjoys the challenge of refurbishing old frames

and creating new pieces from existing art. “We are a full-service gallery,” states Medina. “We do as much as we can for our customers.” That includes in-home consultations and art locater services. Waterwheel Gallery features the work of twenty local artists and hosts monthly gallery receptions for the artists. In the gallery, you will find bronze sculptures, art glass, textiles, mixed media, giclees, and photography. They also sell high-quality prints, reproductions, posters, and greeting cards. Medina’s dedication to service and her customers shows in everything she does at the Waterwheel. “From in-home consultations, deliveries, and the largest frame selection in Nassau County, we’ve got the ‘corner’ on custom picture framing,” says Medina. “Our artists are amazing and we enjoy working with each and every one of them. What else can I say – I just love what I do!” Waterwheel Gallery is located at 819 South Eighth Street. They are open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call (904) 261-2535 or visit then online at www.waterwheelgallery.com.

ill and Brenda Latimer had been coming to Amelia Island for 30 years before they settled here. Bill worked for General Electric in New England, and Brenda was in home interior design. The two knew that they would eventually retire to Amelia Island, but neither suspected that they would start their own business after retirement. When the Latimers owned a condo on the island several years ago, they discovered that each time they came for a visit, something had gone wrong. Damaged screens or a broken hot water heater—no matter how big or small the problem, it was bothersome. “I wish then that we had someone reliable who would look in on our condo while we were away,” said Bill. “That’s how Brenda and I came to start out own business.” Six years ago, Bill and Brenda bought a home at Amelia Island Plantation, and they decided to help out some neighbors by looking in on their homes while they were away. “Since we live at the Plantation, we don’t have to worry about getting through the security gate. Everyone knows us here and trusts us. It’s a perfect fit!” Bill and Brenda check on homes and notify the owners if there are any problems. With Home B4You, a homeowner can have maintenance done before they arrive if something has gone wrong. “Most of our clients are at the Plantation,” says Bill. “But we can look in at homes anywhere on Amelia Island.” For more information, call (904) 430-3004. homas D. Foy, Jr. started in the financial services industry in New Jersey in 1984. He and his wife, Patricia, enjoyed visiting Amelia Island, and they moved here in 2012. The couple recently celebrated their thirty-seventh wedding anniversary, and, although some of their friends are retired, Tom has no intention of following in their footsteps anytime soon. Tom began his career as a banker. He presented seminars to parents to help them plan for their children’s college educations. He found that he enjoyed educating people about general financial planning and providing investment advice. IRIS is an acronym for Investments, Retirement Planning and Insurance Strategies, the services that Tom offers. “I specialize in helping my clients address their retirement goals by providing them the guidance they need to achieve a comfortable retirement,” says Tom. “Our experienced staff applies a ‘deliberate, handson approach’ to helping clients navigate financial challenges. We do everything in our power to keep our clients focused on where they want to go, and advise them on how to get there. Compassion, integrity, commitment – these are the words that describe how we forge long-term relationships with our clients.” From investment planning and life insurance to longterm care protection, IRIS offers real strategies for success. “I love my work!” says Tom enthusiastically. “I love everything about what I do. I feel I make a difference in people’s lives.” For more information, call (904) 310-6886 or visit their web site at www.iris-financial.com.

O

n the north end of Amelia Island, nestled in the woods yet towering over the trees, stands the Amelia Island Lighthouse, which shines its beams guiding seafarers into Fernandina Beach Harbor. This landmark is a unique historic icon for Amelia Island, but many of us have either forgotten all about it or are ignorant of its interesting history. Amelia Island Lighthouse is the oldest existing lighthouse in Florida and has operated continuously since 1839, when it was moved here from Cumberland Island, Georgia. “The Amelia Island Lighthouse served as a beacon guiding ships and marking the entrance to the St. Mary’s River,” explains Teen Peterson, Collections Manager at the Amelia Island Museum of History. “This was especially important after David Yulee’s railroad linked Fernandina to Cedar Key, making Fernandina an important seaport.” The Lighthouse also has bragging rights as the westernmost lighthouse on the East Coast and the second highest point on the Southeastern U.S. coast at 107 feet above sea level. “The Amelia Island Lighthouse is interesting for its unique location, interesting construction, and welldocumented history,” Peterson notes. Today, the Amelia Island Lighthouse continues to shine its rays, guiding mariners and entertaining neighbors. “We love living so close to it and seeing its beam overhead when we’re on our porch at night,” explains Anne Pringle, who lives across the street. “We visit the property all the time,” she explains. Pringle’s young children, Betsy and William, are growing up with fond memories of the Lighthouse, just as generations of others smile as they reminiscence about running, playing, climbing the stairs, and even crabbing in the creek on the property.

Since 2001, the City of Fernandina Beach has owned the tower and land, while the Coast Guard actually owns the ThirdOrder Fresnel lens, which has illuminated the tower since 1903, and is responsible for keeping it lit. Helen O’Hagan Sintes is the third-generation official lighthouse keeper and its premier historian. Sintes retired to Fernandina Beach in 1998 and went right to work with the City of Fernandina Beach to restore “her lighthouse.” She says she was thrilled when she was granted the position of Lighthouse Keeper. The Coast Guard Auxiliary and its volunteers are essential to maintaining the beacon. One fact that many Amelia Island residents do not know is that we can visit the Lighthouse. “Steve and I toured the lighthouse and walked to the top to see the amazing structure of prisms that we watch every night as it turns and sends rays of lights over the marsh,” explains Pam Simmons, who lives near the Lighthouse. “Sometimes we go down on the dock at night to view the bright prism as it turns.” The Lighthouse sits between North 20th and North Wolf Streets on Lighthouse Circle, which horseshoes Highland Street. It’s just southwest of Fort Clinch, with beautiful views of Egan’s Creek. “The Lighthouse is a unique feature to have in our own backyard,” smiles Simmons. And—for the rest of us—to have right here on our island. Tours of the Lighthouse are offered the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 10 a.m., departing from the Atlantic Recreation Center. For reservations, call (904) 310-3350. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children. This tour does not include climbing the stairs in the Lighthouse. The property is also open to the public on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A

lthough it has been only six years, there is a serious love affair between this dynamic couple and Amelia Island. Steve and Jo-Ann Leimberg first visited by sail boat, then again by trawler, and the beauty and charm of the island seduced them. Later, as a speaker at a meeting at Amelia Island Plantation, the third visit cemented their commitment to make Amelia Island their home. They are currently building a home overlooking one of their beloved marshes. “It is a challenge and a delight,” says JoAnn of the house project. The couple is deeply involved in the community they love. Their commitments include the Wild Amelia Nature Festival, Amelia Tree Conservancy, the Plantation Artists’ Guild and Gallery, the Island Art Association, and the Friends of the Fernandina Beach Library. They care and participate. They also both appeared in a Fernandina Little Theatre multi-media production that featured the poems of Amelia Island poet Nola Perez. In addition, Steve recently collaborated with the Amelia Island Museum of History on the book, Meet Me on Amelia Island, which features Steve’s beautiful photos as well as island stories and recipes. It is available at Amelia Island bookstores and the Museum. Steve, a former tax law professor, is the current owner of an estate tax software company and a newsletter publisher. He is also a professional fine art wildlife and portrait photographer. His subjects are varied, but he is quick to tell you one of his favorite things to photograph is the human face. He credits Stephanie Medina of the Waterwheel Gallery for encouraging him to consider portraits of the many interesting people

that make their home on Amelia Island. When he first met with Medina in her popular gallery, he showed her some of his portraits of birds. She was quick to ask him if he also did portraits of people, and she encouraged him to do his now wellknown “Faces of Amelia” series. “It was a wonderful way to meet some of the most interesting, creative, and caring people on Amelia,” shares Steve. Leimberg is highly respected for his beautiful nature photography, as well as his revealing and insightful portrait work. He was recognized in 2008 as Grand Prize winner of Nikon’s International Popular Photography Mentor Series. He is a popular lecturer and photographic instructor and is quick to encourage people to pick up a camera and start shooting. He encourages people not to be intimidated by their cameras, to be open to learning, and—above all—have fun. Although Steve and Jo-Ann love to travel around the world to faraway places, including the Galapagos Islands, the Middle East, Africa, Svalbard, Churchille Canada, Greenland (their tastes run hot and cold), and, most especially, our country’s national parks, Steve is quick to point out that one doesn’t have to travel to find beauty. There is stunning beauty right here on Amelia Island. What trips do they currently have on their calendar? Iceland and the Canadian Maritimes. Steve’s website, www.unseenimages.com, showcases an amazing variety of his photographic brilliance. His work can be seen at the Island Art Association, the Plantation Artists’ Guild and Gallery, Bar-Zin Restaurant, the Amelia San-Jon Gallery, Gourmet Gourmet, and A Taste of Wine by Steve.

money matters

what’s new in the

housing market

Steady interest rates and rising prices put the local housing market on more solid ground. BY KAREN MILLER

W

ith interest rates very close to where they were six months ago, what will that mean for the Amelia Island real estate market in 2014? Whether interest rates remain steady depends on the Federal Reserve and how the economy performs. According to their latest forecast, the Mortgage Bankers Association expects the 30-year fixed rate to rise to about 4.8 percent by the second quarter of this year, then reach 5 percent in the third quarter. Whether rates rise this year or not, they remain historically low and, by most indications, should remain low. In the housing market, distressed sales such as foreclosures and short sales have remained at the same levels as last year, with slight increases. “Overall, 2014 is looking to be a good year for both buyers and sellers,” says Lois Jost, president of Amelia Island Nassau County Association of Realtors. “Prices are increasing slightly in most areas. Our area remains a highly desirable area for buyers from all ages and all walks of life.” Bankers and lenders agree they don’t have a crystal ball to predict interest rates or home values, but things seem to be looking up across the board when it comes to real estate. “We have become a global economy,” says Reed Birtles, Senior Mortgage Originator with First Federal Bank of Florida. “Something overseas can happen that can drive interest rates up or down. Rates can change from day to day.” Where home buying is concerned, interest rates are not always the primary concern; if a couple wants to buy a home

and have been approved for a loan, and the time is right for them, they will buy their home. What are lacking in the market now are pre existing home listings, and because of that, new construction is on the rise. “New construction has gone crazy,” says Birtles, “Across the entire spectrum of price range. Values of homes have come back up. Most of our mortgages are new construction loans.” Ben Stephens, Mortgage Loan Originator with Everbank, is enthusiastic about the housing market. “The housing market has improved dramatically, across all segments,” he says. “Houses, lots, condos, there’s good activity everywhere. 2013 was definitely a recovery year for local real estate. Foreclosures and short sales decreased, inventory in most segments decreased, some of it due to investors purchasing the aforementioned distressed properties. Just as important, we saw more activity in the $400,000 to $800,000 price point. Condominiums and platted subdivision lots have both been lagging the market as a whole, and there was increased activity in both categories. Additionally, there has been a significant increase in builder and developer activity.” “I expect 2014 to bring more of the same,” Stephens continues. “The drop in inventory brings appreciation, which should allow home owners who would like to sell and move up or down in size or price point the opportunity to sell their home, since now they can pay off their mortgage and still have enough for down payment on the new property.” Jost is optimistic about the housing market in around Amelia Island. “I believe the harsh winter is going to have a positive impact on Florida,” she says. “I have had several phone calls over the past few weeks from people in the north indicating that they are fed up with the snow and bad weather. They are heading south!”

in the garden

hardy hydrangeas The Little Lime and Dear Delores are new hydrangeas that provide beautiful color and will bloom again in the fall. BY BETTY MORRELL

N

ow that the really cold weather is past, it’s time to start our new garden or rejuvenate our old ones. For those who think they may have lost some of their plants in the frost, use the thumb nail method of checking before pulling them out. Just take your thumb nail and run it down the stem or stalk of the plant. If you see green, great; if not, keep going until you see green, then cut the stem at that point. I have mentioned a few new plants from the Southern Living collection, and I have a few new suggestions. One I really like is the Lemon Lime Nandina (Nandina domestica “lemon lime”). This nandina is the first heavenly bamboo to have lime green new growth. The lime green leaves will brighten any dark space and add dimension to an area with lots of evergreen planting. The Lemon Lime is a new dwarf nandina that grows 3 to 4 feet tall and about the same in width when mature. This is a very pretty plant. In spring, the new growth emerges with a bright lime-chartreuse color, and then fades to grass green as the summer heats up. You can use this plant as a foundation

TIP O F T HE M O N T H To create blue hydrangeas, add aluminum to the soil. To turn blue hydrangeas pink, add sulphur instead. When planting new hydrangeas, treat your soil before planting to produce the color you desire.

plant, in borders, as a low hedge, or in a container to brighten a patio or pool area. It can also be used as a specimen plant. Its spherical growth rarely needs pruning. Enjoy this one! Staying with the lime-green color theme, the Little Lime Hardy Hydrangea is a new dwarf form of the ever popular “Limelight” hydrangea. Little Lime sports the same great flowers and coloration as Limelight, but in a smaller package. At one third the size of traditional hardy hydrangeas, this new variety fits well into any landscape. Little Lime is a repeat bloomer and is deciduous. Plant in partial shade to full sun, and give it regular watering. The ph balance of your soil does not affect the color of the blooms.

45 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • MARCH 2014

The Little Lime’s summer flowers open soft green, then turn pink and burgundy in fall. The plant grows to 3 to 5 feet in height and width. If you like hydrangeas, you will love this one. It is a Monrovia plant. Use it on borders, in containers, as a hedge, poolside, or in a woodland garden. Its sturdy stems make it perfect for cut flower arrangements. Southern Living has another new hydrangea called Dear Delores. This plant blooms in the spring and reblooms summer to fall. Blue blooms occur in acidic soils, and pink blooms in alkaline soils. This fast growing deciduous shrub has bright green foliage with a mounding growth habit. It is an excellent choice for a shady border plant. Dear Delores grows 3 to 6 feet in height and width and tolerates morning sun and afternoon shade in our area. Delores is hardy to minus 20 degrees F. The blooms on this plant also make wonderful cut flowers for arrangements, or they can be dried and kept for a long time. As always, please e-mail me at bamorrell@aol.com with any questions. uch of Amelia Island’s charm comes from its pristine Atlantic coastline, coupled with the small-town feel of downtown Fernandina Beach. And this is just the reason a husband-and-wife team of retired bankers from Connecticut chose Amelia Island Plantation as their second home. “We love the Southern feel of the live oaks alongside the beauty of the ocean, and the Victorian feel of Fernandina Beach, which reminds us of the small towns we enjoy in Connecticut,” share Marla Miller and Randy Brintnell in their beautiful Sea Dunes condominium. Sea Dunes was constructed in the 1980’s, and many new buyers are eager to remodel. “The original furnishings and décor were

nice, but we realized we wanted to update. One day, we drove by InsideOUT Home & Garden and saw several neat pots sitting out front and stopped,” explains the couple. They entered the store and chose a blue Chinese pottery piece with some large vines and an antique chest and were about to call it a day when they met owner and designer Robyn Branch, whom they describe as “down-toearth and full of great taste.” Robyn and the couple developed an immediate rapport, with Robyn understanding their desire for an elegant beach home. “In Connecticut, we have an extremely traditional, formal home, and I didn’t want that here. I wanted a getaway—something relaxing, with muted

colors that allowed the ocean to be the centerpiece, and we really trusted Robyn to achieve this since we were so far away.” Robyn and her team got to work, and they communicated with the couple constantly through email photos and phone calls. Together, they pulled off the project perfectly, with Joe Jenkins completing the construction pieces. “The neat part about this home is the homeowners wanted to shop locally and support local artists and craftsmen,” explains Robyn. Almost every room features the work of local fine art photographer Ann Kemp, whom the couple met in Robyn’s store. Ann is also from Connecticut, and Marla and Randy felt they had found a kindred spirit. In addition to supporting local artists and artisans, the couple wished to preserve several original pieces from the home. In the guest bedroom, a Palecek design chair was brought to life when the cushion was recovered in fabric that coordinated with the custom window treatments by Creative Distinctions’ Christy Woods. The couple chose an original colorful mirror for the master bedroom, which Robyn paired with a blue carved glass inside glass lamp. However, while keeping with the spirit of the original, there is also a plethora of brand-new! The Adrianna Hoyas master bedroom

furniture is made in Ecuador from wood that is acclimated to humidity, which allows the sun to pour through the windows without worry of weathering the furniture. “The dark color of the wood really makes a pronunciation next to the room’s blue walls and crisp white embroidered draperies,” adds Robyn. Guests get a warm welcome in the colorful foyer with its hemp and wool rug, which leads one’s eye to the antique chest that the couple found on their original visit to InsideOUT. Next to the chest is a solid column, capiz shell floor lamp that reminds visitors that they are “at the beach.” The dining table is perhaps the crown jewel of the home’s unique interior, with its one-of-a-kind design by Serge de Troyer. It is handmade of coco fiber, with a chrome base and high-gloss finish. Troyer created it specifically for the home, but he liked the end result so much he is adding it to his furniture line. Finishing the room is a Currey and Company rectangular chandelier with wrought iron and recycled glass discs. “We chose it for the glass discs,” explains Robyn. “We wanted bling and elegance, but not crystals. This piece is organic, and perfect for the beach.” “We are thrilled about our new home,” shares the couple, who are eager to enjoy their comfortable Amelia Island lifestyle.

Top: The guest bedroom offers a more traditional beach home feel, with its blues and natural sunshine from large windows. The Palecek design chair was brought to life with a recovered cushion. RESTAURANT

A chic, neighborhood bistro, 29 South serves extraordinary farm-totable cuisine using the freshest ingredients and a creative spirit. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

29

South is a chic, neighborhood bistro perfect for dates, a quick bite, or a casual dinner with friends and family. The menu can best be described as extraordinary farm-to-table cuisine, where Chef Scott Schwartz paints a playground for the palette using the freshest ingredients sourced from local fisherman, farms, and their own on-site garden. I recently joined my two friends, Emily and Joe, for dinner at 29 South. I look forward to their eclectic offerings because I know my favorites will be on the menu—Smokehouse Mussels and Coffee and Doughnuts (yum!)—but Chef Scott always has some new and seasonal items to try. We began our meal with

a glass of MacMurray 2012 Pinot Gris, a lovely, fruity wine, served with 29 South’s homemade yeast rolls. The wine was wonderful and the little rolls were perfect to nibble on before our first course. Chef Scott is very creative, and it shows in all of his food. We ordered Polenta with Roasted Mushrooms, topped with roasted asparagus, arugula, truffles, pecorino cheese, and truffle oil, and it was served in an old fashioned canning jar. The jar was closed up, which allowed for all the ingredients to mingle;

when I opened it up, a most delightful aroma radiated out! The polenta was served with grilled Challah bread, a perfect sweet accompaniment to the rich polenta. For our next course, we ordered Smoked Georgia Brook Trout on Endive and Herb Salad with Pears and Dill Pollen. Joe was especially excited about this dish because he loves smoked fish. This is a new item on the menu with true staying power —it has a wonderful combination of savory and sweet, served with a Champagne vinaigrette. Our server, Kiki, brought us each a glass of White Hall 2012 Viognier, from Virginia, a nice pairing with our salad course. If you’re curious about dill pollen, it is from the dill flower and has a subtler flavor than dill weed; bursting with freshness, it has a gentle, licorice taste. Kiki then brought us our entrée, Pan Seared Scallops, served atop little potato pancakes with creamed leeks and pinot butter. She also suggested a glass of Paraiso 2010 Pinot Noir, perfect with this dish. Pinot Noir is always a nice choice with seafood because of its soft acidity. The scallops had a nice sear on them, tender and sweet. The leeks boasted a gentle, creamy consistency, cooked with ham made from Benton pork in Callahan, and the crispy potato pancakes added another dimension to this wonderful dish. Pinot butter, a rich wine sauce, brought the whole dish together perfectly! For dessert, Emily, Joe and I shared a slice of 29 South’s homemade Pecan Pie, served with Captain Morgan’s Rum and Raisin Ice Cream from Working Cow Ice Cream, made in St. Augustine. Kiki brought us yet another glass of astonishing wine: Dead Letter Office 2009 Shiraz from Australia, a perfect ending to a perfect dinner. 29 South has won numerous awards for its innovative and delicious food, and Chef Scott was recently featured in a new cookbook called Cooking with Intuition. 29 South has it all—great ambiance, fantastic food, an extensive wine list, and reasonable prices. There are small plates from around the world for sharing, as well as grilled pizza, sandwiches, creative entrees, and nightly specials. Asparagus Gougères

Spring! BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY NICOLE KOSOWSKI

W

hen I think of spring vegetables, I consider the three A’s: Asparagus, Artichokes, and Arugula. These vegetables may be available year round in most parts of the country, but, in the spring, they are at their freshest, and often at a great price. We grew asparagus when I was a child, and seeing those little sprouts popping up in the backyard meant that winter was over and good times were ahead. Asparagus Gougères are little cheese puffs that are easy to make and they are a nice nibble to serve your guests. Artichokes may be intimidating to some, with their prickly leaf tips and fuzzy “choke,” but a little trimming of these beauties and you’ll find a delectable flesh within the leaves, heart, and even the stem. The artichoke is actually a variety of thistle, and the edible portion of the plant consists

of the flower buds before the flowers come into bloom. The best way to eat an artichoke is to boil or steam it, and serve it with melted butter. Sublime! Arugula, and other spring greens like dandelion and watercress, have bold flavors, and most people use them in salads. But I like that peppery bite when the greens are sautéed in olive oil with garlic, then served with pasta. Arugula is available at your local farmers’ markets in the spring, usually sold in giant bags and reasonably priced. If you place your washed and dried greens in a clean pillowcase in the produce drawer of your refrigerator, they will last longer. You can make a nice meal with the three As—Asparagus Gougères for an appetizer, Artichokes for your first course, and Pasta with Arugula as a main dish. It’s the perfect way to jump into spring!

Ingredients 1/2 lb. asparagus, peeled, ends trimmed 3/4 cup half and half 5 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into pieces 1/2 tsp salt, plus more for the pot 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper 3 large eggs, at room temperature 1 cup coarsely grated cheese, like Pecorino 1/2 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese Preparation Cut the asparagus into 1/4-inch lengths. Bring a medium saucepan of salted water to a boil over mediumhigh heat. Add the asparagus, and simmer until just tender, about one minute. Drain immediately and reserve. In a heavy saucepan, bring the milk and butter to a boil over medium-high heat. In the meantime, sift together the 1/2 teaspoon salt, flour, and cayenne. As soon as the milk comes to a boil and the butter has melted, remove the pan from the heat and add the flour mixture all at once. With a wooden spoon, beat the mixture until it thickens and pulls away from the sides of the pan, about one minute. Transfer the mixture to a bowl. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Do not add another egg until the previous one has been thoroughly incorporated. Let cool for 10 minutes. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line two baking sheets with lightly buttered parchment paper. Add the asparagus, Pecorino and Parmesan to the dough and mix together. Spoon rounded teaspoons of the dough one inch apart onto the baking sheets. Bake in the middle of the oven until golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes. Remove the puffs from the parchment and serve immediately. Makes 36 puffs. For more Spring recipes, visit www.ameliaislander.com.

If you’re over age 50, get screened for colorectal cancer. Lack of symptoms doesn’t mean lack of risk. A colonoscopy is your best defense. Because they are so effective, colonoscopies are covered by most insurance plans and Medicare. If your exam is normal and you have no family history, you probably won’t need another exam for 10 years.
