ISLANDER

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Amelia Concours is a dizzying threeday extravaganza of everything automotive, with seminars, road rallies, and lots of eyecatching autos.

Philip Kelly Deana Basile Kelly Publishers and Editors Tom Barrett Art Director Mark O’Day Advertising Sales

As spring sails in this year, shaking us from our winter lethargy—more pronounced this year with the unusually cold temperatures we have endured—we raise our heads tentatively above the parapet and look for signs of island life. Beautifully blooming azaleas are our first clue that the weather is becoming more favorable, and, here on Amelia Island, our second clue is that much-anticipated harbinger of spring, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. Known affectionately around the world as “The Amelia,” our favorite automobile show won the 2013 Motoring Event of the Year at the prestigious International Historic Motoring Awards in London, and it was a finalist again this year. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Amelia Concours is a dizzying three-day extravaganza of everything automotive, with seminars, social events, road rallies, an extraordinary auction, a chance to test drive some new models, and, of course, all those beautiful automobiles. The event culminates Sunday with a display of 250 of these rare and restored automotive gems on the fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia. As always, we want to acknowledge founder Bill Warner and the wonderful charitable work made possible by the proceeds from the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. Almost $2.5 million has been raised in the past 20 years for Community Hospice of Northeast Florida and other local charities. Here on Amelia, the return of the Concours each year is much like the return of the legendary swallows of San Juan Capistrano, an occasion to celebrate and a welcome herald of spring. March, with its change of season, is also the perfect time for rejuvenation. With that in mind, Dickie Anderson paid a visit to the two world-class spas we have within easy reach here on Amelia Island: The Spa at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation and The RitzCarlton Spa, Amelia Island. Each offers specialized spa treatments that will renew you in body and spirit, all while pampering you in the most luxurious surroundings. While each spa serves discriminating guests from around the world, they also enjoy share the secrets of good health and well-being with their Amelia Island neighbors. Also this month, we take a look at Care Centers of Nassau, a local non-profit dedicated to providing the developmentally disabled with the care that their families cannot always provide, whether physically or financially. We also take a look at an innovative afterschool program called Marathon High; present some intriguing recipes from Karen Miller inspired by a visit to Cross Creek, the home of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings; take a look inside a beautiful Amelia Island Plantation home, and much, much more. See you around the island!

With the return of Sir Stirling Moss, the Cars of the Cowboys, the Porsche 914, and the BMW 328, this year’s Amelia Concours promises to be memorable. BY KAREN MILLER

C

elebrating 20 years of bringing rare and classic automobiles to Northeast Florida this year, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance has become one of the top automotive events in the world. Always held the second full weekend in March, “The Amelia” draws nearly two hundred fifty rare vehicles from collections all over the world to Amelia Island for a celebration of the automobile like no other. The annual event will be held this year March 13 through March 15, with its centerpiece event scheduled for Sunday, March 15 on the tenth and eighteenth fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia Island. Bill Warner, founder and co-chairman of the Amelia Concours, was an antique car collector and a writer/ photographer at Road and Track Magazine. Together with Patti Hendrix of The Ritz Carlton, Amelia Island, he produced the

first Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in 1996. The event has grown dramatically over the years, attracting thousands of people to the island. In addition to the display of automobiles, the Concours offers various seminars, social events, and automobile auctions, rounding out a fabulous weekend of exceptional autos and car enthusiasts from all over the world. The Amelia Concours was founded to serve charities on Florida’s First Coast. “This year, we added Micah’s Place, the only certified domestic violence center serving Nassau County, Florida, to our roster of charities,” says Warner. “We were also able to increase our annual giving to Spina Bifida of Jacksonville by a third. This is the primary reason the Amelia Concours exists. We don’t measure success by the number of spectators, or the car count, but by our giving. More and bigger checks to our charities tell us it’s been a good year.”

SIR STIRLING MOSS IS THE 2015 AMELIA CONCOURS HONOREE To celebrate two decades of automotive design and competition excellence, the 20th Amelia Island Concours d’ Elegance will reprise the founding Concours and its original honoree, Sir Stirling Moss. This year marks the sixtieth anniversary of his record-setting victory in the Mille Miglia, his first World Championship Formula 1 victory, and the dual World Championships of Mercedes-Benz in the World Sports Car and Formula One drivers championships. Moss scored each Mercedes-Benz victory in the six-race World Sports Car Championship of 1955. It started in May with his legendary triumph in the Mille Miglia, the epic one thousand mile lap of Italy. Sixty years later, that record still stands. Moss’s victory for Mercedes in the Targa Florio, the final round of the World Championship, clinched the world title for Mercedes-Benz. “With Sir Stirling and this extraordinary collection from the Mercedes 1955 championship-season, this year will be an historic and memorable event,” says Warner. “Sir Stirling set

us on our course in 1996 and he’ll launch us to even more successful decades.”

RARE TOWN AND COUNTRY STARS AT THE AMELIA CONCOURS The Concours d’Elegance will honor Chrysler’s timeless “woodie,” the famous Town and Country, on the fairways of the Golf Club of Amelia Island. Chrysler was not the first to offer a wood-bodied car, but the Town and Country was the zenith of the American woodie genre. The Town and Country was the final flourish of the traditional woodie, where the wood was structural and not merely decorative. “The Town and Country was essentially a hand-built car,” says Mark Becker, vice-chairman of the “The Amelia.” “That contributed to its demise. It was the end of an era of manufacturing exuberance. At a time when most new cars were simply warmed over pre-war models, the 1946 Town and Country was truly new,” said Becker. “They married post-war optimism with the pre-war concept of what a luxury car should

be. The Town and Country summons images from another era in America: when elegance and dignity were more important than the ‘bottom line.’” This year, the Concours will feature a full class of significant Chrysler Town and Country models, displaying the final flourish of the American hand-built body era. Among the most sought after vehicles of the Town and Country line are the early “barrelback” station wagons. On the Golf Clubs fairways, you will find the 1941 model, the first barrelback, as well as the 1942 model featuring different design details. “The Town and Country had the grace, pace, and presence of a prewar luxury car,” says Becker. “It was the perfect car to park in front of the club or one’s country estate.”

BMW’S IMMORTAL 328: THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE The legend and legacy of the car that started BMW down the road to earning the title of “the ultimate driving machine” will be featured at this year’s car show. Automotive experts and aficionados of this beloved model consider the BMW 328 the first sports car to deliver on that lofty title. Eighty years ago, Germany was an acknowledged leader in building the world’s

fastest and greatest pure racing cars, but BMW decided to focus its efforts on building the world’s best sports cars as well. While Mercedes-Benz and Auto-Union represented Germany on the grand prix circuit, BMW became Germany’s primary competitor in international sports car competition. The BMW 328 found the right balance between elegant and aerodynamic styling, impeccable road manners, and advanced engineering, laying the foundation for the automaker’s sterling reputation. Even BMW’s emblematic nieren split grill, which continues to embody BMW’s signature style, is an important part of the 328 design package, as is its outstanding performance on the open road. “The star of the BMW 328 class for our 20th anniversary is the unique 328 Buegelfalte (‘trouser crease,’ for the razoredge fender styling) roadster,” says Warner. “It finished sixth in the 1940 Mille Miglia and is the only 328 special roadster built at the BMW factory. We’re honored to have it on the field for our 20th anniversary Concours.”

II, the 1950s saw the rise of television, and the small-screen western became a cultural phenomenon and a staple of all three American television networks. The car business, especially its aftermarket, was quick to exploit the social parallels of the cowboy’s quarter horse and the automobile. A full class of the unique cars created to honor and promote western TV and movie stars will be on the field on Sunday. Leo Carillo’s (Pancho, from The Cisco Kid TV series) 1948 Chrysler Town and Country “Steer Car,” cowboy movie star Tom Mix’s death car, his 1938 Supercharged Cord convertible, and Roy Rogers’ Pontiac by Nudie Cohn will be center stage in the Cars of the Cowboys class. Also slated for the Cars of the Cowboys class is Dale Robertson’s 1958 “Tales of Wells Fargo” Buick Limited convertible built by Buick, and Gene Autry’s 1951 Cadillac “woodie” sedan.

PORSCHE 914 WILL BE HONORED AT THIS YEAR’S CONCOURS At first, some Porsche purists lamented the Porsche 914’s seemingly humble origins. They whispered the “v-word”: Volkswagen. The reality was that the 914 is a blood descendant of the seminal Gmund Porsche, the first car to wear the family name and the crest, a pure sports car designed around a Volkswagensourced air-cooled flat-four and a mid-engine configuration.

PHOTO BY JAMES KRAMER PHOTO BY STEVE LEIMBERG, UNSEENIMAGES.COM

Porsche 914 and the car it replaced at the top of VW’s line, the Type 34 Karmann Ghia.

Porsche had no illusions about the technological and commercial realities of their new sports car. The 914 project began life as a joint venture between Volkswagen and Porsche, which needed an entry-level replacement for the four-cylinder 912. With the economies of scale brought by a production liaison with Volkswagen, the 914 could be commercially viable. The prototype 914 appeared early in 1968, just as Porsche was poised to shed its reputation as a giant killer on the world’s race tracks. The man heading the 914 project was Porsche R&D chief Ferdinand Piech, Ferdinand Porsche’s grandson, who created, almost simultaneously with the 914 project, the all-conquering Porsche 917 Le Mans endurance racer. The lower price of the 914 brought a new clientele to Porsche showrooms. The 914 quickly outsold its pricier 911 stablemate while staying true to Porsche’s technological heritage with friendly Porsche dynamics, solid handling, and, in the case of the 914/6, traditionally ferocious Porsche brakes. The 914 in all its iterations enjoyed a long and productive life as a club racer in America. When Porsche built the 916 in 1972, the six-cylinder version of the 914 packed a 190 hp 2.3 liter six and wore big fenders and more aggressive Porsche styling details. But the 916 was deemed too expensive for serial production. Just eleven had been built when 914 production ceased in 1976.

THE OBSCURE AND AMAZING DREAM CAR ORPHANS This year’s Concours will present a unique class of Orphan Concept Cars from the 1950s and early 1960s. They may have failed to save their creators, but they succeeded by becoming the sort of delightfully obscure automotive exotica that inspires and motivates collectors. General Motors led the way with their travelling Motorama shows of the 1950s. But the economic realities of the early twenty-first century forced even mighty GM to shed the once creative and profitable Oldsmobile and Pontiac divisions. The 1953 Pontiac Parisienne was a modified production coupe, and its most obvious styling element was a landau roof. The Parisienne is sort of neo-town car that was long thought destroyed in typical GM dream car fashion once its Motorama life ended. But GM styling czar Harley Earl liked the Parisienne, so he violated company policy, stashing it with a relative for safe keeping. Arch dream car collector and longtime Amelia Concours entrant Joe Bortz found it in New Jersey more than 20 years ago. He still enjoys driving his one-off Parisienne town car and will pilot it to Amelia’s 20th anniversary field on March 15, where it will share the stage with the 1963 Pontiac’s X-400 and other “orphan” concept cars. The 1950s changed everything, opening new horizons in music, fashion, and personal mobility. Pent-up wartime savings allowed couples to buy houses, start families, and banish two decades of depression and world war. “The Orphan Concept Cars class shows more than an industry grasping for a new

Packard Predictor

direction or a fresh identity, like Pontiac, or for survival, like Hudson, De Soto, and Packard,” says Becker. “The dream cars, even these orphans, show a uniquely American vision of unfettered creativity and a native optimism that has always served this nation well.” The field opens on Sunday at 9:30 a.m., remaining open until 4:30 p.m. Discounted advance sale tickets are available online for $80 per adult and $40 per youth (ages 12-18). Early entry tickets, allowing entry to the field at 8:30 a.m.—one hour before the general public—are available for $100 per adult and $60 per youth. Early entry with a buffet lunch, called “Concours and More,” are available for $170 per adult and youth. Tickets at the gate are $100 per adult, $40 for individual youths, and $40 for active duty military personnel (with ID) and their accompanying individual immediate family members. All tickets include an official program. Children under 12 years of age are admitted to the Concours field free on Sunday with a paying adult. New this year, the Concours is offering a $12 pre-paid ticket good for lunch on the field on Sunday. Children under 12 do not need an entry ticket for the event but will need to prepurchase a lunch ticket. Active duty military can pre-purchase lunch tickets as they are not available day of show. You will be able to purchase your event tickets beginning Thursday, March 12 inside The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, as well as at the gate. For more information about tickets, seminars, auctions, and other Concours events, visit www.ameliaconcours.org.

FERRARIS HIGHLIGHT RM AUCTIONS LINE-UP AT THE CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE

WRITERS BY THE SEA BEGINS MONTHLY MEETINGS Formerly known as the Florida Writers Group of Nassau County, Writers by the Sea welcomes writers of all genres and levels of experience. The new organization offers a revamped format and a new meeting place, day, and time, with monthly topics targeted to further every writer’s goals. The group meets every third Thursday of the month upstairs at Café Karibo at 27 North Third Street. The group’s 2015 planning committee has laid out a year’s worth of programs based on the input from writers. Registration begins at 6 p.m. with networking and the opportunity to buy food and beverages in the restaurant to take into the meeting, if desired. The program begins at 6:30 sharp. Each month’s program begins with a brief business meeting, followed by a program centered on a topic of prime interest to area writers. The program may be followed by a critique session for those who wish to participate. “Our purpose is to provide a forum for writers to achieve their goals,” says Nadine Vaughan Williams, the 2015 co-chairman of the planning committee. For more information, contact Nadine Vaughan Williams at nvaughanwilliams@gmail.com or Nancy Blanton at blantonn@msn.com.

An all-original 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta, which recently emerged from twenty-five years in storage, will make its auction debut at RM Auctions’ Amelia Island sale on March 14 at this year’s Concours d’Elegance. Offered by its first and only owner, this time warp Daytona surfaced last month after spending over two decades in a Toronto parking garage. In addition, a 1960 Ferrari 400 Superamerica SWB Cabriolet will be one of the most valuable cars ever offered at the Amelia Island auction. Along with the Ferraris, a one-of-a-kind 1930 Duesenberg Model J Sweep Panel Dual Cowl Phaeton will be featured, the one and only long-wheelbase of its kind built. A highly original 1955 Austin Healey 100S, DARIN SCHNABEL (C) 2014 COURTESY RM AUCTIONS built for actor Jackie Cooper and one of only fifty competition Healey 100s, will also be featured. In addition, the RM Auction presents an authentic, well-known 1927 Stutz Vertical Eight Black Hawk Custom Two-Passenger Speedster, one of the most important Stutzes ever made, with an extensively documented history. “These cars are definitely once-in-a-lifetime finds,” says Gord Duff, Car Specialist for RM Auctions. he Island Art Association is owned and operated by almost 200 artists; their “Featured Artist of the Month” is yet another avenue for the members to show and sell their work. Each month an artist is selected to exhibit their work for the entire month, with their opening reception coinciding with the Second Saturday Artrageous Artwalk. This month’s featured artist, Lisa Inglis, has a bachelor’s degree in art education and is a former high school art teacher who loves to bring the joy of discovery and creating to new people. Inglis hosts an informal “painting and pints” session for adults at the Green Turtle on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. She also teaches a beginning drawing class in the spring to a variety of students. “However,” says Inglis, “some of the students have been attending long enough that they can hardly be considered ‘beginners’ at this point.” For her own work, Lisa has most recently been working on a series of paintings called “Escapes”. “The escape may be that of the artist or of the viewer,” says Inglis. “Many of the paintings in

the series will depict local scenery, some of the art will be for the sake of it, and some will be scenes encountered while traveling.” The format for the “Escapes” series is intentionally small enough to fit in a suitcase. It is the artist’s goal to spend more time being creative wherever she is. Also, this size makes it easy for visitors to our area to take a piece of Amelia Island home with them. The Island Art Association is located at 18 North 2nd Street in the Historic District of Fernandina Beach. IAA members renovated an old restaurant to convert it into an artist owned and operated art gallery and meeting place. They also have four satellite gallery locations including Baptist Medical Center Nassau, The Amelia Island Fernandina Beach Yulee Chamber of Commerce, the Council on Aging, and Seaside Amelia Inn. Join IAA and Lisa Inglis during Second Saturday Artrageous Artwalk on March 14 from 5 to 8 p.m., to enjoy great art, conversation, light appetizers, and beverages. For more information about the gallery, call (904) 261-7020 or visit www.islandart.org.

hile visiting Amelia Island for a rare leisure day last year, Michael and Lynne Snaid came upon a vacant store on Centre Street. Soon they were meeting with the owner of the building, Don Shaw, about opening a new Cinnamon Bear Country Store in that location. “I have never met anyone like Don Shaw,” says Michael. “He’s a person with a unique blend of integrity and astute business skills.” The Snaids own three other Cinnamon Bear stores, two in Savannah and one on Hilton Head, but the Amelia Island location is larger than the others. “The extra space has allowed us to bring in well-known lines like Peter Millar menswear, Lampe Berger fragrance systems, and John Medeiros jewelry, in addition to our gourmet foods, toys, books, gifts, flags, candy, and our famous hand-dipped ice cream, available in 24 flavors,” says Michael. Danny Swinton, the Hilton Head manager, agreed to move to Amelia Island and manage the new store. Michael realized how special Fernandina Beach was when he began hiring students for the store. “I was so impressed by the caliber of the students here,” says Michael. “They are reliable, polite, friendly, and smart – a credit to their community.” Michael and Lynne are very “hands on” when it comes to their stores, working side-by-side with their colleagues, six days a week. Cinnamon Bear Country Store is open seven days a week and offers shipping on everything. For more information, call (904) 432-7932 or visit www.cinnamonbearstores.com.

Amelia’s Fine Jewelry

ewelry has always been a family business for Gigi Grubner. She got her start in 1991 working with her sister and brother-in-law at Weissers Jewelers in upstate New York. When her husband John was recruited to help open the new Harris Teeter Store on Amelia Island in 2000, they decide to pack their children and two furry family members and move to Amelia Island’s sunny climate. Seven years ago, with “$50 and a dream,” and by the grace of God, Amelia’s Fine Jewelry was born. “Amelia Island is a great place to live and work,” says Grubner. “Getting to know the locals and visitors who stop by our store makes everyday something special.” Inside their Centre Street location, you’ll find a jewelry store a little out of the ordinary. “Unique, personal, and fun is our motto,” says Grubner. “Many one-of-a-kind pieces make our store unique, and our friendly staff offers personal service in a relaxed, island atmosphere.” Along with fine jewelry from all over the world, Amelia’s Fine Jewelry offers custom-designed jewelry, as well as redesign, repairs, or remounts to repurpose your well-loved favorites. Stop in to see the selection of estate jewelry they have discovered in their travels and through Gigi’s selective jewelry consignment. And, if you love Amelia Island as much as the Grubners do, check out their Amelia Island signature pendants, beads, bracelets, Larimar turtle pendants, and other sea life designs. For more information, call (904) 277-0665 or visit them on Facebook or at their website at www.ameliasfinejewelry.com.

compassionate care With warmhearted, personalized attention, Care Centers of Nassau provides vital services for the developmentally disabled. BY JULIE SIMMONS • PHOTO BY ELIZABETH WILKES

eet Ricky John, who turns 63 this year. He has been a resident at Care Centers of Nassau for 36 years. “Ricky is severely mentally-impaired,” says Dobbie, his 90-year-old dad. “This center is heaven-sent. As a youngster, Ricky was a danger to himself. If he saw a car driving by, he wanted to run out and hug it. My wife and I had to find a safe place for him, and somewhere that could provide the care he requires each day.” The 83 individuals being served by Care Centers of Nassau all share a similar story, with daily needs that their families do not have the physical or financial resources to provide them. Care Centers of Nassau is a state-funded, not-for-profit, licensed intermediate care facility, whose mission is to provide quality services to persons with developmental disabilities while maximizing their independence, promoting a positive selfimage, and reducing barriers. New this year is a brand-new facility off Old Nassauville Road, and it is truly amazing. As you walk the hallways of the day program building, the air is full of joy as residents smile and greet a visitor. “Hi Miss Fancy Nancy,” says five-day-aweek volunteer Ginny Burnet to a resident. Nancy, who loves the “Fancy Nancy” book series, was receiving personalized physical therapy and was thrilled to see Ginny, making her promise to return. Care Centers of Nassau is continually challenging itself to raise the standards of care for the developmentally disabled, and they are meeting that challenge with this wonderful new facility. The three shifts of staff, totaling over 130 direct-care workers, provide personalized care to each and every resident. For instance, the dining room is full of clients and caretakers dining in shifts in order that each person’s needs can be met. “What a lot of people don’t realize,” explains Executive Director Patrick Kennedy, “is that each person has dietary requirements, whether nutritional or in substance.” Dobbie says he visits Ricky on Sundays and enjoys bringing him cake, which has to be softened with milk for Ricky to swallow it. In Nassau County, there are three communities of residents, “We are really proud that each and every client has a personal bedroom and can decorate it as they wish,” says Patrick. “One client loves Alabama football, and his bedroom wall is Roll-Tide Crimson Red, just like he requested!” On

weekdays, residents from all locations attend the day-program on the new campus. As you tour the building, you pass room after room of activity. From sensory rooms and an outdoor porch area filled with gardening to art and wood-working space, training rooms where clients can practice laundry and cooking, and water therapy in the indoor saltwater pool, each individual is working with a caretaker to accomplish his or her next goal. Ginny enjoys volunteering and helping clients on vocational skills like paper-shredding, using touch-screen computers,

or counting money and making a budget. “Most people don’t realize this exists on Amelia Island,” says Ginny. “Our community should be proud that we support a facility like this. It’s amazing what the clients can do. We bowl, attend the circus, monster trucks, football games, and even Shrimp Festival!” “Care Centers of Nassau is their staff,” Dobbie stresses. “The work they do is not easy work, but they do the best they can with each client. If you show up on Saturday, you may see the shift-supervisor fishing in the pond with the clients; he’s just so good to them. Our family is full of gratitude for how they’ve helped Ricky for the past 36 years.” To learn more about Care Centers of Nassau or how to volunteer, visit www.ccnassau.org, email Patrick Kennedy at pkennedy@ ccnassau.org, or call (904) 261-5518.

School OF Running With the “road as the classroom and running as the teacher,” Marathon High is an innovative after-school program that is changing young lives. BY JULIE SIMMONS

“I

never, ever, thought that I would be able to run more than one mile, and today, I ran eight! Joining Marathon High has taught me a lot of discipline because you can’t just skip out when you don’t feel like doing it,” says student A.J. Diaz. “You have to stay on schedule and push through. Along the same lines, it has taught me dedication, determination, and perseverance. I think about why I’m doing this, and it keeps me going until I see the finish line. Marathon High has built bonds for me, and also given me a new sense of pride in myself.” With tears filling the corners of her eyes, Marathon High, Inc. founder Deborah Dunham exclaims, “Exactly!” When this Fernandina Beach resident founded her nonprofit program four years ago, that was exactly her mission: to provide an opportunity for any high school student— regardless of financial or athletic ability—to enjoy the rewards of participating in an after-school sport. “As my sons were approaching their teen years,” she remembers, “I ran across a similar group in California whose goal was to boost self-esteem and confidence through

running. ‘We need this on Amelia Island,’ I decided.” Deborah had observed that when children are young, lots of intramural athletic activities are available, but as high school approaches, unless you are a varsity athlete, the opportunities become limited. Deb’s web-browsing idea from 2011 has now matured into a program serving seventeen schools and over four hundred students in Duval, Nassau, and St. John’s counties —including Fernandina Beach and Yulee high schools—who are participating in their fourth season of Marathon High this year. The structure of the program is simple: each school has a sponsor and coaches who lead the students in short-distance runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays and long runs on Saturdays, all in training for the half-marathon event at the “26.2 with Donna” each February. The best part about Marathon High is that you don’t have to be fast or a great athlete to participate. “We want the students to learn that by hard work, they can do anything! continued on page 43.

Training for four months, this afterschool program allows high school students to develop athletic skills, social skills, self-respect, self-esteem, courage, strength, confidence, healthy lifestyles, and a positive direction,” says Deborah. Marathon High is about more than running a half-marathon. It’s about helping teens be the person they’re meant to be and challenging them to make the “impossible” possible. Marathon High proudly partners with the Galloway Training Program, which is a walk-and-run style of distance running. “The participants are placed in pace groups based on ability. More experienced runners run for four minutes and walk for one, while new runners run for one minute and walk for one. We remind them that anyone can do anything for a minute!” Deborah explains. Participants earn a jersey after the first month of attendance, a prized hoodie sweatshirt after the second month, and their race-entry to “26.2 with Donna” after the third month. Marathon High is funded through grants, as well as corporate and individual sponsorships. It costs $55 per student for the season and it is free to the participants, who are responsible to help with fundraising. “Half of what the participants raise goes to pay it forward for next year’s program, and the other half goes to The Donna Foundation for breast-cancer research and to fund the needs of under-served breast cancer patients,” Deborah explains. “It’s important to have the kids involved in the community service aspect to help them feel connected and learn about service at a young age.” For more information on participating in Marathon High as a coach or corporate or individual sponsor, visit www.marathonhighfl.org. “Being a part of Marathon High gives me a positive and confident attitude in every part of my life,” says participant Tessa Bohn-Carmichael. “I never thought that I would be cut out for any kind of running. It makes me believe that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to.”

pretty perennials With beautiful foliage and bright red flowers, the new Panama Red Hibiscus will retain its rich colors even in the heat of summer. BY BETTY MORRELL

M

arch is a great time of the year, with perennials popping though the ground, flowers beginning to bloom, and plans for the garden underway. Azaleas are an exception to that rule, as they have been blooming beautifully already, with a splendid array of colors, intermingled with later-blooming camellias. You might want to add the new Panama Red Hibiscus to your garden this year. It will grow about four feet high and two feet wide, and it is a remarkably beautiful plant. A new release on the 2015 Southern Living plant list, Panama Red retains its rich, carmine-red color through even the hottest days. Although it’s grown primarily for its colorful foliage, it also produces bright red flowers. Panama Red is an upright shrub with serrated leaves, an ideal centerpiece in a large planting pot or a sunny border bed. It could also be a specimen shrub. Panama Red does not require pruning, but dead-heading promotes new growth. Water it regularly and plant in well-drained soil. Fertilize monthly if it’s planted in a garden, or twice a month if it’s in a container.

TIP O F T HE M O N T H Now is the time to cut back your roses so they will fill out with the warm weather. Fertilize your plants and shrubs. Epsom salts is good addition for a rose bed, but don’t fertilize azaleas until they have finished blooming.

Another new release for 2015 is Lemon Zest Abelia. It is an outstanding abelia with bright, variegated foliage sporting yellow and green center leaves when young, then maturing to ivory and green. The name “Lemon Zest” intrigued me. It doesn’t smell like lemon zest, but the color is there. This wonderful shrub grows three feet in height and four feet in width. It produces a heavy bloom of light pink flowers during summer and fall, and it is hardy to ten degrees. Lemon Zest Abelia is a lowmaintenance shrub that can be planted in informal beds, borders, containers, along a wall or trellis, either in full sun or shade. The shrub requires regular watering and fertilization. Prune if desired, but it is not required.

Daylilies have been a long-time favorite of mine. They are plants that every gardener dreams about. They offer glorious flowers in every shade except blue. They have a long session of bloom, although individual flowers last but a day. Their robust disposition makes them easy to transplant, easy to maintain, quick to multiply, and resistant to pests. They are a carefree, colorful ground cover. A new, fragrant daylily is Lavender Tutu, a frosted, vintage ruffle that has bright, lavender blooms with soft yellow centers. It also has lavishly ruffled yellow centers. Tutu blooms mid-season with a repeat performance in late summer, accompanied by a wonderful fragrance. Happy Enchantment is another new daylily that blooms from June to September in full sun to part-shade, growing to almost two feet tall. This one is not fragrant, but it has lightly ruffled, rosy petals, detailed with dark pink, and is a lovely re-bloomer. As always, please email me at bamorrell@aol.com with any questions. And Happy Gardening!

he welcoming entrance of Donnalynne and Bruce Studley’s home immediately tells you that the couple enjoys the outside of their Amelia Island Plantation home as much as the inside. Careful detail is evident in the balanced landscaping that surrounds the house. The couple worked with a local landscaper to insure that they used appropriate Florida plants and shrubs. “Our outdoor space has always been an extension of our home,” shares Donnalynne. “Each space extends from one to the other along walkways, with seating and various water features.” Birdhouses are positioned by the front door and scattered throughout the property. Donnalynne and Bruce were given their first birdhouse as newlyweds, with a note

The Studleys have, indeed, explored the world, and they have incorporated many of the things they collected on their travels into their home. Once inside the front door, your eyes are drawn to the back of the house and its doorway to the backyard, with its gardens and collections of eye-catching treasures. The couple, originally

from Massachusetts, have lived many places, including a stint in Australia. Anticipating retirement, they purchased a condominium on Amelia Island and visited each year before finally buying the house that they immediately knew was “the one.” The many talents of the Studleys are evident throughout the house. A raised fireplace has bookcases on either side, which house some of the couple’s collections. There are also items from Mrs. Studley’s grandfather, who served in France during the war, including his

The kitchen is alive with black and white tin ware and ceramics from famed designers at MacKensie-Childs. Donnalynne bought her first piece while visiting friends, and through the years, the collection has grown to include a teapot, plates and other accessories. The dining room offers a small, intimate, elegantly designed space. The dining table and the blue glass collection displayed in two lighted corner cupboards belonged to Mrs. Studley’s grandmother. remembers her grandmother using it for her everyday dishes. The window treatment is a pair of finely detailed English stain glass windows. The delicate hand-painted wall paper with a hummingbird design is from Thibault, a company that has been making fabric and wallpaper since 1886. Donnalynne enjoyed a successful career with Lancome and she now enjoys her studio, where she creates handmade purses, paintings, and custom jewelry. The color she choose for her studio, which doubles as a guest room, is Valspar’s “Turbid Amethyst,” and the adjacent bathroom is a dramatic “Boysenberry Jam.” The colors were inspired by her collection of mouth-blown glass pieces collected from an artist in Maine. A cheerful set of teddy bears cozy up on a day bed in the studio. The teddy bear collection started with one bear given to Mrs. Studley’s mother. It was made from her parents’ first bedspread. The bear collection represents the fun and quirkiness of their four grandchildren. The master bedroom is a restful combination of colors highlighted by a favorite oversized photograph, which is framed so that it appears to be a window instead of a picture. A love seat in one corner is in pomegranate, a favorite color. The inside of the home in partnership with the outside. In their lovely home, the Studleys have created a charmed space that blends the inside and outside, all while incorporating many of the fascinating collections gathered on their travels.

Horizons RESTAURANT

With distinctive continental cuisine impeccably prepared, Horizons offers a variety of creative dishes that will please every palate. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

C

hef Courtney Thompson has been wowing diners for years with fresh, creative cuisine at her restaurant, Horizons. What I love about Horizons is Chef Thompson’s innovative approach to continental cuisine, while using the best ingredients and proper cooking techniques. Recently I had dinner with local artist Susi Sax, who had won our recent Amelia Islander Magazine’s “Where on Amelia?” photo contest. We were thrilled to be hosted at Horizons, and our dinner was top-notch. Our server started us out with a glass of wine. For Susi, Stemmari Chardonnay from Italy, a tart white wine with a pleasurable minerality, and, for me, Concho y Toro Gran Reserva Sauvignon Blanc, a light and crisp white from Chile.

There was homemade rosemary bread at the table, and rich honey butter to go with it. A divine starter! One of the things I appreciate about Horizons is that Susi and I wanted to split a salad and appetizer, and that’s okay with them. We ordered

Horizons Salad, mixed greens with dried cherries, bacon, pear tomatoes, and crumbled goat cheese. This is one of my favorite salads on Amelia Island, and the dressing is so yummy, with a hint of sweetness and a good balance of tart. We also shared a Stuffed Portobello with lump crabmeat and balsamic glaze. Here is where Chef Thompson does it right: she sautés the giant mushroom first until it is impeccably cooked, then bakes it with the crabmeat, and finally, she glazes it. It was perfectly tender, earthy, and delicious. Horizons was featuring several specials that evening, one of which was Duck Ravioli, my choice. Susi opted for Seared Tuna with sweet and sour slaw, asparagus, mashed potatoes, and ratatouille. She loved that the tuna was perfectly cooked, rare, the way she likes it, and that there were so many beautiful vegetables on the plate. Although this dish was served with a continental flair, it had all the splendid Asian flavors and was just delicious. The Duck Ravioli was an amazing dish, filled with tender bits of duck and wild mushrooms, served in a Marsala cream and butter sauce. This was quite a rich offering, and I had a plate to take home for lunch the next day. We enjoyed our entrees with a glass of Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon from Central Coast, California. Smooth and vibrant with rich berry flavors, this wine would be an easy pairing for lots of dishes; it is quite lovely. I tell all my friends they must order Horizons’ Dessert Soufflé—this evening’s was served with raspberry sauce. Chef Thompson suggested I try their chocolate Pecan Caramel Tart, and it was over-thetop delectable, served with Ramos Pinto Port Wine. What a rich and tasty way to end our gourmet meal at Horizons! From the best choices of meats to excellent seafood and vegetarian options, Horizons’ menu has something that will please even the most refined palates. All of their food is made completely to order and Chef Thompson can accommodate any dietary needs. They offer space for special dinners and events, and even provide off-site catering. Horizons is located at 4828 First Coast Highway. For more information, visit www.horizonsameliaisland.com.

Cross Creek dinner

GRILLED BOURBON GLAZED CHICKEN Ingredients 1/2 cup dark cane syrup 2 tbsp. soy sauce 2 tbsp. bourbon Vegetable oil Two small chickens, cut in half Salt and pepper STORY AND PHOTOS BY KAREN MILLER

R

ecently my friend Cindy and I visited the legendary Cross Creek, located in Hawthorne, Florida, the home of Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, who penned The Yearling in 1938. We planned the trip as an “immersion” weekend, where everything we did revolved around Rawlings and her body of work. We stayed at The Yearling Cabins, had dinner at The Yearling Restaurant,

Cross Creek belongs to the wind and the rain, to the sun and the seasons, to the cosmic secrecy of seed, and beyond all, to time.

– MARJORIE KINNAN RAWLINGS

toured Rawlings’s homestead, and paid our respects at her grave site. A visit to Cross Creek is like a walk back in time. My friend and I felt like we were experiencing rural Florida life exactly the way it existed in the 1930s. The cracker-style Rawlings house has been completely restored, and I was especially drawn to the writer’s kitchen, where Rawlings created gourmet dishes

using local produce, fish, and game from Cross Creek. She even wrote a cookbook featuring her specialty dishes called Cross Creek Cookery. And, after Cindy and I got home from our trip, I turned to Rawlings’ cookbook to plan a special Cross Creek dinner of my own, inspired by the writer’s love for food and entertaining. Rawlings raised her own chickens, so my main entrée consisted of grilled chicken with bourbon glaze, and I served the chickens with pilau (pronounced pur-loo), a Southern rice dish. Inspired by Rawlings’s beautiful citrus grove, I created a grapefruit and tangerine salad, which I served over spinach, and for dessert, her famous Sweet Potato Pone, a delicate custard dish. While at Cross Creek, I bought a bottle of dark berry wine from the nearby Island Grove Wine Company, which I served with our dinner. It was delightful. After dinner, my guests and I gathered in front of the fireplace, sipping our coffee and discussing Rawlings’s life and work. Warmed by the wine and the glowing embers, it felt like Marjorie was right there with us. In spirit, I think she was.

Turn them over and continue to cook for 20 to 30 minutes or until a thermometer inserted into the chicken reads 160 degrees. Flip chicken over and brush the skin with the bourbon glaze and cook for 3 to 5 minutes more. Serves four.
