Nestled west of South 8th Street not far from downtown Fernandina Beach, the Peck Center is a stately building that attracts notice. The Peck Center is a multi-use facility that houses a couple of City of Fernandina Beach offices, some non-profit organizations, and is a venue for various classes, programs, and events. In front of the building is a stone marker erected by the Florida Historical Society, which attracted the attention of Mandy Haynes, a recent transplant to Amelia Island and a regular contributor to the Islander. Like many recent arrivals, Mandy was intrigued by the building. She was interested to learn that it was once a school and an important part of Fernandina’s history. Peck High School, now the Peck Center, was the African-American high school on Amelia Island in the days of segregation. Peck was a Rosenwald School, one of the more than 5,300 schools and auxiliary buildings for black children erected by the Rosenwald Foundation in the South from 1912 to 1932 during the Jim Crow era. Julius Rosenwald, president of Sears, Roebuck & Company, partnered with Booker T. Washington on this critically important school-building initiative. Once built, the school buildings often became the social centers of their African-American communities. The original school building for African American children in Fernandina was a fourroom building known as Colored School No. 1, which opened in 1885. Professor William H. Peck, a Howard University graduate, became assistant principal two years later, then principal in 1888. Decades later, the Rosenwald Foundation contributed $20,000 for the construction of a new school, with the remaining $39,000 raised within the black community of Fernandina under the guidance of Professor Peck. The new school was completed in 1927. Colored School No. 1 had been renamed for Peck in 1911, and Peck High School was in use for 49 years until it was closed in 1976 following the integration of the public schools. With her curiosity piqued, Mandy decided to take a closer look at the history of Peck High School. After talking with a number of Peck graduates, Mandy shares the history of the school, describing a lively and supportive school community that was in many ways more like a large extended family, and looks at the changes brought by the closing of the school. Peck High School remains a vital piece of Fernandina’s history. hree years ago, I decided to make Fernandina Beach my home. On the first walk around our new neighborhood, my dogs and I were drawn to an impressive red brick building on South 10th Street. It is a fine building, one that stands tall and proud in the shade of several large oaks. I knew it had a story to tell and I was not disappointed when I read the Florida Historical Marker positioned in front of the building. Intrigued by what I had learned, I hurried home to find out more. Peck High School was a Rosenwald School, which sent me on a search to learn everything I could about the Rosenwald Foundation. The Rosenwald Foundation erected more than 5,300 schools and auxiliary buildings for black 11 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
children in the South between 1912 and 1932 during the Jim Crow era. This school-building program began when Booker T. Washington, who was the principal of Tuskegee Institute, partnered with Julius Rosenwald, president of Sears, Roebuck & Company. By requiring communities to raise matching funds, the two men inspired a grassroots movement that built schools in 15 Southern states. The schools were designed with the students in mind, for example, using natural light to protect the children’s eyesight and providing adequate space for learning. These buildings, which were the social centers of their African-American communities, were also used to set standards for white schools. MARCH 2021

The original school building for African Americans in Fernandina, a four-room building known as Colored School No. 1, opened in 1885 with Professor Moses H. Payne, a Howard University graduate, as the first principal and teacher. Two years later, Professor William H. Peck, also a Howard graduate, became the assistant principal. Payne passed away in 1888, and Professor Peck was promoted. He developed the high school’s curriculum, and in 1891, the school graduated its first senior class. Eighteen years later, in 1909, four acres of property on South 10th Street were purchased, and Professor Peck went to work gathering support from the community and the Rosenwald Foundation to build a larger school. He needed to raise $59,000. The Rosenwald Foundation contributed $20,000 and the remaining $39,000 was raised within the black community under the guidance of Professor Peck. Colored School No. 1 was renamed for Peck in 1911, and the new school was completed in 1927. Professor William H. Peck died in 1950. was recognized in the state’s Great Floridians 2000 program. Peck High School was in use for 49 years until it was closed completely in 1976 due to integration.
A COMMUNITY LIKE AN EXTENDED FAMILY I wondered what life was like for the students at Peck High School, so I started collecting names and making phone calls. The first person I contacted was Cheryl Henderson, who now lives in Georgia. Henderson was a senior the last year that Peck High School held high school classes. She graduated in 1969. “I feel very fortunate to have graduated from Peck. I’m not sure I would have finished school had I changed to Fernandina Beach High my senior year,” says Henderson. “I never felt discriminated against in our segregated community, but lower classman who integrated were not treated fairly. Students who would have graduated with honors at Peck were treated as if they weren’t as smart as the white students.” “We were never faced with racism at Peck. It was more than a school; it was a community. We weren’t exposed to drugs, we MARCH 2021

weren’t promiscuous or anything like that, because our teachers were members of our churches. They were friends with our parents, and our parents all knew each other. We were one big family, and we were raised to be respectful,” says Henderson. She laughingly told me that she once got a spanking for not saying “hello” to two ladies sitting on their porch when she walked by. She said the two ladies were talking to each other and she didn’t think they noticed her, “But they did, and they called my grandmother, who was waiting for me on the porch when I got home. She wanted to know why I hadn’t said ‘hello.’ Like I said, we were raised to be respectful.” Cheryl and I talked for a while about how things have changed. “Until this past year, I didn’t realize that racism was still such an issue. I mean, I knew it existed, but I thought things had gotten better. Watching the events on the news brought back old memories. When I was young, my cousins and I would go downtown to Gene’s for cherry Cokes. There was one small table with four chairs in the back where we could sit. I never paid much attention because it was just the way it was. 14 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
“When I came back to visit in 1971 after moving to Miami to go to college, I stopped in a local drugstore and sat at the counter to order lunch. I was told that the grill was down. I later realized they didn’t want to serve me,” says Henderson.
FOND MEMORIES OF PECK HIGH SCHOOL I was able to reach three more former students of Peck. Johnnie “Lin” Robinson and Spencer Clayton who graduated in 1967, and Neil Frink, graduated in 1959. Mr. Frink is also an advisory member for the Peck Center Committee. We made plans to meet at Peck the following week. When we met in the auditorium, named after former teacher and historian Willie Mae Hardy Ashley, I was pleased that four more former students of Peck High School had joined them: Robert Blue, Class of 1965; Wanda Blue, Class of 1970; Louryne Spaulding, Class of 1965; and Alvin Williams, Class of 1969. I only had to ask one question to get the conversation started. What did Peck High School mean to you? “Peck was more than just a school—it was family,” says Frink. “It was MARCH 2021

church for all of us. It brought everyone together.” “We did everything here,” adds Wanda Blue. “From May Day programs, operettas, and plays, we did it all right here.” “The auditorium was our movie theater,” Robinson says, pointing towards the vents high on the wall opposite of the stage. “There was a space up there where they played movies and had spotlights for the stage when we had plays. We had freshman sock hops, dances, graduations, and many other events in the auditorium. And the courtyard was where everything happened. I used to love standing on the balcony. I mean, who else had a balcony at their school?” “There was no ‘high drop-out rate’ like you hear about now days. Everyone took pride in going to school and wanted to graduate from Peck,” says Clayton. As well they should. Thanks to Principal A. Quinn Jones and his dedication to the success of both teachers and students, Peck High School became an accredited school in the 1950s. He was the principal from 1948 until 1957. The students, in spite of getting hand-me-down books and passed-down school buses from the other schools, received a first-rate education. 16 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
“You were taught respect. The male teachers did not let you disrespect the women teachers or the female students. The teachers were our parents away from home,” says Robinson. “You never heard about economic status,” says Robert Blue. “Nobody worried about how much money you had or how you lived. We were in our own little world and we were happy with it.” “From Gum Street all the way back to Elm Street was Peck,” says Clayton. “It was the center of our community.” “And news traveled fast. You better believe if you acted up, your mama would know about it before you got home,” Williams laughs. “And this was back before cell phones!” They told stories about playing basketball on the outside court before the gymnasium was completed in 1956. The first court was clay, then the second was cement. Fire barrels (55 gallon drums filled with firewood) were used to keep the athletes and spectators warm during games. “Once the gymnasium was finished, every district tournament, and just about every state tournament, was held in Fernandina because Peck had better facilities than other black MARCH 2021

schools in the area. Green Cove Springs, Pine Forest, and several other black high schools were still playing on clay courts. There were so many tournament games that we used both our outside court and the new one inside the gym,” remembers Clayton. “People in our community opened their homes to everyone who traveled here for the tournaments because they weren’t allowed in the motels,” says Robinson. “Back then, we all took care of each other. No one went hungry or without a place to stay.”
INTEGRATION BEGINS WITH CLASS OF 1970 Wanda Blue, who graduated in 1970, was part of the forced transition. “Because of the excellent education I’d received at Peck, I tested out of English, Math, and History for my senior year. Due to the classes at Fernandina Beach High School being overcrowded when the schools integrated, I would finish my work at Fernandina Beach High, then come over to Peck and sit with Mrs. Kennedy for the rest of the school day. The classes I took at Fernandina Beach High were P.E., Chemistry, and a half-year of ‘Americanism vs. Communism,’” remembers 18 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Once basketball season started, she’d go back to Fernandina Beach High for practice. “Nassau County wasn’t ready to integrate; there wasn’t enough room at Southside Elementary to house all the kids, so third graders stayed at Peck until 1976. The vocational classes—Automotive, Industrial Arts, Refrigeration, and Home Economics—stayed, too,” she adds. “Plus, the brand-new Science Suite,” Louryne remembers sadly, “but it wasn’t used after 1969.” Johnnie Robinson, Sr. was one of the teachers that left an impact on the students. He was the first coach (football and basketball), taught Math, Art, and Social Studies, and was a mentor to the kids. “We called him the ‘X’s and O’s man,’” says Frink, “He did everything.” “When the school was integrated, a lot of our teachers were displaced. Our P.E. teacher didn’t have a job anymore. Mr. Albert and Mrs. Owens, our Science and English teachers, ended up going to the Junior High School. Mr. Robinson was a floater for the first year before they found a place for him,” says Wanda. MARCH 2021

In 1976, the building that was once a great source of pride for Fernandina’s African-American community was left vacant, and soon it started to show signs of neglect. “When you lose such an important part of the community, you lose more than just a building,” says Clayton. “When Peck High School was deteriorating, it felt like our neighborhood, our worth, was too. It happens in towns like this all over the country, and it’s a shame.” Members of the community came together in the early 1980s and campaigned to save Peck High School. In 1989, the Nassau County School Board transferred ownership to the city, and the state awarded grants to restore the building. Renovations were completed in 1996, and in 2010, the Peck High School building was included in the city’s local Historic District.
THE PECK CENTER TODAY Today, the building is known as the Peck Center, and it is used for different events, classes, and recreational activities. It 20 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

is also home to several City of Fernandina Beach offices and non-profits. In 2019, the Peck Library was officially renamed the Ernie Tyson Albert Library. Ms. Albert, who graduated from Peck High School in 1949, is a great role model for us all. A mentor, friend, and teacher, she has dedicated thousands of volunteer hours to help the youth of Fernandina Beach. “In 2020, the Peck Gymnasium was renamed for former coach Nelson P. Williams,” said Spaulding. “He was a phenomenal coach, but he was much more than that. He’s part of our history.” Thanks to the dedication, determination, and hard work of the Peck Alumni Association, Peck High School received a Florida Historical Marker in 2016. It was that marker which caught my eye and started me on the path to discover more about the proud-looking building on South 10th Street and the people who called it home. BAPTIST MEDICAL CENTER NASSAU RECEIVES PATIENT SAFETY AWARD Amelia Island’s Baptist Medical Center Nassau received an “A” for patient safety, the highest grade possible, in the fall 2020 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades. The designation recognizes Baptist Nassau’s efforts in protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care. “Above all else, patient safety is our No. 1 priority,” says Michael A. Mayo, FACHE, hospital president of Baptist Jacksonville. “Our patients and their families rely on us to deliver safe, high-quality care and help them live their healthiest lives. We are honored to receive top marks for the efforts of our exceptional team members.” To ensure all patients remain protected throughout their healing process, several enhanced safety measures were implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. From setting up COVID-19 positive isolation units to using improved sanitation and additional personal protective equipment, Baptist Health’s safety initiatives helped assure patients and their families that the health system was ready to provide safe, comprehensive care to the community, despite the pandemic. KEEP NASSAU BEAUTIFUL DISTRIBUTES 500 TREES FOR ARBOR DAY Florida Arbor Day is celebrated annually on the third Friday in January. In 2021, Keep Nassau Beautiful (KNB) celebrated the day with their second annual Adopt-ATree project. During the inaugural event in 2020, KNB distributed over 340 trees to residents, and this year, they met a new milestone by sharing 500 trees with our community. To coordinate distribution, over 40 volunteers logged 180 hours of service in three drive-through events loading trees into vehicles. “Keep Nassau Beautiful is fortunate again this year to have the support of Rayonier, Rayonier Advanced Materials, Liberty Landscape Supply, Florida Department of Transportation, Nassau County Board of County Commissioners, Fernandina Beach City Commissioners, the Callahan Masonic Lodge, individual donors, and our many hearty volunteers,” says Kelley McCarter, KNB Board Member and Adopt-A-Tree Project Chair. changing of the guard An Amelia Island icon, The Fairbanks House has new owners, Rob and Yvonne Batterton and their son, Finn, who look forward to continuing the inn’s tradition of luxury. BY DICKIE ANDERSON
O
ne of the Historic District’s most treasured Victorian-era houses, The Fairbanks House on S. 7th Street, has new innkeepers. For more than 25 years, Teresa and Bill Hamilton lovingly cared for one of downtown Fernandina Beach’s most recognizable icons. They are now enjoying a well-earned retirement. The new owners, Rob and Yvonne Batterton and their son, Finn, have moved coast-to-coast from San Francisco to begin a new adventure operating one of Amelia Island’s most popular bed-and-breakfast inns. Built in 1885 by George Fairbanks and designed by architect Robert S. Schuyler, the house has enjoyed many lives, first as a private residence for the Fairbanks family, later as a rooming house, and more recently, as a luxury bed-andbreakfast inn. A fine example of Italianate design, her colors— deep green, mustard, and red accents—are close to the original colors chosen by George Fairbanks in 1885. Why Amelia Island, Florida after the family had lived in California for all their lives? The Battertons were ready for a 33 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
change, and they looked at possibilities all over the world, including at a number of castles and monasteries. The family has a passion for things that are old, particularly houses and antiques. Their son, Finn, 27, has a degree in architectural history from the University of California at Berkeley. The Fairbanks House offered so much to these lovers of history, including 12-foot ceilings, dormers, bay windows, massive chimneys (fireplaces in every major room), an oriole window, and a soaring tower. So who originally built the house? George Fairbanks was a dynamic man who lived in an amazing period in Florida’s history and was a proud and active participant. He served as a state senator from 1846 to 1848. He was a founder of the Florida Historical Society and served as the organization’s first president when the Society reorganized in 1902. Originally from New York, Fairbanks was a fruit grower, a noted historian, a lawyer, an editor of the Florida Mirror (now the Fernandina continued on next page.

Once the Battersons found The Fairbanks House, they were so sure of their decision to come to Amelia Island that they bought it sight unseen, except for the online photos and videos that were shared. The Battersons welcomed their first guests in December last year. Despite the COVID pandemic, business has been very good. Extraordinary efforts have been made to reassure guests that every precaution has been taken to offer them the safest getaway possible. Guests can choose from a variety of large guest rooms, luxurious suites, or private cottages. There are five guest rooms and four suites, each with its own unique decorating and detailing. Each room has a private bath ensuite with a shower, Jacuzzi, or Victorian soaking tub. The Fairbanks House has a lovely pool, and the inn is within walking distance of Centre Street with its delightful mix of shops, bars, and restaurants. Popular weekend options include elopement, honeymoon, and anniversary packages. The Elopement Package includes a ceremony in the gazebo in The Fairbanks House’s private garden, an officiant, photography by the innkeeper, Historic District tour after the ceremony, dinner for two at David’s Restaurant, wedding cake, and champagne. Everything is taken care of, including gratuities. No wedding planner needed! The move has been a good one. The Battertons have settled into their new home and are enjoying being innkeepers. Neighbors were quick to welcome the new family. “One of the biggest surprises we found coming here from California is how genuinely friendly everybody has been,” says Rob. assau County has grown dramatically, and so have the needs of the county’s senior population. Janice Ancrum, president and CEO of Nassau County Council on Aging, is a strong and talented woman who has guided the dramatic growth of this critical organization serving our seniors, including the move to its current 25,000-square-foot home in the old Rayonier Building. In addition, the Hilliard Life Center will be opening a newly renovated facility later this summer. Janice was born and raised on Amelia Island. Her love for the island is apparent as she recalls her childhood growing up on Broome Street in Amelia Island’s Historic District. She remembers summers on Cumberland Island, staying with her grandmother and uncle, who were cooks at the Greyfield Inn, and exploring that magical island. Her education and career took her away from Amelia Island, but she always knew she would return. After graduating from Fernandina Beach High School, Janice earned a college scholarship awarded by Rayonier. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Florida and went on to complete a number of leadership programs, including at the University of North Florida and Florida Community College in Jacksonville. Janice has spent her career dedicated to helping people. Working in different positions for the State of Florida early in her career, she focused on helping both employers fill job vacancies and job seekers find employment. She worked to get individuals into training programs, getting them to school, and helping women get into non-traditional jobs such as truck driving and welding. She made a difference in many lives. For 15 years, she commuted to Jacksonville while working for Community Connections of Jacksonville (formerly the YWCA), helping homeless women and children become self-sufficient, as well as operating summer camps and school programs. 41 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
Then the perfect job materialized. Janice could return to Amelia Island and be part of implementing the Council on Aging’s expanded vision. Once hired as president and CEO, her first challenge was to coordinate their much-needed move to a bigger facility and dramatically expand their services. She smiles as she recalls working one summer as a teenager at the Council on Aging. Back then she was pulling weeds; now she is fighting as an advocate for seniors and making a difference in their lives. Janice has always lived in Fernandina Beach, even though it meant long commutes to Jacksonville, and she loves it. “I’m grateful when newcomers tell me that they’ve lived many places around the country, but Fernandina is the best place they’ve ever lived. I’ve always known that!” One of Ancrum’s biggest challenges came with COVID-19. Suddenly the Life Center closed, and many of its services ceased. The challenges were met with an aggressive boots-on-the-ground initiative. The first and biggest focus was getting Meals on Wheels to seniors in need and to those afraid to go out. The number of meals delivered went from 32,000 in 2019 to 93,000 in 2020.The Life Center also ramped up their Telephone Reassurance Program after the stay-at-home order, as volunteers and staff touched hundreds of seniors, providing a lifeline of care, compassion, and conversation. Janice will be the first to give credit to her staff of 100 and the more than 300 volunteers who passionately give their time to make things better for community seniors. She has a daughter Janeecee and 16-year-old grandson. Her Dad lives with her now, and one of her greatest pleasures is listening to his stories of growing up in the 1940’s and 1950’s. MARCH 2021

25Young Years After opening in 1996, Monkey Barrel Children’s Store celebrates 25 years as an Amelia Island favorite, with distinctive clothes and toys in a new, expanded location. BY JULIE SIMMONS PHOTOS BY LYNN TENNILLE PHOTOGRAPHY

hen Bonnie and Rob Southwick came to Amelia Island in 1996, they discovered a brand-new children’s shop called Monkey Barrel, which had perfect apparel for their new baby girl. “There wasn’t an Easter, Christmas, or birthday that passed without a visit to Monkey Barrel for something fancy for my daughter, and later a matching sibling outfit for my son,” Bonnie remembers with a smile. Fast forward 25 years, and not only is Bonnie singing “Happy 25th Birthday” to her daughter, but she’s also blowing out the candles on the cake for her newest baby – the Monkey Barrel Children’s Store. “At the end of 2016, I heard through the grapevine that Dina Martin, the founder of Monkey Barrel, was looking to transition to new things. My youngest was headed to college, and I was ready to do something new, too! It was a win-win for both Dina and me to pass the keys to the store onto our family.” “Although I was elated about my new store, I was terrified,” Bonnie confesses. “I had a little front desk retail experience, but the backend of buying and merchandising the clothes and toys was brand new. I could not have asked for a better mentor than Dina. She took me under her wing, guided me through my first visits to the marts, and showed me the ropes. I still call her today from time to time.” “It was my dream to own a children’s retail business,” shares Dina. “On March 1, 1996 Monkey Barrel opened, continued on next page.

spring in the step With spring in the air and warm weather here, March is the time to plan and execute your garden plans for the year, perhaps including new plants like Tractor Seat. BY BETTY MORRELL
I
smell spring in the air, and so, my friends, now is the time for some serious gardening. I am sure you have visited the local nurseries and were greeted by the colorful annuals and perennials that can be planted now. Be sure you have your beds planned before you do that. Transplanting can put your tender annuals and perennials in shock. An under-utilized plant previously known as Ligularia has a new name, Farfugium Japonicum, also known as the Tractor Seat plant. This evergreen clump-forming perennial is now being sought widely for use in landscapes and in containers. The Tractor Seat plant adds rich texture and deep glossy foliage to shady woodland gardens, boggy areas, sand banks, perennial borders, and container gardens. In small beds and containers, they make a great back to low border plants, and in large beds they can be massed as a ground cover in front of ornamental shrubs and under canopy trees. (This plant will spread to a handsome clump). A member of the sunflower family, an added attraction of this plant is the
TIP OF T HE M O N T H If you haven’t cleaned your beds of winter debris, do it before preparing your beds for planting. If the soil is tired, add some good garden soil and Milorganite, which won’t burn the roots. Check plants for winter damage using the nail test, and hopefully you’ll find green on the stems. Prune down to the green.
flower spike that rises up to 3 feet above the foliage with small, bright yellow daisylike flowers that bloom in fall and winter. The bees and butterflies love them. The Tractor Seat plant prefers moist, rich soil, but it’s not fussy about the PH. It grows best in shade with filtered sun, as too much sun can wilt and burn the leaves. Insect and disease problems are rare. I have admired this plant in person and was really taken back by its beauty. It is a plant any gardener would be happy to add to their landscape. A stunning new Shasta Daisy with long-lasting, large, bright sunshineyellow blooms is being introduced. It is a

Leucanthemum called “Real Goldcup,” an exclusive to the Southern Living and Sunset Plant Collections. This hardy PP plant is an excellent garden performer. With its sturdy stems, it is ideal for longlasting cut flowers. Real Goldcup has a tight clumping habit that grows 36 in. in height and 18 in. in width. Plant it in well-drained garden soil in full sun to part-shade. This improved, disease-resistant, easy care plant, when established, becomes drought-tolerant. This eye-popping plant is great in pots and containers, makes an awesome garden border or clumps withing the landscaping. I really love this plant and anxiously await its debut. It should be soon. And don’t forget that pots of colorful flowers or plants of textured foliage make great additions to your beds; they can be moved to any spot that you need color or visual beauty. obbi and Peter Newland first discovered Amelia Island while attending a private equity investor conference on the island. After many moves and homes around the country, including North Carolina, Massachusetts, Maryland, Texas, and Nebraska, they knew when they retired they wanted to be in a warm climate near the water. The couple enjoys scuba diving, and they have many treasures from their dives, so beach and water are very important to them. Amelia Island fit their criteria perfectly. They considered several different options for retirement, but when they discovered Amelia Park, they were confident it was the right choice. They purchased a lot and began to plan their new home. Amelia Park, a planned community, offered so much. Friendly porches front many of the homes, inviting

a sit-down and visit with friends. People walking their dogs stop and chat, others visit the friendly ducks on Amelia Park’s pond. Conveniently located near the island’s hospital and Fernandina Beach’s Historic District, it offers many positives. While conforming to the requirements of Amelia Park, the couple was able to design the perfect space to suit their lifestyle and house their treasured art and family antiques. They sketched out their ideas, then enlisted the help of their son, Scott, and daughter-in-law,

Like many people considering downsizing, the Newland’s knew they had to create a well-designed space for their needs. Once in the front door, you are drawn into a dramatic open living area with a soaring ceiling that is 18 feet high. The kitchen area flows into a cozy space with a stone fireplace that reaches to the ceiling. Around the corner, the backside of the fireplace features a smaller, more intimate area for conversation and relaxation. The house and its décor reflect the couple’s many interests. Each piece of art displayed throughout the home is special to the couple and has a story. Some of the artists represented include Bill and Kathleen Maurer, Tony Van Hasselt, Andy Evanston, David Nackashi, and

close friend Ruth Igoe. A large painting with warm marsh-like images hangs on the far wall in the dining room; it was purchased while the couple lived in Omaha. Much of the displayed art is by talented family members, including Peter, son Scott, and daughter-in-law Colleen. In addition to the artwork on the walls, the couple has a pottery collection with pieces by Trish Tipton (Slightly Off Center), Robert and Beverly Combs (Bright Sky Pottery), and Sandra Baker-Hinton. Bobbi shared that many of the decorative accessories in the house were found in shops on the island. She found many pieces at Eight Flags Antique Mall; it’s where the Newlands found the

two large sailboats that are above their kitchen cabinets. Bobbi shared that downsizing meant choosing what to keep and what to let go. Their antiques are family treasures with precious memories. Each has a special area. Peter has a small office space where he can indulge in his love of painting, and Bobbi has a little sittingand-reading area off the master bedroom that is made cozy by family photos and antiques. The Newlands love the convenient location of their home. They enjoy the intimacy of Amelia Park and their neighbors. Bobbi volunteered for the Amelia Island Museum of History’s Holiday Home Tour for seven years. The last three were spent as chair of the House Captains. They enjoy their rounds of golf and are active in the life of the First Presbyterian Church, Fernandina Beach. Their move to Amelia Island has been a good one for the Newlands. They have a lifestyle suited to their many interests and a home designed for memories yet to come.

P
eople come from all over the world to Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach looking for their little piece of heaven, but every day in paradise can’t be sunny and 80 degrees. On this particular Friday night, it was cold and rainy, but I was determined to scratch that tropical itch, so I made my way to Salt Life Food Shack at Main Beach for dinner with a very special friend.
Salt Life Food Shack in Fernandina Beach is the third location for the young ocean-themed chain, but this one belongs to us. Despite the wonky weather, the bar was hopping and the dining room was full. Apparently, I was not the only one pining for an island-style attitude adjustment. Salt Life boasts a youthful vibe, which is reflected in the staff, many of whom are current or former Culinary Arts students of mine at Fernandina Beach High School. It’s always a treat to bump into students working in the world, and tonight our hostess was one of my freshmen. On the way to our table, we passed the bar, wrapped in tiles of cool teal, sea 62 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
foam green, and ocean blue, looking out over what is typically a packed deck and bustling sidewalk scene, but tonight the fun outside was on hold. Inside, however, the surf videos and reggae rhythms were keeping everything irie. Once situated at our table, I ordered a Cosmico for myself and a featured Coconut Margarita for Jessica, my guest. The Cosmico is one of many stellar offerings from Mocama Beer Company, located here on Amelia Island. I also ordered my favorite thing on the menu at Salt Life: the Mexican Shrimp Roll. The Cosmico is crisp with citrus appeal, and it went wonderfully with the roll, which features tempura-battered shrimp and avocado wrapped in soy paper and topped with sliced ahi, fresh jalapeños, Sriracha, and tobiko. We ordered our entrees from the “Seasonal Specials” menu, where we found the Coconut Margarita. Featured currently is a dynamite Lobster with Johnny Cakes, a cross-climate mix of cold-water lobster and Caribbean comfort, reminding us that warmer weather is only a few weeks away. The lobster was buttery and delicious, and the Johnny cakes were studded with bell peppers and kernels of fresh corn, all of which was drizzled in a lime cream sauce spiked with coconut rum. In addition to the lobster, we found a Crab Baked Grouper that harkened back to my “good old days” at the Golden Grouper Café. Served with crispy and perfectly seasoned new potatoes and mixed veggies, the grouper was moist, flaky, and topped with a luscious spinach and crabmeat cream. We had a ball laughing and hanging out, and everyone around us seemed to be doing the same. The bar stayed full, and people were hanging out, making the most of the scene despite the weather. I cannot wait to come back again with family and friends, hopefully under a summer sunset looking over the Atlantic Ocean from upstairs. Salt Life should not be missed. I
t has been a frustrating 12-months for everyone in lockdown during the pandemic, but one thing Amelia Islanders have going for us is that we live on an island paradise! Our beaches and restaurants are open, and there are numerous safe outdoor activities we can take advantage of. Recently, my husband, Troy, and I took a weekend “staycation” at Fort Clinch State Park, a gem for nature lovers and history buffs. After a quick trip to the grocery store for food, ice, and charcoal, we headed down the canopied road to Fort Clinch’s Amelia River campground. Within minutes, we had set up our camp and were ready to explore. Fort Clinch has several miles of hiking trails, including the Willow Pond Trail, which snakes its way around Willow Pond, an otherworldly destination. Troy decided to hike that trail, while I took some beach time for myself. The park has several miles of beach for shelling, swimming, and fishing, and I brought my binoculars to check out the shore birds. Painted Buntings, Piping Plovers, Brown Pelicans, and Wood Storks all make Fort Clinch their home at some time during the year. After our walks, Troy and I met up to visit the fort itself, with its row of cannons staring across the St. Marys River into Georgia. Fort Clinch is one of the most well-preserved 19th-century forts in the country. Although no battles were fought here, it was garrisoned during both the Civil and Spanish-American wars. The fort is one in a series of masonry forts constructed between 1816 and 1867. The fort has limited activities since the pandemic, but it is open to explore and we were happy to meet up with our friend and Park Ranger, Frank Ofledt, who was riding horses with his assistant that day. a unique living history experience! A soldier is on duty every day of the year, including holidays. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions and interact with the soldier as he goes about his daily activities. After our visit to the fort, we went back to our campsite to get ready for dinner. Nothing beats food cooked over a campfire! Fort Clinch has two campgrounds, one on the Amelia River and the other on the beach. I love the river site because it offers shade, and we can access the hiking trails directly from our campsite without having to drive. Their facilities are clean and in top-notch condition, and there’s even a laundry area. In addition, Fort Clinch offers primitive and youth camping. Another thing we love about the park is its location. You can see the sunrise at the beach in the morning, and then watch it set on the river in the evening. On our second day, we got up early to see the sun rise, then hiked the main trail up to the entry gate, and back again, for a total of six miles. This trail is also open to mountain bikes, and on it you’ll discover tabby structures, ponds, and a view of the Amelia Lighthouse. The shoreline along St. Marys Inlet provides great opportunities for viewing dolphin and an occasional right whale. Deer often graze in the grasslands adjacent to the fort during early morning and late afternoon. Gopher tortoise gather on the dune ridges during warmer months. We love to hang out at the inlet in late afternoon, looking for wildlife with our binoculars and watching the boats go by. For more information on how to enjoy your own “staycation” at Ft.
