those changes.
In April each year, the Amelia Islander Magazine publishes our “Home & Design” special issue. Since the month of April delivers spring in full blossom, it’s fitting to think about fresh starts in our lives and in our homes. Spring is the traditional time for new beginnings, some good old out-with-the-old spring cleaning, and needed changes to the sleepy routine of our daily lives. One of the most satisfying ways we can shake things up is to make a few changes to our home. Of course, we can move into an entirely new home, but that’s not always a practical option. Instead, we might flip through some home design magazines, or more likely these days, check out some new ideas on Pinterest or other online resources. As we’ve noted before, making changes in our home is like creating a work of art, and the process of getting to the finished product is often a rewarding adventure in itself. Turning a house into a home is no small achievement. A home is a labor of love, and creating it proceeds on its own timetable as we work to build a peaceful place to raise a family or enjoy retirement. At its best, our home is a reflection of our needs and desires, and as we change over the course of our lives, we adapt our home to those changes. In this issue, we are always happy to share the stories of two Amelia Island couples and their beautiful homes. In the first feature, Steve and Lisa were working near Atlanta, and when the kids went off to college, they began thinking about retirement. Friends mentioned Fernandina Beach, they visited, and after working with a realtor, they found the perfect lot on which to begin the next chapter of their lives. In the second, Mary Ann and Carl were living on a lake in North Carolina when they bought a home on Amelia Island, as an investment, they told themselves. Soon they were splitting time between here and North Carolina, and before they knew it, Mary Ann was looking for a house on the beach. After a refresh of its 1970s design, their oceanfront home is a peaceful retreat as the couple embraces the joy of island life. Also this month, we look at ways to update your home with recommendations from some of our favorite local home experts; we learn about the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival’s educational efforts through its Summer Institute; we turn our Eyes to the Skies to discover the magnificent Red-tailed Hawk, we enjoy a great day on the water with Amelia Adventures; and much more.

hen Steve and Lisa Wooten were working as air traffic controllers outside of Atlanta, they talked about their retirement plans. Both knew they wanted to live near the beach, but—incredibly—neither had ever heard of Amelia Island or Fernandina Beach. When their daughters reached college age, the two began thinking more seriously about their retirement home. “Friends told us about Fernandina Beach,” says Lisa. “We came down, and a realtor showed us this lot, which we really fell in love with.” The couple chose Plantation Housing Corp., an independently owned and operated franchise of Arthur Rutenberg Homes, to design and build their home. It was easy to pick out everything, from the floor plan to tile, paint colors, and design. APRIL 2019

Above left: The Wootens matched the brick behind the bar in their den to brick in their previous home in Peachtree City, Georgia. Above right: A spacious kitchen with a room quartz-topped island makes entertaining a breeze.
“Julie and Benjie of Julia Hall Interiors helped us so much with colors,” shares Lisa. “We had an idea, but Plantation Housing Corp. had plans which fit our needs. We knew we wanted a onestory home.” Their three-bedroom, four-bath home has an open floor plan with twelve-foot ceilings. The living room and dining room have sliding glass doors, which open to a beautifully designed enclosed pool area. The doors

completely disappear into the walls, so that in the right weather, the home is fully opened to the tropical pool area. “We really have two living rooms,” says Lisa, “one indoor, one out.” Both have fireplaces, and the mantle on each is reclaimed wood from G & H Reclaims in Callahan. A comfortable sofa and four occasional chairs surround a gas fireplace in the living room; an outdoor sofa and matching chairs face the outside fireplace.

Below: The serene master bedroom features a king-sized bed with head and foot boards made from Abaca, a fiber native to the Philippines. Bottom: The spa-like master bath features a threshold-free accessible shower and a soaking tub.
A full slab of quartz—ten-and-a-half feet by five feet—tops the island between the living room and kitchen. The island, which has a farmhouse sink and full cabinets underneath, sports a wine cooler on one end. Comfortable, low bar stools create an ideal spot for a quick bite, or for guests to enjoy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. A spacious pantry tucked behind the refrigerator runs the full breadth of the kitchen. The living room and kitchen serve as the central axis of the home. Although neither is at home full-time now, each of Steve and Lisa’s daughters has a room with an ensuite bath on the west side of the house. The expansive master suite is on the east side of the house. “Both our girls are tall,” laughs Lisa. “We had the bath counters and shower fixtures designed especially for them.” 16 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

A mud room separates the west wing bedrooms from the garage; a custombuilt wall of cabinets and benches is in the “stop and drop” space. Steve and Lisa put in an outdoor shower, which opens onto the mud room, while a spacious laundry room is off the hallway leading to the garage. A bar/TV room on the back corner of the house was made into a den. “We repeated the brick wall from our Peachtree City house,” notes Steve.

The mantel (as well as the one inside in the living room) is from G & H Reclaims in Callahan. The custom-designed pool features a shallow-end “shelf” for relaxing in beach chairs. Bottom: The covered outdoor dining area is a favorite spot for the couple’s Golden Retriever, Copper.
The master bath features a soaking tub and a roll-in shower with a pebbled floor. His-and-her closets (Lisa’s features a chandelier) line the hallway to the bedroom. A king-sized bed with headboard and footboard made from abaca—a hemplike Filipino fiber—is the centerpiece of the master bedroom. Comfortable chairs and a small table create a cozy sitting area under the window, while a door opens onto the pool area. Steve, who lived in Hawaii for four years as a child, says he hopes to get back into surfing now that he doesn’t have to maintain an acre-and-a-half property. “We went from that level of maintenance to a five-minute mowing job!” he laughs. The United States Constitution Scholarship Foundation (USCSF), in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Fernandina Beach, are co-sponsoring the inaugural Constitution Bowl Challenge on April 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Yulee High School auditorium. The goal of the event is to challenge the four Nassau County high schools— along with homeschooled students— to learn more about our country, the Founders, Federalist Papers, the United States Constitution, and important Supreme Court decisions. Each school formed one team that is working with a coach prepare for the rivalry which awards a plaque and scholarship of $1,000 for each member of the winning team and $250 for second place. Along with the monetary awards, the winning school will receive a trophy—and of course bragging rights! There will be two rounds of the competition—the first is 30 minutes and will eliminate two teams, and the second round is 20-minutes. If there’s a tie after round two, the teams will brace for a sudden death round. The public is invited to this free event, and refreshments purchased benefit the Yulee Booster Club. For more information regarding the USCSF and the Rotary Club of Fernandina Beach please visit their websites at www.uscsf.net and www.fernandinabeachrotaryclub.org.

THE 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE KATIE RIDE The Katie Ride is back on Amelia Island, Florida to celebrate its 15th year on Saturday, April 13, 2019. Cyclists, runners, walkers and swimmers get ready because there is an event for everyone! The 18 to 63-mile cycle tours of Amelia Island traverse majestic state parks, ecological preserves and 40 miles of stunning coastal views. New this year is The Katie Fun Tri – a “fun” triathlon presenting a 300-yard swim in the Atlantic Recreation Center pool, an 18-mile road ride, and 5k on foot through Egan’s Creek Greenway (please note this is not chipped or timed event). The Katie Walk & Fun Run share the Egan’s Creek course. Funds raised support the Katie Caples Foundation and its mission to increase the number of registered organ donors. There are nearly 120,000 people in the U.S. currently waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, and on average, 22 people will die each day due to a lack of available organs for transplant. Amelia Island’s own Katie Caples experienced a fatal car accident in 1998, and her parents, David and Susan, founded the Katie Caples Foundation to raise awareness about the importance of organ and tissue donations. For more information and to register, visit http://katiecaples.org/.
SWINGIN’ WITH JAZZ GOLF TOURNAMENT Get out to the driving range and practice that putt in time for the Swingin’ with Jazz Golf Tournament on Saturday, April 27, 2019. The event is in its second year to support the future of jazz on Amelia Island. The goal of the Jazz Festival Board is to preserve the all-American art form by helping young, talented artists who are pursuing their dream of becoming jazz musicians. This event funds two of these endeavors – Jazz in Schools and a college scholarship. The purpose of Jazz in the Schools is to expose young people to the art while motivating more students to pursue jazz as a musical endeavor. Each year, the Festival’s educational programs culminate in the Amelia Island Jazz Scholarship. This financial award goes to deserving high school musicians who demonstrate strong potential to perform jazz at the collegiate level. Fernandina Beach Golf Club is proud to host the event. Registration includes 18-holes for a 4-person scramble, golf card, prizes, and following the game an awards lunch with Live Jazz from Amelia Island Jazz Festival All Stars plus special guests and a jam session where the students make music the pros! For more information or to register visit www.ameliaislandjazzfestival.com/events/golf-tournament.

n the south end of the island, tucked under a canopy of huge live oak trees, lies one of the cultural treasures of Amelia Island: the Plantation Artists’ Guild and Gallery. This year, the gallery is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Four times a year, the Plantation Artists’ Guild and Gallery presents a new art show and reception of traditional and contemporary art works in a variety of media. Guests view the artwork, meet the artists, and share wonderful food and wine provided by Osprey Village and Chef Ryan Robertson. The Gallery invites a chosen artist to display their work at each new opening, and a selected charity is sponsored. The Gallery features works in watercolor, acrylic, oil, pastel, mixed media, sculpture, and photography. From its beginning, the PAGG, a not-for-profit artist cooperative, was formed to promote art enrichment in the community, artists in the community, activities of the Guild, and to enrich its membership, which is presently 35 talented artists. When there are openings for exhibiting members other than residents of Amelia Island Plantation, a
public “call to artists” is made to Nassau County residents. There are now two categories of membership available at PAGG: the first is their present “Exhibiting Membership” for members who exhibit their art and meet specific qualifications. They also staff the gallery and hold an office or serve on a committee. The second membership is the “Art Lovers Membership,” which is for those who do not wish to exhibit but want to support the Gallery and Guild by participating in events, presentations, lessons, workshops, and classes, or by assisting with various gallery working needs. The gallery now has 18 active Art Lovers. Other venues on Amelia Island also display PAGG’s artwork: the Isle of Amelia Executive Suites, beginning in May, and presently at Osprey Village and Amelia Island Plantation Real Estate. The Plantation Artists’ Guild and Gallery is located at 94 Amelia Village Circle at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort Spa & Shops. ynda Dahl never had any formal business training when she opened Imetry, the premier paver and stone design company, in 2003. “I was a single mom with two kids,” she laughs. “But I did have was a real estate license.” An Amelia Island resident for 27 years, Lynda would monitor new construction for new out-of-state homeowners at Amelia Park and learned about the beauty of brick pavers and hardscape designs. Entering the construction field wasn’t a typical path for a woman, but Lynda, a Marine Corps veteran, believed in herself and her ability to provide for her family. Lynda attended the Interlocking Concrete Paving Institute to learn proper installation techniques, and she continues to attend classes on new materials. She has designed and installed stunning projects from St. Augustine to St. Simon’s Island. She credits her success to the hardworking people who surround her and help her offer customers a rewarding experience. Imetry creates hardscape areas using products with concrete brick pavers, natural stone, and travertine. They have installed numerous driveways, patios, pool decks, fire pits, and retaining walls for commercial and residential clients. Lynda’s mother, Maryphyllis, and daughter, Aubrey, greet every customer with a smile, and they will help you select from the many styles and colors of materials on display for your hardscape transformation. Located at 1627 South 8th Street (across from First Baptist Church), call Imetry at (904) 4911234 or visit www.imetryinc.com.

Revelation Design
ernandina Beach’s much-loved Artistic Florist is now Revelation Design. Owner Brooke Raulerson has spent the last year rebranding Artistic Florist into a full-service event planning, design, and production services company. “Our new name,” says Brooke, “is meant to encompass all of the work we do, from planning a wedding or special occasion to delivering a botanical collection. We want to be the curator of events which create lifetime memories.” Revelation Design offers retail floral with bespoke botanicals and timeless silk arrangements, and serves corporate clients as well. Using custom-built props, plants, furniture, and their talented designers, they also specialize in creating the perfect environment for weddings, serving Amelia Island brides and brides across the country. Brooke’s husband Dale never dreamed that he and Brooke would own their own floral and event design studio, but he works closely with Brooke to create beautiful environments for their customers. Dale’s creative vision enhances homes and gardens with wooden planters, arbors, and structural plant décor that he assembles. “We do so much more than just fresh cut flowers,” says Brooke. “Revelation does all of the hospital plants and other corporate installations here on the island.” Brooke and Dale teach classes such as floral design and gardening at their 6,000 square foot facility at 2383 Jamestown Road. “Our design center,” says Brooke, “offers space for clients to sit down with us while we draw up plans to meet their needs.” Revelation Design can be reached at (904) 261-5546 or www.revelation.design.

here are few places as charming as Centre Street in historic Fernandina Beach, and Mary Ann and Carl Palmer certainly agree. “We were looking for a home on the coast and we hadn’t discovered the perfect place yet,” Mary Ann shares. That evening, they stumbled upon downtown Fernandina Beach, and the couple quickly realized they had found their beach town. Their next stop was a realtor’s office, where they were introduced to the Amelia Park community. Soon they began

sharing their time between their North Carolina lake retreat and their home here. “Carl told me not to fall in love, as this home was an investment,” Mary Ann laughs, but it’s no real surprise that Mary Ann fell in love with Amelia Island and realized she was having more fun here than in North Carolina. “I took up running and wondered what it would be like to live on the beach as I passed the homes on South Fletcher.” The Palmers casually looked at oceanfront homes for four years, and when this gem hit the market, it took all of about 90 seconds to know she’d found the home she’d been waiting for “I walked in and said, ‘this is it,’ to my realtor, John Holbrook.” Mary Ann and Carl then walked onto the beach and looked back at the house, and Carl experienced the allure that she felt. All that was left was to give their new home a little TLC and refresh its 1970s design. The couple teamed with John Dodd for the architectural work, but in the middle of the project, a funny thing named Hurricane Matthew happened. APRIL 2019

“We were out of town, and I made a call to my handyman to ask him to batten down the hatches. Turns out, he positioned a patio bar cart perpendicular to the edge of the house. When we came home and saw the cart, I had an idea: what if we extend the back wall of the family room and add a bar!” John Dodd joined the conversation and confirmed that not only could Carl have a bar, but that as a bonus the back wall could be glass sliders to let in the natural light and sea breezes in. Donna Lynne Custom Homes, along with Robyn Branch Design, joined the team to make the vision a reality. The trio made a few strategic changes to the home’s design, like removing walls to extend the kitchen 15 inches, which made a significant difference in the home’s layout. One new addition is a full bathroom downstairs, as well as a sitting area, which could be could be turned into a bedroom someday if the stairs become a challenge. Next to this space, Carl can enjoy the Atlantic Ocean and its dunes from his office. A neat detail is that Carl designed the home’s stairway and hand polished the steel himself with his son. 38 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

“Modern with a side of cottage,” says Robyn when describing the finished product. “A perfect blend of an efficient and beautiful sanctuary that speaks to Carl’s practical brain and Mary Ann’s effervescent magnetism. The home feels good immediately, spa-like and calming.” If you think the lower level of the home is stunning, hold your breath as you climb those stairs. The cozy space on the second level is Mary Ann’s favorite, with its shiplap walls, fireplace, and balcony seating to enjoy the stunning sand dunes making way to the ocean. Equally charming is the adjoining master suite, with a mini-kitchen complete with a coffee maker and wine chiller, which allows the couple full enjoyment of their mornings and evenings in this special hideaway. Adjusting to island life has been easy. Carl learned to sail, and today he’s regularly on the seas both here and beyond racing boats around the globe. If you’re looking for Mary Ann, you’ll likely find her entertaining friends or in her sanctuary doing yoga and enjoying life as she always imagined it on the beach. 40 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

timeless design Smart technology can bring our homes into the future, but many of this year’s home trends are returning to more traditional looks, such as wallpaper and custom furniture. BY JULIE SIMMONS
ave you noticed lately how fast things are moving? Take a peek at your mobile device—how many of those have you had in the last 10 years? Many believe that the speed at which we are changing today is the slowest it will ever be! The same goes for trends in home design. Colors, textures, and yes, technology are constantly evolving, and designers here on Amelia Island are ready to share their 2019 favorites with you. “Design changes every seven years, at least,” says Robyn Branch of Robyn Branch Design. “I see many folks repeating what they see on television shows, and by the time they see it, it’s about three years old in the design world.” No trend is emerging more quickly than technology in the home. “Smart technology is now in your plumbing, lighting, sound, window treatments, as well as your temperature controls. Voice command is available in every aspect of the home—entertainment, security, and more. Staying ahead of the curve is a full-time job!” notes Robyn. While many trends are brand new, others are rewinding and coming back in a fresh way, like wallpaper. “Wallpaper is making a comeback in a big way. Think bold and beautiful, a ‘statement piece,’” suggests Cathie Clark of Room with a View Interiors. Taking a backseat in 2019 is minimalism, with traditional design returning to the forefront. “I’ve known this day was coming, but now it shows up in all the design markets with more color, more texture, more pattern—just more—taking its place.” Tiffany Hinton, co-owner of Cape House and designer and founder of Lola Interiors, echoes the departure from continued on pg 49.

minimalism. “In many cases, we are going back to traditional design, with warmer, more colorful spaces. We are excited about this transition and are intentionally layering pattern, color, and natural elements that automatically create a cozy, inviting space. When you have a combination of patterns and textures, it feels personal and collected.” Furniture is also coming home to its traditional roots. “I am seeing a return to curves as a reaction to years of sleeker, streamlined styles,” shares Cathie. Similarly, Tiffany said clients are skipping cookie-cutter furniture and opting to invest in custom pieces that fit form and function. Julie Hall Johnson of Julia Hall Interiors says that she is encouraging her clients to create interest by mixing and matching finishes. “Think about polished nickel and black iron as an example.” In the kitchen, same goes. “All white or off-white kitchens never seem to go out of style, but again, we like to mix and match. Think about adding a contrast color on your island or consider leveraging the richness of wood; this is a classic and timeless look. And countertops are the essential element to give your kitchen a fresh, new look with value for beauty and functionality. The fastest-growing choice is a quartz product—a man-made surface that is antimicrobial.” As we chase the change curve, the Amelia Island designers say, “Design for the future!” Cathie suggests you explore how to integrate the technology options throughout your home. Robyn encourages her clients to think about openness and accessibility for later years of life. Julie loves the emerging trends, but also advocates choices that are like “little black dresses,” ones that create timelessness in your design. And Tiffany is committed to custom, thoughtful selections that make your house a home, a space with livable luxury. As you go forward this year, one trend is for sure—you can break all the rules and recreate something better! Have fun innovating and transforming your home into a place you love this year, and for many years to come.

When the concert season ends, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival continues to provide music education for students, aspiring musicians, and the community. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE AMELIA ISLAND CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL
T
he Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival celebrates its season finale on April 26 with Anne Akiko Meyers, violin, and Jason Vieaux, guitarist, at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. But, despite the end of the concert season, the party’s never over at the offices of the AICMF. “Music education for concert audiences, students, and aspiring young musicians has been a core mission of the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival since our founding in 2001,” says Executive Director Dr. Joseph Marasco. “Our new Spring Institute and ongoing Strings Education Program take the festival back to its roots, as a means to educate and to bring chamber music into the mainstream.” Working closely with Artistic Director Christopher Rex, board members, musicians, and the community, AICMF has received a $10,000 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant for the 2019 year to support a Strings Education Program through the Boys and Girls Clubs of Nassau County. A generous donor couple has provided a $10,000 match. Currently, three 51 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
violin students and two piano students are enrolled in the program and they receive a 30-minute lesson and four 30-minute practice sessions each week. In addition to providing the instruments, the AICMF recruits and pays for the teachers in the program. AICMF’s Beth Newdome Fellowship Artists are selected every year from the nation’s leading conservatories. These promising young artists are mentored by the professional musicians on the festival’s schedule, culminating in regular performances before festival audiences. The 2019 Beth Newdome Fellowship Artists program will be held this year at the festival’s new Spring Institute during the last week in May. “The Beth Newdome Fellowship Artists will be members of the Balourdet Quartet and the Evermore Quartet,” says Rex. “They will be mentored by the members of the Dover Quartet —artists Joel Link, Bryan Lee, Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, and Camden Shaw—and myself. With the exception of one ticketed concert, attendance at all performances and rehearsals continued on next page. APRIL 2019

A generous donor has committed an annual gift of $10,000 for at least three years or for her lifetime to support the program.” The Balourdet Quartet from Rice University features Justin DeFilippus, violin; Angela Jiye Bae, violin; Benjamin Zannoni, viola; and Russell Houston, cello. Members of the Evermore Quartet from Northwestern University include Owen Ruff, violin; Hanna Bingham, violin; Caleb Paxton, viola; and Henry Chen, cello. The Spring Institute begins on May 28 with mentoring day with the Dover Quartet and Rex. The fellowship artists will then perform four concerts in three days: two at downtown Pocket Park, one at The Lakeside at Amelia Island, and one at Savannah Grand. On Saturday, June 1 at noon, the Hotlanta Dixieland Jazz Quartet will perform a “second line” New Orleans-style funeral procession from the Pocket Park to Parking Lot A at the foot of Centre Street, and the following day the fellowship artists will perform a ticketed concert at the Historic Nassau County Courthouse at 5 p.m. “The purpose of the Institute is to provide a new concentrated format for the education of the Beth Newdome Fellowship Artists and also to have the festival return to its more intimate roots in downtown Fernandina Beach, where it was focused in its early days,” says Marasco.” We believe that this will provide the best of both worlds with our spectacular regular season from January through April, and the new Spring Institute in May and early June.” The Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival was founded in 2001 by Rex, a part-time resident of Amelia Island and principal cellist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, along with a group of Fernandina Beach women who loved chamber music. Now in its 18th season, the festival has developed into one of the most prestigious events of its kind in the nation. Year-round residents of Amelia Island, Redtailed Hawks are powerful raptors of great beauty, tremendous flying skills, a screeching cry, and a signature red tail.
STORY AND PHOTOS BY GAIL PFOH
T
he skies of Amelia Island are home to many beautiful species of birds. From the Ruby-throated Hummingbird (our smallest species) to the American White Pelican (our largest), birds add beauty and joy to the area. One of the largest, most beautiful, and powerful birds in the region is a raptor. It is the Red-tailed Hawk. Raptors are among the largest birds in our ecosystem. HawkWatch International defines raptors as birds which “comprise a specialized group of birds that hunt live prey in order to survive. They possess acute eyesight for spotting prey, ssharp talons (claws) for seizing prey, and a sharp, hooked bill. R Raptors are exciting to watch, as their power and beauty is p perhaps only eclipsed by their tremendous flying abilities.” The Red-tailed Hawk is one of a number of raptors found h here. One of the easiest ways to identify this hawk is by the ssignature red tail seen on an adult or by their trademark harsh sscreeching cry often heard in the movies (even when they are sshowing us a Bald Eagle instead of a Red-tailed Hawk). You m may have seen these impressive raptors perched upon the llarge flag pole at the Nassau County School Board building, oor perhaps at the soccer fields near the Fernandina Beach M Municipal Airport where they actively hunt prey. All birds, including hawks, use their nests only during bbreeding season. Adult Red-taileds are actively nesting in our aarea now. A pair of Red-tailed Hawks will build a nest together, continued on next page.

then incubate their eggs for about 30 days. Most of these hawks nest in the tops of tall trees, but as the Cornell Lab of Ornithology tells us, they may also nest on manmade structures. Red-tailed Hawks even set up housekeeping in the urban landscape of New York City, on balconies or air conditioning units! On Amelia Island for several years now, a pair has nested on a cell phone tower near American Beach. However, a pair of Osprey recently have challenged the hawks for use of the cell phone tower. Stay tuned! When they hatch, these hawks are helpless. They are unable to regulate their own body temperature or raise their head. Although they weigh only about two ounces at birth, when they take their first flight to leave the nest, they are as large as their parents, with a wingspan of approximately 45” to 53”. In comparison, the local Osprey has, according to The Crossley ID Guide to Raptors, a wingspan of 59” to 67”. The first year of life is difficult for Red-tailed Hawks. Learning to fly and hunt on their own is not easy. Only 50% will survive their first year. Unlike many other bird species, these hawks will nest and fledge young just once a year. In most cases, they fledge two offspring per season. Mated Red-tailed Hawks will stay with the same mate until one of them dies, either naturally or in a battle for territory. In the Amelia Island ecosystem, Red-taileds are year-round residents. In the spring and fall, however, you may see Red-tailed Hawks from the northernmost parts of North America, including the boreal forest (nicknamed the snow forest). They pause here to rest and eat as they migrate through our area. For the most part, they look like our local hawks, but in some cases they are a deeper, chocolatey brown. These hawks may be 1,000 or more miles from home. They will rid our area of many rodents and snakes before they fly on. Keep your eyes to the skies to catch sight of these beautiful hawks, as they thrill us with their beauty and flying prowess. www.AmeliaIslander.com

uilt in the final year of the Civil War, the charming little cottage is a frame vernacular with a transom over the door and chamfered posts with jig-saw cut brackets. It is a one and half-story house best described as Folk Victorian. It is most noted for being the home of the Sister’s of St. Joseph, an order of Catholic nuns from LePuy, France. The sisters were brought to the island to educate its children. The school they established thrived, and an academy and convent school was started in 1882. On the site of the original school is another amazing preservation project, which can be found on Calhoun Street between Fourth and Fifth streets. St. Michael Academy, which currently occupies the original building, with its galleried porch, Mansard roof, and classic lines, is one of the more beautiful of Amelia Island’s many church-related structures. The Sisters of St. Joseph brought to Amelia Island to teach grew famous for their beautiful French lace, jams, and jellies, and they used the funds they generated from sales to help fund the school. In 1875, Jean Pierre Augustin Verot, Bishop of St. Augustine, purchased this cottage for $900 for the sisters.
In 1877, during one of the island’s worst yellow fever epidemics, the sisters nursed the sick and dying. It is estimated that 1,600 people lived on the island at that time, and over one thousand contracted the disease. The nuns were called the “Angel’s of Mercy.” They sewed the shrouds for the dead, and people would throw needles and thread weighted with rocks on the nun’s porch to avoid being exposed to the much-feared fever. Two of the sisters lost their lives in the epidemic. Long after the epidemic, when their bodies were moved from temporary graves to Bosque Bello Cemetery, witnesses reported that the bodies were unchanged, and a fragrance of roses emanated from the grave site. By 1993, the house was in great disrepair and became the center of controversy. The church that owned the house and the land it was on wanted to expand its parking lot and tear down the house. The house had long been abandoned and was literally falling down. The church chose not to repair it or try to save it. However, a group of passionate preservationists, the Amelia Island Restoration Foundation, was able to save it. It was renovated and is now a beautifully preserved and important historical property.
Th is article has been reprinted with permission from Dickie Anderson’s book, Great Homes of Fernandina. It is available at Book Loft on Centre Street, Amelia Island Museum of History, and Amelia Island bed-and-breakfast inns. 65 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • APRIL 2019

W
hat a beautiful morning! April always makes me want to get out and play in the garden, but first I want to tell you about some new beauties for your garden, and a few old reliables. Sapphire Surf Bluebeard (Caryopteris x clandonensis) is an eye-catching shrub with a wave of incredible blooms that cascades to the ground. Each cluster of indigo flowers makes an impressive display in mass plantings, borders, or containers. This plant has a compact size, which makes this color-drenched perennial more versatile. A mound-shaped shrub, it grows 2 to 3 feet in height and 3 to 4 feet in width. Sapphire Surf is a surefire lure for butterflies. The blooms last from late summer into the fall, when few others are in bloom. Before the plant bursts into color, the foliage is attractive and fragrant. Plant this beauty in welldrained soil that gets full sun. When planting more than one, plant them 3 to 4 feet apart. This is a low-maintenance shrub that is drought-tolerant. It’s a nice addition to any garden.
TIP OF T HE M O N T H If you’re not sure what fertilizer to use, Milorganite is a sure bet. It strengthens the roots and keeps the plant, grass, or tree green without burning. It’s safe for any time of the year.
Drought-tolerant plants are always a welcome addition to the garden. A new perennial Coreopsis named Buttermilk (PP#27,396) has just arrived. Not only does this plant add a ray of gentle sunshine from June to October, it blooms after many pastel plants have finished for the season. Buttermilk grows fast, and its soft color blends nicely in mixed borders, containers, in mass plantings, or as an accent. The flowers are long, rounded daisy-like petals that surround a golden-brownish eye. This plant requires little if any maintenance. It multiplies quickly and adapts to dry soil. Butterflies will also flock to Buttermilk. Plant in average well-drained soil. It grows 15 inches high and 23 inches wide. The flowers

are a striking contrast to its dark green feathery foliage. How about an incredibly beautiful specimen tree for your landscape? Don’t miss this new PP Magnolia called Centennial Blush. The pink buds that adorn this small tree or shrub open to wonderfully fragrant pink flowers in spring. The buds on this prolific bloomer form at almost every node, yielding a magnificent floral display of delicate pink. It is really a sight to behold. Each flower has 25 to 35 petals, and a mature tree can have many thousands of flowers at the same time! Attractive medium-green foliage follows in the summer, which turns yellow, then bronze in autumn. Plant this tree in partial sun to full sun. Centennial Blush will mature at 12 to 18 feet in height and 10 to 15 feet in width, with an upright oval shape. This tree is adaptable to most soils, and when the leaves drop, it has an interesting branching structure, so it has something to offer in every season. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

pring is a beautiful time in Fernandina Beach. Loquats are ripening all over town, citrus blossoms are exploding, and the restaurant business is starting to boom. Recently, on a particularly perfect evening, I met a handful of friends at Salt Life Food Shack to catch up, shoot the breeze, and share some good food. Salt Life Fernandina Beach is the third location for this restaurant group, but this one is ours. Cool teal, sea foam green, and ocean blue tile surround the bar. Open to both the deck and dining room, the bar overlooks the bustling sidewalk scene, while inside a huge aquarium welcomes guests and televisions play sports and surf videos. At five-thirty on a Thursday evening, the place is packed, and hungry patrons are lining up. I met my friend and mentor, Sally Fulford, at the hostess stand, and we waited for our table at the bar on the deck. Sally and I worked together at Fernandina Beach High School until she retired last year. We also grew up out in Old Town, the original site of the town of Fernandina. We enjoyed a half-dozen Crab Baked Oysters and a couple of Salty Margaritas while swapped stories about good times remembered at Main Beach. Soon we were led upstairs to our table, where to the west we could see the sun setting over the dunes of Fort Clinch. We ordered Avocado Fries and watched a lone surfer catch his last couple of waves for the day. The crispy outer coating of the Avocado Fries paired with its creamy smooth middle where sinfully delicious. As we considered our entrees, our nostalgia-fest was crashed by our good friends, Christie and Carlin, whom we invited to join us. Sally opted to try the Southern Fried Shrimp, a true test for any restaurant that prides themselves on serving fresh, local seafood. Christie and Carlin ordered tacos, choosing the grilled Skirt Steak Tacos and the Poke Tuna Tacos. We ordered a Mexican Roll for the table and a Crab Boil for myself. The Mexican Roll is made with tempura-battered shrimp and 68 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
avocado wrapped in soy paper and topped with sliced ahi, fresh jalapeños, Sriracha, and fish eggs. A real hit at the table, and anyone who loves sushi will love this dish. The Crab Boil was exactly what you hope for: three clusters of steaming hot snow crab, served with crisp corn on the cob, potatoes, onions, and melted butter. Then Christie shared some of her Poke Tuna Taco with me, and I have to admit, I was a little jealous. The tuna is raw and tossed in sesame soy dressing with avocado and wasabi cream, and wrapped in a flour tortilla.
Sally’s fried shrimp came butterflied and lightly breaded in a basket atop a pile of crispy french fries. We had so much fun laughing and hanging out. All around us people were doing the same. The upstairs bar was full, and people were hanging out on couches with camp fire coffee tables. I can’t wait to come back with family and friends. Salt Life shouldn’t be missed. Located at Main Beach across from the Putt Putt, it is open seven days a week from 11am -11pm, midnight on Friday and Saturday. APRIL 2019

undled up on a cool morning and very excited, I gave my friends and guides, Catherine and Thomas Oliver of Amelia Adventures, a hug, buckled my life jacket, and said, “Let’s do it.” Amelia Adventures offers a host of kayak tours. “Whether you want to explore Amelia, Cumberland or Talbot islands, we are ready to go,” says Thomas. This day, I decided to experience Egan’s Creek since I had never ventured into the water between the beautiful green bluffs. Each tour with Amelia Adventures begins with instruction for your level of ability. Thomas made sure that I knew how to balance, grip the paddle for an efficient stroke, go forward, reverse, turn, and even go sideways! Foreshadowing the fun ahead, my son (7) who was riding passenger and clearly unconcerned with paddling, was entertained by an egret fishing for his dinner. Confident in my new skills, we were off. It didn’t take long to figure out why the Olivers’ love this business. To be face-toface with schools of fish striking around me was exhilarating. And to be eye-to-eye with Mr. Alligator soon after as he swam with the tide? White-knuckle electrifying! Although you feel a bit small in comparison to the waters around you, it’s wonderful to be able to paddle to anything that catches your curiosity. For me, a closer look at the Amelia Island Lighthouse was a treat, and Catherine’s sharing of the history and stories of the site was a bonus. Next, we explored the marshland around the Fort Clinch State Park, overflowing with wildlife, including dozens of fiddler crabs dancing on the muddy shore. As we glided along, Thomas shared his vision with me. “We want people to experience the nature and beauty of Amelia and 84 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
Cumberland islands, so we offer something for each person in a family can enjoy—private boat tours, kayaking, and paddle boarding (SUP).” To my daughter’s (11) disappointment, it was a bit cool to SUP, but I’ve paddle-boarded with them before, and it’s a lot of fun. So is a private sunset cruise to Cumberland Island, which we enjoyed that afternoon with Amelia Adventures after our kayaking! If you’ve never cruised to Cumberland, you’re missing out. Not even five minutes into our voyage, we were on our feet smiling as three dolphin dove, frolicked, and splashed portside. Next, a shrimp boat overflowing with catch and chased by a flock of birds passed. As we continued, Thomas shared mysterious stories about the white slithering sands of deserted Tiger Island. When the coastline of Cumberland dawned, wild horses were grazing on the beach, bringing a new sparkle to my daughter’s eyes, while my outdoorsman son spotted a whitetailed deer! The best part of an Amelia Adventures tour is that every trip includes professional photography, capturing the awe you’ve experienced in an album full of smiles. Amelia Adventures promises just that—an adventure around our island and beyond, where you’re guaranteed to enjoy our area’s great natural beauty and intriguing history. The Olivers are a load of fun and great with kids of any age. Speaking of the kiddos, their popular Kid’s Adventure Camp is filling up now, so visit their website for more information. And coming in May, meet the team at their brand new outpost at 432 S. 8th Street. Tour information and camp dates are available at www.AmeliaAdventures.com or by calling 904-500-TOUR. APRIL 2019
