entire community.
One of the largest events in the entire Southeast, the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival returns to Amelia Island once again this spring, as always on the first weekend of May. With crowds each year estimated at upwards of 100,000, the Shrimp Festival is a high point on the Amelia Island calendar and a great event for the entire community. Most of us can repeat with pride that Fernandina Beach is the birthplace of the modern shrimp industry, and, although the shrimp boat fleet is smaller these days, the pink crustacean remains a true local favorite. Always a fun-filled weekend for the whole family, the festival kicks off with the Pirate Parade on Thursday evening, continues with Friday’s Downtown Merchants’ Sidewalk Sale, and rolls that evening into live entertainment and delicious food—including a variety of shrimp dishes—the annual Pirate Invasion, and a fireworks display over the harbor. Saturday kicks off with the Shrimp Festival Run, and Saturday and Sunday bring the festival’s highly-regarded fine arts and crafts show, more delicious food, the Kids’ Zone, and lots of fun contests. It’s also great to know that much of the food you enjoy at the festival is sold by local churches and service organizations, which use the food booths each year to raise much-needed funds to support their efforts. Sunday brings the Shrimp Boat Parade and the traditional blessing of the fleet, which is how the festival began over 50 years ago. To all the volunteers who make the Shrimp Festival so much fun each year, we extend our heartfelt gratitude. We at the Islander celebrate shrimp and the Shrimp Festival each year with our Shrimp Festival Recipe Issue, in which we share delectable shrimp recipes from our favorite local restaurants. We are always amazed at the genuine creative genius that inspires the talented local chefs who contribute recipes each year to our annual shrimp extravaganza. We, and our readers, are grateful for their generosity and for the chance to share these terrific recipes with family and friends. Of course, if you’re not in the mood to cook, you’ll find these and many other fabulous dishes at our outstanding Amelia Island restaurants. Also this month, we are happy to feature the Shrimp Festival 5K Run/Walk, which is celebrating its twentieth year. The Shrimp Festival Run brings families and friends out to run and cheer, and it raises money for the McArthur Family YMCA and the Katie Caples Foundation. In addition, we have an article on the volunteers who patrol the beach during sea turtle nesting season, which begins May 1, another one of the “Great Homes of Fernandina” with Dickie Anderson, a “Backyard Adventure” to serene and historic American Beach, and much more. See you around the island!

1/2 oz. parmesan cheese, shredded 1/2 oz. fontina cheese, shredded 1 cup spinach, chopped 1 tsp. butter salt
In a medium heated sauté pan, drizzle 4 drops of olive oil and butter. Add shrimp and a dash of salt. Toss shrimp, and add pinch of garlic and chopped shallot. Add spinach. Cook until garlic begins to brown. Add white wine to deglaze. Add heavy cream and fettucini. Add shredded cheeses. Serve garnished with chopped parsley.
España CAMARÁO SANTANA 10 large local shrimp 2 bacon strips, chopped 3 medium mushrooms, sliced 1/4 cup sherry 1/4 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup chicken stock 1 tsp. minced garlic
2 tbsp. onions, chopped 1 tsp. piquillo peppers, diced 2 tbsp. English peas Olive oil, as needed 1 tbsp. Manchego cheese, shredded

When garlic is slightly browned and onions are translucent, deglaze pan with sherry. Sauté 2 minutes, then add chicken stock and heavy cream. Let sit on low heat. Meanwhile in a bowl, dredge shrimp with your favorite dried herbs and sauté shrimp in a separate sauté pan until shrimp are almost cooked through. Cover and set aside. Back to the sauce: add English peas, Manchego cheese, and salt to taste. Pour sauce over pasta, grits, polenta, or a giant crostini (Roberto’s preference!) and top with sautéed shrimp. Garnish with the piquillo peppers.

shrimp tip: The key to good shrimp is to cook it quickly. Unlike meat, shrimp does not need to be tenderized by cooking. In fact, the longer you cook it, the tougher it gets. That's why it is best to begin cooking shrimp in a pre-heated pan.

10TH ANNUAL KATIE RIDE FOR LIFE SET FOR APRIL 12
AMELIA ISLAND JAZZ FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2014 HEADLINERS Jazz trumpeter and composer Randy Brecker, a multiple Grammy Award-winner, and monster jazz organ player Tony Monaco are set to headline the 2014 Amelia Island Jazz Festival in October this year. A hugely successful performer who has sold over a halfmillion albums as a solo artist, Brecker will be performing on Saturday, October 18 at the Omni Resort at Amelia Island Plantation with the Brecker Brothers Tribute Band, a project dedicated to his late brother, Michael. Tony Monaco, who will appear on Friday, October 17 at the Omni Resort, is a leader in the revival of the Hammond B3 organ in jazz. As he has been with so many fledgling jazz organists, Jimmy Smith played a significant role in attracting Monaco to jazz and retaining his interest in the music. “We are very excited to have Randy, a long-time friend, and Tony this year. Both are world-class artists and highly respected musicians,” says Les DeMerle, AIJF’s Artistic Director. The Festival, which runs from October 16 to 19, kicks off with its annual pre-Festival free concert in Amelia Park on Sunday, October 12. For more information, you can call (904) 504-4772 or visit the website at www.ameliaislandjazzfestival.com.
On Saturday, April 12, the Katie Caples Foundation will host the 10th annual Katie Ride for Life, a premier cycling event that raises money for organ donor education. The Katie Ride is a premier bicycle touring event catering to cyclists of all abilities. The annual fundraiser is held on Amelia Island and features routes of 100 miles, 62 miles, 36 miles, 18 miles, a fun ride, and an off-road ride. All events begin and end at the Atlantic Recreation Center. The event was created in 2005 to raise awareness for organ donation and support the Katie Caples Foundation’s nationally recognized organ donor education program. The 18-, 36-, 62-, and 100-mile rides begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Atlantic Recreation Center on Atlantic Avenue, continuing through some of northeast Florida’s most beautiful terrain. The Family Fun Ride begins at 8:15 a.m., the Off-Road Ride at 8:30 a.m., and the Katie Fun Run & Walk at 8:45 a.m. A post-ride celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. features live entertainment, giveaways, food, massages, and more. The Katie Ride provides an opportunity to create media attention and communicate the impact Katie Caples had as an organ donor. For more information, visit www.katierideforlife.com or call (904) 491-0811.

And shoppers will be able to find the perfect gardening tools, including pruners, loppers, hand tools, rakes, gloves, and more.” A featured attraction is The Raptor Experience, an up-close encounter with live raptors. he Island Art Association is owned and operated by almost two hundred artists. Their Featured Artist of the Month is yet another avenue for the members to show and sell their work. Each month, an artist is selected to exhibit their work for the entire month, with their opening reception coinciding with the Second Saturday Artrageous Artwalk. This month’s featured artist is Rosemary Skidmore, a retired Navy Nurse who settled on Amelia Island in 2011 with her husband, George. Skidmore never took any specialized art classes except in high school, but a three-hour Paper Mache class at the Island Art Association with Anne Howden in 2012 inspired her to create 3D sculpture using the simplest of articles, such as newspaper, found items, driftwood, shells, and paint. “I like to work and create something with my hands,” says Skidmore. “Maybe that’s the nurse in me. My art is a bit strange, sometimes unusual. Maybe now that I am retired from the military and there are no more rules and regulations, there is a freedom for me in whatever is created. Anything
goes! What gives me the greatest pleasure is to see people smile when they look at my pieces; that works for me. My materials are usually from the beach. Broken shells, driftwood, sand, claws, you name it, and lots of used newspaper. I truly enjoy what I create in my garage, while listening to the waves crashing across the street. Life couldn’t be any better!” The Island Art Association is located at 18 North 2nd Street in the Historic District of Fernandina Beach. IAA members renovated an old restaurant and converted it into an artist-owned and -operated art gallery and meeting place. They also have four satellite gallery locations, including Baptist Medical Center Nassau, the Amelia Island-Fernandina Beach-Yulee Chamber of Commerce, the Council on Aging, and Seaside Amelia Inn. Join IAA and featured artist Rosemary Skidmore during Second Saturday Artrageous Artwalk on April 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. to enjoy great art, conversation, light appetizers, wine, and soda. For more information about the gallery, call (904) 261-7020 or visit www.islandart.org.

r. Hal London was an Air Force doctor from the Northeast, who came to Amelia Island on vacation and fell in love with the area. Since 1988, Dr. London’s primary position has been Medical Director of several Emergency Departments in Florida and Georgia. Although Dr. London has been practicing emergency medicine for over twenty-four years, he has shifted his focus to his true passion, Aesthetic Medicine. An artist and musician, Dr. London decided to mingle his love for medicine and the arts when he opened London Medical Spa in 2012. Dr. London specializes in the latest anti-aging and beautifying technology, specializing in Botox, wrinkle and line fillers, chemical peels, and leg vein treatment. His office is presently located at 229 South 8th Street, but he recently purchased The Lohman House on Sixth Street in the Historic District, which he intends to use as his residence and office. “I’m in the process of restoring the house to its original splendor,” says London. “Amelia Island is my home, and I love living where I work.” Dr. London opened his own medical spa with the goal of providing physician-only cosmetic medical treatments for the residents of Amelia Island and surrounding areas at affordable prices. He has been known locally as the “Roc Doc,” the energetic drummer who has performed for years at local venues on Amelia Island, including at O’Kane’s with Davis and Pam Turner. For more information about Dr. London’s procedures or to make an appointment for a consultation, call (904) 310-9380 or visit www.londonmedicalspa.com.

bringing the
community together Now celebrating its twentieth year, the Shrimp Festival Run and the McArthur Family YMCA bring the community together to show off its “Can Do!” spirit. BY JULIE SIMMONS

Michael Biagini and his daughter, Mary Frances, are a prime example. In 2009, the pair ran together, which was a huge memory-maker for Biagini, an avid runner, to finish his little girl’s first run holding her hand. However, he is quick to say that this event is about more than just the run. “Running with your kids brings together a family within a family,” he explains. “My children learn that we support and encourage each other.” That’s part of the Shrimp Festival Run’s two-fold mission. “The running influences the community to live healthier lifestyles, and the race also has a unique purpose—to make a difference in the community,” confirms Grego. The difference
happens when the Annual Y Campaign raises funds through the race that are used to provide before- and after-school childcare, swimming lessons, sports programs, teen activities, and a variety of other programs for children and families who could not otherwise afford them. The capstone of the event is the one-mile Katie Caples Memorial Youth Run, which honors event creator David Caples’ daughter, Katie, who was killed at age 17 in an automobile accident. “I get a smile on my face every year when the children of our community participate in the ‘Katie Kids Run,’” explains Caples. “This event reminds us that every 15 minutes someone in our country is added to the waiting list for an organ donation. We can make a difference by signing up to be an organ donor when we apply for or renew our driver’s licenses.” Caples is committed to raising awareness of organ donation in honor of Katie, who was an organ donor herself. My family loves the Shrimp Festival Run because there’s something for all of us—a 5k race for me, a one-miler for my kindergartener, and the half-mile Popcorn Run is perfect for my toddler, while Daddy cheers us on! “You don’t have to be an athlete to participate in this event,” says Biagini. “Just come and have fun! It’s great to see so many friends each year at the run.” “The YMCA is a great example of an organization that creates a spirit of ‘Can do!’, and then passes the spirit on,” summarizes Caples. For more information on the 20th anniversary year of this wonderful community event, stop by the McArthur Family YMCA or visit www.firstcoastymca. org/branch/mcarthur. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, contact Karina Grego at kgrego@firstcoastymca.org or (904) 261-1080.

or many Amelia Island runners, the first Saturday in May is a standing 8 a.m. Main Beach date for the annual Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival run. Since 1994—count ‘em, 20 years!—runners of every level have hit the North Fletcher pavement as part of their Shrimp Festival celebration and to assist the McArthur Family YMCA’s fundraising efforts, through which they help those in need in Nassau County. This year’s race kicks off May 3 at 8 a.m., and YMCA Member Experience Director Karina Grego can’t wait. “Each year I enjoy seeing the faces of the kids and participants at the finish line as they rejoice in accomplishing their goals,” she smiles. “This event is so special in the way it unites families and creates a wonderful tradition through the years.”

PROTECTING SEA TURTLES Carrying on a long Amelia Island tradition, dedicated local volunteers will soon provide sea turtle hatchlings with safe passage to the ocean. STORY AND PHOTO BY SANDRA BAKER-HINTON
A
s sea turtle nesting season draws near, it’s easy to forget that sea turtle conservation on Amelia Island has not always been as wellorganized as it is today. Conservation work began here in 1985 through the efforts of Greenpeace, which had approached the Florida Department of Natural Resources and offered to train local groups on how to collect data on sea turtle nesting in North Florida. A note was posted at the Atlantic Recreation Center announcing a meeting, and Mary Duffy and eight others showed up for the meeting and volunteered. Today, hundreds volunteer on the island each
year to ensure that sea turtles hatchlings born here make it safely out to sea. The only training in those days for volunteers was at Melbourne Beach, the largest nesting beach for sea turtles in Florida. It was hands-on, in-the-

field training, observing first-hand the sea turtles laying eggs and identifying species by their tracks. The early data collected by this small band of volunteers was instrumental in getting the Turtle Excluder Device regulations in place and placing the devices on shrimp boats. In those early days, when you could drive Amelia Island’s beaches from endto-end, only twenty nests were identified on the whole island, compared to the 150 to 200 nests found today. At that time, all nests were relocated to Little Talbot Island State Park, but soon it proved much more convenient to create an continued on page 69.

t is hard not to notice four houses, often referred to as “The Sisters,” with their classic detailing, all lined up in a neat row on South Seventh Street. They were built from salvage left from the Golden Age’s elegant Egmont Hotel. The classic Victorian detailed doors, windows, and double galleried porches give a hint of the wonderful grand old hotel, which once occupied the entire block where the houses now stand side by side. Described as two-story frame vernacular, they are representative of Greek Revival design. The claw foot tubs original to the hotel remain in some of the homes. The saddest of the four houses was sided with asbestos at one time and cannot be restored. The silhouette remains, but the poor house has been nicknamed the “Ugly Step-Sister.” Built in 1878, the Egmont Hotel was as elegant as any in her day, with beautiful gardens across the street. The fourstory hotel stretched 134 feet along Seventh Street and 128 feet along Beech Street. The hotel advertised rooms with fireplaces, hot and cold water, and telephone and telegraph connections on each floor. During the season of 1880, the
Egmont served one thousand guests. The Egmont was one of many hotels that served the tourists arriving from the north when Amelia Island was called the “Newport of the South.” Those visiting would enjoy the carriage rides on the beautiful beach and the warm ocean breezes. The gentleman would hunt or play billiards at the hotel. The most famous guest of all may have been General Ulysses S. Grant, who visited his friend David Yulee and enjoyed a hero’s welcome. As tourism moved south, the hotel became less popular, and all attempts to find a use for the building failed. Samuel Swann, a prominent real estate entrepreneur, tried to sell the land and salvage from the elegant hotel and, in the end, he bought both the land and salvage himself. The hotel was originally built for $150,000, and Swann purchased four large lots and the salvage for $2,100. It was torn down in 1901, and, in 1905, local entrepreneur Louis Hirth bought the deteriorating hotel and built four identical houses on South Seventh Street and three cottages on South Sixth Street. Many houses and properties in the Historic District have bits and pieces of the elegant hotel.

inter is finally over, and it certainly was unpredictable this year! I hope most of your tropical plants were covered and survived the freezing cold. If you have doubts about a particular plant, don’t forget to do the thumbnail test on the stalk: when you see the green, the plant is alive, and you cut it at that point. I want to share with you a few more new plants for your garden. I hope I have room for some of them, but they can also be planted in containers. I really like the “BloomStruck,” a new Endless Summer hydrangea. It’s a real showstopper. When the mopheads explode in color, they cover the rounded compact plant. The blooms mature to rosy red and display into the fall, followed by rich, burgundyred foliage. Flowering occurs on both old wood and new growth, assuring flowers even after a severe winter. This hardy deciduous plant grows 2 to 4 feet tall. It can handle full sun to partial shade, and it blooms from June to September with luscious 3 to 5 inch blossoms. BloomStruck also has beautiful red-purple stems and dark green leaves with red petioles and veins, which provide

great contrast to your garden landscape. Because of its extremely strong stem, above-average heat tolerance and great disease resistance—especially to powdery mildew—it is a perfect combination of beauty and hardiness. I don’t know about you, but I love berries, any kind will do. Here is one I am going to put in a pot. BrazelBerries “Raspberry Shortcake” is a new dwarf raspberry variety with full-size berries. These plants thrive in either containers or your garden and they do not require staking. The carefree, compact shape doesn’t require a big garden space. You’ll love harvesting delicious sweet berries right from your patio, and they have no thorns. This dwarf red raspberry sends out new canes each spring that produce more mid-season fruit each year.
47 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • APRIL 2014
“Raspberry Shortcake” grows to a height of 3 feet, making it perfect for compact spaces and container gardening. The plants are also self-pollinating. Plant Raspberry Shortcake in a 12 to 16 inch container using quality potting soil. Place the container outdoors in full sun for the growing season. As the plant matures, you will likely need to transfer it to a 20 to 24 inch container. Your plant will produce more fruit in the second year. Fertilize in early spring and again midsummer with a balanced, watersoluble fertilizer (such as 18-18-18). Let your plant go dormant in the winter. In early spring next year, you should see new sprouts coming from both the soil and some of the old canes. The sprouts from the ground will become canes that will fruit the following year. Old canes with the new growth should fruit the same year. Leave all the new shoots from the ground and old canes that have green leaves, cutting the rest to the ground. This plant is hardy for our zone, but move it inside or cover it in a hard freeze. As always, please e-mail me at bamorrell@aol.com with any questions. And Happy Gardening!

ackie and Peter Martin lived in Coral Gables for 30 years, until a trip to Myrtle Beach brought them to Amelia Island, a stop along their way. Walking on the beach, the couple spied a home that intrigued them, with Jackie noting what a unique property it was. It didn’t take them long to decide they were meant to live in that house. They bought the villa in 2003, and, just two years ago, they did a total renovation, rebuilding the house to their liking using the home’s original footprint. Jackie loves the ocean and the inspiration she derives from the scene she wakes up to every day. A house on the beach is like no other, offering a landscape that changes from day to day and season to season. She had no need to hire a decorator, as she

and Peter have a great sense of style. Their collection of furniture and antiques has charm and history. “We have collected a lot of things over the years. When we moved here, we had to get rid of a lot,” says Jackie. “We kept the things we loved and cherished, and decorated the home around those items.” Because the house has been rebuilt, it felt brand new. But the couple wanted to bring a sense of “oldness” to the home as well, and it was Jackie’s idea to use reclaimed materials. “That was one of the reasons we used the reclaimed wood to create a bar around the counter in the kitchen,” said Jackie. “When I stand at the window looking at the view, I feel as if I’m on a ship!” Reclaimed wood from the Jim Beam distillery was used for all the floors, and the dining room table was made with wood that came from an old grain elevator, handcrafted by artisan Kevin Byrnes of Jacksonville.

Details are all about what makes the Martin’s home special. The couple tries to purchase as many things as they can from local shops. “We have some small pieces and lamps that we bought at the Plantation Shop,” says Peter. “Other furniture has come from Lott’s and Roxy’s, and Rowland’s Upholstery recovered some things for us. Our blinds and shutters are from Bill Scheff of Great Windows, and much of the art on our walls is by local artists.” The Martin home is three stories tall. The bottom floor contains two bedrooms, one for their girls and one for their son, who visit their parents frequently. The winding staircase opens to a great room, the heart of their home, featuring the dining, living, and kitchen areas, boasting beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean. Another story up you’ll find a den and master bedroom. Two patios, a ground floor sitting area, and an outdoor shower allow the couple to spend a lot of time outdoors. “We love to walk on the beach and ride bikes,” says Peter. “This neighborhood is ideal for that.” In addition, Peter and Jackie belong to a book club and enjoy golfing together. Jackie and Peter are retired now. Jackie was an elementary school teacher, and Peter, a professional director in the utilities industry. When they moved to the island full-time, they were eager to get involved in the community. Peter was invited to join the board of the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival, and, as a lifetime motorsport enthusiast, he loves the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. Jackie is involved with Friends of the Fernandina Beach Library. As much as they love being involved in the community, they also enjoy just relaxing with close friends and family, finding inspiration in the heart of their home overlooking the magnificent, everchanging beach. www.AmeliaIslander.com

Amelia City Sushi With a handcrafted wood interior, a comfortable ambience, and fresh and delicious offerings, Amelia City Sushi is a welcome addition. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
A
melia City Sushi is a special place. Located in the Harris Teeter Shopping Center, the restaurant’s interior was seven months in the making, and it shows. The walls and ceilings are maple and mahogany, handcrafted by a master woodworker from Connecticut, and the design boasts a 20-seat dining bar of curly maple. Impressionist paintings were commissioned to accompany the wood interior and feature our island’s coastal marshes. The music of Sinatra and Buble creates a comfortable atmosphere, where Amelia City’s beautiful and delicious sushi offerings are created. I recently visited Amelia City Sushi for lunch with my friend, Jane. We began our meal with homemade Shrimp Bisque, savory and piquant, topped with a spice-coasted shrimp. We also sampled their Seaweed Salad, served with a
refreshing dressing, a great dish for the truly health conscious. Jane and I were eager to try Sashimi Omakase, which is the Chef’s Choice dish. Our plate consisted of delicate salmon, red-eye tuna, yellow tail, and Alaskan king crab. The fish was all extremely fresh and the flavors clean. The restaurant offers gluten-free or white soy sauce, a plus these days.
The next sampling was the Amelia City Signature Roll, which included Alaskan king crab, raw tuna, avocado, and cucumber. What a lovely combination! Our chef also prepared a roll wrapped with soy paper, instead of the traditional nori, or seaweed, wrapper. It had a delicate flavor, and the tuna was very light and fresh. The tuna salad is a true house favorite, made of chopped red-eye tuna, mango, avocado, and a refreshing dressing. This is an extremely healthy and delicious choice. We also sampled a wonderful smoked eel, which was placed on top of rice and nori. What a unique and a nice change on the palate compared to the other sushi and sashimi we tasted! Our chef was full of surprises, and, just when we thought we had our fill, he presented us with Chilean Sea bass and romanesco. The sea bass was pan sautéed. It was simple, and perfect, the way I believe fish should be cooked. With its delicate flavor, a little butter goes a long way. Romanesco is a hybrid of cauliflower and broccoli, and it has a unique flavor. It was served lightly steamed. We were surprised with a glass of Chateau Miraval. I am not familiar with rose wine, and this one was delightful, dry, and smooth, with a mouthwatering finish. This rose is produced by the Perrin Family in France. The 2012 vintage was rated in the top 100 by Wine Spectator, and the vineyards are owned by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. We also tried a chilled sake, served in a beautiful iced sake carafe. It was a sparkling Hana Awaka, with a hint of raspberries and a clean finish. Amelia City Sushi is a great restaurant for a date night because of the leisurely way that sushi should be eaten—slowly, and with thoughtful regard for the truly freshest fish. Their fish arrives daily, the highest grade available. The restaurant’s dishes are beautifully garnished, with special tidbits like mountain burdock and enoki mushrooms. The ambience is that of the pub culture of a Japanese tavern, and it is a welcome addition to our island restaurant scene. Amelia City Sushi is open Monday through Friday from noon to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m. For more information, call (904) 432-8681 or visit their web site at www.ameliacityfoods.com.

Sea turtles from page 39. enclosed nesting nursery at Fort Clinch State Park for all the island’s nests. After two years doing that, everyone realized that relocating nests was not the answer. When the first restrictions on beach driving were passed, it became apparent that the nests could—and should—be left as the mother had laid them, as it is done today. The initial small group of volunteers on Amelia Island has grown to hundreds, and last year’s state wide group of volunteers numbered almost 3,000 people. Training is now done by the state, through the Florida Marine Turtle Permit Holders Meeting, along with an alphabet soup of organizations —FWC, STC, NFWF, etc.—which meet with over 450 leaders of various sea turtle groups to provide their permit training. Training is also done in individual groups, and at a Florida Wildlife Commission training meeting held each year at Marineland. In addition to conservation, the work of sea turtle volunteers on Amelia Island has a vital teaching component today. Volunteers share information with people unfamiliar with sea turtle nesting, with children, and with visitors to the island as they patrol the beaches early each morning during sea turtle season from May 1 to October 31. The most exciting way for new volunteers to learn and become involved in sea turtle conservation is to attend a nest excavation, which is done three days after a nest has hatched. Often, real live sea turtle hatchlings, which may have become trapped in the nest, are discovered. Volunteers then release the hatchlings, as onlookers cheer and root the turtles on while they scamper across the beach. Buying a State of Florida turtle license plate is also a great way to help, as all proceeds from the sale support sea turtle conservation. Exploring
American Beach Rich in history and natural beauty, including “NaNa,” the tallest dune in Florida, American Beach is a real treasure.
A
merican Beach was founded in 1935 by Florida’s first black millionaire, Abraham Lincoln Lewis, and his Afro-American Life Insurance Company. The plan was for his employees to have a place to vacation and own homes for their families by the shore. Throughout the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, summers at American Beach were busy with families, churches, and children. It was a place where African Americans could enjoy “Recreation and Relaxation without Humiliation.” The beach included hotels, restaurants, bathhouses, and nightclubs, as well as homes and other businesses. Today, American Beach is a sleepy and serene part of the southern end of Amelia Island, rich in history and beauty. On a recent afternoon, I decided to take a drive down to American Beach to explore and learn more about the legacy of this special place. Back in 2002, I was lucky enough to meet MaVynee Betsch, A. L. Lewis’s great granddaughter, an environmentalist and activist who spent the better part of her adult life educating the public on the history and environmental importance of American Beach. We drank tea in her little home on the beach, and MaVynee delighted me with her stories and her revelations on life. The most unique feature of American Beach is NaNa, the tallest dune in Florida, a protected landmark due largely to the efforts of Betsch. Known as the “Beach Lady,” Betsch, who once performed opera in London, Paris, and Germany, returned to American Beach in 1975 as a full-time resident. Here, she used her resources and talents for the preservation of nature, the environment, and the African-American community of American Beach. For this 60-foot dune system
that she dubbed “NaNa,” and the adjoining property to the shoreline, her efforts resulted in setting aside nearly ten acres as a national park, now located in the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve. I enjoy walking or biking the streets of American Beach, and that’s definitely the best way to explore this fascinating locale. Cozy and eclectic cottages dot the scenery, including a tiny church on Lewis Street called “Chapel of the Sacred Heart,” whose signs welcome all to come visit, say a prayer, and light a candle. A community center on Julia Street built in 2010 was decades in the making, originally a vision of past American Beach property owner association presidents in the 1980s and 1990s. Evan’s Rendezvous, a nightclub on the beach, played host to numerous celebrities during its golden years, including folklorist Zora Neale Hurston, singer Billie Daniels, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, Billy Eckstein, Hank Aaron, Joe Louis, actor Ossie Davis, and Sherman Hemsley. Burney Park offers restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic tables, and lifeguard towers, and beautiful stretches of sand and surf. In 1964, American Beach was hit hard by Hurricane Dora, and many homes and buildings were destroyed. The passage of the Civil Rights Act that same year desegregated the beaches of Florida, and American Beach became a less and less popular vacation destination as more African-American Jacksonville residents returned to beaches nearer to their homes. What a lovely way to spend an afternoon! American Beach is a treasured and precious part of Amelia Island, and if you haven’t taken a stroll or a bike ride that way lately, I suggest you make it your next backyard adventure!
