The Silver Anniversary Amelia Concours culminates Sunday with a display of three hundred rare and restored automotive gems on the fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia.

March is one of our favorite months on Amelia Island. With its arrival comes the much-anticipated end of winter, which invigorated us this year with temperatures that occasionally flirted with freezing. Beautifully blooming azaleas are one of our first clue that the weather is becoming favorable, and, here on Amelia Island, our second clue is that unmistakable harbinger of spring, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. Known affectionately around the world as “The Amelia,” this fabulous automobile show is a two-time winner of the Motoring Event of the Year at the prestigious International Historic Motoring Awards in London. Celebrating its silver anniversary this year, the Amelia Concours is a non-stop three-day extravaganza of everything automotive, with seminars, social events, road rallies, an automobile auction, Saturday’s “Cars & Coffee,” the Porsche Driving Experience, and, of course, all those beautiful automobiles. The event culminates Sunday with a display of three hundred rare and restored automotive gems on the fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia. These painstakingly restored classic cars represent almost every era of automobile production, including very early models, the great luxury cars of the 1930s, classic models from the 1950s and beyond, and even some of the best racing cars ever produced. The inclusion of racings cars and the stars of racing is one of the things that sets the Amelia Concours apart, earning it the nickname “The Racer’s Concours.” This year’s honoree is legendary American driver and team owner Roger Penske, affectionately known as “The Captain,” whose racing team has won a record 18 Indianapolis 500 victories. Congratulations to Bill Warner and his staff for presenting another spectacular Concours weekend. Over the past 24 years, Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance has given over $3.45 million dollars to local charities, including over $1 million dollars to Community Hospice & Palliative Care. Community Hospice has been an innovative leader in palliative and hospice care, as well as being an important provider of programs and services dealing with advanced illness here in Nassau County. In its 40-year history, Community Hospice has served over 200,000 adults and children in Nassau and the surrounding counties, including at the Warner Center, named in honor of Jane and Bill Warner, founders of the Amelia Concours, whose vision and generosity has helped fuel the success of Community Hospice. In addition this month, we meet some Fernandina Beach natives who are serving their country in the U.S. military around the world; enjoy another “Eyes to the Skies” feature on the rare but striking Reddish Egret; look ahead to the second season of the Amelia Island Dance Festival; learn to make a delicious cioppino, a fish stew that originated in San Francisco; and much more. See you around the island!

MARCH 5-8

One of the world’s top automotive events, the Amelia Concours returns for its Silver Anniversary edition with 2020 Honoree Roger Penske, the iconic Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow, and the team behind Porsche’s first Le Mans victory. BY TERI SOPP

T

he Silver Anniversary of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance will be held this year from March 5 to March 8 at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island and The Golf Club of Amelia Island. The theme this year’s Concours is “Visionary Leadership Through Innovation,” honoring four such visionaries: “The Captain” Roger Penske, legendary designer Harley Earl, the Mercedes-Benz engineers who created the iconic Silver Arrow, and the team behind Porsche’s first Le Mans victory. “In each of these instances,” notes Amelia Concours founder Bill Warner, “a culture has been created that accepts only the very best. The result is people who see themselves as members of an elite corps and work consistently to that high standard.” Warner, who founded the Amelia Concours 25 years ago, has grown the event to four fun-filled days of automotive happenings, including automobile rallies, the popular “Cars and Coffee” gathering for local enthusiasts, lectures, historical

collections, auctions and the final event—the Concours – at The Ritz-Carlton and on the fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia Island on Sunday, March 8. “Concours d’Elegance” literally means “competition of elegance,” and the idea dates back to 17th-century France, where elegant carriages were exhibited and judged. Wealthy Parisians paraded their horse-drawn carriages in the parks on holidays. Eventually, the carriages became horseless, and the event was often held in conjunction with automobile races. The oldest still-extant Concours, the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, is held annually near the Villa d’Este hotel in Cernobbio, on Lake Como in Italy. The first Concours was held in September 1929.. The first Concours in North America was held in 1950 at the Pebble Beach Golf Links in Monterey, California, in conjunction with the first Pebble Beach Road Race.

ROGER PENSKE HONORED AT THE 2020 AMELIA CONCOURS 2020 Amelia Concours Honoree Roger Penske won his first national championship – Sportscar Club of America D Modified – in 1961, racing a Maserati T61 and a Cooper Monaco, earning him “Driver of the Year” honors from Sports Illustrated. He retired from the cockpit with a stunning record of 51 victories in 130 races. He also logged top-five finishes in another 60 races. In 1966, he formed Roger Penske Racing, applying solid business practices and an insistence that every component of his racing organization be executed to the highest standards. Roger Penske Racing ultimately became Team Penske, which logged a stunning 18 Indianapolis 500 victories (a record), multiple wins in NASCAR, victory in the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 hours of Sebring, plus a trio of Trans-Am Championships. Penske delivered McLaren’s first Indy 500 victory in 1972 and Porsche’s first Can-Am title in the same year. In all, Penske racers have earned more than 500 race victories, 591 pole positions and 34 championships. The

five Penske Team Indianapolis 500 winners, including Team Penske’s first Indy winner from 1972 up through its 2019 winner, will be the center of attention at the Concours. “The cars of the Indy 500 have been a Penske tradition for half a century,” says Warner. “These teams have made history. It is truly an honor to have them all at our 25th anniversary event.” Roger Penske is not only one of the most recognizable names in American motorsports, but a man who commands respect in the international racing community as well. When he retired as one of America’s most successful young road racers in 1965, Penske was offered the ownership of a Philadelphia Chevrolet dealership. But racing remained a key element in Penske’s business plan. After forming Roger Penske Racing, he fielded Corvettes in the 1966 endurance races at Daytona and Sebring, then joined forces with driver Mark Donohue to campaign a Lola T70 in the United States Road Racing Championship and Can-Am sports car series. Penske Racing quickly found success with Donohue, winning two consecutive USRRC championships and three SCCA TransAm titles.

Below right: This year, the Concours celebrates the legendary cars of Sergio Scaglietti’s on the 100th anniversary of his birth, and will include cars like the iconic “pontoon-fender” 1957 Ferrari 250/Testa Rossa.

After three years racing sedans and sports cars, Penske Racing and Donohue made their debut in Indy car racing, running a pair of United States Auto Club-sanctioned road races in 1968. The following year, the team made its debut in the Indianapolis 500, where Donohue finished seventh and earned “Rookie-of-the-Year” honors. With Donohue, Penske Racing quickly made its mark in the USAC Championship Series utilizing high standards of car preparation, presentation, and development. Donohue finished second at Indianapolis in 1970 and he recorded the team’s first Championship Car victory in the Pocono 500 on July 3, 1971. Donohue earned Penske’s first Indianapolis 500 triumph less than a year later with an average speed that would remain the race record for a dozen years. Since then, Team Penske has become synonymous with Indy car racing, with more than 200 race victories, over 270 poles and 16 National Championships. Team Penske, however, is probably best known for its 18 Indianapolis 500 victories, four with driver Rick Mears and three with Brazilian driver Helio Castroneves.

THE CARS OF HARLEY EARL CLASS COME TO THE AMELIA CONCOURS This year the show also honors the cars of designer Harley Earl, the first head of automotive design at General Motors. Earl, who is heralded as the father of the “tailfin design,” spearheaded the design and marketing of concept cars for General Motors. Earl was the director of a Cadillac dealer’s custom design shop when he was observed at work by Carl Fisher and commissioned to do a special project. The Cars of Harley Earl class features the great stylist’s most famous dream cars and successful productions cars. “Winnowing that group down was no simple task,” laughs Warner. Eight decades ago, General Motors’ Art & Colour Section was the auto industry’s first attempt to invest the business of creating and selling automobiles with aesthetics as a marketable commodity. GM chief Alfred Sloan put Harley Earl in charge, and Earl changed the car business forever. Every American auto company followed his lead, employing designers who trained under or worked for Earl.

Below right: It’s not just cars at the Concours. This year’s Motorcycle Class will feature this feet-forward, hub-center steering front wheel 1922 Ner-A-Car, as well as other unique two-wheelers.

Earl created an industry within the biggest industry in the world, set the esthetic parameters for the American car industry, and led General Motors from a 12 per cent market share in the 1920s to a 55-plus per cent market penetration during the decade when he retired. For nearly four decades, Harley Earl was the arbiter of style for the entire American auto industry. In the decade before he reached GM’s mandatory retirement age of 65, he oversaw the creation and the rise of America’s storied and celebrated “tailfin era.” “Misterl,” as his disciples called him, left his mark on the American industry and on the GM Technical Center at Warren, Michigan, the definitive monument to Earl’s towering contributions to General Motors and the automobile industry.

BUICK CENTURY X FACTORY CUSTOM FROM BILL MITCHELL In addition, Buick’s unique and obscure Century X styling department custom will make its international Concours debut in the Silver Anniversary Amelia Concours d’Elegance’s Cars of Harley Earl class. Bill Mitchell was Harley Earl’s hand-picked successor at GM Design and Styling. Many described their collaboration as more of a father-son relationship. Mitchell was just 23 when Earl appointed him chief designer of Cadillac. His design of the 1938 Cadillac 60 Special

was a landmark. But Mitchell was a “Buick man” long before he became a man. His father was a Pennsylvania Buick dealer, and despite being the design prodigy given the reins of the Corporation’s premier car division and style leader, Mitchell ached to draw Buicks. Three years after returning to GM from Earl’s private design firm, he created the Buick Century X, a modified production car – “special order 90022” – a true factory custom with a lot of glamour. “Having the Century X on the field in the Cars of Harley Earl Class is the sort of thing we love to do,” says Warner. “Finding a rare and often obscure car that’s a solid part of automotive history entertains and educates. The Century X was found in pieces. Its restoration is an ‘Indiana Jones’ Class adventure story in automotive archeology. We’re grateful to the owner for allowing us to show it in the Cars of Harley Earl Class.”

CELEBRATING THE MERCEDES-BENZ SILVER ARROW AND PORSCHE’S FIRST VICTORY AT LE MANS In 1936, Mercedes-Benz created a racing department to design and build the mighty Silver Arrow—a department which created the template for professional racing operations and changed the grammar of racing car design, construction and management.

In 1937, 1938 and 1939, the Silver Arrow dominated the Grand Prix seasons with three new cars; in the 1950’s, a new generation of Silver Arrows won the 1952 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 1953 and 1955 Formula I World Championships and the 1955 World Sports Car Championship. The Silver Anniversary of Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance also coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of Porsche’s first (of nineteen) victories in the world’s most important and prestigious sports car race, the 24 Hours of LeMans. The LeMans, the world’s oldest sportscar endurance race, is widely considered the venue where endurance and efficiency shine brightest. Of course, it is also the subject of the new movie, Ford v. Ferrari, where Carroll Shelby’s famous Ford beat Ferrari. Under the direction of Porsche Chief Ferdinand Piech, the Porsche 917 won in 1969, then again in 1971. The international rules for endurance sports car racing were rewritten in 1972; Porsche turned their attention to North America’s unlimited Can-Am Championship, turbocharging

the 917 and forming an alliance with Team Penske. That coalition swept through the mega-dollar/mega horsepower Can Am series winning back-to-back titles in 1972 and 1973.

A RARE LOOK AT THE LOZIER A special class of Loziers will help celebrate the Silver Anniversary Amelia Concours. More than a century since Lozier left the American car catalog, Lozier is among the rarest of collectible cars. They were also the most expensive American automobile of the “brass era” and a rival of Rolls-Royce. But for the production strategy of Howard Marmon and Ray Harroun, Lozier may have occupied a platinum-plated niche in American history. They were fast and powerful cars. In 1911, Teddy Tetzlaff logged a stunning 100-mile speed record in a stock 49-horsepower Lozier at nearly 90 mph! Indy star Ralph Mumford won the 1910 305-mile Elgin Trophy plus the 1911 Vanderbilt Cup at Savannah at the near Indy 500-winning speed of 74.076 mph over a pair of Mercedes with his four-cylinder Lozier Type 46. summer, Lozier won the Fairmont Park (Philadelphia) round of the AAA National Championship and was named “Stock Car Road Champion of the World.” The most telling numbers in Lozier’s catalog were prices. When the average annual salary of an American worker was $750 and a Cadillac left the showroom for $1,600 and a Packard for $3,200, Loziers wore price tags as high as $7,500, a hefty six-figure price in today’s money. Lozier understood that their market was limited. Annual production peaked in 1912 at 600 cars. One year later, Lozier introduced the 88 horsepower Big Six with electric lights and a $5,000 price tag. That same year Lozier’s lead engineer left to form his own company. Tellingly, he took several key men with him to make high-quality cars below Lozier’s lofty prices. Lozier never recovered. In 1915, the company declared bankruptcy after building just a few thousand cars in a decade and a half. “Lozier might be the most ‘American’ marque of all,” says Bill Warner. “Loziers are big, fast, powerful, expensive and built to uncompromising standards. Yet now they’re all but unknown. They are rare and glorious cars; only about 30 are

thought to exist in America. They deserve a special place on The Amelia’s Silver Anniversary field.” The mission of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Foundation is to create a world-class motoring event that serves the community through education and charitable giving. In 2019, the Foundation donated $100,000 to Community Hospice & Palliative Care of Greater Jacksonville. In total, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Foundation has donated more than $3.5 million to local charities since 1996. “The Amelia is about celebrating rare and historicallysignificant automobiles, but it is people that make it special,” says Warner. “Being able to give back to the local community makes all of the work that our Board of Directors, staff and hundreds of volunteers invest worthwhile.” For more information and a complete schedule that includes RM Sotheby’s Auction, the Reliable Carriers’ Eight Flags Road Tour, Guardians of Porsche Wine Maker’s Dinner, Mercedes-Benz Gala, and many other events, visit the Concour’s website at www.ameliaconcours.org.

NATIVE AMERICAN ART EXHIBIT AT FERNANDINA BEACH LIBRARY When you imagine a Native American, you may think of a stoic warrior in an ornate headdress sitting on a horse, a woman wearing intricately beaded leather moccasins with a baby on her back, or men in loincloths canoeing down a river. In fact, Native Americans make up many different customs, languages, traditions, and arts, but one common thread is the Native American conception of art. Most Native American languages do not have a word for art. Instead, they find beauty by living in harmony with nature. From totem poles to blankets, Native Americans celebrate the everyday and find beauty all around them. For a unique, authentic experience this spring, visit the Friends of the Library’s “Native American Art” exhibit at the Fernandina Beach Library Community Room, where you will encounter Native American dreamcatchers, pictographs, prints, masks, rugs, rattles, shields, and Kachinas from the personal collections of local families. “Without the support of our community, this exhibit could not be possible,” says Christine W. Meehan, chair of the Friends of the Library Art Committee. Gallery hours are Wednesday 2 to 4 p.m. and Saturday 2 to 4 p.m through April 30. For more information about the exhibit, visit www.fernandinaFOL.org.

TRINITY HOBLIT FOUNDATION GALA RETURNS ON APRIL 4 Coming, April 4, the Trinity Love Hoblit Foundation presents its 4th annual Gala at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. The event includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, and entertainment, with proceeds benefitting the Trinity Hoblit Foundation, which supports and funds neurological research, training, treatment, and awareness for brain aneurysms, strokes, and other cerebrovascular conditions. Trinity Hoblit was born with a rare form of primordial dwarfism. Although small in stature, she had an enormous spirit that captured the hearts of everyone she met. At age nine, Trinity was diagnosed with multiple brain aneurysms. She passed away on June 30, 2015 at age fourteen. Trinity was an advocate of organ donation, and with her family’s support, she gave life to three donor recipients after her death. These three recipients are alive today as a result of Trinity and her family’s support, and the Hoblits continue to bless others through the work of the foundation. The Gala highlights music by multiple Grammy Award-winning Dave Yaden, a virtuosic piano player who has written and performed with Lady Antebellum, One Republic, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, and many others. Sponsorship and advertising opportunities are available. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.trinityhoblit.org.

ISLAND CHAMBER SINGERS PERFORM SPRING CONCERT AT AMELIA PLANTATION CHAPEL The Island Chamber Singers are ready to astound you once again with a concert featuring “A German Requiem” by Johannes Brahms, one of his signature works, accompanied by a 12-piece chamber orchestra. The “Requiem” was Brahms’ largescale masterpiece for chorus, orchestra, and soprano and baritone soloists. Originally written in German and composed of scriptures from both the Old and New Testaments, the Island Chamber Singers will sing an English score led by Founder and Director Dr. Jane Lindberg. Requiems usually follow the Order of the Mass and focus on the souls of the dead, but Brahms, who began writing the Requiem after his mother’s death in 1865, focused on scriptures that bring comfort to the living. Probably the most famous piece in the work is the Psalm, “How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place.” Concerts will be at Amelia Plantation Chapel on March 27 at 7 p.m. and March 29 at 3 p.m. Adult tickets are available for $20 at www.IslandChamberSingers. org, the Amelia Island Visitor Center, Peterbrooke Chocolatier, AIFBY Chamber of Commerce, and Harrison’s Mercantile. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $25. All students are free. For more information or to sing with the group, please call (904) 225-0575.

andra Hughes’s interest in art began at an early age, sparked by three small watercolors of the town of Bruges, Belgium, which hung over her grandmother’s sofa. Sandra wanted to step into the paintings. Sparked by those watercolors, Sandra’s desire to express herself visually through art began. Hanging in her home today, those special sketches are still enjoyed by Sandra and her family. Sandra’s knowledge of art has been acquired through many hours of rigorous self-study, as well as study with nationally known artists and instructors in Paris, where she lived for two years. Sketching in the Louvre and painting in Monet’s gardens fed her desire to translate nature’s beauty onto canvas. It also prompted her to open a successful gallery in Fernandina Beach after returning to the United States in 2003. Although her preferred medium then was watercolor, she also worked in acrylic, pastel, and occasionally, oil. After 20 years of watercolor, Sandra has transitioned to oils as part of her ongoing growth as an artist. She describes her work as “Contemporary Impressionism.”

Collections of her art can be found around the country, as well as in Europe and Asia. She is expressly grateful for the support and encouragement of friends, family, and collectors who have contributed to her success and fulfillment. Her husband, Bob, has recently built a private studio on their property on Amelia Island, which affords her the space and time to be creative “Being an early riser, I have time every morning to reflect and thank God for this wonderful gift of passion to express myself through art,” says Sandra. “For me, it is as necessary as breathing, and I am truly grateful for the guidance and direction He gives me. Without my husband’s and family’s undying support and encouragement, I couldn’t begin to dream and accomplish these statements on canvas.” In addition to her private home studio, Sandra’s work can be found at the Plantation Artists Gallery at 94 Amelia Village Circle. For a private showing of her work, email Sandra at sandra.p.hughes@icloud.com, call (904) 415-6575, or visit her website at www.sandrahughesart.com.

igi Grubner opened Amelia’s Fine Jewelry on historic Centre Street in 2007, offering unique, personal, and iconic pieces. “Amelia Island is a great place to live and work,” says Gigi. “Getting to know both locals and visitors makes every day special.” The store is well known for their trademark piece—a handmade pendant in the shape of Amelia Island with a diamond in the middle. “The pendant is solid 14 karat in white, pink, or yellow gold,” Gigi explains. The shop also offers a collection of certified authentic shipwreck coins, as well as ancient Greek and Roman coins minted in the BC era, which can be made into pendants, earrings, bracelets, and rings. The store also carries a fantastic line of sea life design jewelry, including their iconic sea turtle jewelry. Gigi’s selective jewelry consignment and large inventory of estate jewelry offers something for everyone. “Unique, personal, and fun is our motto,” says Gigi. “Our one-of-a-kind pieces make our store unique, and our friendly staff offers personal service in a relaxed island atmosphere.” The jewelers make custom-design jewelry and can also redesign, repair, or remount customers’ well-loved favorites. The Grubners love for Amelia Island shows in their carefully curated collection and in their delight in providing customers with “something just a little out of the ordinary.” Stop by the shop at 317 Centre Street, Suite B, or visit them on Facebook or at www.ameliasfinejewelry.com. serving our country As they serve our country around the world, Amelia Island’s servicemen and servicewomen challenge themselves, acquire new skills, and learn to put others first. BY JULIE SIMMONS

A

s we rise each morning on Amelia Island, we can watch the sun rise over the ocean and hear the birds welcome a new day. For most of us, we only occasionally stop to think about our fellow Amelia Islanders who live away from home in service to our country, waking up in the dark, sometimes to the shout of an order, and springing into the service to which they’ve pledged their lives. Meet Blake Jones, Instructor Pilot for the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III in the U.S. Air Force; Petty Officer 2nd Class Nathan Shiver, a member of the U.S. Navy’s submarine force; and Jordan Roehre, Hospital Corpsman U.S. Navy, who all hail from Fernandina Beach and are committed to serving those back home every single day. Jones, who has nearly 17 years of tenure, describes his journey. “I was in homeroom at Fernandina Beach Middle 35 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

School when the teacher informed us that a plane flew into the World Trade Center. I wanted to do something to serve my nation, and when I could I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. The ironic part is that I remember telling an Air Force recruiter to ‘get lost’ just a few months earlier!” Shiver, 2012 graduate of Fernandina Beach High School, credits his continued success to lessons learned back home. “I learned the importance of hard work from my father,” he says. And hard work is what its all about as an electrician’s mate, nuclear power, at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. “I see my work as part of a legacy that will last beyond my lifetime by providing the Navy our nation needs,” says Shiver. “In return, I get the opportunity to learn useful skills and provide a future for my daughter.” continued on next page. Jones agrees with the incredible opportunities the armed services have provided. “I began my career flying as an Air Surveillance Technician, which is like a mobile air traffic control, controlling hundreds of miles of airspace globally. This experience gave me the ‘aviation bug,’ and I wanted to become a pilot. After a lot of night school and sleepless studying, I earned my bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in 2010, and my pilot wings from Laughlin Air Force Base in 2012.” During his tours, Jones has traveled to over 47 countries, with Hungary being his favorite since it is the home of his future bride! Perhaps it’s not just what you get, but what you give that is most valuable thing to those serving. “The lessons that you gain by serving others are indescribable; there will always be something special about putting yourself second and others first,” says Jones. Roehre echoes this sentiment, recognizing that her time in the service prepared her for life more than she ever imagined. “I joined the Navy in 2016, and when I graduated to become a Hospital Corpsman, I thought it was the most incredible thing I could ever accomplish,” she smiles. “It’s a prestigious rate in the Navy, and while I’m proud of this, my highlight in life changed this past August when my daughter, Stevie, was born. The Navy taught me that I am part of something bigger than myself and to put others’ needs before my own, and this was perfect preparation for becoming a parent.” As this trio serves the nation, a piece of their hearts is always back home. “One of the best ways to support an enlisted individual is through prayers and communication,” says Roehre. And when they get home for a visit, Jones makes a beeline for some Moon River Pizza, T-Ray’s fried shrimp, oysters from Atlantic Seafood, and time with his mom. Roehre looks forward to homecooked meals, and the fried chicken from Publix! And all three agree that catching an Amelia Island sunrise and the feeling of ‘home’ is something to cherish.

What can 3D mammograms do for your peace of mind?

New breast imaging technique makes breast cancer easier to see and reduces false positives. 3D mammography (digital breast tomosynthesis) is approved by the FDA and is quickly becoming the standard of care for breast cancer screening. Because it’s a newer technology, 3D screening mammography is not available at all screening facilities – but it’s available at Baptist Medical Center Nassau. 3D screening mammography is different from a 2D mammogram: • 3D mammography makes it easier to see the layers of breast tissue, allowing for better cancer detection. • 2D mammograms take one picture across the entire breast, in two directions: top to bottom and side to side. Unclear or suspicious findings from 2D views can increase the need for additional imaging and also lead to more false positives.

3D mammography is designed to overcome these limitations. 3D imaging technology moves in an arc around the breast to take X-ray pictures from many angles in seconds. A computer quickly assembles the pictures to produce clear, highly focused 3D images. This allows the radiologist to view the entire breast, layer by layer, for a more accurate screening — especially important for anyone with dense breast tissue or patients with an increased risk of breast cancer. Schedule your 3D mammogram at Baptist Nassau today by calling 904.202.2222.

SAME-DAY OR NEXT-DAY APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE Schedule online or by phone today: baptistjax.com/3dmammo • 904.202.2222 © Baptist Health 2020

the rare

REDDISH EGRET

Always a rare sight in our local ecosystem, look for the striking Reddish Egret at dawn or near dusk near shallow salt or brackish water, and you may even see one dance. STORY AND PHOTOS BY GAIL PFOH

T

hey are tall, long-legged, have long, beautiful ‘hair,’ and they are great dancers! Who are they? They are Reddish Egrets, the rarest of all egrets in the United States and designated by the State of Florida as a threatened species. Keep your “eyes to the skies” because we are extremely fortunate to see them once in a while here on Amelia Island and in our surrounding ecosystem. This rare, beautiful wading bird comes in two color phases, or morphs. There is a dark morph and a white morph. According to Audubon’s Guide to North America Birds, either color morph can be born to any Reddish Egret parents. The egrets remain either the white or dark morph for the rest of their lives, beginning with their downy feathers as nestlings. The white morph is far more rare, and only a few exist in the entire Florida population of Reddish Egrets. The white morph has entirely white plumage and is sometimes confused with the Great Egret, which is also all white and found in abundance in our area. Although now the number of white-morph Reddish Egrets is very low, Audubon notes that the “white morph apparently made up a higher percentage of the total population prior to persecution by plume hunters” in the 1920’s and 1930’s. An easy way to spot a dark-morph Reddish Egret is to look near shallow salt or brackish coastal bodies of water in our area. Go just after dawn or late in the day near dusk when they are most active. probably first recognize one by its striking plumage colors of rust or red and its gray or slate-gray feathers, accompanied by a beautiful two-tone pink and black bill. What also stands out is the long, shaggy mane-like plumage on the neck of this egret. During courtship displays, the male of the species will stretch his head and neck upward and backward with shaggy feathers fully raised, then toss his head forward repeatedly. Once you spot a Reddish Egret, if he didn’t catch your eye with his rich colors, he will definitely make you take notice when he starts to dance! Yes, dance. Casual observers and birders alike will tell you that this egret has quite a unique foraging behavior, which will remind you of dancing. He loves to run through the water (often quite erratically) as he hunts for the small fish upon which he likes to feed. His hyperactive feeding behavior includes running, jumping, weaving, and zigzagging in the water. As he does this, he often spreads his wings into a sort of umbrella or canopy as he searches for prey. Audubon states that these egrets primarily eat small fish such as minnows, mullet, and killifish, as well as frogs, tadpoles, and crustaceans. The Avian Research and Conservation Institute (ARCI) is headquartered in Florida and studies the Reddish Egret. It notes that this egret “is a highly specialized feeder, ecologically restricted to a very narrow coastal habitat that is vulnerable to human disturbance, storm effects, and climate change. The Florida population is estimated at 350 to 400 pairs, with 100 to 125 in Florida Bay and the Florida Keys.” In conjunction with partners, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, ARCI gathers data on the movements of the egrets via satellite telemetry. It is hoped that this data can help address “important management topics, including habitat needs, seasonal movements, site fidelity, breeding effort, survivorship, and sources of mortality.” This information may unlock the key to the future of the rarest egret in the United States: our beautiful Reddish Egret.

Susie grew up in the area and graduated from Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, which paved the way for a full scholarship to study dance at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. A degree in hand, she began her career as a professional dance artist with the Paul Taylor Modern American Dance Company in New York City alongside her husband, Joe Gallerizzo. 51 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Academy, who continually encouraged her, agreeing that there is a local audience hungry to see dance and experience it in the theatre. In 2018, Susie decided to take the leap of faith. “Paul Taylor, who I danced for and who was a huge inspiration to me, passed away. I flew to New York City for his memorial, and it was there that I was overcome with a sense of purpose for my place in the dance world and my obligation to continue the craft and preserve the art.” And with that, the Amelia Island Dance Festival was conceived. “Preserving classical dance and its history goes hand-in-hand with fortifying dance educational programs for the next generation,” says Susie, sharing that dance is her passion, but education is her purpose. “The AIDF wants both—to bring world-class dance to our island for entertainment, but additionally, to engage the wider public through extensive dance education and community outreach.” The 2020 AIDF promises diversity with a wide variety of dance from classical ballet to modern to tap and even ballroom! The lineup so far includes performances by East by North Dance Theater, The Florida Ballet, Jacksonville Dance Theater, and a closing party at Kayak Amelia with live music, food trucks, and performances on the water with a floating stage! “We hope that the festival gives to the artists as much as we get,” shares Susie. “There is a lot of talent in Northeast Florida, and professional dance companies need support, too.” For more information on the festival and to purchase tickets, visit www.ameliaislanddancefestival.org.

The Florida House Inn BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTO BY JAN JOHANNES

T

he Florida House Inn is considered the oldest continuously run inn or rooming house operating in Florida. The main structure was built around 1857 by the Florida Railroad and initially provided housing for railroad employees. Its architectural style is vernacular with Greek Revival adaptations. The basic design is rectangular with a gabled roof. The doublegalleried porches are distinctive. The inn was an essential part of David Yulee’s ambitious efforts to establish Fernandina as a terminus for the state’s first trans-peninsular railroad. The Florida House was a center of activity and the primary place to stay for both employees and visitors. Florida’s first railroad linked Cedar Key and Fernandina. Yulee’s dream was connecting the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico by land to provide a safer and more direct route for the transport of goods. The dream was close to fruition when the Civil War abruptly stopped all forward progress, and much of the newly completed railroad was torn up for the war effort. The inn was a boarding house for Union officers during the Civil War. After the war, Major Leddy, the Provost Marshall of Northern Florida, and his wife bought the property and continued to operate it as a hotel. In 1865, they added living space for themselves and a dining room for guests. The dining

room proved very successful and served such notables as the Carnegies, Morgans and Duponts. The Carnegies were said to stay at the Florida House, play at the Palace Saloon and pray at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. The Florida House has never been a private residence, but has always offered rooms as an inn or a boarding house. It is one of the grand antebellum buildings remaining on Amelia Island. Several additions were made through the years to accommodate the popularity of the island and the inn. The building was refitted as apartments. In 1990, it was sold and entered into a long process of restoration and, eventually, opened as a popular bed & breakfast inn. The building has survived hurricanes, tough financial times, severe weather, and the Civil War. Its survival is testament to the quality of the original building. The inn is a veritable museum of events in Amelia Island’s history. It is said that José Marti planned his invasion of Cuba while staying at the Florida House in 1883. President Ulysses S. Grant entertained at the inn when visiting his friend, David Yulee. During the glory days of the movie industry in Jacksonville, notables who stayed at the Florida House included Laurel and Hardy and Mary Pickford.

in the garden Cape Honeysuckle

a few old favorites With spring in full bloom and garden shops full of new plants, don’t forget old favorites like Plumbago and Cape Honeysuckle to add color and texture to your garden. BY BETTY MORRELL

F

inally, spring is around the corner, and the garden shops are filled with beautiful shrubs and flowers in all colors. I enjoy just walking around and admiring them all. You can also find perennial flowers and bulbs that will work well in your gardens in summer and fall. I have been writing about a lot of new plants for your garden, but let’s not forget the wonderful old reliables that will fill your beds with color and texture. One easy-to-grow plant is Plumbago, which has clusters of beautiful sky-blue flowers. Plumbago flowers practically nonstop throughout the year. Grow this plant in full sun or light shade; it can tolerate full shade, but it won’t bloom as well. Although drought-tolerant, it needs water during dry spells. This flowering shrub will grow fastest and bloom best if watered through the season. You can prune Plumbago any time of the year. Butterflies and hummingbirds love this plant. It’s practically maintenance-free. You can grow it in containers, fertilizing regularly with a general-purpose fertilizer in

spring and summer. Watch the beautiful butterflies congregate around it. You can complement your Plumbago with other old favorites to create a classic color combo. Try adding Cape Honeysuckle (Tecomaria), Esperanza, or Purple-Leaf Canna. Cape Honeysuckle, another butterfly magnet, is a profuse bloomer, with striking flowers of bold red, orange, or yellow. It blooms off-and-on all year long. Cape Honeysuckle is easy to grow and can be treated the same as Plumbago. I have both Plumbago and Cape Honeysuckle in my garden. The Cape Honeysuckle has not stopped blooming, but I am going to have to trim some tree branches as my Plumbago is now getting too much shade and it isn’t blooming as much this year. Thankfully, the Pagoda

plants and Cape Honeysuckle keep a steady stream of beautiful butterflies and a few hummingbirds coming around. Esperanza is also known as Yellow Bells, Hardy Yellow Trumpet, or Yellow Alder. It is recognized by its large masses of lightly scented gold-yellow trumpet-shaped flowers surrounded by dark green foliage. The plant was once used for medicinal purposes, including brewing beer from its roots. It blooms from spring through fall, and it pairs well with Plumbago and Cape Honeysuckle in the garden. Yellow Bells also attracts butterflies. Plant it in full sun, although afternoon shade is fine. Esperanza is a low-maintenance plant once it is established. It requires watering once a week during hot, dry weather, as well as a general-purpose fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks. This plant produces bean-like seed pods. Remove them as they appear for continued blooming. Trim this one to desired shape and size in early spring. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

im and Suzi Hocker, Midwesterners at heart, have found their retirement home in Amelia Island Plantation. Both Jim and Suzi grew up in a small town in central Illinois and have always lived within 30 miles of their hometown, except when Jim was completing his residency and fellowship in Pediatrics and Neonatology. He spent his career at OSF Healthcare St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois. Their two children, Sydney, 30, and MARCH 2020

Nathan, 27, are both married and still living in the Midwest. Sydney is a social worker in Carbondale, Illinois, and Nathan is a first-year internal medicine resident in Iowa City, Iowa. The Hockers’ pets include Sammy, an 11-year-old miniature poodle, and Jett, a black cat that Jim found as a three-weekold kitten. The couple first discovered Amelia Island while visiting friends from Peoria who had a vacation home on the island. They immediately loved the island and all that it offered. Jim, a golf enthusiast, especially appreciated the outstanding golf courses on the island. By 2003, they had bought their first home and began visiting regularly, sharing it with friends and family. When they decided to move to the island full-time, they began to search for a house that would meet all their needs. 66 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Suzi watched the real estate market carefully, and when she visited the island, she had a list of houses to share with her realtor, Claudia Watts of Coldwell Banker The Amelia Group. Ironically, when the couple found the perfect house, it was right next door to the house where they first stayed with friends on the island! As a dedicated golfer, Jim appreciates living on the tenth hole of the Oak Marsh Golf Course. The couple enjoys the view, and they have quite a collection of stray golf balls. Suzi’s touch is felt in every room. Her love of rich color is evident throughout the two-story house. “I like warm colors —rusts, tans, oranges, and golds—even though the ‘experts’ probably say that Florida homes should be decorated with ‘cool’ colors.” She made a few changes to the house that fit with her sense of style, like changing the light maple cabinets in the kitchen to a darker finish to match the flooring. The house is rich in detail, with built-in bookshelves and crown molding throughout. The original owner, a builder, added many unusual and original details. A stained glass door opens from the main living area into the first-floor master suite. On the second floor, what appears to be a bookcase is actually a door that opens to a bonus room over the garage of the home. An extra garage once housed a motor home, and it is now the perfect storage area for Suzi’s holiday decorations, which include amazing Christmas collectibles. Suzi first started Christmas decoration collecting in 1984, the year the couple got married. Her sister gifted her with a Hallmark “12 Days of Christmas” series. This began a lifetime of accumulating holiday collections, which include Hallmark ornaments, Department 56, North Pole Village, Cherished Teddies, and Boyd’s Bears. The Hockers look forward to sharing their decorated home each holiday season.

Suzi treasures family heirlooms and mementos. Bookshelf treasures include a classic black leather doctor’s bag that was left to Jim by the family doctor that took care of his family while he was growing up. Other treasures on the shelves of the den include Suzi’s grandmother’s sewing machine, her mother’s typewriter, family bibles, and a Chicago Bear’s football helmet from the 1985 Super Bowl winning team signed by players—a gift from Jim’s office when he retired. The dining furniture is a beautifully restored table, and the lovely china cabinet belonged to Suzi’s great grandmother. The maple dining table has additional leaves which allow the table to seat 16 for special occasions. The antique china in the 70 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

cabinet also belonged to Suzi’s great-grandmother. The pattern is Pope Gosser Flora Bell from early 1930’s. Despite its size, the 4,500 square foot house has a homey feel. The couple can live comfortably on the first floor, and when guests and family arrive, three bedrooms with baths await them on the second floor. A bonus is the flexible room over the garage that can be an additional guest room, a place for workout equipment, and extra storage. Suzi and Jim envision it as the perfect space for future grandchildren. The couple has settled comfortably into their home-awayfrom-home. They travel back to their Midwestern roots, but they are always happy to return to their home on Amelia Island. MARCH 2020

ife doesn’t always allow us a lot of free time, but every now and then, we’re reminded to slow down and make time for what is important. Running into an old friend is just the thing to bring our priorities into focus. And so it was on a busy Friday recently when I dropped by Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro for a bite to eat on my way out of town. Joe’s Bistro is located at 14 South 2nd Street in downtown Fernandina Beach and has defined quality on the local culinary scene for more than 20 years. Chef Ricky Pigg is an island native. He and his wife, Mari, cultivate relationships with their customers, making every experience at Joe’s Bistro memorable. On this particular day, I was looking forward to a weekend paddling on the Withlacoochie River, but I was starving and needed to stop in and see Ricky before hitting the road. I tried to slip in the back door like I did in the old days, but it was locked and I had to come in through the front door like a good boy. I said hello to the hostess, a former student, and made my way to the kitchen to find the chef and his crew busily preparing for the coming lunch rush. I hid in a little nook between the ice machine and the sink and tried to stay out of the way. The lunch menu at Joe’s Bistro has something for everyone. It includes standards like Crab Cakes and Caesar Salad, and more intriguing options like an Ahi Tuna Martini or Chicken and Andouille Wontons. Ricky figures they’ve made over 58,000 wontons in the last two years; they’re pretty popular. The menu also features delicious entrees like the Fernandina Mac & Cheese with Fresh Lobster, Shrimp with Penne and a Three-Cheese Sauce, and a Petit Filet Mignon. I opted for the Grilled Salmon BLT. The Grilled Salmon BLT is served on thick-sliced whole wheat toast, with a tangy remoulade sauce, crisp micro greens, tomato, applewood smoked bacon, and feta, with the fillet of perfectly grilled Nova Scotia salmon. I took my sandwich with 72 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

a side of crunchy-hot fries and ducked out into the dining room to enjoy it. Eating in the dining room feels a bit like eating in Ricky and Mari’s home; it has a white linen aesthetic with a kitchen table feel. As I finished my lunch, Ricky came out and joined me for a few minutes and we had a chance to catch up before things really got going. We talked about the sense of camaraderie the restaurants downtown share, which is fairly uncommon. He talked about his love of community, and how he enjoys

nurturing local talent to grow into the next generation of restaurateurs and chefs. As these words left his mouth, as if on cue, another former student appeared at the hostess stand, this time for an application to work in the kitchen. The future is in good hands. Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro is open for lunch and dinner six days a week, closed on Tuesdays. They have banquet space available upstairs and a full bar. Make a reservation or just drop in anytime. FALLING IN LOVE WITH

Cioppino BY KAREN MILLER

T

een and Jeff Peterson have shared a lifetime of romance, travel, food, and fun over the past 50-years, having lived in many places and experienced countless adventures. But their favorite thing to do is cook and serve food to the people they love, and recently, the Petersons invited my husband and me for dinner, featuring Jeff’s famous Cioppino. Cioppino was developed in San Francisco in the late 1800s by Italian immigrant fishermen, who shared their catches with one another so that everyone had enough to eat. They created a fish stew with an Italian flair, featuring garlic, tomatoes, and oregano. Cioppino is not for the faint of heart, as it takes an entire day to shop and prepare the stew. Jeff and Teen tell a funny tale of cooking Cioppino with their friend, Neil Wilding, when Neil and his wife, Joyce, came

to visit. The two men went to every grocery store on Amelia Island to purchase the ingredients, including Atlantic Seafood, where a pelican strode into the market and began helping himself to the catch of the day. Shopkeepers ran off the pelican, while Jeff and Neil laughed in delight! Cioppino is different each time you cook it, as you are looking for the very freshest fish you can possibly get; substituting your favorite seafood, like squid or cod is perfectly okay. Jeff likes to simmer shrimp shells in vegetable broth before straining it into the stew, imparting an even more complex flavor. Teen and Jeff served their Cioppino in large bowls with crusty bread and a simple green salad, and it was one of the best meals we’ve ever eaten. We fell in love with Cioppino that night, and hope that you will, too!

92 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

MARCH 2020

CIOPPINO Ingredients 4 garlic cloves, minced 2 onions, finely chopped 1 bay leaf 1 tsp. dried oregano 1 tsp. red pepper flakes 1 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. black pepper 1/4 cup olive oil 1 green pepper, diced 2 tbsp. tomato paste 1 1/2 cup dry red wine, like Chianti Three 14.5 oz. cans fire roasted tomatoes 1 cup bottled clam juice 1 cup veggie broth 1 lb. crab meat 18 small littleneck clams, or mussels, or both 1 lb. skinless halibut or red snapper 1 lb. large shrimp, peeled and deveined 3/4 lb. sea scallops 1/4 cup chopped Italian parsley 3 tbsp. chopped basil Preparation Cook the first seven ingredients in olive oil in an 8-quart heavy pot over medium heat, stirring until onions are softened. Add green pepper and tomato paste and cook for 1 minute. Add wine and boil until reduced by half. Add tomatoes with their juice, clam juice, and veggie broth, then simmer, covered, for 30 minutes. While stew is simmering, add crab and clams (or mussels) to the stew and simmer until clams open, transferring the clams to a bowl with tongs. (Discard any unopened clams.) Lightly season fish fillets, shrimp, and scallops with salt and add to the stew, simmering until just cooked through, about 5-minutes. Discard bay leaf, then return clams or mussels to the pot, along with parsley and basil. Serve in bowls with lots of bread for dipping, along with a good bottle of Chianti.
