Amelia Island.

Every July, we at the Amelia Islander Magazine publish our annual “Fun in the Summer Sun” guide, in which we highlight some of the many and varied (and often exhilarating!) fun things to do for residents and visitors alike on Amelia Island during our busy summer season. This issue is always a lot fun to put together because we get to discover some of the new and exciting things going on here on our island, and we get to spotlight many of our old favorites. With this issue, we feel like have a better chance of sharing in some of the fun that people visiting Amelia Island are enjoying! We don’t like to admit it, but for a good part of the year, we are a little preoccupied with work, kids’ sports and activities, and other responsibilities, and we tend to lose track of the fact that we live on a beautiful barrier island with the majestic Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Amelia River on the other. Summer is our time to recharge and rejuvenate, and we always commit ourselves in these glorious months to do the things we don’t do the rest of the year. In abandoning our usual routines, our minds turn to kayaking and sailing, surfing and fishing, paddleboarding, boat cruises, and all sorts of fun excuses to add something out of the ordinary into our lives. We take a river cruise, sail on Fernandina Harbor, grab a kayak—it doesn’t matter how we do it, we just want to get out on the water! Of course, if you’d rather stay on dry land, there are plenty of other things to do, like golf, tennis, hiking, jumping on a Segway, biking off the south end of the island, and then there’s skydiving, hang gliding, or just enjoying a little leisurely shopping or dining out at Amelia’s many terrific restaurants. Whatever you do, take some time this summer to explore why people from all over the Southeast come to enjoy our beautiful island paradise! Of course, we don’t want you to get so busy chasing new adventures that you forget to simply kick back on the beach with a good book. And while you’re relaxing, we hope you’ll enjoy the rest of this month’s Islander, which includes a feature on Nassau Habitat for Humanity, a local organization that is changing lives and building confidence; an update on the renovations underway at the Amelia Island Club; an introduction to a dedicated group of players who want to share the joy of the ukulele; a “Backyard Adventure” with Julie Simmons on exploring the art of surfing with Driftwood Surf Shop; and much more.

Or if angling is your passion, join Captain Terry Lacoss at Amelia Angler Outfitters (904-261-2870) for the best in sport fishing, boating, sailing, and sightseeing opportunities, for groups, families, and even hardcore “big game” anglers.

ON THE TRAIL Here in Northeast Florida, our favorite paths are paved with sand, and our local beach parks provide access to a spectacular shoreline and the rolling waves of the Atlantic Ocean. But there are lots of other paths you can take throughout the island, too. Egans Creek Greenway, with its grass-covered paths, has a network of trails that are great for walking and bicycling, its environment offering a variety of natural wildlife and vegetation. and many birds can be spotted on a walk or bike trip through the Greenway. Friends of the Amelia Island Trail has completed a bike path from Peters Point County Park to the south end of the George Crady Bridge Fishing Pier State Park, where it connects to Big Talbot Island. The trail takes advantage of the tree canopy alongside A1A, with much of the trail shaded and shielded from the wind. A map of the trail can be found at www.ameliaislandtrail.org. In addition, the Amelia River-toSea Trail is set to be completed this year along Simmons Road from South Fletcher Avenue westward to the city ball fields off Bailey Road, and then onward to the new Crane Island development on the Amelia River. White Oak Conservation (904-225-3200) offers “Safari from the Saddle” horseback rides with experienced guides through manicured trails, which pass by a number of endangered and threatened species. Rides include lunch and a chance to talk to their animal experts. White Oak also hosts several summer camp experiences for all ages. Active outdoor adventure-seekers should check out the local maritime forests, state parks, and green spaces located in and around Amelia Island. Fort Clinch State Park, Pumpkin Creek Preserve State Park, Little and Big Talbot Island State Parks, Fort George Island Cultural State Park, Yellow Bluff Fort Historic State Park, and George Crady Bridge Fishing Pier State Park all provide remarkable wilderness experiences that include hiking, biking, fishing, camping, picnicking, bird watching, and beachcombing for the whole family. Only a short day trip from Amelia Island, Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is one of the world’s most unspoiled and fascinating black water wilderness swamps in North America. Okefenokee Adventures (866-843-7926) will help you explore this wilderness area with boat tours, naturalist walks, fishing opportunities, and even overnight camping trips. During the summer, alligators are out in full force basking on the flats and on the canal banks soaking up the sun. The prairies are filled with fragrant White Water Lilies, Yellow and Purple Bladderwort, Pitcher Plants, Sundew, Grass Pink, and Ladies Hatpins. Visit early in the day to avoid the heat! Nature lovers will want to visit Amelia Island Nature Center (904-321-5082) and join one of their naturalists on a hike, bike, Segway, or kayak tour, discovering birds, plants, and wildlife. Stop by the fully stocked retail shop complete with top-of-the-line binoculars and field guides to fulfill all your exploring needs. Or visit with their local rescued critters, chat with a naturalist, rent a fishing pole, or sign up for a tour or summer camp. JULY 2019

BAPTIST NASSAU CELEBRATES 25 YEARS

FERNANDINA BEACH LIBRARY CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MOON LANDING Did you know that July 20, 2019 marks 50 years since the first manned mission to the moon? The Fernandina Beach Library celebrated by presenting a sneak peek of the new PBS “American Experience” documentary entitled “Chasing the Moon.” The preview clip, called “Magnificent Desolation,” was free and drew a big crowd at the library. Don’t miss this familiar story told in an entirely new way when the series premieres on PBS Monday – Wednesday, July 8 – 10, from – 11 p.m. Jamil9 Sharif The film, written, produced, and directed by Academy Award-nominee Robert Stone, follows the space race from its genesis to the first lunar landing and beyond. The series shows how the drive to land a man on the moon was fueled as much by politics as by science and technology, making it a controversial undertaking during a volatile time in our nation’s history. The film uses lost and overlooked material as well as interviews with many inside NASA. As we spend this month celebrating our nation and freedom, this is a great chance to learn a bit more about our history and the complex challenges that NASA overcame to fly to the moon and back.

With 11,350 babies delivered, over a half-million ER visitors, more than 64,000 surgeries, and 91,000 admitted patients, Baptist Medical Center Nassau has served our community for two-and-a-half decades. In 1994, Baptist Health purchased the facility from Nassau General, and today, Baptist Nassau is “proud to be the county’s number one choice for health care,” says Baptist Nassau President Ed Hubel. Through the years, Baptist Health has invested more than $130 million in upgrades to the campus, technology, and services, including their recently installed tele-monitoring system. In partnership with Advanced ICU Care, this technology provides 24-hour physician oversight of patients in addition to the bedside care provided by the Baptist Nassau Medical Team. The new system monitors critically ill patients’ medical conditions to identify issues and prompt intervention. Patients hear a doorbell chime signaling that a critical care provider will soon appear on the video monitor screen. This two-way system allows patients to connect with the physician at Advanced ICU Care.“This is part of our commitment to continually innovate and improve safety and quality for our patients,” says Hubel. “By adding around-the-clock tele-monitoring to the quality care already provided by our team, our patients receive the highest level of medical care available today.”

WADSWORTH’S ADDS MARGARITAVILLE TO STORE Wadsworth’s, located at 204 Centre Street, opened its doors in 2004 as a highend menswear boutique and continued as such for eight years. In 2012, after many customer requests for a women’s store with the same flavor, owner Brenda DeMarco added women’s clothing to the mix, which resulted in the Wadsworth’s we know today. Wadsworth’s celebrated its 15th birthday in April, and to celebrate, something new is brewing. Brenda recently added a shop within a shop—Margaritaville! “Margaritaville approached me to see if I was interested in putting one inside Wadsworth’s,” she explains. “They are familiar with my shop and Amelia Island, and we thought it was a wonderful idea and perfect fit.” With bright colors and a fun vibe, Margaritaville is a line of clothing and home goods that evoke the sandy beaches and ocean breezes of Jimmy Buffet’s hit song. From the minute you walk through Wadsworth’s door, you’ll be greeted like an old friend. Brenda shops with her customers in mind and hand-selects great pieces for men and women. And Wadsworth’s continues to carry all of your favorite brands, including Vineyard Vines, Southern Tide, and more. Stop by and checkout Margaritaville! ern and Dina’s Gallery and Gifts is a unique treasure located in the Historic District of downtown Fernandina Beach. “There is a blissfulness to this place. You feel joy while wandering through the shop, viewing all the clever pieces of art,”quotes one customer. Former art teachers Eva Marie Burns and Serey Andree became friends over 10 years ago, while attending an art class at the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. The two traveled together to art conferences and workshops, and eventually, began a dialog about opening an art gallery and art education center. This was the birth of Fern and Dina’s Gallery & Gifts. Fern and Dina’s will celebrate their two year anniversary on July 5, 2019. “We have been so grateful to the community for supporting us in this endeavor, ” says Eva Marie “Fern” Burns. “We have a firm belief that the arts are important for a higher quality of life. We want our gallery to be an art experience for our customers,” says Serey “Dina” Andree. “We enjoy explaining the process and techniques of the pieces on display.”

The Gallery features a different artist or theme every month. The shows are changed in time for Second Saturday Artrageous Artwalk. The Gift Shop represents over 50 local and regional artists in a wide variety of mediums: glass, ceramics, original paintings, sculptures, photography and folk art. The art education center offers a variety of classes include painting, ceramics, jewelry, metal-smithing, printmaking, and mixed media. On the casual end, Fern and Dina’s offers Art Parties and Wine Down Wednesdays. In the summer, they provide a Children’s Art Camp, which this year will be held July 22 - 27. Artists Sandra Baker Hinton, Andrea Mateer, and Serey Andree have their studio spaces at Fern and Dina’s. While shopping, you may also wander into their studios to observe the flowing creative juices! Fern and Dina’s Gallery is located at 26 South 5th Street, downtown Fernandina Beach. They are open Tuesday through Saturday 10 to 5, and on Sunday from 11 to 3. For more information call (904) 261-5566 or visit www.fernanddinas.com or their Facebook page.

melia Makery, which opened next to Scott & Sons Fine Jewelry in January, is the new fun place on the island to create and paint cool things. The Makery is a studio where guests can paint whimsical wooden signs and kiln-fire handdecorated ceramic pieces. Owner Lisa Schneider, who owned ceramic, canvas, and board painting studios in Rochester, Minnesota, relocated with her family to Fernandina Beach. “We took a little break,” says Lisa, “but we just couldn’t stay away from the business.” The 1,100 square-foot studio, which seats up to 40, has an “open paint” system, so reservations aren’t necessary – just drop in any time the creative urge strikes! Guests can bring snacks and drinks. A party room seats ten to host functions for adults or children, making it ideal for a girls’ night out or a children’s birthday party. Reservations are recommended for larger parties. In addition to wooden sign painting and ceramics, Lisa plans to offer “warm glass” crafts starting this summer. “We already have the kiln,” says Lisa, “so it was a perfect fit to include decorative glass.” With school out, lots of kids are enjoying the Makery, especially the mini-summer camps, which feature ceramics, painting, and gardening. Lisa’s husband, Joe, did the build out for the Makery and he continues to help. Daughter Sofie, a senior at Fernandina Beach High School, works part-time in the shop as well. n August 2018, business partners Jamie Smith and Witt Storm became the owners of the former Amelia Island Yacht Basin at the foot of the Shave Bridge in Fernandina Beach. These two lifelong Jacksonville friends have been in the marine business together for years and they are excited to watch their business plan come to life at the new Amelia Island Marina. The iconic marina offers boaters a well-protected harbor, 132 wet slips, 220-plus dry slips, diesel and gas service, a fullservice repair facility, and a fully stocked Ship’s Store. The marina is also home to Amelia Island Boat Club & Rentals, where membership plans and daily rentals of boats and jet skis are available. Jamie and Witt, along with General Manager Jackie Maderski, can be found moving around the marina “sixplus” days a week, and they love meeting the boat owners and boat enthusiasts of Amelia Island. The marina has twenty fulltime employees, including four certified mechanics. Locals and visitors alike will be thrilled to know that the marina’s restaurant will re-open in July as Cajun seafoodinspired Kitchen 251. The renovated space, led by Chef Michael McCarroll from Louisiana, will offer full food and bar service and a wonderful outside deck. Witt is excited about the future of the marina. “The days of owner turnover have come to a halt,” he laughs. “We are here for the long haul.” For more information, you can reach Amelia Island Marina at (904) 277-4615, by VHF on Channel 72, or visit www.ameliaislandmarina.com.

ife takes various twists and turns for all of us, and sometimes we end up in a season we never anticipated. Such was the case for a local mom, Renda Cardenas, who comes from a supportive family, is well-educated, and shared a successful business with her husband until things fell apart. Suddenly Renda found herself and her five-year-old back at square one and without a proper home. “A co-worker suggested I call Habitat for Humanity,” she shares. “It was the best call I ever made. Ironically, it was two days before Hurricane Irma, and within two days after, I received a phone call that they wanted to help me have a home!” “Nassau Habitat for Humanity is a local volunteer organization affiliated with Habitat for Humanity International, a Christian-inspired ministry whose mission is to build decent, affordable housing in the United States and around the world,” explains office manager Debby Ruble. “Since 1993, with the help of volunteers, we build one to two homes a year, raise funds, select the families (without regard to religion, race, ethnicity, family status, or disability), obtain the building sites 33 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

and house plans, and then supervise volunteers, construction, and administer the mortgages. The finished home is sold at cost to the new owner, who is responsible for making 0% interest payments over 20 to 25 years.” “This was the best experience of my life,” says Renda. “I built relationships with the volunteers, who serve from the heart. We prayed together each day before starting work, and they still look out for me even a year after I’ve moved in. I call them my second-family,” she smiles. Renda was also quick to point out the amazing quality of her home, which she watched take shape from foundation to furniture, and which she is confident it will withstand the next hurricane! Additionally, Nassau Habitat works with its customers to teach them about home and lawn maintenance and stays in touch to support future needs, like siding replacement or screen repairs. Habitat for Humanity’s motto is “A hand up, not a hand out,” and in that spirit, new owners are required to contribute continued on next page JULY 2019

300 sweat hours to their new house. The first 100 must be hands-on involvement with the volunteers, and the next 200 can be shared with friends and family members. “Habitat has been a true blessing for my family. They made something that seemed impossible a reality,” says Tara McNeal, who moved into her home this year. “I worked sideby-side with volunteers building my home over the last several months, and I could not be more pleased.” In addition to the great work Nassau Habitat for Humanity is doing for families in our community, they have also been building relationship with other not-for-profits. “It’s really neat that others are reaching out to see if our talented volunteers can help with their needs,” says Debby. In the past year, Nassau Habitat has constructed a breakroom at New to You, the Barnabas resale store, volunteered at local churches, and even partnered with the local Boy Scouts. “They helped me with so much more than my home,” reflects Stacy Krausnyder, another homeowner helped by Nassau Habitat for Humanity. “I learned that I can accomplish things! I can overcome my past, and people can trust me. Today, I give back by volunteering and by sending new homeowners their way. So far, three of my friends have seen that they can find the same confidence that Nassau Habitat for Humanity has helped me realize.” Monetary donations and volunteer labor finance all the work for Nassau Habitat. let the

FUN begin

Formed by a group of dedicated players, the Fernandina Ukulele Network meets regularly to play, perform, and share the joy of the ukulele with young and old alike. BY JULIE SIMMONS PHOTOS BY ROBYN NEMES AND STEVEN CROUNSE

“W

e play for free! If they want us to stop ... that’ll cost them,” laughs Steven Crounse of the Fernandina Ukulele Network (FUN). I’m sure you can imagine the big smile on Steven’s face as he talked about how much, well, fun, this group is having! FUN was conceived by Julie Ferreira, who invited fellow strummers to her home. It didn’t take long for them to outgrow that space and require a public meeting spot, which today is at the Island Art Association, thanks to Gwen Cowart, president of the association and FUN member. The group plays songs together, coaches newer players, and thoroughly enjoys their gatherings on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 7 p.m. In summer, the group only meets the second Wednesday of the month. In addition to the big group, a smaller collection of members are part of the performance arm, The Kooks, explains Steven. The Kooks have performed at Story & Song Neighborhood Bookstore Bistro, Nassau County Council on Aging, and they even traveled to The Woodbine Opry. Teen and Jeff Peterson organize The Kooks, and they love it because, as they say, “It’s hard to play a sad song on a ukulele.” And the dynamic FUN members aren’t just sticking to themselves—they want to share their art with others. Did you know that you can checkout a ukulele at the library? “We continued on next page

saw an opportunity to begin a loaner initiative this past January,” says Steven. “Today there are nine kits with a bag, ukulele, tuner and book in rotation with a waiting list!” “Most people do not know that ukuleles come in four sizes,” Steven explains. He adds that for the young-atheart, playing the ukulele is a terrific way to keep your mind active. The ukulele also offers a great learning opportunity for children. In order to help bring along younger musicians, FUN member Robyn Nemes, was inspired to begin a kids program. “Youth ages 10-18 are invited to the FUN, too,” says Robyn. “We just started in March, and 20 kids came to the first gathering. Some had a few ukulele skills, and others held one for the first time.” The Seaside Strummers, a name the young members chose, kick off their gatherings by tuning the instruments. Next, they break into small groups based on their levels and receive a lesson on some aspect of playing the ukulele, including chords and strumming patterns, before they come back together to jam and try out their new skills. All kids are invited to “catch the ukulele fever,” as Robyn puts it. And

you do not even have to have your own instrument. “Because the community has been so generous with its support, we have ukuleles available to borrow for the lesson and jam session, or for an entire month between gatherings, and we even have some ukuleles for scholarship.” With the goal of inspiring every participant to leave with music in their souls and smiles on their faces, FUN is supporting the Seaside Strummers and pairing beginning players with adults or peer tutors to encourage the new players and add to the camaraderie. For more information about the Seaside Strummers or about ukulele summer camp, email Robyn Nemes at robynnemes@comcast.net. If you want to join in the FUN, you are invited! “Jerry Jeff Walker, whom you might know as the author of “Mr. Bojangles,” put a ukulele in my hand for the first time,” says Steven, who enjoyed playing the instrument for his children and around the campfire before putting it up for 50 years. Until, that is, he found FUN, which he has been having ever since!

A NEW CHAPTER With a complete renovation and expansion, The Amelia Island Club’s Ocean Clubhouse will have three restaurants, an oceanview terrace, and a large event space. BY TERI SOPP PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE AMELIA ISLAND CLUB

T

he member-owned Amelia Island Club is moving forward with renovations to its beautiful Ocean Clubhouse this summer and fall, while continuing to offer golf and hospitality at its Long Point Clubhouse. The 1,200-member club owns both the Ocean Clubhouse within the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort and the Tom Fazio-designed 18-hole golf course and clubhouse at Long Point, both located on the south end of Amelia Island. The club, which was spun off from the Amelia Island Company in 2010, continues to delight members and guests. Ground was broken for the ten million dollar renovation and expansion of the Ocean Clubhouse in November 2018. Members, who had a great deal of input into the renovation, wanted to keep the clubhouse’s same semi-circular footprint overlooking the ocean, as well as the large poolscape with adult and child pools. Nestled in the dunes, the expanded facility will re-open in early 2020. 53 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

The existing building, which was completely gutted, will have three restaurants and an entirely new ballroom/event space when completed. Brand new kitchen facilities in the middle of the building will serve restaurants located at each end. Ervin Lovett Miller served as the project architect, and Winter Park’s Ansana Design is handling interior design. The Sea Oats Café will serve the beach and pool area downstairs. An expanded restaurant and pool bar will replace the old “hamburger and hotdog stand.” A “mini sports bar” will be added to enjoy a drink while watching a game, and food and drinks can be ordered from the beach as well. An upstairs terrace will feature dining and relaxation space. Ocean 5 Restaurant, an elegant ocean-view restaurant, will—by member demand— retain its same footprint. A third restaurant, patterned after a seaside resort in Portugal and yet to be named, will offer a casual bar and dining area. continued on next page. JULY 2019

“The clubhouse interior will be increased from 16,000 air-conditioned feet of space to 23,000,” says David Shepler, General Manager and Chief Operating officer of The Amelia Island Club. The new addition to the clubhouse is The Palmetto Room, a multi-use ballroom and function room, which will have eleven-foot tall windows, high ceilings, and an outdoor terrace overlooking the ocean. The terrace will feature a grand staircase to the oceanside lawn. “This will be a location for memorable events,” says Membership Director Donna Bilger. The space will also have a small gathering room downstairs, available for use as a bridal dressing room. “We really took advantage of the natural environment in reshaping the Ocean Clubhouse,” says Bilger. “Members wanted more casual outdoor dining, for a laid-back luxury. The club really will be a showcase on the island. There will be nothing like it in Northeast Florida.” Bilger notes that Amelia Island Club members are like family, and treat the club as their second home, sharing time with children or grandchildren. During the renovation, Amelia Island Club members are able to enjoy the Long Point Club and its amenities. Bilger explained that the members of The Amelia Island Club also have access to the spa and tennis courts at Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort. “There is a wonderful fitness center with an indoor pool and a beautiful spa,” she says. “Because Amelia Island has so many full-time homeowners, there isn’t really a ‘season’ at our clubs,” she says. “We have activities year round for the families of all our members.” Bilger notes that anyone can join The Amelia Island Club; it is not necessary to live in Amelia Island Plantation. She also says that as owners of the club, all members are committed to the maintenance and growth. The renovation and expansion insures that The Amelia Island Club will provide wonderful memories for years to come. For more information, contact Donna Bilger at (904) 277-5933.

fiery firecrackers If you are looking to add bright color to your landscape this summer, try the fiery red Firecracker or new Crape Myrtles like Purple Magic or Sunset Magic. BY BETTY MORRELL

F

ireworks burst in the sky, firecrackers and steaks sizzle, and the heat is here. It is definitely July, and now you can enjoy all the work you did earlier this year to create a beautiful garden. Speaking of fireworks – do you have a Firecracker plant in your garden? I am enjoying my wispy, free-form, cascading, fiery red blooming Firecracker plant, which is now a large bush attracting butterflies and hummers. This salttolerant plant is fun to have. Mine is in full morning-to-afternoon sun and lateafternoon shade. Firecrackers (Penstemon) need plenty of room for their arching form, but you can control their size. It’s not a plant for the neat gardener who likes a manicured, formal garden. However, this plant can soften and highlight an otherwise well-trimmed landscape. I like it for a wildflower or cottage garden. Branches lying on the ground will root. This unusual flowering plant got its name from the formation of flowers bursting out in all directions from the base of the plant. Fire engine-red explodes in profusions of bloom. Plant

TIP OF T HE M O N T H Remember to fertilize roses every month during summer and do not use chemical fertilizers on new plantings now as they will burn the roots. Milorganite is fine.

in containers, cascading over a wall, along a fence, porch or deck, under palms, or in your butterfly garden. I have fallen in love with some new PP Crape Myrtles in the Magic Crape Myrtle series. They are adaptable to any garden, and the colors are outstanding. Purple Magic is a green leaf variety, with dark purple flowers that cover this rounded, dense shrub from top-to-bottom. The glossy green leaves are a great backdrop for this blooming machine. If dead-headed after first bloom, it will be a heavy re-bloomer. The leaves emerge with a pretty red tint and eventually turn to glossy green. This new plant blooms in early summer, with dark purple flowers on a dense shrub. It fits in the garden where taller crape myrtles won’t. This new variety is more compact.

59 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

JULY 2019

Purple Magic grows 6 to 10 feet tall and wide and likes full sun. Sunset Magic also caught my eye, with large red flowers and deep blackpurple leaves that hold their dark color into late summer. This compact beauty has flowers covering it when in bloom. Sunset Magic flowers more heavily than other reds with dark foliage. This plant is upright and grows 5 to 10 feet in height and 4 to 8 feet in width. Plant in full sun. The most compact of this new series is Midnight Magic, with dark purple maroon foliage and deep pink flowers that stand out against the almost black foliage. It has an upright, compact shape. Midnight grows 4 to 6 feet in height and width, making it a great specimen for the smaller garden. Also in the series is the very pretty Coral, a rounded dense shrub with salmon-pink flowers, and the tall Twilight Magic, with deep plum-colored foliage and pink flowers, a stunning combination. This tree grows to 16 feet by 8 feet. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

I

f anyone knows how to build a house, it would be Donna Lynne VanPuymbrouck. She has been building homes in Nassau County for 23 years, and her family has lived in five different ones. She smiles as she stands behind her current home on Egans Creek. “This is our forever home. It has all the things we want and meets the needs of our growing family.” The home, originally built in the 1990s, had many details typical of houses built at that time, including a circular stairway leading to the second floor. The VanPuymbroucks had a vision that included some major changes. The spaces are designed to be “family-friendly,” a home with plenty of room for their three daughters’ families and the grandchildren. They gutted

the interior, then added 400 square feet for a total of around 5,000 square feet. Taking advantage of their location on Egans Creek, with views of the marsh and Ft. Clinch State Park, was a priority. With Donna’s knowledge of the latest in building innovations, they created spaces that could be enjoyed regardless of the weather. The porch overlooking the pool area, creek, and the marshes can be completely enclosed or can be totally open, depending on the weather. The covered porch has a fireplace, a large sitting/dining area, and a summer kitchen. The family has hosted 50 for Thanksgiving gatherings on their back porch. The pool area is raised, with terraces leading down into the beautifully landscaped backyard. Donna’s husband, Bob VanPuymbrouck, owner of Bob’s Irrigation & Landscape, created a backyard with a mix of plantings that offer color and variety throughout the year. A blue-and-white playhouse in the backyard, complete with window boxes and curtains, stands ready for the grandchildren. When the VanPuymbroucks asked one of their granddaughters 62 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

what color she would like for the playhouse’s walls, she replied, “Rainbow.” The painters painted a playful mural complete with a rainbow on one wall. From the front entrance, you can see all the way through the house to the porch, pool area, and yard. The backside of the house is all porch and opens to the pool terrace. At one end of the main living area is an open kitchen area. The latest in appliances by Wolf finishes off the kitchen and includes a steam oven. An innovative fan system vents the stove so no large stove hood was required. Two large islands create workspaces so everyone can help in the food preparation for the large groups JULY 2019

the family enjoys entertaining. Shiplap and industrial-style lighting fixtures add a contemporary touch. At the other end of the great room is a cozy entertainment center with a large widescreen television. When the weather is right, the glass doors leading out to the porch can be opened, creating a huge entertainment space that flows into the pool area. The master bedroom is located on the first floor and opens to the porch. The master bathroom, with its 7 foot by 10 foot shower area and full-body jets, is inviting. The tile in the shower looks like moving water. The second floor has a large reclaimed space from the renovation, which is now an area dedicated to the kids. Fancy Sushi An Amelia Island favorite since 2007, Fancy Sushi always satisfies with Steamed Gyoza, delicious sushi rolls like Soft Shell Crab, Hibachi, and of course, Fried Oreos. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

A

friend once told me as I was about to open a restaurant that consistency breeds constancy; if you always prepare it well, they will come back again and again. And so, on a recent sultry summer evening, my wife and I found ourselves seated once again in the cool environs of one of our favorite spots, Fancy Sushi Japanese Grill and Sushi Bar. The service at Fancy Sushi is always friendly and prompt, but on this night, thanks to the unpredictable nature of a restaurant schedule, our server was none other than owner

Susan Wang herself. We are an easy table. I could probably fill out my sushi order blindfolded. Our drinks quickly arrived, followed by bowls of piping hot Mayabi, the delicious clear broth with thinly sliced mushrooms and crumbled tempura cracker, and an order of tempurabattered kani, or artificial crab stick drizzled with shrimp sauce. The fact that these dishes are complimentary and given to every customer makes me feel no less special when they smile and place it on my table. A tall Sapporo in a frosty mug for me, an icy Coke for the missus, and all is right with the world. 68 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Whether or not we bring the kids, we always order steamed Gyoza and an order of Wakame or Seaweed Salad to start our meal. I love to mix the sweet and savory seaweed with the thinly sliced “noodles” of daikon radish, and the steamed pork-filled dumplings with their special gyoza sauce are a family favorite. The a la carte side of the sushi menu offers items familiar to most sushi lovers, but I almost always go for an order of Tuna, Escolar, Spicy Scallop, and Baby Octopus prepared Nigiri-style on balls of seasoned rice. My youngest daughter loves baby octopus; she bites off the head and groans, “Mmm, brains!” much to the horror of her vegetarian older sister. The kids love to order off the hibachi menu, usually choosing the Chicken Teppanyaki with Noodles and Vegetable Fried Rice, but Allie and I are here for the sushi. We order a couple of classic rolls like the Rock n Roll and the Soft Shell Crab, but Allie’s favorite is the Fancy Q. Spicy tuna and avocado are rolled with nori and seasoned rice, and then blanketed by thin layers of escolar before being topped again with paper-thin slices of avocado and drizzled with a smoky eel sauce; it is beautiful and delicious. When our sushi was delivered, one might think us gluttons, but it is only I who is truly guilty. When I pushed away from the table, no trace of the royal feast that had been laid before us remained. The rolls were fabulous, each one scrumptious and surrounded by the stately pieces of nigiri. As our meal ended, Susan asked if we would like a complimentary fried oreo, a house treat, but Allie and I knew when we turned in our order that there would be no room for such confections when the evening was over. Fancy Sushi Japanese Grill and Sushi Bar has been delighting customers since 2007. They can be found on Sadler Road across the street from the Publix shopping center or online at www.fancysushiq.com. surf ’ s up ! s urf ’ s up ! surf surf’s up! BY JULIE SIMMONS • PHOTOS COURTESY OF DRIFTWOOD SURF SHOP

D

riftwood Surf Shop at 31 South Fletcher Avenue is our favorite neighborhood stop for quality footwear, sunglasses, and swimwear for the whole family. Anything you need for fun in the water and on the beach, they have it. But did you know that they will also take you right across the street and into the water for a surf lesson? This local, family-owned shop has been in our community since 1979. Three generations of Parkins—from founder Billie Parkin (Mama B), to her son, Peter Parkin, and in recent years, grandchildren Steve Parkin and Peter’s daughter, Ryley Parkin—have joined the family business. “We all take pride in being a service-oriented shop stocked with the highest quality merchandise,” says manager and instructor Steve. But Driftwood isn’t just interested in outfitting you, they’re passionate about teaching you the art of surfing! “No matter your level of experience, every surfer is still learning,” says Steve. “Surfing isn’t just about standing up on a board. It’s about becoming attuned and responsive to the ocean, a constantly changing dynamic environment, so you can anticipate incoming waves and catch one.” This summer, I decided to get reacquainted with the fun of surfing. Steve invited me to check out their program, and I showed up after we chatted back and forth looking for a day and time with perfect conditions, illustrating the attention to detail Driftwood offers in their surf instruction. “Orientation to the conditions is one of the most important things to learn,” says Steve. “Recognizing the wind direction, tide, wave size and shape, and water currents such as rip-tides is what 84 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

will set you up for success… and Mother Nature giving us a day with some swell!” The private one-hour lesson is side-by-side in the water, where you learn as you do. But first, Steve made sure I understood the number one safety tip—never have my board between myself and an incoming wave. When I asked him if maybe I’m too old for this, he just laughed. “We teach all ages. If a child is comfortable in the water, we are all set, and as long as you can ‘pop up’ from your belly to your feet, you are young enough to try it out!” At the beginning of the lesson, Steve focuses on technique, including proper paddling position to move effectively into the wave. Next, he covered how to “pop-up” to a standing “stance” on the board. “At the beginning, I always help you into the wave,” says Steve. “I want you to learn how to feel the board and to pop up, so I take the timing of the wave entry out of it for you. As you learn, I give you more verbal instruction so you can paddle and catch your own wave!” “Learning the skill, practice, and persistence is what becoming a surfer is all about, and I love being able to help people,” he says. “The smile on a kid’s face and feeling the stoke they experience whey they stand up for the very first time is why I come to work every day.” Steve and his team are ready to share the stoke with you, too! Visit www.driftwoodsurfshop.com or call (904) 321-2188 for information on their private and group lessons. And keep an eye on their Facebook and Instagram (@drftwd) for updates on upcoming events, including free clinics for the community. JULY 2019
