One of the largest events in the entire Southeast, the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival returns to Amelia Island each spring, always on the first weekend of May. With crowds exceeding 100,000 visitors, the Shrimp Festival is a high point on the Amelia Island calendar and a great event for the entire community. It is a source of local pride that Fernandina Beach is the birthplace of the modern shrimp industry, and while the shrimp boat fleet is smaller today, the venerable shrimp is a local favorite. If you are a visitor to Amelia Island and you’ve never experienced Shrimp Festival, mark your calendar for next year. The festival is a fun-filled weekend for the whole family. It traditionally kicks off with the Pirate Parade on Thursday evening, continues with Friday’s Downtown Merchants’ Sidewalk Sale, and rolls that evening into live entertainment and delicious food – including a variety of shrimp dishes – the annual Pirate Invasion, and a fireworks display over the harbor. Saturday and Sunday bring the festival’s highly-regarded fine arts and crafts show, more food and entertainment, and all sorts of fun contests. As we note each year, much of the food at the festival is sold by local churches and service organizations, which use the food booths each year to raise much-needed funds to support their efforts. Sunday brings the traditional blessing of the fleet, which is actually how the festival got started over fifty years ago. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers who make the Shrimp Festival such a great event each year. We at the Islander celebrate shrimp each year in May with our Shrimp Festival recipe issue, in which we share some mouth-watering shrimp recipes from our favorite local restaurants. We are grateful, along with our readers, that our talented local chefs are happy to share with us their boundless creativity on the subject of shrimp. And we are amazed each year to discover so many new and fabulous ways to serve shrimp! Of course, when you’re not in the mood to cook, you can always find these and many other delicious dishes at these outstanding Amelia Island restaurants. Also this month, Julie Simmons introduces us to some members of the Fernandina Beach High School Class of 2016, an accomplished group of young men and women who take a strong sense of community out into the world; we look at the history of real-life pirates, long associated with the festivities of Shrimp Festival, on Amelia Island; we present another one of the “Great Homes of Fernandina” from Dickie Anderson; enjoy a “Backyard Adventure” to nearby St. Marys, Georgia and Cumberland Island; and so much more.

BAPTIST MEDICAL CENTER NASSAU EARNS RECOGNITION
2016 ST. MICHAEL ACADEMY GOLF CLASSIC HONORS TRINITY HOBLIT This year’s 12th annual St. Michael Academy Golf Classic is a tribute to Trinity Hoblit, a St. Michel’s student who passed away last year at the age of 14. Trinity was an advocate of organ donation. With her family’s support, Trinity gave life to three recipients after her death. “Trinity was part of the SMA family for four short years and she left an indelible mark,” says Principal Jackie Stewart. “Her smile, kindness, and love of life are things she passed on to all who knew her.” “Trinity had the best heart and loved everybody,” says Olivia Hoblit, Trinity’s mother. “She was always happy every time you saw her. St. Michael Academy was part of her, and she looked forward to going to school each day to see her friends, classmates, teachers, and everyone at school. She was always eager to learn, and she never quit.” The golf tournament will be held May 27 at Long Point Golf Club. Check-in is at 10:30 a.m.; with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. The entry fee is $175 per person, which includes dinner. Dinner only is $60. Limited openings golf remain, and sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information, visit www.smagolf.com.
Baptist Medical Center Nassau has earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) under a national program aimed at informing patients about the respiratory care services available in hospitals. The QRCR program was begun by the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) in 2003 to help consumers identify facilities using qualified respiratory therapists. Hospitals earning the QRCR designation ensure patient safety by agreeing to adhere to a strict set of criteria. The AARC’s QRCR program grew out of growing concerns among health care leaders and the general public regarding the safety and quality of health care services provided to patients. Hospitals that meet the QRCR requirements provide a level of respiratory care consistent with national standards and guidelines, demonstrating From left: Diane Moxley, Sara a commitment to quality care. About 700 hospitals Grace, Alisa Carolino, Andrea Bayot (approximately 15 percent of hospitals in the U.S.) have applied for and received this award. “Our respiratory therapists provide important care to our patients each and every day,” says hospital President Stephen Lee. “We are extremely proud of our entire Respiratory Care team, which has worked diligently to uphold quality and safety standards in delivering this specialized care.”

T
he Island Art Association is owned and operated by almost 200 artists. Their “Featured Artist of the Month” is yet another avenue for members to show and sell their work. Each month, an artist is selected to exhibit their work for the entire month, with their opening reception coinciding with the Second Saturday Artrageous Artwalk. May’s featured artist is Lorraine Kilmer, a self-taught artist whose passion for drawing and art began when she first picked up a pencil. A lifelong love of painting began with the encouragement of her high school art teacher, who recognized her budding talent. Lorraine moved to the west coast of Florida as a young mother, where she launched a new career in architectural drafting and design. The beauty of the sand and surf sparked a renewed interest in painting, and she began working again with both oil and acrylics. She then moved to North Carolina, where she spent 30 years immersed in the flora and fauna of the mountains. Lorraine blossomed into an award-winning artist, whose work adorns many private collections.
No longer able to resist the call of the ocean, Lorraine and her husband, Ed, moved back to Florida and now live on beautiful Amelia Island. Painting has become her full-time passion, with wildlife, nature, and the mystical mermaids as her primary artistic focus. To view the vast array of Lorraine’s artwork, visit her web site at ldkpaintings.com. Island Art Association offers a wide range of art opportunities in their Education Center to residents of Amelia Island and visitors alike. This year’s Children Summer Art Camp, to be held July 18 to 22, is an extension of the free children’s art classes held one Saturday a month. Last year, more than 15 artists volunteered to insure that programs for kids were available. In addition, there are drop-in sessions for painters, photographers, and portrait artists. Join IAA and Lorraine Kilmer during Second Saturday Artrageous Artwalk on May 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. for great art, conversation, light appetizers, and beverages. For more information about the gallery and their education classes, call (904) 261-7020 or visit www.islandart.org.

eresa J. “Teri” Sopp has practiced law in Fernandina Beach and Nassau County for nearly 38 years. She started out in 1978 as an attorney for Legal Aid, with an office in the Old Post Office Building. Teri was an Assistant Public Defender in Jacksonville from 1980 to 1990, and often covered cases for the Nassau County Office. In 2004, she moved to Fernandina full-time and opened her Nassau County office. A Florida Bar board-certified criminal trial attorney, Teri handles criminal cases from DUI to first-degree murder. She recently became Of Counsel to the Orlando-based O’Mara Law Group in order to expand her practice throughout Florida. The firm also handles family law, civil rights cases, and mass torts. “Of all the counties in which I practice,” Teri says, “Nassau County is the most enjoyable. It is really much better to practice law in a smaller community.” The Nassau County legal community knows Teri well. uality Health Healthcare and Rehabilitation has been an important part of Amelia Island since 1984, providing comprehensive care to meet the needs of the island’s growing community. By working closely with other island healthcare groups, Quality Health provides as many local services as possible for their 108 residents. A 120-bed facility, one-quarter of Quality’s residents are short-term rehab patients, the majority of whom are discharged to their homes after their rehabilitation. Quality Health Administrator Stephen Jordan has been at the facility for eight years, with 25 years of experience in the medical field. “Our central focus at Quality Health is customer service,” says Jordan. “The patient always comes first, in all of our departments.” But Jordan points out that it’s not just about a patient’s physical needs. “We provide all sorts of social events, from river cruises to concerts, offering our residents a well-rounded living environment. We also have many community volunteers, who provide activities like pet therapy and entertainment.” Quality Health services include physical and occupational, therapy, podiatry, social work, speech and language pathology, X-rays, pharmacy, clinical lab, dietary services, mental health services, housekeeping, and even a beauty shop. Their 24-hour nursing staff is friendly and encouraging, helping patients feel at ease and eager to complete their rehabilitation. Quality Health is located at 1625 Lime Street, close to Baptist Medical Center Nassau. For more information, call (904) 261-0771 or visit their web site at www.qualityhealthamelia.com.

“R
egardless of our differences as people, we always come together when we need to!” shares Danielle Teare, member of the Fernandina Beach High School (FBHS) Class of 2016 and daughter of Cyd and Andy Teare. The feeling of “coming together” is exactly what draws many of us to Amelia Island, and it’s no surprise that this sentiment overflows among this year’s graduating class. “What sets our school and class apart is how close we all are. The sense of community is so strong,” explains Gray Bean, son of Abby and State Senator Aaron Bean. “We’re blessed to live in a beautiful place with a relatively small class size.” Brooks Simmons, daughter of Stacy and Vann Simmons, agrees that growing up on Amelia Island leads to the close friendships that everyone will miss as they venture on to the next stage of their young lives. “This is perhaps my favorite graduating class from my whole career at FBHS,” says guidance counselor Rob Hicks.
“They are a very intelligent group and they really care about their academics!” Nobody can dispute the group’s intelligence and hard work when you hear that Cassidy Mandelbaum is a National Merit Finalist and Ben Snyder earned a perfect score on his SAT in math. Additionally, more students than ever are going to big out-of-state schools like Alabama, Auburn, Arizona, Clemson, North Carolina State, Ole Miss, and the University of Georgia. And they carry big plans with them as they venture out. “As a member of the FBHS Trivia Team, I won MVP three years in a row. I hope to join some sort of brain brawl team at University of Florida, where I will study engineering,” says Gray. Last summer, he was selected to participate in American Legion Boys’ Nation, a prestigious civics program limited to 100 students, which included only two from Florida. This experience sparked a fire in Gray to maybe carry Continued on page 58.

Pirates amelia
island
Celebrated in the island’s annual Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, pirates have a long history on Amelia Island, even ruling Fernandina for a short time. BY KAREN MILLER
A
melia Island loves pirates! We even have a Fernandina Pirate Club, founded in 1973, whose swashbuckling pirates are involved in a variety of activities during the annual Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival. The highlight of the club’s activities is the Thursday night parade that kicks off the festival weekend. Traditionally, the pirate club is the last float in the parade. Excitement grows as the large pirate ship with club members in their pirate best fire booming cannons to finish off the festive parade. The four-day festival offers dress-up opportunities for pirates of all ages, including a Little Pirate contest. Records indicate that Amelia Island was a favorite haunt for some of history’s most notorious pirates. A convenient place to stop because of its deep harbor and unguarded port, some of the baddest of the bad stopped on the island in the early 1800s. The town had more than its share of bars and houses of ill repute. Some of the more well-known pirates who spent time here include Captain Kidd, Jean LaFitte, and the island’s most famous pirate, Luis Aury. Aury was privateer in his early years, and later a full-fledged pirate. What is the difference between a privateer and a pirate? A
privateer (sometimes called a corsair or buccaneer) was a private person or ship authorized by a government through letters of marque (similar to a license or permit) to attack foreign vessels during wartime and take them as prizes. Captured ships were subject to condemnation and sale under prize law, with the proceeds divided between the privateer shipowners and crew. Privateering was a way of mobilizing armed ships and sailors as naval auxiliaries when countries could not afford to expand their own navies. Many countries used privateers, including the United States during the Revolutionary War. Privateers often later became pirates. Aury was born in Paris, France, around 1788. He served in the French Navy as a sailor on a ship stationed in the French colonies of the West Indies. After his time in the navy, he crewed on several different privateer ships. By 1810, he had accumulated enough prize money to become the master of his own vessel. He operated successfully in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean during the early 19th century. Privateers were opportunists, and when Aury had the opportunity, he affiliated with a group of New Orleans ccontinued on page 59.

Villa las Palmas BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTO BY JAN JOHANNES
O
ne of the grander homes in Fernandina Beach’s Historic District, Villa Las Palmas is a 12,000 square foot house that is architecturally eclectic. Included in its design are elements of Art Noveau, Colonial, and Mediterranean Revival. It has massive proportions and a dramatic verandah on three sides. The interior offers spacious rooms, pocket doors, a ballroom, and a basement. A winding stairway goes all the way up to the “widow’s walk.” The front entrance offers many windows, and it has a dramatic palladium window above the door. The house was built on what were once the gardens of the David Yulee home. The Yulee home no longer exists, but an historic marker identifies the location. Villa Las Palmas is one of the island’s many bride houses. Nathanial Borden, a successful lumberman, fell in love with 17 year old Florence “Flossie” Reynard from Brooklyn, New York at the much more senior age of 52. Her family did not approve, so the couple eloped to Cuba. Borden maintained strong ties to Cuba, and it is probable that he stored arms for José Marti, the Cuban poet, political philosopher, and revolutionary hero. Borden’s lumber business exported lumber to ports as distant as Europe and the West Indies.
Borden was the self-proclaimed consul to Cuba and Norway and he built a house worthy of his role. His on-going support and work with Cuba brought him the honorary title of Colonel. He was quite the natty dresser and he wore his official badges with pride. The couple loved to entertain and their new home included a ballroom with a Waterford chandelier. They were quite the dashing couple. He called her Flossie, and she called him “Honey.” Borden was a councilman, mayor of Fernandina, and an active member of the Board of Trade. There are many stories about Miss Flossie. One details her outing in her automobile in which she managed to hit the only other car on the island, which was driven by Dr. Waas. She outlived her husband by many years. At her death, she wanted to be buried in a favorite grandfather clock. Unfortunately, at the time of her death, her expanded size did not allow her wish to be granted. The clock remains in the Hirth House on North Sixth Street. The house was purchased in 1944 for $12,000 by Harry Sahlman, a wealthy shrimp boat owner, and he is credited with developing the lovely grounds.

Sandhill milkweed
winged wonders With plants like Orange Plume, Firecracker Fern, and Milkweed, you’ll lure lots of hummingbirds and Monarch butterflies into your garden. BY BETTY MORRELL
W
e have reached that time of year when we celebrate our wonderful Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival. Gardens are adorned with new and colorful plants, and pirate and shrimp decor is all over the island. What a great way to celebrate Fernandina Beach! To add interest and whimsy to your garden this spring, include a few plants that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Spicy Justicia, Hummingbird Plant, Orange Plume Flower, and Firecracker Flower are just a few of the common names for Justica spicigera. Whatever you call it, it is a lovely perennial for our area, and it can withstand temperatures down to 20 degrees when planted in the ground. And hummingbirds adore it. Clusters of one-inch orange tubular blooms appear throughout much of the year, if protected from hard freezes, or it will act as a dieback perennial and return in spring. The Orange Plume flower, as I call it, is shade and drought tolerant, and it’s a favorite of hummingbirds, so how can you go wrong? It flowers in sun or

shade, though plants may be healthiest and most floriferous when grown with afternoon or midday shade, in welldrained, moderately fertile soil. Orange Plume grows 3 to 4 feet high and 2 to 4 feet wide. It is slightly salt tolerant, but it’s not recommended for oceanside plantings. Once established, it is moderately drought tolerant. The Orange Plume is not to be confused with the Firecracker Fern, which produces loads of one-inch showy red tubular flowers, born in large clusters throughout the warmer months of the year, or nearly year-round. It will flower again in the spring. This durable and long-lived clump-forming perennial requires little additional care once it’s well-established. The Firecracker Fern is heat and sun

tolerant (I have mine in sun/part shade and it thrives), as well as moderately drought resistant once established. You can plant Firecracker Fern behind a rock, where it can hang over it, or put it in a large hanging basket. Mine surrounds a pelican water fountain as a background. Hummingbirds also love this very versatile plant. It is Monarch butterfly season right now, and their host plants are dill and the Milkweed plant. Milkweed is one of the only food sources for Monarch caterpillars, and butterflies will breed where Milkweed is found. This plant is a must-have for a butterfly garden. Monarch butterflies deposit their eggs on its leaves, and once the caterpillars emerge, they eat the leaves. Milkweed plants need no fertilizer, as they tolerate poor soil. Your biggest challenge will be containing them, as they spread via seeds and rhizomes. At the very least, you may want to remove the seed pods before they open. If you have any questions, you can email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

ot many can say that their home found them, but Hal London can. “A realtor contacted me about a short sale on a foreclosure and asked if I was interested,” Hal remembers. “I wasn’t, but curious, I took a look at the Lohman House, built in 1880.” At the time, Hal couldn’t exactly pinpoint why, but he sought out the home and made the winning bid at a public auction on the courthouse steps in 2013. The home was originally built at the corner of South 6th and Centre Streets (where Eight Flags Antique Market is today) for J. Fred Lohman, a German immigrant who had settled in Fernandina Beach with his siblings, wife, and handicapped son, who are buried at St. Peter’s Episcopal Cemetery. location on South 6th Street to make way for Setzer’s Supermarket. Hal is the fifth owner, and perhaps the home has found its destined inhabitant. “On the afternoon of my first day of ownership, I explored the house for the first time, opening every cabinet and drawer,” says Hal. “On the back of a broom closet door, I found interesting engravings that included the numbers ‘28’ and ‘1959,’ and the word, ‘HAL.’ This sent shivers down my spine. I was born on December 28, 1959, and my name is Hal!” A feeling of peace came over Hal with this discovery, he says. It seemed to him he was meant to own this home. Hal has lived on Amelia Island for over a decade. He discovered the island when he was stationed near Macon, Georgia, as an US Air Force military doctor. Originally from Philadelphia, he visited on a weekend getaway and had to return. A board-certified doctor in emergency medicine who specializes in aesthetic medicine, Hal has served as medical director for several emergency departments in Florida and Georgia. But, as one can see from his home, Hal’s true passion is creativity and versatility in the arts and medicine, which led him to 54 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • MAY 2016

open London Medical Spa in 2013, where he offers physicianonly cosmetic medical treatments. The Lohman House was due for a makeover when he bought it, and Hal transformed the building into a mixed-use space for home and business, just like doctors have historically set up their practices. He spent hours with pencil and paper to turn the old kitchen into two patient rooms with crystal chandeliers, a foyer into waiting area with a separate entrance, a parlor into the primary kitchen, and combining one guest bedroom with the master to create a large walk-in closet, master bath, and even a laundry closet. When the plan was just right, Lendry Homes assisted with construction. “I kept everything as untouched as possible,” confirms Hal, who designed and decorated his home. “There are three original fireplaces, heart pine wooden floors, stained glass windows, and
even the original claw-foot tub in the guest bath.” He decorated in antiques collected locally and at a Philadelphia auction, giving the home an authentic period feel. An artist at heart, Hal is also a popular free-lance local drummer as well, nicknamed “Roc-Doc!” That helps explain the whimsical leopard-print carpet on the stairs. “I had leopard-print drums in high school,” laughs Hal. “It just adds an edgy feel to the house, in contrast with the ornateness of the historic space. It makes it home.” All the activity of life in downtown Fernandina Beach is also a bonus for Hal, who loves people, dining out locally, and throwing his hand-drums on his shoulder and heading out to play with other local musicians. “The Lohman House picked me, and it has brought me much happiness and success,” he says.

on a family tradition. “I hope to one day run for office and pursue a career in government or to serve the public,” he confides. Brooks will attend Florida State University, where she plans to study for a career as a pharmacist. In addition to her studies, she’s ready to get involved in campus life. “I hope to continue dancing, as I have for the past fifteen years at Bean School of Dance,” she smiles. “I also hope to join a sorority, and attend as many sporting events as possible!” Danielle is leaving for Auburn University to study pharmaceutical science or equine medicine, with a minor in nutrition. “I’ve competitively ridden horses since age seven, and I hope to continue with Auburn’s Intercollegiate Horse Show Association team.” As this group looks ahead, they are grateful for the many happy times at Fernandina Beach High School. “My most treasured memory was cheering on the varsity team when we beat Yulee my sophomore year!” brags Brooks. Gray will always remember homecoming, when he played Mr. Sapp (now retired) in the senior escapades skit. “Mr. Sapp is one of my favorite teachers ever and also a role model, and it was great to pay tribute to him and have some fun at the same time.” Danielle also wants to thank Mr. Sapp and remembers how he called her “Ms. Grey” because she reminded him of Meredith Grey, star of Grey’s Anatomy. In addition, Danielle is quick to acknowledge that the parents of the Class of 2016 are due a lengthy standing ovation for their unfailing support. She and her classmates understand that their success wouldn’t have been possible without it. “These are just good kids, and they make me really proud of this community,” Rob concludes. “I’m pleased that we were able to produce a product of this caliber, and I hope to entice a few of them back to Fernandina in a few years.” Congratulations, Class of 2016! Our best wishes go with you!

associates who were planning to establish a Mexican rebel port on the Texas coast, part of the Mexican revolt against Spain. Aury was made resident commissioner of Galveston and he raised the Mexican rebel flag. He later resigned that commission and, in 1817, sailed to the Florida coast and Amelia Island, where he joined Gregor McGregor, a notorious soldier of fortune, to attack what was then Spanish Florida in the name of Mexico. After MacGregor left Amelia Island, Aury, now a pirate, sailed with his armada of three ships into the harbor. Three days later, he hoisted the Republic of Mexico flag, the sixth flag in the island’s turbulent history. With full pirate bravado, he declared himself ruler of the island. Fernandina became a pirate haven. Eventually, Aury was run out of Fernandina by a United States naval force. He remained over two months as an unwelcome guest. Where there are pirates, there may be treasure. Hunters of treasure are convinced that there may be buried treasure or even a sunken Spanish ship off the coast of Amelia Island. After all, Fernandina’s harbor was a very busy port, with evidence suggesting that as many as 300 ships were anchored here at one time at its peak. Some wonder if pirates or privateers left treasure buried for safekeeping. Some suspect that before Aury left, he buried a treasure on the island said to be worth as much as $60,000.

Sandy Bottoms BEACH BAR & GRILL With tables on the sand and great views from its oceanfront deck, Sandy Bottoms delivers great appetizers, specialty cocktails, and delicious seafood. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

hen you live on Amelia Island, you can take a “staycation” any time you want. I recently invited my sister Laura to join me for a special girls’ weekend in a suite at Seaside Amelia Inn. The hotel is located right next to Sandy Bottoms Beach Bar & Grill, where you can enjoy oceanfront dining with your toes literally right in the sand. It also has a large covered patio on the beach, as well as the Ocean Oasis Beach Bar, with its unobstructed view of the ocean. It was our first stop after we checked into our hotel. Chef Nick Hartley suggested some of the restaurant’s signature dishes for us to try, and servers Ashley and Jessie were eager to take care of us. They suggested we start with a cocktail,
and we were happy to oblige! Sandy Bottoms’ mixologists are always coming up with new drink combinations, so Laura and I asked them to surprise us with one of their specialty drinks. We were presented with Orange Lime Mojitos, a thirst-quenching beverage loaded with fresh lime juice, oranges, mint, and rum. What a treat!
Our appetizers consisted of Caribbean Nachos and Tuscan Calamari, two of Sandy Bottoms’ most popular offerings. The signature tri-colored tortilla chips are piled high with melted mozzarella, Peruvian pulled pork, black bean mango salsa, jalapenos, scallions, and spicy Bam Bam Sauce. The sauce is a spicy chili sauce mixed with mayonnaise, and it’s the perfect addition to the other ingredients. The Tuscan Calamari was like no other calamari dish I’ve ever had. Chef Nick told me they cut the fresh squid there at the restaurant, and then hand bread it before deep frying. They were golden brown, incredibly tender, and drizzled with sun-dried tomato garlic oil. There was also a lovely, fresh micro-greens salad on the plate, which was such a nice addition to this appetizer. We also shared a Florida Citrus Salad that was brimming with lettuce, spinach, tropical fruit, tomatoes, onions, and cukes, drizzled with homemade citrus vinaigrette. For our entrees, we feasted on Key West Shrimp and Lobster and Caribbean Fusion Tuna. Both dishes were superb! The Key West Shrimp and Lobster features tender seafood with onions and bell peppers sautéed and glazed with their special lime juice/hot sauce mixture, served over a bed of citrus-spiked rice and scallions. What I loved about this dish was the care taken with the rice, in addition to the perfectly cooked shrimp and lobster. The rice was so delicious I could have eaten that on its own, and I love it when a chef pays extra attention to the starch and vegetables on the plate. The tuna was also very well-prepared, seared to medium rare and topped with a homemade tropical fruit salsa, then drizzled with a ginger reduction and a bit more Bam Bam Sauce. I didn’t think we’d have room for dessert, but we could hardly resist a slice of Reese’s Peanut Butter and Chocolate Pie served with whipped cream and chocolate syrup. What a wonderful ending to a perfect meal, served right at the beach! Sandy Bottoms is open 7 days a week and features live entertainment every night. backyard adventure Dungeness on Cumberland Island
across the river STORY AND PHOTOS BY KAREN MILLER
J
ust a stone’s throw from the bustling coastal town of Fernandina Beach beckons the charming town of St. Marys, Georgia. I recently took a weekend trip to historic St. Marys, once home to pirates, smugglers, and a robust shipping industry, to learn a little more about this quaint village community. St. Marys developed its current tourist economy in the 1970s. Calling itself “The Gateway to Cumberland Island,” the town is the departure point for the ferry to Cumberland Island National Seashore. My plan was to explore St. Marys on Saturday, then visit Cumberland Island on Sunday. It’s a busy weekend, but St. Marys is only a 40-minute drive from Fernandina Beach. My first stop was Emma’s Cottage House, a bed & breakfast inn located in the heart of downtown. It was on this property that Sam Bealey, a superintendent for Dungeness on Cumberland Island, brought his bride, Miss Emma, to live in 1911. After I settled into my pretty room, I toured the grounds, full of Southern favorites like magnolias, gardenias, jasmine, azaleas, hydrangeas, and camellias, then set out for the waterfront, only two blocks away. Recently restored, the waterfront is a beautiful place to walk, or just sit and pass the time. It has a lovely fountain, porch swings, an amphitheater, and a Community Market on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Adjacent to the park is the St. Marys Submarine Museum, the largest of its kind in the South, and the fifth largest in the country, featuring pictures, paintings, artifacts, historical documents, and files on nearly every submarine the United States has had in service. With a working periscope and a video on how a submarine works, it’s a great place to bring the kids, too.
Afterwards, I toured the Cumberland Island Visitor Center, which tells the tale of the Carnegie family, and features a special War of 1812 exhibit. A short walk brought me to Orange Hall, now a museum and a beacon for history buffs who appreciate the grand beauty of the Antebellum South. A short walk later I was at Oak Grove Cemetery, one of the oldest burial grounds on the Georgia coast. St. Marys is also home to the Georgia Radio Museum & Hall of Fame, the St. Marys Railroad Museum, and four beautiful churches of historic significance, all within walking distance of the downtown. On Sunday, I got on board the Cumberland Queen II, a ferry that shuttles visitors to Cumberland Island National Seashore. The island features beaches, dunes, marshes, and wildlife, including the famed wild horses. It also preserves and interprets many historic sites and structures, including the ruins of Dungeness and the Plum Orchard mansion. The Dungeness district contains the ruins of the Carnegie mansion, the Tabby House dating to the Early Republic, and a cemetery. The Plum Orchard Historic District contains the intact Plum Orchard mansion dating to the 1890s, and a shell midden dating back over 4,000 years. I spent the day exploring the southern end of the island, visiting Dungeness, the Ice House Museum, the shoreline, and numerous hiking trails. After taking the last ferry back to St. Marys, I was back in Fernandina for dinner. Now that’s my idea of a perfect weekend adventure! For more information about St. Marys and Cumberland Island, visit www.visitstmarys.com.
