TAKE A LITTLE OF AMELIA HOME

I just followed one simple rule. Never judge any decision by what happens today. Imagine yourself years from now, surrounded by your children, your children’s children. Will you be proud of what you’ve accomplished? I have an advisor who thinks the same way. Who understands that building wealth isn’t a temporary act.

our old favorites.

Every July, we at the Amelia Islander Magazine publish our annual “Fun in the Summer Sun” guide, in which we compile our list of some of the many and varied (and often exhilarating!) activities available to residents and visitors alike on Amelia Island during the summer season. This issue is always fun to put together because we too get to discover all the new and exciting things there are to do on the island, as well as highlight a lot of our old favorites. We don’t want to miss out on all the summer fun that people visiting Amelia Island enjoy! Like everyone, for much of the year we busy ourselves with work, family, hobbies, church activities, team sports with the kids, etc., and it’s easy to forget that some of the most beautiful beaches in Florida are just down the road. We don’t want to think about how long it’s been since we just dropped everything and drove to the beach for an impromptu swim. And there’s so much more to enjoy than that simple pleasure! Once we break free from the usual routine, then the wheels really start turning and the imagination cascades from kayaking and sailing to surfing and fishing, boat cruises, golfing, horseback riding on the beach, even skydiving, as well as a little leisurely shopping or dining out at restaurants we don’t get to often enough. There are so many ways to let the extraordinary into the ordinary of our everyday lives. Enjoying a good vacation—one that truly refreshes body and soul—requires experiencing something new, engaging in a little physical activity, be it swimming, biking, or something more strenuous, as well as finding a little space for some quiet time. Thankfully, Amelia Island offers all those opportunities for rejuvenation, and then some, whether you live here or you’re here for a much-needed vacation at the beach. Of course, we don’t want you to get so caught up in chasing new adventures that you forget to just kick back on the beach with a good book. (I don’t really think we need to tell you that.) And while you’re relaxing, we hope you’ll enjoy the rest of this month’s Islander, which includes an article on the intriguing new sculpture in downtown Fernandina Beach; a feature on the dedicated Amelia Island lifeguards that keep our beaches safe; and an update on 8 Flags Playscapes, which celebrated the one-year anniversary of its popular Pirate Playground by proposing to transform Egans Creek Park on Atlantic Avenue; a “Backyard Adventure” on the waters around Amelia with Amelia Boat Club & Rentals; an “Eating Scene” review of Sliders Seaside Grill; and much more. See you around the island!

ur coastal community comes alive during the summer months, jam-packed with fun activities and great entertainment. Here on Amelia Island, summer lasts longer than any other place on the earth. With its temperate climate and cool ocean breezes, our island paradise is a favorite summer vacation destination— and the fun continues into fall and winter! Summer is the time of the year when we turn off the

television, put away the video games, and head out to the beach, the golf course, or even the spa. When most of Florida is suffering with summer’s high temperatures, Amelia Island is the place where even Southerners seek respite from the heat, and to find a little fun under the summer sun. No matter what your interests are, you’re sure to find something new and exciting to occupy these long, glorious summer days!

OSPREY VILLAGE NAMES SILVER PEN SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

RESIDENCE INN WINS TRIO OF MARRIOTT AWARDS At the recent Marriott International General Manager’s Conference, the Residence Inn Amelia Island was honored with three prestigious awards. The hotel’s General Manager, Bob Hartman, was chosen as the Service Excellence General Manager of the Year out of 675 Residence Inn properties worldwide. Criteria for the award are based on the general manager’s focus on exceptional customer service, including outstanding service stories. The team was also chosen by Residence Inn Culture Council and other Marriott properties across the world for the Most INNspiring Story of the Year for 2014. This award was in recognition of the team’s role in hosting the 2014 Best Buddies Prom, an event held at the Residence Inn for local teenagers with disabilities. The Residence Inn Amelia Island also earned an award as a Marriott Platinum Hotel for Overall Guest Satisfaction for the third year since the hotel opened in 2009. This award is based on consistently delivering the kind of professional service that guests write about for the hotel’s surveys. “We work hard every day to deliver exceptional experiences to our guests,” says Hartman. “We will continue to deliver the caliber of hospitality that visitors to Amelia Island expect and deserve.”

Osprey Village at Amelia Island Plantation recently gave away $3,750 in cash prizes to four winners of the retirement community’s Silver Pen Writing Competition. After the awards ceremony, the winners and their families enjoyed a reception with community members and staff. Osprey Village started the scholarship in 2012 with two Left to right: Casee Yarborough, purposes in mind. The primary goal was to help Nicholas LeBlanc, Ryan Lusardi, local high school students attain their dream of and Matthew Lanaghan. attending college through financial assistance. The second motive was to help the students consider viewpoints of multiple generations through writing on topics relating to older and younger generations. Osprey Village’s Executive Director Dana Sargent said the topic, which asked students to take on the role of city planner and find innovative ways to utilize the senior population for the benefit of the community, is one way to bridge the communication gap between generations. “The best side effect of The Silver Pen is that the young writers enter into a mutual understanding and respect for the seniors in society,” says Sargent. “We are excited to see how this scholarship program will grow.” This year’s winners are: Matthew Lanaghan, first place; Ryan Lusardi, second place; Nicholas LeBlanc, third place; and Casee Yarborough, fourth place.

n Amelia Island, William Maurer is well known for his island watercolors depicting the town of Fernandina Beach, with its quaint streets, harbor, and shrimp boats. These images are featured in his book, Sketches of Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach, The Mark of William Maurer. In the reflections of his book, Maurer expresses, in a quiet way, his inner emotions and love of these subjects. In 2009, his design was selected by a jury to represent Amelia Island’s best known event, the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, in its annual poster. The following year, he was one of two judges for the juried art show at the same event. In January this year, he judged the prestigious 39th annual show of the Miniature Art Society of Florida. With close to nine hundred entries in all mediums in that show, Maurer enjoyed the challenge. Prior to moving to Amelia Island in 1979, Kathleen Maurer attended the Ringling Art School in Sarasota. Currently, she teaches acrylic painting, sharing her knowledge and introducing beginners to the medium. Her inspirational manner of teaching motivates students to return time and

time again. Offering two classes per week, she believes that painting is the best distraction, offering relief from stress, all while having fun together. The Maurers visit France every year, having resided in Cannes for the past twelve years, where they draw much of their inspiration. Coupled with his love of books, William is fluent in French and a student of history, leading to the development of his formidable skills. Maurer’s watercolors are rendered in the style of Impressionism. Maurer’s close friend, Neal Coleman, referred to the artist as “the master of perspective,” which ensures that his home portraits and commissions never disappoint. Maurer operated his own architectural offices in Casablanca, Morocco for ten years, and has enjoyed painting as an extension of the architectural experience. Together with Kathleen, they formed Maurer Fine Art, and their paintings, prints, and book can be found at Eight Flags Antique Market, The Book Loft, Amelia Island Coffee Shop, and A1A Antiques. For more information, call Kathleen and William at (904) 261-8276 or visit their website at www.MaurerFineArt.com.

each Rentals and More & The Beach Store are celebrating their fifth year in Fernandina Beach, providing visitors and locals alike with everything they need for a fun time on and around Amelia Island. Owners Melanie Baker and Dean Root had always wanted a vacation-type business and they found the company in January 2011. “We look forward to the continued growth of our business and meeting more of our neighbors,” says Melanie. “We have enjoyed meeting people from all over the world and we have so many new friends! Dean is meticulous in maintaining all of our equipment so we can offer the best on the island. We pride ourselves in offering fantastic service for all our customers, and the very best gear.” “If you’re into experiencing the island on two wheels, you might want to consider renting one of our cruiser-style bikes,” says Melanie. “I suggest taking a cruiser to the Amelia Island Greenway, and then maybe onto the Amelia Bike Trail, and even beach riding at low tide. It’s a great way to see the island!” Beach Rentals and More also offers bait & tackle, rash guards, sweatshirts, sun shirts, jackets, sunglasses, hats, sunscreen, tee shirts, flip flops, kites, beach towels, sundries, cold drinks, snacks, post cards, sharks teeth, coolers, and more. “You can even set up a surfing lesson or stand-up paddle board lesson,” says Melanie. Local residents receive 10% off rentals or items in The Beach Store. The store is located at 2021 South Fletcher Avenue. For more information, call (904) 310-6124 or visit www.beachrentalsand more.com.

hen Theresa Duncan and her father, Todd, decided to go into business together, they wanted to fill a need in the community and do something they were passionate about. It didn’t take long for them to realize that Amelia Island needed a toy store. “My dad wasn’t quite ready to retire, nor did he want to grow up,” laughs Theresa. “We both love toys, and we both have a strong opinion about how important educational toys are in developing social and motor skills.” She named the store Villa Villekulla after Pippi Longstocking’s house. Pippi was Theresa’s favorite childhood character, and she wanted to pay homage to the Fernandina Beach house where the Pippi Longstocking movie was filmed. Theresa’s 10-year-old son, Adrian, also plays an integral role in the store. “Adrian is our director of toy development,” says Theresa. “He is in charge of testing the toys and setting up our displays.” And if you think Villa Villekulla is only for kids, you haven’t spent much time in the store. “Our toys are for ‘kids’ from age 1 to 100,” says Theresa. “There’s nothing that brings me more joy than watching a 60-year-old man laughing and playing with our marble runs!” Villa Villekulla features quality educational, open-ended, outdoor, and eco-friendly toys and games for every kid and budget. “There are so many quality toys, but we try to stock toys that are affordable, with the best play value,” says Theresa. The store is located at 5 So. 2nd Street. For more information, call (904) 432-8291 or visit www.villavillekullatoys.com.

Through the Arts are Alive Project, art in public places is blooming in Fernandina Beach, transforming the cityscape with whimsy and color. BY JULIE SIMMONS • PHOTO BY SHERRY GARBARINI

“What exactly are those totem poles?”

I

f you’ve strolled down Centre Street lately, you may have asked yourself that very question after you noticed the transformation of the pocket park on the south side of the street, which had been home to only weeds and benches. That’s precisely how the Arts Are Alive Project wants you to react. “The sculpture brings smiles to faces, questions to minds, and a sense of wonder to the child within all of us,” says local artist Rebecca McDannold, the representative of the Island Art Association (IAA) to Arts & Culture Nassau. Over 24 groups and 50 artists decorated the fence posts, repurposing them into unique totem poles. The left side of the brick walkway dividing the park features a tall, lighthouse-crowned totem pole, which represents the annual Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival. It is detailed with a shrimp boat, shrimp, and pirates. The right side of the park has a tall totem pole designed by the Island Art Association, which is capped with a locally hand-made pottery bowl detailed with starfish, turtles, and images of the coastal life of the island. Both sides have a circle of smaller totem poles surrounding the large pole in the center. The collection of totem poles was inspired by a visit to North Carolina by artist Sharon Haffey. “I saw these beautiful, interesting peace poles and began to brainstorm about what we might create in Fernandina Beach,” shares Haffey. “The idea of the collection is to enhance our city through arts, while sharing color and happiness to locals and visitors alike.” “The installation is a reflection of our community at large,” reflects Denise Murphy, a local award-winning glass artist. “It represents Amelia Island’s varied artistic culture and artistically rich community.” Individual artists and

groups from every medium of the arts fashioned a totem pole, including Amelia Community Theatre, Friends of the Library (FOL), the Amelia Island Jazz Festival, and the Quilters’ Guild. A plaque in the park recognizes each group who supported the community effort. “When people view our sculpture, they begin to understand the depth and breadth of the artistic expression that exists on our island,” explains McDannold. “As artists, producing the sculpture was a wonderful way to contribute to the community through our individual expressions, and be part of the artist community as well.” The artist community in Nassau County is thriving today, and credit is due to the City of Fernandina Beach for encouraging its growth through Arts & Culture Nassau, a county-wide arts council. In 2012, an ordinance was passed to encourage public artistic expression. It reads, “Art in public continued on page 45.

ne day, a mother came to my stand, frantic about her missing daughter. I knew the current was running north, so I took off that direction. A halfmile later, I found her walking, looking confused. I knelt and asked her if she was lost, and I told her I was a lifeguard and would take her back to her mom. She immediately took my hand. Returning the girl was such a rewarding feeling; that’s what makes me proud to be part of Ocean Rescue,” says lifeguard Clay Hewitt. With lots of visitors and novice ocean swimmers on miles and miles of beach, Amelia Island’s lifeguards are the essential component in keeping beachgoers safe. Each season, approximately forty guards patrol the beaches from Shrimp Festival weekend through Labor Day. This year, beach attendance is above the usual monthly averages, making the work of the guards that much more important. “Ocean Rescue is arguably the only division of our department that has the full opportunity to be proactive and avert the loss of life through preventive action,” explains

Deputy Chief of Emergency Medical Services Fino Murallo of the Ocean Rescue Division of the Fernandina Beach Fire Department. In May, the average preventive actions per day was forty. “More than likely, each saved loss of life or injury.” Amelia Island’s beaches have beautiful low tides, but this makes for more dangerous water. “Our coverage area poses a higher increase for the development of rip currents due to the major difference in tides,” confirms Murallo. The tidal variance creates extreme currents, where water is channeled and flows away from the shore. Lifeguard Alec Cutajar, 18, who guards with his brothers, Spender, 16, and Nathan, 21, suggest swimmers look for churned up sand in the water, which often indicates a rip current. “Our rip current risk, coupled with this year’s high winds, have made the ocean waters very dangerous,” reiterates Nathan. Lifeguards whistle or blow air horns to warn if swimmers are entering a rip current. If this happens, swim parallel to the beach continued on page 71.

t’s hard to believe it is one year since Pirate Playground opened. “We are amazed at the positive reviews and feedback we receive from visitors to Pirate Playground,” smiles Trey Warren, longtime volunteer and vice president of 8 Flags Playscapes, Inc., the non-profit organization behind Pirate Playground. “The project has exceeded all expectations. We truly live in a wonderful, generous community.” Many in the community donated time, money, and manpower to make this unique project a reality. “Reflecting on the success of Pirate Playground, our team decided, why stop working when we have such a great opportunity?” explains Aaron Morgan, founder and president of 8 Flags Playscapes, which is now embarking on a new project. “Egan’s Creek Park on Atlantic Avenue is an obvious opportunity with great potential, particularly because of its location on the creek.” “Ever since my own children were young, I’ve driven by Egan’s Creek Park and thought, what a shame to see such a big field that hardly anyone uses,” says 8 Flags Playscapes treasurer Sharyl Wood. With design help from board member Benjamin Morrison of Cotner Associates, Inc. Architects, the 8 Flags Playscapes team is ready to give the park a total makeover. The redesign includes activities for people of all ages to enjoy. “We want to maximize the space and build structures that are accessible to people of all abilities, just like Pirate Playground,” says Aaron. “A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of meeting a young boy at Pirate Playground who was in his own hand-crafted wheel chair. To see him playing in the sand with the other kids, working those sensory skills, and then playing musical instruments. It was amazing! His mom said, ‘Nowhere else can he do this,’” shares volunteer and committee member Lynn Tennille. “The accessibility focus is the facet of our work that makes it different and special,” confirms Trey. A centerpiece component of the new space will be a quarter-mile fit trail that will be accessible even to wheelchairs. Along the trail will be universally accessible workout stations, like bench press and shoulder raise stations that even someone using a wheelchair can utilize. Other design features will include an accessible bird watching platform, fishing dock, restrooms, and a yoga garden. The existing baseball field will be rejuvenated, and the multicontinued on page 45.

And public is loving it. “For visitors, our historic downtown is made memorable not only for its architecture and quaintness, but also because of public art displays like the totem project,” confirms Murphy. “It becomes part of our identity. People stop, reflect, and enjoy these colorful expressions. I see people posing for pictures all the time. What a compliment!” “I really wanted to see a project in response to the City’s support of art in public places,” says Haffey, who was then the IAA representative to the council. “The pocket park seemed the ideal location. It was a dreary spot in the center of the city, with high traffic. It’s transformation into a happy, fun space welcoming to families demonstrates to the community the power of art. Hopefully, others will grasp the vision and invent ways to enhance our beautiful island through the arts!” If you are interested in learning more about Island Art Association (islandart.org), Arts & Culture Nassau (artsandculturenassau. com), Arts are Alive, or how to get involved, contact rebecca.mcDannold@gmail.com.

In addition to telling the story of our history, the unique exhibitions express what’s important to the contributing artist or group of artists. “As a board member of Friends of the Library, a former educator, and avid reader, l believe that a literate society is a necessity,” explains Vickie Maley, artist and exhibiting member of IAA. “I chose a theme based on the history and identity of the island: beaches, pirates, treasure, art, and, of course, literacy, to depict the FOL mission.”

The crown jewel of the project will be a universally accessible kayak launch into the creek. “The idea of a ramp for kayaks is not new, but the willingness of our community to come together and work with the City to make the idea a reality, this is new. And we have a proven model for it in Pirate Playground,” notes Trey. Sharyl is thrilled about the new park, crediting her nephew, who has spina bifida, for her inspiration. “He has a hard

time walking longer distances, especially on rough ground,” says Sharyl. “As with others in his circumstance, his great desire is to participate like everyone else. Anything we can do to make venues— like our parks—universally accessible allows one and all to enjoy them without having to accept the label ‘handicapped.’” “8 Flags Playscapes is real people making a real difference in our community,” says Lynn. “We are proud of what we’ve accomplished at Pirate Playground, and the awesome news is that 8 Flags Playscapes has another chance to work together with the City of Fernandina Beach to do it again!” The budget for Egan’s Creek Park makeover is $330,000. Thus far, $50,000 has been raised, with thousands more through in-kind donations. Additionally, the project has applied for partnership with the City and is waiting to hear if another $150,000 may be granted. splendid specimens If you want to add vibrant color to your landscape this year, don’t miss foliage specimens like Tsuma Gaki and a new hibiscus called Midnight Marvel. BY BETTY MORRELL

A

s we enter the hot time of the year, our gardens will need some TLC. Many annuals will give up without adequate water, and perennials will start to wilt and brown. Be sure to dead head the annuals and prune some of the leggy perennials. I came across the perfect foliage specimen for year-round interest in your garden: Tsuma Gaki, a Japanese maple. Tsuma Gaki (Acer palmatum) has a unique multi-season appeal. In the fall, it exhibits the pure crimson leaves for which Japanese maples are so coveted, while in the summer, the leaves are lush and green. In spring, Tsuma Gaki unfurls palmate leaves with a thick, crimson border and a pure green heart. The fivefingered leaves tipped in red produce a striking display, giving Tsuma Gaki its name, which means “painted nails”. This small spreading tree has an upright habit and can reach ten feet at maturity, with the same width. Tsuma Gaki makes a superb container choice with its bushy, spreading growth adding vibrant color to your landscape. This plant appreciates shelter from the hottest

afternoon sun. Give it morning sun, average water, and rich, neutral soil. Everyone loves hibiscus, and I have come across a new one: Midnight Marvel (Moscheutos). Midnight Marvel earns its name with every leaf and flower it sets. The darkest Rose Mallow yet – its foliage is even more violet-purple than Kopper King – it is a standout specimen in any setting. After its brilliant purple show in spring and summer, the leaves turn a fiery orange for fall. But the foliage is just part of its glory. It also sets huge, deep red blooms from midsummer until frost, simply covering itself in color for three months of the year. The handsome, maple- shaped leaves on this fast-growing bush reach nearly a foot long, and are abundantly borne on this well-branched imposing

perennial, which measures five feet high by six feet wide. Midnight Marvel is an excellent choice for a specimen plant or an accent planting or border standout. The color refuses to green out in summer, even in fiery heat. By mid-summer, the plant is studded with long, elegantly twisted buds, which open to beautiful veined carmine-red blooms nine-to-ten inches wide. A true red hibiscus is rare, and Midnight Marvel offers a dark, pleasing shade of crimson that sets it apart. With the first run of cooler fall weather, the foliage turns brilliant shades of orange, remaining on the plant for many weeks before dropping. This adds a whole new dimension to the color palette, the red blooms combining boldly with the orange leaves. Midnight Marvel is native to the southeast United States, needing only heat and sun to grow its best. A lowmaintenance plant that is very longblooming and colorful, it is a must-have for the garden. If you have any questions, be sure to email me at bamorrel@aol.com. Until next issue, Happy Gardening!

fter living in Lake Tahoe, California, where the last two winters were record years—with eight hundred-plus inches of snow—it’s a beautiful thing to open the door and see the ocean as my backyard,” laughs John Evans, who recently renovated an oceanfront beach cottage. John grew up three hours north of Amelia Island in Vienna, Georgia, and he was ready to move back to the southeast a few years ago. Fernandina Beach landed at the top of the family’s list of favorites in the region. “It’s a great small town, not too commercialized, with an

inviting community that includes good schools for my kids,” says John. “We love all of the outdoor activities, bike trails, and, of course, the ocean.” Last June, the Evans bought this beach bungalow and began renovating it with help from John’s old college roommate. “There were lots of walls and little rooms,” John remembers. Asa Gillette of Gillette & Associates, Inc. consulted on the engineering side, and the trio decided to open up the series of choppy rooms making up the kitchen,

dining, and living space into a single, large area. In the master bedroom, a similar design was utilized, turning a tiny bedroom with no view of the ocean into a spacious suite that includes a sitting area with a front-row view of the surf. Susan Dowling of Susan Dowling Interior Design created an energetic, retro-style island flair for the home. “We had so much fun bringing 1950s chic into a 2015 cottage,” says Susan. “Working with bright blues, limes, and oranges, the coastal palate bursts with

John was committed to keeping as many original features of the home as possible. The fireplace is authentic, with

The cottage floors were a collection of original wood, carpet, and tiles, and the team decided it would be cool to do allover painted wood. Fernandina Beach home in the Historic District. “When we refinished that house, I saved this door,” John remembers. “I decided to sand it, paint it orange, and use it in the cottage, but after sanding, it looked so cool, I just hung it in its rustic state.” A smart leverage of a small space, it serves as a sliding door to the petite bathroom. Arguably the most intriguing detail of the home is that it’s a two-for-one deal! The primary family space is the two-bedroom upstairs. But if you take a walk downstairs, passing the fire pit

with inviting lime-green Adirondack chairs, you enter the downstairs cottage, complete with two extra bedrooms, a full mini-kitchen, and a sunroom John created by erecting a wall between a bedroom and the kitchen. Last October, the redesign was complete, and John has been enjoying life in a cottage. “I sleep with the windows open, relax to the sound of the waves, and then, at sunrise, walk my dog, Juno, in the sand,” says John, confirming that having the ocean as your backyard on Amelia Island is pretty special.

Sliders SEASIDE GRILL With its oceanfront tiki bar and Caribbean vibe, Sliders is an island favorite that has been serving great food and drink for generations. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

S

liders Seaside Grill is Fernandina Beach’s only oceanfront tiki bar, located steps from the beach on South Fletcher Ave. It has deep roots on Amelia Island, opening in 1945 as a traditional American roadhouse. The restaurant has changed and grown throughout the years, and it is one of my favorite beachfront eateries. I recently invited my friend Cindy to join me at Sliders for a late lunch. I had heard that Sliders had updated their menu, and I was eager to see what new items Chef Brennan Pickren was creating in the kitchen. We began our meal with some bar drinks. Although I’m usually a wine drinker, Sliders is known for their creative craft cocktails, so I always like to try a new drink when I visit the restaurant. Cindy ordered a Sliders Slammer, the restaurant’s signature cocktail, containing gin, vodka, Triple Sec, light rum, dark rum, and a secret blend of fruit juices. Wow, that cocktail really packs a punch! I went a little lighter and ordered a virgin Strawberry Colada. It was out of this world, a cross between a strawberry daiquiri and a pina colada, with all those tropical pineapple and coconut flavors, layered beautifully in an icy glass. While we were sipping our drinks, we visited with Sliders’ General Manager Cason Zylinski, and Director of Catering

Nigel Teare. The two talked about their new offerings, including specialty tacos, low country boil, lobster mac and cheese, and new burger varieties. We began our lunch with Sliders’ most popular appetizer, Crab Cake with house-made Remoulade Sauce. The crab cake is so delicate and perfectly cooked, and loaded with lots of lump crab. It’s served atop a bed of arugula, with spicy, creamy Remoulade, and a grilled lemon, which I squeezed over the crab cake. So delicious! Then Cason suggested we sample Fried Avocado, which is normally served in a taco with black bean salsa and hummus, served to us by Chef William. This dish is called a “Hippie Chic Taco,” but our version was served without the taco shell so we could really experience the deepfried avocado. Making deep-fried avocados is no easy feat, so I was very impressed with how perfectly they came out – super crispy on the outside, and creamy and melt-y on the inside. Cindy and I then shared Sliders’ Chimi Churri Steak, created and served by Chef Brennan. This was an amazing dish of melt-in-your-mouth top sirloin steak, marinated in zesty chimi churri sauce and served medium rare with grilled plantains. I loved the combination of savory flavors from the beef and sauce paired with the sweetness of the tender plantains. And speaking of sweetness, who wouldn’t love a decadent dessert after all our wonderful menu choices! Chef Brennan brought us Death by Chocolate, a chocolate chip brownie with chocolate sauce, crumbled chocolate Heath bar, ice cream, whipped cream, strawberries, and mint. I loved this dessert, and I can picture myself coming by Sliders again soon, just to order dessert. Completely renovated with a Caribbean theme in 2003, Sliders Seaside Grill offers top-quality food and service. Their dining rooms, lounge, and oceanfront patio offer unique settings for fine food and beverages, and their staff is proud to be serving its fifth generation of guests! Standing Guard continued from page 37. until the water calms. To help beachgoers understand ocean conditions, lifeguards use warning flags, with red indicating high hazard. “Sadly, we suffered a loss this year in an unguarded area,” reports Alec. “We rushed to the scene, and thankfully we were able to retrieve two survivors. My advice is to always swim in a guarded area.” Ocean Rescue maintains lifeguard stands at Burney Park, Main Beach, North End Park, Peter’s Point, Scott Road, and Seaside Park. Additionally, it patrols twelve miles of beach from Fort Clinch to the south end of Amelia Island. “Since this incident, we’ve increased our patrols of non-guarded areas,” Spencer says. The team uses a variety of rescue equipment, including kayaks, jet skis, and ATVs. Amelia Island’s lifeguards are well trained and meet the qualifications set forth by the United States Lifesaving Association. “We complete in-service training and exercise during our shifts to stay in shape,” says Spencer. In Amelia Island, we are blessed with a team of guards with a strong kinship. “The staff’s relationships are the strongest I’ve seen,” says Murallo. “Family members guard together, including the three Cutajar brothers, a set of twins, and a brother/sister team. Our group hangs together on and off-duty, and these relationships are important because our guards understand that we rely heavily on one another for a successful and safe rescue when required.”

On the Water

For a hassle-free day on the water, Amelia Boat Club & Rentals offers a variety of cruising and fishing boats, as well as waverunners. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTOS BY SHERRY GARBARINI

I

t’s been said that the first best day of your life is when you buy your boat, and the second best day is when you sell it. I love the idea of owning a boat, but when I go boating with friends, I’m only seeing the fun time on the water, not all the expense and maintenance. So when Monty Kitchen from Amelia Boat Club & Rentals invited me and my friend, Sherry, for a boating excursion, how could we refuse? Amelia Boat Club & Rentals has a variety of boats, including Boston Whalers, Sea Rays, Harris Tritoons, and Yamaha Waverunners. As a member of the club, you are welcome to use any of the boats you wish. Members pay a one-time enrollment fee, plus monthly dues, and they have unlimited access to all of the boats, including water toys, (tubes, knee boards, skis) and fishing rods. Monty and his wife, Capprice, take all their members out for a special safety outing, where members learn how to maneuver around the waters of Amelia and Cumberland Islands, and after that, they’re on their way! Monty welcomed us aboard one of the Tritoons on a weekday morning. We left from the Amelia Yacht Basin and headed north on the Intracoastal Waterway to the Amelia River and then onto Cumberland Island. Along the way, Monty talked about a lot of the things that he tells his boat members when he first introduces them to the club – the channel markers, sandbars, boat terminology, and how to keep your eyes out for changing weather conditions. “I always suggest that our members who are very serious about learning more about

boating take the NASBLA course,” says Monty. “The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators is a national non-profit organization that works to develop public policy for recreational boating safety. The course is only $30, and you can take the class online.” It was a quiet morning on the water, but surprisingly, we met up with some other members of the Amelia Boat Club. Two members were happily fishing from one of the ABC boats, and another member, a photographer, was taking photos from her boat. We also came across two jet skis, both rented from ABC that morning. “We rent boats and waverunners to the public as well,” says Monty. “So, even if you’re not a member of the club, you can still rent a boat from us. We can even provide a boat captain to take you out if you don’t feel comfortable driving the boat yourself.” After we passed by the downtown marina, we headed over to Cumberland Island, where we saw the iconic wild horses, the ruins of Dungeness, and even a team of biology students collecting various samples from the marsh. It was a terrific day to be out on the water. I love the way everything always looks fresh and new when you see it from a boat: the charm of historic Fernandina Beach, the allure of Old Town, and the magic of Cumberland Island. I will definitely remember this day the next time I want to enjoy a day on the water without all the hassle.
