Amelia Island is not your typical Florida beach town. In addition to its beautiful beaches, the island has a rich and diverse history, peopled with French explorers, Spanish conquistadors, Mexican revolutionaries, plantation owners and African American slaves, Confederate and Union soldiers, and an assortment of adventurers, pirates, and scallywags. That rich history has seen eight different flags flown over the island through the centuries, in addition to the settlements of indigenous peoples like the Timucuans, who lived on the island before European settlement. Amelia Island’s history can present such a dizzying array of peoples and events that it can be difficult to get a handle on it. One incomparable resource at our disposal to help understand the island’s past is Ft. Clinch State Park, where we can experience the world much like others before us did. We can learn a great deal from the excellent programs they offer. Another place to enter into our island’s history is in our local cemeteries, which preserve a unique record of the people and events that came before us. The grandest of these is Bosque Bello, located in Old Town Fernandina. The land for Bosque Bello was donated to the City of Fernandina in 1798 by Dom Domingo Fernandez, an early Spanish landowner. The earliest recorded grave at Bosque Bello is from 1813, and the succeeding gravestones read like a textbook of Amelia Island history. Inside it gates you will find the graves of early Spanish residents, politicians, gun runners, victims of the yellow fever and typhoid epidemics, the Sisters of St. Joseph who cared for them, and veterans of many wars. In addition to Bosque Bello, a number of “lesser” cemeteries on Amelia Island have their own tales to tell, which reveal a more complete picture of Amelia Island’s history. These cemeteries include St. Peter’s Cemetery, the Fernandez Reserve, and the Judd Cemetery, among others. Not all are open to the public, but they can be opened upon request. The Duncan Lamont Clinch Historical Society sometimes conducts a tour of these lesser cemeteries, and in this issue’s cover story, Dickie Anderson shares some of the stories from these carefully preserved burial grounds. Her story is accompanied by Steve Leimberg’s outstanding photographs. Also this month, we preview an exciting historical re-enactment, which includes some cannons firing, scheduled this month for the Plaza San Carlos in Old Town; learn about a local organization called Compassionate Fernandina, which is working to expand the circle of compassion in our community and in the world; feature a “Fernandina Faces” on Diana and Arthur Herman, who are involved with Amelia Community Theatre and Amelia Tree Conservancy; discover a fun “Backyard Adventure” with Backwater Cat Adventures; and much more.

T

he cemeteries of Amelia Island have stories to share about the island’s incredible history. The bones of Timucuan Indians, African-American slaves, plantation owners, the founders of the island’s shrimping industry, a local champion of Cuba’s Jose Marti, Amelia Island lighthouse keepers, victims of the yellow and typhoid fever epidemics, Catholic sisters who nursed the victims of yellow fever, and veterans of many wars—from the American Revolution to the present day—are buried in island cemeteries and burial grounds. It is an enormous responsibility caring for and protecting the graves of those who have gone before us. There

are stringent laws protecting graves and cemeteries on both the federal and state level. This is critical in the protection of both the remains and the historical information many of these graves reveal. Amelia Island has many caring and dedicated people who protect the surprising variety of burial grounds located on the island.

BOSQUE BELLO CEMETERY The most well-known is Bosque Bello Cemetery, translated as “Beautiful Woods,” which was said to have been established by the Spanish in 1798, with the first recorded burial of a French soldier, Peter Bouissou de Nicar, in

1813. The cemetery is located at 1321 North 14th Street near the entrance of historic Old Town Fernandina Beach. The City of Fernandina Beach added a “new” section in the mid-1940s. In early 2018, two public meetings were held at the Fernandina Beach library to solicit interest in forming a volunteer-based Friends of Bosque Bello group. Friends groups are a common way to provide additional support and resources for cemeteries. A team of interested volunteers stepped up to address the challenges of protecting and maintaining the historic cemetery. In March this year, the first organized clean-up of Bosque Bello

www.AmeliaIslander.com

Cemetery took place. Volunteers at the cleanup were required to have participated in a Cemetery Resource Protection Training (CRPT) by the Florida Public Archaeology Network prior to the first clean-up. Citizens and groups, including the following, responded enthusiastically: Amelia Island Fernandina Restoration Foundation, Amelia Island Genealogical Society, Amelia Island Museum of History, Amelia Island Trails, Amelia Tree Conservancy, Bertram Garden Club, Duncan Lamont Clinch Historical Society of Amelia Island, and the Historic District Council of Fernandina Beach. Future plans include the establishment of a columbarium. A columbarium is a place for the respectful and, usually, public storage of urns holding the cremated remains of the deceased. Currently, there is no such facility at Bosque Bello. So-called “cremains” may be buried in plots of a size to accommodate coffins. The Columbarium Steering Committee, under the leadership of Nan Voit, director of the Parks & Recreation Department in the City of Fernandina Beach, has pounded stakes in the ground to outline the site location. Local architect John Cotner has presented conceptual drawings of a columbarium, which were received with great enthusiasm by the group. Bosque Bello is the largest of the island’s cemeteries. There are many other cemeteries that are on protected land with designated caretakers. Many early grave markers were made of wood and have disintegrated over time. In some cases, vandals have damaged cemetery markers. In addition, there are many unmarked graves.

The Duncan Lamont Clinch Historical Society sponsors a field trip each year. In 2018, the organized tour showcased some of the so-called “lesser” known cemeteries on Amelia Island. The first stop was the beautiful and haunting St. Peter’s Cemetery, where Chip Wood, caretaker of the historic burial ground, took the group on a tour. Many of Fernandina’s former leaders and members of St. Peter Episcopal Church are buried there.

Wood pointed out some of the more interesting tombstones and burial sites sheltered by the beautiful old oaks dripping with Spanish moss. In 1872, the county surveyor who laid out the new town of Fernandina surveyed and divided the cemetery into plots. Church records reveal a wide variety of causes of death, including yellow fever, consumption, neuralgia of the heart, congestion of the brain, killed by a train, shot, or drowned. The Delanys, an Amelia Island African-American family known for their talent with cement and stone, created many of the tombstones in the cemetery.

FERNANDEZ RESERVE BURIAL GROUNDS The next stop was the Fernandez Reserve Burial Grounds located between St. Michael Catholic Church and St. Michael Academy. The group gathered in front of the wrought iron fence that surrounds the historic tombstones. The Fernandez Reserve is also known as Villalonga Park and is situated on the site of the Spanish land grant originally given to Domingo Fernandez. The family burials date from 1833 to 1892. Jean Mann has written a book, Family Legacy: The Last Spanish Land Grant in Florida, which traces the genealogy of Domingo and Mary Fernandez descendants and offers a history of the historic burial ground. Mann became interested when the St. Michael’s wanted to expand the footprint of its church building, which would have encroached on the Fernandez Grant. In Mann’s opinion, the one-acre burial ground is the last Spanish Land Grant in Florida still owned by the descendants of the original grantee.

THE JUDD CEMETERY The Judd Cemetery is located on the busy First Coast Highway near Phillips Manor Road. Jane Phillips Collins, whose ancestors are buried on the property, is a member of the Judd Cemetery Association and she is very familiar with the history of the small cemetery. The land that includes the cemetery was purchased by Jehiel S. Judd in 1884. A portion of the property was used as a burial site, which eventually evolved into the Judd Cemetery. Originally from Iowa, Judd bought the property sight unseen for farming. Unfortunately, he died while visiting the island and is buried on the property. Many families that lived in Amelia City are buried there, including several Gerbing family members. The parents and other relatives of Gustav George Gerbing, famed for his azalea and camellia plants and gardens, are buried in the Judd Cemetery. Gerbing grew up on the Amelia River on a property first purchased by his father in 1897. The noted horticulturist developed Gerbing Gardens, which was a popular tourist attraction for many years. The gardens, with their breathtaking displays of camellias and azaleas, were located near the present day cemetery.

THE VAUGHN CEMETERY Just south of the Judd Cemetery on First Coast Highway, located on the west side next to Waterwheel Cigar, is the Vaughn Cemetery. Jane Phillips Collins, an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, has been instrumental in preserving and protecting the Vaughan burial grounds. John Daniel Vaughan was a veteran of both the American Revolution and the War of 1812. The original monument was placed

prior to the Civil War and was later destroyed. Currently, a six-foot-tall, four-sided obelisk marks the grave of John Vaughan. Tradition says that this obelisk and the original monument were placed by the U.S. government. It is thought that John Vaughan was the only veteran of both the Revolution and the War of 1812 buried in Florida. In 1797, he received a grant from the Spanish for a large tract of land on Amelia Island. He later received one hundred acres bounty land for service in the American Revolution and Indian Wars. Indications are that others are buried in the small cemetery, but no definitive list of interments is known to exist.

Further south on AIA on the left of the entrance to the Plantation Point development, a large sign marks the entrance to the private Franklintown Cemetery. George Green, a member of the Franklintown Cemetery Association, has taken responsibility for protecting and maintaining the cemetery. In 1971, when no deed was found, the owners of what is now Plantation Point deeded the cemetery and an access easement to the trustees of the Franklintown Cemetery Association. The configuration of the present fenced area matches the 1971 deed description, but old-timers say that the missing deed covered a larger area and unaccounted-for graves remain outside the fence. During the yellow fever epidemics on the island, many bodies were buried without any markers, and some are probably buried outside the cemetery’s current grounds. The recorded deed gives the trustees the right to determine who can be buried on the grounds. Burial privileges are restricted to those who are descendants of the Harrison Plantation slaves. The deed reads: “All descendants and their spouses of those colored workers prior to

Right: A gravestone in Franklintown Cemetery. Below: George Green, a member of the Franklintown Cemetery Association. Below right: The gravesite of Emanuel F. Drummond, the first Vietnam War casualty in Nassau County. Bottom: A plaque marking the place where Native Americans of the Guale tribe are buried.

and at the close of the War Between the States belonging on and to the old Harrison Plantation. Many of the obvious graves are unmarked. Of those marked, a high percentage are military, including a grave for a Union soldier. A practice of shallow burial with the top of the encasing concrete vault exposed is common. The first Nassau County resident to die in the Vietnam War is buried in the cemetery.

THE HARRISON FAMILY CEMETERY The Harrison family burial ground, another private cemetery, is hidden from view and is surrounded by modern development. The property is listed on the original Spanish Land Grant of 1793. It was given to Samuel Harrison. The cemetery is a land-locked fenced and gated one-acre parcel, with an easement onto First Coast Highway/A1A. Access is limited to Harrison descendants and invited guests. Immediately upon entering the parcel, you will find plaques for the historic Harrison Family Cemetery and one describing the Guale Indians, who are buried there. In the early days of the development of Amelia Island Plantation, a burial ground was discovered that contained the remains of the Guale, Native Americans who occupied the island for generations. They had been Christianized and buried at the site of a Spanish mission. The Dorions, owners of the property, started an archeological investigation in 1985, which later was supported by Florida state agencies. The Guale remains were reinterred in the Harrison Family Cemetery in 1985. A plaque marks the spot. Thanks to the City of Fernandina, descendants of family members buried in private burial grounds and the dedicated volunteers who maintain and protect our sacred cemeteries our history is protected and preserved. MARITIME MUSEUM OF AMELIA ISLAND HOSTS “TREASURE OUR BEACH” PARTY Did you know there’s real treasure at the Maritime Museum of Amelia Island? Amelia Research and Recovery, an organization that believes in the preservation of history, the environment, and in salvage of historical shipwrecks, opened the museum to share finds from its work with the community. Now the group is going one step further and planning a public awareness event to help protect our beaches. “When we started 20 years ago, we were seeing steel, wood, and glass on Jamil Sharif the ocean floor,” says museum manager Billy Taylor. “Today, we see evidence of a serious problem with plastics in the water and spend a good amount of our time cleaning up trash from the ocean. We want access to our beaches, but we must take care of them, too!” The Maritime Museum invites you to a Treasure Our Beach Party on Saturday, June 15 at Main Beach from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. for live music and family fun, including metal detecting games for kids and a BYOBeer Garden, as well as an appearance by their treasure hunting boat, The Polly L., which will host bands on her deck. For more information or to sponsor or perform, contact the museum at (904) 277-1948.

The Newcomers Club of Amelia Island recently held its 12th annual Give a Heart Luncheon Fundraiser and raised $6,000 for the Nassau County Council on Aging. The event is funded through the hard work of dedicated members who solicit donations from local businesses and personally contribute for the Give a Heart Raffle. The raffle is loads of fun, with its purposeful prizes that promote friendship, fellowship, and giving back among members. Favorites include yard work, hosting a luncheon, throwing a pizza party, burning a playlist of someone’s favorite tunes, Cherie Vander Biezen, Janice Ancrum, sponsoring a round of miniature golf, baking a pie, and Wendy Taylor cake, or cookies, or giving someone a ride to the airport! The first year of the raffle included 45 prizes, and a decade later the raffle featured 150 donations. The Give a Heart event at Osprey Village was committed to supporting the Council on Aging, whose mission is to enhance the lives of older adults through services and compassionate care designed to improve the health, independence, and economic security of Nassau County seniors and their families. For more information on the Newcomers Club of Amelia Island or the Council on Aging, visit their websites at www.newcomersamelia.org and www.nassaucountycouncilonaging.org.

FRIENDS OF FORT CLINCH ADOPT A NEST PROGRAM Did you know that Friends of Fort Clinch has recorded up to 57 sea turtle nests in just one season lately? That’s because of the important work they are doing patrolling the beaches at Fort Clinch from May 1 to Oct. 31. Each morning, rangers and five volunteers travel by buggy along the coast in search of tracks and nests, which are then staked off and monitored for signs of hatching. This protects the nest, as well as a hatchling if there one is stuck in the nest. Volunteers then release the hatchling into the ocean. “I learned about sea turtle work while vacationing on Cumberland Island,” explains volunteer Sandra Baker-Hinton. “I said that if I ever live at the beach, this is what I want to do.” Fast forward a few years, and she’s one of the primary volunteers at Fort Clinch. “In summers, the park is my second home,” she says. Today, Friends of Fort Clinch is fundraising $15,000 for a new buggy, a resource that is essential to their work of protecting sea turtles. To get involved and support this effort, the public is invited to Adopt a Nest for $100. For more information, email friendsofftclinchinc@gmail.com or call (904) 277-7274.

he Island Art Association (IAA) Gallery is owned and operated by over 250 artists and associates. The gallery features paintings, wood, clay jewelry, finer, photography, art glass, and much more. For over 40 years, IAA has been offering a wide range of art opportunities for Nassau County residents and visitors alike through their Education Center. Operated by volunteers, IAA is a 501(c)3 charitable organization whose mission is to develop and sustain interest, appreciation, and enjoyment of the arts. A year-round project for IAA is administration of the Arts and Crafts Division of the annual Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival. Artists are selected through a detailed jury process and they are given assistance through the festival by IAA volunteers. Guest judges review all of the art, awards are given, and then the entire process begins again for the next year. Nouveau Art, a bi-monthly themed show and sale, is among the variety of programs offered at the gallery. “New” artwork is submitted by IAA members and other community artists and citizens

for five juried themed shows each year. This show gives all artists the opportunity to display and sell accepted artwork in the gallery for a period of two months. New to IAA this year is their “Sundays on Second” free Sunday afternoon art films. Every third Sunday at 2 p.m., IAA presents a film about art, compete with free popcorn and beverages. The June 16 offering is The Agony and the Ecstasy, which portrays the conflicts between Michelangelo and Pope Julius II during the painting of the Sistine Chapel. The gallery is open late during Second Saturday Artwalk. IAA offers a variety of membership options which provide support for the arts on Amelia Island. For information regarding July Children’s Summer Art Camp, monthly Art Chats, classes, and workshops for all ages, visit www.islandart.org and “like” them on Facebook. IAA is located at 18 North 2nd Street. It is open Monday through Thursday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, call (904) 261-7020.

acksonville Beach-based T. Gregory Imports has finally opened a store in Fernandina Beach! Todd Whitten and Romey Maloy, who own both the Jacksonville Beach and St. Augustine stores, say that customers would come in and ask them why there wasn’t a store in Fernandina Beach. “They told us there was nothing like our shop in the area, so we decided to open a store up here.” T. Gregory Imports is a home decor and accessories store which imports a wide range of both antique and production furniture and accessories from around the Pacific Rim. “We love to travel in Southeast Asia, especially Thailand, and love selecting items we know our customers will enjoy,” says Todd. Whitten, who was previously a jewelry designer and a wholesaler of home décor, decided it would be more fun to work in retail. He opened the Jacksonville Beach store in 2002, and then a store and warehouse in St. Augustine. T. Gregory Imports carries beautiful antique Chinese cabinets, outdoor teak furniture and a large variety of unique home accessories and designer grade florals. The 4,500-squarefoot Fernandina Beach store also showcases handmade mirrors, lamps, ceramics, original art, and terra cotta pots. Many of the production pieces are from re-claimed wood. Manager Nathan Toothman loves working with customers to bring their ideas to fruition. T. Gregory Imports is located at the corner of SR 200 and Old Nassauville Road next to West Marine. Prime Lending

rime Lending opened on Amelia Island in 2010. “We are a different type of mortgage company,” says Senior Loan Originator and Branch Manager Eric Corbitt. “We are a familyand fun-oriented company.” Eric and the four other lenders who make up the staff of the company all left another banking company to start the local branch of Prime Lending. All have years of experience in the mortgage banking industry. “We all came over at the same time and developed a culture that keeps people working here,” says Eric. “Our company embodies the team spirit, and our customers sense this.” A Fernandina Beach native, Eric is committed to helping local customers. Eric and the others work to help homebuyers in Nassau County, but Eric says they do work all across the country—anywhere in our “sphere of influence!” Prime Lending wrote $50 million in loans last year in Nassau County and northeast Florida. Eric, who says he and his wife just built their dream home north of Main Beach, serves on the board of Micah’s Place and is active in the Fernandina Beach High School Foundation; other staff members are involved in local charitable organizations, and the company itself is involved in the Amelia Nassau County Association of Realtors. “We are locals,” Eric says proudly. “My son will graduate Fernandina Beach High School in 2023 as the fourth generation of our family to go there.” Prime Lending is located at 9900 Amelia Island Parkway, Suite 400, and can be reached at (904) 557-9903 or at ecorbitt@primelending.com.

Cannons on thePlaza With a living history experience on Plaza San Carlos this month, Amelia Island celebrates its rich history and the flags immortalized in its nickname the “Isle of Eight Flags.” BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTOS BY SHERRY CARTER

O

ld Town, the original location of the town of Fernandina, has the distinction of being the last Spanish city platted in the Western Hemisphere in 1811. Today Old Town’s Fernandina Plaza Historic State Park, located on a bluff overlooking the Amelia River, is the smallest state park in Florida, with one of the richest histories in the Southeast. “As we stand here in the grass looking over the river, you’d never guess there was a fort here,” says Frank Ofeldt, local historian and Fort Clinch State Park ranger. “Plaza San Carlos was the plaza ground in front of the Spanish Fort San Carlos, built in 1816. It was a hub of activity and the site of Spanish municipal and military activity on Amelia Island dating from the late 1780s. This area was of military importance because of its deep harbor

and its strategic location near the northern boundary of Spanish Florida.” On June 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Ofeldt and his band of military reenactors will host an inaugural event called “Cannons on the Plaza,” featuring a living history experience which will represent all eight flags of the “Isle of Eight Flags” that Fernandina is known for. “Fernandina has had the flags of the following nations flown over it since 1562: France, Spain, Great Britain, Spain (again), the Republic of Florida, the Green Cross of Florida, Mexico, the Confederate States of America, and the United States” says Ofeldt. “It is the only municipality in the United States that has flown eight different national flags, and Cannons on the Plaza will help visitors understand the rich history of Amelia Island.” continued on next page

Guests can expect to see soldiers dressed in military uniforms that represent the many conflicts that have shaped Amelia Island, including the Patriot War, the Seminole Wars, the Civil War, Gregor MacGregor’s seizure of the fort, and others. Members of the Fort Clinch artillery group will be shooting cannons throughout the day. The Amelia Island Museum of History will be present to offer visitors in-depth stories about Amelia Island’s rich history. “Long before the arrival of Europeans on what is now called Amelia Island, the Old Town site was home to Native Americans,” says Ofeldt. “The Timucuan had settled on the island about A.D. 1000, calling it ‘Napoyca.’ They remained on the island until the early 18th century, when European settlement began. “The French, English, and Spanish all maintained a presence on Amelia Island at various times during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, but the Spanish established the town of Fernandina. What we’re trying to accomplish with Cannons on the Plaza is a history timeline that visitors and residents may not know very much about.” “Visiting this park can be an imaginative experience, standing on a piece of land that has supported settlements dating back more than 2,000 years,” says Ofeldt. “We’re hoping that visitors to Cannons on the Plaza will face the river and feel the same breeze the French explorers felt in 1562; take a deep breath and smell the aroma of the salt marsh, just like the British of 1702 who used this area as a hideout did; listen to the rustling of the trees and the call of the birds, the same sounds the Spanish heard in 1811.” During the June 15 event, several streets in Old Town will be closed down for parking. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, water, sunscreen, and snacks. Other food and beverages will be available for sale. For more information, call Fort Clinch State Park at (904) 2777274. ach of us has an innate capacity for compassion. It is as natural to us as breathing. This was the revelation of local physician Tom Washburn while he was a member of a group called “The Seekers,” which met at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. The group was studying a book called Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life, written by former nun Karen Armstrong. Noting that the golden rule is a method rather than a belief, Armstrong advocates that people adopt Socrates’s “compassionate discourse” as a way to get along: “Each participant should make a ‘place for the other’ in his mind,” writes Armstrong. “We do this by listening intently and sympathetically to the ideas of others in dialogue and allowing them to unsettle our own convictions.” Armstrong and her followers started the Charter for Compassion in 2009, written by a distinguished group of clergy and laypeople representing six faiths. Part of their mission statement includes: “Aware that our world is deeply troubled and polarized, the Charter for Compassion is committed to making the world a better place. We work to establish and sustain cultures of compassion locally and globally through diverse sectors - arts, business, education, the environment, healthcare, interfaith communities, peace, restorative justice, science and research, social justice, social services, science and research and women and girls.” Compassionate Fernandina was founded by Washburn and Jane Holzkamp in 2014. Within the first two years, the group met regularly, cultivating members and compassion in their own relationships and lives. As seeds were planted, the group grew in size, and in 2016, it became a non-profit 501(c)3 agency. In 2017, Compassionate Fernandina was responsible for the City of Fernandina Beach’s proclamation declaring the community a Compassionate City, and today, the group’s vision is for community members to treat each other and the Earth with kindness, dignity, and respect. “What a joy it is to be a part of this special community,” says Peggie Weeks, president of Compassionate Fernandina. continued on next page

“Compassionate Fernandina has changed my world. Our organization is a work in progress as we continue to find meaningful ways to fulfill our mission of widening the circle of compassion in Fernandina Beach and beyond. So many people and organizations in our city already have compassion at their core. Our desire is to partner with these amazing groups to help our community be the absolute best it can be.” Compassionate Fernandina partners with the Northeast Community Action Agency and the City of Fernandina Beach for the Beautification Project. They also partner with the Wild Amelia Junior Naturalists for their Compassion & Butterflies project. “In partnership with the local Rotary and Girl Scouts of America Gateway Council, a Girl Scout patch has been created that focuses on compassion,” says Weeks. “In earning the patch, girls will learn how they can grow compassion in their own lives and community by being kind and caring for others.” Other initiatives include a partnership with Amelia Tree Conservancy and the Junior Naturalists to teach children about the critical importance of trees in the community. Another project called “Compassionate Conversations: Enhancing Respectful Discourse” gathers people of diverse opinions to talk to each other, finding common ground and ways to work together in a spirit of empathy and respect. “Some of the ways you can become more compassionate are so simple,” says Weeks. “Practice daily acts of kindness, for another person, for our community, and for our Earth. Call a friend who is facing a challenge. Join a community effort to help others. Pick up trash on the beach. Kindness is contagious.” For more information about Compassionate Fernandina, visit www.compassionatefernandina. org. For more information about the Charter for Compassion or to sign the charter yourself, visit www. charterforcompassion.org. To hear Armstrong explain the compassion movement, go to www.TED.com and search for Karen Armstrong.

iana and Arthur Herman have an abundance of energy and talent, which they freely share with their island community. Both native New Yorkers, they left teaching and university administrative duties behind and have embraced life in northern Florida. Prior to retirement, they visited many places, including California and Mexico, looking for the perfect place to enjoy retirement. In 2008, they found it while visiting a relative in Jacksonville. A sightseeing drive north to Amelia Island brought them along Heckscher Drive. They were struck by the landscape, which brought memories of Provincetown on Cape Cod, a favorite spot for the couple. Their enthusiasm only grew once they were on the island. They even contacted a realtor, but found nothing available in their price range. While exploring island neighborhoods, they passed a house for sale by owner. The couple toured the house and knew it was the house of their dreams. They bought it! They spent vacations and summers on Amelia prior to retirement, then moved to the island full-time in 2011. Part of the island’s original attraction was its art scene and theaters. Few communities offer as much—theaters, art galleries, music festivals, and the annual Amelia Island Book Festival. Their passions are many. Both have been involved with Amelia Tree Conservancy from its earliest days and are currently on the board. The Conservancy is a diverse coalition of Amelia Island citizens and friends dedicated to preserving Amelia Island’s maritime forest canopy—native island trees and the valuable environment they create. Arthur’s training and expertise in landscape design and Diana’s creative energy are enormous assets to the organization. Arthur is a renowned artist. He has painted many large paintings, including one of Martin Luther King hanging in the Peck Center. His paintings can be seen at Bar Zin. To say they love the theater is an understatement. They have worked together on the magical sets for many island productions, 51 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

including Grease, Mary Poppins, Avenue Q, and most recently, Annie. Arthur took the stage in a recent production of South Pacific, wowing audiences with his portrayal of Luther Burris. Diana is no stranger to the stage. She has appeared in many shows, including The Good Body, All in the Timing, Collected Stories, Rabbit Hole, and Other Desert Cities. She is very proud of the script she staged based on an actual sexual assault survivor’s statement read in court. Her play, You Don’t Know Me, has been performed on stage several times. Future performances are in the works. All money generated from ticket sales is donated to the Women’s Center of Jacksonville, Rape Crisis Team of Nassau County. She would love to see the play incorporated in college orientation programs. She competed with other storytellers in the Friends of the Library Story Slam in 2015. She also created a buzz when she performed her poem, Words Matter, at a Live Ink Theater performance at Story & Song Bookstore Bistro. The couple enjoy walks on the beach, daily swims, and time with their grandchildren, who live on the island. In an interesting twist, instead of grandparents following their children and grandchildren, the Hermans found Amelia Island first, and daughter and husband and grandchildren followed. Arthur takes time out for a bit of golf and poker, while Diana treasures her non-competitive mahjong games with a group of “spirited, like-minded women.” JUNE 2019

Address: 1205 Atlantic Avenue Date built: 1891 Built by: John D. Palmer Builder: John R. Mann

The Palmer House BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTO BY JAN JOHANNES

itting serenely on busy Atlantic Avenue, the Palmer House is described as both Key West and Colonial Revival, with it broad ground verandas and second floor porches. The extensive galleries are typical of Southern house design. There are four chimneys and eight fireplaces. The house has 12-foot ceilings and beautiful heart pine floors throughout. The house was built by prominent island builder John R. Mann and his brother. Though not in the Historic District, it is considered one of the island’s much admired landmark buildings. John Denham Palmer was the son of a well-respected doctor and became a doctor himself. Palmer was a surgeon in the Civil War, prominent local physician, pioneer practitioner in the treatment of yellow fever, and one of the first presidents of the Florida Medical Society. Dr. Palmer, along with his brother, T. W. Palmer, established a drug store on Centre Street. At great personal sacrifice, Dr. Palmer cared for yellow fever victims during major epidemics, including the devastating one in 1877. His interest and experience working with yellow fever sent him to Memphis, Tennessee in 1878 to aid that city. Palmer and his wife, Sarah, purchased the property in 1890. Their mortgage was with none other than Lucy

Carnegie, widow of Thomas Carnegie and sister-in-law of Andrew Carnegie. Mrs. Carnegie was very involved in many charitable activities on the island and came to Fernandina every Sunday from her Cumberland Island home to attend services at St. Peter’s, and then enjoy an early dinner at the Florida House Inn. The Palmers moved to Jacksonville in 1905. Lucy Carnegie specified that the house would belong to the city as long as it was operated as a hospital, which it did for many years. Under her conditions, the hospital was to be used for “wounded, invalid, or indigent persons, requiring medical or surgical treatment and assistance.” If the city did not meet her conditions, the deed was to be returned to her and to her heirs. It was returned in 1914. Through the years, it has been owned by land speculators and area paper mills, used for offices, and, at times, it was rented out to boarders. It stood empty for many years, and island children thought it was haunted. In 1945, it was purchased by Joseph and Margaret Oxley. Jack Heard purchased it in 1974, and he renamed it the OxleyHeard Funeral Home.

une is about weddings, graduations, and outdoor fun. It’s also the month of roses, blooming perennials, flowering fragrant shrubs, and annuals for more color! Oh, isn’t it wonderful! Every gardener needs to include some carefree perennials in their flower beds, and some eye-catching beauties are available this year. One of these new beauties comes from an old friend: Echinacea, the Cone Flower. The new one in the Sombrero series is called Tres Amigos. The flowers open to a peachycoral color and age to rose, then fade to burgundy, so your plants will sport all three shades simultaneously for a striking multicolor effect. Enjoy the flutter of hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees around them all summer, and as the season turns, songbirds will enjoy the seeds of the spent blooms. Be sure to deadhead to increase their flower power. Tres Amigos grows 18 to 20 inches tall and 20 to 24 inches wide. They are great as border plants or as cut flowers with a long vase life. For vibrant colors, try the new Salud series of Helenium autumnale, with new

PP plants known as Sneeze Weed. They are stunning summer-into-fall garden flowers, making wonderful cut flowers with a long vase life. Three new varieties are Yellow, Golden, and Embers. These colorful flowers attract butterflies, are deer- and droughtresistant, heat-tolerant, and attract bees and butterflies. They are very compact, which makes them great container plants. Well-branched in a columnar shape, they hold up well to weather. Heleniums are sun lovers and should be planted in a full-sun location. The Salud series grow 14 to 16 inches in height and 12 to 14 inches in width. All are really beautiful. Is anyone familiar with Penstemon, known as Beard Tongue? lovely to look at. The Lavender Bicolor has rich lavender flowers with white throats. They grow 16 to 18 inches in height and width. It is a prolific rebloomer, with vibrant flowers, a compact upright habit, and dark green foliage. Lavender Bicolor is drought- and heat-tolerant. It prefers well-drained soil in full sun, but tolerate a range of soils and conditions. It flowers profusely in early spring and re-blooms in the fall, which is a great time to have color when earlier bloomers are fading. It likes a little food once a month, with light watering. Red Rocks has stunning vibrant rose-red flowers that bloom in spring and summer. The bright rose flowers have magenta-veined white throats on an attractive mound of narrow, dark green leaves. It has an upright habit, growing 30 inches in height and 12 to 15 inches in width. It loves full sun, is heat- and frost-tolerant, attracts bees, and is very low maintenance. Fertilize it only when needed. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

dream come true

BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTOS BY TERRI WENZELBURGER, ECVT PHOTOGRAPHY

J

im and Donna Sweet have been visiting Amelia Island for more than 25 years, and they knew that someday they would build their dream house on the island they love and treasure. Through the years, they have remodeled many homes, and their marshside home is the second house that they have built from the ground up. Their focus from the very beginning was the marsh. They wanted a home that the two of them could live in comfortably, and which could be expanded for entertaining and for visits

from friends and family. The Sweets have two sons—one married, one single—and two grandsons who visit often. Located in Amelia Island Plantation, the 5,000 square foot home is not just near the marsh; it is on the marsh. Carefully designed to accommodate the tides and maximize the beautiful live oaks at water’s edge, the home is truly one with nature. Little did they know that two nasty storms, Hurricanes Matthew and Irma, would challenge their plans. Hurricane damage resulted in the loss of eleven trees on the property.

They worked with Amelia Island architect John Cotner and builder Steve Pickett of Pickett Construction. The combination proved to be a winner. In describing the home, Donna calls it Southern Coastal. Golden-shaded shingles, a variety of levels and roof lines, and different window sizes dominate the exterior design. After entering the front door, one is impressed with the broad expanse of windows and the view of the marsh and Amelia River beyond. The roughly 25-by-25 foot room is dramatic. It offers a number of spaces, including a dining area, an entertainment space, and casual collections of chairs and tables where people can gather. All doors and trim throughout the house are dark mahogany, making strong design statements. The dark linear detailing is reminiscent of

Amelia Tavern After opening Amelia Island Brewing Company, their own in-house brewery, Amelia Tavern serves a variety of great-tasting beer with their delicious wings, burgers, and seafood. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

A

few days ago, I stepped into the Amelia Tavern to meet my friend, Russ, and see what was happening on the downtown scene. Russell was waiting at the bar and he was already getting an education from bartender Ian Kitch, who turned me on to what exactly is new downtown: Amelia Island Brewing Company. Since February this year, Amelia Tavern has been exclusively serving beers produced in their own in-house brewery. After a couple of false starts early on, the gleaming tanks are turning out delicious beers to delight the palate of both the casual beer drinker and the discerning aficionado. Before I could order, I noticed general manager Ed Howell behind me with brewmaster Jay Mack, the gentlemen Russ and I had come to meet. Jay was in the middle of transferring their upcoming Summer Shandy from one of the fermentation tanks into the brite tank, where it will be carbonated. Having never been so close to the process, I was taken in by the aesthetics. 68 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

It’s easy to see how someone could get into the art and science of brewing beer, but it takes someone with real determination and a sense of pride to dedicate your life to the craft, then move from Nebraska to Fernandina Beach for an opportunity to establish the only local brewpub exclusively featuring its own product. Jay Mack is that person. After our impromptu tour, we returned to our high-top table to enjoy some frosty adult beverages. We ordered a couple of appetizers, and Jay selected a few beers for our consideration. A flight of four 5-ounce glasses soon followed, a taste of the Amelia Tavern. First, we tried the Tavern IPA, an English IPA, meaning it has been fermented with English ale yeast, bringing noticeable fruity esters, this one with orange and cantaloupe, and strong flavor from the hops. Its tartness paired well with the A.T. Pretzel, served with beer cheese and horseradish mustard. Second, we tried the Sm’kn M’rtha, a classic porter whose malts are smoked with cherry wood. With it, we enjoyed the Cola BBQ Chicken Wings, served hot and crispy, with a sticky sweet glaze making a perfect partner to the slight hoppy bitterness. Next, we sampled the Sarbi Mocha Porter. This dark and delicious brew had hints of coffee and rich caramel. The Sarbi Mocha Porter is not only delicious, but it is also a community service. For each pint sold, one dollar goes to support Keep Nassau Beautiful and Micah’s Place. Our final beer in the flight was the Dragonslords 6, a Double IPA, a distinctly American-style India Pale Ale. Like most things American, double or “Imperial” IPAs are not subtle, nor is the person for whom it is named, Major Rossi-Cayton, the first female to fly a combat mission in the U.S. military. The Amelia Island Brewing Company at the Amelia Tavern is doing big things. When I asked Ed what he wanted me to share with our readers, without hesitation he responded, “We brew beer!” Find them online at the www.ameliatavern. com or at Centre and 4th Streets in Fernandina Beach. While you’re there, look into becoming a member of their Tapstar Keg Club and be the first to taste what’s new. JUNE 2019

Fast Fun on the water

BY JULIE SIMMONS • PHOTOS COURTESY OF BACKWATER CAT ADVENTURES

H

ow had my family and I ever missed Backwater Cat Adventures? Can you imagine a go-cart on the water? That is exactly what the thrilling adventure of piloting or riding in a two-seater mini catamaran is like! My kids, Raleigh (11) and Carter (7), and I showed up on the dock at Amelia Island Marina in our bathing suits, water socks, and lifejackets as I attempted to tame the excitement of my seven-year-old son for our upcoming adventure. Captain Cray met us by the parking lot, where he won us over with his friendly smile and an invitation to pose for a group photo, “just in case the Coast Guard needs to come find us!” After a good laugh, Cray helped Carter and I into our boat, showed us how to open our dry storage and cooler full of cold waters, and gave me a five-minute orientation on how to operate the Craigcat vessel, which travels up to 30 mph. “I can’t believe you’re going to drive this,” laughed my son. Meanwhile, Raleigh was co-piloting with the guide boat and grateful for the safety his experience provided. Cray pushed us off the dock and we fell in line with the boats ahead. Thankfully, the first five minutes are in a no-wake zone, which allowed me to become familiar with the throttle and steering, and especially my backseat driver saying, “Mom, go this way!” or “Mom, you’re going to hit the nicest boat in the marina!” We finally made it into the river, and I saw Cray wave, “Come on!” I gathered my courage, pushed forward on the gas, and we were off and laughing our heads off! 84 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

“Thanks so much for bringing me, Mom!” said Carter. We zipped to the right, zipped to the left, pointed to our neighbor’s house, and before we knew it, we were admiring beautiful downtown Fernandina Beach from a new perspective. Soon I saw Captain Cray and Raleigh stop ahead, and I managed to navigate beside them. And then I saw them—a mom and a baby dolphin surfacing just a few feet from us. Cray explained that the mom will always stay between the boat and her baby as he snapped a picture of us smiling in awe. Next, we were off to Cumberland Island. As we approached, I could see the wild horses, which take my breath away every time. We beached our boats and hopped off, had a quick history lesson from Cray, and explored the island for 15 minutes taking photos, collecting shells, and learning about horseshoe crabs. It was time for us to load up, and Raleigh rode with me as we traversed to Fort Clinch to take some photos from the water and eat some donuts! “Here’s what you’re going to do,” Cray said to me. “Put the steering all the way down, and floor it!” So I did, we died laughing, and Cray caught it all on camera for the photos that Backwater Cat Adventures provides to each of its groups. “That was so much fun!” we screamed. And you’ll scream, too, for a day with Backwater Cat Adventures! The 2.5-hour tour went by like a flash, but our memories of the fun on the water and laughing together will last forever.
