When we moved to Amelia Island, we were often given advice on what we absolutely had to do now that we were living here, the quintessential Amelia Island things to do: ride bikes through Fort Clinch State Park, take a boat ride on the Amelia River with Amelia River Cruises, and enjoy the wonderful local theater available here, which we heard about frequently. For a small island, we were surprised to discover the variety and professionalism of the local theater community. This year, Amelia Community Theatre (ACT) proudly celebrates its 35th anniversary, and we are happy to honor its acclaimed history in our cover story this month. Amelia Island must have been fertile ground for the dramatic arts. When ACT was started in 1981 by Ellen and Ed Green, who had moved from Columbus, Ohio, community theatre here hit the ground running and never looked back. ACT’s first production, Butterflies Are Free, was staged at the Woman’s Club of Fernandina Beach. Tickets sold out quickly, the production received lots of favorable press, and local businesses not only bought ads in ACT’s programs but they lent them whatever they needed to stage the production. That sort of coming together as a community to bring art to life is the essence of community theatre, and Amelia Community Theatre has embodied that spirit through the years. In 1988, ACT purchased a building on Cedar Street, and they opened the Studio Theatre in 1991. In 2005, they launched a capital campaign to add the Main Stage, which seats 170. The Main Stage has allowed ACT to produce more challenging and extravagant shows, which has grown their audience even more. Our own Bill Raser has been involved as an actor for years with ACT, and our late colleague, Ed Swartwood was involved behind the scenes. Today, our Art Director Tom Barrett continues the Islander’s connection with ACT through the acting of his son, Nathan, who has appeared in a number of productions. In addition, ACT has hosted Christmas concerts with Deana’s cousin Frank Basile and Crescendo Amelia, and numerous other great events, underlining ACT’s position as an integral part of the Amelia Island community. To current Managing Director Linda McClane and everyone who has contributed to ACT’s success over the last 35 years, we can only say, Bravo! Also this month, we preview the new train platform at the old train depot in downtown Fernandina Beach, which completes an extensive renovation there; look at the A.L. Lewis House, the first house built at American Beach when it was established in 1935; present another “Fernandina Faces” profile from Dickie Anderson; enjoy a standup paddle “Backyard Adventure;” and so much more.

hen Ellen Green Ensley and her husband, Ed Green, moved to Amelia Island from Columbus, Ohio, they were surprised that there was no theater in town. The couple soon began talking to their friends and neighbors about whether the community would support a local theater, and they were met with a sustained round of applause. Not only did they find 81 people ready to give $10 each toward their first production, they also had support from the City of Fernandina
Beach and a number of local businesses, which purchased ads in their program. Amelia Community Theatre (ACT) presented their first performance in May 1981 with the play Butterflies are Free, written by Leonard Gershe. Loosely based on the life of attorney Harold Krents, the plot revolves around a Manhattan blind man, whose controlling mother disapproves of his relationship with a free-spirited hippie. Ellen directed that first production. ACT hosted the play at the Woman’s Club of Fernandina

Beach as a dinner theater performance, with club members catering the meal. The play was an immediate hit. Tickets sold out very quickly, and ACT became the island’s newest topic of conversation. Linda McClane, one of ACT’s charter members and the current managing director, remembers that successful play quite well. “Everyone was talking about Amelia Community Theatre,” says Linda. “We received lots of press in the local paper, and the audience loved the play. That was a pinnacle moment for us. Everything moved forward quickly from there.” Linda remembers fondly the strong support ACT received from the community. “Not only did local businesses buy ads in our programs, they also lent us things we needed for our productions, and they loaned us space to store our equipment. But it was tough at first, not having our own building.” By the mid 1980s, ACT was able to rent a storefront on North 3rd
Street, where they could keep their equipment, hold rehearsals, and have meetings. “We held our performances at the middle school, which then was actually the high school,” recalls Linda. “But it was still a struggle to coordinate our schedule with the school, and we still had to haul all of our equipment over there.” In 1988, ACT purchased the Nassau County School Board building on Cedar Street and renovated it. That building became the Studio Theatre. By 1991, ACT was hosting performances in their own space. “The building was small, so we held more performances,” said Linda. “That was an exciting time for us, having our own theater. It allowed our volunteers to work their own hours, and there was a huge pride of ownership in our group. The small space actually made us more creative, and we put on some amazing shows!” Dracula was the first play ACT produced at their Studio Theatre. set changes. They even had dressing rooms for their actors. “Other memorable plays included Rumors by Neil Simon. It was a two-story set, and it was elegant and beautiful,” says Linda. “In another play, The Foreigner, we had special effects, including a trap door. It was very convincing!” Inasmuch as the Studio Theatre was flourishing, members of ACT knew that they would need a bigger building. In 2005, they began a capital campaign to raise money to build a theater to their liking that would hold a large audience and allow them to put on more extravagant performances. When the construction phase was finished in 2010, ACT opened its new theater with The Pirates of Penzance, a comic operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan. “This play had a ‘wow’ factor,” recalls Linda. “We built a huge pirate ship! Everyone loved it.” The new Main Stage theater seats 170, and the larger space has allowed ACT to create two-story sets and include larger objects. It’s more than double the size of the Studio Theatre,
which seats 80. In a recent musical, Mary Poppins, ACT was able to hire a professional flying company to provide special harnesses and train the actors how to use them properly. This was only made possible because of the size of the Main Stage, along with a grant to cover the cost. In celebration of its 35th year, Amelia Community Theatre hosted two events during the month of May. The first was a special open house with games, prizes, theater trivia, entertainment, plus cake and ice cream. The second event was a concert called “Encore: 35 Years of Musical Memories,” which held on May 20. Directed by Kristin Sakamoto, the ACT Song Connection singers delighted theater-goers with a fun evening of favorite songs from ACT musicals during the past 35 seasons. ACT is also holding a fundraising campaign called “35 for 35,” encouraging people to donate $35 to support the theatre. The money raised will be used to update the lighting and sound equipment for both spaces.

Besides their well-known performances, ACT offers numerous activities and programs that are open to the public. Song Connection is a group of people who love to sing, directed by Kristin Sakamoto. They meet on Sunday nights for songs and friendship. ACTeen, hosted by Toni D’Amico, provides theater-loving teens with an outlet for their creativity. ACTeen meets and rehearses Sunday afternoons from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., and there is no cost to attend. On August 26, ACTeen will be holding an event called “Lock In,” an overnight theater experience with various workshops all evening, along with a pizza party. Lock In begins at 7:30 p.m. and pick-up time is August 27 at 7 a.m. In addition, on August 28, auditions will be held for ACTeen at 2 p.m. Toni D’Amico has been involved in theater since she was 15 years old. She started ACTeen when she saw a need for high school students to express themselves through the performing arts. “There are many students who are not interested in activities
like sports,” says Toni. “When I work with the students, I see my passion for theater through their eyes. They are eager to learn, and the theater teaches them all sorts of things, like responsibility, self confidence, and communication skills. “We offer so many learning opportunities for them. We’ve done a musical, and an anti-bullying film that the teens wrote, directed, and produced themselves. We also performed a special play this year called Love, Death, and The Prom, which dealt with real teen issues. ACT’s mission statement is about theater education for all ages, and that’s what we provide at ACTeen.” ACT also offers theater summer camps for children. A oneweek camp for children between 7 and 12 years of age provides instruction in theater basics, with a performance for family and friends at the end of the week. A two-week camp for children between 8 and 12 years of age, and teens between 13 and 17, offers instruction in acting, singing, and movement. THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH (2011)

Since 1981, twelve of ACT’s 81 charter members still remain. “We are so fortunate to have these long-term volunteers,” says Linda. “What makes volunteering at ACT so special is that it gives people the opportunity to try new things. A person might be an actor in one play, then a crew member in another. We encourage everyone to take part in all aspects of theater.” Peggy and Charles Horton are charter members of ACT who have done anything and everything needed to make the theatre a success. When they moved to Fernandina Beach in the late 1970s, they became friends with Ellen and Ed Green, and others who wanted to start up a theater. “In those days before we had our own theater, we performed wherever we could,” remembers Charles. “The high school, various church halls, other locations. It was hard work!” Charles has worked as an actor, set builder, director, usher, and nearly any task needed at ACT. He and Peggy even performed together in The Good Doctor, along with their son.
Peggy may have played some roles in ACT performances, but prefers to work behind the scenes. Currently, she is the volunteer office manager. She also works as an usher when needed, and is very active in the ACT Guild, which she founded in 2013. “I am so happy to see how ACT has grown and evolved over the years,” says Peggy. “There is so much talent in our group, and our members take pride in everything they do.” Incoming President Marylee Long joined ACT in 1984, when she brought her daughter to the theatre for an audition. “Mary Hurt was the artistic and managing director at the time,” says Marylee. “She gave my daughter a small part in Annie Get Your Gun, and we were hooked. I had been a drama major, and I know how important it is to encourage everyone to be a part of the performance. What I love at ACT is that everyone steps up to the plate, no matter what has to be done. And just when we’re finished with a play, we’re all ready for the next one!” Marylee has served on many committees and in a variety of functions, including directing, and her husband builds sets.

THE ACT GUILD The ACT Guild was formed to aid, promote, and supplement all activities of the Amelia Community Theatre. The Guild members love theater and are dedicated to supporting exceptional theater in Fernandina Beach. Their volunteer activities include ushering, hosting opening night parties, serving refreshments, publicity and promotions, cataloging and organizing, fundraising events, and mailing. ACT’s theaterloving members have presented many popular and memorable events to raise funds for the theatre, including The Dinner of Dinners, Ladies’ Night Out, Pancake Breakfasts, An Evening of Christmas Entertainment, The Belle of Amherst with Sinda Nichols, The Festival of Trees, and Breakfast With Santa. ACT encourages local residents to join the Guild, and
welcomes all levels of participation. Annual dues are $10. ACT also has three types of theatre memberships, including Season Ticket Member, Program Advertising Member, and Donor Member. Memberships are renewable each year, with the membership year running concurrently with ACT’s season dates. They begin processing memberships on June 1; memberships expire on August 31 of the following year. All three types of theatre members have voting privileges at ACT’s Annual Meeting each July. “As a donor, you support our programs and projects in the community,” said Linda. “It’s an invaluable role that positively affects so many.” For more information about being a member, to donate, purchase tickets, or check out upcoming shows, visit www.ameliacommunitytheatre.org or call (904) 261-6749.

HOUSTON PERSON AND BRIA SKONBERG HEADLINE 2016 AMELIA ISLAND JAZZ FESTIVAL
RENDEZVOUS FILM FESTIVAL CELEBRATES NINTH YEAR The Rendezvous Film Festival, cofounded by Tony McAdoo and Cathy Shultz in September 2007 as the Amelia Island Film Festival, held their first screening at The Palace Saloon. Although many changes have occurred since that day, the RFF has stayed focused on its mission statement, which is to inspire and promote independent filmmakers around the world. Today, the Rendezvous Film Festival is a three-day international and domestic film festival celebrating its ninth season on Amelia Island. This year’s event will feature 54 films from 14 countries, along with workshops for film makers and aspiring film makers, such as Eight Steps to a Powerful Pitch and Film Financing Forum, as well as the opportunity for film makers to pitch their film projects to producers. Other events include a film and lunch series, several after-parties, and a closing award event, all held in various venues around the island. This year, RFF has been selected for the U.S. debut of the Australian animation film Blinky Bill the Movie, which stars Ryan Kwanten, Toni Collette, and David Wenham. The festival will be held June 2 through June 4. For more information and a complete schedule, visit www.rendezvousfestival.org.
Legendary tenor saxophonist Houston Person and trumpeter Bria Skonberg are set to headline the 2016 Amelia Island Jazz Festival, it was announced this week by AIJF Artistic Director Les DeMerle. A highly influential player with dozens of albums to his credit, Person has recorded for a number of labels, including Savoy, Mercury, Prestige Muse, and currently, High Note Records. His soulful, bluesy, and thick-toned tenor style, in the tradition of the great Gene Ammons, has been particularly notable in his work with various jazz organ trios. A trumpeter, vocalist, and composer, Skonberg has rapidly become a top draw in New York City. Both will appear in shows at the St. Michael Academy hall on October 7 and 8. Now in its 13th year, the AIJF will take place at various locations in Fernandina Beach from October 2 through 9. It kicks off with its annual free concert in Amelia Park on Sunday, October 2. Additional shows will feature numerous performers, including the Dynamic Les DeMerle band featuring vocalist Bonnie Eisele. Times and venues for all shows will be announced soon. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.ameliaislandjazzfetsival.com.
8 FLAGS PLAYSCAPES BREAKS GROUND AT EGANS CREEK Community leaders, supporters, and business owners gathered at Egans Creek Park recently to break ground on a historic redevelopment of the area. Benjamin Morrison of Cotner Associates, Inc. Architects created the final design for the park. Parker Contracting will act as the general contractor for the redevelopment, as well as provide a large amount of the labor necessary to construct the new restroom facilities and public pavilions. RPM Lumber, Coastal Current Electric, Bill Ross Plumbing, Myers Tractor Service, Coastal Landscapes, Nitelites, Burt Wright Construction, and Manzie and Drake Land Surveyors are also contributing materials and labor. pen since the fall of 2008, the Plantation Artists’ Guild and Gallery works to support and encourage its artist members to sell their art and interact with fellow artists and the public. Located at Amelia Island Plantation, the gallery has gone through some changes since they first opened. When the Omni Resort came to Amelia Island Plantation, they offered the artists free space at The Spa and Shops in exchange for a small commission on their art. As a result, the artists have been able to put their money back into the gallery, helping it to grow and expand. The Plantation Artists’ Guild now features over 35 artists, most of them residents of Amelia Island Plantation. It is a cooperative gallery run by the artists themselves, and visitors to the gallery are encouraged to meet and deal directly with the creators of the art. They also host visiting and guest artists from all over the country, who show their art and also provide demonstrations and classes to help inspire gallery members. The PAG also partners with Osprey Village, who provides opening receptions for their shows, along with fundraisers for local
charities like Amelia Island Montessori School and the Nassau County Council on Aging. Currently, the PAG is featuring their spring show called “Where on Earth?”, an art show with a twist. Visitors are encouraged to identify the various locations the artists have chosen to paint. The show runs through the end of June. They are also planning numerous demonstrations, field trips, and projects throughout the summer. Located in The Spa and Shops at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort, the gallery overlooks the golf course, providing an opportunity for resort guests and community residents alike to enjoy quiet time while perusing the local art. Whether it is to purchase original artwork, participate in a workshop, attend a demonstration, or view the beautiful collection, visit the Plantation Artists’ Guild and Gallery to see the many works of art that adorn the walls. They are open Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (904) 432-1750 or visit www.artamelia.com.

elli Jordan began riding horses when she was only five years old, and from a very young age she knew that she wanted to be an equestrian. “I tried all sorts of other activities when I was growing up,” says Kelli. “Dance, sports, cheerleading, but nothing stuck. It was all about the horses.” She began attending a riding academy, and then eventually an elite summer riding camp in Tampa. She went on to compete at world championships, winning three of them, and received a full scholarship to William Wood University, the number one equestrian school in the country. Hoping to inspire young people to learn to love horses and the sport of riding like she does, Kelli opened Golden Isles Riding Academy in Brunswick, Georgia in March 2012. The academy includes a competition-size riding ring, a smaller riding ring, round pen, custom 12 by 12 matted stalls, two wash racks, farrier station, large customer lounge with kitchen, two large tack rooms, and miles of trails to ride. While Kelli is proud to be the owner, she considers her students the backbone of her business. “Our customers are my family, the horses are my children, and I am fortunate to be involved in a job that I love,” says Kelli. “Our motto at Golden Isles Riding Academy is, ‘Where riding is fun… friendships are made… and memories last forever.’ That’s what I hope my students gain from their time at the barn. Our future is bright!” For more information, call (912) 506-3325 or visit www.goldenislesridingacademy.com.

A replica of the original platform from 1899, the new train platform at Fernandina Beach’s iconic train depot completes an extensive renovation project. BY KAREN MILLER
f you have been strolling down Centre Street near the marina recently, you may have noticed a construction project going on at the Old Florida Railroad Train Depot. The depot, which serves as the Tourist Development Council (TDC) Welcome Center, was restored and dedicated in 2015. The project was funded by the Amelia Island Fernandina Restoration Foundation, the City of Fernandina Beach, and the Amelia Island TDC. Recently, a passenger platform, a replica of the original Florida Railroad platform of 1899, was added to complete the renovation project. On June 12, 2016, the Renovation Foundation will hold a special dedication ceremony to recognize the local historians, preservation activists, and their supporters who, in 1972, established the foundation to preserve and protect the community’s architectural and archaeological heritage. Several of
the original activists are expected to attend the dedication. “This ceremony is to honor them,” says Adam Kaufman, current president of the Restoration Foundation. “It was because of the perseverance of those concerned citizens back in the 1970s that many of our historic structures have been saved and restored.” The Restoration Foundation was formed in 1970 after the demolition of the Keystone Hotel on the city’s main street. Through its efforts, and with the support of the community, the foundation helped to establish Fernandina Beach’s Historic District, placed a number of historic buildings on the National Register, and fought to save the historic Centre Street Court House. “The foundation was the prime mover in the reconstruction and revitalization efforts of Centre Street in 1977,” says Kaufman. continued on page 47.

a piece of history The A.L. Lewis House was the first house built after American Beach was established by the AfroAmerican Life Insurance Company in 1935. BY KAREN MILLER
A.L. LEWIS PORTTRAIT FORM FLORIDA STATE ARCHIVES, THE MEMORY PROJECT
I
n late January, an American Beach Day Celebration was held at the American Beach Community Center, which included the unveiling of a historic marker commemorating the first house built on American Beach. The house, located at 5466 Gregg Street, was built in 1935, the same year that American Beach was established when the Afro-American Life Insurance Company purchased 33 acres of land there with a 1,000 foot shoreline. The home was built for the president of the company, Abraham Lincoln Lewis, by local African American ship builder, William S. Rivers. Lewis was one of the original founders in 1901 of Jacksonville’s Afro-American Life Insurance Company. He was a man with little formal education who became a world traveler, visionary investor, philanthropist, and Florida’s first African American millionaire. His home was the very first built on American Beach. “His home was completed on August 24, 1935,” says Marsha Phelts, an American Beach resident. “It was paid in full. Mr. Lewis lived in the house for two years, and then his son lived there until 1975.”
The A.L. Lewis House has a rectangular plan with a front-facing gable roof. The exterior of the house is covered with a stucco finish. The term “Masonry Vernacular” applies to buildings that display no formal style of architecture and it is defined as the common masonry or frame construction techniques of self-taught builders. Two years after the house was built, Rivers constructed a second home next door, and Lewis’s son, James Henry Lewis, became the owner of the first house. The original home was purchased in 1986 by Jack James of Jacksonville. The second home was occupied by the Lewis family until it was sold by his widow, Elzona Burney Lewis Nobileo. The home is currently owned by a family from Waycross, Georgia. The African American resort community of American Beach was established in 1935 in defiance of segregation and the prevailing Jim Crow laws of that era. When first mapped out, the streets of American Beach were named for the Afro’s founders and their families. Encompassing 216 acres, American Beach became known as “The Negro Ocean Playground,” a place for “recreation and relaxation without humiliation.” As the numbers of visitors grew, businesses sprang up providing food, lodging and entertainment. Performers who appeared at American Beach during its heyday include Duke Ellington and other popular musicians of the 1940s and ‘50s. In 1964, Hurricane Dora devastated the area, destroying homes and businesses. In the 1970s, one of Lewis’ great granddaughters, MaVynee Betsch, a.k.a., The Beach Lady, lived in the Lewis house and fought to protect the community’s heritage from beachfront development. The American Beach Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, with the Lewis house as a contributing structure. The American Beach Museum preserves the memories and memorabilia of several generations of African American residents and visitors to American Beach. The museum pays tribute to A. L. Lewis, the American Beach community, and MaVynee’s legacy. For more information about the American Beach Museum and the historic Lewis house, visit www. americanbeachmuseum.org. The museum is located at 1600 Julia Street. They are open Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays 1 to 5 p.m.

Arlene Filkoff BY DICKIE ANDERSON PHOTO BY STEVE LEIMBERG, UNSEENIMAGES.COM
A
rlene Filkoff is a creative energy on Amelia Island. From community theatre to mayor of Fernandina Beach, she has shared her many talents in a variety of ways. She is a southern girl at heart. Raised in Pass Christian, Mississippi, she has memories of working in her father’s grocery, the only one in town. She graduated from the University of Alabama, earning a B.A. in English and her Secondary Teaching certificate. She taught school for three years before starting her family, which includes her two daughters, Jennifer and Stephanie. Her grandchildren are in Colorado – which she considers too far away – but she is quick to add with her characteristic humor, “They love me unconditionally.” She has also enjoyed a successful career in corporate America. She spent twenty-five years with a number of big companies working on projects involving analysis, vision definition, and the establishment of strategies that would insure success. The Filkoffs bought their home on Amelia Island in the late 1990s, but they did not become full-time residents until 2004. Once on the island, she used her professional skills and work experience to benefit various local non-profit organizations. She was able to help them develop critical strategic plans, then monitor those plans to make course adjustments where necessary. Her board commitments have included Fernandina Little Theatre, Friends of the Library, and Take Stock in Children Nassau County. Arlene stepped up to the challenge and successfully ran for City Commission in 2010, serving until December 2013. As a commissioner, she was voted mayor of Fernandina Beach from November 2011 until November 2012. Sharing her various political experiences, she won top prize in the Fernandina Beach Friends of the Library’s first annual Storytelling Jam with her story, “What I Learned as a City Commissioner.” Arlene’s husband, Steve, is equally involved in the community. Working closely with Fernandina Beach Chief of Police Jim Hurley and others, he helped found the Police Auxiliary, and he
is a familiar sight at almost any of Amelia Island’s many public events. At age 59, he started at the Police Academy, the oldest by far in his class, and he now serves as a reserve officer for the City of Fernandina Beach, as well as heading the Police Auxiliary and the newly formed Police Foundation. Many islanders have been entertained by Arlene on stage. Her roles have included Lily in Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks, Julia in Lend Me A Tenor, Domina in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way To The Forum. She was also a member of the ensemble in the Vagina Monologues, among many other appearances. She has done directing duty, too. As director of Spamalot, an irreverent take on the legend of King Arthur, she coordinated a cast of show girls, cows, and killer rabbits. She enthuses about performing opportunities on Amelia Island. “Amelia Island is a perfect place for folks interested in being involved in the performing arts. With Amelia Community Theatre and the newer Amelia Musical Playhouse, there are lots of opportunities for actors, singers, and musicians to strut their stuff.” Whether patrolling the streets of Fernandina or performing on stage, Arlene and Steve Fikoff are valuable and valued members of the community.

All Aboard from page 33. Attorney Buddy Jacobs formed the Restoration Foundation, whose original members included Bob and Mary Agnes White, Suzanne Hardee, Helen Litrico, Eldridge Partin, and Aubrey Wiliams. Downtown merchants also formed an initial planning committee. The foundation then enlisted the help of the Fernandina Beach Chamber of Commerce, then headed by Beano Roberts. Jacob’s law firm wrote the applications for the grants to pay for the restoration, Roberts administered them, and both worked with the merchants to sell the concept of restoring downtown Fernandina Beach to its Victorian-era glory. Today, the Restoration Foundation continues to “encourage, solicit, receive and administer gifts and bequests of funds for scientific, educational, and charitable purposes, all for the advancement of the restoration of the Amelia Island, Fernandina area of Florida,” as per their mission statement. The Old Florida Railroad Train Depot and platform renovation was designed by architect Benjamin Morrison of Cotner Associates, and Buchanan Builders completed the work on both structures. Architect Joe Miranda. the project manager, serves on the board of directors of the Restoration Foundation. “The platform is a smaller version of the original,” states Miranda. “The dimensions are 60 by 20, and it runs alongside the depot. The detailing is taken from photos of the original platform. We’re very excited about the project. We’re hoping that the platform will be used as a venue for things like concerts and other events. It’s a nice place where people can sit and rest, and get out of the sun.” The Old Florida Railroad Train Depot has been an icon on Fernandina Beach’s waterfront for more than 115 years, and its restoration, along with the new platform, is designed to better serve visitors to the island. The Welcome Center now integrates new technology through interactive kiosks where visitors can find out about area restaurants, activities, lodging, and weather forecasts.

papaya popsicles Varieties of Red Hot Pokers, the dwarf Papaya Popsicle and the Mango Popsicle, sometimes called Torch Lilies, will light up your landscape with vibrant color. BY BETTY MORRELL
J
une is such a pretty month of the year, with all of the colorful flowers blooming in our gardens. Perennials are a blessing because they just show up and bloom, year after year. Right now, I am having a love affair with the Kniphofia, Sages, and Hyssops. These perennials are lovely and dependable. Beginning with the Kniphofia, or “Papaya Popsicle” Red Hot Poker (also known as Torch Lily and Tritoma), its shape is reminiscent of the kind of frozen treats designed to look like a rocket ship or fireworks. The blossoms of this plant are bright orange, red, and gold. Tidy clumps of grassy, green foliage surround the Papaya Popsicle’s flower’s spikes. It is a full-sun perennial that likes regular watering, but it is droughtresistant. It has a long blooming time and keeps bees, hummingbirds and butterflies busy. The Papaya Popsicle Red Hot Poker is a dwarf variety. Aside from being a friend to wildlife, the easy-to-grow Hot Poker is cold-tolerant and works well in Salvia gardens because of its minimal need for both water and fertilizer. Sometimes
TIP O F T HE M O N T H To make sure your plants and grass are getting enough water, place a few cat food or tuna cans around. When the water reaches 1 inch, your plants and grass have sufficient water.
Kniphofias are referred to as Torch Lilies due to their shape as well as their fiery look, which helps light up the landscape, especially when mixed with hot-colored Salvias. The dwarf Papaya Popsicle grows to 20 inches in height and 18 inches in width. It is a plant that requires little care. Just let it go, and I know you’ll love it! The Mango Popsicle is a taller variety of the same plant. It grows to 30 inches in height, and spreads about 18 inches in width. This one is a compact grower, free-blooming, and amazingly hardy. Heat and drought tolerant, it grows in full sun, with mango-colored spikes of many blooms. It is a very pretty plant. You might want to add a Lyrical
49 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • JUNE 2016
Silvertone (Salvia nemorosa), also known as Meadow Sage, to a garden with the above plants. The European Meadow Sages are known for their intense color. However, the Lyrical Silvertone is exceptional for its violet-blue, two-tone flowers, supported by dark calyxes. Lyrical Silvertone Meadow Sage loves moisture, but it does well with average watering in dry weather. It tolerates heat and cold and is adaptable from full sun to partial shade. It thrives in various soils, but needs good drainage. This fragrant perennial will double in height when in bloom. It starts out at 12 inches and grows to 24 inches in height and spreads to 24 inches in width. It is long-blooming and it has a pleasingly vertical form, so if you have an area where grass won’t grow, it would make a nice groundcover. Container planting is another good idea. Meadow Sage also attracts butterflies and honeybees. If you have any questions, you can email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

hen Emily and Tom Roberts decided to build a beach house, they wanted to find a place with great beaches, lots of activities, and small-city appeal. The couple resides in Dallas, Texas, and they were eager to build a home for their family to enjoy. They considered several locations, but finally settled on Amelia Island, since Tom’s parents had retired here 12 years ago. The area has a special appeal for the couple, as they were married in a small family wedding on Cumberland Island in 2014. The family comes to visit in the summer, every holiday, and virtually any day they can manage it.
Emily, a retired interior architect, brought her considerable professional talent to the home’s interior design. She had done several residential projects, including their home in Dallas, but mostly commercial work, including the Pin Point Heritage Museum in Savannah. The museum is located in the old A.S. Varn and Son Oyster and Crab Factory, and it celebrates the Gullah/Geechee culture. Her work on the museum inspired some of the detailing in the house on Amelia Island. Once Emily and Tom decided on Amelia Island, they worked with architect John Cotner of Cotner and Associates and John Gorham, principal of Gorham Custom Homes.

Above right: The lower level is cleverly designed for fun, with bunk beds and a couch made from twin bed mattresses that is accented with brightly colored pillows.
They wanted the beach house to be above all a family place, welcoming and filled with opportunities for great fun. A true beach house where the outside is as important as the inside. With 129 feet of beach frontage, there was ample space to build a wood-shingled home similar to the design of homes in Nantucket, a prior favorite vacation spot. The interior has clean lines, with white walls and wide-plank white oak with grey wash floors throughout. Every detail is designed for comfort and fun, with walls of glass to take advantage of the stunning ocean views. The upholstered furniture is covered in outdoor fabric. Bathing suits are welcome inside or outside. The southern side of the property has a pool, a putting green, and a flag pole proudly raising both American and Texas flags. Extensive landscaping surrounds the home. Emily designed virtually all of the house’s furniture and had it fabricated in Dallas. She is especially proud of the dining room table, which measures 10 feet by 4 feet and can seat 12 comfortably. One tradition started the first night the family had dinner in their new beach house. They decided it would be fun for everyone visiting to sign the underneath of the table.

The tradition continues with quite a selection of autographs. There are details throughout the house that Emily has included to make the house special. A large closet they call “Guest Services” is filled with anything a visitor might need, from sunscreen and T-shirts to tooth brushes. Emily and Tom have a young daughter named Grace, who has her very own cozy nook tucked under the stairways leading up to the third floor, complete with her own pillows and dolls—a perfect place to snuggle with a book. Their boys, Brooks (19) and Max (17), have specially designed rooms designated the “Blue Room” and the “Grey Room.” The second level includes a large, open kitchen, a dining room and family den, and offers beautiful ocean views beyond the outdoor dining patio and deck. Burlingame RESTAURANT Newly opened on South 5th Street, Burlingame uses fresh ingredients to serve delicious local seafood and steaks, including a terrific Steak and Frites. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
W
hen Eric and Deb Fanelli opened Burlingame Restaurant with Chef Chad Livingston, their vision was simple: to provide great food from fresh ingredients, with unobtrusive service, in a refined and relaxed environment. I was eager to try this new restaurant everyone was talking about, and so I invited my friend Roger to join me there for dinner. Our evening began with two creative wine cocktails presented by Patrick, Burlingame’s manager, while we nibbled on bread served with herb butter. I loved my Strawberry Lime Prosecco, which was bursting with fruity flavor and lots of
bubbles. Roger sipped on a drink called Port of Havana, which was similar to a Mojito, but made with white port, lime juice, club soda, and mint, which made it light and refreshing. Our server Michael then brought us our appetizers: Mixed Greens with Roasted Baby Beets, Marinated Feta, Walnut Brittle, and Blood Orange Vinaigrette for me and Mayport Shrimp with Anson Mills Goat Cheese Grits, Bagna Cauda, Red Pepper Marmalade, and Benton’s Bacon for Roger.
My salad was so fresh and beautiful, and it was paired with Cuvaison Estate Sauvignon Blanc, a bright California white wine perfect for this appetizer. Roger was served a glass of Banfi San Angelo Pinot Grigio, an intense and fresh white from Italy. I had a difficult time convincing Roger to share our appetizers, but he finally succumbed, and I got to enjoy some of those rich, creamy grits! For our entrees, Roger had Wreckfish with Heirloom Spring Squash, Red Quinoa, Zucchini Puree, Stuffed Baby Bell Peppers, Mussels, and Chorizo. Wreckfish is a very popular fish that is similar to grouper, slightly sweet and mild, and perfect in this entrée. This dish was beautiful and complex, with an excellent balance of flavors and textures. Roger enjoyed a glass of NxNW Riesling Horse Heaven Hills with his fish, a perfect accompaniment. My entrée was Steak and Frites, Wagyu Hanging Tender, Wild Ramp Seasoned Fries, Mixed Mushroom Jus, and Aioli, and it was amazing. The beef was the most tender I have ever tasted, no knife needed! The mushroom sauce was savory and comforting, and I dipped some of those fabulous fries in the sauce. The fries were so crisp, and bursting with “rampy” flavor. Ramps are wild onions that grow in the eastern United States. The garlicky aioli was creamy and piquant! I loved the wine that was paired with this dish—Diseno Malbec, an Argentinean red that is great with beef. For dessert, we enjoyed a slice of Pecan Pie, which was made from Chef Chad’s stepmother’s recipe. It was one of my favorite dishes that night, served with chocolate ganache and brown butter ice cream, all made at the restaurant. We also shared a deconstructed Lemon Pie, which was tart and refreshing, served with a Ritz cracker crumble and a combination of fresh and macerated blueberries. And for a special surprise, Michael brought us each a glass of Royal Toka Aszu 5 Puttonyos dessert wine from Hungary, which tasted of honey and apricots. What an amazing meal! backyard adventure
a stand-up sunrise BY JULIE SIMMONS PHOTOS COURTESY AMELIA ISLAND PADDLE SURF COMPANY
T
he sun was peeking through the clouds when we pulled up to the Scott Road beach access for our very first standup paddle adventure. Lately, I’d sought an occasion to celebrate an East Coast sunrise, and owner Bobby Greene of Amelia Island Paddle Surf Company’s invitation to experience standup paddle (SUP) was the perfect choice. On this morning, Bobby was ready to host us for a serene sunrise paddle, or a fitness paddle if we wished. To join in the fun, I brought along my husband, Greg, a professional on the ocean, who teased me about how many times I’d tumble into the water. Once we arrived, Bobby gave us our game plan. “We start each tour on the beach. Based on the customer’s experience, we learn about the equipment, proper technique and safety, and then we get to paddling!” Bobby strapped a PFD on us, fitted us to our paddle, and let us choose a board. “We offer high performance carbon fiber touring boards and carbon fiber paddles,” Bobby explains. “We want customers to experience quality equipment and enjoy coming to spend the day or multiple days with us visiting the
different parts of the island.” Additionally, the company rents a variety of SUP boards, which include delivery and pick-up. Next, Bobby demonstrated how to paddle the board on my knees through the surf, and then I was ready to stand up and head north. A certified SUP instructor, Bobby stayed right beside me, sharing tips on how to paddle most efficiently while I watched expertly maneuver around me. Within just a few minutes, I gained a little confidence and learned a little about Bobby as we paddled parallel to the pink-and-purple sunrise. “Amelia Island was initially a vacation place,” he says. “Several years ago, my wife, Leah, and I were fortunate enough to move here with our two daughters. I am an avid surfer, free diver, kite surfer, and paddler, and have been on the water all of my life. My love of the water and the opportunity to enjoy life on Amelia created Amelia Island Paddle Surf Company.” Bobby’s mission is to share, celebrate, and preserve all Amelia Island offers from the deck of a stand-up paddle board. “Amelia Island is unique in the variety of ecosystems it has to enjoy—from marshland and creeks to open waters, there is just so much,” he says. “The versatility of SUP boards enables us to get into shallow waters and tight areas to explore.” Popular paddle tours include Simpson Creek, Amelia River and historic Fernandina Beach, and visits to Cumberland Island by way of Fort Clinch, where Bobby almost guarantees you’ll encounter over a dozen wild horses! Almost a pro paddler by now, I turned to laugh with Greg at the same time that a small swell rocked my board and sent me with a scream into the water. I came up laughing, and almost wishing I’d fallen at the beginning of the paddle! Greg and I had so much fun with Bobby that we’ve been telling all of our friends about it. What a fun ocean adventure, and all before 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning!
