Anyone on Amelia Island who is a senior, or who has a loved one who is a senior, knows about the Nassau County Council on Aging (NCCOA). With a wide range of programs and services that touch upon many aspects of daily life, including meals, various activities for seniors, and transportation, the Council on Aging serves a great number of people. And that number is growing each year as the population of Amelia Island grows. In 2017, the Council on Aging experienced a 16% increase in the number of members served in Nassau County. Started by George Crady, its first chairman, with a community affairs grant in 1974, the Council on Aging has grown steadily since its inception. The mission of the NCCOA is to help seniors by providing services of compassionate care that foster independence and help seniors remain active, valued members of the community. In 2008, the Nassau County Council on Aging decided to increase the number of services offered and purchase a new building to provide added space through its “Building for Our Future” campaign. In early 2016, the Council on Aging settled on the Rayonier building at Island Walkway, a large 28,500 square foot facility centrally located on the island. NCCOA President and CEO Janice Ancrum has been at the helm for the last six years as the organization has purchased the building and prepared for the opening of its new facility. “From our humble beginnings, we now serve close to 3,000 seniors each year, and we expect to double that number following the move into our new building at Island Walkway,” says Ancrum. One way that NCCOA is expanding its services is through its new Nutrition Support System, championed by State Sen. Aaron Bean, which will provide nourishing meals for homebound seniors and low-income veterans. Other services include Meals on Wheels, Adult Day Healthcare, and various home health services, as well as medical screenings, health and wellness classes, exercise classes, and a new membership program. Our hats are off to Janice and her staff for making this exciting new facility a reality for Nassau County. Also this month, we explore the “Shrimp Days of Summer,” a new late-summer celebration of shrimping on Amelia Island with a variety of activities, events, and special offers; we learn about Communities in Schools Nassau County, which works in our local schools by empowering students to stay in school and achieve their dreams; we learn about Civil War projectiles from Ft. Clinch Park Ranger Frank Ofeldt – and we learn how to fire them; we discover some refreshing summer wines and spirits that will help you beat the heat this year; and much more.

n late 1974, George Crady had just lost his second political race to serve in the Florida House of Representatives. Around the same time, he received a call from a woman in the federal Department of Community Affairs asking if he would be interested in starting an agency in Nassau County that would serve senior citizens. “I was told the organization could apply for a grant from Community Affairs and could possibly organize the local groups that were helping the elderly,” says Crady. “I began by calling together the scattered groups of people for a meeting to discuss the future agency. The response from the public was overwhelming, and volunteers were abundant. Our meetings were monthly and consistently grew larger over time.” 11 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
Crady was elected chairman of the organization, named the Council on Aging (COA) at the request of the Department of Community Affairs. Elsie Harper was elected Secretary and Edgar Lindsey was elected Treasurer. “We voted to start with three divisions,” says Crady. “After winning the grant from Community Affairs, we rented an office and hired a young lady to answer the phones in the Referral Division, which was named ‘How Can We Help?’ The second division was the ‘Meals on Wheels’ program, which was headed by Elsie, and the third division, headed by Edgar, was ‘Transportation.’” The Council on Aging’s mission was to help seniors (adults over the age of 60) by providing services of compassionate care that foster independence and help their clients remain

active, valued members of the community. George Crady’s tenure included publicizing the COA’s mission with grassroots marketing, such as walking through town in a stocking cap asking people to help seniors in the community. Fast forward more than four decades. Today’s Nassau County Council on Aging served 2,876 members in 2017, a 16% increase over the previous year, with 183 volunteers donating 9,746 hours for an in-kind monetary value of $235,268.14. Earlier this year, the Council was named the “2017 Nonprofit of the Year” by the Nassau County Chamber of Commerce. NCCOA President & CEO Janice Ancrum has “come home” to the Council, having worked for the organization when she was 16 years old, her very first job. “I came to work all dressed up with high heels, excited, and ready for my first real job,” says Ancrum. “Little did I know I would be sent to someone’s home to weed the garden! After that, I spent all summer weeding and working outside. It was an experience I’ll never forget. But it was very satisfying, knowing I was helping seniors in need.” Ancrum has been with NCCOA for six years, and the growth she has seen within the organization and the seniors served is phenomenal. From volunteers to staff, board members to community leaders, the agency’s success is due to a team effort. “There are so many stories, especially from the very beginning, of how we worked together to make the vision of truly taking care of seniors a reality. I remember hearing about the generosity of Buddy Jacobs for his legal expertise and strategic guidance throughout the process of the Council receiving its 501(c)(3) status,” Ancrum relates. “The agency did not have the funding to pay for his services, so he agreed to be paid in lemon meringue pies! From our humble beginnings, we now serve close to 3,000 seniors each year, and we expect to double that number following the move into our new building at Island Walkway.” In 2008, NCCOA had a vision to increase their services and purchase their own building to help meet the needs of a growing senior population. At present, they lease the building adjacent to Baptist Medical Center Nassau. “Baptist has been extremely generous to the Council on Aging; in fact, they are our lifeline,” says Ancrum. “They’ve been taking care of the maintenance and upkeep of the building and grounds and charging us a nominal fee for the lease. But we’ve outgrown the building, and realized we’d have to take the next step. “Ten years ago, we initiated the “Building for Our Future” campaign. We looked at six properties, and in early 2016, we settled on the Rayonier building at 1901 Island Walkway,” says 12 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Ancrum. “At more than 28,500 square feet, it’s the perfect size and it’s centrally located, with plenty of space to provide the increased services and activities we need to serve our seniors in Nassau County.” The organization is leasing a portion of the building to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, and it also has 17 single-office executive suites. The space features conference rooms, a media lounge and café, computer lab, fitness center, game room, and a Grand Hall with commercial kitchen, which can be leased for special events. “Our goal is to serve all seniors, not just a few,” says Ancrum. “The Council on Aging is a community organization for everyone, seniors and their families. Our Adult Day HealthCare for people with dementia provides a respite for caregivers and family members. Our classes and activities are open to adults of all ages, and you don’t have to be a senior!” “In spite of our successes and accomplishments, Hurricane Irma threw us a curveball last September,” says Ancrum. “Our dream of moving into our new building in early 2018 was put on hold as the powerful storm caused more than $1.4 million in catastrophic damage, mostly to the roof and building structure. But in Irma’s aftermath, many heroes have come to our rescue!” Generous donors have also contributed to the new building through a capital campaign, and the community has stayed in touch with NCCOA’s progress. “Geoff Clear, Board of Directors Vice Chair and Capital Campaign CoChair, as well as our temporary ‘Building Superintendent,’ has worked tirelessly with a steady stream of architects, contractors, engineers, adjusters, and the insurance company on behalf of our seniors to help resolve the many post-hurricane issues,” notes Ancrum. “For his extraordinary efforts, Geoff received the 2017 Elsie Harper Volunteer of the Year Award during the Nassau County Volunteer Center’s 33rd annual Volunteer Awards Luncheon.” Earlier this year, the state budget featured one line item especially important to Nassau County: a $400,000 Nutrition Support Program for 20,000 Northeast Florida seniors, awarded to NCCOA and soon-to-be housed at 1901 Island Walkway. Championed by State Sen. Aaron Bean (R-Fernandina Beach) and State Rep. Cord Byrd, (R-Neptune Beach), the program will help fight hunger by providing warm, nourishing meals for homebound and nutritionally challenged seniors, as well as more than doubling the number of seniors served through nutrition programs by 2020. 14 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

“Our commercial kitchen will house the Nutrition Support Program, provide the nutrition Nassau County seniors deserve, and allow us to deliver nutritious meals to lowincome veterans of all ages,” says Ancrum. “It will also provide emergency assistance as a disaster response center with backup generators. Of course, we hope to never have to offer this important resource, but we’ll be ready.”
PROGRAMS AND SERVICES FOR SENIORS NCCOA’s mission has evolved to reflect the needs of a changing population. Their mission is to enhance the lives of older adults through services and compassionate care designed to improve the health, independence, and economic security of Nassau County seniors and their families. Currently, Nassau County Council on Aging serves seniors by providing vitally important resources such as case management, nutrition, and Adult Day HealthCare. NCCOA also partners with local and state-funded programs to assist with home energy crises (EHEAP) and facilitate City of Fernandina Beach wastewater, refuse, and/or storm water fee exemption applications for qualified residents. Case managers provide seniors, families, and caretakers information on resources, programs, and supportive services available to seniors and their caregivers in Nassau County. These services help seniors to age in place and navigate local, state, and federal systems necessary to the aging process. For those seniors receiving state and federal grant subsidized services in Nassau County, NCCOA’s case management ensures services are provided in compliance with the Department of Elder Affairs. Nutrition managers oversee the Life Centers in Fernandina Beach and Hilliard, where congregate meals are offered daily. They also manage Nassau County’s Meals on Wheels home-delivered meals program. More than 2,200 balanced nutritious meals are delivered by volunteers each month to those who are homebound due to illness, disability, or isolation. Meal delivery also allows volunteer drivers to perform regular safety and wellness checks. In addition, these volunteers provide Meals on Wheels for Pets, which ensures that homebound seniors receive necessary pet food and supplies for their companions. The organization’s Adult Day HealthCare, the only one of its kind in Northeast Florida and affectionately known as “The Club,” is supervised by a licensed nurse and Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP) and promotes each member’s daily success, 16 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

SENIOR LIFE CENTERS “Our new home at 1901 Island Walkway will open in September for staff, and in October for the community,” says Ancrum. “This facility will help us provide even greater programs and services at our Fernandina Life Center, including expanded congregate meals, medical screenings, health and wellness clinics, and exercise classes. Individuals will be able to use the Wi-Fi in our media lounge and café with a tablet or laptop, and even enjoy some coffee and conversation. Enrichment classes in art, crafts, music, technology, and more will be offered, as well as lifelong learning educational opportunities!” NCCOA’s newly announced membership program offers priority registration and discounts for presentations and classes, free use of the media lounge and café, library, computer lab, game room, and fitness area, as well as invitations to special events throughout the year. The fee for individual members is $100 per year, quarterly membership for $35, and monthly for $15. Couples (two people sharing one household) may join yearly for $160, quarterly for $40, or monthly for $20. The Council is running a special membership rate through the end of the year of individuals for $75/year, couples for $135/year. Both Fernandina and Hilliard Life Centers offer those 60 and older assistance, information and support, as well as a variety of fun and engaging activities, plus opportunities to socialize. With the establishment of a Membership Director position, community outreach, and greater social media presence, participation in Fernandina Beach activities has increased by 40 percent. New corporate partnerships have secured increased in-kind donations and volunteers. Some of the programs and offerings include educational classes and seminars on topics of interest to seniors such as Social Security, Medicare, senior fraud, and advance directives. In addition, structured exercise with certified trainers, presentations by area musicians, arts and crafts with local artists, 18 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

TRANSPORTATION SERVICES NassauTRANSIT, launched in 1984, continues to be the only mode of public transportation in Nassau County, providing both scheduled public bus and registered paratransit services with a fleet of 25 buses. The public bus service has convenient bus stops across the county from Hilliard to Fernandina Beach. Commuter express routes connect both east and west Nassau County to River City Marketplace and downtown Jacksonville. The Island Hopper bus provides local transportation in Fernandina Beach. The fare for scheduled public bus service is only $1 each way with no charge for transfers. Registered paratransit is available to all qualifying county residents and provides curbside service for medical appointments, social engagements, recreation, and shopping. Advance reservations are required and the fare to board is only $2 each way. In addition, a service agreement reached with the Nassau County School District provides after-school transportation for students in a job training and placement program. All NassauTRANSIT bus operators are certified to FTA and FDOT requirements, and all vehicles in the fleet are wheelchair accessible.
NCCOA’S UPCOMING EVENTS AND GRAND OPENING The NCCOA holds ongoing fundraising events and quarterly campaigns, one of which is this year’s Rock ‘n Roll Gala! at Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort on October 19. The ribbon-cutting for their new building at Island Walkway will be held on September 17, and their Grand Opening event will be held on October 24 from 12 noon to 2 p.m. “We’re especially excited about our Grand Opening, which will be hosted by Sen. OSPREY VILLAGE NAMES SILVER PEN SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS Osprey Village retirement community recently gave away cash prizes to four winners of the community’s annual Silver Pen Writing Competition at a special awards ceremony. After the ceremony, the winners and their families enjoyed a reception with community members and staff. Osprey Village started the scholarship in 2012 with the goal of helping local high school students achieve their dreams of attending college by providing financial assistance. This year’s essay topic was “What would you want people to know about Left to right: Shelby Steadman, Dea Dvalishvili, Victoria Akers, your hometown?” The 20 essays, which were 600 to 1,000 and Anna Arato. words long, were judged by residents Joan Phelps, JoAnne Gallo, Norma Ceraolo, and Jo Merman, who chose the four winning essays. 2018 winners include: Anna Arato, first place; Dea Dvalishvili Wayne, second place; Victoria “Tory” Akers, third place; and Shelby Steadman, fourth place. Osprey Village is a vibrant retirement community located next to the beach at Amelia Island Plantation. Their mission is to improve the quality of life of seniors through wellness and services, allowing them to stay independent in their own homes for as long as possible. BRIGHTEN UP THE DOG DAYS OF AUGUST August is here, and it’s important to give our pets plenty of shade and water to prevent dehydration. But instead of using store-bought bowls, why not treat your furry friend to a ceramic bowl, decorated especially by you? Join your pet-loving pals for the “Dog Days of August” paint-your-own pottery event on August 26 at Clay Times Art Center, 112 South 3rd Street. Cat lovers will paint feline bowls from noon to 2 p.m., while dog owners will decorate bowls from 3 to 5 p.m. This event will not only provide unique gifts for special four-pawed friends, it will also benefit the Nassau Humane Society with a donation of $30 from each $45 fee received from participants. Even if you don’t have a pet, you may sign up to decorate one or more bowls, then donate the bowls to the Nassau Humane Society shelter. To register online, visit claytimesartcenter.com/NHSfundraiser, or register in person at the NHS Dog Park or at participating charity shops. On painting day, bring your creative ideas for decorating. After kiln firing of the bowls is complete, you’ll be notified with a time for pick-up at the NHS Dog Park, where participants can admire each other’s bowls and compare notes! SUSI SAX

ocated in the former Early Impressions day care center in downtown Fernandina Beach, Clay Times Art Center (CTAC) opened its doors last November featuring several local artist studios, a retail handmade art gallery, a pottery supply shop, and ceramic art classrooms. Now a favorite destination of Fernandina’s Second Saturday “Artrageous Artwalk,” CTAC’s gallery offers a broad selection of handmade art ranging from pottery and hot glass to paintings, jewelry, woodwork, silk wearables, and handcrafted home furnishings. The majority of the featured work is made by local CTAC studio artists, including Susi Sax, mixed media; John Mateer, hot glass; Robin BruckTanner, pottery; Julie Delfs, epoxy resin; Renee Martin, metalwork; Sue Almand, painting; and Kendyl Porter, epoxy resin. CTAC owner Polly Beach, a former full-time potter, spends most of her time at CTAC teaching wheel-throwing. Founding editor and publisher of Clay Times magazine, Beach has been sharing ceramic art trends and techniques with thousands of print and online subscribers since 1995. Yet it’s the live reaction of her
students to the thrill of working with clay that inspires Beach to share the Zen of clay work with local residents and visitors. “It’s no wonder ceramic art has survived for thousands of years,” says Beach. “The childlike joy of playing with mud and fire can be addictive! Some of us do it for the sheer fun of the process, like a musician who enjoys playing a composition. Others seek the pride of the end-product: a work of art with the potential to survive and inspire generations.” Classes for all ages are offered as onetime introductory experiences, or as a 6-week series for beginner, intermediate, or advanced students. Handbuilding classes are offered by Suzanne Prohaska, and studio practice sessions are monitored by Sarah McCullough. Paint-your-own pottery sessions are also available for individuals, groups, and fund-raisers. Ongoing classes are also offered in all kinds of mixed media, including epoxy resin, glass art, jewelry making, and more. For complete details on classes, exhibitions, and special events, visit www.claytimesartcenter. com or call/text (904) 624-5824, or visit the Clay Times Art Center Facebook page.

hen Joel Shapiro graduated from Jacksonville University with a B.S. in Finance, he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers as a pitcher. Working as a professional athlete might be every young man’s dream, but Joel realized it was not the route he wanted to take in life. With his finance degree and a strong desire to start his own business, Joel was drawn to the insurance industry. Today, Shapiro Insurance Group (SIG) has twelve locations in Florida, including Jacksonville and Fernandina Beach. Joel splits his time between his Jacksonville office and other locations in Florida. “I love the people here on Amelia Island,” says Joel. “Fernandina Beach is a unique community!” Joel attributes his success to the company’s culture of engaging their clients and getting to know them personally. For home, auto, business, or life insurance, Shapiro’s agents provide quotes from multiple sources so their clients can make the most informed decisions. SIG utilizes the most advanced technology the industry has to offer, which allows them to exceed customer expectations. Soon they will be launching a client self-service application for customers who simply want to check on their policies or coverages at any hour of the day. “Educating and providing clients’ choices is our goal,” says Joel. “We want to ensure that clients have peace of mind knowing they have the right insurance coverage in the event of a claim.” For more information, call (904) 277-2135 or visit www.shapiroinsurancegroup.com. Bridgeview, which opened in 2008, was the first to offer climate-controlled storage in the area. “From the ground up, Bridgeview Self Storage was built to be a local innovator in self-storage,” says Bob. “Our high-end security and advanced technology provide peace of mind when you store your belongings with us.” Bridgeview Self Storage features 656 units, both climate and non-climate controlled, and offers short and long term storage at various sizes and price points. Manager Nancy Allred is happy to help customers with their moving and storage needs. “We are a one-stop shop,” says Nancy. “Our customers and the safety of their possessions are our number one priority. Whether moving, downsizing, or just getting organized, we can assist you. We offer boxes and packing supplies, and Bridgeview Self Storage is an authorized U-Haul dealer.” “The self-storage industry is expanding as people are downsizing and decluttering their homes. Shrimpof Summer Days With hotels, restaurants, and local attractions serving up activities, events, and special offers celebrating the history of shrimping on Amelia, everyone gets to join in the fun.
BY KAREN MILLER PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE AMELIA ISLAND CVB
I
n 1913, a fisherman named Billy Corkum came to Amelia Island from Gloucester, Massachusetts hunting for bluefish. During his visit, he watched the process of shrimping for the very first time. In those days, shrimpers used seine nets hung between two boats to catch shrimp. After observing the shrimping process, Billy believed that there was a better way to harvest shrimp, and he soon invented the otter trawl net. This new method of shrimping consisted of towing behind the boat a funnel-shaped net, which emptied into a bag called a cod end. That invention changed the world of shrimpers across the globe, but particularly on Amelia Island, which earned the title “The Birthplace of the Modern Shrimping Industry.” Today, shrimp is the number one seafood consumed in the United States, and for many years Amelia Island remained the capital of this industry. To celebrate its unique status, the Amelia Island Tourist Development Council (AITDC) is announcing its new “Shrimp Days of Summer,” which takes place from August 15 through September 30. The Shrimp Days of Summer will feature a wide variety of special offers, activities, and events from several of the island’s most popular, award-winning resorts, hotels, restaurants, and attractions, giving visitors and locals plenty of ways to make lasting summer memories by building their very own “crustacean vacation.” The island’s participating resorts, hotels, bed-and-breakfast inns, and vacation rentals have created packages and special 33 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

They include an array of offerings, from afternoon happy hours with gourmet shrimp cocktails to couple’s massages, beach bags, bicycle rentals, and more. “Our idea was to create a promotion targeting the late summer that supports the destination’s shrimping heritage with ways visitors can eat, stay, and play, all designed around our favorite crustacean,” says Gil Langley, AITDC’s president. “The Shrimp Days of Summer promotion is designed to attract visitors during a traditionally slower ‘shoulder season.’ “We’re proud of Amelia’s legacy as the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry. “J
essica was continually absent from school,” shares Amy Pipkin, executive director of Communities in Schools (CIS) Nassau County. “As we got to know her in our after-school tutoring program, we learned that she was responsible for caring for her elderly grandmother, and this was causing her to miss her school bus regularly. So we picked up the phone and contacted Nassau County Council on Aging and secured support for this middle school student with so much on her plate.” This story is a prime example of the extraordinary work CIS has provided to local students since 1993. “Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life,” says Amy. The CIS programs are available to all middle school students in Nassau County. Participants are identified by guidance counselors, teachers, staff, and sometimes, by the students themselves. Following a permission slip, an onsite lead teacher learns the student’s story. “Usually it is academic challenges, but we’ve learned this is typically a symptom of a separate obstacle the student is facing.” Once CIS has the details, the team swings into action to help. “Collaboration with community resources and other agencies offering services in our county is key to our success,”
says Amy. “We are in one community, fighting for the same non-profit dollars, so the last thing we want to do is duplicate services.” Barnabas Center is a key partner with CIS, providing meals for many of its participants. The CIS partners are thrilled about the relationships and the work that they accomplish together. “Nassau Alcohol Crime Drug Abatement Coalition (NACDAC) is proud to collaborate and partner with CIS. We both provide much-needed services in our schools. NACDAC is looking forward to future endeavors with CIS,” says Executive Director Karrin Clark. In addition to identifying and meeting the needs of the students, CIS is committed to dropout prevention through relationship and academic support. At the core of this effort are the before- and after-school programs, which offer extra academic assistance. “Because the program is facilitated through the school’s lead certified teacher, who is often the student’s teacher during the day, the classroom experience is built upon at an individual level,” notes Amy. “A primary objective of the program is to have the student complete her/his homework, giving the student a positive feeling of readiness for the next day of

regular class. We are highly successful in keeping these kids in school and on the path to graduation.” Removing obstacles and providing academic support are essential to CIS’s work, but equally important are the opportunities CIS offers its participants. Last year, Ingersoll Rand’s global team was meeting at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, and they partnered with CIS as an outreach for their conference. “The attendees were working in teams building solar cars to race,” says Amy. “Seven eighth-grade girls, most of whom had never stepped foot into somewhere like The Ritz-Carlton before, received an invitation to join the teams to race the cars. The CIS girls had a chance to meet with over 300 business men and women to learn about solar cars and have fun with a STEM project – and wave checkered flags at the finish line!” Amy then had a chance to share with the company about the work that CIS is engaged in. Ingersoll Rand left behind not just a monetary gift for CIS, but also 160 solar car kits, which will be used in Nassau County middle schools in the upcoming year. CIS is excited about the 201819 academic year and the chance to continue to collaborate with community partners. HOW TO SHOOT A CIVIL WAR I
n December 2016, just two months after Hurricane Matthew unearthed 16 live Civil War cannonballs on Folly Beach in Charleston, South Carolina, our own Amelia Island Museum of History was evacuated after live ordnance was discovered in its possession. Civil War expert and Park Ranger Frank Ofeldt was called in to identify the cannonballs, and that’s when he discovered they were “live,” with the possibility of exploding. Although Ofeldt feels people shouldn’t panic over finding a cannonball in their backyard, precautions should be taken. “If you find a cannonball or shell, you should leave it be, and call the police department’s non-emergency number,” he says. “They will then come in, cordon off the area, and call the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad, who will take the cannonballs to a safe place and detonate them.” After the cannonballs were discovered, Amelia Island residents became fascinated with the idea that live munitions could be found around the island, including this writer, who didn’t know anything about the difference between live and non-live cannonballs. I called my friend Ranger Frank to ask him if he would give me a lesson on Civil War projectiles, and 49 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
he agreed, inviting me to Fort Clinch to learn more about the cannonballs that were used during the War Between the States. But then he took my lesson a step further. “Hey Karen,” he said, “Do you want to shoot a cannon while you’re here?” Shoot a cannon? Not something that was on my bucket list, but dang, who wouldn’t want to shoot a real Civil War cannon! My husband Troy agreed to photograph the momentous event, and Frank instructed me on the proper way to load and fire a 10-pdr. parrott rifle, which was used by both Union and Confederate armies in combat. Before the actual shoot, Frank showed us examples of various projectiles, including shots, which are solid, round non-explosive (non-live) cannonballs; shells, which are exploding (live) cannonballs, also called bombs; and spherical case shots, which would have been filled with shrapnel and an explosive chemical mixture. Some of these projectiles would be fitted with a contact fuse to explode upon impact; others would contain a timed-delay fuse. The first step in firing a cannon is to insert a cartridge, a bag of black powder encased in cotton, or in this case, aluminum foil. Then the cartridge is rammed into the breech

of the cannon with a rammer. For our purposes, we weren’t using a real cannonball, so the next step was to poke a priming wire down the vent to puncture the cartridge, thus exposing some of the powder. A breech sight was then inserted for aiming the cannon, then removed. Frank then explained and demonstrated the friction primer, which is the trigger. It consists of a brass tube and serrated wire key. Surrounding the key is a sparking compound, and the rest of the tube is filled with gunpowder. The key is attached to a lanyard, which is what I pulled to shoot the cannon. Cannon-shooting is a noisy affair, and I was instructed to pull the lanyard down quickly with my right hand, while turning my head to the left, away from the blast. Once Frank had everything set up, he started the countdown, while backing away from me and my cannon. “Three...two...one!” he called out, and as I pulled the lanyard, BOOM! went the cannon, much louder than I expected, the air filling with smoke and the smell of black powder. What an experience! I can see clearly why Civil War reenactors have a passion for their hobby – especially if once a month you get to shoot a cannon! The first weekend of each month, Fort Clinch hosts a Living History Weekend, where visitors can watch reenactors gather at the Fort to shoot cannons, perform marching drills, cook stew in cast iron pots, and live as the soldiers did back in 1864. For more information about the Fort’s events, call (904) 2777274 or visit www.floridastateparks.org/ park-events/Fort-Clinch.

e are a little over halfway through summer, and I am already looking forward to some cooler gardening weather. Hibiscus are a favorite among gardeners in our area. A spectacular new Hibiscus is the Summerific Ballet Slippers. The blossoms on this Rose Mallow have slightly ruffled, overlapping petals, which give a sense of swirling motion. Multitudes of flowers appear from mid-summer to fall, with 7-inch blooms appearing from the top of the stems to the bottom. The plant has an upright habit, fresh-looking green serrated leaves, and, of course, the beautiful blooms. This plant looks absolutely tropical, but it is hardy, too. Stems will die down to the ground during winter in colder weather, but will reappear in the spring. Full sun is best for this Hibiscus, as it brings out the rich colors. Pinch plants to encourage compact and bushy habit. They will grow 48 to 52 inches in height and width. An old favorite of mine, Hibiscus Cooperii, which was grown for its stunning foliage and

brilliant single red flowers, is making a comeback. It creates a fancy showpiece in the garden with its brilliantly colored leaves in shades of burgundy red, pink, white, and green. This plant has a very compact growth habit, growing to about 3 feet tall. Red flowers appear at the tips and side branches, measuring about 4 inches across. Water freely during the growing season and fertilize with a balanced fertilizer from April through September. Prune out about 1/3 of old wood in spring to keep mature plants growing vigorously. A few years back at the trade show, I came across a plant that caught my eye in several displays. This beauty is called Pagoda Flower, and I decided I wanted one in my garden. One day

while at a local nursery, I saw the plant in all its glory! I discovered it was a Clerodendrum Paniculatum, with an eye-popping pagoda-shaped 12-inch flower cluster on top. The Pagoda Flower is an upright shrub, with large green leaves and huge showy clusters of orange and red above the foliage. The flower heads resemble Chinese architecture, hence its name. It stood out in my garden, then died back to the ground in a freeze. But when spring arrived, so did the green leaves from the ground. I was so happy! During that same summer, I broke my hip, so my garden became very neglected. Lots of new shoots were coming up, so I shared them with anyone who wanted some. This past winter, I chopped all of the stalks to the ground, and in spring I cut out many suckers, so now I am down to 20 plants. If you want only one or two of these beauties, my advice would be to cut out the suckers as they appear. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

hris and Deb Boelkes knew they would spend their retirement living on an island; they just didn’t know it would be Amelia Island. The couple had lived much of their lives on Bellevue Island in Newport Beach, California. When retirement came, they set out for Hawaii, where one of Deb’s best friends lived, to buy a home and settle in. After selling their California home, their furniture, and their cars, the Boelkes looked at more than fifty houses in Hawaii, but eventually decided that Hawaii wasn’t for them. They returned to the mainland, bought a car, and set off across the United States hoping to find an island where it was warmer and less gray than coastal Southern California. Deb’s parents lived in Osprey Village, so they dropped off a few things there and headed up to Daniel Island outside 55 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
Charleston to begin their search. Chris and Deb had a few parameters for their retirement home: it had to be near a major airport, have a vibrant culture, and provide good medical care. After looking at homes between Charleston and St. Simons Island, they came back to Amelia to stay with Deb’s parents before gearing up to look further south. While they were here, they humored Deb’s mother by meeting with a realtor friend of hers to look at local homes. Once they saw the custom Long Point home built by previous owners Randolph and Charlotte Carter, the Boelkes knew they had found their island home. The Carters, who had retired to Amelia from Key West, had built a custom low country-style home patterned after a house they had seen on Kiawah Island.

The home is nestled among historic oak trees on a secluded, private road on Long Point, overlooking both the river and the golf course. Charlotte Carter, who designed the house, had planted a totally grass-free, terraced lawn designed with azaleas and lilies. The three-story house has a four-car garage downstairs, with bedrooms on the second floor and an open living area on the top floor. The second-floor main entrance leads to a wide foyer running from the front of the house to the back. A hall clock dating from the late 1700s stands just inside the front door. “This was Charlotte Carter’s grandfather’s clock,” laughs Deb, “an actual grandfather clock!” Chris researched the history of the clock after the Boelkes bought it from Charlotte, learning that the cabinet had been made in Boston and that the clockworks were from England. 56 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Chris and Deb didn’t do much remodeling before moving in, but they did re-finish the kitchen cabinets and install new appliances. The kitchen opens to another veranda with a view of the front yard and the common area beyond. A high top table is a much-enjoyed lunch spot. “It’s like being in a tree house,” says Chris. An office with two built-in desks and doors to the front veranda provides an expansive workspace for both Chris and Deb. When Charlotte Carter’s husband Randolph passed away, she put the home on the market and was delighted that the Boelkes were the purchasers. Chris and Deb bought much of the furniture from Charlotte, and they became fast friends. As a surprise for Charlotte, the Boelkes had a plaque made commemorating the “Carter House,” unveiling it for her at a dinner party. alking down the sunny side of Centre Street on a bright summer morning, I popped into The Picnic Basket to see what was new and catch up with Chef Stephanie Christopher. On the way in, I noticed her new “Sugar & Spice” menu displayed in the storefront and on the large chalkboard behind the counter. I couldn’t wait to try some of the new offerings and see what Chef Stephanie had cooking at The Picnic Basket. As I headed toward the kitchen to say hello, one of my favorite delights beckoned to me from a retail cheese display along the wall. There, like a crowned queen on a throne of Manchego, Brie, and Stilton, sat Cowgirl Creamery’s Mt. Tam
triple-cream cheese. You know where else you can find that in Fernandina Beach? Neither do I. I was ecstatic. Walking in from Centre Street, the small storefront opens up into a delightful café that feels airy and full of light, like a space transplanted from a French countryside. Inside there is seating for service and a deli counter filled with fresh salads and 62 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
pastries. And popping out of the kitchen a half step behind her omnipresent smile was Chef Stephanie. The smile is genuine and the serenity real because she loves being here and sharing the space with her customers. Locals may recognize Stephanie from Four Seasons Bistro, which she owns and continues to operate with her husband, Michael Walden. After a busy dinner service and a brief night’s sleep, she’s the first one in at The Picnic Basket in the morning as she lays the foundation for her next culinary adventure. Most recently, Chef Stephanie has put her stamp on the Picnic Basket with her “Sugar & Spice” menu. The menu reflects her breezy but composed style, blending beautiful ingredients with a lifetime of travel and experience. On this stop, I ordered the Pesto Chicken Club Sandwich and the TPB Veggie Wrap, along with a couple of salads to-go to share with some friends at the beach. The Pesto Chicken Club is a show stopper: grilled chicken on a toasted potato roll with house-made pesto, fresh lettuce and tomato, crispy bacon, and Swiss cheese. The chicken breast was tender and juicy, and the pesto and Swiss provided the perfect creamy texture with the crisp vegetables. The veggie wrap had the entire garden in it, with fresh avocado and feta drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette in a flour tortilla. This was the perfect warm weather beach food, refreshing and delicious. In addition to the café, wines, craft beers, and specialty foods available, The Picnic Basket also provides first-class catering, as Stephanie continues to grow her business in the community, moving into a bright tomorrow. The Picnic Basket also makes a lovely place for coffee and homemade scones. It is open Monday through Saturday at 9 a.m., and lunch is available from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. You will also love working with Stephanie for all of your catering needs, from weddings to corporate luncheons and family reunions. The Picnic Basket is located at 503 Center Street. Stop in and see what’s cooking.

summer Wines and
Spirits BY KAREN MILLER

melia Island’s inaugural “Shrimp Days of Summer” is here, and we’re planning on eating lots of local shrimp and seafood at our house this month! And what better way to take a delicious shrimp dinner—or whatever you’re serving this summer—to the next level than to pair it with a few bottles of light summer wines and spirits. Holly Carlisle, manager at Amelia Island Wine Company, is crazy for rosé. In fact, the store carries over 40 varieties. “Summer is the best time to drink rosé,” says Carlisle. “Rosé has become so popular now that you’ll find varieties from all over the globe, including New Zealand, Chile, France, Oregon, California, and more.” Carlisle explains that it’s the skin of the grape that adds color to the wine, and the wines are composed of different grape varietals, such as Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah. “Although we normally equate rosé being paired with lighter dishes like seafood, many roses hold up to grilled steak and pork,” she says. “What a lot of people don’t realize is that rosé is actually a red wine.” Bubbles are always a good start to a summer dinner, whether it’s Champagne, Prosecco, or Cava, and they pair well with appetizers or snacks. “Bocelli, made from the Prosecco grape that is indigenous to the Veneto region of Italy, has subtle flower and fruit aromas that make the palate deliciously light,” says Carlisle. Other recommendations include Picpoul de Pinet from the coast of southwest France, a perfect wine for shellfish and light cream sauces, and Umani Ronchi Vellodoro Pecorino, produced from a little-known white grape indigenous to the 76 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
central-eastern Italian wine region of Abruzzo, respected for its freshness and bright acidity. And if you want to serve a wine that will be a conversation piece, try “Amelia” Brut Rose Crement de Bordeaux, a Merlot-Cabernet blend, with an aromatic and textural complexity. But if you’re a true red wine enthusiast, Carlisle recommends Pinot Noir, Grenache, and Tempranillo for summer drinking. If you prefer your summer beverages a little stronger, Mitchell Wickless from Five Points Package Store suggests you try the new and very popular Ketel One Botanical vodkas. “These flavored vodkas are low-carb, low-calorie, and lower proof than traditional vodka,” says Wickless. “The 60 proof varieties feature flavors like grapefruit, peach, cucumber, mint, and they can be mixed with club soda for the perfect, easy summer drink.” Kentucky bourbons are also very trendy, according to Wickless, and he suggests Elmer T. Lee and Buffalo Trace, great on the rocks, or in cocktails like Old Fashioneds or Bourbon Lemonade. If you like drinking your summer beverages out of a can, White Claw Hard Seltzer might be a change of pace from the usual cold beer. “White Claw is the perfect blend of seltzer water, pure alcohol, and a splash of fruit juice concentrate,” says Wickless. “It’s low-carb, gluten-free, and contains no added sugar. Plus, it’s only 100 calories per can. Premade-cocktails are also popular and convenient for summer boating and camping.” Amelia Island Wine Company holds a complimentary wine tasting every Friday night from 5 to 7 p.m., located at 4924 First Coast Highway. Five Points Package Store is located at 212 South 8th Street.
