ISLANDER

Amelia

The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is a three-day extravaganza that offers an unparalleled opportunity to see some of the finest automobiles ever produced.

Philip Kelly Deana Basile Kelly Publishers and Editors Tom Barrett Art Director Mark O’Day Advertising Sales

March is one of our favorite months on Amelia Island. With the arrival of March comes the much-anticipated exit of winter, which delivered longer stretches of cool temperatures this year than we’re used to, and the happy advent of spring. Spring brings color back into our gardens—and our cheeks—and marks the end of what our “In the Garden” columnist Berry Morrell likes to call the “armchair gardening” season. Now the plans hatched in our comfortable armchairs in January and February begin to come to life in our reborn gardens. Another sure sign of spring on Amelia Island is the annual return of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. Much has been written through the years about this spectacular show, affectionately known to car enthusiasts around the world as “The Amelia,” but Founder and Chairman Bill Warner and staff always manage to keep it fresh each year. In addition to the usual array of everything automotive—from seminars and social events to road rallies, an extraordinary auction, and a chance to test drive new models—this threeday extravaganza offers an unparalleled opportunity to see three hundred of the finest automobiles ever produced. Laid out on the fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia, these painstakingly restored classic cars represent almost every era of automobile production, including very early models, the great luxury cars of the 1930s, classic models from the 1950s and beyond, and even some of the best racing cars ever produced. The inclusion of racings cars and the stars of racing is one of the things that sets the Amelia Concours apart, and it reflects Warner’s love of racing and his years at Road and Track Magazine. This year’s honoree is the great racer Hans-Joachim Stuck, two-time winner of the Le Mans 24-Hour and 1985 World Sports Car Champion. In addition, Stuck’s famous Formula 1 Brabham Alfa Romeo has been flown in from Arese, Italy for the show. Also featured this year is Janis Joplin’s famous Porsche 356 C SC, part of a full class of Porche 356s, with its original Age of Aquarius paint job restored; the 1949 Buick Roadmaster convertible from the movie, Rain Man; and a rare Pegaso Z-102 from Spain. Hats off to Bill Warner and crew for putting together another spectacular Concours weekend. In addition, we look at the third annual Slide into Spring Music and Craft Beer Festival, a great event that raises money for local non-profits and is really getting noticed on the music festival scene; we feature Southside Elementary’s Carissa Bass, this year’s Teacher of the Year from the Nassau Education Foundation; we enjoy another one of Dickie Anderson’s “Great Homes of Fernandina;” and much more. See you around the island!

Concours d’Elegance March 11-13, 2016 BY KAREN MILLER

ow in its third decade, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is among the top automotive events in the world. Always held the second full weekend in March, “The Amelia” draws over three hundred rare vehicles from collections all around the world to The Golf Club of Amelia Island and The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island for a celebration of the automobile like no other. This year’s annual event will be held March 1113, with its centerpiece event scheduled for Sunday, March 13. The Amelia Island Concours has grown dramatically over the years, attracting thousands of people to the island. Along with the public display of automobiles, the Concours offers various seminars, social events, and auctions, rounding out a fabulous weekend of exceptional autos, their owners, and car enthusiasts from all over the world.

HANS-JOACHIM STUCK NAMED THE 2016 HONOREE Double Le Mans 24 Hour winner and 1985 World Sports Car Champion Hans-Joachim Stuck will succeed Sir Stirling Moss as the honoree for this year’s Concours d’Elegance. Stuck, a second-generation racer, is the son of Hans Stuck Sr., who raced for the vaunted Auto-Union team in the 1930s. With his father’s guidance, Stuck junior became one of the most successful and popular international road racing stars of the 1970s, ‘80s, and ‘90s. The triple Sebring 12 Hour winner also raced in Formula 1 and Formula 2, grand touring cars, Trans-Am and IMSA’s GTO championship, becoming a favorite with generations of American racing fans. In the early ‘90s, Stuck raced Porsche

HANS STUCK’S FORMULA 1 BRABHAM-ALFA ROMEO MAKES RARE APPEARANCE Alfa Romeo has confirmed it will send Stuck’s 1977 Watkins Glen Alfa Romeo-powered Brabham to Amelia from its museum in Arese, Italy as the centerpiece of the Cars of Hans Stuck Class for this year’s Concours. The Brabham BT45B is the car that Stuck put on the front row at Watkins Glen and gave over 100,000 fans at the 1977 Grand Prix of the United States a wild show of extraordinary car control in soaking conditions.

911 Turbos for the championship-winning Brumos Porsche IMSA SuperCar team. In 1986, Stuck’s second Sebring 12 Hour victory preceded his first Le Mans win by three months, making him one of those rare racers who won the 12 Hours and the 24 Hours in the same year. Stuck is one of just fourteen racers in the nine-decade history of Le Mans to win the 24 Hours in consecutive years. “BMW put our names on the doors of our cars, and Hans would get so sideways I could read his name –at 140 mph,” said Sam Posey, Amelia’s 2013 Honoree, who was Stuck’s BMW teammate and co-winner of the 1975 Sebring 12 Hours. “I swear I could hear yodeling coming from his car!”

Stuck qualified on the front row at Watkins Glen, bested only by reigning Formula 1 World Champion James Hunt. When the green flag fell, Stuck blasted through the fog and mist to lead the first fourteen laps, conducting a wet-weather master class for a field that included six drivers who would wear the World Champion’s mantle before a broken clutch cable forced him out. “I was at Watkins Glen in 1977 and have great memories of Stuck’s Brabham and the great sound of that 12-cylinder Alfa Romeo engine,” says Warner. “We’re honored that Alfa Romeo has sent this car from Italy to honor Hans Stuck.”

PEGASO HEADLINES CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE ON MARCH 13 On March 13, the Amelia Concours will feature the rare and exotic Spanish Pegaso marque. Pegaso is Spanish for Pegasus, the winged stallion. Pegasus’ mythological role was to deliver thunderbolts to Zeus. That’s appropriate, because that was the thunderous effect the stunning Pegaso Thrill coupe had on the 1953 Turin Auto Show, when the Spanish Touringbodied grand touring coupe made its public debut. “That such an elegant, advanced design could come from a marketing plan promoting plebian commercial vehicles is a testament to the genius, vision, and skill of Wifredo Ricart,” says Warner. “From

Janis Joplin’s Porsche 356 C SC

his arrival at Alfa Romeo in 1936, Ricart was Enzo Ferrari’s nemesis, finally displacing him and creating a fleet of advanced and remarkably complex grand prix and competition sports and touring cars. World War II halted Ricart’s leading edge designs for Alfa Romeo and saw him return to his native Spain.” The Pegaso Z-102 was practically a Grand Touring coupe on a Grand Prix chassis, exquisitely detailed, with a supercharged, four-cam 2.5 liter V-8 engine, a 5-speed constant mesh transaxle suspended by torsion bars, and one of the most elegant de Dion rear suspensions conceived. Built in immaculately clean workshops by apprentices untroubled by the realities of mass production or the pressure of a time clock, the Pegaso roadsters and coupes were the most exotic road toys for the hyper-rich in the mid-1950s. “Pegasos are technically extravagant cars,” says Warner. “It’s period Formula 1 technology for the road, wrapped in coachwork by the likes of Touring and Saoutchik. The Pegaso Z-102 did exactly what Ricart and the Spanish government wanted: it brought Spanish industry to the attention of the world.”

JANIS JOPLIN’S PORSCHE 356 C SC COMES TO THE AMELIA ISLAND CONCOURS The high tide of the Age of Aquarius broke on Janis Joplin’s 1968 Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet on October 4, 1970, and the spirit of that age will echo at this year’s Amelia Concours when Janis Joplin’s Porsche anchors the Porsche 356 class. Joplin bought it used in 1968 for $3,500. It’s the final version of the venerable “C” model, sold from 1964 through 1965, when the 911 arrived. It was the last gasp of the 356 species, the perfect finale in the Porsche 356’s long life. She loved it and used all 90 horsepower to good effect, blasting around Los Angeles and up and down the West Coast wearing the unmistakable paint applied by Dave Richards, one of her band’s roadies. Richards took nearly a month to complete what he entitled “The History of the Universe” on Joplin’s 356 C SC Cabriolet. Three days after a October 1, 1970 recording session, Joplin was found dead in her room at the Sunset Motor Hotel in Hollywood. Her 356 was still in the hotel parking lot. Joplin’s family inherited the Porsche. It was repainted, covering

Richard’s work, until two Denver-area women recreated, as faithfully as possible from period photos, the car’s late-1960s psychedelic-mural just as Joplin drove it. Joplin’s Porsche still wears an ESTES-ZIPPER license plate frame, from the famous dealership where Joplin purchased it. In 1995, her family loaned the Porsche to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. It remained there for nearly twenty years. “RAIN MAN” ROADSTER MAKES ITS DEBUT A late entry in the Post-War American Production class at this year’s Concours, the 1949 Buick convertible, one of two used to make the film Rain Man, will make its international Concours debut after a restoration by Wayne Carini of the Velocity Channel’s “Chasing Classic Cars” for Rain Man director Barry Levinson. The 1988 film tells the story of Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise), a self-involved car dealer in financial turmoil who learns that his estranged father has died and bequeathed his entire fortune to his older son, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), who is autistic. All that Cruise’s character inherits are his father’s prized rosebushes and the ‘49 Buick Roadmaster convertible. Raymond’s refusal to fly on any airline besides Qantas launches the brothers on a cross-country road trip in the Sequoia Cream Buick Roadmaster convertible with a red leather interior.

“The ‘49 is a Buick styling landmark,” says Warner. “The VentiPort – the ‘holes’ in the fenders – debuted with the 1949’s and with the ‘Sweep Spear,’ is still part of Buick’s design DNA. But what people will always remember best about the ‘49 is Rain Man. We’re very pleased to have one of Wayne’s (Carini) restorations on the field again.”

CONCEPTS BEYOND DETROIT Concept cars quicken the heartbeat of car enthusiasts everywhere! These amazing vehicles featuring technical innovation and advanced body designs spark the imagination, but also offer a glimpse into a future that might have been. Premier collector events showcase these rare and unique cars for the same reasons today – to inspire us to dream beyond the cars of today. While most of us think of the major manufacturers as producing and showcasing ideas of “what will be,” there is a rich and varied history of concept cars developed, promoted, and celebrated by independent companies and talented designers. In the 1940s and 1950s, many—if not more—concept cars were built outside of Detroit rather than inside. Designers envisioned a world of ambitious proportions, challenging themselves to build the cars that would conquer the roadways leading to tomorrow. This year, the Amelia Island Concours showcases some of the most ambitious, stylish, and avant-garde concept cars, all developed by companies and/or individuals outside of the major manufacturers in Detroit.

RM SOTHEBY’S AUCTION RETURNS SATURDAY

AMELIA ISLAND CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE’S CHARITABLE GIVING

Since 1999, RM Sotheby’s has held the esteemed role of the official auction house of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, presenting an incredible selection of the world’s most desirable automobiles at the prestigious Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island and setting a variety of auction benchmarks in the process. In 2015, RM Sotheby’s reached an incredible $60 million in sales, with an unprecedented 100 percent of all lots sold. The impressive result represented not only the highest total ever for a sale held during the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance week, but it also exceeded the combined tally of all other auctions held during the 2015 Amelia Island week, reaffirming RM Sotheby’s clear market leadership. The 2016 event is expected to build on this success, bringing another carefully curated roster of elegant coach-built classics, important sports and racing cars, and late model collectibles to market. The auction previews, open to the public, will be held March 10 and 11 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the lawn of The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. The auction will be held on March 12 at the resort from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., open to bidders, consignors, and qualified media only.

On July 1, 2015 the Earl B. Hadlow Center for Caring was the scene of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance’s annual charity donation for Community Hospice, their founding charity. Since 1996, Community Hospice has received over $2 million from the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Foundation. “The Amelia Concours’ dedication and commitment has been a transformative element in Community Hospice’s ability to serve the people of Jacksonville and North Florida,” said John Erstling, senior vice president of Community Engagement and Philanthropy. “We also presented the annual donation to the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society. We have donated over $100,000 to the Navy Marine Corps since 2003.” Other deserving charities include Spina Bifida of Jacksonville; Shop with Cops, Christmas charities run by the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office and the Fernandina Beach Police Departments to assist underprivileged children; and Micah’s Place, a certified domestic violence center serving Nassau County. For more information about the event schedule, tickets, and the cars featured at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance this year, visit www.ameliaconcours.org.

On January 30, an American Beach Day Celebration was held at the American Beach Community Center with a program entitled “Celebrating our Heritage,” which included the unveiling of a historic marker commemorating the first house built on American Beach. Located at 5466 Gregg Street, the house was built in 1935, the same year that American Beach was established when the Afro-American Life Insurance Company purchased thirty-three acres of land there with a 1,000-foot shoreline. The Masonry Vernacular home was built for the president of the company, Abraham Lincoln Lewis, by local African American ship builder William S. Rivers. Lewis, Florida’s first African American millionaire, built the first home on American Beach. The resort community attracted thousands of African American vacationers until 1964, when the passage of the Civil Rights Act desegregated beaches. Later that year, Hurricane Dora devastated the area, destroying homes and businesses. In the 1970s, Lewis’s granddaughter MaVynee Betsch lived in the house and fought to protect the community’s heritage. The American Beach Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, with the Lewis house listed as a contributing structure.

fter a decade in business, Sandra Baker-Hinton’s Amelia SanJon Gallery is still one of the most interesting and remarkable galleries in Fernandina Beach’s Historic District. The cornerstone of a charming and artistic neighborhood, Amelia SanJon Gallery is part of an area of downtown Fernandina Beach that features three galleries, a needlepoint shop, and two restaurants. Each of the galleries is independent, and all are run by working artists. Amelia SanJon Gallery had evolved through the years into a gallery which featured mostly hometown artists who created high-quality work. This year, the evolution continues as artist and owner Sandra has chosen to feature mostly her own art work, including paintings in acrylic and other water medias, fused glass, photography, and even jewelry. She paints in a variety of styles, from brightly colored abstract paintings to technically challenging representational pieces. Experimenting in materials and techniques is part of what keeps her work interesting to herself and to her customers. Baker-Hinton’s creative spirit led

her to develop a method of creating whimsical Sea Critter light catchers and ornaments from recycled glass. Like her colorful paintings, the glass pieces have a vital, spontaneous feel to them, fashioned not from pre-cut glass, but from broken pieces, carefully selected to create the desired effect. An avid photographer, BakerHinton is seldom caught without her camera, always ready to capture whatever might be part of her life, whether a fantastic sunrise or sunset, animals and butterflies she is fostering, or her beloved sea turtles. Her photographs tell a story about the subject, relying not on a complicated camera and PhotoShop, but on a well-trained artistic eye. With in-house framing, Sandra can offer reproductions of her most popular paintings and photographs to homeowners who rent their properties part-time and who want impressive looking art without the risk of hanging original work. The gallery is located at 218A Ash Street. Gallery hours are 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. seven days a week. For more information, call (904) 491-8040.

ick Nichols has jewelry in his blood. His family has owned and operated a jewelry store in Jacksonville since 1974, and Rick doesn’t remember a time when he wasn’t working in the jewelry business. He and his wife, Nadine, opened Nassau Jewelry Company at 1743 South 8th Street (formerly Nassau Diamond) in November 2015, after Rick had worked there as an independent jeweler for several years. The couple fell in love with Amelia Island and they were eager to work and live here full-time. After buying the store, they sold their home in St. Augustine and now call Amelia Island home. Nassau Jewelry Company is a boutique jewelry store, with a laid-back and approachable style. “We want to be your one-stop jewelry store,” says Rick. “We do everything here— we create our own designs and fabricate jewelry from scratch. But we also carry popular lines of jewelry and watches. Plus, we offer appraisals, repairs, cleaning and polishing, and we refurbish heirloom pieces.” Nadine has also been in the jewelry business for many years. “Rick and I work so well together,” says Nadine. “We have the same vision for our business. We love our customers, we love what we do, and we stand behind everything we sell.” Some of their most popular lines include Moog Paris watches, Kovel Collection, and a large selection of authenticated and certified shipwreck jewelry. Nassau Jewelry Company is open Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (904) 277-1993 or email rickjeweler@gmail.com.

Cottonways

fter a decade of rapid growth since their first store opened in Melbourne, Florida, Cottonways is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. “We expanded our online store immediately,” says owner and designer Jennifer McNeill. “Then in 2007, we expanded and relocated, and then opened our Fernandina Beach location in 2009. Our store was so successful that we opened Cottonways in St. Augustine, then in Vero Beach, and, in 2014, we opened our fifth store in Winter Park!” “The cotton gauze clothing you’ll find at Cottonways offers maintenance-free, comfortable fashions. The clothing is washer and dryer safe, pre-shrunk, and it doesn’t require any ironing,” says McNeill. “Our clothing line encompasses everything our customers are looking for, from resort wear to evening wear, with accessories like hand-painted bags and silk scarves, all unique, and all hand-chosen for our store.” Cottonways’ hand-painted clothing and bags are one-ofa-kind, created by talented artists. McNeill offers new cottons and linens in new styles, colors, and fashions to keep her inventory fresh and vibrant. “No matter how often you visit Cottonways, you’ll always find something you haven’t seen before,” says McNeill. “We love our clients in Fernandina! Our manager Constance Bradley and her great team have led the store to a new level. And we’ve just started a customer loyalty program to offer special discounts to our loyal shoppers!” For more information, visit Cottonways at 313 Centre Street, call (904) 261-0311, or visit their website at www.cottonways.com.

With a growing reputation for great live music, lots to do, and premium craft beer, the Slide into Spring Music & Craft Beer Festival returns this month. BY JULIE SIMMONS

I

t’s year number three, and the Slide into Spring Music & Craft Beer Festival is promising to raise the bar for great music, beer, and fun at Main Beach this month. “The first year it was a one-day event, and it has become so popular that it’s been expanded to a three-day, full weekend tradition,” explains Aaron Morgan, president of 8 Flags Playscapes, Inc., the local non-profit community organization that built the Pirate Playground and is now spearheading the Egans Creek Park expansion. The annual festival takes place March 18-20 this year. Proceeds from the event will benefit 8 Flags Playscapes and the Nassau Humane Society. Slide into Spring got started when Aaron and Jay Robertson, Fernandina Beach Parks & Recreation Manager, began brainstorming about how to bring live music to the outdoor venues of Fernandina Beach. “We came up with the festival idea, and I worked to form the Goin’ Coastal Music Series,” says Jay. This organization works with the City of Fernandina

Beach Parks & Recreation Department and dedicated local volunteers to bring great live music to Amelia Island in order raise money for various community nonprofit organizations. Only in its third year, the event is really starting to make waves on the music festival scene. “The headlining acts are huge in the music festival world, and some are world-renowned,” notes Aaron. “Music festival followers are coming from all over the country.” The musical line-up features Dirty Heads, Donavon Frankenreiter, G-Love and Special Sauce, Passafire, Sidereal, The Hip Aduction, The Trongone Band, Post Pluto, The Fritz, Chillakaya, Herd of Watts, Rusty Shine, and more. Goin’ Coastal has also made ticket prices affordable. “We want people to come, and we want to showcase our island,” says Jay. “Nobody is making money off of this—it’s all for the nonprofit organizations. Thanks to generous sponsorships from continued on page 70.

o you remember that one teacher who made a profound impact on your life? For Carissa Bass, that teacher was Mrs. Bowman. “It was because of her enthusiasm, dedication, and inspiration that I saw the value in teaching,” says Bass. Luckily for the students of Southside Elementary in Fernandina Beach, Bass followed in Mrs. Bowman’s footsteps. On Tuesday, January 26, Bass was named Nassau County Teacher of the Year at the second annual Nassau Education Foundation’s Teacher of the Year Gala, attended by over four hundred guests at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. The gala, with an Academy Award theme, recognized the fifteen Teachers of the Year for each school throughout the district and highlighted the five finalists. The evening’s festivities culminated with the announcement of Bass as Nassau County

Teacher of the Year and the announcement of $129,000 raised for the Foundation’s grants, which will be awarded to teachers across the county through mini-grants. Senator Aaron Bean, Master of Ceremonies and event Co-Chair, along with Superintendent John Ruis and Nassau County School Board Chair Donna Martin, presented each winner with a gift bag, filled with prizes donated by businesses and members of the community. In addition, Bass received a $1,000 check from the Foundation, a spa day at Magna’s Salon in downtown Fernandina Beach, and a weekend getaway at Emerald Grande in Destin, Fla. “Our inaugural event last year exceeded our every expectation. In its first year, the Foundation gave out over continued on page71.

G R E AT H O M E S O F F E R N A N D I N A

The Noble Hardee House BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTO BY JAN JOHANNES

W

ith a lovely sunburst detail in its gabled roof, the charming house on the corner of Alachua and North Fourth streets begs to tell you its history. The house is a twoand-a-half story frame Queen Anne-style structure, with distinctive ornamental shingles, two-story hexagonal bays, and an ornamental veranda. The original owner, African-American druggist and physician Dr. Percy N. Richardson, had a drug store at 18 North Fourth Street. Richardson and his wife, Lucy, purchased the lot in 1900 and built their home in 1902. The Richardson’s had lived in Fernandina many years before building their home. In an 1880 issue of the Florida Mirror (predecessor to the Fernandina News-Leader), an advertisement appeared for a nerve medicine sold by Dr. Richardson. The home had several other owners, including Everett Johns, who had been a sheriff in Bradford County. He took a job in Fernandina with his good friend, Sheriff Higginbotham. The Johns bought the property in 1905. When they moved into their new home on Alachua, the family included nine-monthold Charley. Tragedy struck when Johns was sent to the beach to check out reports of stolen fishing nets. When he did not return, a search party found his drowned body. It was widely thought he had been murdered because he was scheduled to be a key witness

in a federal trial the next day. Johns’ widow sold the house to Noble A. Hardee, and she moved back to Starke with her son. Little Charley Johns was heard from again in 1935, when he went to Tallahassee as a member of the Florida House of Representatives. Later he was elected to the State Senate. Johns was president of the Senate when then-Governor Daniel McCarthy died in 1953 and he completed his term, serving as Governor from 1953 to 1955. Noble Hardee then bought the Alachua Street house. Noble’s brothers, Ira and John, founded Standard Hardware (later Standard Marine Supply) in 1900. In a time when the shrimping industry was at its height, Standard Marine was a key in its success. They were the hardware store for Fernandina’s shrimping fleet. Noble Hardee owned the Firestone Tire Store and was a distributor for Atlantic Oil. Noble and his wife, Emma Love, had three sons born in Tennessee and two daughters born on Amelia Island. One son, Will Love Hardee, operated three shrimp boats at one time before moving to Brownsville, Texas to form the Seagarden Sales Company. Will donated the land for the Emma Love Hardee Elementary School and also sold the land where the Island Walk Shopping Center now stands. In 1957, one of the Hardee’s daughters, Katherine, inherited the house.

woodland wonderland Jack-in-the-Pulpit and Belle Blanche will add interest to your garden, while ground covers are perfect for filling spaces in the landscape or edging a bed. BY BETTY MORRELL

T

hey always say, “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” I think that lion came in February, but I think I see a lamb arriving soon! It will be so nice to see new color in our gardens’ flowers and shrubs this spring. Recently, I came across my old favorite woodland plant, Jack-in -thePulpit (Arisaema sikokianumk). This intriguing plant emerges from a knobby tuber and casts a special brand of magic over shade gardens. Its extraordinary greenish-white flowers have a clubshaped center called spadexls, surrounded by a hooded cowl called spathe, with an exotic, almost black-striped back. For an encore, the plant may produce densely packed spikes of red berries. This lovely Jack-in-the-Pulpit grows to eighteen inches and prospers in moderately rich, well-drained soil. It grows well with ferns and other woodland plants, and it is hardy for this area and maintenance-free. Another beautiful plant is the Belle Blanche (Datura metel), a fine variety of the Angel Trumpet, with lovely bluegreen leaves. This plant blooms early and grows rapidly, ultimately becoming

a shrub-like plant. It produces white four-inch up-facing blooms, creating a tropical mystique, with a sweet perfume, redolent of honeysuckle, which is especially strong at night. The large, trumpet-shaped flowers bloom from July to September. After flowering, long seed pods form. These seeds can be planted for another year’s beautiful display. Datura is a genus of over a dozen annual and perennial species well-known for centuries for its chemical properties. No parts of this plant are to be eaten. Ground covers are invaluable additions to any garden. These robust, self-spreading plants come in a range of colors and sizes. All can be relied upon to fill spaces in the garden, edge or define beds and borders, and suppress weeds. Some tolerate mild foot traffic and are

45 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • MARCH 2016

ideal for planting between stepping stones and along pathways. These plants require almost no maintenance and will spread on their own to form colorful mats. Lamium Purple Dragon, also called Dead Nettle, a somewhat alarming name, means that this amazing little plant is related to the stinging nettle, but this one doesn’t sting. These short plants, are six-to-ten inches high when grown and add glistening sheets of color. They cover the ground so well that they smother invasive weeds. Another great ground cover is Thyme (Thymus alba), a mat-forming evergreen with small, aromatic, dark green leaves and tiny white flowers in summer. It can be planted between stones or in paths. When stepped on, it releases a pleasant scent, which can make you want to pick some and cook with it! It blooms in spring and summer, and likes full sun. Cut it back by one-third in spring, always cutting above any new growth. If you have any questions, you can email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

im and Mike Pertsch led very busy lives in Atlanta, where he was the long-time president of Martin Marietta and she was director of catering for the Atlanta Athletic Club for twenty years. The busy pair considered several places as their retirement home before choosing Amelia Island. They loved Sanibel and they had spent time in Hilton Head, but Kim fell in love with Amelia Island on a single visit and quickly decided that “this is where I want to spend the rest of my life.”

Timing is everything, and, as it happened, a perfect cottage-style home had just been completed by builder Ted Kostich of KDI Homes. The local builder prides himself on his well-designed and well-built homes, which offer many of the latest innovations that meet Energy Star criteria. and cooling a home is significantly more efficient and creates a smaller carbon footprint. Kim says it was a dream-come-true to find “a home we could just move into and not have to replace, renovate, upgrade or anything. It was small, quiet, and beautiful.” The couple were not looking specifically for a home designed for energy efficiency, but they are glad they were lucky enough to find a state-of-the-art home. For the couple, furnishing the house turned into a wonderful process, which included help from a number of Amelia Island resources. Determined to shop local, Kim and Mike were especially complimentary 48 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • MARCH 2016

of Julie Newton, Laura Lott of Lott’s Furniture, and Wilson Tennille of The Plantation Shop. Tucked under a canopy of live oaks in Amelia Island Plantation, the Pertsch home is inviting. An unusual dramatic hallway leads to the center of the house, the home’s heart. The hallway is highlighted by a series of pictures portraying the four seasons. The hall space is perfect for the oversized artwork. The center of house is a generous living/family room, which opens onto a dining room, kitchen, the master bedroom, and two porches. Decor throughout the house is designed to reflect

the island’s natural colors and seaside details. A cabinet is full of collected shells and beach treasures. Unusual detailing in the kitchen cupboards adds an interesting design element in the Arctic white kitchen. Since the room opens onto the living/family room, it allows those in the kitchen to share easily in family activities. Positioned on a small but very private lot, the landscaping is natural and designed for minimal maintenance. Rather than lawn, the landscaping employs a wide variety of regional plantings, including seventeen camellia plants. The couple

Café Karibo Located in the Historic District, Café Karibo offers a wonderfully eclectic menu with fresh seafood, home-brewed beer, sangria, and a full bar. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

C

afé Karibo, located inside a charming historic building in downtown Fernandina Beach, offers eclectic and affordable cuisine. I met my friends, Jane and Doug Bailey, for dinner at Café Karibo recently, and it was reminiscent of the “good ol’ days.” Jane and Doug worked at the restaurant when it first opened, helping out owners Theresa and Tim Poynter, who are also their friends and neighbors. Many years later, Jane and Doug still have fond memories of those days, and how delightful it is to see how the restaurant has prospered. Our server Gia brought us some drinks while we perused the menu – for Doug, a Sea Breeze cocktail, made with vodka, cranberry, and grapefruit juice, and for Jane and me, a 2012 St. Francis chardonnay. This chardonnay has a creamy texture with a strong, lingering finish, and just a touch of oak. We began our meal with Seared Blackened Ahi Tuna, nested in a wonton basket of Asian slaw, sashimi vinaigrette, and tropical salsa. This is a beautiful, delicious, and healthy dish. The tuna, served rare, was extremely fresh and paired well with the crispy, slightly sweet slaw and salsa. We also shared Bam Bam Shrimp, one of my favorite appetizers at Café Karibo. The shrimp is fried, deglazed in ginger Sriracha vinaigrette, and served over shaved romaine with sun-dried cranberries. For our entrees, we shared Coquille St. Jacques, pan-seared scallops served in a wonton cup with shitake cream sauce. This dish is Jane’s favorite, and I’m glad she recommended it. The scallops were perfectly seared and so sweet and tender, and the sauce was earthy and rich. We also shared Pan-Seared Beef Medallions, topped with scallion and lump crabmeat with tarragon cream sauce. The beef was nicely seared and served medium rare, and the crabmeat with sauce was luscious. Jane and I also sampled another white wine, Upper Cut Sauvignon Blanc. This wine was quite light-bodied and dry, but with a trace of sweetness from melon and pineapple.

One of my favorite items at Café Karibo is their Strawberry Cake, but I decided to step outside of my comfort zone and order their Guava Cake with Cream Cheese Icing, served with pomegranate raspberry sauce and whipped cream. This cake is so moist and rich, and it was very satisfying after our savory dinner, especially when shared with friends. Café Karibo’s desserts are made from scratch and change daily, so there’s always a surprise sweet waiting for you at the end of your meal! One of the things I love about Café Karibo is their flexibility with every dish. Sometimes I want fruit instead of fries or something else, and they are always willing to accommodate diet restrictions. Their Sunday brunch is amazing, with specialties like Crabby Eggs Benedict and Honey Glazed Salmon. They also sell their salads by the pound to take home, and make some of the best soups on the island. And they now have a full bar, in addition to their Karibrew house-brewed beers and superb sangria. Café Karibo’s private upstairs dining room can accommodate any event, including rehearsal dinners, holiday parties, corporate functions, and meetings. For more information, call (904) 277-5269 or visit www.cafekaribo.com. They are located at 27 North 3rd Street.

The craft beer part of the festival also is very popular, with its showcase of dozens of craft beers from around the country on Saturday from 12-3 p.m. “Pours of Paws offers festival goers a chance to sample the offerings for $1 per pour, all of which benefits the Nassau Humane Society,” Jay explains. “We love this event because it is such fun for our community, and it brings people to beautiful Amelia Island,” says Tom Christenson, executive director of the Nassau Humane Society. “Slide into Spring is a great partnership between Fernandina Beach Parks & Recreation, 8 Flags Playscapes, and us.” Community is what is what makes this festival a success. “It’s a volunteer event, where the community comes together not just for the fun but to produce a fundraiser that earned over $40,000 for 8 Flags Playscapes last year and will help to remake Egan’s Creek Park this year,” says Aaron. He encourages the people of Amelia Island to get involved. Visit http://vols.pt/ NTjFYU if you are interested in helping with setup/breakdown, security, tickets, or beer pours. All volunteers receive free admission to the festival. So come out to the Slide into Spring Festival this month and help create quality play time for our kids by raising money to build playgrounds in our community.

Teacher from page 37. $114,000 in grants,” says Abby Bean, Foundation board president. The Foundation provided grants from elementary through adult education. The grants ran the gamut from STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and career/technical training to art, history, literacy and special education. “It is exciting and aweinspiring to see what our teachers accomplish with the grants, but most importantly, it is rewarding to see the outcomes from the grants,” says Bean. “Our students are truly the winners.” Bass graduated from Fernandina Beach High School and obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in education from the University of North Florida. She has been a teacher at Southside Elementary since 2006, where she mentors new teachers, has chaired the technology committee since 2007, and most recently, designed the school’s 3D Tech Club. “It is humbling to be nominated by your peers, especially for doing what you love to do. I hope to inspire other educators to be a source of inspiration for their students, to encourage other teachers to embrace new teaching strategies, and to promote a love for teaching and student growth,” says Bass. “Nassau County is blessed with amazing educators.” In addition to Ms. Bass, this year’s Teachers of the Year Finalists were: Susan Cacciapouti of Yulee Primary School; Valerie Snyder of Fernandina Beach High School; Renee Thompson of Fernandina Beach Middle School, and Veronica Williams of Yulee High School. The additional ten school Teachers of the Year are: Dana Crump of Hilliard Elementary School; JeanneLouise Elliott of Yulee Elementary School; Cyndi LiCausi of Emma Love Elementary School; Dr. Nancy Moore of West Nassau High School; Kristen Ray of Hilliard Middle School; Megan Salvatore of Callahan Elementary School; Pam Smith of Bryceville Elementary School; Denise Spivey of Callahan Middle School; Miranda Thompson of Callahan Intermediate School; and Melissa Tremblay of Yulee Middle School.

marine mammals. I once saw a right whale many years ago off the beach on Amelia Island. Little did I know how rare a right whale sighting really was. Ranger Stinson explained that there are only 300 to 350 North Atlantic right whales left in Atlantic waters, and that number is diminishing. Reasons for the decline include an increase in collisions with shipping and threats from fishing gear and gill nets, which entangle the whales. Although killer whales and great white sharks are their only natural predators, they rarely attack a right whale unless it is sick or injured. North Atlantic right whales spend most of their time in New England waters, but they migrate to the Florida and Georgia coasts for better feeding conditions. Between December and March, the whales come to our waters with their calves, some calving on their way, or giving birth to their calves when they arrive. If you are fortunate enough to see a right whale this time of year, you may be able to see its calf as well. The babies stay with their mothers for a year before they learn to eat on their own. Using baleen to filter food from the water, right whales live on a diet of krill and other tiny aquatic creatures. They grow up to 55 feet long and weigh up to 70 tons as adults. Ranger Stinson showed us a Power Point presentation that included amazing photographs of the whales and their calves. To demonstrate how large these Ranger Brian Stinson of Talbot Islands State Parks gentle giants can grow, Stinson showed holds the rib bone of a right whale. The rib bone washed ashore near Amelia Island a few years ago. us a rib bone from a right whale that had washed up on shore several years ago, along with an atlas vertebrae. “One of the things you can do,” said Stinson, “is keep your eyes open explaining and interpreting the area’s natural and cultural for right whales and report sightings to 1-888-97-WHALE resources. Subjects include nature photography, nature hiking, or 1-888-404-FWCC. This helps us track their numbers and campfire stories, sea turtles, and more. I was interested in a see how the whales are doing. You can also visit the NOAA program about North Atlantic right whales by Ranger Brian Tracking website. So far, ten to fifteen right whales have been Stinson at the Ribault Club’s Fort George Island Visitor Center, spotted this year.” and I invited my friend Sherry to join me. id you know there are seven parks which collectively comprise the group we know as Talbot Islands State Parks? Just minutes away at the south end of Amelia Island, they offer a premier location for nature study, bird-watching, and photography, along with hiking, biking, swimming, kayaking, and beach combing. The parks include Pumpkin Hill Creek Preserve State Park, Amelia Island State Park, Little Talbot Island State Park, Fort George Island Cultural State Park, Yellow Bluff Historic State Park, and George Crady Bridge Fishing Pier State Park. They are run by dedicated rangers and volunteers. Each Saturday, a ranger program is conducted at one of the parks. The rangers choose their own subjects each week,
