With decades of experience hosting automotive events and a mission to preserve car culture for future generations, Hagerty is excited to take over as host of this iconic event.

ISLANDER Philip Kelly Deana Basile Kelly Publishers and Editors Tom Barrett Art Director Mark O’Day Sales Manager

March is one of our favorite months on Amelia Island, with its longer days and change in the weather. The blooming azaleas are nature’s announcement that spring is in the air, and, here on Amelia Island, our second clue is that unmistakable harbinger of spring, the Concours d’Elegance, held each year at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island and The Golf Club of Amelia Island. This year’s Concours brings a little change with it, too. With decades of experience hosting automotive events and a mission to preserve car culture for future generations, Hagerty is excited to take over this year as host of this iconic event. With the Amelia Island Concours staff now on the Hagerty team, Amelia Island’s favorite weekend promises to deliver the same incomparable moments we have all come to expect over the last 26 years. Known affectionately around the world as “The Amelia,” this two-time winner of the Motoring Event of the Year at the prestigious International Historic Motoring Awards in London, is now officially known as The Amelia. Along with its new name, The Amelia Concours d’Elegance also has a striking new logo reflecting the event’s uniqueness. As always, since its genesis under Bill Warner, The Amelia will be a non-stop three-day extravaganza of all things automotive, with seminars, social events, road rallies, an automobile auction, the Porsche Driving Experience, as well as new events like Saturday’s Cars & Community and a first-ever Kids Zone. Of course, the event culminates on Sunday with a display of three hundred rare and restored automotive gems on the fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia Island. These beautifully restored classic cars represent almost every era of automobile production, from the earliest models produced to classic models from the 1950s and some of the best racing cars ever produced. The race cars and the stars of racing are what sets The Amelia apart, earning it the nickname “The Racer’s Concours.” This year’s honoree is racing legend Chip Ganassi, an accomplished driver and team owner. Our congratulations to Hagerty and their talented staff for presenting another spectacular weekend. Through the years, Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance has given over $4 million to charity, including Community Hospice & Palliative Care. That noble tradition continues, with a portion of The Amelia’s ticket sales supporting local and national charities. In addition this month, we learn about the new garden that Matt Klabacka has planted next to his restaurant, Townies Pizzeria; meet a group of local ROMEOs, who gather each week for coffee and conversation; learn about the beautiful blue birds that appear each spring in another “Eyes to the Skies” feature; enjoy a Museum of History walking tour; and much more. See you around the island!

A

rmed with decades of experience hosting car-centric events and a mission to preserve driving and car culture for future generations, Hagerty is very excited to take over as the host of “The Amelia.” In 2021, the Amelia Island Concours staff joined the Hagerty team and continue to provide their unmatched expertise and historic knowledge on how to run a successful, legendary automotive event. This year promises to deliver the same celebratory, iconic energy of the events from previous years, with even more opportunities to delight car lovers of all ages. The Amelia’s new logo design showcases the event’s framed initials and represents Hagerty’s goal to save driving and car

culture for future generations. “The Amelia is truly a motoring event like no other, and we wanted a logo that reflected its strength and uniqueness,” says Tarra Warnes, Hagerty’s Vice President of Creative Strategy. The Amelia is a multiple award-winning motoring event, held this year from March 3 to March 6 at The Golf Club of Amelia Island and The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. Luxury shopping, auctions, new vehicle reveals, experiential drives, exclusive gatherings, and entertaining seminars surround Saturday’s Cars & Community and Sunday’s Concours d’Elegance. Each year, The Amelia honors a racing legend and attracts celebrities from across the automotive landscape.

A Jacksonville native, Bill Warner had a long and successful career in the automotive industry before The Amelia even started. In 1996, after years of working as an automotive photographer, journalist, and driver, the public relations team from The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island reached out to Warner in hopes of finding a champion to build an automotive event on their grounds. Warner didn’t consider himself a “Concours guy,” but he agreed to help with the caveat that the show give back to the community. The inaugural event took place in April 1996. Warner used his connections in the automotive world to advertise, report on, and sponsor the event. The Amelia would attract personalities from across the automotive landscape, from legendary drivers who would serve as the event’s yearly honorees to automotive designers, television personalities, and industry executives. Without Warner, along with his small, dedicated staff and an incredible group of volunteers, The Amelia would never have been what it was then or what it has become today.

Warner and his team’s hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. The Amelia won the coveted “Motoring Event of the Year” distinction from the International Historic Motoring Awards in both 2013 and 2016. But The Amelia is not just about cars. Since it began, the team has donated over $4 million to Spina Bifida of Jacksonville, Community Hospice & Palliative Care, including the Jane and Bill Warner Center for Caring, located in Fernandina Beach, and other deserving charities from Florida’s First Coast.

RACING LEGEND CHIP GANASSI HONORED AT THE AMELIA IN 2022 Racing legend Chip Ganassi will serve as Honoree of The Amelia this year. Ganassi has touched every major form of North American motorsport, as well as the ultimate international road race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He has been a fixture in the auto racing industry for over 30 years, and in addition to being an accomplished driver, he is one of the most successful

In 2010, Chip Ganassi became the only team owner in history to win all three crown jewels of racing in a single season.

and innovative owners in the sport. The Chip Ganassi Racing stable currently includes eight highly successful teams: four in the NTT IndyCar Series, two in the NASCAR Cup Series, and one each in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and Extreme E. Overall, his teams have 20 championships and more than 225 victories, including four Indianapolis 500s, a Daytona 500, a Brickyard 400, eight Rolex 24 at Daytonas, the 12 Hours of Sebring, and 24 Hours of Le Mans. Ganassi boasts state-ofthe-art race shop facilities in Indianapolis and Concord, North Carolina, with a corporate office in Pittsburgh. “Honoring a hero from the racing community is an important component of The Amelia DNA,” says McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty. “From the inaugural Honoree, Sir Stirling Moss, to last year’s celebration of Lyn St. James, The Amelia has anchored the celebration of the automobile to the incredible people who have devoted their lives as ambassadors for driving.” Ganassi made his racing debut in the 1981 Robert Bosch Super Vee Championship. In 1982, after graduating with a

finance degree from Duquesne University, he started his first Indianapolis 500 in Mario Andretti’s year-old 1981 Wildcat/ Cosworth. Ganassi was the fastest in a star-studded rookie class, qualifying ahead of future Indy 500 winners Bobby Rahal and Danny Sullivan. A year later, he scored two podium finishes, placed ninth in the IndyCar Championship standings, and was voted Most Improved Driver. After a brutal high-speed accident at Michigan International Raceway in 1984, Ganassi retired as an Indy car driver. His final race in the cockpit was in the 1987 24 Hours of Le Mans. Three years later, Ganassi founded Chip Ganassi Racing, which became the only team to win the Daytona 500, Indianapolis 500, NASCAR’s Brickyard 400, and the 24 Hours of Daytona in a 12-month span. CGR’s success includes eight victories in the 24 Hours of Daytona, two streaks of four consecutive IndyCar Championships, four Indianapolis 500 victories, including a 1-2 finish in 2012. In Ganassi’s return to Le Mans in 2016, his team did not disappoint, scoring another historic Le Mans victory for Ford in the CGR’s first Le Mans attempt. The landmark victory

PORSCHE ALUMINUM RACE CARS AND 24 HOURS OF DAYTONA On Sunday, March 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., it’s what we’ve all been waiting for: The Amelia Concours d’Elegance, featuring over 225 rare vehicles from collections around the world, for a celebration of the automobile like no other! Held at The Golf Club of Amelia Island, attendees will be wowed by historic vehicles from private collections that celebrate Ferrari’s 75th Anniversary. In another division, attendees will enjoy a celebration of Waterhouse, the coachbuilder based in Webster, Massachusetts, that produced high-quality custom bodies for chassis supplied by the major automotive businesses.

Also featured is a dynamic collection of Porsche Aluminum Race Cars. Porsche AG’s first fully purpose-built racing car came in 1953 in the form of the 550 Spyder. The first major win for the 550 came at the 1956 Targa Florio, driven by Umberto Maglioli. The 550 was further developed into the 718 RSK, another successful winning racer. These wins by the light, small-displacement Porsche race cars against largedisplacement 12-cylinder racers, such as Ferrari, gave them the reputation of “Giant-killers.” Sunday’s Concours d’Elegance also celebrates the 60th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Daytona. Key moments in Daytona 24-Hour history come to life with cars that helped make that history possible. Along similar lines, The Amelia is also celebrating the 70th anniversary of the 12 Hours of Sebring, a race held annually at the Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida. Other than the 24 Hours of Daytona, the 12 Hours of Sebring is the biggest and most popular American endurance racing event.

BIDS FOR KIDS AUCTION FROM THE AMELIA ISLAND BOOK FESTIVAL KICKS OFF APRIL 1 For more than 20 years, the Amelia Island Book Festival (AIBF) has worked to improve literacy skills in children by donating books to the children of Nassau County. The AIBF donates 10,000 books annually to Nassau County schools, a feat that would be impossible without the funds raised from the AIBF Gala and auction. That’s why this year’s auction is the most important one yet. The AIBF Gala was canceled this year due to Covid, but the popular silent auction has been moved online. It will run from April 1 through April 22. This year, one of the featured auction items is the naming rights to a character in New York Times best-selling author David Baldacci’s next thriller. Baldacci is Honorary Chairperson of the festival and an AIBF fan favorite, with 44 published novels. Other auction items include a luxurious dream car experience, an aweinspiring painting from a local artist, a two-night extravaganza courtesy of The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, and so much more. The 2022 Silent Auction is going to be one for the books! Get in on the action and support a great cause along the way. Pre-registration begins March 1, with bidder check-in starting March 15. KATELYN’S RIDE FOR AUTISM RETURNS ON APRIL 2 Autism is a developmental disorder that presents itself in a range of severities characterized by difficulty with social interaction, communication, and restricted or repetitive behaviors. At just two years old, Katelyn Conner was diagnosed with autism. Her parents knew this journey would require lots of love, patience, and care, and they moved back home to Pirate’s Wood in Yulee to be near family. After moving, Katelyn was having a difficult time adjusting, and the only way to calm her was a golf cart ride. These rides reminded Katelyn’s mother, Mandy, about riding in the very first golf cart in Pirate’s Wood as a little girl and inspired her to start Katelyn’s Ride for Autism – a golf cart poker run to raise funds to meet the needs of families raising children with autism. Nine years strong, Katelyn’s Ride is scheduled for April 2 in Pirate’s Wood – just where it all started. This year’s event features family fun, live music, cash prizes, raffles, and food trucks! With a mission to create acceptance, awareness, safety, and support for special needs families in Northeast Florida, the proceeds help to fund safety decals for vehicles, weighted blankets (used for sensory integration), grants to families, and more! KEEP NASSAU BEAUTIFUL CELEBRATES 30 YEARS WITH INAUGURAL COMMUNITY AWARDS For the last 30 years, Keep Nassau Beautiful board members and volunteers have worked tirelessly to educate and engage Nassau County residents and businesses on protecting the environment and improving the appearance of our community. Their programs include cleaning shorelines and roadways, collecting and properly disposing of household hazardous waste, educational outreach, and sponsorship of free tree events. Keep Nassau Beautiful celebrated their anniversary recently, and the event included the announcement and recognition of the winners of the Keep Nassau Beautiful inaugural Community Awards. Mocama Beer Company was awarded the Beautification Award for the repurposing of a landmark Fernandina Beach building into a thriving business and its use of Florida-friendly landscaping, which adds interest and beauty to the 8th Street corridor. Rebecca Jordi, a former KNB board member and officer, received the Environmental Award for championing planting and beautification projects and education across the county. White Oak Conservation was awarded the Sustainability Award because it exemplifies the award’s criteria by saving endangered wildlife through sustainable breeding, education, and responsible land stewardship, while also partnering with KNB and St. Mary’s Riverkeeper and Adopt-A-Road for cleanup events. Congratulations to all!

ill Wilkinson is taking her business, JW Frame Gallery, to a whole new level this year! Based on over 20 years of knowledge and experience, she sets high standards for herself and her enterprise. Being a single mother and a good friend to many, Jill has gained respect as an artist, builder, designer, and businesswoman. Jill’s thriving business made her realize it was time to move from her rented space on South 14th Street to her very own, larger building at 917 South 8th Street, where she now has 1,800 square feet to work in. With over two decades of experience in the framing business, Jill brings her expertise and unique talents to her brand-new store, where she works with her colleague and friend, Donna Carine. “With our new location, Donna and I are able to be more productive, adding more worktables, and even adding a new framing line,” says Jill. “We have always provided creative and unique ways to frame any type of art. And this year has been a great time for us to reinvent the store, modernizing its look, and carrying more fine art than in our other store.”

Jill considers her signature shop different from traditional frame shops. “Besides our custom framing, I wanted to include local artists, featuring various types of art and mediums,” says Jill. “We’re always expanding, growing, and offering new services, as well as state-of-the-art museum-quality framing materials.” In addition, Jill is rebranding her logo and website. “Together, Donna and I frame just about anything you can imagine, or not imagine,” says Jill. “For us, it’s not all about just art or photography. We frame family heirlooms, textiles, custom mirrors, and everything in-between. And with extra space to feature new works by local artists, I feel this is going to be an exciting year for our business!” JW Frame Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (904) 3106610 or visit www.jwframegallery.com or their Facebook page. ictoria Sell, manager of Debonair, is originally from Chesapeake, Virginia, but she and her husband, Sam, decided to make Amelia Island their permanent home in 2008. In 2009, Victoria and her in-laws, Steve and Jerrie Sell, opened a small boutique store on Sadler Road, then in 2015, they moved to their current location on Centre Street in downtown Fernandina Beach. Debonair is a fun place that specializes in stylish women’s accessories, including jewelry, hair clips, handbags, scarves, and more. Customers say they have the best selection of designer handbags on Amelia Island. “I love how supportive the community is here and how they helped us grow,” says Victoria. “We have some fabulous employees – Dru and Noreen – who are so much fun to work with, and we love meeting new customers from all over the world. We also love catching up with our regular customers when they stop by to shop or say hello.” Then she laughs. “What’s most fun about being the manager of Debonair is buying new merchandise and getting to see the new trends coming for the next season! Who doesn’t love shopping?” When Victoria isn’t working, her favorite thing to do is hang out with her husband Sam and their two kids, Bella and John. They enjoy going to Universal Studios, to the beach, and to the pool. “Oh, and spoiling our two rescues, Luna and Cash.” To see what’s on sale, visit Debonair’s website at www. debonairofflorida.com, stop by the store at 114 Centre Street, or call (904) 261-6993.

ohn and Lori Lecker opened JJ COOPER in 2018, which exploded on the scene as the premier menswear store in the Fernandina Beach market. It’s the perfect addition to two other businesses the couple own: lori+lulu, which earned the tagline “Laid-back Luxury Lifestyle”, and Pearl, a premier luxury resort boutique. They also own ISOLA Home, which features furniture, art, tabletop decor, home decor, lighting, luxury linens, area rugs, chandeliers, and gifts. The hardworking couple used their creative vision to develop a brand strategy for JJ COOPER based on menswear stores in Americana markets like Austin, Atlanta, and Charleston. The store features exclusive distribution of the Peter Millar sportswear line and other highly coveted brands such as Bugatchi, Fish Hippie, Mavi denim, Maceoo, and more. “We’re in the process of expanding our shoe business based on the success of our Martin Dingman, T. B. Phelps, and Rez Ispa collections,” says Lori. “One of the most rewarding parts of owning a business is seeing your ideas become reality and achieving success with the support of the community.” “Owning a business requires a twenty-four-seven commitment that’s carried forth with passion and hard work,” says Lori. “Finding great people to represent your brand is the hardest thing. But store manager Susan Fishback has built a wonderful team.” Then she laughs, “Which enables John to do what he does best: buy amazing menswear!” JJ Cooper is located at 216 Centre Street. Using a plot of land he purchased next to his restaurant, Matt Klabacka of Townies Pizzeria wants to share the culture of planting and harvesting with the next generation. BY JULIE SIMMONS PHOTOS COURTESY OF TOWNIES PIZZERIA

R

aise your hand if you’ve driven by Townies Pizzeria on T.J. Courson Road and wondered what is going on with the land next door. If you guessed a garden, you guessed right, but the genesis of this patch of dirt isn’t what you might expect. Meet Matt Klabacka, who some of you know as the owner of Townies Pizzeria. What might be news is that he’s quickly building a local brand as Farmer Matt. “I grew up working on a farm in Wisconsin, and my mom always taught me that gardening is good for the soul.” Matt will be the first to tell you that these days he is ready to preach the same message to anyone who will listen. “The hours I spend in the garden are absolutely the most satisfying of the week,” he says. Matt and his wife, Angie, raised three boys, who are now all in their 30s. Matt has fond memories of teaching his sons to garden and he is proud that they are carrying on the tradition with their own families. When Matt acquired the plot of land next door to his restaurant, he knew this was a

unique opportunity to act on his passion of inspiring the next generation to take up gardening. “I am a farmer who just happens to know how to make pizza,” says Matt. “What I really want to do is share the gardening experience with the community; that is what our garden is all about. Sure, we will use some of the produce in our kitchen, but we are growing this garden teach and to give back.” Today, Farmer Matt is inspiring students from Fernandina Beach and sprouting future farmers with his new Plows, continued on the next page

Plants, and Pizza program. “There is nothing better than seeing a kid experience the soil and cultivate their own produce for the very first time,” says Matt. “We enable this by inviting groups of students to come and learn how soil, seeds, water, and sunshine work together. We give the kids a chance to learn how it all works, and then plant their very own seeds, which we give them to take home, tend, and then harvest their first fruits or veggies.” In addition to the hands-on gardening, participants get see a real-life plow in action, take a hayride, and of course, enjoy some pizza! So far, a few cohorts of homeschooling students have enjoyed this experience, and Matt would love to hear from any local educator who is interested in bringing your students to the garden. In addition to teaching the kids about seeds, Farmer Matt shares his commitment to conservation with the students, too. “One thing I love about this garden is that it’s a green space in the heart of our city,” he adds. Moreover, the garden is an occasion to empower the entire community to recycle. “Today, we have a compost pile that we teach the kids about, but we are also working to open it to the public so that they can recycle waste and then take soil.” So next time you drive by Townies and see Farmer Matt tilling his soil, roll down your window and wish him well, and if you get lucky, you can say hello to a group of future farmers, too! er ore art thou,

ROMEOs?

As light in yonder diner breaks, it’s another Friday morning meeting of the Amelia Island ROMEOs, group of friends who gather each week for fun and friendship. BY MANDY HAYNES • PHOTO BY SHERRY CARTER

o, a retired New York Times journalist, a civil engineer, and a minister walk into a diner. If this sounds like the set-up for a joke, it’s not; in fact, it’s serious business. Bob Weintraub, Bob Keane, and Harry Green get together with a dozen or so other ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out) once a week for coffee, breakfast, and conversation. Or as David Jonker put it, “We’re having coffee and telling lies.” So maybe it’s not too serious, but the Friday morning meetings for these guys are a long-standing tradition. Sam Lane, Steve Mobbs, Scott Kessler, Bob Keane, Robert Prager, and Michael Tanner are the original members, the “old timers” of the group, who started meeting five years ago. “Steve Mobbs got the idea for the name when he read a stranger’s obituary. It mentioned the guy’s friends—the Romeos—who met once a week at different restaurants. It fit our group, so it became the name we used. Little did we know that there are

ROMEOs all over the world! We’d been meeting for a couple of years when we found out,” laughs Steven Crounse. I did some research and found that Tom Brokow mentions ROMEO clubs in his book The Greatest Generation, which was published in 1998. Apparently, these groups have been around for decades, started by men in retirement who realized they missed the camaraderie they had with their coworkers. I learned about the Amelia Island ROMEOs three years ago when I met David Jonker. He’s a great storyteller, who knew I’d love meeting this diverse group of fellas as fodder for my own stories. In fact, his exact words were, “If you want to meet some characters, I know where to find them.” Back then I was working at Story and Song Bookstore, so my schedule kept me from going, and then Covid showed up and made getting together a lot more difficult. things are settling down, I contacted David to see if the invitation to meet the group was still open. When he said yes, I anxiously waited for Friday morning to come. Let me tell you, it was worth the wait. When I met with the ROMEOs, there were eleven of them seated outside at a table at the Beach Diner. Before I could ask if they went to different restaurants, Tiffany Hurley appeared to fill my coffee mug, a cobalt blue beauty with THE ROMEOS embossed on it. (It was a surprise gift from Crounse, the Big Kahuna himself.) Soon, my unasked question was answered. “We love her,” said one of the Romeos, “Tiffany was our favorite waitress at Doo Wop Diner, but she took a job here. We waited for about a month after she left before coming by to see her, and we haven’t left since.” “These guys are my comfort zone!” laughs Tiffany. “They are the best group of people you’d ever want to meet. So many stories!” She’s not exaggerating, either. When you add up the years of experience, the interesting backgrounds, and the wisdom of the group, they are a gold mine. You’d think that months of isolation would’ve put a damper on these guys, but that wasn’t the case. While they waited on vaccinations and boosters to become available, they found a way to stay connected and keep the conversations going. “Oh, we still met,” answered Ken Kneisel. “We Zoomed on Friday mornings and got Tiffany to join us.” Who are these ROMEOs? They are environmentalists, entrepreneurs, liberals, conservatives, storytellers, and friends. They are locals, full-time residents, and one “snow-bird.” But if you really want to know who they are, Tiffany says it best. “We set up a virtual tip jar during the shutdown, and they would ‘tip’ me at our Friday morning Zooms. After a couple of weeks, I told them I was fine and they didn’t have to keep tipping me, but they said if I didn’t need it, use it to help someone else.” That’s who the ROMEOs are. www.AmeliaIslander.com

backyard “blues” As spring begins to bloom on Amelia Island, don’t be surprised if you see some brilliant flashes of blue in your backyard, either from Eastern Bluebirds or Indigo Buntings. STORY AND PHOTOS BY GAIL E. PFOH

T

he backyards and byways of our beautiful barrier island are often home to the “blues.” Of course, we don’t mean the feelings of the blues. We mean the feathered, flashy, colorful “blues” which can sing and fly! Right now, anywhere you glance in your neighborhood’s blooming azaleas, or along Egan’s Creek Greenway, or even in the landscape of your favorite golf course, you may see birds that are vibrant blue in color. All birds are treasures, and these blue birds are like precious little sapphires, which dazzle our eyes. One of the most popular and widespread blue birds in our area is the Eastern Bluebird. They can be found here all year long. The males are a brilliant regal blue, red, and white. Females share these colors, but their colors are more subdued, and they are a grayish color from above. Watch for them as they go about their day eating primarily insects in summer (thank you!), then fruit and berries later in the year. Eastern Bluebirds are cavity nesters. At this time of year, they are scouting for nest locations and gathering nesting materials. Their courtship includes the male offering gifts of 53 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

food to his female. Besides nesting in natural tree cavities, they might make a nest in a hole previously used by a woodpecker family or use a nest box. A pair will lay between 2 and 7 eggs in one “clutch” (a group of eggs laid at a single time). They will usually raise three clutches in a season. The eggs will be incubated for approximately sixteen days before hatching. Remember, birds use nests to raise their young. They do not stay at the nest after their young have fledged for the season. It is not used like a bedroom, where they return to sleep at night. When the young fledge, some birds may not have all their feathers or be able to fly, but all fledged birds (even Bald Eagles) are adult size when they fledge. If you are lucky, adult Eastern Bluebirds may bring their youngsters to your feeders. A good way to attract them is to offer mealworms. Juveniles are not as blue as adults, and they have spots on their back and chest. Another beautiful species of bird that is blue is the Indigo Bunting, which is returning to our area now. the male looks like “a scrap of sky with wings,” and they are nicknamed “blue canaries.” The adult males are a brilliant bright blue, but the females are brownish in color and have a white throat. White millet may bring them to your feeders. White millet is also great for attracting Painted Buntings. Indigo Buntings like to eat berries and many insects (free pest control!), so mealworms are helpful for attracting these birds to your feeders, especially live mealworms. Planting strawberries, blackberries, and other berry plants may also draw them in to your yard. Indigo Buntings nest in shrubs or low-growing trees and will generally raise two clutches each summer. Each clutch will have 3 or 4 eggs to hatch. According to allaboutbirds.org, “Indigo Buntings migrate at night, using the stars for guidance. Researchers demonstrated this process in the late 1960s by studying captive Indigo Buntings in a planetarium and then under the natural night sky. The birds possess an internal clock that enables them to continually adjust their angle of orientation to a star; even as that star moves through the night sky.” If birds didn’t already impress you, I challenge you not to be impressed after you read that! www.AmeliaIslander.com

IN THE GARDEN Fragrant Rebloom

beautiful bloomers With spring finally here, you can add beautiful color to your landscape with a variety of colorful plants, like Daphne, Fragrant Rebloom, and Longwood Blue. BY BETTY MORRELL

M

arch has arrived, and now is the time to put all your “armchair gardening” ideas from the winter months into your garden, whether it is a new bed, replacing old plants, or just refreshing with something new. A beautiful backdrop for any garden is a flowering shrub, and the best way to add color is with annuals, perennials, and bulbs. Perennials are the backbone of most flower gardens because they come back each year. A very pretty and fragrant shrub that has clusters of white flowers is the Daphne (Aureomarginata alba). The most aromatic Daphne of all Daphnes has rosy-purple buds, which open to elegant, white-clustered flowers that bloom in early spring and perfumes the entire garden. This shrub remains attractive the entire year. This fast-growing evergreen with long and slender dark green variegated foliage, outlined in bright gold, grows in part shade. Its height and width run from 4 to 5 feet. Use in beds, borders, mass plantings, or as a specimen. It’s a beauty!

TIP O OF F T HE M O N T H Now is the time for new garden soil and fertilizer. When checking plants for winter freeze damage, use your thumb nail to see what part of the plant survived. Don’t be too hasty to yank them out!

How about Fragrant Rebloom (Hemerocallis rebloomer), a lovely mini-daylily that blooms non-stop from mid-summer through fall. Ideal for the perennial garden or containers, its yellow blooms are fragrant and self-cleaning, so the plants is always neat. They are heatand drought-tolerant, 18 inches high, and they love the sun. Plant them one inch deep. These plants add color when others are tired of the heat. A beautiful plant with a hard-tofind rich shade of blue is Longwood Blue (Caryopteris). It is in the displays at Longwood Gardens. This stand-out plant has an upright growth and is a longtime heavy bloomer with silvery foliage. It needs little attention. Longwood Blue blooms most

heavily from mid- summer into fall. Butterflies won’t be able to resist these mouth-watering blooms and hummingbirds will be right behind them. This upright plant grows 2 to 4 feet in height and width, blooms the first year, and is a fast grower. This very fragrant repeat bloomer can be planted in full sun to part-shade. It is heat- and deer-resistant. Use it as a border, accent, cut flower, ornamental, or for fall foliage. It won’t disappoint! A new series of Azaleas that bloom heavily in spring and fall has arrived. This Azalea is called Perfecto Mundo, a plant that sets large clusters of orange-tored flowers for months. Perfecto blooms on the old wood in spring and after a short rest, it blooms on the new wood until the autumn frost. Perfecto Mundo grows 2 to 4 feet in height and width. Use it for borders, edgings, landscape, in containers, or as a specimen. Pruning after the spring bloom will encourage new blooms. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell33@gmail.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

rew and Donna Nixon, originally from New England, have enjoyed a variety of homes around the world. Their travels offered the family amazing cultural experiences, with stops in California, China, and most recently, Zurich, Switzerland. When it came time to establish a home base, Florida was a perfect fit, and Amelia Island even more so. Most family and friends live on the East Coast and could visit easily. The challenge was building a house while they were still living abroad. Once they decided on the Amelia Island area, they found a perfect marsh-side lot just off the island in Brady Point Preserve. The 53-acre gated community with its forested lots and marsh views was just what they were looking for. Knowing it was going to be a long-distance project, they needed to find a builder who could effectively and efficiently carry out the building of their home. They found a perfect match: Arthur Rutenberg Homes and the father-son combination of 59 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Vic and son Victor Buscaino. They found that the quality of construction in a Rutenberg home was a perfect match to their wish list. Donna recalls with a smile the three-day visit when the couple made all the major house decisions. Looking back, Donna is amazed at all that was happening in their lives while the house was being built. She lost her mother, planned a destination wedding, a bridal weekend, and moved her youngest daughter to Paris to go to school. The Buscainos give great credit to their clients on how organized they were about the project. The design team, headed by Victor Buscaino, and the construction team, headed by Jason Chabot, communicated long-distance with the Nixons through Facetime, computer communication, and telephone. EATING SCENE

First Love Brewing With a reputation for creative beverages and handcrafted food, First Love Brewing is building a community around its passion for excellent craft beer and artisan pizza. BY LOIS CHAPPELL WINKLER • PHOTO BY LILLY SCHEETZ

T

he night of February’s full moon was the perfect night to enjoy First Love Brewing. My friend, Ashley Sparkman, and I could feel the passion that Jessie and Kevin bring to their work each day. High school sweethearts, they struck out on adult life together, first attending college, then mastering their crafts, and finally opening the doors here in June 2020. On a cool evening, we grabbed a table outside under the giant oak we’d both known all our lives. As we waited in line to

order, we perused the list of beers written in chalk on the wall, with name, style, ABV, International Bitterness Units (IBUs), and price. We’d arrived early on Wednesday because Kevin had said this would be a slower time, but it was already busy, with the bar already filled with patrons. The dining area inside is not fancy. Tables, chairs, walls, and floors are clean and simple. A couple of televisions are on the wall, but the sound was off; connection and community are the design concepts these young people have planned. Flights were how we would sample as much of their beer offerings as possible. Like a flight of stairs, a flight of beer is an array of small tastes, arranged lightest to least light. 66 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

In craft brew world, brewpubs score big points for creativity of their brew paddle. Many points for First Love, for their brew paddle is Amelia Island-shaped! Four selections of beers are poured into five-ounce glasses arranged north to south. On the reverse side of a coaster are names of what we’d ordered so we could keep track of our favorites. Our choices were: Lily Belgian Tripel, light and citrusy; Daisy Honey Blond, faintly malty; Sing Softly Berliner Weisse, sour (my favorite); Fly Through the Night Dunkelweizen, wheaty; Cardinal Truth West Coast IPA, grassy; Happy Pale Ale, classic; Burst Into Bloom Belgian Table Beer with Raspberry, slightly sweet; and A Beacon of Light Milk Stout, richly chocolatey. Lily was Ashley’s favorite, but the milk stout we agreed would be a perfect after-dinner quaff. A certified Master Brewer, Jessie keeps the beer flowing and rotating. She has five core beers and rotates others every few weeks. This alone is reason to stop in to see what’s brewing with Jessie! Foods to accompany these beers include fries, wings, pizzas, salad, and a couple of sandwiches. Double-Fried Truffle Fries were as crispy as any fries we’ve ever had and stayed that way as we sampled our beers. The light, spicy Gochujang Wings are Korean-style, whereas the sweet, robust Huli Huli are Hawaiian. The Momma Marie pizza is a grandmother legacy with meatball and ricotta flavors; the artichoke stands out in the Garden Party Pizza. Kevin teaches classes on pizza-making, and they are so indemand that they have waiting lists. Two young people picked Amelia Island to fulfill their dream, planned carefully, and have steadily built the tap room’s reputation, and a community around it, making it a popular place for regulars and visitors to the island. Through the evening, we’d see a toddler playing under a table, a dog sitting on the porch with its people, and adults aged 21 to 91 streaming in for refreshment. First Love Brewing is located at 22 South 8th Street in downtown Fernandina Beach. MARCH 2022

BACKYARD ADVENTURE Chadwick House

walking through

history BY JULIE SIMMONS PHOTO BY JAN JOHANNES

A

melia Island is renowned for so many things, from its cobblestone streets and historic homes to its blue skies, sunshine, and cool breezes, and all of these come together when you enjoy an Amelia Island Museum of History walking tour. In case you didn’t know, the museum offers four unique docent-led foot tours around downtown Fernandina Beach, a brilliant way to learn more about the 52-block area on the National Register of Historic Places that just happens to sit in our own backyard. If you’re interested in the downtown proper, the Centre Street Tour tells the stories of the families, businesses, and marine industries that shaped our town over the past 175 years. The Murder, Mystery & Mayhem tour is for the brave ones who want to hear stories of death, chaos, and mystery across two centuries. The Architecture Tour explores the history of the streets south of Centre, including 7th Street, which was coined “7th Heaven,” because living here in the late 1800s was like living in heaven. And last but not least is The Gilded Age Tour, which shares the stories of the Historic District’s most beautiful homes, and I can tell you firsthand this is a tour not to miss. Learning about the museum’s offerings is easy with a visit to ameliamuseum.org. When I read the description of the Gilded Age Tour, I was captured by the words, “Silk Stocking District.” I sent a quick email to the museum team, and my one-hour tour covering eight blocks was arranged. To start the tour, I met Docent Susan Bowen in front of First Presbyterian Church. Right away I had to ask her about those panty hose; she laughed and shared that in the late 1800’s, 80 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

if you could afford to live north of Centre Street, you could afford to wear silk stockings! Susan went on to describe how our town shifted from Old Town to Centre Street and a little bit about David Yulee’s role. An interesting fact is that Yulee, who was of Jewish heritage, was committed to creating a community of churches in Fernandina Beach, and that he did with St. Peter Episcopal, Memorial Methodist, First Presbyterian, and St. Michael Catholic Church all within a stone’s throw of each other. From there we walked north, where Susan shared many architectural details of the homes and interesting stories of how they have passed through the generations, with many still in the same family. She told many fantastic tales from the museum’s archives on Fernandina’s history, and she noted that many details have been added as more extensive online databases have become available. Susan and a team of four or five other volunteer docents joined the museum six years ago, studied Fernandina’s fascinating history, and today enjoy offering tours to visitors and locals alike. There are so many tidbits that I am dying to share, like what they found under the Chadwick House during a renovation, which two houses have the exact same floor plan—and then some—and the tale of a crooked house, but Susan made me promise to save something for your tour! I loved every second of mine, and I was reminded once again that our history isn’t just for tourists. With the beautiful spring weather here, now is the perfect time to get your family out for your own walking tour. Visit ameliamuseum.org to learn more! MARCH 2022
