Each year, the July issue brings our traditional “Fun in the Summer Sun” guide, in which we highlight some of the varied and exhilarating activities that are available to enjoy around the island during the summer season. This issue always makes it hard for us to stay planted in our beach chair (or on the couch) because we are reminded once again of all the fun-filled things to do that visitors to the island are enjoying, and we want to be in on all the summer fun, too! We hate to admit it, but for too much of the year, as we’re preoccupied with various responsibilities, we tend to live our lives as if we were stationed on the moon rather than surrounded on all sides by scenic waterways. That’s why we always commit in the warm summer months to getting our sea legs back. The whole family can’t wait to break free from our daily routines, and we start daydreaming about kayaking and sailing, surfing and fishing, boat cruises, and all sorts of excuses to inject something out of the ordinary into our lives. Take a river cruise, set sail from Fernandina Harbor, grab a kayak—it doesn’t matter how we do it, we just want to get on the water! That’s our family’s summer homework. Of course, if you’d rather keep your feet planted on dry ground, all the fun won’t leave you behind. Jump on a Segway, bike off the south end of the island, saddle up for some equestrian fun, or grab your tennis racquet or golf clubs. There’s a reason why people come from all over the Southeast to enjoy this island paradise! Naturally, we’re not saying you should completely abandon the opposite of all that exhilarating activity: some good, old-fashioned chilling out. While you’re sitting peacefully on the beach or by the pool, we hope you’ll enjoy the rest of what the Islander has to offer this month, including an article on the O’Day family and the great work they have accomplished through their annual ALS Golf Classic—now in its tenth year—which honors their loving husband and father, John Louis O’Day; a feature on all the aquatic activity that Amelia Island has to offer this summer (and year-round); and an update by Dickie Anderson on what’s new at White Oak Plantation, which has new owners, but the same worthwhile mission; a sailing excursion with Windward Sailing; an “Eating Scene” review of Brett’s Waterway Café; and much more. See you around the island!

Heron’s Cove Adventure Golf (904-261-6161), located at the Omni Resort, is set underneath a beautiful canopy of live oaks featuring 18 nautical-themed holes.

FUN AND GAMES Have you tried your hand at petanque? This fascinating game, which originated in France, has taken Amelia Island by storm. A petanque court is located downtown near the harbor and another can be found at Central Park. Petanque America (800-682-2557) can help you get started, and even help you find others to play with. At The Nature Center at the Omni Resort (904-2616161), join an experienced naturalist on a bike, Segway, or kayak tour discovering birds, turtles, edible plants, night creatures, and crabs. Several tours are designed for children and include educational crafts.

AMELIA ISLAND CYCLING OFFERS ORGANIZED BIKE TRIPS Each week on Thursday at 9 a.m. and Saturday at 8:30 a.m., Amelia Island Cycling Club hosts organized bicycle rides in and around Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island. All rides begin at Main Beach and are open to cyclists of all abilities. On any given ride, there might be faster groups and slower groups, and riders are classified in the following groups: A (18-21 mph), B (14-17 mph), C (up to 14 mph), and S (social ride, speed of the slowest rider in the group). The ride is approximately thirty miles, with rest stops along the way. The group loops back to the starting point at around ten miles before continuing the remaining twenty miles of the route. This allows riders to go at their own speed, and no one is required to go the entire thirty miles. Members of Amelia Island Cycling assure that no rider will be left behind. After the ride, cyclists may enjoy an optional lunch. Bicycle helmets are mandatory, as well as a bicycle in good working condition. Bicycle safety is an absolute must and safety tips are shared before the start of all rides. For more information, call Don Eipert at (904) 261-5160 or visit www. ameliaislandcycling.com.

Olivia Hoblit has been appointed the new General Manager at Seaside Amelia Inn. The hotel was purchased by Tru Hospitality of Texas, which is looking to expand its business throughout the state of Florida. Formerly the General Manager of Elizabeth Pointe Lodge, Hoblit is responsible for all aspects of the hotel’s business, including overseeing renovations. “Seaside Amelia Inn is a comfortable, affordable hotel, just steps from the beach via our private boardwalk, and it has something to offer the entire family,” says Hoblit. “We have 46 rooms and 16 staff members, a wonderful team to work with. With our second phase renovations happening in September, we will eventually have meeting space and a rooftop sun deck.” “All of our rooms are completely furnished in a comfortable coastal style. Each room is uniquely designed, some featuring a private balcony overlooking the ocean, pool, or with a sunset view,” says Hoblit. The hotel also offers several new amenities, such as the daily Hot & Tasty Southern Homestyle Breakfast with made-to-order pancakes, eggs, grits, and sausage. “I’m very excited about my new position here,” says Hoblit. “I’m so glad to be part of Seaside Amelia Inn.”

inner of the prestigious 2014 Shrimp Festival First Place Prize for Photography and the 2013 Wild Amelia Photo Contest, professional fine art portrait and wildlife photographer Steve Leimberg travels the world to seek out the beauty in what is too often unseen and passed by. His web site, www.UnSeenImages.com, is a collection of his best work. Amazingly, Leimberg has a learning disability that does not allow him to picture images in his mind. When he closes his eyes, the world goes black; he cannot see an image, or recreate something he has seen in the past. So he uses photography and his insight into places, people, objects, and nature to hold onto and recall images. “Photography stops the fleetingness of time, brings those images back to me, and allows me to creatively and artistically share my feelings about them with others,” says Leimberg. “What I like to show through my work is beauty. I do it through digitally painting the color, texture, lines, and shapes of those otherwise ‘unseen images’: the trees, birds, flowers, the moments in

life that move too fast, are too small or too far away to see, or the splendor that people don’t slow down enough to take in and savor.” Leimberg is keenly aware of the beauty of Amelia Island and uses his photography as a way to make people appreciate – and want to preserve – their natural world. Leimberg has created a unique style, which causes some people to ask, ‘Is it a photograph or is it a painting?’ “I’m trying to cross the line between painting and photography,” he says. “My photography is a way of grabbing people by the shoulders, shaking them, and saying, ‘Don’t lose this! Don’t let others pave this paradise and put up a parking lot,’” says Leimberg. “Save your trees, your birds, your beaches, your treasure – before it’s too late!” His fine art work is for sale in Fernandina Beach at the Island Art Association, The Plantation Guild and Gallery, Amelia SanJon Gallery, and the Book Loft. On First Coast Highway, it can be purchased at BarZin Restaurant, Gourmet Gourmet Restaurant, and Wines by Steve. For more information, call (904) 491-0474 or email him at steve@UnSeenImages.com.

arly McCall has been hanging out with trees for as long as he can remember. He graduated from North Carolina State University with a Master’s degree in forestry, with an emphasis on forest genetics. McCall worked for 36 years in Rayonier’s regeneration program before retiring to pursue his new passion in arboriculture. He became an International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist in 2010 and opened McCall Tree Health and Consulting LLC in 2012. With his background in both forestry and arboriculture, McCall is one the few individuals in the area who can identify specific tree problems and offer solutions other than removal. “Sometimes I’m asked to come out to see a client’s favorite tree. They might be afraid that the tree is dying, or maybe it’s become unsafe,” says McCall. “I offer them advice and possible treatments to improve tree health. It might have disease, boring insects; or it may just need nutrition or judicious pruning. The safety of trees is a high priority, so if testing shows decay in a tree is too extensive, removal may be recommended.” McCall assists with new construction projects by helping the property owner decide which trees should be retained and recommending measures to protect them during construction. Younger trees that receive appropriate care and pruning require less corrective pruning as they age. “Trees enhance the beauty of your landscape,” says McCall. “They cool your environment and increase the value of your property.” For more information, call (904) 557-3951 or visit www.McCallTree.com.

hen John Louis O’Day retired on Amelia Island in 1996, little did he know that in two short years, he would be diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Within four years of the diagnosis, O’Day would lose his life to this progressive and fatal disease, which slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow, and breathe. In 2002, O’Day left behind his wife, Ardith, their five children and twelve grandchildren, and many grieving friends and family members. O’Day and his family started coming to Amelia Island in 1973, when they began spending a glorious three-week vacation at Amelia Island Plantation which the family looked forward to every year. His youngest son, Mark, fondly remembers those early days. “We all fell in love with Amelia Island. My father worked for IBM, and we were living in France,” says Mark. “But all year we couldn’t wait for our Amelia Island trip. Eventually, our family bought a Club Villa at Amelia Island Plantation. After years of vacationing here, my siblings have continued on page 43.

aquatics on amelia Amelia Island’s three pool facilities offer ample opportunity to splash, dive, and cool off in the water when the weather warms up. BY JULIE SIMMONS

I

t’s a sunny, humid, feels-like-100-degrees Amelia Island summer day, and nothing looks more inviting than a sparkling blue swimming pool. Lucky for us, our community is full of options! The City of Fernandina Beach boasts two aquatics complexes, each with a standard pool and a kiddie pool. The Atlantic Recreation Center’s heated pool is available year-round, while the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center Pool is open during the summer. The third large pool facility on Amelia Island is the McArthur Family YMCA, which recently announced that its pool is now heated, joining the Atlantic Rec Center as an option for year-round aquatics. If you’re into lap swimming, any of these pools will suit your needs, and they each have designated lap lanes during public hours. Maybe you need a brush-up lesson? It’s available! “We are excited to welcome back our annual Masters Swim Program for all ages this July,” explains YMCA Sports & Aquatics Director Jenna Scott. “This is a chance for participants to work on breathing, endurance, and stroke development.” The Rec Center also has a Masters Program, and both facilities offer private lessons for children and adults to meet individual goals. Every summer, the pools broadcast the joyful noise of kids splashing and having fun. Sometimes a scream is heard when a toddler jumps into their first swimming lesson, but young lives are being protected by this important investment. The City and the YMCA offer group swimming lessons, which include parent/child options, and they’re each committed to no child being left behind. From July 7 through August 1, Waterproof Jacksonville invites kids ages 6-12 who qualify for free or reduced lunch to come take part in free lessons at the YMCA, and the Safe Kids program at the Rec Center offers free lessons to forty participants thanks to funding from the Ed Gaw Amelia Island Open Water Challenge Organization. Amelia Island’s pools also resound year-round with cheers for youth swim teams. The Fernandina Beach Stingrays of

the River City League practice at the Rec Center, as does the Yulee High School team. The YMCA hosts its First Coast Championship swim team, The Sailfish, for kids ages 5-18. “My daughter has been part of the Y’s team for five years,” smiles Cyd Teare. “The coaches teach the kids what team spirit is all about, while coaching each individual to improve his or her time—all while making it fun.” Finally, homeschoolers are invited to the Rec Center swim clinic, where competitive strokes are emphasized. One of my favorite times of the day at all the pools is the fun music of the Aqua Aerobics Classes. Both shallow and deep-water classes are on the schedule, and they are open to people of all ages. “I enjoy the camaraderie in the pool,” laughs Ben Shave, who participates in both the City and Y aerobics programs. “It’s great all-around exercise for me. It relieves the pressure on the joints, but it still gives a great workout.” If your teen is interested in becoming a lifeguard, both the Rec Center and the YMCA offer Lifeguard and Junior Lifeguard training that includes CPR instruction. Additionally, the Rec Center invites you to become PADI Scuba Certified each month, and it has an introductory scuba experience. All the pools are also available to rent for your private event. Amelia Island presents an array of options for the entire family each summer when it comes to aquatics, so get out that suit, pump up the SPF, and head over to one of the City pools or the YMCA to make a splash this year! Working at a similar conservation facility in southeastern Ohio, he served as an animal specialist and was responsible for some of the most imperiled species, such as rhinoceros, antelope, cheetahs, and African painted dogs. He is an alumnus of the Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leaders program and has traveled in Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Speeg wants to share his passion for inspiring conservation action and is currently coordinating camp programs for children. Partnering with a Montessori school in Jacksonville, the first pilot program was initiated the summer of 2013 for seven- and eightyear-olds. Not surprisingly, it was huge success, and more camps have been added. “White Oak is an amazing place to engage children in conservation and connect them with the plight of many of the species that share our world,” says Speeg. “Beyond the 27 species that are part of our conservation breeding programs, we also have 7,400 acres of natural Florida woodlands and wetlands to explore, because conservation most certainly starts at home.” White Oak Plantation is alive and well and eager to share its amazing story. As the camp brochure states, the program offers “experiential conservation education in a unique 7,400-acre refuge for people, animals, and ideas.” Public tours are offered regularly, but reservations must be made in advance. For times and pricing, call (904) 225-3396. For more information on White Oak’s outreach programs, summer camps and special programs, visit www.whiteoakwildlife.org and sign up for their newsletter.

Hope from page 29. since bought property here and we all became part of the island!” O’Day was an avid golfer and the entire family was very athletic. “We all played tennis and golf, we loved sports,” says Mark. “My father eventually became president of the Amelia Island Club in 1999, and he had so many friends here. It was only natural that after his passing we would want to hold a golf tournament in his honor.” But the family didn’t start the tournament right away. Mark contacted the ALS Association Florida Chapter to find out what their family and friends could do to raise money for the cause. They suggested getting involved in the annual Walk to D’Feet ALS in Jacksonville, which the family has been involved with each year since. But they wanted to do more, and that’s when Mark decided to start the yearly golf event to honor his father’s memory and raise money for the Florida ALS Chapter. That was ten years ago, and so far they have raised over $125,000. This year is expected to be one of their biggest events ever. The tournament will be held on Friday, August 1 at Long Point Amelia Island at The Amelia Island Club. Registration and Warm-Up Lunch Buffet will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A Shotgun Start is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., and followed at 5 p.m. by a Dinner Reception with raffle prizes, awards, and silent auction. All the proceeds from the event benefit the ALS Association Florida Chapter. “This tournament is an amazing event,” says Ardith. “One of the things that means so much to me since John’s passing is that our grandchildren can spend time talking to all the people who knew him. I feel that we are carrying on his legacy every year. Our good friends and family travel from all over the country, and even from Europe, to be here.” “Besides money to fund research, proceeds from the tournament also help families whose loved ones are suffering from the disease,” says Mark. “The outpouring from the community and our sponsors has been astonishing.” For more information on the tournament and how to help, visit www.alsgolfamelia.com.

heart-stopping hummingbirds Fast-growing vines like the Orange Trumpet are a great way to attract hummingbirds, one of nature’s true wonders. BY BETTY MORRELL

T

he heat has been turned up and it really feels like summer now! At this time of the year, we have to be vigilant with our plants, giving them the water, feeding them properly, and pruning them so they look and feel like new. Many people love to attract the elusive and beautiful hummingbird to their gardens, and many plants can serve that purpose. Vines are a great way to attract hummingbirds, and I love the attractive Orange Trumpet Vine (Campsis radicans). You can run this vine up a fence or trellis, or let nature take its course and allow it creep across the ground for a carpet of blooms. The Orange Trumpet can be grown in full sun to part shade. The striking flowers are three to four inches and trumpet-shaped. It is fast-growing and can grow twenty to forty feet. The Orange Trumpet vine is an old-time favorite. It is said that hummingbirds find it irresistible. The vine has dark, shiny green leaves, which are smothered in large, showy orange-scarlet trumpetshaped flowers from July to November. Humingbirds appear to collect the nectar and return year after year. This

hummingbird vine is a vigorous grower and will cover almost any kind of support, so use caution. It can become invasive, so it needs to be pruned. The best time to prune is in the spring as flowers bloom on the new growth. Radical pruning is suggested at that time. The Orange Trumpet Vine is drought-tolerant and it will grow in most soils. It can be grown in sun or part shade; however, the more sun it gets, the more its flowers will bloom. This vine also is available in yellow. Another good choice is the Cypress Vine (Ipomoea), a perennial in our area with tiny, scarlet-red tubular flowers. The flowers are about one-and-a-half inches long and flare out at the mouth into a five-pointed star. These vines can climb to twenty feet or more, but it is always a dainty, fragile vine, and not

at all aggressive. The leaves are three to four inches long and leather-like, finely divided into thread-like segments. They give the appearance of a feathery fern. The Cypress Vine makes a wonderful trellis cover for a privacy screen, which you would rather look at than through. It is an excellent source of nectar for both hummingbirds and butterflies. These vines are in the Morning Glory family, and they do best when well-watered. Other great plants thatattract a lot of hummingbirds and butterflies are: Pineapple Sage (Salvia elegans); Giant Blue Sage (Salvia guaranitica); Cypress Vine (Ipomoea quamoclit); Shrimp Plant (Justicia brande-geana); Mimose, or Silktree (Albizia julbrissin); Shrub Verbena (Lantana camara); Butterfly Bush (Buddleja davidii ), also known as Buddleia; Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus); Common Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea); Cigar Plant (Cuphea ignea). These are known as the Top 10 Exotic Hummingbird Plants. Good luck creating your own hummingbird garden! As always, please email me at bamorrell@aol.com with any questions. And Happy Gardening!

efore settling down in Jacksonville in 2003, Medardo Monzon referred to himself and his wife, Ana, as “corporate nomads,” since they had relocated ten times. Jacksonville had seemed like the perfect fit for this busy couple, until they purchased a condo on Amelia Island in 2005. “We loved Amelia Island,” says Medardo. “It has a slower pace, people are friendly, and you can speak to everyone personally here. Plus, we love nature, and the ocean.” The couple became so attached to the island that they decided to buy a beachfront cottage and adjoining lighthouse, with the intention of restoring both of the dwellings. But, within a few months, they realized that plan wasn’t practical. “When you start seeing the problems with an older house, you realize that it doesn’t make sense to preserve it,” explains

Medardo. “It took us about a year to make that decision and demolish the existing dwellings.” Working with local architect John Dodd, they came up with a five bedroom home that suited them perfectly. Medardo and Ana then met builder Dale Cole of Cole Builders at a local patio show and invited him to present a proposal for their modern, coastal home. They moved into their new home just six months ago. Medardo and Ana have an international consulting business and they needed a space in the house to host seminars for their clients. The first-floor area features two bedrooms, a full kitchenette, and a walkout to a beautifully landscaped relaxation pool, outdoor shower, and a picture-perfect view of

the Atlantic Ocean. On the second floor, there are two more bedrooms, Ana’s study, the kitchen and living room, a laundry room, and a master bath that includes an enormous closet and exercise room. A spacious porch looks out over the ocean, and from the living room the couple can hear the waves crashing on the beach. The third floor has Medardo’s office, bath, closets, and another walk-out porch. Ana is from Argentina, Medardo from Colombia. Besides their four children and five grandchildren, they have a large family who visit frequently. Their home has been designed to allow all their guests to have privacy when they wish, and then gather in the great room when they want to socialize.

An outdoor kitchen and shower let everyone enjoy the beach and pool without sandy feet gracing their floors. Ana is fond of flowers and loves to garden; it is her touch that adds color and beauty to the outdoor landscaping. “I wanted a wild area outside, with a small section of grass for our dogs,” said Ana. “I chose plants and flowers that are indigenous to our area. They grow beautifully and don’t need excessive water.” Ana and Medardo enjoy walking on the beach, biking, and visiting local restaurants. “Amelia Island has excellent restaurants,” notes Medardo. “Ana and I love to go out to dinner. We’ve met many new people around the island in the short few months we’ve lived here. That’s one of the things that we love about living here.”

Medardo travels quite a bit with the Monzons’ consulting business, called EMPOWER LT. EMPOWER LT enables leaders and teams to uncover their untapped potential and transform themselves in order to reach higher levels of performance. Most of the couple’s clients are outside of the United States. The Monzons work with organizations to create customized solutions to their needs through seminars, workshops, and individual sessions. While Medardo travels, Ana stays home to take care of the other end of the business, and watch after the dogs. When Medardo returns home on weekends, he is delighted that they made the decision to build their coastal home on Amelia Island. “We enjoyed our time in Jacksonville, but this home is where we truly belong.”

Brett’s

WATERWAY CAFE

An Amelia Island icon, Brett Carter’s cafe continues to impress with inspired cuisine and a front-row seat to some amazing sunsets. BY KAREN MILLER PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

A

few weeks ago, the Amelia Islander Magazine held a special photo contest on our Facebook page called “Where on Amelia?” and the winner was Jerry Torchia! His prize was dinner out with me, and the event took a special turn when I found out that it was also his wedding anniversary. So I invited his wife, Mary Lynn, to come along, and the three of us enjoyed a marvelous evening at Brett’s Waterway Café. After 52 years of marriage, the Torchias had a lot to celebrate, and our server Wade suggested we start with a glass of Dave Matthews Dreaming Tree, a white “everyday” wine that was far from ordinary, while we nibbled on some starters. Chef Brett Carter prepared us a platter of appetizers to sample, and they were all out of this world. Little brined green olives, Crab Louie salad, Hummus with Pesto, and Pimento Cheese were just a few of the wonderful offerings we were in store for that evening. Chef Brett makes these incredible parmesan chips for dipping, and an amazing flatbread covered with herbs and seeds. The crab salad was probably my favorite, if it was even possible to choose, with capers, red onion, and lump crab meat. We also sampled a crab cake that Jerry really liked, with a citrus Remoulade sauce and homemade cole slaw. I think Mary’s favorite was the pimento cheese. A little something to delight each of us on this special day! Wade brought us a glass of Belleglos Pinot Noir Blanc, with rich, ripe strawberry and green apple aromas, which paired well with our next course, Marinated Mozzarella & Tomato Salad. This salad is loaded with all sorts of goodies – Mozzarella

cheese, tomatoes, arugula, artichokes, hearts of palm, and citrus balsamic vinaigrette. We also enjoyed everyone’s favorite, Southern-Style Biscuits, which are rich and buttery, fluffy, and unmistakably homemade. But there was more to come for this special anniversary dinner, as Chef Brett treated us to three amazing entrees. For me, Pan Seared Scallops with Anson Mills cheese grits, braised pork belly, asparagus, and beurre blanc. For Mary, an 8 oz. Beef Tenderloin with asparagus and Yukon Gold mashed potatoes. And for Jerry, a special surprise – Low Country Boil! We shared our various dishes and everything was superb. I especially loved the sweetness of the scallops with the richness of the pork belly. The tenderloin was medium rare and very tender, and the low country boil featured Mayport shrimp, sausage, clams, crawfish, corn, red potatoes, and cocktail sauce. A bowl of sweet and salty collard greens was the perfect accompaniment. Jerry and I also sampled a glass of Estancia Meritage, a deep crimson, velvety red wine. While we finished up our entrees, Chef Brett came out to chat with us, bearing gifts of Crème Brulee, Flourless Chocolate Torte, and a special coffee with four secret liqueurs stirred in, topped with whipped cream. As usual, Brett’s Waterway Café presents a joyous dining experienced as inspired as Brett himself, a gathering place with excellent food and service, and the best view on Amelia Island. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, featuring a full bar and an extensive wine list. For more information or to make a reservation, call (904) 261-2660.

smooth sailing With a wide array of charters and sailing classes, Windward Sailing offers relaxing excursions on the waters around Amelia. BY KAREN MILLER PHOTO COURTESY OF WINDWARD SAILING

his may sound strange for a woman who lives by the sea, but I have never been on a sailboat! And since sailing is on my bucket list, I figured there’s no time like the present to get out on the water. I’ve heard that sailing on Amelia Island is outstanding all year long, so I called Tony Jones at Windward Sailing a booked a tour. Windward Sailing offers charters and overnight trips, but it’s also an ASA certified school with locations in Amelia Island and the St. Johns River, Jacksonville. Jones purchased Windward Sailing in 2005, with the encouragement of his wife, Cindy, who knew it was his lifelong dream to run a sailing business. I met Tony at the harbor one afternoon for a two-hour tour of Amelia and Cumberland Island. Captain Tony motored us out of the harbor, shut off the engine, hoisted the sails, and we were off! I’ve been on lots of boat trips and sailing is a completely different experience. It’s so peaceful and serene. The boat glides along the water silently, except for the sound of the wind as it hits the sails. Because there’s no motor, there’s much less wake, and, when we left the harbor, the water was very still. Tony pointed out that flat water doesn’t mean there aren’t any currents and noted that experienced captains have an advantage when maneuvering a sailboat on the Amelia River. Tony shares the history of Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach with his guests, while he points out various birds and landmarks along the way. Within only a few minutes, we spotted a pod of dolphins, who love to follow the sailboats. “Dolphins and whales see the keel of the boat, and, because the boat doesn’t have an engine, they are drawn to the boat out of curiosity,” says Tony. Just a few days earlier, Tony spotted a huge Right Whale on one of his trips—an event of a lifetime, even for an experienced boat captain. Windward Sailing offers charters on the beautiful waterways of Fernandina Beach and Cumberland Island, and on the Atlantic Ocean, or you can sail from Jacksonville. They also offer overnight trips that include dinner, where Tony is not only the boat captain, but chef and dishwasher. When I inquired about an overnight trip, Tony suggested an evening departure with anchorage, dinner, and sleeping spaces for four at a very reasonable price. He also offers trips to St. Marys for lunch or dinner, and even all the way to Jacksonville and back. As we sailed toward Cumberland Island, we saw the island’s wild horses, including a tiny colt that was born just days before. A submarine boat came through, headed to the base in Kingsland, which meant a sub would be on its way in or out of the river soon. On our return, Tony told me about his sailing classes, which include keelboat sailing, coastal cruising, coastal navigation, and bareboat cruising. “We have people from all over the world who come to Amelia Island just to learn how to sail,” says Tony. For Tony, running a sailing business is the dream of a lifetime. Sailing was my dream, too, and a trip with Windward Sailing made it even more special.
