The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance culminates Sunday with a display of three hundred rare automotive gems on the fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia Island.

ISLANDER Philip Kelly Deana Basile Kelly Publishers and Editors Tom Barrett Art Director Mark O’Day Advertising Sales

Contributing Writers Dickie Anderson, Michael Gass, Karen Miller, Betty Morrell, Julie Simmons, Teri Sopp

March is one of our favorite months on Amelia Island. With its arrival comes the end of winter and the advent of warmer weather, followed quickly by azalea blooms and spring perennials heralding the new season. As our gardens begin to stir, happily pushing us outside to dig in the dirt, we have our first clue that spring has sprung. Here on Amelia Island, our second clue is the much-anticipated Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. Known affectionately around the world as “The Amelia,” our favorite automobile show is a two-time winner of the Motoring Event of the Year at the prestigious International Historic Motoring Awards in London. Its reputation is well-deserved. Whether you’re traveling around the country or across the globe, when you mention Amelia Island, car lovers of all ages and types get interested. Renowned for its gathering of famed race cars each year, as well as appearances by the legendary racers who drove them, this event has come to be known as the “Racers’ Concours.” This year’s honoree is the great Belgian racing driver Jacky Ickx., 6-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In addition to the usual array of everything automotive—from seminars and social events to road rallies, an extraordinary auction, and a chance to test drive new models—this three-day extravaganza offers an unmatched opportunity to see some of the world’s finest automobiles. Celebrating its twenty-fourth anniversary this year, the Concours culminates Sunday with a display of three hundred rare automotive gems on the fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia Island. These painstakingly restored classic cars represent almost every era of automobile production, including very early models, the great luxury cars of the 1930s, classic models from the 1950s and beyond, including some of the best racing cars ever produced. Congratulations to Bill Warner and everyone at “The Amelia” for presenting another spectacular Concours weekend. Over the past 22 years, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Foundation has given over $3.5 million dollars to local charities, including over $1 million dollars to Community Hospice & Palliative Care. Community Hospice has been an innovative national leader in palliative and hospice care, as well as being an important provider of programs and services dealing with advanced illness here in Nassau County. Also this month, we look at the friendship between Bill Warner and Jack May, which got started in 1975 in the coast-to-coast Cannonball race; take a closer look at the work of Community Hospice, which continues to expand in north and central Florida; look ahead to the Take Stock in Children annual gala and their invaluable work in Nassau County; discover a delicious Argentine asado; and much more. See you around the island!

N

early three decades ago, Bill Warner, an antique car collector and writer/photographer with Road and Track magazine, thought Amelia Island would be the perfect location to hold a Concours d’Elegance. Translated from the French, concours d’élégance is a “competition of elegance,” and it refers to an event where prestigious vehicles are displayed and judged. With help from Patti Hendrix of The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, the first Concours was produced in 1996. It has grown dramatically over the years, attracting tens of thousands of people to the island. Along with the public display of automobiles, the Concours offers a variety seminars, social events, and auctions, rounding out a fabulous weekend of exceptional autos, their owners, and car enthusiasts from all over the world. “The Amelia,” as it is commonly known, is celebrating its 24th year, and it has become one of the top automotive events in the world. Always held the second full weekend in March, it draws rare vehicles from collections all over the world to The

Golf Club of Amelia Island and The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, for a celebration of the automobile like no other. The annual event will be held March 7, 8, 9, and 10 on the 10th and 18th fairways of the Golf Club, replacing golf carts with high-style cars and their enthusiastic owners. And this year, The Amelia has partnered with HistoricRacingNews.com to produce a live stream of the event on Sunday, March 10.

JACKY ICKX HONORED AT THE 2019 AMELIA CONCOURS This year’s Honoree is Jacky Ickx, a Belgian racing driver who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans six times, and achieved eight wins and 25 podium finishes in Formula One. He also won the Can-Am Championship in 1979 and is a former winner of the Dakar Rally. He won the majority of his races for Scuderia Ferrari, for which he was the team’s leading driver for several seasons in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

“It is an honor to have ‘Mr. Le Mans’ as our 2019 honoree,” says Warner, “especially on the 50th anniversary of the first of his six Le Mans victories.”

CELEBRATING THE JAGUAR XK120 AND THE LANDMARK PORSCHE 962 This year also marks the 70th anniversary of the speed record and the first race victory that set the Jaguar XK120 on its course of fame and gave it its immortal name. On a super highway in Belgium, the new Jaguar recorded a top speed of 126.448 mph. With the windshield and top removed, it was timed at 132.6 mph. The XK120 became the fastest production car in the world, eclipsing the existing record by over 22 mph. Perhaps the XK120’s most impressive number was the price tag: for 1,000 pounds sterling, one could own the fastest production car in the world. The XK120 had no equal on the road or in the showroom, standing alone atop a short list of aspirational cars. “Jaguar’s XK120 is a landmark car. It was the first sports car I ever rode in,” says Warner. “I was just a kid, but the smell of the leather and the wood has stayed with me. The XK120 is simply unforgettable.” 14 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

This year’s Amelia Concours will honor and celebrate the 35th anniversary of one of the greatest and most accomplished sports racing cars of all time: Porsche’s landmark 962, which reigned as the king of international prototype racing across two decades. In the American IMSA competition alone, the Porsche 962 won 54 races (15 of 16 in 1985) and both the Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ Championships in 1985, ’86, ’87, and ’88. Ten years after its American debut, a GT version of the 962 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans; the third Le Mans victory for the 962 and the 13th for Porsche. “Porsche’s 962 is a landmark design,” says Tim Pendergast, Director of Operations for the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance and a noted GTP authority. “It’s a catalog of ‘firsts’ for Porsche’s engineering and design. The 962 stood apart and above because it was a complete absolutely turn-key ready package.”

ground-breaking cars that helped revolutionize America’s great race. From its earliest days, the “500” was the cradle of innovation and the nursery of famous, sometimes obscure and occasionally infamous cars that made the Indy 500 not just “the greatest spectacle in racing,” but the most important auto race in the world. Speed has always been the ultimate goal and the defining virtue of the cars that raced at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Indy’s ceaseless technological innovations dated to the days before World War I, when a Grand Prix Peugeot showed the sport the way forward with its seminal high-revving dohc four-valve engine. It ended the age of the behemoth, bringing science and fresh technology to Indy’s pursuit of speed. Another anniversary is being celebrated at The Amelia this year: 50 years of record speeds and drag racing at Gainesville Raceway. NHRA (National Hot Rod Assn.) drag racing at top levels is part motorsport and part rocket science. Top Fuel dragsters are the fastest accelerating manned vehicles on Earth and generate more speed quicker than any other machine piloted by humans. off from the Kennedy Space Center. NHRA’s Top Fuel classes generate more power than a locomotive and shake the earth with measurable seismic tremors. “Top Fuel dragsters are the most powerful race cars on the planet. They accelerate from zero-to-100 mph in less than a second,” says Don Robertson, former Gainesville Raceway track manager who is now an organizer of The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance’s Cars & Coffee event. “It’s a horizontal space shot with forces beyond the comprehension of most people. Dragsters have the most extreme and exotic physics in motorsport.”

CARS OF THE ROCK STARS Cincinnati-based artist David Snyder has painted a oneof-a-kind Fender Stratocaster guitar to help the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance celebrate the “Cars of the Rock Stars” class in 2019. The special class centers on vehicles and guitars from John Oates’s personal collection and features additional vehicles owned or closely associated with well-known rock stars. The event will also include opportunities to meet John Oates in person. “As a fan of unique one-of-a-kind guitars and cars, this amazing David Snyder painting on the iconic Fender Stratocaster is a must have acquisition for any collector,” says Oates, cocurator of Cars of the Rock Stars. “This Cars of the Rock Stars Fender Stratocaster features automobiles owned or closely associated with successful musicians hand painted by David Snyder in acrylic. The headstock is inspired by the hood of Janis Joplin’s 1964 Porsche 356C. Other highlights include the 1959 Chevrolet Stingray Racer driven by Elvis Presley and a Porsche 911 GT3-R customized to celebrate the music and instruments of Eddie Van Halen.” The guitar will be offered at RM Sotheby’s Amelia Island 2019 auction. All proceeds will go directly to the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Foundation, Inc. A special class of Mercedes-Benz 500K - 540K will take center stage at The Amelia this year. The 500K and 540K descend from the mighty Mercedes-Benz SSK, winner of the brutal 1931 Mille Miglia. stripes: a true dual-purpose GT able to be driven to the track, raced successfully, and driven home on public roads. “The ‘SWB’ was touched by genius,” says Warner. “It was engineered by Giotto Bizzarrini, Carlo Chiti and Mauro Forghieri, the body was designed by Pininfarina and constructed by Scaglietti. The 250 SWB is among the greatest and most enduring automobile shapes of all time.” Everyone has a Volkswagen story, and this year The Amelia’s Custom Coachwork VW special class unleashed a series of personal and amusing Volkswagen reminiscences from the its staff. In addition, The Amelia took their storytelling idea to the next level, requesting VW stories from the public, which will appear on their website and Facebook page. If you’re a Volkswagen lover, be sure to check out the 1957 Volkswagen Rometsch Lawrence Convertible that will be featured at the show on March 10. A striking mid-engine Corvette prototype will be featured as a part of this year’s Mid-Engine sports car class. The display is also scheduled to include examples from DeTomaso, Ferrari, and Lamborghini. The 1973 Chevrolet Corvette XP-897 GT was one of two mid-engine Corvette prototypes designed by 20 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

General Motors Styling Division to promote the smooth and high revving Wankel Rotary engine. The rotary was intended to power GM passenger cars from 1976, so both cars were shown at the major worldwide auto shows from September 1973 to April 1974. Unfortunately, the rotary Wankel engine proved to be both thirsty and polluting compared to the conventional piston-in-cylinder engine, so the simultaneous gasoline shortage and strict Federal emission legislation sealed its fate. After the last show appearance in Europe, the XP-897 GT lost the rotary engine and was sealed in a plywood case and stored at the British GM Division Vauxhall Motors Design Centre in Bedford, England. Scheduled to be crushed in the early 1980s, it was rescued by Corvette author Tom Falconer with the assistance of then GM Head of Design, Chuck Jordan, and has been displayed in Kent, England until recently. On March 10, the XP-897 GT will be displayed alongside a recently-acquired 1973 GM rotary engine. In addition to the show on Sunday, March 10, The Amelia Concours’ popular and entertaining seminars will again be held on Friday and Saturday of Concours week in The Ritz-Carlton, MARCH 2019

Amelia Island’s Talbot Ballroom. On Friday, March 8, take a look deep inside the complex and secretive world of racing crew chiefs and how they often succeed in bending the rule book to their advantage, in a seminar entitled “Racing Around the Rules: The Unfair Advantage.” Held at 3 p.m., the seminar is presented by Jim Busby, Ray Evernham, Kevin Jeannette, Andy Petree, Mark Raffauf, Jay Signore, and Steve Roby. On Saturday, March 9 at 10:30 a.m., learn about Porsche’s landmark 962 prototype and the racers who dominated international long distance racing for over a decade, in a seminar titled “The Porsche 962 Dynasty.” Hosted by Justin Bell, the seminar features Derek Bell, Rob Dyson, Hurley Haywood, 2019 Amelia Honoree Jacky Ickx, Jochen Mass, Mark Raffauf, and Alwin Springer. Tickets for these events are available on the Concours website. The mission of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Foundation is to create a world-class motoring event that serves the community through education and charitable giving. 22 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

In 2018, the Foundation donated $100,000 to Community Hospice & Palliative Care of Greater Jacksonville. The not-forprofit hospice works to improve the quality of life for patients and families facing end-of-life care. In addition, money contributed to “Shop with Cops” provides holiday presents for underprivileged youth. Year after year, The Amelia is recognized as the largest single contributor to the Mayport Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. In total, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Foundation has donated more than $3.5 million to local charities since 1996. “The Amelia is about celebrating rare and historicallysignificant automobiles, but it is people that make it special,” says Warner. “Being able to give back to the local community makes all of the work that our Board of Directors, staff and hundreds of volunteers invest worthwhile.” For more information and complete schedule that includes RM Sotheby’s Auction, the Reliable Carriers’ Eight Flag Road Tour, Guardians of Porsche Winemakers Dinner, MercedesBenz Gala, and many more events, visit ameliaconcours.org. ISLAND CHAMBER SINGERS PERFORM SPRING CONCERTS AT AMELIA PLANTATION CHAPEL

ST. MICHAEL ACADEMY SPRING CARNIVAL RETURNS MARCH 14-17 The St. Michael Academy Spring Carnival is back! Kids and parents all over town are marking their calendars for March 14 to 17 to spin, slide, and swirl into fun for the whole family. “In our seventh year, this event has become a staple for the spring season in Fernandina Beach,” says event chair Allison Dillingham. “We love the carnival because it gives back to the community, and there is really nothing else like it!” And nothing else like it is right – the lights, sweet smells, laugher, and energy are contagious. On Thursday, March 14 from 5 to 10 p.m., Friday, March 15 from 5 to 11 p.m., Saturday, March 16 from noon to 11 p.m. and St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, from noon to 6 p.m., the young—and young at heart—can enjoy carnival rides, food, and entertainment on the grounds of Central Park at 1200 Atlantic Avenue. Tickets or session wristbands may be purchased at the carnival. To save money, pre-purchase a $75 wrist band and enjoy unlimited activities all four days. For more information or to purchase wristbands before March 12, contact the school at (904) 321-2102. All proceeds go to support students and teachers at St. Michael Academy.

Did you know that Amelia Island boasts a choral group that performs only classical music literature? The Island Chamber Singers (ICS) came together 15 years ago to do just that, and it is now 35-members strong! The vision of the group is to provide an opportunity for members to sing classical literature and to develop an audience on Amelia Island for that literature. For its spring concerts this year, ICS will create a bridge across Europe with “East Meets West,” featuring two major works: Antonin Dvo ák’s Te Deum and John Rutter’s Gloria. Rutter’s festive Gloria will usher in the Easter Season in grand style, with brass, percussion, and organ accompanying the singers. Rutter, a living composer whose works are performed all around the world, is beloved by both singers and audiences. Over the centuries, many important composers have contributed Gloria and Te Deum hymns to the classical canon. Concerts will take place at Amelia Plantation Chapel on April 5 at 7 p.m. and April 7 at 3 p.m. Tickets purchased in advance are $20. Visit www. IslandChamberSingers.org or purchase at the door for $25. Students are always welcome free of charge. For more information or to sing with the group, contact (904) 225-0575.

ROTARY CLUB OF AMELIA ISLAND SUNRISE WINE & FOOD TASTING ON MARCH 2 The Rotary Club of Amelia Island Sunrise presents its seventh annual Wine & Food Tasting this year on March 2 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Atlantic Recreation Center at 2500 Atlantic Avenue. “This event is so much fun,” says Public Relations Chair Caroline Blochlinger. “It feels like a big, huge block party.” The event originated at the Amelia Island Museum of History, where it quickly grew too large for the venue. Amelia Island Wine Company selects the wine for the tasting, 14 local restaurants provide delectable food pairings, and entertainment is provided by Crescendo Amelia. “The hit of the night is always the Wine Wall,” says Caroline. “The Rotary members donate bottles ranging from $20 to $100. For a donation of $20, you receive a ticket to draw for a bottle to take home.” All fun aside, this event is important because it supports a very good cause! Proceeds will purchase a 14-foot box-truck for Barnabas to deliver food, contribute toward purchase of a building lot for Nassau Habitat for Humanity, and donate toward Big Brothers Big Sisters and Friends of Fernandina Aviation for scholarships. Tickets start at $75. For more information, visit www.ameliaislandrotary.com.

ara Conca was destined to be an artist. Her great, great grandfather, Sebastiano Conca, was a master painter, and the first Italian painter whose work was hung in the Louvre in Paris. By the age of 17, Sara was living and working in Paris herself, a life-changing experience that reinforced her need for movement, energy, and art. While there, she studied sculpture at Les Ateliers d’Art de SaintMaur-des-Fosses, and further continued her education in South Florida as an assistant to the critically acclaimed artist, Purvis Young. Sara Conca has returned to her roots in Florida, which has inspired her to create a fresh new aquatic mystical series. It involves natural mixed media such as raw silver dust and 18k gold leafing, raw pigment colors, mica flakes, and natural crystals. “My work is intended to instantaneously immerse the viewer into the visual and emotional energies that I have devoted to each piece,” says Sara. “Depending on one’s ability and willingness to be guided by the senses, these paintings can lead one away from the mind and

into an alternate and self-made reality filled with color and feeling. My new series features gold. I love working with this color because it changes in the light and I can manipulate the textures and layering; thus affording each piece movement and energy from the reflecting and refracting light.” Sara shows her work in several galleries, including Stellars Gallery of Ponte Vedra. She works in her home art studios by the Nassau River, where natures speaks to her as she paints. “I love being out in the country with my art,” says Sara. “I feel that like nature, abstract art is so freeing, elemental, and ever-changing.” Sara has sold her works to many collectors in Europe, Asia, and the United States. Her paintings can be found in private chateaus and hotel lobbies in France, as well as in many exclusive celebrity homes and museums. For more information about Sara’s work, visit www.stellersgallerypv.com or www.saraconca.com, or call Sara for a private appointment at (917) 535-2669. Stellers Gallery is located at 240 A1A North in Ponte Vedra Beach.

oastal Sash and Door, a family-owned company, was founded in 1990 in Savannah, Georgia, as a distributor of Marvin Windows and Doors. The company has grown significantly since then, now featuring six locations stretching from South Carolina to St. Augustine. Despite starting as a Marvin distributor, the company now offers many brands of doors and windows to local residents and builders. Coastal Sash and Door works with contractors and homeowners in new construction, commercial and residential remodeling, and historic replacement. The office at Gateway to Amelia carries interior and exterior doors, entry doors, windows, and hardware. Sam Frederick works with architects, homeowners, remodelers, homebuilders, and commercial contractors to be the “go-to” source for highest quality windows and doors. Coastal carries Marvin windows, but also Integrity from Marvin and PGT products. “We carry turtle glass,” says Sam, explaining that the city and county have ordinances requiring oceanfront windows to block 40 percent of interior light. “With new construction or remodels on the beach, we have to comply with those ordinances.” Coastal Sash and Door has a showroom, and Sam is ready to meet with customers who are building or remodeling. “We work with the customer’s installer, or we can refer to one of our local contractors,” says Sam. “We can do one window, or a house full of windows and doors!” For more information, call (904) 6410346 or visit www.coastalashanddoor.com.

Bill Warner beside his 1971 Porsche 911T shortly after he drove it in the Cannonball race across the United States in April of 1975 with co-driver Tom Nehl.

On Apr. 25, 1975, Jack May and co-driver Rick Cline celebrate their crosscountry record of 35 hours, 53 minutes in the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-ShiningSea Memorial Trophy Dash official series.

friendship an Amelia Island

After competing against each other in the 1975 Cannonball race, Bill Warner and Jack May —Captain Marvel and Suwanee River Boy—have built an enduring friendship. BY JACK MAY PHOTOS COURTESY OF JACK MAY

B

ill Warner’s CB radio crackled sometime around midnight on a rainy April 23, 1975. “Captain Marvel, this is Suwanee River Boy. Where are you? Any Smokeys along the way?” In the slang of the day, “Smokeys” were policemen. Warner’s CB call sign was Captain Marvel, a nickname picked up in the Air Force, and I was Suwanee River Boy, a recent acquaintance. We were speeding westward in New Jersey in separate cars, competitors in the Cannonball Baker Sea-toShining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, both going for a crosscountry record. Warner, a photographer and writer for Road & Track Magazine, and his co-driver, Tom Nehl, drove a 1971 Porsche

911T. My co-driver, Rick Cline, and I raced my recently purchased new 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS. Manned by experienced drivers, the two automobiles sported driving lights, CB radios, and fuzz busters. Warner’s Porsche had a heavy 31-gallon fuel tank that “splayed” its front wheels. The Cannonball race, first run in 1971, was a madcap caper organized by Brock Yates of Car & Driver magazine. The event soon became a protest of the absurd 55-mph speed limit imposed by President Richard M. Nixon. Wheeled vehicles were to drive coast-to-coast from New York City’s Red Ball Garage in lower Manhattan to the Portofino Inn at Redondo Beach in Los Angeles. There were no other rules.

In 1975, the entrants ranged from serious to comical. The most colorful team drove a large Travco motor coach with six jovial drivers and a refrigerator filled with Italian food, wine, and beer. Warner and Nehl finished in 41 hours and 35 minutes. Cline and I experienced some bad luck, slowed down by jail time, getting lost and misdirected, and obstructionist jackrabbits in Arizona. Even so, we made it to the Portofino Inn in 35 hours and 53 minutes, ahead of all 17 other teams and setting a record. As reported in the August 1975 issue of Car and Driver, Warner told Yates that they “underestimated the difficulty of the Cannonball. They ran at a relatively modest pace, figuring those less prudent would be arrested and they would cruise to a high finish.” The 1975 Cannonball was the last race with the original itinerary: Red Ball Garage to Portofino Inn. “Cannonball Jack” May and Rick Cline can claim the record for that original series. After a final official 1979 Cannonball with a different starting point away from the congestion of downtown Manhattan, Yates decided to discontinue the formal event. Among his reasons were more traffic and increased police action, as well as monumental legal liabilities for sponsors and participants. Bill and I each went on in the next few years to race in numerous Sports Car Club of America events. In 1978, I won an SCCA National Championship after four consecutive Southeast Regional wins. In the August 1993 issue of Car Collector magazine, Bill and I collaborated on an article about the Cannonball-record-holding Ferrari Dino. As the 1970 Sports Car Club of America’s Photographer of the Year, Warner captured the photographs for the publication. In early 1996, Bill called me on the phone. “Jack, I am planning on sponsoring a Concours event at Amelia Island,” he said. “I am counting on your support, and it will make me happy if you will drive over in your Cannonball Dino and participate.” “Captain Marvel,” I said, “I am honored to be invited and I will be there without fail!” The first Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in 1996 was smaller than the Concours weekends of today, with perhaps 2,000 spectators. Thanks to the efforts of my enterprising young son, who worked the crowd for votes, the little Ferrari won the People’s Choice award! The Cannonball Dino has graced the field at Warner’s Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance many times since Bill’s first invitation. I wonder if Bill was thinking about his own Cannonball Porsche 911T when he showcased the Porsche 917 model at the 2010 Concours? At the 2016 Concours, Bill graciously awarded me the Maurice G. Bauer Trophy for my Cannonball record finish. Bill and I share a competitive spirit that comes from military academy educations and an abiding love of automobiles. Throughout the years, we have remained good friends. Since we both live in Florida, we have the pleasure of meeting up frequently at automotive events and talking cars. Of course, I never let Bill forget what he said about his 14th-place finish in 1975: “We underestimated the difficulty of the Cannonball!” To this day—for me and so many others—Bill Warner is still our Captain Marvel. He and I—the Suwanee River Boy— remain great friends, blood brothers of the Cannonball.

E

stablished in 1979, Community Hospice & Palliative Care has been an innovative national leader in palliative and hospice care, as well as providing programs and services to meet the diverse needs of the communities it serves. During its 40year history, Community Hospice & Palliative Care has served more than 215,000 adults and children in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau, and St. Johns counties, and recently expanded its service area to include 11 counties in north/central Florida. Through the support of more than 950 employees and 1,000 volunteers, the organization helps approximately 1,500 patients per day to live better with advanced illness—at home, in long-term care and assisted living facilities, in hospitals, and at its eight inpatient care centers. On January 25 this year, the foundation celebrated its 40th anniversary with a special reception that honored their “Guardians of Light” and the 1979 society members. Throughout 2019, Community Hospice will continue to celebrate the meaningful

milestones that shaped its 40-year legacy, thanks to sustained community involvement and support. “We are thankful to have been part of shaping modern hospice, bringing it from a movement 40 years ago to an essential part of our system of medical care and a treasured community asset,” says Community Hospice President and CEO Susan Ponder-Stansel. Today, Community Hospice is one of the longest-running hospice organizations in the U.S. “We were the first to develop free-standing inpatient hospice centers in or around communities, and the first to develop specialized children’s hospice programs,” says Ponder-Stansel. “And we constantly rank above the national averages for both patient and family satisfaction. We have opened new offices in Palatka, Lake City, and Nassau counties, with more to come this year, including the upcoming opening of the Stephen R. Chapman continued on next page.

Family Community Campus in the heart of St. Augustine.” Palliative care is defined as the treatment and relief of mental and physical pain without curing the causes, especially in patients suffering from a terminal illness. “We are here for patients and their families to ease pain and suffering,” says Ponder-Stansel. “Our services include hospice, advance care planning, veteran’s programs, grief and loss support, as well as community education.” Community Hospice also provides a special children’s program called Community PedsCare. “This program brings comfort and care to enhance the quality of life for patients from prenatal (before birth) to age 21,” she says. “The program supports the specialized needs and medical care of the child, their parents and siblings, other family members, caregivers, classmates, and teachers.” On Amelia Island, the Community Hospice Jane and Bill Warner Center for Caring is located on the first floor of its medical office building adjacent to Baptist Medical Center Nassau. The Warner Center opened 4-years ago and provides acute end-of-life care in a home-like setting. It’s named in honor of Jane and Bill Warner, founders of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, in recognition of the remarkable legacy the Warners and the Amelia Concours have left and will continue to leave on Nassau County. The Warner Center features eight private bedrooms and bathrooms, comfortable and spacious family gathering areas, a family laundry area, kitchen, and a meditation room. It has its own private entrance, making it feel like a stand-alone building while having the advantage of being connected to the hospital. The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance has given over $1 million dollars to the foundation through the years. “Through the work of so many amazing people, Community Hospice & Palliative Care will continue its work to improve the quality of life for patients and their families across north and central Florida,” says Ponder-Stansel. ake Stock in Children of Nassau County, Inc. has served the county for 22 years, and its board members, contributors, mentors, coaches, and students are feeling nostalgic. The organization’s annual Light Up a Life Gala will be held on March 28 at 6 p.m. at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, featuring a “walk down memory lane” theme. “Our gala will bring contributors, mentors, and students together for an evening to celebrate our success in providing scholarships, mentors, and hope,” says Executive Director Robin Lentz. “The evening will begin with raffle opportunities and a silent auction featuring more than 100 items from businesses and artists across the county. A three-course seated dinner with dessert reminiscent of mom’s apple pie and ice cream will follow, and feature talented pianist and singer John Springer, who will take our guests back in time with memorable tunes. In addition, our current high school and college students and some of our college graduates will share their stories about how their lives have been changed by Take Stock in a newly produced video.” Take Stock Nassau provides services to more than 577 lowincome academically talented students who aspire to attend college but could not otherwise afford to do so. Their programs provide skilled mentors who meet weekly with each student in grades 8 - 12, professional college coaches who monitor their progress, college readiness workshops, help with college selection, applications and placement, and four years of prepaid college tuition upon high school graduation. “Scholarship donations made to our organization are matched 100% by the Florida Pre-Paid Foundation STARS Project,” states Lentz. “All the dollars we raise stay in Nassau to serve our students, many of whom return to our county and are contributing citizens. No scholarship contribution is wasted. If any scholarship hours go unused by a student, we can assign them to another student.” One such student is Bella Gonzalez, a senior majoring in Economics at UNF. She’s been part of the TSIC program for 10 years. “I started with the program when I was 12 years old at Yulee Middle School. I am a first-generation college student and second-generation Mexican American,” says Gonzalez. “I was fortunate enough to meet my mentor, Donna Givens, when I was 11 years old, and I will be forever grateful. She is truly an amazing woman that has instilled a sense of perseverance in me to pursue my goals, regardless of any setbacks. TSIC support systems have opened up opportunities that I did not think possible, from academic programs to scholarship opportunities and internships.” TSIC’s Program Manager Kelli Bristow joined the Take Stock family in January 2017. “Once I accepted the position, my appreciation of Take Stock in Children’s vision immediately grew,” says Bristow. “I became passionate about my job and what the program expected of me in order to better serve those within the Nassau community. a variety of workshops to not only guide our students but to also help our mentors. We host a ‘Back to School Bash’ at the beginning of every school year to give our students the opportunity to get to know others in the program. We hold a ‘New Student Retreat’ every year which focuses on team building skills for those who were just inducted into our program the previous spring. “Other workshops include a FASFA workshop for our seniors and their parents/guardians, ACT/SAT Prep Courses, Junior and Senior Workshops. Also, our College Success Coaches do a fantastic job of holding ‘Mentor Chats’ throughout the school year to keep our mentors up to date with what colleges require for acceptance, tips and advice on how to keep their mentee engaged and on track with school, and other topics that are relevant to our mentors in building a solid and trustworthy relationship with their students.” “TSIC is important because it really changes lives,” says Lentz. “To ‘keep the promise’ to our students, our focus is on results. Statewide studies have shown that Take Stock students have a 26% higher graduation rate than the Florida average and a 65% higher graduation rate than their at-risk peer group. They also have a 23% higher college graduation rate than the Florida average and 136% higher college graduation rate than their at-risk peer group.” For more information about becoming a mentor, making a contribution, or attending this year’s gala, visit www.takestocknassau.org.

Fifi Queen BY DICKIE ANDERSON PHOTO BY STEVE LEIMBERG, UNSEENIMAGES.COM

S

ome people are like rock stars and they are known by one name. Fifi Queen Abdian is one of those people. Known near and far as just Fifi, she is a woman of many talents. She is a master entrepreneur, talented singer, and championship golfer all rolled into one high-energy woman. Many Amelia Islanders remember Fifi’s first store, which opened on Centre Street in 1992. Her talent for rounding up the best pre-worn clothing made the shop a go-to stop for discerning shoppers. In Fifi’s shop, you could find designer dresses and fine handbags, as well as a wide variety of incredibly priced clothing. Now, Fifi is back on the island after being away for many years. She has recently reopened a new Amelia Island signature store at the Harris Teeter Shopping Center located on First Coast Highway. A born entrepreneur, her talent for putting together successful franchise operations has resulted in 18 stores in South Florida and North Carolina. Stay tuned, it seems certain there will be more. The shops specialize in the resale of designer wear and accessories. In a comfortable, welcoming environment, a wide range of top-notch name brands like Gucci, Channel, and Louis Vuitton are offered for sale. Other popular labels carried by the stores include Talbots, Liz, Chico’s, Ann Taylor, and Banana Republic. Fifi knows what sells and she makes it available on a regular basis. Items move quickly in the store, or they are donated to needy local charities. Her success, says Fifi, comes from her focus on branding a personalized boutique-style customer experience. Above all, her customers want a deal, and she delivers. It all started in Waynesville, North Carolina, where Fifi Queen, one of five children, helped her divorced mother raise the family. There was no money for the finer things, including the clothes she saw in store windows and in magazines. 63 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Once a month, the family headed to Asheville for some bigcity shopping. At the age of thirteen, while visiting Asheville, the family stopped at a church rummage sale. She loved clothes, and she was intrigued by all that she saw for sale. As she was looking through the clothes, she received a tip from one of the people working that day. The tip? Come back at the end of the day and you could buy a whole bag full for $1. She still remembers some of the goodies she bought that day, which included a madras shirt. Like her talented mother, Fifi could play any song on the piano after hearing it once, and on top of that, she could sing. A great combination. She was a popular entertainer up and down the coast of Florida and many remember hearing her at the Amelia Island Plantation’s popular Admiral’s Lounge from 1982 off and on until 1988. Queen is a self-confessed overachiever. She composes classical and Southern country rock music, has been in an all-girl band, and has produced two country albums. As if her talent as an entrepreneur and performer isn’t enough, she also plays a mean round of golf. At one time, she was ranked among the top women golfers in North Florida. So get ready: Amelia Island’s own rock star, Fifi Queen, is back. MARCH 2019

in the garden Northern Spicebush

sweet spicebush As your garden returns to life with the arrival of spring, add new color and fragrance to your landscape with Spicebush, Sweet Pepperbush, and the Purple Pillar Hibiscus. BY BETTY MORRELL

I

n March, spring is finally here. Buds form on trees and shrubs, and flowering plants dance in the warmth of the sun. I love this time of year! For some spring fragrance in the air, an oldie-but-goodie is the Spicebush (Lindera benzoin), a two-fold plant. It makes a wonderful backdrop plant with its early displays of dense clusters of fragrant flowers. These lovely yellow star-shaped blossoms appear before the aromatic leaves emerge. Another reason to love this plant is that the beautiful Spicebush swallowtail butterfly uses it for food for its caterpillars, and a butterfly is always a welcome sight! In summer, the light green foliage makes an attractive backdrop, and in autumn, the leaves turn a bright golden yellow. Spicebush loves moisture. It grows in sun to part-shade, and its wonderful fragrance and beauty burst into bloom in late March or early April. This plant grows 6 to 12 feet high and becomes quite bushy, making it a wonderful specimen plant or backdrop for smaller plants. Fertilize with 1010-10 in early spring and prune after

flowering to maintain shape. If you plant more than one, plant them 6 to 12 feet apart. Continuing with fragrance and color, the Sweet Pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia) Ruby Spice is similar to the Spicebush as it blooms in July and August. The flower spikes are not a washed out shade of pink, but a deep reddish pink that stands out from a distance against dark green foliage. These colorful blooms retain the fragrance that makes the Ruby Spice a desirable summer-flowering shrub. Ruby Spice will grow in full sun to part-shade. (Protection from the hot afternoon sun is advised for our area.) The plants tend to produce new shoots from the base, eventually forming a dense thicket. Ruby Spice grows to 8 feet,

so plant them 3 to 4 feet apart. Clethra bloom on current season’s growth. Prune as required in late winter. Purple Pillar (Hibiscus syriacus “Gardini Santiago”) PP is a slender touch of color ideal for gardens with limited space. This slender columnar plant has a dense covering of summer flowers that attract pollinators. Fluffy lavender blossoms with bright ruby eyes makes this Hibiscus really stand out. Because of its compact nature, this easyto-grow shrub flourishes in containers. If you think your garden is too small for a Hibiscus, this plant only grows 2 to 3 feet wide, and 10 to 16 feet high. Purple Pillar can be used as a screen, border, mass planting, or just alone as a dramatic point in the landscape. This sun-loving perennial is tough and stands up to heat and drought conditions. Purple Pillar starts producing summer flowers early, then blossoms through late fall. It’s an awesome addition to any garden or landscape. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

n the 1980s and ‘90s, many condominiums were built on Amelia Island Plantation. Beautifully sited with views of both the ocean and the canopy marshlands to the west, they have always been popular choices. Still highly desired, the condominiums have begged to be redesigned and redecorated. Amelia Island had been a favorite vacation spot for the Lowther family for years, so when they decided to invest in a condominium, they 67 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

focused on Amelia Island. After purchasing their first condominium, they soon realized they wanted a bigger one, which they could eventually make their primary home. Julia Hall Interiors, an Amelia Islandbased design firm, carefully designed the first condominium as a weekend retreat for the family. When a new larger condo became available, the family found, with some additions, that it was an easy transition to the larger new space. MARCH 2019

Starting with a basic sixth floor, three bedroom, oceanside condominium, Benjie McEntyre built on the relationship the family had with Julie Johnson, owner of Julia Hall Interiors. He re-imagined the condominium to create elegant yet comfortable spaces, maximizing the beauty of views on both the ocean and marsh sides of the condominium. Trusting the talented decorating duo, the couple challenged them to maximize storage and create a space that flowed room to room. This meant some reconstruction in the kitchen and bathrooms. The master bath in

particular required major renovations, completely reconfiguring a space that originally had a window that opened onto the master bedroom. In the bathrooms of both guest bedrooms, a combination of unique tiles creates a modern look. The small den bath that serves as the de facto powder room utilizes a large oversize mirror to create the sense of a bigger room. The reconfiguration offered significant changes to a dated condo layout. The original columns were removed and replaced by shiplap in a more contemporary geometric look.

Large-scale porcelain tile with the look of wood flooring is used throughout. This allows for a dog- and child-friendly living space. The most dramatic change transformed the typical counter and stools that separated the kitchen from the entryway into an open kitchen with a large 7Ă—9 island. With storage space a high priority, the cleverly designed kitchen maximizes all available space. Pozzi COFFEE WINE BAR & BISTRO Combining fresh, authentic ingredients and Old World artistry, Pozzi’s offers la dolce vita with a menu of classic cuisine and delicious coffee and espresso drinks. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

O

n the corner of 3rd and Ash Streets, Pozzi Coffee Wine Bar & Bistro is creating a new turn on timeless classics. Steve and Candy Pozzi have designed a portal into another place, with smart décor and an atmosphere that takes you to an Italian café on a busy European street. By day, coffee culture rules, but as the sun sets, a concentrated menu of bonafide American classics and old country culinary artistry takes center stage. I recently visited on a Sunday evening with my very good friend, Pirate alum, and the backbone of Fernandina Beach High’s school spirit, Mrs. Christie Frahm. We met as the sun was setting and the weekend bustle drawing to a close. Walking into the building, however, we were brought to attention by the arresting aroma of freshground coffee. Above the bar, How to Marry a Millionaire plays silently as the harmonies of the espresso machine and jazz music prepare the senses for a delicious meal. We were seated in the center of the room, where I could watch all the action on the line. Steve started us off by pouring a taste of their Corvo Rosa Rose. Unlike any that I’ve had, this Rose is Sicilian and has the refreshing tartness of under-ripe fruit and body to hold up against Steve’s Onion Soup, which he proudly served to start our meal. The onion soup is prepared by braising whole onions in their own juices, and the rest is a secret Steve has been perfecting since his days at Emerson’s Steakhouse. Along with the soup came a delightful charcuterie board. A staple on many menus these days, Pozzi’s dedication to a concise menu focused on authentic, highquality ngredients makes this dish a must-have. We enjoyed a true 600-day aged Proscuitto di Parma, Breseola, and Capicola, along with 24-month Parmigiana Reggiano, Gorgonzola dolce, and a French Chevre. The meats are sliced on a hand-cranked slicer, which slices them perfectly thin by an expertly sharp blade spinning at a rate slow enough that the friction of the blade doesn’t melt the fats in the meat. In other words: perfect ingredients, perfectly prepared. 74 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

For our entrees, we enjoyed a Surf and Turf. The dish included a Maryland-style crab cake made exclusively with jumbo lump crab that was all thriller and no filler, a roasted Maine lobster presented in its shell with drawn butter, and a certified Angus beef filet mignon. The filet was 8 ounces of grillroasted perfection, served simply without sauce or garnish. Our sides on this visit were saffron rice and roasted white asparagus. We shared this bonanza of food and enjoyed a Pecorino from Umani Ronchi that was floral on the nose with touches

of peach and citrus, accenting the sweetness of the lobster and crab, while not being intimidated by the beef. To finish the evening, we enjoyed an espresso-soaked Chocolate Cake and a Carrot Cake topped with crystalized threads of carrot with a delicious Counter Culture Cappuccino. As we were gathering our belongings to leave, Casablanca was on the screen and La Dolce Vita was on our minds. Pozzi Coffee Wine Bar & Bistro is located at 300 Ash Street and is open Wednesday through Sunday. Visit info@ pozzicoffeeandwinebar.com for reservations. MARCH 2019

ASADO, AMERICAN-STYLE Ingredients Any of your favorite meats, like chicken, chorizo, beef short ribs, pork ribs, flank steak, or whatever, enough for your guests to try a little of everything. Coarse sea salt Preparation Set your gas grill to low, or start your charcoal and keep it at a low heat, about 225 degrees F. Be sure to have an area on the grill where the meat doesn’t drip and cause a flare up. Cut meats into pieces easy to handle and salt them all over. You can place your meats on the grill at the same time, or a little at a time, taking the pieces off as they are ready to eat. Serve with chimichurri and salsa criolla.

y husband Troy and I are spending two months in Argentina this year, and what fun we’ve had delving into the food and culture of this beautiful and diverse country! Probably our favorite of the many traditional Argentine customs we’ve encountered is the asado, which is loosely translated as barbecue, although it’s truly much more. It’s a social gathering of friends and family, based around a parrilla, or grill, and its chef, an asador, who turns out a variety of grilled meats. An asado could go on for hours, beginning with pieces of chorizo served on crusty bread. The food that comes later includes meats like chicken, beef and pork ribs, goat, lamb, and even organ meats. This neverending meal features salads, breads, beer, and the inevitable Malbec, a red wine for which the country is well known.

Asado also includes chimichurri, an herb, garlic and olive oil sauce, and salsa criolla, a sauce of peppers, tomatoes, and onions in vinegar. An interesting fact we discovered about the way the meats are cooked is that Argentinians don’t marinate their meat, and they rarely use any spices except salt. The meat is meticulously cooked long and slow, never allowing the fat to burn on the coals. This makes the meat succulent and rich, not smoky and charred as we are used to in American barbecue. We’re looking forward to hosting our own asado party when we return to Amelia Island in April, and you can too! Just make sure you have good cuts of fresh meat, an experienced grill chef, a case of Malbec, and Argentine music. Your guests will love you for it!
