Summertime is a time for vacations, for travel to new places and opportunities to explore new things. Most of us grew up enjoying a typical summer vacation with our parents, and most of us have continued that great American tradition of piling into the car with kids and pets and luggage to head off for parts unknown or parts very well-known, i.e. the familiar terrain of the annual family visit. Each summer, we spend a couple of weeks on Cape Cod with members of our families on both sides, as we have been blessed to do for many years. We have time to spend with mothers and fathers, aunts and uncles and cousins, while our kids have a chance to create lasting memories in the surf or by the bonfire with their own cousins. One fun thing about traveling around is the chance to enjoy local festivals and celebrations, celebrations of things that might be unfamiliar to the visitor and a lot of fun to explore. In the small town we visit on the Outer Cape, there is an oyster festival, and down the Cape there are cranberry festivals and probably many more events that we don’t even know about. All are fun community celebrations of some aspect of local culture and history. On Amelia Island, of course, we are very fortunate to have the annual Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, which is one of the best community celebrations in the whole Southeast. Now, in addition to the Shrimp Festival, we have been enjoying a new weekend event for the last few years that is quickly becoming a wonderful tradition: the Great Southern Tailgate Cook-Off. This great event returns to Amelia Island this month on August 23 & 24 at Fernandina Beach’s Main Beach to celebrate the best in southern barbeque—pork, chicken, and beef—and the joys of grilling and smoking with secret rubs and sauces from family recipes, which is such a wonderful part of Southern culture and cuisine. The CookOff is a professional stop on the Kansas City Barbeque Society circuit, and it also has a friendly amateur competition. The event continues to grow each year, and it includes live music and entertainment in addition to all the great barbeque. It is quickly establishing itself as another of Amelia Island’s “don’t miss” events, so be sure to stop by Main Beach that weekend. Elsewhere in this issue, we have a feature on some local boat captains, who are lucky to be doing exactly what they want to be doing; a “Fernandina Faces” profile of Barbara and Frank Cardile; a “Great Homes of Fernandina” feature from Dickie Anderson on the PhelanVerot House; a “Backyard Adventure” with the local petanque club; and much more. See you around the island!

GREAT SOUTHERN
TAILGATE COOK-OFF a AUGUST 23-24 MAIN BEACH c Returning for its fourth year, the popular barbeque event offers great food and lots of fun at the beach. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTOS COURTESY OF GREAT SOUTHERN TAILGATE COOK-OFF
I
f you’re dreaming of beach, brisket, and barbecue, Amelia Island is the place to be on August 23 and 24 for the Fourth Annual Great Southern Tailgate Cook-Off. The event, which features more than 60 professional and backyard teams, is a Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned event, and a fundraiser for the Gator Bowl Association, a non-profit organization whose primary charitable activities are focused on education and youth in the North Florida region. Bring your family, friends, and your biggest appetite to Main Beach and enjoy great entertainment, including live music from national, regional, and local bands, all while experiencing the thrill of this incredible competition. Cheer on your favorite backyard barbecue team as they battle
against other local teams in the Arlington Toyota Backyard Competition, and enjoy the flavors of some of the best barbecue and tailgate food you’ll find anywhere in the country. The Great Southern Tailgate Cook-off is organized by the Amelia Island Convention and Visitors Bureau. This annual event brings professional teams from all over the country to compete for more than $20,000 in cash and prizes. A crowd favorite is the backyard team competition, where local amateur teams compete for over $1,000 in cash and prizes. Competing in the backyard event is Amelia Island’s own Chef Rick Laughlin of The RitzCarlton, Amelia Island’s Salt Restaurant. Laughlin, a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu, considered the

guardian of French culinary technique, spends nearly every day and night working at the restaurant. So what does this talented and accomplished young chef do in his spare time? Cook barbeque, of course. “I love barbeque,” says Laughlin. “My father is the one who got me interested in it. Anytime I’m at home, I’m in the backyard, smoking and grilling.” Laughlin’s whiskey mango sauce, chicken thighs, and ribs will be entered in the competition this year, and Laughlin is hoping for a first place in the backyard division. Two years ago, he received second place for his chicken, and this year he’s back to try again. Last year, the 2012 Grand Champion was B&T BBQ Cook Team, with Git-R-Smoked as 2012 Reserve Grand Champion, and Amelia Island’s own Beach Dawg as 2012 Backyard Champion. The 2012 People’s Choice Champion was Chow’n Down the Q, with Best Dessert by Budmeisters, and Best Sauce by Smokinwilly Squealer’s. This
year, there are 35 teams from across the country, some coming from as far away as New York and Colorado. Local backyard teams include Beach Dawg again this year, and four other Fernandina Beach and Yulee teams attempting to smoke out the Dawg’s barbeque laurels. To compete in the Backyard team competition, the rules are a little different from the professionals. The teams must be true amateurs, which means that they can never have competed in any professional or pro-am competition. The backyard cooks may use gas grills, if they desire. And they will not be judged on pork or brisket. Professional teams will be judged on chicken, pork, ribs, and brisket. The judging is done by a team of six persons. Only judges, contest representatives, and necessary support staff are allowed in the judging area during the judging process. Each judge will first score all the entries for appearance of the meat. The turn-in containers will then be passed around the table and each judge

will place a sample from each of the containers on a special judging mat. The judge will then score each entry for taste and tenderness, before moving on to the next entry.
The Tastiest Job in the World Kansas City Barbeque Society teams are known for cooking some of the best barbeque in the world, but it takes a dedicated team of judges to decide which is truly the best-of-the-best. Being a Certified Barbeque Judge means more than just getting to taste award-winning barbeque, and deciding which barbeque wins those awards. It’s about representing and spreading the message of KCBS, which is to promote America’s favorite cuisine: barbeque. To become a Certified Barbeque Judge, candidates must attend one of the many barbeque classes that are held all over the country. Local judges Barry
Lyle, and his brother, Wendell, received their KCBS certification in 2006, and, this year, they are excited about being part of this exciting Amelia Island event. “Being a judge is all about the pursuit of the best barbeque,” says Barry. “What we learned through the certification process is how to judge each entry individually. There are certain criteria that makes good barbeque.” For Barry, who loves all barbeque, pulled pork has always been his favorite. And served with an ice cold beer, adds Barry. “Nothing is better than that.” Kansas City Barbeque Society provides the most respected form of judging and scoring in the world of barbeque. KCBS provides a representative for each sanctioned contest, and an appropriate number of certified barbeque judges who have been trained in how to judge world-class barbeque, all while using a blind judging process that is fair and void of

personal knowledge of teams being judged. KCBS judges are trained in a manner that allows them to appropriately judge all types of barbeque, from St. Louis and Texas styles, to Memphis and Carolina styles. Sanctioned contests are held in every region of the country, and as a result receive the same fair, unbiased, trained judging process. KCBS conducts official competitions at each sanctioned event in the following categories: chicken, ribs, pork and brisket. A KCBS judge evaluates barbeque in three different criteria: taste, appearance and texture.
From Pig Pickin’ to a Professional Sport
Barbeque seems to have originated in the South, although cooking meat over a hot fire has been around since the beginning of time. According to estimates, prior to the Civil War, Southerners ate
around five pounds of pork for every one pound of beef they consumed. Because of the poverty of the southern United States at this time, every part of the pig was eaten immediately or saved for later. Because of the effort to capture and cook these wild hogs, pig slaughtering became a time for celebration, and the neighborhood would be invited to share in the bounty. These feasts were sometimes called “pig pickins,” and the traditional Southern barbecue grew out of these gatherings. These days, barbeque includes beef brisket, chicken, ribs, along with the traditional pork, and just about anything else that can go on the grill or into a smoker. Served up with barbeque sauce, a mess of coleslaw, pickles, and biscuits or cornbread, barbeque is a true American tradition all over the nation. And today, creating the best barbeque has

become a professional sport, of sorts, where teams compete for big prizes, cash, and professional recognition. With television networks like Food Network covering many of these barbeque competitions, cooking up great barbeque can become a rags to riches story, creating overnight barbeque super stars. In addition to the Cook-off, the Amelia Island Convention and Visitors Bureau has announced a partnership with Smithfield® Rib Super Series. One of just twelve high-profile Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned events to participate in the series, the Great Southern Tailgate Cook-off will offer professional teams added incentive for competing in the 2013 event. “As we enter our second year of the Smithfield Rib Super Series, we couldn’t overlook the passion that the Amelia Island area has for barbeque,” said Kristen Orr, associate brand manager for Smithfield
Foodservice. “Florida is a rapidly growing market for us, so we’re excited to expand our brand presence at this popular event.” The Smithfield® Rib Super Series is a points chase competition with bonus money payouts for the top three finalists in the ribs category at each contest, and overall. All participating teams will also receive two complimentary racks of Smithfield Spareribs to use as their turn-in or for experimentation. Teams participating in the points chase will also earn points based on their finishing position at their best four events in the series, making them eligible for additional bonus Grand Prize money. The Great Southern Tailgate Cook-off begins at 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23 and 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24. Barbeque lovers will be able to enjoy free entertainment throughout the two-day

ELIZABETH POINTE LODGE RANKED NO. 2 BY TRAVEL+LEISURE MAGAZINE
TIMOTI’S FRY SHAK ONE OF COASTAL LIVING’S 22 FAVORITE SEAFOOD DIVES Each year, Coastal Living Magazine chooses its favorite seafood dives from all of America’s coasts, and, for 2013, Timoti’s Fry Shak made it onto their list of favorites. Restaurants are not chosen for their ambience or gourmet flair, but for their great seafood, although Amelia Islanders would hardly call Timoti’s a “dive.” In Fernandina Beach, Timoti’s offers some the best and freshest local seafood, a beachy atmosphere with family-friendly picnic tables, and even a pirate ship for children to play on if their parents want to linger over their dinners. Coastal Living mentions their fried shrimp and clam strips, as well as the fact that the restaurant is nestled in the Historic District. Timoti’s is owned by Tim and Theresa Poynter of Café Karibo, which is located next door. “We are so honored to have received this recognition,” says Tim. “It’s a testament to our fine staff, Carlin, Brian, and also to all of our customers who have patronized us over the last year. We couldn’t ask for anything better than that!” To read Coastal Living’s article, visit their web site at www.coastalliving.com.
Elizabeth Pointe Lodge has been listed in Travel+Leisure’s 2013 World’s Best Awards as one of the top inns and small lodges in the continental United States. In addition, Elizabeth Pointe Lodge is ranked No. 25 on their Best Awards list of Top 100 Hotels overall. The awards were published in the July 2013 print edition and the digital editions at www. travelandleisure.com. Elizabeth Pointe Lodge received a special mention in the article: “U.S. properties represent nearly 20 percent of the Top 50 list, from Triple Creek Ranch (No. 13), with 23 intimate cabins with wood-burning fireplaces in western Montana to Elizabeth Pointe Lodge (No. 25) on Amelia Island, Florida, with its turn-of-the-century-inspired décor and enormous marble soaking tubs.” Every year, Travel+Leisure readers vote on their favorite hotels, resorts, spas, airlines, cruise lines, tour operators, rental car agencies, and more in the publication’s World’s Best Awards survey. The honor is considered a testament to how well various establishments serve Travel+Leisure readers as they explore the world. For more information about Elizabeth Pointe Lodge, call (904) 277-4851 or visit www.elizabethpointelodge.com.

Not at this “Murder in Fernandina” Mystery Dinner, featuring a local story about a modern murder mystery in Fernandina Beach that ties into the city’s history of pirates and buried treasure. A murder took place in Fernandina, and you’ll get to figure out whodunit, all while dining at David’s Restaurant & Lounge on Thursday, August 8. David’s will be serving a three-course dinner and house wine, while a winner’s name pulled from the wine bucket will receive a $200 gift card to dine at David’s the next time they visit the restaurant, if they’re not murdered! You’ll also meet Amelia Clinch, author of Murder in Fernandina, and receive a signed copy book as a gift from David’s to you. Actors will surround you in three separate acts, with two seatings at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. The event is rated PG-13, suitable for teens and adults. ohn Mead started his framing business in his mother’s garage, calling it “The Framery.” He had just finished college when he began offering framing services to the local community in 1972. Forty years later, Mead’s Framery & Trophy Store, located in Yulee at the corner of A1A and US 17, is still providing custom framing services, trophies, awards, engraving, and so much more to the Yulee and Amelia Island communities. There is no limit to what can be framed at Mead’s. Devon Thornton, John’s niece and frame design specialist, is amazed at the variety of items customers want to have framed, from priceless antique artwork and a child’s first finger painting to sports memorabilia and military medals. “We have over 1,000 frames to choose from, along with creative matting. Our frames will enhance and preserve any of your precious or collectable items or artwork, which will be enjoyed for years to come,” says Devon. “One of our most recent and unique framing jobs was for a Battlestar Galactica panorama, where we cut the frame into an octagon instead of the typical rectangle to fit the trend
in the show. It was so unique, and our client was very pleased with the results.” You can also find regional artwork, prints, and even gifts at Mead’s. Mead’s is a family affair, with Devon’s mother and John’s sister, Ida Cox, as the shop’s award specialist and designer. The business is proud of their prompt services completed on-premises, which include trophies, plaques, engraving, ribbons, signs, and name plates. Hundreds of customers from local community organizations have utilized Mead’s over the years, including schools, businesses, and charities. John, Devon, and Ida frequently attend trade shows, seminars, and classes, to keep up with the newest trends and techniques. Mead’s Framery & Trophy Store is a member of the professional Picture Framers Association and the Awards and Recognition Association, but the best recognition they receive is from their customers. People shop at Mead’s for the high-quality framing and what keeps them coming back is the personalized care and integrity of this small family-run specialty shop. anet Sitnick lived in South Florida, where her husband, Al, worked as a charter boat captain and Janet owned a fabric business before the couple moved to Amelia Island ten years ago. Janet loved having her own business, so it was natural that she would open a business on Amelia. Janet’s love for the sea and all its treasures, for collectibles, and for home decorating led her to open a shop on Centre Street called Sea Breeze Amelia. After six years at that location, Janet moved her shop to Palmetto Walk, located at 4924 First Coast Highway, where she has expanded her island gift selection. “You’ll always find a treasure here at our store,” says Janet, who uses local divers to obtain the myriad of shark teeth and seashells available in the store. “And we also carry many fossils, including rare, fossilized Great White shark teeth, and dinosaur fossils.” Many of Sea Breeze’s gift offerings are nature-oriented items, such as geodes from Brazil, shell and horn handbags, and one-of-a-kind jewelry created from shells and gemstones. “We are a place where the locals shop, as well as island visitors,” says Janet. “We carry everything from beach wear to dinnerware!” Indeed, there is something for everyone at Sea Breeze, including local art, casual island clothing, hand-painted tiles, sterling silver jewelry, hand-crafted treasure boxes, Gaspari greetings cards and napkins, handmade soaps, and eclectic sculptures made from recycled motorcycle parts. Sea Breeze is open seven days a week. For more information, call them at (904) 277-0607 or visit www.seabreezeamelia.com.
owland’s Upholstery Plus is celebrating their sixtieth year of business this year, proud to be the oldest surviving business in Nassau County that has been owned and operated by the same family. Opened in 1953 by Willard and Earl Rowland, the business provided upholstery and furniture in the location where the Crab Trap Restaurant is today. In 1955, their brother, Lewis Rowland, and his wife, Doretha, joined them and eventually bought them out, moving the business to its present location. Lewis and Doretha ran the business and worked alongside their employees in the workroom, employing many talented family members along the way. The business eventually expanded into a full-scale custom decorating showroom and workroom. Today, the owners are Wallace Rowland and Arlene Rowland Scott, Lewis and Doretha’s children. Clayton Rowland, Wallace’s son, recently joined the business. “We do all of our work in-house,” says Arlene, “and all of our work is hand-sewn and custom upholstered. It’s a fine art.” Rowland’s Upholstery Plus offers re-upholstery, custom-built upholstered furniture, draperies, valances, cornices, bedding, and carpeting. Being in the business of re-upholstery, Rowland’s is an environmentally-friendly business. “We have kept furniture out of our landfills for the last 60 years!” says Wallace. Today, Rowland’s clients are as loyal as ever. “We are so grateful to our customers for their business,” says Arlene. A Life on Water Surrounded by the Amelia River and the Atlantic Ocean, Amelia Island offers some the opportunity to build a life on the water. BY MARY MAGUIRE
S
ome people jump on boats and immediately know that a life on the water offers them greater balance. Steely determination is needed for life on the water. People who pilot boats face many challenges, such as maintaining their vessels and managing their crews according to strict industry regulations, while constantly monitoring weather conditions. Amelia Island is home to a range of pleasure boats, tour operations, and commercial fishing boats, and with them come captains who hold a steady hand on the wheel. Barry Woods, who owns the Island Girl, a 73-foot shrimp boat out of the downtown marina, first hopped on his father’s shrimp boat out of St. Mary’s, Georgia more than 50 years ago at the age of six. “This is hard work,” says Woods, tugging at one of his boat’s shrimp nets while guiding a visitor around the wooden vessel. His two-man crew is meeting him on the boat at 4:30 a.m., which is less than ten hours away, for a four-day hunt. The plan is to anchor somewhere off the coast of Cumberland Island. “I don’t know what we’ll get,” says Woods, who will sell his haul to a local wholesaler. “You can’t do this job for the money; you have to do it because you love it.”
One of the most popular boat captains on the local waterfront is Kevin McCarthy, owner of Amelia River Cruises. McCarthy started the popular boat tour business in 2000, regaling riders with a combination of stories about his seafaring family from Gloucester, Massachusetts, and historical perspective courtesy of his wife, Cecilia, whose family is among Amelia Island’s first settlers. “Any credibility I have comes from her,” says McCarthy about his wife, whose family first operated the lighthouse in Fernandina Beach and Cumberland Island. “When the boat rides around Cumberland, I can reference family connections dating back more than 300 years.” “I’m totally intoxicated by the sea and can’t imagine doing anything else,” says Lori Hoerl, a pilot-in-training for the Mayport ferry. She works as a deckhand now, but holds a Master 100-ton license, meaning she can pilot Coast Guardinspected vessels up to 100 tons and carry passengers. Hoerl is a former guide for Amelia River Cruises. “I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life that would take me away from the water,” she says. continued on page 65

Barbara & Frank
Cardile
BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTO BY ELIZABETH WILKES PHOTOGRAPHY
I
t is hard not to imagine Frank Cardile in uniform and very much in charge. His proud stature and confident manner suggest a leader, and a leader he was and is. He is a proud graduate of West Point, who was twice awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, as well as the Silver Star with oak leaf cluster and many other military awards and decorations. He was named Brigadier General of the United States Air Force in July 1988. The Distinguished Service Medal is his highest military decoration, and the Silver Star, officially referred to as the Silver Star Medal by all the United States Armed Forces, is the third highest military decoration for valor. It is awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States. Originally from New York, he graduated from West Point and opted to join the Air Force. He wanted to fly, and fly he did! He has earned more than 4,200 flying hours, which include 97 combat rescue missions behind enemy lines. Based in Da Nang, he flew behind enemy lines to rescue downed pilots. A master storyteller, Cardile describes rescue missions that would make a best-selling Hollywood movie. The Cardiles recently attended the fiftieth reunion of his class at West Point. They describe an emotional and enjoyable reunion, where over 200 of the original 500 graduates returned. After combat duty, Cardile continued his education, earning degrees at Stanford and Auburn, and he has taught engineering at his alma mater, West Point. After his military service, Frank was president of Betac Corporation and president of ACS Defense. Later, he was vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Professional Services. Frank will be the first to share that his wife of 46 years, Barbara, is his best friend, steadfast supporter, and confidant. She too enjoyed a distinguished career as a registered nurse, specializing in psychiatric and medical nursing while raising four children. The Cardiles are proud grandparents of seven grandchildren. After retirement in 2007, Frank and Barbara Cardile found Amelia Island and built a home on Amelia Island Plantation. They are now bringing their many talents to the island. Their home is full of wonderful collected memories. Artwork, mementos from the places they have lived and traveled to,
and a collection of scale model replica ships that have been meticulously built. After reading Gavin Menzies’s 1421: The Year China Discovered America, Frank was intrigued by the fifteenth century Chinese treasure ships and decided to build a scale replica. Truly a team effort, Barbara helped with research at the Library of Congress. Working from blue prints that he drew, the project took three years. Their current project? A late nineteenth century clipper ship. Throughout the Cardile home there are flags, and each one has a story. One flag was given to Cardile upon retirement. It was flown over all the bases where he had served in his 29 years in the U.S. Air Force. Cardile’s office displays his “General’s Flag,” the flag traditionally flown on a base to indicate the presence of the ranking officer in charge of the facility. Frank currently serves as treasurer of the Amelia Island Club, and chairman of the board of Andrews Federal Credit Union. He is often seen enjoying a game of golf at the Long Point course. Barbara enjoys her children, grandchildren, reading, sewing, and travel. Together, they have made Amelia Island their home.

The Phelan-Verot House BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTO BY JAN JOHANNES

uilt in the final year of the Civil War, the charming little cottage is a frame vernacular with a transom over the door and chamfered posts with jig-saw cut brackets. It is a one and half-story house best described as Folk Victorian. It is most noted for being the home of the Sister’s of St. Joseph, an order of Catholic nuns from LePuy, France. The sisters were brought to the island to educate its children. The school they established thrived, and an academy and convent school was started in 1882. On the site of the original school is another amazing preservation project, which can be found on Calhoun Street between Fourth and Fifth streets. St. Michael Academy, which currently occupies the original building, with its galleried porch, Mansard roof, and classic lines, is one of the more beautiful of Amelia Island’s many church-related structures. The Sisters of St. Joseph brought to Amelia Island to teach grew famous for their beautiful French lace, jams, and jellies, and they used the funds they generated from sales to help fund the school. In 1875, Jean Pierre Augustin Verot, Bishop of St. Augustine, purchased this cottage for $900 for the sisters.
In 1877, during one of the island’s worst yellow fever epidemics, the sisters nursed the sick and dying. It is estimated that 1,600 people lived on the island at that time, and over one thousand contracted the disease. The nuns were called the “Angel’s of Mercy.” They sewed the shrouds for the dead, and people would throw needles and thread weighted with rocks on the nun’s porch to avoid being exposed to the much-feared fever. Two of the sisters lost their lives in the epidemic. Long after the epidemic, when their bodies were moved from temporary graves to Bosque Bello Cemetery, witnesses reported that the bodies were unchanged, and a fragrance of roses emanated from the grave site. By 1993, the house was in great disrepair and became the center of controversy. The church that owned the house and the land it was on wanted to expand its parking lot and tear down the house. The house had long been abandoned and was literally falling down. The church chose not to repair it or try to save it. However, a group of passionate preservationists, the Amelia Island Restoration Foundation, was able to save it. It was renovated and is now a beautifully preserved and important historical property.

in the garden
perfect perennials With the hot, sultry days of summer here, it’s time to go back to basics with some hardy perennials.
BY BETTY MORRELL
T
his month, we are in the hazy, hot, and humid days of summer. They call it the “dog days of summer,” which is “when Sirius, the Dog Star, rises at the same time as the sun, and is a period marked by lethargy, inactivity or indolence” (Webster’s College Dictionary). That hot, sultry period of summer runs from late July to early September. Now we are reminded why we garden mostly in the spring and fall! However, it is never too late or too early to get back to basic perennial plants that will bloom through the dog days of summer. How about the Mexican Petunia, in purple and pinks? Not only will they withstand the heat of summer, they will last the winter. They need to be contained, but they are so pretty and attract hummingbirds and butterflies, which adds even more beauty and interest to your garden. Bush Daisy is also a great addition to any perennial bed, as it blooms with vibrant yellow flowers from spring through fall. It may die back in a hard freeze, but will bounce back in spring. This may be a new one for some of you: Burbidgea Scheizochella, a
TIP O F T HE M O N T H If your lawn looks like it needs some fertilization, do so at the end of August or early September. Use a 16-4-8 fertilizer. You can also use Milorganite or liquid iron on your lawn, which will safely green it up.
Dwarf Orange Ginger, which brings both brilliance of color and reliability to any container garden. In our area, it can be put in the ground. Intermittently through the year, bright golden orange cones will appear above glossy dark green, maroon-backed leaves. Individual flowers will open and last about two weeks. The heaviest blooming periods are in the summer and winter, making it perfect for both home and garden. Outdoors, this plant likes mostly shade. There is a rare dwarf version of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow called Morning, Noon and Night. It is a compact two to three foot tall bush with fragrant flowers that open purple, fade to lavender, then white, just like the YTT. One of my favorite plants in the garden is the Sambac Jasmine, also
43 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • AUGUST 2013
known as Arabian jasmine. Like most of the other jasmines, it is easy to grow in almost any moist soil. It likes full sun to partial shade, and needs lots of water during the summer growing season, but watering can be reduced in the winter. The Sambac jasmine is a tropical plant that grows outdoors in zones 8 and 9, where it will freeze to the ground in winter, but return from its roots in spring. Sambac can grow six to ten feet in height and width, but, because of our hard freezes, it will stay much smaller. Be sure to mulch this plant before the freezes get real bad. The downside to this plant is that because of the freezes, it doesn’t start blooming until late in the year, usually August or September. Arabian Jasmine is often grown in a pot on the deck or patio in summer and brought indoors in the winter. Prune frequently to maintain a desirable shape. Some people put the plant in a large pot by the door, so you can smell its sweet perfume every time you walk by. As always, e-mail any questions to bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

orth Carolinians Maureen and John Ausura were searching for a second home and found exactly what they were looking for on Amelia Island. Maureen Ausura, Chief of Human Resources for Lowe’s Companies, Inc., welcomes the serene quiet of the condo on the Amelia River as a retreat from her busy life. John, recently retired, spent his career in operational and corporate finance and restructuring in multiple industries, and he continues working on boards and with nonprofit organizations.
When friends bought a unit in The Landings at Amelia River, a small condominium development on the south end with breathtaking views of the Intracoastal Waterway, the couple realized it had everything on their wish list. It offered a conveniently located gated community, beautifully landscaped property, access to golf courses, a private airport nearby, and a welcoming community with amenities galore. They teamed with Julie Newton Bennett of J. Newton Interiors to create a serene space that offers the perfect stage to

Coffered detail in the living room ceiling adds a sophisticated finishing detail to the timeless space. The living room is dominated by a nontraditional and stunning fireplace surround. The couple asked Bennett to incorporate a unique, multi-colored glass mosaic tile in the remodel. The tile, imported from Italy, includes a variety of colors that are picked up throughout the condominium. A beautiful sculpture by Tennessee artist Emily Wilson, who has

The dining room is defined by a unique hand-blown Murano glass chandelier hanging over a Restoration Hardware dining table. Highlights of soft grey-blue tie together rooms that open one onto the other. The far end of the condominium offers timeless views of the Amelia River and its marshes. Common docks reach out into the river. The couple plans to keep their newly purchased Pursuit boat in front of their home and explore together the intriguing waterways and marshes wandering through the barrier islands off the coast of northeast Florida. Owners and designer have fashioned a space that is flooded with elegant shades of blue, white, and grey, creating a peaceful landing place for the busy professional couple.

Sandy Bottoms BEACH BAR & GRILL
At Sandy Bottoms, you can enjoy tropical drinks and delicious seafood with your toes in the sand. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
S
andy Bottoms is a restaurant that harmonizes beautiful views of the beach with some of the tastiest dishes and beverages on the island. The only restaurant where you can sit directly on the beach and slip your toes in the sand while enjoying a tropical libation and a plate of crabby bites, my beau Bruce and I love to hang out at Sandy Bottoms. Sunday afternoon is our favorite island time of the week, and recently we went to Sandy Bottoms for dinner and live music. Pili Pili was playing all of our Bob Marley favorites, and our server, Justin, suggested we try one of their most popular beverages, a Kahlua Colada, and we were happy to oblige. A pina colada with Kahlua added to it, this was a rich and creamy drink. Topped with whipped cream and a cherry, it was a grand way to start our Sandy Bottoms dining experience. I was eager to try their Mango Pecan Salad, and that’s exactly what Justin suggested we order. The fresh spinach leaves were topped with mango, Feta cheese, crushed pecans, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and a homemade garlic balsamic vinaigrette. This is the perfect summer salad—refreshing and delightful, and just a little sweet. Justin also brought us a plate of Crab Stuffed Mushrooms, fresh mushroom caps stuffed with their crabby bite mix, cream cheese, Parmesan cheese, mozzarella cheese, all baked in a garlic butter sauce. We loved this dish, which was very rich and cheesy, with the flavor of that good crab shining through. I kept pushing the dish away to save room for dinner, but Bruce kept pulling it back, and eventually kept it on his side to the table for himself! I was looking forward to sampling the Seafood Platter, a delicious trio of mahi mahi, shrimp, and scallops. We like to have our fish blackened, and that was a good choice after our rich appetizer. These days, when people are trying to be a little more health conscious, I love seeing lots of fruit and vegetables on plates instead of fries and hushpuppies, and this plate has all of that. The fish, shrimp, and scallops were coated in a spicy seasoning, and served with coconut curry rice, with a lovely
vegetable medley, and a huge portion of fresh fruit salsa. The fish was nicely cooked, the rice interesting and tasty, and the vegetables, squash, mushrooms, peppers, and onions were sautéed tender crisp. The fruit salsa, a combination of diced strawberries, mango, kiwi, and onions, is a great accompaniment to blackened fish. We were ready to try another of Sandy Bottoms’ yummy drinks, so we ordered A Day at the Beach. This drink is made with two kinds of rum, pineapple juice, amaretto, orange juice,
and grenadine. It is so sweet and refreshing that it’s easy to gulp it down, but I suggest taking your time with this one! We also had Key Lime Pie, which is made in-house. Sandy Bottoms’ specialty is the baked variety, sweet and custardy, and a little tart, served drizzled with raspberry sauce. A fine afternoon of beach, fresh seafood, and tropical drinks; I almost thought I was on vacation for a minute. Now that I think about it, I guess I was. A Life on Water from page 29. That includes singing and acting on Broadway, which Hoerl did throughout her 20’s. She studied opera in college and then took her voice to the stage, where she sang and danced. Her dream job now is to captain a research vessel. “There aren’t many openings, and being a woman in what has typically been a man’s industry might make it more difficult, but I’ll keep trying,” she says. If the amount of time spent writing about boating and fishing is any barometer of affection, then Terry Lacoss is head over heels in love with the water. Lacoss, owner of Amelia Angler Outfitters, has written three guidebooks on sport fishing and frequently contributes to industry publications. He operates a respected tour boat operation for deep sea and backwater fishing from a busy storefront on Centre Street in downtown Fernandina Beach. “I grew up in Vermont, but I’ve always loved the water,” says Lacoss. His tour boat outings receive rave reviews, and photos on the walls of his shop include clients with wide smiles holding big fish. “The biggest we’ve had was a 500 lb. hammerhead,” says Lacoss. “That was a whopper.” Boaters needing maintenance help—from small repairs to top-tobottom overhauls—can head up to Old Town, where Bill Kavanaugh owns and operates Tiger Point Marina & Boat Works. He is also a river pilot for the Port of Fernandina. “We can handle boats up to 65 feet and 50 tons here,” he says, standing in the shadow of the lift that pulls boats in and out of the water. Tiger Point Marina offers deep water wet slips, and boats from all over the country, including Maryland, Colorado, and Washington state, are in dry dock. Like other people who make their living on the water, Kavanaugh says it’s hard work, but he loves the labor. “There’s something that attracts you to the water and won’t let you quit,” he says. “I don’t know if it’s a calling, but it is all-consuming and fulfilling.”

A
pétanque in the park BY TERI SOPP • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
t a recent fundraising dinner, my boyfriend, Billy, and I were seated at a table with John and Penny Bonvouloir. We learned that John, originally from Canada, spoke fluent French, and he and Billy started chatting en français, which led to them talking about the French boules game, pétanque. It turned out that the Bonvouloirs were competing in a tournament the very next morning, and they invited us to come along. Billy and I showed up at the pétanque (pronounced “pay-tonk”) courts the next morning to watch and tried our hands at a few throws. Pétanque is a little like bocce combined with horseshoes and marbles: players throw a baseball-sized steel ball to a target on a sand court, then opponents try to land their balls closer to the target (or “pig”), knock the first player’s ball away, or hit the target so it is moved to a new spot. Billy had played when he lived in France some time back, so we decided we would buy a set of balls (boules) and show up the next weekend. Philippe Boets, the owner of Pétanque America, runs his business supplying pétanque equipment all across America out of a warehouse near Sadler Road. I stopped in to purchase my set of boules (a starter set of six basic balls is $25), and Philippe explained how the Saturday morning games work. Each player randomly draws a card to determine on what team he or she will play, which spreads all the best players around. More seasoned players are always ready to help out, Philippe explained, and it’s fun whether you are an experienced player or not. Billy and I showed up the following Saturday and picked cards assigning us to different teams. More experienced players were quick to help with techniques, rules, and scorekeeping. The less-experienced players generally throw first, standing a circle at the end of the court. The “cochon” or “pig,” is thrown and the first player pitches a ball toward the target. The best players or “shooters” generally go last, trying to blast the other team’s balls away from the pig with a direct hit, or to move the pig. Billy turned out to be a pro. I had some beginners luck, but definitely needed some coaching. I learned a little and laughed a lot, and we had a great time. The Amelia Island pétanque crowd is a lot of fun and very welcoming to newcomers. That first Saturday I played on a winning team, but the results were varied the following two weekends. Nonetheless, I plan to keep showing up, even if I never quite make it as a pro! Speaking of pros, the Petanque America Open, the largest petanque tournament in the United States, returns to Amelia Island on November 9-10, 2013, so there’s still plenty of time to get ready! In the summer, pétanque is played at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday at courts at the west end of Central Park. During the winter, play is moved to the courts at the south end of the Fernandina Harbor Marina parking lot. No special dress or shoes are necessary, just dress comfortably. The Amelia Island Boules Club is happy to help you get started. Email club president Jimmy Weinsier at jimmyfw45@gmail.com, visit www. petanqueamerica.com, or call Philippe Boets at (904) 491-1190.
