Every July, we at the Amelia Islander Magazine are happy to publish our annual “Fun in the Summer Sun” guide, in which we highlight some of the many and varied (and sometimes exhilarating!) fun things to do for residents and visitors alike on Amelia Island during the busy summer season. This issue is always great fun for us to put together because we get to acquaint ourselves with some of the new and exciting things going on here on our island, and we get to spotlight many of our old favorites. We don’t want to miss out on all the summer fun that people visiting Amelia Island enjoy! We don’t like to admit it, but for too much of the year, as we’re preoccupied with work, family, kids’ sports and activities, and various responsibilities, we tend to lose track of the fact that we live on a pristine barrier island with the majestic Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Amelia River, with its gorgeous, ever-changing marshes, on the other. Summer is a time to recharge and rejuvenate, and that’s why we always commit in the summer months to getting out on the water. We all long to break free from our daily routines, and our minds turn to kayaking and sailing, surfing and fishing, paddleboarding, boat cruises, and all sorts of excuses to inject something out of the ordinary into our lives. We try to take a river cruise, set sail from Fernandina Harbor, grab a kayak—it doesn’t matter how we do it, we just want to be on the water! Of course, if you’d rather stay on dry land, there’s plenty to do as well, like golf, tennis, hiking, jumping on a Segway, biking off the south end of the island, then there’s skydiving, hang gliding, or just enjoying a little leisurely shopping or dining out at Amelia’s many terrific restaurants. Whatever you do, take some time this summer to explore why people from all over the Southeast come to enjoy our beautiful island paradise! Of course, we don’t want you to get so caught up chasing new adventures that you forget to just kick back on the beach with a good book. And while you’re relaxing, we hope you’ll enjoy the rest of this month’s Islander, which includes an article on how the Amelia Island Museum of History, one of Amelia Island’s true gems, came into being; an update on the growing popularity of the distinctive Island Hopper, Amelia Island’s only public transportation; a feature on Fernandina Beach High School graduate Owyn Porter and her business The Happy Sea, which donates a portion of its revenue to preserve and protect the world’s oceans; a “Backyard Adventure” on the fascinating Kingsley Plantation on Fort George Island; and much more.

TAKE A HIKE! Here in Northeast Florida, our favorite paths are paved with sand, and our local beach parks provide people of all
ages access to a spectacular shoreline and the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. But there are lots of other paths you can take throughout the island, too. Egans Creek Greenway, with its grass-covered paths, serve as a network of trails that are suitable for walking and bicycling, and its environment exhibits a variety of natural wildlife and vegetation. Local wildlife, such as alligators, snakes, bobcats, and many birds, may be enjoyed from a distance. Friends of the Amelia Island Trail have completed a bike path that covers over seven miles, between Peters Point County Park to the south end of the George Crady Bridge Fishing Pier State Park, where it connects to Big Talbot Island. The trail takes advantage of the tree canopy alongside A1A so that much of the trail is shaded and shielded from the wind. A map of the trail can be found at www.ameliaislandtrail.org. Active outdoor adventure-seekers will want to check out the local maritime forests, state parks, and green spaces located in and around Amelia Island. Fort Clinch State Park, Pumpkin Creek Preserve State Park, Little and Big Talbot Island State Parks, Fort George Island Cultural State Park, Yellow Bluff Fort Historic State Park, and George Crady Bridge Fishing Pier State Park all provide a remarkable wilderness experience,

FERNANDINA BEACH NAMED #4 “HAPPIEST SEASIDE TOWN” BY COASTAL LIVING MAGAZINE Fernandina Beach was named one of America’s “Happiest Seaside Towns” by readers of Coastal Living Magazine, finishing in the #4 spot. Rounding out the Top 10 list are destinations such as Hilton Head, South Carolina; Cape May, New Jersey; Camden, Maine; Carmel-by-the-Sea, California; and Sarasota, the only other Florida town to make the list in the magazines’ sixth annual competition. “Year after year, Fernandina Beach’s storied past, historic downtown, quiet beaches, and quaint, coastal culture continue to charm visitors,” says Gil Langley, president and CEO of the Amelia Island Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We’re delighted that readers of this top magazine have recognized the warmth and Southern hospitality our happy little seaside town embodies.” The 2017 finalists were selected by Coastal Living editors based on past inclusion in magazines, as well as nominations from social media. The criteria included the town’s rank on the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, percentage of clear and sunny days, health of the beaches, commute times, walkability, crime ratings, standard of living, geographic diversity, and Coastal Living editors’ assessment of each town’s overall “coastal vibe.” The full list of Happiest Seaside Towns is available at www.coastalliving.com. AMELIA SEASIDE SCULPTURES BRING AWARENESS TO LEAVE NO TRACE ORDINANCE If you’re visiting an Amelia Island beach this summer, be sure to stop at one of four local beach accesses to view the Amelia Seaside Sculpture, a public art component to the Leave No Trace ordinance designed to keep area beaches clean of debris. Installed at Main Beach, Seaside Beach, Peters Point, and Burney Park, the sculptures are the original artwork of five notable artists commissioned for the project. Created using a mix of naturally occurring and manmade debris collected from Amelia’s shores, the unique seaside sculptures will be on display for one year. The idea for the project came after Hurricane Matthew left a large amount of debris on the beach. “We saw this as an opportunity to communicate the message of being mindful of the impact beachgoers have on the beaches through a different medium,” says Leigh Palmer, Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Amelia Island Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Public art has the ability to give viewers new ways to continue the public dialogue.” For more information about the Leave No Trace Ordinance, contact the Nassau County manager’s office at (904) 5306010. For information about the sculptures, visit www.ameliaisland.com. DEREMER STUDIOS LLC
The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Foundation recently presented Community Hospice & Palliative Care with a check for $100,000 at its Earl B. Hadlow Center for Caring in Jacksonville. The donation comes from proceeds generated at the 22nd annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance held in March at The Golf Club of Amelia Island and The RitzCarlton, Amelia Island. Since 1996, the Concours Foundation has donated $2.5 million to Community Hospice & Palliative Care, funding that has provided vital hospice and palliative care to Northeast Florida residents with advanced illness and support for their families. In addition, Community Hospice offers several programs that help improve quality of life, such as Community PedsCare®, a nationally recognized pediatric palliative and hospice program for children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions; Community Hospice Veterans Partnership, a program providing specialized care and support for the unique needs of veterans; and others. In its third decade, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is one of the top automotive events in the world. The Concours returns to Amelia Island March 9-11, 2018. hen Susan McCarthy’s grandparents lived in a trailer park when she was a young girl, visiting them was one of her favorite things to do. “It was a nice place,” says McCarthy. “I always remember how the neighbors and families would get together. What fond memories I have of those days!” Trailer park life has stayed with her over the years, so when McCarthy decided to open an antiques and collectibles shop in Fernandina Beach, Trailer Park Collectibles seemed like the perfect name. McCarthy is no first-timer to business on Amelia Island. She and her husband, Brian, owned the Down Under Restaurant for many years. Although she loved the restaurant business, Susan also knew she had a knack for shopping at estate sales and thrift shops. She opened Trailer Park Collectibles on Alachua Street 11 years ago, and eight years ago she moved the business to Centre Street. And why are so many people buying older furniture and decorative items these days? McCarthy attributes it to a renewed creativity evident in decorating today. “People don’t want to buy new things that other people
already have,” says McCarthy. “They want to decorate their homes as they please, using things that reflect their own personalities and lifestyles.” For do-it-yourselfers, McCarthy sells Farmhouse Paint, a top-notch brand that is so easy and effortless that anyone can enjoy painting with professional results. McCarthy will be offering painting classes starting in the fall. Trailer Park also carries the largest selection of vinyl records in Northeast Florida, featuring 3,000 to 4,000 albums, a collection which reflects her family’s lifetime love of music, making the store even more unique. And as successful as the business has become, McCarthy knows that not all people have the good fortune that she has found, and so she charges a very low rental fee for space in her shop to Cat’s Angels, a non-profit animal protection organization. “We help them showcase their best pieces, and help them raise more money,” says McCarthy. For more information about the store, call (904) 491-4461, or visit www.trailerparkcollectibles.com or their Facebook page for their latest offerings.

he Germano family purchased Amelia Hotel in 1998 and completely rebuilt it, reopening it in 2002. Originally called Amelia Hotel and Suites, the Germano family rebranded their hotel as Amelia Hotel at the Beach. “Our hotel is familyoriented, with a relaxed atmosphere, in a great location on South Fletcher Avenue,” says Holly Germano. “We offer a friendly vibe you won’t find at big resorts. Our staff treats guests like regulars even on their first visit, and so many of our guests come back, year after year.” Richard, Tina, Heidi, Richard, Jr., and Holly Germano feel their family hotel is a reflection of their own close-knit clan. “We cater to families who are looking for an affordable vacation. And we make it special for them,” says Holly. “Our rooms are designed to be warm and welcoming, with premium bedding. Some offer balconies that look out over the beach side of the hotel. We provide a full breakfast every morning, and serve homemade cookies and coffee every afternoon.” Amelia Hotel at the Beach is perfect for large events like family reunions, corporate meetings, and destination beach weddings. They offer a full bar, conference room, and hospitality suite, along with an outdoor pool, and a location close to restaurants and shops. “Our friendly staff can help you plan every aspect of your event, from finding a caterer to arranging activities or tours,” says Holly. “We’re all about Southern hospitality here!” For more information, call (904) 206-5600 or visit www.ameliahotel.com.
im Holwell opened the original Twisted Sisters! in her hometown of Quitman, Georgia. With a passion for creating a store that carried women’s accessories, apparel, and gifts, she gave up her longtime career in healthcare and followed her dream. In October 2005, Kim opened a new Twisted Sisters! on Amelia island, and she moved to Fernandina Beach full-time in 2007. When asked how she came up with the store name, she laughs. “I wanted a fun, eclectic, twisted, happy place that would make our customers happy when they shopped here.” And happy they are, too, because that’s what so many of Twisted Sisters! shoppers say when they come into the store. “Even men like coming in because we have an area set up just for them where they can watch TV while their wives are shopping!” Kim and her staff are constantly looking for new and unique items, and showcasing products made in the USA, including home décor, gifts, ladies’ and baby clothing, accessories, and jewelry.Monogramming is offered, as well as shipping within the United States. Twisted Sisters! currently has a staff of ten, and their energetic personalities are right in tune with Kim’s lively character. “I’m blessed with a wonderful group of ladies who work with me, and together we truly are the Twisted Sisters!” Twisted Sisters! is located at 402 Centre Street in historic downtown Fernandina Beach. he Amelia Island Museum of History is a community treasure enjoyed by visitors and locals alike. Housed in the old county jailhouse, it is a state-of-the art museum and a popular place for history buffs to do archival research. The jail was built in 1938 and its architectural style is considered Masonry Vernacular. The sturdy brick building was built to prevent prisoner escapes and to withstand potential hurricane winds. In 2009, the building was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places. A replica of a jail cell is a popular exhibit in today’s museum. The museum itself has quite a history. The challenge of preserving and collecting important historical documents and photographs was addressed by many groups within the community through the years. In 1975, the Duncan Lamont Clinch Historical Society formed a committee to address the need to preserve the island’s history. An amazing collection of historical documents and photographs had been collected by William Decker. Decker was the caretaker of Ft. Clinch State Park and an avid history enthusiast. A man of many interests, his butterfly collection was
displayed at the 1933 World’s Fair. He was also a gun engraver for MGM studios, among other things. In 1977, a non-profit was formed under the name of the Fernandina Historical Museum. The group lobbied the City of Fernandina to purchase a portion of the Decker collection, which it did. The items were donated to the new organization, and the collection was housed in the Old School House on Atlantic Avenue. In 1978, an interesting coalition formed, which included CRX, the City of Fernandina, and the Fernandina Historical Museum group. CRX donated the historic depot on Centre Street, and it became the home of the local Chamber of Commerce as well as a home for the new museum. The depot became a place where the public could view some of Decker’s amazing collection. In addition, exhibits rotated through the depot, including the George Davis Collection of historic photos and exhibits from the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. However, the Old Depot offered limited space, and the museum badly needed a new, bigger home. When a new continued on next page.

county jail was built in 1979, the old jail house on Cedar and Third Streets became available. It was truly a good news/bad news scenario. The space and the architecturally interesting building were certainly pluses, but the building was in terrible shape. The County Commission gave the museum a 99-year lease for $1 per year, and eventually they deeded the jail house to the museum in 1997. The community came together to bring the old jail house to life, giving the museum a new name, “The Eight Flags Museum of Nassau County, chosen through a contest of local schoolchildren. As the museum grew, it aspired to attract people from a broader market. It was decided that its new focus would be on the history of Florida’s transportation. The eastern terminus of Florida’s first cross-country railroad was Fernandina Beach, so what could be better place for a transportation museum? Unfortunately, the museum found that the new focus did not attract the interest and commitment that it hoped for and a change had to be made. As often happens, when there is a need, a hero or heroine steps forward. Deon Jaccard and her husband, side by side, took up the challenge and brought new life to some of the original displays and the museum. Her concept, which continues today, was

to establish an oral or spoken approach to teaching and sharing history. She enlisted local historians, including Suzanne Hardee, George Davis, and Helen Litrico. Using the island’s Historic District as a living museum, Jaccard organized historic walking tours that are still offered today. The Museum continued to grow and add new exhibits. In 2002, the Museum completed an almost half million dollar renovation. Focus on the different periods of the island’s history through state-of-the-art exhibits showcased the museum’s many collections. On a daily basis, the museum is a busy place. One-hour tours of the museum are held Monday through Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and on Sunday at 2 p.m. In addition, the museum offers historical walking tours, and even a ghost tour on Friday nights. Other exhibits and programs include a Brown Bag Lunch series and 3rd Friday on 3rd Street presentations. The museum offers something for everyone, including camps and programs for children. Museum Archivist Jayne Nasrallah works closely with people conducting research and continues to build the museum’s many collections. A popular gift store is located on the first floor. For more information, visit the Amelia Island Museum’s informative website at www.ameliamuseum.org.

I
n July 2016, NassauTRANSIT partnered with the City of Fernandina Beach and WestRock to launch the Island Hopper, a regularly-scheduled public transportation van running a loop from downtown Fernandina Beach to the beach, along Sadler Road, and back to downtown. NassauTRANSIT, operated by the Nassau County Council on Aging, is the only public transportation service in Nassau County. “More and more people are realizing that our transit system is open to the public, and that we have quite a large system in place,” says Mike Hays, NassauTRANSIT’s Transportation Director. “We are able to operate at a low cost that is affordable to everyone.” The Island Hopper offers locals and tourists alike a comfortable and inexpensive way to get around the northern half of Amelia Island. The service runs Thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., as well as on holidays, and only costs $1 per boarding. The distinctive beach-themed graphic that wraps the bus was made possible by WestRock, whose sponsorship allowed NassauTRANSIT to repair an out-of-service bus
and apply the unique wrap showcasing the Island Hopper brand. Additional funding from the City of Fernandina Beach helped NassauTRANSIT hire drivers specifically for the route, produce the rack cards outlining the service route and schedule, and purchase bus stop signs, which were installed by city staff at each of the eight stops. Daniel Daly, the Island Hopper’s primary driver, is seeing more and more people boarding his bus each day. “Locals often ride it during holiday and event weekends, such as during Shrimp Festival, when they know traffic and parking can present a problem,” says Daly. “Many Amelia Island residents now take the bus to and from their jobs downtown.” Daniel, nicknamed “Dan the Hopper Man,” also provides “flag-us-down” serve, and one-half-mile deviations on request. He even provides his cell phone number to the public (904832-1218) so that clients can call him about rides when the NassauTRANSIT office is closed. The Island Hopper bus accommodates 12 passengers, and it is air conditioned and handicapped accessible. continued on next page.

NassauTRANSIT hopes to extend the hours of operation so that the Island Hopper can be on the road earlier in the morning to accommodate the transportation needs of those working in downtown Fernandina Beach and later in the evening, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights, for restaurant and bar patrons. If the service continues to gain riders, the Island Hopper could expand its route to the resorts on the south end of Amelia Island. “We’re especially excited to offer a summer special, ‘Fare Free Friday,’” says Hays. “Every Friday through September 29, you can ride the Island Hopper for free! And we’re very proud to offer our flag-us-down service, called ‘Catch the Wave.’ Just wave down the Island Hopper and board the bus.” The Island Hopper runs six loops per day, stopping at City Hall, Central Park, Atlantic Recreation Center, Main Beach, Seaside Park, Walmart, Barnabas Center, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center. Other NassauTRANSIT buses transport passengers several times a day from Fernandina Beach and Yulee to Callahan and Hilliard, as well as into Jacksonville and back. All of their drivers are FDOT trained and safety certified. A map of the Island Hopper’s route can be found at nassautransit.org/islandhopper and on rack cards displayed at local hotels, inns, restaurants, and merchants, as well as at the Amelia Island Visitors Center, and at each bus stop. hen Owyn Porter spoke her first word, it wasn’t “mommy” or “daddy”—it was the word “beach.” Her mom, Laurie Moffitt, laughs when she recounts her daughter’s obsession with the ocean. “By the time Owyn was 4 years old, she had it in her head that she would become a marine biologist,” says Laurie. “More than anything else, she wanted to save the ocean and all its sea creatures.” After Owyn graduated from Fernandina Beach High School, she went on to a college in South Florida to pursue her dreams of studying marine biology. “I wanted to stay close to the ocean and have an impact on the future of our oceans,” says Owyn. “It’s all I ever wanted, and all that I could think about. It was the perfect plan. That is, until I discovered I was terrible in math and chemistry, which is a must for marine biology majors.” Owyn had a tough time, and by spring semester of her freshman year, she was in a complete panic. “I called my mother and told her I wouldn’t be able to continue with my marine biology degree,” says Owyn. “I was heartbroken. But after many hours on the phone with my mom, we came up an idea for a new business called The Happy SeaTM, a product line consisting of cute art that would spread ocean awareness and support ocean conservation. I realized that I could still make an impact, just in a different way. Today, The Happy Sea is my life dream, and my entire heart and soul!” continued on page 66.

scintillating summer As summer temperatures heat up, make your seaside garden shine with color and texture by adding the beautiful Aloha Lily and the new Gold Breeze. BY BETTY MORRELL
W
e have now entered the beginning of the hottest time of the year, beginning with Fourth of July firework displays and moving right into nature’s own bangs, booms, and crackles in our annual summer storms. The heat has definitely been turned up, and it’s time to pay a little more attention to the delicate plants in our gardens that don’t tolerate the heat well and give them some extra watering. I have found a bulb that has stolen my heart—the Aloha Lily (Eucomispineapple lily). With this charming Pineapple Lily, you can add a touch of tropical beauty to your summer garden. This beauty has blossoms that will last for weeks, blooming from July through August, and it perfumes the air with the scent of coconut oil. Aloha Lily Leia, a South African native, is clustered with rich pink, barrelshaped spikes that are topped off a tuft of leaves, which explains why it is better known as the Pineapple Lily. Aloha Lily is a dwarf variety that is very maintenancefree, drought-tolerant, pest and diseasefree, and it can be planted any time of

the year, either in pots or in the garden. When planting these bulbs in your garden, place them 4 to 6 inches deep in well-drained soil in a sunny location. For better results, plant Aloha in groups. If growing in pots, plant one bulb in a 5 to 6-inch container, or 3 to 5 bulbs in a 12-inch container for a fuller display. Arrange bulbs in a container just below the surface and cover them with potting soil. I can’t tell you how excited I am to have come across this next new plant! I have literally searched for years for the original plant that I found as a great addition to seaside gardens. The plant, appropriately named Breeze, was so beautiful, graceful, and interesting.

Its supple, arched blades wafted in the breeze and caught your eye. Breeze, which was a new Miscanthus at the time, was a huge hit. All of a sudden, Breeze disappeared, and sadly, I have not seen it since. But lo and behold, the new Gold Breeze has just been introduced, and it is a beauty! You can make a statement with this bold ornamental grass with gold variegated stripes on the blades, banded with yellow bars. In August, feathery gold blooms emerge above over 6 foot stems, remaining throughout the fall. Gold Breeze makes a stunning accent in the garden, or it works well as a container plant. Water Gold Breeze often until it is established, and fertilize in the spring with a slow release granular fertilizer. This is a low-maintenance plant once it is established. It is also a diseaseresistant and drought-tolerant evergreen perennial. I am still checking to find out if Gold Breeze is salt tolerant, and I will let you know in a future column. If you have any questions, you can email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

he criteria were straightforward: a beach community, oceanfront, within an hour of an international airport, not urban, must have open spaces and state or national parks, experience “weather,” and not to be compromised. The answer? Amelia Island, of course! Paula, a native of beautiful Santa Monica, California, met Bob Clarkson when he was in law school with her brother-inlaw thirty-one anniversaries and three children ago. “I grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina,” Bob shares. “After finishing school in California, I never left!” In 2014, the couple began to think about where they might retire one day, and Bob suggested they take a tour of the

Southeast, where he wanted to return with Paula, who had never visited the area. “We toured Charleston, Savannah, St. Augustine, and places in-between,” the couple remembers. They lived out of a suitcase and made their way to seven unique hotels in seven nights. “When we came to Amelia Island, I remembered hearing about The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island because of the Concours d’Elegance,” explains Bob, whose hobbies include boating and cars. “What we found here was access to the beach through the dunes from our hotel, something the other towns didn’t offer in quite the same way.” “I’ll admit, I was thrilled that we loved Florida,” says Paula, who enjoys boating on the Atlantic and the changes in the weather here, a nice change after the steady 75-degree temperatures she experienced in California. “We love power cruising the ocean with our two Portuguese water dogs, and the Florida water is beautiful.” In spring 2015, the couple returned and explored Fernandina Beach in search of a home. upon the three-bedroom, three-bathroom Sandpiper unit, they fell in love with the “1970’s grooviness,” as Paula describes it. They liked that Sandpiper Loop wasn’t situated directly on South Fletcher Avenue, and they appreciated the community’s coastal, wooden construction. The Clarksons’ new address was ready for a refresh, and the couple hired Amanda Webster Design and C.F. Knight Builder & Remodeler to assist in the makeover. “Paula and Bob were cognizant of the limits of the 1,500 square feet,” Amanda explains. “They suggested we plan it like a boat to utilize the spaces in a clever way. It was a wonderful challenge. We took the unit to the studs and started over. “The kitchen was my favorite part. The third level was originally a small u-shaped kitchen and breakfast-sized dining area. We opened up the entire room to be a long kitchen with the island seconding as the dining room.” The third-level also sports an inventive office overlooking the second level living room and the ocean. www.AmeliaIslander.com

Paula and Bob are thrilled with the finished project. They adore the vintage charm of the Sandpiper community and compare their new home to an antique car, where you see a dated exterior, then open the door and are surprised by the beautifully remodeled interior. What comes as no surprise is that the Clarksons continue to relish their walk through the sand dunes to the ocean each morning. When they’re not walking the beach, they’ll be exploring the rest of Florida’s beautiful coastline by boat. 60 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • JULY 2017

The Pointe Restaurant AT ELIZABETH POINTE With spectacular ocean views from its comfortable porch, The Pointe Restaurant offers a delicious homemade breakfast buffet and lunch every day. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY MARION DAVIDSON
T
he Pointe Restaurant, located at Elizabeth Pointe, offers indoor and outdoor seating with one of the most spectacular ocean views on Amelia Island. Purchased by the Dunlop family two-and-a-half years ago, Elizabeth Pointe features glorious wraparound porches and refined Southern hospitality. Jim and Gay Dunlop have previously owned two inns, and for the purchase of Elizabeth Pointe, they partnered with their son, Brandon. I was recently invited to join Marketing Director Tarah Dunlop at The Pointe Restaurant for breakfast one morning, and we had the best seat in the house, a lovely table on the porch overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, with a fresh mug of coffee in hand.
The Pointe Restaurant serves an upscale breakfast buffet every day from 7 to 10 a.m. that is open to the public as well as to their private guests. They also serve lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and offer a monthly Sunday brunch that features two special entrée selections in addition to their regular offerings. When I joined Tarah for breakfast that morning, Chefs de Cuisine Rudy Smith and Mustafa Ba were at the helm, cooking
up some amazing breakfast fare. Everything is made from scratch at The Pointe Restaurant, including their remarkable Chocolate Cappuccino Muffins and Orange Blossom Scones, which were superbly baked and a nice start to our breakfast. The Chefs cook eggs and omelets to order each morning, but we decided to pass on eggs in order to sample their buffet items. I love real, homemade biscuits with sausage gravy, and The Pointe’s are so rich and dreamy I nearly had two! I also had a side of roasted potatoes, which were beautifully seasoned, hot and golden brown, and a spoonful of their succulent grits, cooked in true Southern style. We also enjoyed a side of crispy sausage and bacon, along with a plate of fresh fruit and orange juice. Quite a filling and delicious breakfast, yet there were so many more items on the buffet. Besides eggs to order, the chefs make French toast and pancakes, yogurt parfaits, and of course, cereal, oatmeal, and a variety of juices and teas are always available. Add a mimosa, and your morning is off to a great start at The Pointe Restaurant! A few days after my luxurious breakfast at Elizabeth Pointe I stopped in for lunch on my way to an appointment. Hankering for something hearty, I ordered the roasted beef sandwich, which was made with rosemaryinfused in-house roasted beef, served with spicy horseradish aioli and melted provolone on a fresh-from-the-oven Kaiser roll. The beef was tender and paired perfectly with the cheese and horseradish sauce. The sandwich was served with a side of homemade potato salad, better than any I have made at home. Relaxing in a rocking chair after lunch on the inn’s expansive porch and enjoying the ocean views with a glass of sweet tea, it was easy to see why Elizabeth Pointe received the 2017 Conde Nast Best Service Award and is featured as one of Southern Living Magazine’s Great Inns of the South! For more information, call (904) 277-4851. Elizabeth Pointe is located at 98 South Fletcher Avenue. Visit their website at www.elizabethpointelodge.com.

Sea continued from page 51. The Happy Sea consists of greeting cards, t-shirts, tank tops, hoodies, and magnets, and 10% of all proceeds goes to Ocean Alliance, a non-profit conservation organization that believes the oceans and their marine inhabitants are a common, unique, and irreplaceable asset of humanity. By linking the frontiers of marine science to educational institutions and people around the world, Ocean Alliance brings awareness to ocean environmental concerns on a global level. Owyn and Laurie sell The Happy Sea line of products at Color it Green, their store on Atlantic Avenue, and they also sell online. Color It Green is an ecofriendly shop that offers fair trade gifts, and “upcycled” products that give back. The Happy Sea complements Color It Green’s own mission statement. “On the back of each of our greeting cards is a conservation tip to help remind people what we can do to make a difference and help stop pollution,” says Owyn. “I do all the art and design, and my mom takes care of all the production. This September, we’re going to be featured at Surf Expo in Orlando, and we’re really excited about that.” “Color It Green is stocked with many USA-made products, including items from very talented local artisans,” says Laurie. “Many of our product manufacturers support a cause and donate a portion of their sales to benefit people and organizations around the world. We follow suit by donating a portion of our sales to benefit ocean conservation programs, in addition to our Happy Sea line.” Today, Owyn is doing what she was truly meant to do—attending Florida Atlantic University, pursuing her degree in studio art, and creating new designs for The Happy Sea. “I’m not a marine biologist, but I’m still doing what I can to save the ocean,” says Owyn. “I truly love the ocean, and we have done so much damage to it by littering and using plastic. It’s time we take a stand and make a change.” For more information, visit www. thehappysea.com, www.coloritgreengifts. com, or the Ocean Alliance website at www.whale.org.

ingsley Plantation, located on Fort George Island and managed by the National Park Service, was built by slaves and completed in 1798, 16 years before Zephaniah Kingsley settled there with his family in 1814. Kingsley’s wife, Anna, was from Senegal in West Africa and she was purchased as a slave by Kingsley in Havana, Cuba. When Anna and her children were freed in 1811, she then acquired her own land and slaves. The established plantation featured Sea Island cotton, along with sugar cane, corn, potatoes, and beans. Every time I visit Kingsley Plantation, I learn something new about this tumultuous era in Florida’s past. On a recent visit with my friend, Sherry, we toured the plantation using a free audio tour, which took us throughout the grounds and into the lives of the free and enslaved people of Fort George Island. The slave quarters were built with tabby, a material made from oyster shells. In these tiny dwellings, 60 to 80 men, women, and children prepared their nightly meals and slept in a space smaller than today’s modern closets. The slave buildings are arranged in a semi-circle, similar to village design in some areas of West Africa. As slaves worked in a task system at the plantation, once their tasks were complete, they used the remainder of their day to tend to their personal needs. During the spring, summer, and fall, the plantation garden provides a firsthand look at Kingsley’s cash crops, such as cotton, peanuts, indigo, peas, pumpkins, potatoes, and okra. The barn had multiple uses, including storage, housing for animals, and a work place for slaves. A nearby kitchen, housed in a separate building from the main house, was a
flurry of activity as cooks prepared a variety of foods that fused African and European cultures. Arriving at the waterfront and main house, Sherry and I joined a second tour led by Ranger Tim Donald, who shared the history of the plantation and the people who lived here. Kingsley Plantation is the oldest standing plantation home in Florida today. The main house, which is only open for tours on the weekend, features four corner rooms and a central two-story section. Originally containing nine fireplaces, the plantation house was designed so that windows on all sides of the rooms would allow breezes to cross ventilate the structure. A widow’s walk and full basement complete the home, which is located directly on the Fort George River. Most plantations were located along waterways because transportation by ship was the easiest way to get crops to market or to bring in supplies. When Florida became a U.S. territory in 1821, oppressive laws regarding race caused Anna, her two sons, and some former slaves to move to Haiti, where Kingsley had established a free colony. In 1839, he sold Fort George Island and his beloved plantation to his nephew. After his death, Anna returned to Jacksonville with her two daughters. Today, a tour of Kingsley Plantation serves as reminder of the harsh conditions of slavery, while celebrating the rich tapestry of the African families who called Fort George Island their home. For more information, visit www.nps.gov/timu. To arrange a weekend tour of the plantation house, call (904) 251-3537. Kingsley Plantation is located at 11676 Palmetto Avenue, Jacksonville, 20 miles south of Amelia Island.
