In April each year, the Amelia Islander Magazine publishes our “Home & Design” special issue. This year, as everyone is intimately aware, April follows a difficult and discouraging few weeks at the end of March dominated by an insidious virus called Covid-19. The Covid-19 virus has taken Amelia Island, our country, and much of the world, hostage. As a result of orders from our federal and state governments, the normal rhythms of life have been completely disrupted. As I write this note, we are still on lockdown, but we are hopeful that as April rolls on, we might see treatment advances or some good news that can lead to an easing of social distancing restrictions, thanks to the efforts of our tireless healthcare professionals, medical researchers, and the men and women leading our government’s response to the virus. Whatever the situation on the ground is when you read this, our hearts go out to all those affected by the Covid-19 virus in Nassau County and around the country, those who have been infected as well those whose livelihoods have been affected, which in a tourist area like Amelia Island means many of us. Deana and I pray that conditions will improve and that those who have been impacted by the virus will be able to recover quickly. This is a very difficult time for all, but we lean on our faith to get through it, faith in God and faith in each other. We pray that this virus will leave us, and in the meantime, we will do our best to look after our neighbor and help those who are struggling. That’s the spirit of our country and our community. Things will improve eventually, and we will resume the normal rhythm of our lives, sooner rather than later we hope. Our prayers are with all of you. Since this is our annual Home & Design special issue, we are happy to present the stories of two Amelia Island families and their beautiful homes. As we’ve noted before, turning a house into a home is no small achievement, as it takes a good deal of effort to build a peaceful place to raise a family or to enjoy retirement. In our first feature, Sandra and Ray Borland-Cason wanted a house with more room for kids and grandkids, so they built a home in Golfside South. In the second, Stephanie Goldberg made extensive renovations to an Amelia Island Plantation condominium to create a comfortable retreat for her and her family. Also this month, we look at recent design trends with some of our favorite local experts; enjoy another “Fernandina Faces” from Dickie Anderson; learn about volunteering to protect Egan’s Creek from invasive plants; and much more.

When Stephanie Goldberg found an Amelia Island Plantation condominium that suited her needs, she began an extensive renovation to create a comfortable retreat.
While recent trends remain popular, like a white color palate in the kitchen, new ideas and colors are encouraging homeowners make a personal statement in their homes.
After a busy corporate career, Frances Peters retired to Amelia Island, where she threw her energy into volunteering, eventually starting a group called Front Porch Beads.
As part of Weed Wrangle, a statewide effort to combat invasive species, Troy Lair joined a group volunteers on Egans Creek Greenway to battle the Wild Taro.

Glasgow once said, “is the kind you can sit on a porch swing with, never say a word, then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation that you ever had..” If you ask Ray and Sandra Borland-Cason, they might just say that Mr. Glasgow was talking about them. Originally from Douglas, Georgia, Ray and Sandra married eight years ago and honeymooned on Amelia Island. “We came back one year later to celebrate our anniversary and decided to look at condos,” the couple explains from the swing on their brand-new front porch. Not only did they look, but they bought as well! “We adore life on Amelia Island, walking on the beach, hunting for shark’s teeth, biking, and of course, enjoying

Soon after, unsolicited from the previous owner of the homesite, I received in the mail a custom Arthur Rutenberg house plan, drawn specifically for our parcel!” The couple took the plan to Plantation Housing Corp., who further customized it and agreed to build. “This home and its design are special in many ways,” says Vic Buscaino, president of Plantation Housing Corp. “First, the home site is irregularly shaped and challenging architecturally to provide a main living area on the first floor, but the home design accomplished it well with a fantastic view of the outdoors.” “Other unique features include the master bath’s spa-like feel,” continues Vic, “in which we combined the shower and tub in the same space as you see in some of the top hotels in the world. Another favorite room in the house is the couple’s intimate den, which is an elegant mix of old and new. The 14 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

LOCAL AUTHOR RELEASES CHILDREN’S BOOK ON ABRAHAM LINCOLN April is National Poetry Month, and it’s the perfect occasion to celebrate Amelia Island children’s author Eileen Rajala Meyer and her new children’s, nonfiction, poetry, and picture book, The Superlative A. Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln is famous for many extremes: he was the tallest president, who gave the greatest speech and had the strongest conviction. But did you know that he was also the most distracted farmer, the best wrestler, and the craftiest storyteller? Get to know the personal side of Honest Abe through 19 fresh and funny poems expressing his superlative nature, each accompanied by a brief paragraph providing context and explaining more about the ways in which he excelled. Best of all, readers are encouraged to consider the ways in which they, too, are superlative. Dave Szalay’s charming illustrations are the perfect accompaniment, championing one of our nation’s favorite presidents. To learn more about this Amelia Island author who grew up near the Land of Lincoln, her books, free children’s activity guides, and school programs, visit www.eileenmeyerbooks.com. The Superlative A. Lincoln, which just won a Silver Medal in the 2019 Florida Book Awards Older Children’s category, is available at The Book Loft and online.
TALL SHIPS NIÑA AND PINTA SAIL INTO FERNANDINA BEACH HARBOR The Niña and Pinta are coming to town! The world’s famous Columbus Foundation tall ships are the most historically accurate replicas of Christopher Columbus’s vessels that have ever been built and are the only replicas in existence today. The ships sail together as a floating museum with the purpose of educating the public and students about the history of a Caravel-style sailing ship used during the 15th century. Visitors can step aboard and be whisked back in time to learn about the age of discovery, navigation of the era, the architecture, and what life was like aboard the boats over 500 years ago. The ships’ crews are also ready to answer any question, making a tour a great educational opportunity as well as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The two ships will sail into Fernandina Beach Harbor Marina on April 23 and they will be open for deck tours from April 24 to May 3 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Deck tour tickets are general admission (one price allows you to tour both ships). Prices are $8.50 for adults, $7.50 for seniors, and $6.50 for kids ages 5 to 16. Children ages 4 and under are free. For additional information, contact info@smtsa.org or call (912) 254-0110. DAVID GRIMMEL
All eyes are on the Amelia Island Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) and the awards it received in New York City in January. The CVB was awarded for its work in conjunction with Miles Partnership to produce the official 2019 Amelia Island Visitor Guide, which features an augmented reality (AR) mobile app, one of the first in the industry. The app enables users to activate custom-designed digital content right from its pages, including an expanded collection of customdesigned, three-dimensional animations visitors can bring to life at key locations around the island. At the 63rd annual Adrian Awards Gala in New York, the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI) honored the CVB with two Gold Awards and a Bronze Award at what is the world’s largest and most prestigious travel marketing competition. “It is always an honor to see our marketing team recognized for their hard work and creativity, especially by such an esteemed organization and in such a competitive industry,” said Gil Langley, the CVB’s president and CEO. “The interactive augmented reality tools we introduced added a new dimension to our visitor experience and we’re proud to see our groundbreaking use of the technology recognized by the industry.”

ongolia, Japan, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Iceland, Galapagos, Kenya, Tanzania, Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and Antarctica are all places where wildlife and portrait photographer Steve Leimberg has been making spectacular images. Leimberg, Grand Prize winner of Nikon/Popular Photography’s 2008 International Mentor Series, First Place winner in Photography at the 2014 Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, and FACES winner of Photo District News, seeks out the beauty in what is overlooked or unseen by others. Leimberg’s website, UnSeenImages. com, shows the scope of his travels and the depth and breadth of his work, yet some of his favorite images were made here on Amelia Island. “My website gallery is a place designed to share beauty,” says Leimberg. “Both real and imagined, incredible moments are missed unless you slow down, stop, and look a little more closely—and with different eyes— for the intense color, texture, lines, and shapes, for those moments in time that most others haven’t seen.” Leimberg’s intense desire to “image” people, places, and objects is ironic;
he lacks eidetic memory, a learning disability that prevents him from creating or recalling images in his mind. When he closes his eyes, the world goes black. “Photography brings those images back,” says Leimberg, “and is also a key that opens the door to fascinating people I never would have met and places I never would have gone.” A strong supporter of Wild Amelia and the Amelia Tree Conservancy, the “Bird Man of Amelia” is passionate about preserving the unique environment of Amelia Island. “My fine art nature photography is a way of saying all this beauty is in peril and will soon be lost if we don’t act now to save it!” Leimberg’s book with Dawna and Scott Moore, A Day on Amelia, a sunup-to-sunset photographic exploration of Amelia Island, his Birds of Amelia II, and a new book, A Day at White Oak, can be found at Story & Song Bookstore Bistro, Book Loft, Twisted Sisters, and Coastal Cottage. His fine art work can be viewed and purchased by appointment at his private studio. He also accepts commissions for portraits. n Amelia Island, the name Early McCall is synonymous with trees. McCall, who runs McCall’s Tree Health and Consulting Service, is a certified arborist, and he has the answers for the health and maintenance of your trees. Early, who was named after his grandfather, graduated from North Carolina State University in 1975 with a degree in forestry and a Master’s degree in tree genetics. Early laughed when he mentioned that he had started out at the University of Tampa as a music major. “I was just too much of an outdoors person and knew music wouldn’t work as a career for me.” After a 36-year career at Rayonier, he obtained his certification from the International Society of Arboriculture and made himself available locally to assist property owners in maintaining the health of their trees and palms through pruning, tree risk assessment, diagnosis of disease and insect problems, community tree management, and the protection of trees during construction. “We are able to judiciously prune trees to prepare them for storms, and for maximum optimum health,’ said Early. “We are also able to detect conditions within the soil and/or the tree which may be affecting the health of your trees.” In addition, Early has also been trained in a system called Arborjet Tree I.V., which allows him to insert a plug into a tree to deliver critical pesticides in order to save a tree’s life. Early and his wife, Elizabeth, run McCall’s Tree Service. For more information, call (904) 557-3951 or visit them online at www.McCallTree.com. 26 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

We also provide cleaning and repair service for all makes and models of hearing aids,’ says Dr. Shelly-Lohman. Amelia Audiology offers custom swim plugs, custom hearing protection (for work, sports, and entertainment), and custom communication ear molds. grandchildren. This is the second home on which the Julia Hall Interiors design team has worked with Goldberg to create a comfortable retreat that meets her needs and specifications. While working in New York City and living in New Jersey in 2007, Stephanie and her late husband decided to purchase a home in the Jacksonville area for work reasons, imagining it might be a place where they could retire. But once they discovered Amelia Island, they switched their focus to a home in Amelia Island Plantation. Nothing they found met their needs, so they committed to a remodel, knowing that it would take a lot of work. Their real estate agent recommended Julia Hall Interiors, and the popular island design firm went to work. 32 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
The Goldbergs redesigned the space, creating a large kitchen where they could cook and entertain. They were thrilled with the results. After her husband died, Stephanie decided she didn’t want to continue maintaining the house, but her children convinced her she needed a property on Amelia Island. She watched the real estate market, and eventually she found a five-bedroom condominium that filled the bill. She was quick to call Julie Hall Interiors to once again to help her create a new Amelia Island homeaway-from-home. Work began immediately and is still in progress. Not afraid to take out walls, one major change in the layout involved stealing a bedroom and incorporating the space into the living room. This dramatically APRIL 2020

Stephanie knew that the family piano would be incorporated in the design of the main living area. Her daughter and granddaughter are both piano enthusiasts. A large abstract painting of trees against a gold background adds a dramatic touch that catches the eye as you enter the main living room. The painting is a favorite, and it has hung in all of Goldberg’s previous homes. The bedrooms are open and clutter-free. No distracting bright color to interrupt the soothing neutral tones. The master bedroom is a serene and sophisticated retreat, with its stunning Mr. Brown London brass bed and muted monochromatic palette. The Goldberg condominium offers an open floor plan that works well for family gatherings or the entertaining that Stephanie enjoys. She is very much a part of the on-going design work and selection of furnishings. The on-going work will eventually include the development of the outdoor terraces to create new living spaces on both the ocean and street sides of the condominium. Although far from New York, the Goldberg home is a reflection of a city girl’s love of the glamorous—golden details, mirrored shapes, and elegant open spaces. APRIL 2020

bringing back color While recent trends remain popular, like a white color palate in the kitchen, new ideas and colors are encouraging homeowners to make a personal statement in their homes. BY JULIE SIMMONS
W
hile white kitchens have been front-and-center for some time now, colors are stepping onto the stage this year to compete with the reigning star for the attention of homeowners and remodelers. That’s what this year is all about: recent trends giving a little room to some new options for your home, interesting possibilities that allow you to take the story in your own unique direction. If you’ve just remodeled your kitchen, don’t get nervous! “We still see a sea of white, gray, and neutrals, stemming from the desire to look perfect on Instagram, create resale value, and to be safe,” says Robyn Branch, Associate ASID, Robyn Branch Design. The trend isn’t out, but yes, it’s fading, particularly in high-end design, which is opting for individuality and the opportunity to tell your own story in your home design. “We are seeing clients launching with neutral palates, and then craving definition and color,” notes Robyn. “That’s when it gets super interesting to provide the hues with wallpaper, rugs, art, and other accents.” All designers agree that painted cabinetry and furniture are trending in particular. Think about two tones, like a 41 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
black island base with white cabinetry, or on Amelia Island, something with the Pantone color of the year, which is classic blue. “It’s a color that anticipates what’s going to happen next,” says Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute. Locally, this color mimics the deep blue sea! So how can you organically build this tone into your future home design? Tiffany Hinton, designer and founder of Lola Interiors and co-owner of Cape House, encourages clients to mix patterns and shapes. “While a collected look, with a nod back to traditional, is often what we are striving towards, clients want a bit of personality, a little edge, and that’s where pattern play can set any space apart,” she says. Think of a typical farmhouse turned sophisticated with European inspirations. Pair antique with modern or traditional floral and block with today’s solids and geometric shapes. When it comes to texture, last year was all about natural wood tones, Tiffany notes, while this year welcomes all sorts of expanded textures, with cane and rattan battling for the continued on page 43. top spot. “You can see these textures on cabinets, furniture, pillows, accessories, you name it,” she says. Robyn’s favorite presentation is wallpaper. “Wallpaper is phenomenal, and individuality is key,” she explains. “Made of wood, fiber, or hand painted, use them for walls or ceilings – the entire space is important.” “I believe every element you select in your design is important,” says Julie Johnson of Julia Hall Interiors, “but at the same time, I am a big proponent of comfort. I suggest choosing what you love. What makes you happy to look at each and every day? Old mixes with new if you love it! And if it’s functional for you and how you live, even better!” Whatever you choose, the trend today is about you, and what tells your story. “Individual and curated items are key to a well put together home,” says Robyn. “Traditional decor done right is fierce, modern, softer, and more comfortable. The individual personalities drive this, and make sense of it.” As you think about your new home, your old home made new, or just your home, remember: at the end of the day, the latest trends don’t really matter all that much. Do you love it? Do the things in your house bring you and your loved ones closer? Those are the most important trends in home design, and we encourage everyone to keep these values front-and-center in your home design.

Frances Peters BY DICKIE ANDERSON PHOTO BY STEVE LEIMBERG, UNSEENIMAGES.COM
F
rances Peters and her husband, Dan, make their home in Amelia Park. These world travelers treasure the small-town feel of Amelia Island, especially its friendly front porch culture. Peters, originally from England, is a former IT troubleshooter for IBM. Her first move was to Canada, and from there it was on to California. She jokes that she traveled so much during her professional career that she needed Marriott sheets to feel at home. But then her life changed dramatically when a chance meeting on an airplane turned into romance and marriage. Frances and her now-husband Dan had properties in Nevada, Ohio, and even a boat in San Francisco Bay. They now spend most of their time on Amelia Island when not pursuing their love of travel. The couple has traveled all over Europe, mainland China, Russia, the Arctic Circle, Africa, throughout South and Central America, the Galapagos Islands, and the Azores. Some of her favorite memories include fishing for piranha in the Amazon and dipping her toes into the Straits of Magellan. After her busy career, Peters threw her abundant energy and talent into volunteer efforts. Lately she has volunteered with Kenya Partners (www.kenyapartners.com). When they are able, the couple plans to volunteer with the charity in Kenya. She also has a special place in her heart for Cuba and has delivered donations there, hoping to return when she can. On a local level, Peters has organized Front Porch Beads, a group of women who gather on the wrap-around porch that hugs her Amelia Park house. When she began to gather ladies who wanted to learn more about stringing beads, her porch was the perfect venue. Long a collector of stretchy bracelets as souvenirs, she decided to fix some of them up. She bought some beads, and then some more beads. She had such fun stringing beads that she shared her passion with family while on vacation. She soon had them all making bracelets and “decompressing.” 45 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
Returning to Amelia, she invited some friends to see if they too would enjoy the creative process of creating jewelry from a wide assortment of colorful and unique beads. “I was just very lucky to hit upon something that both I and so many other ladies enjoy,” says Peters. “We happily welcome more volunteers, more bead donations, and Internet sales!” Peters’ groups have met at Story and Song Bookstore Bistro and the Nassau County Council on Aging, but their favorite place to meet is on her Amelia Park porch. Incredibly organized, Frances has everything ready when her 20 or so volunteers show up, including a large collection of beads and all the supplies needed to create wonderful jewelry, or unique wine glass markers. The group sells their creations through a partnership with Story and Song Bookstore Bistro, donating to the Micah’s Place Resale Store and various special events as well. When $1,000 is reached, the group votes on which needy local cause will benefit. Micah’s Place, Take Stock in Children, Starting Point, Arts Alive, and Council On Aging have all benefited through the years from the efforts of the beading ladies of Amelia. Peters looks forward to more travel with husband Dan, but always returning to her beloved porch and her group of talented beaders. Creativity, friendship, and contributing to the community—a perfect combination. For more information on Front Porch Beads, visit www.frontporchbeads.com. APRIL 2020

striking shrubs To add color to your garden, try shrubs like the new Daphne Marianni, the evergreen Royal Hawaiian Blanche Ito, or the eye-catching perennial Jacob’s Ladder. BY BETTY MORRELL
A
pril showers bring May flowers, but with the mild winter we have had, many of those May blooms are attracting our attention now. I’ll take flowers whenever they decide to show off. As I am always looking for new plants, I came across a really interesting PP shrub called Daphne Marianni, a showpiece for your shade garden. Marianni has striking yellow-to-cream edged, glossy pointed leaves and fragrant pink flowers that appear from February to late March, a time of year when nothing much else is blooming. This shrub is an outstanding semi-dwarf selection with a rounded mounding form that will light up your shade garden year-round. Not only is the foliage beautiful, but the abundant bouquets of highly fragrant flowers of soft pink-to-white inside and bright purplish-lavender outside will fill the garden with a sweet perfume. Marianni blooms from January through April, depending on the weather. Daphne is an upright shrub that grows 3 to 4 feet in height with a spread of 3 feet. Plant this shrub in

full shade or a spot that doesn’t get afternoon sun. Once established, they are drought-tolerant. They can be used in the landscape as a hedge or they can be planted alone as a specimen, a great addition to cottage gardens, woodland, Asian, or xeriscape (low water needs). Another intriguing plant is Royal Hawaiian ‘Blanche Ito’. This shrub is a handsome pincushion with grey-green leaves and orange-gold flowers, budding in winter and flowering by spring. The blooms on this evergreen shrub emerge at the branch tips as the yellow pincushion, and as the buds bloom, they turn red, making a dramatic statement in the landscape or in a container. Plant Blanche in full sun, where it will grow 4 to 5 feet in height and the same in spreading width. Once this

shrub becomes established, it will be drought-tolerant and hardy. By the way, Blanche makes a great cut flower, lasting in a vase for at least 16 days. A must-have perennial is the Jacob’s Ladder series of Polemonium. These perennials are eye-catching and will light up your garden with great color. Bressingham Purple forms an amazing lush mound of deep green, ferny foliage, which takes on dark purple tones in spring and fall. Blooms of star-shaped rich blue flowers are held high on burgundy stems in early summer. Because of its compact size, it lends itself to rock gardens, borders in the flower beds, and containers. This little evergreen plant grows in full sun to part shade (best to have it in a spot where it is sheltered from the hot afternoon sun). It can reach 18 to 23 inches in height and spreads from 10 to 12 inches. If you don’t have some of these in your garden, try them, you will be happy you did. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

very now and then the stars align, good fortune rolls out before you, and doors swing open, and that’s precisely how I felt walking into Lagniappe recently with my two daughters for a lovely evening of food and family. Our hosts were longtime friends and Amelia Island restaurateurs Melanie and Brian Grimley. Lagniappe is the culmination of years of love and life distilled into the nuances that make special the spaces shared by friends, a place where the food and spirits reflect the wisdom attained only through living fully.
The girls were quite impressed with the decor and loved the beautiful fire-lit patio. They were happy as clams, and Chef Carey Todd made them feel right at home with some helpful suggestions. Lydia is easy to please: a nice steak, some fries, and to my delight, roasted brussel sprouts, and she is in heaven. Abigail, however, is another story. A vegetarian, she delights in pasteurized processed food-like substances and bristles at most things green. Chef Carey, rising to the challenge, promised a vegetarian plate she could not resist if she let him choose the contents. She agreed, but added a side of french fries, just in case. 54 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
One thing we all agreed on was cheese. Our first course was a delicious cheese board featuring four different cheeses with toast points, berries, jams, nuts, and honey. Abigail happily gave me a full report on each cheese, assuring me it would be perfect for the article. She found everything to her liking, and we left the board mostly empty. While I received my ripened dairy dissertation, I was surprised by the chef with a seared scallop course. The dish was simple: two scallops well-seared and sliced in half horizontally, with a peach glaze, a few micro greens, and thin slices of chili pepper. The flavor was transcendental, whisking me to my childhood eating peaches canned by my grandmother from her pantry in Sopchoppy on the Panhandle. The sweet flavor of the scallop played perfectly with the zip from the chili and peppery greens. The glaze perfectly balanced the lively flavors for a spectacular appetizer. Next our entrees arrived, first Lydia’s Steak Frites, a perfect medium rare, and for me, a steaming Bouillabaise full of shrimp and mussels. The showstopper was Abigail’s vegetarian plate. This veritable cornucopia of vegetarian treasures would satiate the most discerning meatless diner. The board was nearly a yard long and filled with wonderful offerings like Spinach-Stuffed Tomatoes, Yellow Carrot Puree, a lavendercolored Risotto, Flash-Fried Okra, Grilled Asparagus, Grilled Spring Onions, Roasted Cremini Mushrooms, and other little accents that made the dish extraordinary. We took a great deal of it home, where it made a few more meals for her. When our plates were cleared, the girls enjoyed a slice of Hummingbird Cake while I sipped the last of a glass of wine and reflected on the meal. There is nothing like spending time with family and loved ones, and that is precisely how everyone is treated at Lagniappe. Located at 4810 First Coast Highway near Harris Teeter, they serve lunch and dinner seven days a week and feature a Southern breakfast menu starting at 10 am on Sundays. APRIL 2020

wrangling on Egans Creek BY TROY ALLEN LAIR • PHOTOS BY KATHY RUSSELL

ecently my friends, Jane and Doug Bailey, invited me to join them for a day of removing invasive plants growing in Egans Creek Greenway. This was part of Weed Wrangle, a larger statewide volunteer effort to help rescue public parks and green spaces from invasive species through hands-on removal of harmful trees, vines, and flowering plants. We met behind the Atlantic Rec Center on a recent morning and Kathy Russell, Parks and Recreation Manager, gave us our instructions. There were about 15 volunteers of all ages standing around a table peering at samples of the culprit: Wild Taro (Colocasia esculenta). Although it’s a pretty plant, Kathy explained it is considered an aggressive weed and has formed several dense stands along the waterways and wet soils in the Greenway, displacing native vegetation and disrupting animal habitats. After filling out my waiver form, we hiked into the south end of the Greenway to a section of the Red Trail, where we discovered a several hundred-square-foot stand of wild taro. Kathy handed out shovels, gloves, and buckets, then helped us find spots to start our work. “Staff and volunteers have been battling this plant in the Greenway for a few years, by hand and with herbicides,” said Kathy. “The portion of the trail where we’ve been working is really looking good. But this area has not been addressed yet, so by attacking it now we hope to stop these plants from spreading into new areas or back into areas we’ve already cleared.” I grabbed a shovel and found an unclaimed area at the 68 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
bank of a shallow stream. The soil was wet and reluctant to let go of the plants. But using my shovel as a lever, I was able to pull them out one at a time, along with their muddy roots. Some of the plants had large underground tubers or “corms.” Kathy explained it was important to get as many of the roots and runners as possible, and that even a small piece of the corm left behind will quickly regenerate a new plant. After a half hour or so, I’d removed dozens of plants, clearing only a few feet of the bank, but behind me a large pile of wild taro was taking shape. The work was dirty, and several times my feet sank ankle deep into the muddy bank. But that was better than the loud “kersplash” I heard as someone downstream lost their grip on a plant and fell back into the stream. The ensuing laughter assured me that no one was hurt. After about two hours, we reached the end of our allotted time, but looking around we’d cleared only about a third of the wild taro stand. I was stunned to learn that once established, invasives like taro can never be fully eradicated, merely pushed back and controlled so that our native flora can compete and flourish. Kathy told us (with a grin) that since she now had our emails, we would be hearing from her as more Weed Wrangle events are scheduled. I’m grateful they are fighting this problem, and I know many more will want to be involved. It’s a great way to learn about plants, get some sun and exercise, and do something important for Amelia Island. For more information, email Kathy at krussell@fbfl.org. APRIL 2020
