Every July, we at the Amelia Islander Magazine publish our annual “Fun in the Summer Sun” guide, in which we highlight some of the many and varied (and often exhilarating!) things to do for residents and visitors alike during the gorgeous summer months here on Amelia Island. This issue is always a lot of fun for us to put together because we get to discover some of the new and exciting things going on here on the island, and we get to spotlight many of our old favorites. With this issue, we feel like have a better chance of joining in some of the good times that people visiting Amelia Island are discovering and enjoying! Thankfully, things seem to be returning to normal this summer after our unprecedented year of Covid-19. I don’t want to spend much time looking back, but it feels great to see our beaches busy, sidewalks crowded, and restaurants full again. Amelia Island is a resilient community, and we have come roaring back. And not a moment too soon! Everyone is ready to recharge and rejuvenate, and the glorious months of summer are the perfect time to do just that, giving us the opportunity to enjoy things we don’t always have time for during the rest of the year. When we think about recharging, we remember that live on a beautiful barrier island with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Amelia River on the other, and our minds naturally turn to kayaking and sailing, surfing and fishing, paddleboarding, boat cruises, and all sorts of fun excuses to add something special back into our lives. We take a river cruise, sail on Fernandina Harbor, grab a SUP board—it doesn’t matter how we do it, we just want to get out on the water! Of course, if you’d rather be on dry land, there are plenty of other things to do, like golf, tennis, hiking, skydiving, jumping on a Segway, biking off the south end of the island, as well enjoying a little leisurely shopping or dining out at Amelia’s many outstanding restaurants. Whatever you do, take some time this summer to explore why people from all over the Southeast continue to visit our beautiful island paradise. Of course, we don’t want you to get so busy chasing adventure that you forget to simply kick back on the beach or by the pool with a good book. And while you’re relaxing, we hope you’ll enjoy the rest of this month’s Islander, which includes a feature on the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival’s Spring Institute, which brings together the world-renowned Dover Quartet with young chamber musicians for a little musical mentoring; another “Eyes to the Eyes” feature from Gail Pfoh on the amazing shorebirds that share our beaches and how we can protect them; a look at one era ending and another beginning at Waas Drug Store; a “Backyard Adventure on sailing the waters around Amelia; and much more. See you around the island!

TAKE TO THE TRAIL Here in Northeast Florida, our favorite paths are paved with sand, and our local beach parks provide people of all ages access to a spectacular shoreline and the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. But there are lots of other paths you can take throughout the island, too. Egans Creek Greenway, with its grass-covered paths, serve as a network of trails that are suitable for walking and bicycling, its environment exhibiting a variety of natural wildlife and vegetation. Friends of the Amelia Island Trail have completed a bike path between Peters Point County Park to the south end of the George Crady Bridge Fishing Pier State Park, where it connects to Big Talbot Island. In addition, the Amelia Riverto-Sea Trail has been completed along Simmons Road from South Fletcher Avenue westward to the city ball fields off Bailey Road and then onward to Crane Island. ALS GOLF CLASSIC RETURNS ON AUGUST 6 AT LONG POINT When John Louis O’Day retired on Amelia Island in 1996, little did he know that in just two short years, he would be diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Within four years from diagnosis, O’Day would lose his life to this progressive and fatal disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, and breathe. In 2002, O’Day left behind his wife, Ardith, five children, twelve grandchildren, and many friends and family members. After O’Day’s passing, his son Mark decided to start a yearly golf event to honor his father’s memory and raise money for the ALS Association Florida Chapter. “Besides money going to funding research, proceeds also help families whose loved ones are suffering from the disease,” says Mark. “The outpouring from the community and our sponsors has been overwhelming.” This year’s tournament will be held on Friday, August 6 at The Golf Club at Long Point. Registration and Lunch Buffet will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon. A Shotgun Start is at noon, which will be followed by a Dinner Reception at 5 p.m. with raffle prizes, awards, and a silent auction. he Island Art Association (IAA) Gallery is owned and operated by over 250 artists and associates, and they offer a wide range of art opportunities in their Education Center to Nassau County residents and visitors alike. A 501(c)3 charitable organization whose mission is philanthropic and educational, IAA’s purpose is to develop and sustain an interest, appreciation, and enjoyment of the arts. Our community developed a new appreciation for the arts during last year’s national quarantine. Art soothed, educated, and entertained us, and it will continue to do so in new and refreshing ways. A year-round project for IAA is administration of the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival Arts and Crafts section. Artist vendors are selected through a detailed jury process and given guidance through the festival from IAA volunteers. Guest judges review all of the art, awards are made, and then the entire process begins again for the next year. Nouveau Art, a bi-monthly themed show, features “new” artwork submitted
by IAA members, community artists, and residents for five juried themed shows each year. This gives all artists the opportunity to display and sell artwork in the gallery for a period of two months. Participation is open to the public, as well as the membership. Nouveau Art is judged by guest art experts from around the region and nearby universities. You are sure to find a treasure from the original artwork of 48 local exhibiting artists. The gallery is open late during Second Saturday Artwalk. Come downtown and be inspired by great art and conversation in the heart of Fernandina Beach’s Historic District. ori O’Conner, an Amelia Island native, worked at Red Otter Outfitters for two years before she became the owner in April. Located just a few blocks from downtown Fernandina Beach, the original store has been in the same location for seventeen years. A University of Georgia graduate with a degree in Retail Management, Tori was the perfect person for former owner Jennie Stephens to pass the torch to. “I enjoy meeting new customers and getting to know more people who live in town,” says Tori. Her favorite thing about living in Fernandina Beach? Being surrounded by family. “Both sets of my grandparents live on the island, as well as my parents. I only have one sister, but there’s a whole lot of cousins!” laughs Tori. “As a matter of fact, in the 1980s, my grandfather owned and lived in this building where Red Otter is located. The office space used to be a small apartment.” Red Otter Outfitters carries accessories and apparel for men and women, as well as a large assortment of comfortable footwear, with name brands like North Face, Patagonia, Keen, Merrell, Prana, Chaco, On Running, and more. Tori laughs when I ask if she is the sole owner. “Yep. Just me,” she says. “Well, I’m not entirely alone. I have Basil,” she adds. Basil is a five-year old rescue mix who loves to be at the store. indy Kavanaugh moved from Douglas, Georgia to Amelia Island with her family in 1988. At 18, she started working as a bench jeweler for a shop in Fernandina Beach, and later worked at Underwood Jewelers in Jacksonville while in college at the University of North Florida. After college, Lindy enrolled in the Gemological Institute of America and earned her Graduate Gemologist degree at the New York City campus. She spent four years in New York City, working on Fifth Avenue for Tiffany & Co. before returning home to Fernandina. “I met my husband, Hardee, at the Palace Saloon. We’d both lived in New York. Hardee, who is a harbor pilot, attended Kings Point, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, in Long Island, but that night we were both at the Palace,” Lindy laughs. “Hard to believe we’ve been married for 19 years and have three kids!” Not long after Lindy bought the building at 110 Centre Street where Lindy’s Jewelry is now, she found out that her husband’s ancestors once owned the store. “I have the paperwork dated 1907. Lindy’s Jewelry used to be J & N Hardee, Groceries and Hardware.” I asked Lindy what her favorite thing was about owning a jewelry story, “It’s a happy business. Customers often buy jewelry for special occasions or significant milestones. musical mentoring Started in 2019, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival’s Spring Institute brings together young musicians with the best in the business to learn and perform.

T
wenty years ago, a cellist vacationing on Amelia Island and a group of Fernandina Beach women had a vision. Their love of chamber music and passion for music education was the perfect combination. Together, with help from the community, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival was born. Since its humble beginning, it has grown into one of the largest chamber festivals in the southeastern United States. Staying true to its passion for music education, the Festival launched the Spring Institute in 2019. The primary purpose of the Spring Institute is to provide young students with the opportunity to be trained and mentored by some of the best musicians in the field. This year, the esteemed Dover Quartet, the Festival’s quartet-in-residence and one of the most in-demand quartets in the world, were able to share their knowledge with students from the Meraki and Jennings quartets. I had the opportunity to interview the students and arrived at Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church as Bryan Lee and the members of the Jennings Quartet were in the middle of a coaching session. Eric Sakurai, Executive Director of the Festival, appeared and whisked me off to another room to meet the Meraki Quartet. 33 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
It was obvious that Eric is great at time management, which no doubt came in handy this week. When I asked the Meraki Quartet what their favorite thing about the Spring Institute has been, they were unanimous: to have a week of instruction by the Dover Quartet was something the students would never forget. “We love the Dover Quartet, and to get to meet them and work with them has been incredible,” says violinist Sofia Matthews. “It’s so nice to get to work with a quartet on the younger side because it feels like our dream is attainable. They’ve shown us that if we keep working hard and working together, we could possibly get there too,” adds cellist Isabelle Nichols. It was time to run next door and get an interview with the Jennings Quartet before they left for lunch. I asked the same question: “What’s been the best thing about your week at the Spring Institute?” “The sessions with the Dover Quartet, the feeling of satisfaction of getting to know how they work, and getting to use the knowledge they’ve cultivated and shared with us so we can be a better quartet,” says Louis Parra Elkhouri, cellist. “The Dover are like these mammoth players, my favorite quartet in the world. talked to us like colleagues. It’s really crazy and surreal,” says violinist Anna Black. “The most challenging part has been having the energy and stamina to endure all of the coaching and performing,” says violist Carlos Walker. Then he laughed and added, “But what a great thing to get to complain about!” “I’m not aware of another student string quartet program anywhere that matches this kind of intense musical experience. The progress and development the students achieved in such a short time was amazing; it was a thrill to witness,” says Christopher Rex. “I hope the students know how much joy they brought to everyone on the island.” The Dover Quartet enjoys the opportunity to work with students. “They’re great, so much fun to work with. Really sweet and receptive, and their energy energizes you. At the end of the hour or two hours that you’ve worked with them, you feel more

invigorated than you were before,” says violist Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt. “Amelia Island feels like a second home for us. The Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival is a great organization that’s always been ahead of the curve. They bring so much to the community, and we love our time here,” says violinist Bryan Lee. The feeling is mutual. “We are fortunate to have all four members of the world-renowned Dover Quartet and Christopher Rex as coaches and mentors for the Institute. The students practiced and rehearsed very diligently day and night at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church for the entire week. Their final concert at the Nassau County Courthouse was simply amazing,” says Erik Sakurai. “It’s so enlightening for me to see both student quartets make very noticeable improvement in just one week. Without this wonderful community amongst the musicians, we could not have had a successful Spring Institute.”

A locally owned pharmacy since 1893, Waas Drug Store is getting a new owner (but not a new name!) as longtime owner Jimmy Parker gets ready to begin his retirement. BY JULIE SIMMONS • PHOTOS BY SHERRY CARTER
S
ome of you may recall when Waas Drug Store was on Fourth Street downtown, others will recall when it moved to Sixth Street, and the rest of us probably have visited the 14th Street location since it found a home there over 20 years ago. But whether or not you remember these various locations, you probably remember meeting Amelia Island’s favorite pharmacist, Jimmy Parker, R.Ph., who has owned and operated Waas Drug Store since August 1970. “That’s nearly 51 years ago, Julie,” says Jimmy with a smile, reflecting on how quickly five decades can pass. “I’d just finished pharmacy school at University of Georgia and heard there was opportunity to buy a pharmacy down in Fernandina.” Jimmy liked the idea of being near Folkston, Georgia, where he grew up. “I visited Glyn Waas, who was selling to pursue other career interests. Leonard Long was a pharmacist working with him, and he and I went in together and bought the business. We ran it together for 10 years, and in 1980, I bought his half.” 43 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
From that day forward, Waas Drug Store has been Jimmy Parker, and I bet many of you have great stories to tell. But today, the secret is out that Jimmy is retiring. He’s ready to travel with his wife, Molly, who already has her maps and calendar out, and they look forward to spending more time with their children and grandchildren. Fortunately, he found just the right successor. “Katie Graves Kotopka approached me and said that if I was ever interested in selling, she might be interested in buying. I prayed about it and knew this was the right decision. I’ve known Katie for many years from church, her husband played baseball with my son, and she brings a wealth of experience after serving in a chain pharmacy for the past 20 years.” Jimmy is thrilled about transitioning the reigns to a colleague who loves independent pharmacy and Fernandina Beach as much as he does, but I wager to say that nobody is as excited as Katie. “Waas is where it all started for me!” she continued on next page JULY 2021

says. “While I was in high school, I shadowed pharmacist Pam Simmons at Waas Drug. I decided that was my calling, and off to Samford University’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy I went. It is so special to me that the pharmacy that steered me toward this career is now going to be my own enterprise.” Katie is quick to tell you that she is a smalltown girl and she will continue to provide the white-glove personal service that is synonymous with the Waas name. “I have huge shoes to fill, but I am so excited. I look forward to the opportunity to do just this, and give back to the community.” While keeping up the Waas tradition, Katie is also hoping to offer new technology options to support a tech-savvy clientele, but she reiterated that her goal is to get medicine to all types of patients in the best way possible. “We also will be adding more gift items soon! We are hoping Waas Drug becomes not only a place for medications and healthcare support, but also a place where folks know they can stop in to grab a gift and go, whether for a baby shower, wedding, birthday, or hostess.” Katie will join Jimmy to transition the business this month, and Jimmy will be around for a few more weeks. While you enjoy the beach this summer, don’t forget that we share the sand with a variety of amazing shore birds, from the American Oystercather to the tiny Least Tern. STORY AND PHOTOS BY GAIL PFOH
A
hhh, summertime! The stage is set to enjoy our beautiful sandy beaches, sea shells, shrimp, and sunshine. But people aren’t the only ones interested in eating shrimp and staying at the beach. An assortment of beautiful and amazing birds live here, too. In many cases, their very lives depend on the things found along our coast. We can always find an interesting assortment of shorebirds here on Amelia Island, including the American Oystercatcher, which is the largest of our shorebirds. With his red-yellow eye, deep red eye ring, and black head, this species looks dazzling on the sand. Their wingspan is approximately 32 inches! Compare that to our smallest shorebirds, such as the Least Tern, which have wingspans of only 19 inches. Oystercatchers eat insects and jellyfish, but their primary food source is mollusks. They use their powerful bright red-orange bill as a shucking tool to open shells. In Florida, American Oystercatchers are considered a threatened species. The Ruddy Turnstone is a colorful shorebird species with bright orange legs. The Sibley Guide to Birds describes them as “relatively short-legged with a short, pointed bill. plumage pattern with dark breast and white belly is distinctive.” You may see them year-round along the water’s edge or on jetties. They eat insects, including bees and wasps, as well as mollusks and small fish. Another shorebird found in our area is the Royal Tern. Cornell University’s website allaboutbirds.org says, “A sleek seabird, the Royal Tern lives up to its regal name with a tangerine-colored bill and ragged, ink-black crest against crisp white plumage. Royal Terns fly gracefully and slowly along coastlines, diving for small fish, which they capture with a swift strike of their dagger-like bills. They are social birds, gathering between fishing expeditions on undisturbed beaches and nesting in dense, boisterous colonies.” In some places, nesting season is in full swing for Royal Terns right now, so watch for them when you visit the beach. You may even get to see some of their beautiful courtship behaviors, which happen in the air and on the beach. Mated pairs spiral through the air very close to each other. a food treat and even bow to her! Like many of our shorebirds Royal Terns nest right on the beach. They are masters of camouflage; their eggs and chicks are hard to see, so be cautious where you walk or drive. The smallest tern species in North America, the Least Tern also nests here, as do Wilson’s Plovers. Least Terns are listed as threatened in Florida. Like the Wilson’s Plover and others, their “nest” is only a small, scraped-out spot directly on the beach. Shorebird species vary with our seasons. Keep your eyes to the skies, and you may find Willets, Black Skimmers, Killdeer, Wilson’s Plovers, or even the long-distance migrator, the Red Knot. The diminutive Piping Plover flies hundreds of miles to spend the winter with us. Most people know the plight of the endangered sea turtles that visit us. Not nearly as many know that we share our home with threatened and endangered bird species, which is also a big responsibility. We are the custodians of their future and the future of all shorebirds, which depends on the birds successfully nesting among us, free of disturbances from drones, people, and pets. native beauties Florida has a great number of native plants, from ground covers and blooming plants to shrubs and specimen trees, which can add new interest to your landscape. BY BETTY MORRELL
F
inally, the booms, swishes, crackles, and pops celebrating Independence Day have stopped. The Fouth of July is over for another year (my poor little dogs were so traumatized!), and we will have a reprieve until the next occasion (most likely New Year’s Eve). Did you know that Florida has the greatest wealth of native plants of all the states? Native plants ranging from spectacular bloomers to miniature vines are very desirable for home use, either in in group or specimen planting. Here are some of the better known ones for you to consider this month. The Gopher Apple (Licania michauxii) is an evergreen groundcover found in the pinelands and dunes over the entire state. It grows from 3 to 12 inches, and it has white flowers in the spring and pink flowers in summer. The Gopher grows in full sun, can tolerate dry conditions, and is salt-tolerant. The Partridge Berry (Mitchella repens) likes moist, acid sites, grows 1 to 2 inches high, is evergreen, and has white flowers in spring followed by red berries. It thrives in the shade, is salt-

tolerant, and it’s good for edging in mass plantings. The most common native vine is the Carolina Jasmine, which I am sure many of you have growing on your fences or trellises. It grows in the woodlands, so can tolerate sun to part-shade. The fragrance is captivating. Native deciduous vines include Southern Honeysuckle, Trumpet Creeper, and the Virginia Creeper. The Virginia Creeper was called “Weed of the Month” by Home and Garden Magazine. I call it an invasive weed. It is native to North America and can climb to 30 feet or more. Its tendrils end in oval-shaped disks that adhere to surfaces.

It can damage stucco, mortar between bricks, and painted surfaces. This five-leaved vine is often mistaken for Poison Ivy, which has has three leaves. Like poison ivy, get rid of it unless you are using it as ground cover for erosion control on a slope. It is drought-tolerant and a vigorous grower. To control of or eliminate Virginia Creeper, prune, mow, and weedwhack in the spring. If it survives until fall in your garden, the leaves turn a brilliant red and the vines produce dark blue berries, which are valued by birds and wildlife. (However, they are somewhat toxic to humans and dogs.) I can’t believe they are sold in pots ready to put in your garden. Other popular native shrubs make great foundation plantings, and many native trees—some very large—can be used as specimen plants in your landscape. To be continued in another issue. ittle did Phil and Kathy Coletti know that when Hurricane Irma passed the north Florida coast in 2017, a tornado would spin off from it and destroy their beloved beach house on North Fletcher Avenue. When they bought the property in 1998, they knew it would be their forever beach property and eventual retirement home. They had owned other homes on the island, but being on the beach was a priority. Their property is the last house on North Fletcher adjacent to Fort Clinch; they appreciate the advantages of being next to the park, with its dunes and open spaces. The tornado blew out the back doors and windows of the house and torqued the structure. When the Colettis decided to rebuild, they found that there were strict local and state building codes designed to build safer structures in the case of hurricanes or other violent weather. They were limited on both the footprint and the height of the new house. Restrictions even included landscaping choices. They credit their architects, Cotner and Associates, and their builder, Steve Pickett, for helping them jump through the necessary hoops.

Despite the tragedy of losing a house, it was an opportunity the couple embraced—a chance to build a house that was designed for their family. The house has the look of the popular so-called cottages in the Hamptons on Long Island, New York. Corbels and stick-style details mirror features found in houses in the island’s Historic District. Parents of quadruplets who are now grown, the couple planned a bedroom for each, with a bunk room for young visitors and/or future grandchildren. Kathy especially appreciated Melissa Wehrmeyer of Pickett Construction for sharing her talents and helping find the materials, appliances, fixtures, and special touches that make the home what the Coletti family envisioned. The house is about the beach and ocean. Great expanses of glass allow for unobstructed views of the dunes and beach beyond. The glass, called turtle glass, is tinted to protect the turtles who would be attracted to brighter lights. It is required on all houses fronting the ocean. Throughout the house, neutral colors with touches of blue create a coordinated space. The porches on the second and third level stretch 75 feet across the beachside of the house. A primary goal was an ocean view from every room. JULY 2021

Bedrooms were kept small to maximize “gathering space” in the center of the house. Flooring is an easy-care tile that looks like wood. One clever detail is the “rug” by the front door entry, which is fashioned out of contrasting pieces of tile. Everything in the house is child-, dog-, and beach-friendly. All area rugs are indoor/outdoor, and upholstered furniture is covered in Sunbrella fabric. An interesting design element in the main living area is the floor-to-ceiling fireplace surround. The unusual beige porcelain tile has the pattern of a sandy beach. The third level of the house has bedrooms for the Coletti children and a very special suite of rooms for younger visitors. A cleverly designed bunk room has bunk beds that will sleep 8. Kathy had fun designing the area and has hopes that sometime in the future the beds will be filled with grandchildren. Playful details like the rattan crab create a child-friendly feel. Portholes in the walls reflect the nautical theme she envisioned. The children’s bathroom is all business, with a trough sink that stretches across one wall. One can imagine youngsters lined up to wash hands side-by-side. JULY 2021

Unique light fixtures throughout the house were designed by Kathy. Her collection of vintage hand-blown Murano glass lanterns purchased in Venice, Italy, became eye-catching light fixtures. “I’ve always considered light fixtures to be the jewelry of a home,” shares Kathy, “so I wanted to create something colorful and unusual with my vintage lanterns.” She credits David Singleton of Bandit’s Outback Antique Lighting on Beech Street for helping her convert the lanterns into dramatic light fixtures. The kitchen is integrated into the main living area. The kitchen has Fisher-Paykel and Kitchenaid appliances. A large farm sink adds an interesting design element. The generously sized large island with its blue and white bistro chairs is a great place for the family to gather. Another corner has a more formal dining area. The Colettis could not be more enthusiastic about the team that built their new home. F
ernandina Beach is always changing. Since the city was born, never was there a time when everyone agreed that no more improvements needed to be made. This persistent drive to improve encourages successful island eateries to cater to the ever-changing tastes and curiosities of the customer, and the Amelia Island Brewing Company is a fine example. Opening ambitiously in 2016 as the Amelia Tavern, they brought a dynamic new look to Centre Street and gave us a local microbrewery of our own. As opportunity presented itself, the company rebranded as AIBC, and in 2021 launched a new taproom next door known as The Alley by AIBC, with the Amelia Tavern now known as The Tavern by AIBC. Each has a unique menu, and both exclusively serve the same premium craft beers. The Tavern is a wide-open space with towering tanks enclosed in glass, a little raucous with a smart vibe, and delicious food. The Alley is a more intimate space, with a biergarten aesthetic and a laid-back atmosphere. On a hopping Thursday afternoon, I sat down with longtime friend Charlie Crosby to enjoy a few frosty beverages and talk about old times. I ordered an Annie Brut IPA, which is citrusy but smooth, light in flavor and easy to drink, although it packs a wallop with a 9.3% APV. Charlie opted for the Margo Peach Wheat, a seasonal offering, a lighter beer at 5% APV, with a delightful peach aroma and a low hop bitterness. At our server’s suggestion, we ordered the Crispy Bacon and Jalapeno Wontons for a snack. The wontons are a cross-cultural experience: crispy Asian rice wrapper with a spicy southwest filling served with a house-made sweet-and-sour sauce. For our second round, Charlie liked the Annie Brut IPA and ordered her own, while I went for the Sm’kn M’rtha, a smoky stout with lots of character. We also ordered a Grilled Shrimp Flatbread. The crispy crust came topped with bubbling hot fig jam, blue cheese, and a snappy balsamic glaze. 66 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
When our glasses were empty, we headed toward the door, where we bumped into our very good friend Mike Stauffer on his way into the Tavern. Our schedule was open, and so we sat once again, this time on the outside patio. We ordered drinks and watched the world walk by. Mike is not a beer man; he is a man of the tropics and enjoys a Captain & Coke as often as not, but Charlie and I were feeling adventurous and tried out the AIBC line of hard seltzers. The Jalapeno Pineapple Guava sounded—and was—most delicious. We ordered a basket of the new Kimchi Fries and Crispy Brussel Sprouts for the table. The company, the drinks, the food, the service, everything was perfect. We sat and swapped stories and enjoyed it all, and as darkness fell and the streetlights came on, we knew it was time to head home. If you’re ready for lunch or dinner, the Tavern is open Tuesday to Sunday. If drinks and snacks are the call, The Alley is open evenings on Wednesday and Thursday and all day Friday to Sunday at 318 and 316 Centre Street respectively. JULY 2021

O
n Amelia Island, we’ve experienced a phenomenal spring and early summer. Cool mornings, shining blue skies, and birds serenading have been the norm. I’ve enjoyed time outdoors every single day, but without a doubt my favorite day outdoors this year was sailing our local waters with Amelia Offshore. Founded and operated by Captain Nate and Amy Parsons, Amelia Offshore is one of the island’s newer adventures. Amy discovered Amelia Island in the early 2000s and decided not to leave! “I loved it so much, I hired movers to deliver my belongings from my home in Beverly Hills, California,” she says. She stayed here until 2013, when she returned to her hometown of Vermilion, Ohio to be near her aging parents, and that’s when she met Nate. Their love story will remind you of a Hallmark Movie, when the hometown girl comes back for a visit and falls in love with a boy from grade school. “That’s exactly us,” laughs Nate. “We went to kindergarten together and were reacquainted at our town’s annual Festival of Fish, and we have been inseparable ever since.” Captain Nate, who was born to the water and learned to captain a boat before he could drive a car, is a seasoned sailor and has been a quick study on the history of Amelia Island and its geography. We met at the Fernandina Beach Harbour Marina, where he welcomed me aboard with a smile. Married to a boat captain myself, I am comfortable on the water, but this was my first time on a sailing adventure. Nate could see that I was a bit unsure of myself, and he quickly put me at ease by explaining the principles of sailing and preparing me for what was ahead. 84 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
As the breeze propelled us north toward Cumberland Island, I was amazed how quiet and peaceful we were. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, a mother and baby dolphin surfaced right beside us. “One of my favorite things about sailing is how close we can get to nature,” shares Nate. “The sailboat makes such a different sound than power boats, and the dolphins are always curious and want to say hello. There are also hundreds of species of birds that are absolutely fascinating.” He went on to tell me how much he’s learned about the differing personalites of Amelia Island’s brown and white pelicans, and how the brown pelicans enjoy the company of humans while the white prefer to stick with their feathered friends.
