Each spring, as the Amelia Island Chamber Festival approaches and we start planning our coverage, we can’t help but get excited about the calendar of spectacular concerts. Like many Amelia Islanders, we have become enamored of the musical style in which we’ve been immersed because with this festival. Since our introduction to so many world-class musicians and masterpiece compositions, words like “septet,” “fugue,” and “virtuoso” are slowly settling into our local vernacular. Our knowledge of chamber music has undoubtedly grown over the years, and it has only piqued our appetite for more. Fortunately, each year festival organizers manage to bring us not only more amazing musicians from around the world, but more diverse concerts to cater to a variety of tastes. Although the configuration of musicians may change, what is constant is the beauty and extraordinary adaptability of this musical style. When music originally written centuries ago for the private chambers of the elite is performed in settings like the Palace Saloon, Fort Clinch, and historic churches, the performances take on new dimensions. Concertgoers can witness before their very eyes (and ears) how a composition can be affected by the specific setting. One of the most dramatic examples of this in this year’s festival is the June 2 performance, “Hoedown: Dancing Fiddle” at Walker’s Landing, Omni Amelia Island Plantation. This and other concerts promise to be unique musical experiences, brought to us right here in our own backyard. We can hardly wait! This month, we are thrilled to kick off a new recurring column called “Great Houses of Fernandina.” Dickie Anderson has informed and delighted us in our Page of History column over the years, and we thank her for bringing us this new series that will focus on some of the fabulous historic homes that add so much to the character and beauty of our downtown area. We start with the house that seems to stand at the gateway to the downtown: the Hoyt House. Also this month, we hope you’ll enjoy a Fernandina Faces column on fiber artist Billie McCray; a historic backyard adventure at Fort Clinch; a fabulous dinner out at Bonito; and much more. See you around the island!

C hamber Music F estival A Musical Family Reunion

From Norway to London, from Texas to Atlanta, renowned musicians are traveling from near and far to come to Amelia! Ladies, ﬁnd that summer hairstyle, and gentleman, reserve your tickets - it’s time for the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival! For the 11th straight season, our favorite musical artists cannot wait to reunite for the opportunity to play, learn, and enjoy Amelia Island together—nor can we wait to hear them. The 2012 AICMF will take place in 17 concerts across several venues on the island between May 13 and June 8, 2012. So, what is Chamber Music? Traditionally, it is a small group of artists gathering to play classical music. The word “chamber” historically implies the musical selections are appropriate for performance in small venues. The neat thing about the AICMF is that it takes chamber music to unique levels, stretching the style of the music and the small venues. “Last year, nearly 3,300 people attended the performances of over 70 artists from around the globe who performed in 12 different island venues,” says Festival Coordinator Kimberly Gustafson. Amelia Island has quickly become addicted to chamber music. “The ﬁrst year we attended, it was just because the

concert was held at our church,” says AICMF volunteer and regular attendee Rich Smith. “I always thought of Chamber music as stiff, dull, and not too interesting, but my wife and I sat in amazement at the spectacular music that was just beautifully performed in our own church in our own town. We’ve been involved ever since!” Rich’s story is the same for many of the volunteers and attendees who now eagerly await the AICMF each year. The Southeast Tourism Society selected the festival as a Top 20 Event for May 2012. “The original conception of the AICMF was to present music at multiple venues around the island,” says Artistic Director, AICMF founder, and principal cellist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Christopher Rex. “We want to appeal to different people, different tastes, allow for different ambiances, and, ultimately, give the community the opportunity to connect with the festival.” Another unique feature of the AICMF is its original presentation of classical music. “The festival strives to meet a wide range of musical tastes—traditional chamber music string quartets, larger chamber music ensembles, some including

voice, guitar, and wind instruments, and non-traditional music that explores American folk traditions,” says Rex. An example of the AICMF’s appeal to a wide variety of tastes is the Saturday, June 2 concert, “Hoedown: Dancing Fiddle,” at Walker’s Landing, Omni Amelia Island Plantation. This event is part of the “Beer & G Strings” series of the festival, which always promises a relaxed setting and a cash bar available. This concert features the April Verch Band. Verch is a renowned Canadian fiddler, singer, songwriter, and stepdancer, and concert organizers are expecting a sold-out event. The festival includes two additional “Beer & G Strings” concerts, both at the Palace Saloon. “There’s nothing like hearing several million dollars’ worth of cellos and violins in a bar on a stage—pure joy!” says AICMF attendee and volunteer Susan Casillas. The first, “Beer & G Strings I: Music of Passion and Fire,” will be Sunday, May 20, and features the music of Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, and Ginestera. The Linden String Quartet will play with Elizabeth Pridgen and Natasha Paremski, both AICMF regular pianists, and Christopher Rex, cello. The second, “Beer & G Strings II: Lyric Cello,” is Wednesday, May 23, with the music of Verdi, Puccini, Delibes,

Bizet, Faure, Sibelius, and Granados, performed by cellist Lynn Harrell, who is not only an Amelia Island favorite, but an internationally renowned soloist, chamber musician, recitalist, conductor, and teacher. Additionally, he is a frequent guest of many leading orchestras and is considered the one of the pre-eminent cellists performing today. Performing alongside Harrell will be James Dunham, viola, Elizabeth Prigden, piano, and Christopher Rex, cello. The Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival exists to enrich our community by providing access to great music. “Because of this festival, those of us lucky enough to live on Amelia Island can sit in the front row as world-class musicians play some of the world’s greatest music,” says volunteer and attendee Bob Bolan. While the festival is a treasure for our island, the artists claim that it is also a gift to them. “What a lot of people don’t realize is that many of our artists rarely get to play together,” says Gustafson. “Our festival falls at the end of symphony season, so coming to Amelia is a reunion for them each year.” The Friday, June 8, grand ﬁnale concert is titled for just this theme, “From Our Family to Yours.” This evening includes artists who are actual family, and all who are musical family. violin, and Julie Coucheron, piano, will perform the music of Vitale, Borodin, and Chausson, with husband-and-wife team, Elissa Koljonen, violin, and Roberto Diaz, viola, and brothers, Charles Rex, violin, and Christopher Rex, cello. “These artists are at the top of their ﬁelds, and we get to see them all together!” enthuses Gustafson. “For the artists, the goal of the festival has always been to collaborate, mix, and play together,” says Rex. “As we’ve grown, years have passed, and we’ve played together, we’ve grown into a family, and each year we can’t wait to play together, get to know each other better, and have fun. Anyone who performs at Amelia is part of our family—and they return for a musical family reunion each summer.” The artists reciprocate the feelings Rex has of the musical family. Cellist and associate professor at Southern Methodist University in Texas Andres Diaz reiterates the companionship among the artists. “The best part of participating in the festival,” he says, “is seeing each other, rehearsing, playing, and then going out together afterwards.” As you look at the festival schedule (www.aicmf.com), you will see four concerts entitled, “Un Voyage Musical Francais: A Journey through the Art and Music of France.” These concerts encompass French chamber music of the 17th and 18th centuries, the Romantic Age, Impressionism, and the 20th

century. This theme runs through the festival in celebration of the 450th anniversary of the French arrival on Amelia Island and the first of eight flags under which Fernandina has flown. “We anticipate these performances to be hits,” explains Gustafson. “Paintings will be presented alongside the music at some of the concerts.” This is true for the Friday, May 25, “Songs on a Summer Night: Un Voyage Musical Francais III” at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church at 7:30 p.m., which includes pianist Robert Spano, music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Aspen Music Festival and School, playing the music of Berlioz, Debussy, and Franck. In addition to Amelia Island enrichment and artist collaboration, Rex explains how the festival aims to provide an educational component. The AICMF regularly features performances by the Beth Newdome Fellowship Artists, who are schooled at the nation’s most prestigious conservatories and are coached by the world’s finest classical musicians. This year, graduates from Philadelphia’s internationally famous Curtis Institute will perform. The Dover String Quartet will perform beside Roberto Diaz, viola, and Christopher Rex, cello, on Sunday, June 3 at Memorial United Methodist Church at 5 p.m. The success of the festival would not be possible without a host of volunteers. Through them, the entire purpose of the festival is realized, bringing music and people together. Meet

volunteer Bruce Buchanan. Like Smith, he reluctantly attended his first concert, but the experience led to a whole new hobby. “That evening, I volunteered to be a page-turner for the next year’s festival,” he explains. “I played piano as a kid and I assumed I could still read music, but I quickly realized I could not.” Up for the challenge, Buchanan networked with festival contacts, learned to read music, and started taking piano lessons from festival volunteer and local instructor Emma Bledsoe, seeking to one day be able to turn pages completely unprepared, if necessary. Buchanan found much joy in his piano practice and today is quite accomplished, with classical pieces as his favorite. As for the page-turning, “Last year, I was called in at the last minute to turn pages, and I was able to do it completely unprepared,” Buchanan says with a laugh, quickly reiterating that he always prefers to practice in advance! This year, he is excited about again volunteering as a page-turner and spending time in a private piano lesson with Will Ransom, the Mary L. Emerson Professor of Piano and head of the piano faculty at Emory University in Atlanta. Ransom is founder and artistic director of the Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta and in the summers serves as artistic director of the HighlandsCashiers Chamber Music Festival in North Carolina. “I think the educational component of the festival is a tremendous opportunity for young musicians to be mentored by some of the top performers in the world,” says Buchanan. “And this year, I get to take part as well—exciting!” The chance to reunite with the volunteers is a treat for the artists, as well. “All the people whom we have had the pleasure of meeting over the years are like family - generous, kind and supportive,” says pianist Wendy Chen. “This helps us to give a fantastic concert every time.” The Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit. Entering its second decade, it relies upon and still exists because of community support, both financially and with volunteers. “This festival puts our island on the international radar, creating a reputation whereby musicians seek the festival. Our community has demonstrated a commitment to support this cultural event, both financially and through the many volunteers,” explains Casillas, who encourages others to call the festival hotline if they are considering volunteering. WADSWORTH’S LAUNCHES NEW CLOTHING LABEL Brenda DeMarco, owner of Wadsworth’s in downtown Fernandina Beach, has teamed up with her daughter, Angela DeMarco, to create their own clothing label, Wadsworth’s Amelia Island, featuring Fernandina Beach’s favorite mascot, a shrimp. “In July of 2011, Angela drew a shrimp for me because we were discussing the fact that, in all my years of buying, I have never come across a shrimp logo on clothing” explains DeMarco. That drawing remained on her refrigerator for months, until one day DeMarco decided to take it to work. “That same morning someone came in to sell me a shirt with a turtle on it, and then later someone else came in with a salmon logo. Finally, I thought ‘We’ll just have to make our own shrimp logo!’” “The new line is meant to promote a sense of pride in our home town and in the importance of supporting our local community,” says DeMarco. That means working with local companies as much as possible, including P5 Productions and Hamilton Press. The eco-friendly line includes men’s cotton Polos ($60); men’s bamboo/ poly Polos ($65); ladies’ 3/4-sleeve-length Polo ($59.50); visors and caps ($22); and oversized bags ($38.50). “We’re already working on some new items, like T-shirts, so stay tuned!” says DeMarco.

ntique and vintage appliances evoke the comforts of hearth and home. Unlike many appliances today, vintage appliances were often built of sturdy natural materials and meant to last. They may recall the old family home or remind us of our grandparents and great grandparents. One vintage household item that conjures up the idea of a simpler time is an icebox. Amelia Island Antiques has recently acquired a handsome wooden icebox that would make a wonderful addition to any kitchen. The top opens for storage and it would make a great bar. An icebox is a non-mechanical kitchen appliance that was in most homes before the development of powered refrigeration devices. Iceboxes had hollow walls that were lined with tin or zinc and packed with insulating materials. A large block of ice was held in a tray or compartment near the top of the box. Cold air circulated down and around storage compartments in the lower section. Some ﬁner models

had spigots for draining ice water from a catch pan or holding tank. The melted ice had to be replenished regularly, normally with new ice from a delivery man. Commonly iceboxes were made of wood, most probably for ease of construction, insulation, and aesthetics. Like this one, many were handsome pieces of furniture. The horse-drawn ice wagon and the daily occupation of the iceman, who made regular door-to-door deliveries of block ice for iceboxes, was as much a social institution as the milk man. Apartment buildings had small doors that opened to the ice box from the back porch. The ice man would bring the block of ice and insert it into the ice box through this door. Children would go on the ice wagon and take chips of fallen ice as treats during the summer. The Hoyt House, a little Victorian gem, is located at one of the busiest intersections on the island, at Centre and 8th Streets, and currently operates as a bed and breakfast. Set back from the street and tucked under a giant canopy of live oaks, it’s easy to miss. The original owner, Fred Willis Hoyt, was originally from Meredith, New Hampshire. Following the Civil War, like many other entrepreneurs, he sought his fortune in the South. Settling in Fernandina, he became a successful by selling groceries, hardware, and building materials to meet the demands of this rapidly expanding seaport community. In 1887, Hoyt saw the need for a bank and became one of the founders and the ﬁrst president of the island’s First National Bank. When it came time to build his home, he hired the most skilled builder in the area, John R. Mann, who built the home in 1905. Mann would later build many of the ﬁner houses and buildings in town, including Villa Las Palmas and the Keystone Hotel. In addition, he was involved in the building of the Fernandina’s handsome Victorian courthouse and Dungeness, the Carnegie mansion on Cumberland Island. He was also a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, where a memorial window honors him and his wife. The Hoyt House is said to be modeled after one of the cottages built on Jekyll Island and has been cited in the National Register of Historic Places as “noteworthy for its octagonal two-story bay, cross gable, balcony, hip-roof, hip-dormers, and

bracketed eaves.” Its interior is crafted out of the finest heart of pine and oak. Each of its seven coal-burning fireplaces has a unique carved mantel. The Hoyt House has some unique characteristics, thanks to the transplanted Yankee who built it. Most noteworthy are the “Yankee” doors, double doors at the main entry, meant to keep out the cold. A wraparound porch, typical of many Queen Anne style homes, offers a variety of quiet, cool places to sit. Hoyt and his wife, Kate, had three sons and built an amazing third-floor playroom with a stage, a piano, and a puppet theater. This later became a private apartment. When Hoyt died, the house was sold to Everett Mizell (1882-1955), whose family occupied the house for the next 50 years. Mizell also succeeded Fred Hoyt as the president of the First National Bank of Fernandina. The collapse of the Florida land boom and the great depression put pressure on Florida banks, and there were some rough years. The First National Bank survived thanks to Mizell’s good management. Following the Mizell family, the house served as offices for local lawyers. In 1993, it was opened as a bed and breakfast. It has changed hands several times, and several additions have been made, including a swimming pool and cozy, well-appointed bar on the first floor. In keeping with the history of the building, current owners Myrta Defendina and Deborah Gold offer a Victorian tea complete with costumed servers. To enter the Hoyt House is to go back in time and appreciate the welcoming and intimate spaces created so many years ago by John Mann.

illie Mc Cray has talent oozing from every pore and a smile that’s just as big as her talent. This artist has lived at American Beach for the past ten years, in a beautiful home designed by her husband, Nathaniel, an architect. Visiting with them and listening to Billie describe her art, her family, and her philosophy of life is a treat. Born in Tuskegee, Alabama to a mother who instilled a “can do” spirit in her, Billie says, “I was never allowed to say, ‘I can’t.’ My mother would just say, ‘Try it again.’” It is a lesson she lives by even today, and that philosophy has driven her to overcome challenges in her art. She was pursuing an elementary education degree when she met Nathaniel, or “Nat,” who was in architecture school in Tuskegee. Now married 45 years, they moved after college to Jacksonville for Nat’s job with a large commercial engineering firm. After sending their daughter Natalie to college, Billie pursued two degrees and worked for Bell South at the same time. A favorite Sunday afternoon pastime during this time was to drive up to American Beach, where they bought a lot in 1984. At that point, however, building a second home was not in the budget. Finally, ten years ago, they built Nat’s design of a beautiful open home with a view of the ocean. But the home’s open spaces caused another problem: how to decorate the soaring walls? Nat had a favorite artist named Memphis Wood, who taught at Jacksonville University, and he kept saying that her work would look great on the staircase wall. Well, that made Billie a little jealous, and she decided to craft a piece of art for that spot herself. That was the trigger to release Billie’s latent artistic talent. For years, she had made quilts or clothes from someone else’s patterns, but now she turned toward an artistic process called “fiber art,” and it is all her own creation. She weaves, rolls, and twists objects she has found into bright colorful, Africaninspired artwork. It’s not just wall hangings—although that is a large part of her work—but birds and fish and dolls and baskets, all with intense, attention-grabbing colors. She finds her material wherever she can and puts the cloth together

with beads, shells, rhinestones, buttons, or earrings—in short, whatever is available. Some of her birds are fashioned from discarded gloves, others from old dresses or pocketbooks, with the bird’s feet made from spoons or crochet needles. Plastic detergent bottles have been covered and turned into dolls. One piece of art uses a sink drain cover as the base for a bead design. Her large baskets are covered clothes-line cord that has been sewn together. It is all amazing, and the more you study the work, the more amazing it becomes. She is particularly proud of a wall hanging she did in tribute to MaVynne Betsch, known as the Beach Lady of American Beach. It was made of her discarded clothes and the buttons she wore in her hair. “MaVynne was a great person who did a lot for her community,” says Billie. “She left a legacy and an example for us all to follow.” That piece of art may be seen at the Benjamin Carter American Beach Community Center. Billie’s work as a whole is also a tribute to another woman: a mother who taught her daughter to say, “Yes, I can!” And, by the way, Nat thinks her art looks magniﬁcent on that open staircase wall.

or Shrimp Festival this year, many local gardens were adorned with the latest blossoming plants, flowers, trees, and vines. There was beauty all around, a sight to be appreciated. Beautiful plants and flowers boost the spirit, and so I often enjoy nursery-hopping: browsing through a nursery or grower’s field and losing myself in the plants. I find so many interesting plants, both old and new. Gazing at seas of color helps me to envision the new plants in my garden. Shades of lavender to deep purple make a wonderful splash of color in a garden. Texas sage, a native to the Southwest and northern Mexico, is one of the strongest shrubs in those areas. Sometimes called purple sage, it can face droughts, freezes, high winds, salt spray, and full Florida summer sunlight, and still remain beautiful. The leaves have an attractive velvety touch. The leaves are wavy, oval, and onehalf- to one-inch-long. Five-lobed tubular one-half to one-inch flowers have spotted throats and resemble those of a foxglove. The flowers appear after summer rains, sometimes covering the plants with lavender blossoms for a spectacular

You can use a 8-4-8 fertilizer for all of the above, or you can use Milorganite (my favorite standby as you can use it on any plant, grass, tree, ﬂower, or vegetable) anytime and as often as you wish.

display that lasts a week at a time. Texas sage is a good choice for container pots, foundation plants, hedges, barriers, windbreaks, or screens. Children love the velvety feel of the leaves. The dried leaves and flowers can be brewed into a good bedtime herbal tea that is said to be useful for treating cold and flu symptoms. Another purple beauty is the Tibouchina, also known as princess flower. Of Brazilian origin, it features showy fivepetaled purple flowers and large, deeply veined, hairy leaves. In fact, the leaves are so unusually hairy that they almost feel like rabbit’s fur! Its brilliant royal purple, three- to five-inch-wide flowers bloom

in clusters. Tibouchina prefers rich, welldrained, slightly acid soil. The shrubs have a tendency to be leggy and should be pruned lightly after every bloom cycle, and somewhat more heavily in spring. They will re-sprout quickly after heavy pruning. Pinch the tips of young plants to encourage bushiness. Another one of my favorite purple beauties is king’s mantle (Thunbergia erecta). A native of Africa, it boasts eyecatching ﬂowers that are two to three inches wide and consist of a creamy white tube with petals of a rich dark purplish blue and dark yellow throats. King’s mantle will bloom in great profusion, with individual blossoms and often small clusters. These ﬂowers have a faint but pleasant scent. King’s mantle will grow and bloom in partial sun to partial shade and prefers ordinary, but well-drained soil. Although somewhat drought-tolerant, liberal watering and an occasional dose of fertilizer will keep it lush. hen Debbie and Tony Lott decided to retire in the South after living in Hudson, OH, they knew for sure they wanted to live near water. After a short hiatus on Bald Head Island, NC, and living through several hurricanes, the couple searched out Amelia Island as a second home, a warm and safe getaway from the sometimes inclement weather of the Carolinas. They hired a realtor and perused some beach cottages and condos around the island, but there was something missing in those places. A memory from Debbie’s childhood brought a wistful longing for a different kind of house. When the agent brought them to see a spacious country residence located on the Amelia River, the couple knew they had found their home. “The house reminded me of my grandmother’s farmhouse in Swanzey, NH,” says Debbie. “Her house was a former boarding house, full of family heirlooms. what I wanted in my riverfront home.” Sadly, that New Hampshire home was lost in a tragic fire, along with her loving grandmother and aunt. Debbie was determined to keep their memories alive with her Amelia Island home. “The house has a New Hampshire feel to it,” says Debbie. “It’s comfortable, casual, and filled with a conglomeration of family pieces, things from secondhand stores and a few new items we purchased on the island.” The floors and counters are old heart pine. Much of the artwork and furniture has traveled to the South, as well, including her aunt’s dropleaf table and her mother’s Bermuda prints. Her mother-in-law was a quilter and nearly a dozen handmade quilts are found throughout the house. Debbie’s father’s hand-crafted doll furniture graces shelves in the dining room. The family’s antique corner cabinet stands proudly in the living room. as a bar. Epitomizing the farmhouse ambience, the porches are ideal for entertaining a few friends or even a large gathering. For hubby Tony, an avid fisherman, the beautiful views of the river mean dropping a line whenever he desires. Sea trout and flounder are frequently found on the menu at the Lott house. A deep-water dock welcomes visitors by boat, particularly their sailing chums from North Carolina. Four bedrooms and guest suite come in handy when the family comes to visit. Their three grown children and five grandchildren love the picturesque pool and the yard with plenty of room to play or rest. Just as Debbie’s grandmother’s house was a flurry of activity, the Lotts’ riverfront home is alive with goings-on

nearly every day. Debbie is one of the founding members of Flowering Fernandina, and she is always working in her garden or potting some plants to be donated to the downtown’s beautiﬁcation effort. Her private potting shed holds tools and gardening equipment, everything she needs to create her charming plant and ﬂower displays. She is also a gourmet cook and the owner of Amelia River Cooking, where she teaches cooking classes in her large, open kitchen. When she’s not busy gardening and cooking, Debbie is following her mother-in-law’s passion for quilting. “What we wanted the most here was a comfortable, river home,” says Debbie. “Something about our house gives me a feeling I can’t explain, really. It’s just perfect for us. It’s home.”

hen Bonito Grill & Sushi opened in downtown Fernandina Beach 12 years ago, it ushered in a new era for dining out on Amelia. Asian fusion was just coming to northeast Florida, and, while many Amelia Islanders were just learning how to use their chopsticks, Sushi Chef Tony Mai was wowing diners with incredibly beautiful and tasty sushi presentations that made us feel like we were dining in a metropolitan restaurant. Nowadays, there are more Asian and sushi joints in the area, but Bonito’s is still the shining star, and Chef Tony is still the creative mastermind behind their success. Bonito boasts amazingly fresh sushi, a fabulous retro-style bar, a romantic dining area, and a friendly and knowledgeable staff. I recently visited Bonito with my friend, Bruce, for some sushi and dinner. After I heard the suggestions given by manager David Shaeffer, I knew we were in for a treat. We arrived hankering for seafood, and our server bought us a wonderful dish of Striped Bass Sashimi that was topped

with flying fish roe, shallots, and a soy glaze. This dish was so savory and rich, it was almost beefy in nature. Bruce tried one of Bonito’s famous martini creations, an Orange Cosmopolitan, made with Svedka Clementine Vodka, Triple Sec, and a splash of cranberry juice. I had a virgin Lime Daiquiri that was tangy and tart, and very thirst-quenching. We were also treated to a Hot Roll. A sushi creation that features albacore tuna, yellow tail snapper, and jalapenos, it was tempura-fried and drizzled with a sririchaspiced sauce and wasabi mayonnaise. It had a nice bite, and I just loved the hot, crispy coating with the cool sushi inside. With creative rolls like this, as well as their expertly crafted traditional sushi and sashimi, Bonito’s sushi bar is definitely the best of the best. We also shared my favorite appetizer, Japanese Gyoza, seared pork dumplings served with a spicy sesame soy sauce. Tender and juicy, I could eat these little gems every day. We also had a palate-pleasing seasonal salad that was very light – mixed greens with oranges, onion, goat cheese, and a cilantro citrus vinaigrette. For our entrees, Shaeffer paired up a flight of wines for us. I like this way of dining, as we get to sample several small glasses of different wines. We had a Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, very dry and fruity, a Douglas Hill Chardonnay, gentle and creamy in flavor, Albet i Noya, a light Spanish white, and Indaba Merlot from South Africa. Bruce ordered Bouillabaisse, a Japanese version of the classic French dish that is loaded with seafood – Maine lobster, clams, mussels, shrimp and scallops, served with rice noodles in a spicy Japanese-style broth. Wonderful! I ordered the Victoria Perch, a special that night. It is a mild and flaky fresh-water fish, marinated in miso, then encrusted in panko, and served with jasmine rice and fresh asparagus. A lovely beurre blanc is drizzled on the plate. An exceptional dish, I savored every bite. I always order dessert, and, although it was a stretch after this big meal, I decided to try the Green Tea Ice Cream. Not too heavy, it was a sweet ending to our evening at Bonito. The restaurant also has a great lunch menu, featuring a Bento Box that I like quite a lot, and I would also suggest stopping in for some sushi and drinks at their delightful and friendly bar. fell in love with Fort Clinch State Park eight years ago when I first moved to Amelia Island. For me, it was all about the breathtaking views of the Amelia River and the maritime hammocks, with their large, Spanish moss-draped live oak trees. A great place to ride my mountain bike, either on- or off-road, the state park offers something for everyone, including camping, swimming, fishing, birding, and wildlife photography. During the first weekend of each month—Fort Garrison Weekends—the fort comes alive with soldiers who perform living history reenactments of historic fort operations.

I decided to visit the fort to see the soldiers in action on a recent Saturday. Over 100 volunteers contribute to these living history events, which were started in 1974. Fort Clinch was named for General Duncan Lamont Clinch, a prominent ﬁgure of the Second Seminole War, and its construction began in 1847. It was built at the mouth of the St. Marys River to protect the natural deep-water port of Fernandina, which was

the eastern link of Florida’s only cross-state railroad. Never fully completed, the fort nevertheless served as a military post during the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World War II. Over 100 people were in attendance at the Fort Garrison that Saturday, milling about the fort and visiting the jail, the hospital, the quartermaster’s room, and the general store. A group of soldiers from the 3rd Rhode Island Artillery were on hand to fire the 1861 three-inch ordinance rifle (or cannon), which is always a fun spectacle for visitors, especially children. Although no battles were fought at the fort, the soldiers trained regularly. I enjoyed meeting re-enactor Jeri Dod from St. Marys, GA, who runs the Sutler’s store, the civilian-run shop that provided many of the extra items that the soldiers needed, including candy, soap, stationery, stamps, and gifts. Re-enactors Lee Bledsoe, in charge of the hospital, and Frank Ofeldt, sergeant of engineering, are trained historians who believe in the hands-on experience that the living-history weekends provides. “For that short time that visitors spend at Fort Clinch, we take them out of their world,” explains Ofeldt. “Sharing the military experience brings people together during these weekends, and it’s surprising how many people, especially the children, begin to act differently and settle into their roles quickly.” I love the fact that the soldiers stayed in character during my visit that day. Even when I was taking some photos with my tiny digital camera, re-enactor Marc Pica questioned, “That doesn’t look like a camera to me! Cameras got four legs, they’re big and square!” Besides Fort Clinch’s Fort Garrison Weekends, the state park also holds candlelight tours of the fort every Friday and Saturday night, from May 11 through Labor Day weekend. A Commemoration of the Spanish-American War is held on September 15 and 16, and History of the American Soldier is an all-day program featuring an interactive living timeline of each major military conflict in U.S. history, held on November 10th.
