Amelia

The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is a three-day extravaganza that offers an unmatched opportunity to see three hundred of the world’s finest automobiles.

ISLANDER Philip Kelly Deana Basile Kelly Publishers and Editors Tom Barrett Art Director Mark O’Day Advertising Sales

It’s not too much of a stretch to say that March is a magical month on Amelia Island. As the warm weather moves in, followed quickly by azalea blooms and a variety of spring perennials, we say farewell to winter and turn our minds to thoughts of warmer temperatures. As our hearts stir from their winter slumber, our gardens stir as well, bringing the “armchair gardening “ season to a close and sending us out to dig in the dirt. Plans hatched in our comfortable armchairs when the weather is cool begin to come to life in our rejuvenated gardens. Like the swallows returning to San Juan Capistrano, another welcome harbinger of spring is the annual return of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. “The Amelia,” as it is affectionately known, was named the 2013 Motoring Event of the Year at the prestigious International Historic Motoring Awards in London, and it was recently awarded the top prize again this year for an unprecedented second time in four years. Its reputation is well-deserved. Whether you’re traveling across the country or around the world, when you mention Amelia Island, car lovers of all ages and types take notice. Renowned for its astounding gathering of famed race cars each year, as well as appearances by the legendary racers who drove them, this event has come to be known as the “Racers’ Concours.” This year’s honoree is the great racing champion Al Unser Sr., 4-time winner of the Indy 500. In addition to the usual array of everything automotive—from seminars and social events to road rallies, an extraordinary auction, and a chance to test drive new models—this three-day extravaganza offers an unmatched opportunity to see three hundred of the world’s finest automobiles. Founder and Chairman Bill Warner and staff always keep it fresh, with something for everyone: for those who love the designs of the past, there are rows of pristinely restored antique cars; for those who look more to the future, you’ll find new models and concept cars. We look forward to all those beautiful cars gracing our roads that weekend, as the island is swept up in Concours fever. In addition, we want to acknowledge the magnificent charitable work made possible by the proceeds from the Amelia Concours, with over $3 million donated to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida and other local charities through the years. Also this month, we look at the recently formed Bartram Garden Club; enjoy a “Fernandina Faces” profile by Dickie Anderson; learn about a group on the island dedicated to promoting a better understanding of the U.S. Constitution; take a Backyard Adventure to the Talbot Islands; and much more. See you around the island!

ill Warner is often asked when his interest in automobiles and racing began. “To be honest, I can’t remember when I first became enamored with all things automotive, but the thread that goes back as a real defining moment in my life was when, at the encouragement of my older sister, my parents gave me a camera for Christmas,” says Warner. “It wasn’t really high quality, but for a young man of 16, it was sufficient. I really did not start out to be a photographer, but used the camera to record automotive moments in my life—chasing prototypes, shooting race cars at such venues as Daytona, Sebring, and Dunnellon, and just photographing interesting cars.” Warner, founder and co-chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, was an antique car collector and a writer/

photographer at Road and Track Magazine, who together with Patti Hendrix of The Ritz Carlton, Amelia Island, produced the first Amelia Concours event in 1996. Since then it has grown dramatically, attracting tens of thousands of people to the island. Along with the public display of automobiles, the Concours also offers assorted seminars, social events, and auctions, creating an unforgettable weekend of exceptional autos, their owners, and car enthusiasts from all over the world. Now in its third decade, The Amelia is among the top automotive events in the world. Always held the second full weekend in March, it draws rare vehicles from collections all over the world to the Golf Club of Amelia Island and The RitzCarlton, Amelia Island for a celebration of the automobile like

no other. The annual event returns March 10, 11, and 12 on the 10th and 18th fairways of the Golf Club, where golf carts are replaced by high-style autos and their enthusiastic owners. “When someone pointed out that the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance had entered its third decade last March, time seemed to slow for a moment,” says Warner. “We usually don’t have time to think about things like that. I suppose time does fly when you’re having fun. And we are. “Someone actually called The Amelia ‘The Fun Concours,’ and we keep that in mind as we compose the classes, plan the schedule, and lay out the field. The whole thing begins to gather momentum when we name an honoree. That gives The Amelia a face. Then comes the creation of the poster and sourcing the cars of the honoree. For us, that’s like a kid making the ultimate Christmas wish list!”

AL UNSER SR. NAMED 2017 HONOREE Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser, Sr. has been named the honoree for the 22nd annual Amelia Concours.

Unser’s Indianapolis 500 stats alone are as extraordinary as his remarkable versatility. Three decades ago, he became one of just three racers to win the Indy 500 four times, and he is the only Indy winner to have both a brother and a son who are Indy 500 winners. “Big Al” has led the most Indy 500 laps in history (644), tying 1915 Indy 500 winner Ralph DePalma’s long standing record (612 Indy 500 laps led) on the final lap of his fourth victory in 1987. On that same day Unser, Sr. became the oldest Indy 500 winner (just five days short of his 48th birthday) breaking his older brother Bobby’s record with a yearold March-Cosworth that had been displayed in the lobby of a hotel in Reading, Pennsylvania just weeks earlier. An accomplished road racer, Unser won the 1985 Rolex 24 at Daytona with A.J. Foyt, Bob Wolleck, and Thierry Boutsen. Naturally he shares the Unser family’s genetic predisposition for winning multiple Pikes Peak Hillclimbs (1964 and ‘65). He had to beat brother Bobby for his first Pike Peak win in 1964, and he set a record in the process. From superspeedways to dirt tracks, road courses to hillclimbs,

racing sprinters, prototypes, Indy Cars, sports cars, Formula 5000, Can-Am, and even NASCAR stockers, Unser was fast and very much at home. “The 100th running of the Indy 500 has made us even more nostalgic than usual,” says Warner. “When we started to think about an honoree for 2017, Big Al seemed like the perfect choice. We were very flattered when he agreed to join us.”

PORSCHE DRIVING EXPERIENCE HIGH SPEED RUNS WITH HURLEY HAYWOOD RETURN TO THE AMELIA The popular Porsche Driving Experience returns on Friday, March 10th as part of the Concours weekend. Also returning are the high speed runs with Le Mans and Daytona winner Hurley Haywood. Ron Davis, Porsche Driving Experience Rally Master explains: “Last year, the Department of Defense performed construction work on NAS JAX. That prevented us from conducting the high speed runs on the NAS Mayport runways. This year, the runway updates are complete and

Porsche speed is back!” In addition to the high performance, high speed driving exercises, the 2017 Amelia Concours Porsche Driving Experience will also visit two private local car collections, with a guided tour of each. The event begins at 7 a.m. at the Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport and costs $250 for two people in one car. Additional participants per car may be added for $125 each. All tickets are nonrefundable. A driver and a navigator with minimum ages of 21 are required. Any legally licensed roadworthy passenger vehicle may apply for entry. Porsche ownership is not required. Due to the early assembly hour, complimentary coffee and donuts will be served.

FAMOUS MOVIE CARS STAR AT CONCOURS While the Grand Classics are always well represented, it is the unique and iconoclastic special classes that have helped the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance earn the unofficial title of “The People’s Concours.” On March 12, a full class of famous movie cars will trigger memories of sitting in a dark movie

theater, or, better yet, a drive-in, daydreaming about a famous, or, perhaps infamous, movie car. Nine cars made famous by feature films from 1964 through 1988 will trigger plenty of nostalgia at The Amelia. It’s an all-star cast, including James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger (1964); the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow Two-Door Sedan and Ferrari 275 GTB/4 Nart Spyder from Steve McQueen’s Thomas Crown Affair (1968); Steve McQueen’s Porsche Gulf 917K from Le Mans (1971); the Corvette Stingray prototype showcased in Elvis Presley’s Clambake (1967); the Woodill Wildfire from Johnny Dark starring Tony Curtis (1954); the 1958 Chevrolet Impala that appeared in American Graffiti (1973); the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider from Gumball Rally (1976); and the 1924 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost Riviera Salamanca used in Sabrina (1954). Of course, the list wouldn’t be complete without the 1949 Buick Roadmaster convertible that practically starred in the multi-Academy Award-winning Rain Man of 1988. “Great cars and special movies are among the most evocative and enduring elements of modern American life and culture,” says Warner. “When Wayne Carini brought the 1949 Rain Man

Buick Roadmaster to Amelia last year, it triggered something important. Memories of special cars and movies often frame the central moments of our emotional lives. Usually, they resurrect happy memories. Those feelings and memories are precisely what we’re shooting for with the Movie Cars class.”

AMELIA CONCOURS HONORS THE CARS OF BRUMOS RACING: “MADE IN JACKSONVILLE” On March 12, The Amelia will feature a special class to showcase and honor the Cars of Brumos Racing. From its founding on September 1, 1959, Brumos Porsche Car Corp (later Brumos Porsche) represented the legendary Stuttgart marque in North America, winning 15 major championships, plus the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring multiple times. On April 1, 2016, the world famous Brumos name, a contraction of “Brundage Motors,” concluded operations as retail automobile dealerships. Brumos Porsche Dealer Principal Dan Davis retained the legendary name and the cars of the Jacksonville-based Brumos Collection.

“This is a meaningful way to salute Peter, Hurley, Jack Atkinson, and Bob Snodgrass, as well as all the drivers and crew members who made Brumos #59 so successful in racing through seven decades,” says Davis, “I’m honored to have been part of Brumos for the last 25 years and appreciate the effort and dedication of our people who support Brumos racing.” New headquarters for the Brumos Collection will open in Jacksonville this year. The purpose-built museum will house the vast collection of memorabilia and many of the cars that will be featured at The Amelia, including Brumos’ first IMSA GT Champion, Trans-Am Champion 911, Can-Am Porsche 917 Turbo, Turbo 935 IMSA GT Champion, and many more, such as the cars raced by Brumos’ own and 1998 Amelia Honoree Hurley Haywood, Peter Gregg, Al Unser, Sr, A.J. Foyt, and Le Mans winner Hans Stuck, plus a fleet of famous racing Porsche from the 1970s through today. “For many of us, Brumos’ red and blue stripes are the colors of our home town team,” says Warner. “Like Gulf’s immortal blue and orange, and Martini Racing’s stripes, Brumos’ iconic white-red-and-blue livery is instantly recognizable to millions of sports car fans around the world.”

HOMECOMING FOR AN ITALIAN WORLD CHAMPION A world championship endurance racer will make its international Concours debut, a championship quest begun in Florida 36 years ago. The 24 Hours of Daytona -- the Rolex 24—is a harsh and unforgiving place to begin a world championship quest. Points earned there are hard won during Daytona’s long night and sometimes freezing temperatures. There were no points at Daytona in 1981 after the Martiniliveried Lancia engine dropped a valve near midnight. But that summer, on World Championship sports car racing’s biggest and most glamorous stage, John Campion’s Lancia Beta Montecarlo shone brightly after a trying competition debut at in the 1981 Rolex 24. Just after 4 p.m. on June 14,1981 Lancia Beta Montecarlo number 65 stepped into the spotlight, winning the Group 5 category of the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a superb eighth overall finish. Driven by Eddie Cheever, Michele Alboreto, and Carlo Facetti, that victory kept Lancia’s hopes of a repeat World Championship alive. Less than a month after Le Mans, Lancia Corsa returned to the scene of their first world title in 1980 and

won the Six Hours of Watkins Glen and a second consecutive World Championship. “When we coax a significant racing car out of a private museum, we believe we’ve added something valuable and important to The Amelia experience,” says Warner. “When we can present a car with World Championship provenance and pedigree, something that would rarely if ever be seen in public—a Le Mans winner still wearing its race number—we’re honored to have it on the field.”

AMELIA CONCOURS WINS WORLDWIDE AWARD For an unprecedented second time in just four years, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance has won Octane Magazine’s EFG International Historic Motoring Award for the Best Motoring Event of the Year. The award was presented in special ceremonies in Guildhall, London, England on November 17, 2016. As the only American event nominated for the prestigious international award, The Amelia faced strong international competition from the Concours of Elegance at Windsor Castle (England), Chantilly Arts & Elegance (Paris),

Concorso d’Eleganza Ville D’Este (Italy), Regent Street Motor Show (London), and the Rømø Motor Festival (Denmark). “Just being nominated for the IHMA is an extraordinary honor,” says Warner. “To be nominated every year of the award’s existence has been overwhelming. This year, we were the only American nominee in the category. When we won the IHMA in 2013, we were very pleased, especially considering the quality, depth, and reputations of the finalists. We can only say a sincere ‘thank you’ again to the awards committee and our staff, and especially to our volunteers. It’s their selfless dedication that makes ‘The Amelia’ and both our IHMA awards possible. They never cease to amaze us with their helpfulness, charity, and selflessness.” Since 1996 the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Foundation has donated over $3 million to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Spina Bifida of Jacksonville, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, Shop with Cops, and Micah’s Place. ERIK WEIHENMAYER RELEASES HIS NEW BOOK, NO BARRIERS Erik Weihenmayer, author, film producer, acclaimed international speaker, and the most prominent blind athlete in the world, has released his new book, No Barriers. Well-known on Amelia Island, Weihenmayer has spoken at the Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fernandina Beach High School, and at corporate conferences at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. He has also dedicated the grounds for the Boys & Girls Club, premiered one of his films at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort, and he is being considered as a speaker for the Florida Forum. No Barriers is a moving story of his life journey, from climbing Mt. Everest to kayaking the Grand Canyon, and of the teammates who helped him along the way. “No Barriers is about my journey since coming down from Mt. Everest in 2001,” says Weihenmayer. “It is the story of my own life, the personal and professional struggles in the pursuit of growth, learning, and family, as well as a dream to kayak one of the world’s great rivers as a blind athlete.” Erik’s father, Ed Weihenmayer, is an Amelia Island resident and president of the Amelia Plantation Chapel. AMELIA ISLAND VINTAGE GRAN PRIX RACE RETURNS MARCH 16-19 The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association’s Amelia Island Vintage Gran Prix race weekend returns to Fernandina Beach Airport just days after the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. With its emphasis on race cars and racing history, the Amelia Island Concours has gained a huge following among racers, racing legends, and race car owners, and the SVRA Vintage Gran Prix adds another weekend of excitement and prestige for fans of auto racing. The event returns to Amelia Island March 16 through Mar 19. Bill Warner, founder and chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance and the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Foundation, has raced with SVRA since it was founded in 1981. The Amelia Island Vintage Gran Prix pays homage to the 1960s sports car races which took place at the Fernandina Beach Airport. Plans have been finalized for a 2 plusmile airport road course. Invited groups of race cars for this event includes pre-war cars, sports cars, and road racing specials up to 1980. Gold medallion cars are invited and will enjoy separate podiums, along with a unique racing experience. Three dozen vintage motorcycles will take to the track during the weekend for spirited vintage bike racing action. For more information, visit www.svra.com.

CUMMER AMELIA PRESENTS THIRD ANNUAL GARDEN WALK ON APRIL 7 On Friday, April 7, Cummer Amelia hosts its third annual Garden Walk at Amelia Island Plantation from 1 to 4 p.m. An affinity group for the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens in Jacksonville, Cummer Amelia supports the museum’s programs and brings awareness of fine art to the people of Nassau County. Cummer Amelia sponsors programs about the arts, gardening, special exhibits, and various activities at the Cummer. The main project of Cummer Amelia is to raise funds to send all third graders in Nassau County to the Cummer for a special day of art enrichment. For most of the children, it is their first introduction to fine art, formal gardens, and museums in general. The Garden Walk begins with a tour and talk by Omni Amelia Island Planation Resort chef Daven Wardynski at the resort’s Hydroponic Greenhouse. Four Amelia Island Plantation homeowners are opening their homes to allow visitors to tour their gardens. Special events will be held at each home. A Master Gardener will be on site at each home to answer questions about gardening in Florida. The cost is $20 for Cummer members and $30 for non-members. For more information, call Wendy Mayle at (904) 899-6007 or email wmayle@cummermuseum.org.

inner of Nikon/Popular Photograhy’s 2008 International Mentor Series, Grand Prize, and First Place in Photography at the 2014 Shrimp Festival, professional fine art wildlife photographer, portrait photographer, and teacher Steve Leimberg seeks out the beauty in what is unseen or passed by. His web site, www.UnSeenImages. com, demonstrates the wide scope of his travels and the depth of his work. There are three special galleries: one with portraits of the people of American Beach; a second featuring the cars of the Concours d’ Elegance; and a third called “People,” where you’ll recognize many Amelia Island actors, musicians, and local characters, as well as Steve’s intimate portraits of nationally known people such as Pat Conroy. “My web site gallery is a place designed to share beauty,” says Leimberg. “Both real and imagined, incredible moments are missed unless you slow down, stop, and look a little more closely —and with different eyes—at the intense color, texture, lines, and shapes of those images that maybe others haven’t noticed.” Leimberg’s insatiable desire to “image”

people, places, and objects is ironic, since he has a learning disability that prevents him from creating or recalling images in his mind. When he closes his eyes, the world goes black; he cannot see an image. “Photography brings those images back,” says Leimberg. “It also opens the door to fascinating people I never would have met and places I never would have seen.” A strong supporter of Wild Amelia and the Amelia Tree Conservancy, Leimberg is passionate about preserving the unique environment of Amelia Island, using photography to make people appreciate what sets Amelia Island apart. “My fine art nature photography is a way of saying all this beauty is in danger and will be lost if we don’t act to save it!” Steve recently teamed up with Dawna and Scott Moore to produce “A Day on Amelia,” a sun-up-to-sunset “book in a bag” photographic exploration of Amelia Island. His fine art work can be viewed and purchased by appointment at his private studio. He also accepts commissions for portraits. J COOPER is a new premier men’s store located at 216 Centre Street in historic downtown Fernandina Beach. The concept for the store developed through a friendship between like-minded people with a common vision and a goal to fill the niche for a menswear store in the Historic District. John and Lori “Cooper” Lecker, owners of lori+lulu and Pearl, joined forces with Jake and Betsy Michaelis to explore the possibility. “The more we talked about the store, the more we discovered that we all had the same ideas,” says Lori. “We then formed a partnership and collaborated on store design and clothing lines. The image of the store and the clothing has a refined, relaxed, resort feel in an Americana setting, with beautiful natural elements of reclaimed wood, copper, and retro lighting. It’s everything we imagined and more!” The two couples found their inspiration visiting boutiques in Austin, Atlanta, and Charleston, and turning them into reality was a team effort. “At the Vegas market, we set out to capture the multigenerational audience who lives and visits Amelia Island,” says Lori. “Our goal is to be a full-service store for all customers. Our brands include Peter Millar, Barbour, Bugatchi, Fish Hippie, Filson, Paige Denim, DL1961 Denim, Hiltl, Lucchese Boots, Smathers & Branson, Brackish Bowties, Collared Greens, SAXX underwear, SWIMS shoes, Aftco, Mizzen+Main, Happy Socks, Moore & Giles leather goods, A Fish Named Fred, and many more. We even offer tuxedo rentals! ” For more information, call (904) 310-6235 or visit their Facebook page.

errie and Steve Sell opened Debonair, an upscale women’s handbag and jewelry store, in 2009, but surprisingly, the store was Steve’s idea. “My husband is a visionary,” says Jerrie. “He had done a lot of research and realized that no matter what was happening with the economy, women still purchased quality handbags.” The couple had lived in Fernandina Beach since 1999, when they built a home at the same time they were building Savannah Grande, an assisted living facility, which then was called Amelia Trace. “It was a busy time for us!” laughs Jerrie. Today, Debonair is located on Centre Street, having moved there two years ago. “We love our new location,” says Jerrie. “The store has a modern look, and it showcases our products better.” Debonair’s latest fashions in handbags, jewelry, and gifts include brands like Brighton, Michael Kors, Brahmin, Hobo, Sondra Roberts, Remi & Reid, and Mariana. “We have something for every woman’s budget, with a variety of styles and price points.” Jerrie’s daughter-in-law, Victoria, manages the store and its two employees, which is always bustling with shoppers, both locals and visitors alike. Jerrie credits their success to keeping up with the latest trends. “We shop in New York for our handbags and accessories,” notes Jerrie. “We always have something new! In fact, we’re coming out with a new line of travel purses and accessories.” For more information, visit Debonair at 114 Centre Street or call (904) 261-6993, or find them on Facebook.

COMMUNITY Founded in September, the Bartram Garden Club serves Nassau County by sharing its love of gardening through classes, community projects, and environmental awareness. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTOS BY MARC WILLIAMS

I

n early 2016, Beverly Williams and Carolyn Stevens decided that Amelia Island and greater Nassau County needed a state garden club to serve its residents. Williams, a Fernandina Beach resident, was already a member of a federated garden club in Jacksonville, as well as a flower show judge. “Like myself, many residents were active in a federated club before moving here from another state,” says Williams. “Most of us were learning how to navigate Florida’s unique climate and soil. Others wanted to continue their floral design studies.” She and Stevens, District IV Director of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. (FFGC), hoped to promote service projects and community building around Nassau County through floral design, gardening, and environmental studies. The Bartram Garden Cub was formed in September 2016, beginning with 26 charter members. It is so named to honor the legacy of Colonial naturalist William Bartram, who set foot in Florida at Amelia Island in 1774. “We felt it was appropriate to acknowledge the role he played in Northeast Florida’s history,” says Williams. “Bartram discovered many plants and animals here unknown to science at that time.” In total, 21 Bartram

Members Alice Caldwell and Claudia Burningham led a garden therapy program recently at Osprey Village, Amelia Island.

Trail markers have been dedicated at various sites in Florida by state garden clubs. One marker stands at the riverfront in downtown Fernandina Beach. “Service to the community is an important hallmark of the club,” says Stevens. “Members place a floral design on a rotating basis in the foyer of the Fernandina library, serve on the Design Council of Fernandina Main Street, and lead garden therapy programs at a local assisted living facility. One member is actively identifying heritage trees within the City of Fernandina Beach. The club hopes to soon sponsor National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC) ‘Design Study Units 1-6,’ a series of basic design workshops taught by FFGC instructors, which will be offered to club members and open to the general public.” The Bartram Garden Club meetings are open to all and cover a wide variety of topics; their membership represents many types of gardening interests and skill levels. Programs address the various continued on page 50.

Billy & Bob

Powell

BY DICKIE ANDERSON PHOTO BY STEVE LEIMBERG, UNSEENIMAGES.COM

B

illy and Bob Powell always knew they would end up on Amelia Island. Both are from Georgia, but little did they know that Bob’s career would turn them into corporate nomads. The two met and married while in college, then Bob’s career in agribusiness took them all across the country. They made 18 moves in 40 years. The Powells began to visit Amelia Island when their children were young. No matter where Bob’s career took them, the family would always return for some beach time on Amelia Island. While living in Memphis, Billy developed skills as a candy maker, where a friend owned a cake and candy shop. Always a perfectionist, she attended several professional candy schools. She later taught classes at the shop. After the couple moved, she continued to make candy for family, friends, weddings, and parties. Now permanent residents living by the ocean, they love having family nearby and the many friends they have made here through the years. The couple has made an imprint on the community they love. Billy, a familiar face on Amelia Community Theatre stages, has been involved in every level of the theater’s impressive productions, serving on the board, backstage, and on-stage. With a big smile, she says she cannot pick one role that was her favorite. Her most recent stage appearance was is in ACT’s production of Calendar Girls, and she said she has never had so much fun. Part of the challenge of her part was taking on a British accent. Billy’s love of children is clear. Her longtime commitment to Peppermint Players, an ACT traveling troop that performs

in schools throughout the community, is a favorite activity. She has also been active in the various summer camp programs that ACT has offered area children each summer since 2005. Billy was on the board of directors of the Amelia Island Book Festival in the years when the festival hosted Pat Conroy, Jeff Shaara, Cassandra King, Sonny Brewer, and Dorothea Benton Frank. The Powells present a scholarship each year to a young writer pursuing a career in writing. The scholarship honors their late daughter, Christa Powell Walley, who was an enthusiastic reader and a talented writer. Bob Powell has shared his talents with a variety of non-profits organizations in the community, including Community in Schools Nassau, Barnabas, and Hope House. He was recognized by a grateful community as Nassau County Volunteer of the Year for Community Service by the Nassau County Volunteer Center in 2012. He is currently co-facilitating a Grief Share program through the Powell’s church, Memorial United Methodist. The no-cost program has experienced great success. Bob shared that the church will continue to offer the program to the community. Above all else, the couple love the beach. Bob starts each day with his sunrise fix. Billy volunteered for the island Turtle Watch program for 9 years. When not enjoying their beloved beach, the Powell’s have explored the world, visiting every continent except Antarctica. Billy, smiling her best show-time smile, confirmed that there are no plans for that trip.

Founded in September 2016, the U.S. Constitution Scholarship Foundation aims to educate today’ss students on the Constitution and shape tomorrow’s leaders. BY KAR BY AREN N MILLLE LER W WIITH H HOW OWAR ARD PI PINE NES

T

he U. S. Constitution Scholarship Foundation, Inc. was incorporated in September 2016, receiving its 501(c)(3) non-profit education organization status in late December. “Our purpose is simple, but very important: to promote knowledge, discussion, understanding and respect for the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, as it has shaped our American heritage and should shape future leaders of our country,” says President Al Watson. The foundation is comprised of three pillars: an educational program called the University of US, a Scholarship Program, and a Speaker’s Forum. With funds permitting, the Speaker’s Forum is committed to bringing nationally recognized speakers to Nassau County throughout the year to discuss the Constitution, our American heritage, and various aspects of the American political process. When four friends from Amelia Island were casually discussing a New York Times article that stated high school

students were no longer taught the U.S. Constitution, they were baffled and concerned. “We couldn’t understand how such an important part of our history was being left out of schools,” says Howard Pines. “In fact, students were learning very little about our history before 1865, including about the Founding Fathers, the Bill of Rights, and the Constitution.” Shortly after that initial discussion, Pines, along with friends Bill Amos, Jeff Murphy, and Al Watson, partnered to form the U. S. Constitution Scholarship Foundation. The foundation’s initial and most significant emphasis has been on the University of US, an educational program that covers the U.S. Constitution and the Founding Fathers. This educational program is primarily focused on junior and senior high school students. “A major concern is making sure future generations continue to learn about the Constitution,” says Pines. “A recent article in the New York Times was headlined, ‘Why Did We Stop Teaching Political History?’ With this in mind, our Board of Directors came up with the idea for the University of US. Working with local school administrators, the University of US launched in January. Sharyl Wood, a former Associate Director of Administrative Services for the Nassau County School System, agreed to join as the Chief Operating Officer. The University of US curriculum includes the American founding and the roles played in developing the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution by Ben Franklin, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Alexander Hamilton. Also covered are the Constitution’s most important articles and amendments, key judicial decisions, Supreme Court justices, the role of The Federalist Papers, and interpretation of the U.S. Constitution. The educational program includes break-out sessions, roleplaying, and other interactive elements. Students in the program not only strengthen their knowledge of the U.S. Constitution, they build a resume for college. All students completing the program will receive a Certificate of Graduation. continued on pgae 51.

Studying floral design art is one of the three basic pillars of a well-balanced garden club, keeping the focus on plant material—how to grow it, use it, and display it. The club’s design studies aim to help members creatively use fresh and/or dried plant material in an artistic and functional manner. The club also encourages members and the general public to enroll in garden study courses sponsored by FFGC and NGC. Through National Garden Clubs, the club provides a broad spectrum of gardening-related studies for NGC credit. Gardening Studies, Landscape Design, and Environmental Studies are three separate series of courses offered to affiliate members. The Bartram Garden Club currently meets at the Fernandina branch of the Nassau County Public Library the second Thursday of the month, September through May, beginning at 10 a.m. Programs alternate between design, horticulture, and environmental topics. During every meeting club members contribute pocket change which, when it totals $68, will be sent to the Forest Service and used to plant 350 pine seedlings. Guests and prospective members are always welcome. For more information about the organization and upcoming meetings, visit the club’s website at www.bartramgardenclub.org.

Constitution from page 49. In addition, students are eligible to apply for a $5,000 scholarship to the college of their choice. “We are providing two scholarships for 2017,” says Pines. “And we hope to be able to offer five in 2018.” Funds raised will also support curriculum development and operation of the program. Additional funds may be set aside to provide educational support for high school teachers. The University of US held its first session at FSCJ Nassau Center on January 10, featuring Karin Agness, founder and president of the Network for Enlightened Women (NEW), discussing “Articles of the U.S. Constitution.” The inaugural event drew 40 students, who had applied to be part of the program. The session received high reviews from the students and guests like the Honorable Judge Robert Foster. “I was impressed with the large number of students who appeared, and how attentive they were,” says Judge Foster. The second session was presented by Judge Adrian Soud of the Fourth Judicial Circuit Court in Florida. His presentation covered key U. S. Constitution amendments, and it was a tremendous hit with the students. On March 13, Congressman Ron DeSantis will speak about the connection between America’s Founding Fathers and our American Heritage. On April 3, one of the country’s leading Professors of Constitutional Law, John Baker, will speak about the different philosophies in interpreting the U.S. Constitution. The third pillar of the Foundation, the Speaker’s Forum, is set to launch on Monday, April 10 at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Conference Center. It will be kicked off by Stephen Moore, a well-known economist and regular guest on cable news channels, who was an editor of the Wall Street Journal. Along with Lawrence Kudlow, he recently served as a primary economic advisor to President Donald Trump. This program is open to the public. For more information about the U. S. Constitution Scholarship Foundation, visit www.uscsf.net or contact Howard Pines at hpines@beampines.com or (914) 261-5261.

S

pring is just around the corner! What a wonderful time of the year, when everything is fresh and new, including the wonderful perennials which appear year after year. This is a great time to plant something new in your garden. By now, it should be cleaned and prepared for the coming season; if not, this is the time to do so. Believe it or not, there were other colors besides my favorite—yellow—at the annual Growers Show. I also found some beautiful plants in other colors, like the new Hibiscus called Starry Starry Night, which features huge, soft pink blossoms up to 8 inches across, showcased against a background of dark, nearly black leaves. Deep red eyes offer a stunning contrast. The flowers open in midsummer and continue blooming down the stems well into fall. This beauty delivers a dazzling display of big, bold color late in the season. We all know how wonderful Hibiscus plants are, and yes, they can be a little iffy in the cold, but remember not to pull them out until you have done the thumb test: scrape your nail down the

stems right to the root if necessary where you will usually find green. Starry Starry Night will with new stems and leaves in warmer weather. Just have a little patience—this plant is well worth it. For ground cover or as pretty edging for your garden, two new Ajuga reptans caught my eye. Black Scallop, known as Bugleweed, is black as night, featuring unusually large, bold foliage. The color is nearly black, and the leaves are delightfully scalloped. Short spikes of blue flowers appear in late spring, and the plant is an evergreen. The Ajuga reptans Sugar Plum has variegated foliage of silvery green, maroon, pink, and cream, which creates a tapestry of color in beds and borders. Blue flower spikes appear above the mat forming foliage in late spring, and the

plant can be used effectively beneath ornamental trees and shrubs. I also discovered a new Loropetalum called Chinese Jazz Hands. This is the latest in a series of strong growing plants with outstanding form, flowers, and foliage. With dark purple leaves, it holds its rich color all season long, which contrasts nicely with its rich pink flowers. Another Hibiscus, the Midnight Marvel, is a plant worth adding to your garden for a beautiful display of red. It is a spectacular hybrid with dark purple-tinted maple-like foliage, and it is covered with 8- to 9-inch scarlet red flowers from late summer into fall. It grows about 4 feet tall and wide with the darkest foliage, and it requires sunlight. Since it produces a full, long flowering, shrub-like mound in a perennial garden, it would look great with variegated grass plants, potato vines, Mexican petunias, or yellow blooming tick seed. Contrasting your plants makes a pretty picture in your garden! If you have any questions, please email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

hen Polly and Clyde Benninghoff decided to downsize into a smaller home, they embraced the challenge of creating a new place with the best of their previous home and the convenience of a smaller, one-floor dwelling. In selecting a floorplan, the couple wanted to find places for their collected treasures and a home that was ready for entertaining. Originally from Ohio, the couple raised six children before moving full-time to Amelia Island. While living in Ohio, they owned a condominium in Amelia Island Plantation and visited often. Their first house was a large home on the south end of the island with a swimming pool and lots of space for family and friends. When the time came for a smaller, more manageable home, they found exactly what they wanted in The Preserve.

Polly’s talents are evident throughout the spacious home. One room flows into another, with the living room leading into the kitchen and family room. Her passion for collections is showcased throughout the home. She has long been involved in decorating businesses and projects. Many Amelia Islanders have purchased her custom-made jewelry. Polly has always had an interest and talent for working with textiles. She had her own interior design consulting business in Akron, Ohio. She has a love for fabrics and coordinating color, scale, and different patterns to create very unexpected and interesting customdesigned spaces. She often works with an interesting or unusual piece of artwork, pulling colors from them in her accessorizing and decorating efforts. Polly knew when she saw it that it was what the space needed. The dining table is made of threequarter inch glass on pedestals. The glass minimizes the impact of a large dining room table. A collection of beautiful crystal is showcased in a cabinet in the dining area. The collections throughout the house have great sentimental value to the couple. As Polly notes, they are reminders of “living a full life.” Polly has a collection of eggs that belonged to her mother and she has added many more. They are displayed throughout the house. The couple owns a collection of original artwork by artist Joni Johnson, an artist from Indianapolis. She gained some notoriety in the 1970’s and 80’s before her death. Collectors include Harry Belafonte, and one of her works hangs in the White House. Knowing the artist has made the watercolor-and-India ink works of art even more special to the couple. Eleven of Johnson’s paintings are hung throughout the house. A collection of original or copies of French and Italian posters decorate the kitchen and family room. They have been matted in bright orange and create a strong design statement in the kitchen. Large glass bottles of vinegar-soaked veggies complement the posters. Polly smiles as she explains her obsession with pillows. Her rule of 58 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • MARCH 2017

thumb is to use three different patterns, and one of the patterns is repeated in the room. She explains the pillows add interest and character to a couch or bed. She loves combining unexpected fabrics and designs, often mixing in an animal print. All of her pillows are filled with down, which ensures they hold their shape longer. One of Polly’s favorite words is “repurposing”. She has done that many times over in her current home. Using selected fabrics, she has reupholstered favorite pieces to fit their new space. Each of the home’s guest bedrooms has an upholstered headboard, coordinated bedding, pillows (of course), and selected treasures. Three French chairs found in antique resale shops were cleaned up and reupholstered, and they became a focal point for one of the guest bedrooms. A large oil painting of a heron which hangs in the living room perfectly illustrates Polly’s design philosophy of focusing on a favorite piece of art. It was a gift from her husband, Clyde, when they moved into their first island house. It originally hung on a stair landing, but it is now a focal point in the living room. In the family room, a favorite antique French poster offered accent colors for the array of throw pillows on the room’s generous couch. The Benninghoff home is a showcase for Polly Benninghoff’s talents and the couple’s collected treasures, which have been incorporated in their new home and lend special meaning to each room. 60 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • MARCH 2017

Doo Wop’s BEST 50’S DINER With perfectly cooked eggs and omelets, pancakes and waffles, an extensive diner-style menu, and fun ‘50s décor and music, Doo Wop is a great spot for breakfast and lunch. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

L

isa Deringer has been a collector of ‘50s memorabilia for as long as she can remember. So when she and her husband, Charles, decided to combine their vast restaurant experience with some ‘50s-style décor and fun, the Doo Wop’s Best 50’s Diner was born. The Doo Wop has a large and tasty diner-style menu, but my favorite is breakfast, serving up everything from omelets and pancakes to sausage, corned beef hash, and even steak all day long, while playing great music from the 1950s. Recently I joined some friends from “The Breakfast Club,” a group which meets weekly on Thursdays at the Doo Wop Diner. This week there were four of us: local musician Dan Voll, boat captain Pajamadave Voorhees, his mother, Carol, and myself. Our server, Stephanie, came right over as we arrived and served us coffee and juice after we sat down. I ordered a Western Omelet, and I believe Doo Wop’s is the best in the world, although not traditional. A normal Western is made with ham, onions, and peppers, but Doo Wop’s is spilling over with ham, bacon, green peppers, mushrooms, onions, and tomatoes, and topped with shredded cheddar cheese. The Doo Wop cooks pay close attention to their egg dishes. They are always perfectly cooked, delicate, fluffy, and moist. I also ordered Hash Browns, which were super crispy on the outside, and soft and steamy within, just like they should be. A side of deli-style rye toast with butter perfectly completed my breakfast. And the coffee! You can always judge a diner by its coffee, which should be American-style, fresh, hot, and strong, but not bitter, and served in a heavy mug. Doo Wop’s coffee is all of those things, and we enjoyed a cup or two, along with a glass of orange juice. Dan ordered the Morning Special, which is two eggs any style with two bacon strips, two sausage links, and grits or hash browns. Carol ordered a Lite Morning Special, which consisted of two eggs served with one sausage link and one bacon strip. But Pajamadave went big that morning with a three-egg Ultimate Omelet, filled with sausage, bacon, green

peppers, mushrooms, onions, and diced tomatoes, topped with shredded cheddar cheese. The Breakfast Club agreed that their dishes were perfect, especially the eggs – both Dan and Carol like their eggs served a bit more well done, with thoroughly cooked whites and soft yolks. Dave and Dan like to share their breakfasts, and they swapped some eggs and sausages and such, and a good time was had by all.

When ordering breakfast at Doo Wop, you can order exactly what you want, and their menu is extensive, with several types of toast, English muffins, and bagels. Honey Ham, Country Fried Steak, Belgium Waffles, and Southern Style Grits are welcome menu items, and on the lighter side, they also offer oatmeal and cold cereal. The Doo Wop is open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch, and it is available for catered affairs. It’s a familyfriendly, old-fashioned restaurant that takes me down memory lane every time I go! Visit them at 1120 South 14th Street or call (904) 432-8400.

backyard adventure

a

I

good

walk

BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTOS BY SHERRY GARBARINI

’ll be doing some hiking this spring, and what better way to get in shape then to go for a walk! My adventure begins with a long hike – 15 miles to be exact – to Big and Little Talbot Island State Parks. These beautiful islands lie along the East Coast Greenway, known locally as the Amelia Island Trail (AIT). I’ve reserved a campsite at Little Talbot Island State Park, and I carry all my gear in a small backpack. Even with two liters of water, it weighs less than 20 pounds, perfect for my day-long trek. I begin at dawn, while it’s still cool, and head south toward Jacksonville. The AIT opened in May 2013. Strictly for non-motorized use, it takes advantage of the tree canopy along A1A, with much of the trail shaded and shielded from the wind. It then crosses Nassau Sound and connects with the Timucuan Trail, which is being completed in phases on the Talbot Islands. These trails will also become part of the Greenway, which will eventually connect Calais, Maine with Key West. On Amelia Island, the AIT runs seven miles from Peters Point to George Crady Bridge Fishing Pier State Park, where it connects to Big Talbot Island. Once I cross Nassau Sound, I’m in Jacksonville and on the Timucuan Trail. The trail is beautiful. Part of it is boardwalk, keeping the traffic noises from A1A at a minimum, and it features benches and viewing platforms along the way for rest and bird watching. As I get closer to Little Talbot, the trail curves east toward the beach and connects with other trails, including the Blackrock and Big Pine Trails. Eventually, the trail ends, and I’m walking along A1A, across the marshes of Simpson Creek, a popular spot for kayakers and fishermen. Walking on a highway is not my favorite thing to do, but there’s plenty of grassy shoulder to walk on, and it’s less than three miles before I arrive at Little Talbot Island State Park campground, unscathed, and eager for a respite. In all, the 15 miles took about 7 hours to walk, with 3 rest stops, and I still have much of the afternoon to explore the park. After setting up my tent and preparing a hearty lunch, I take a look around the campground and surrounding area, featuring full amenities and lovely views of peaceful tidal creeks and the Atlantic Ocean. Kayaking, surfing, fishing, hiking, biking, birding, picnicking, shelling, and swimming are just some of the many activities enjoyed at the Talbot Islands. With five miles of beach, Little Talbot Island is a great place to observe migratory and resident shorebirds. Boardwalks cross over the dunes, providing access to the beach and protecting wildlife and plants. The Dune Ridge Trail offers a challenging 4-mile loop on an ancient dune ridge, beneath a canopy of live oaks, and a bit of beach walking. I’m tired after my long day, and a cozy sleeping bag and the sounds of the ocean lull me to sleep in no time! For more information about camping and hiking in the Talbot Islands, visit www.floridastateparks.org.
