On Amelia Island, organizations and individuals are connecting the different generations —the young and the old—who might most benefit from sharing time together.
Amelia
Bringing together different generations used to be a lot easier than it is today. Families would naturally congregate in certain neighborhoods in their hometown, with family members rarely leaving to live and work elsewhere. Sometimes that close proximity could be stifling, but the beauty of it was that you always had a close-knit network nearby to share in the good times and offer support when it was needed. In our family, I remember grandparents and aunts and uncles talking for hours about different characters from the old neighborhood, usually identifying them by the street they lived on and who lived next door. Today, many people leave their hometowns to take jobs and end up relocating hundreds of miles away, where they need to establish new networks of friendship and support. New hometowns can bring rewarding new relationships, but sometimes the loss of old networks can lead to a feeling of isolation. All of these recent sociological developments are also playing out on Amelia Island. On Amelia Island, we have some families who have lived here for generations, but we also have many residents who have relocated here for work or to enjoy retirement near the beach. Retired people who are far from their families may feel a greater need for connection to avoid feeling isolated. In today’s world, it’s not just older people who can experience loneliness; ironically, some in the younger generation are feeling a similar loss of connection thanks to the pervasive presence of glowing screens and digital technology in their lives. While our smartphones and other electronic devices can be a great benefit, our children can spend so much time on them that they lose the all-important ability to connect face-to-face with another human being. Fortunately, here on Amelia Island, a number of organizations and individual people are doing their best to connect the generations in our midst—the young and the old—who might most benefit from sharing time together. In this month’s cover story, Julie Simmons takes a look at the different ways that these generations are connecting, whether over a chess board, where the conversation can turn to events in the past or dreams of the future, or sharing a song on the ukulele, learning about local wildlife, or exploring the history of our nation. We hope you’ll be inspired to look for some opportunities to connect, too. Also this month, we take a walk with Dickie Anderson along a pilgrim’s path in Europe on the famed Camino de Santiago; raise our “Eyes to the Skies” to appreciate the stunning Roseate Spoonbill; offer a delicious “Island Entertaining” summer grilling recipe; visit the Mustard Seed Café; and much more.

“P
lease come down,” my text read, a quick and simple solution to summon my daughter and save a trip up the stairs or a shout from below. Of course, in our tech-savvy home, I knew she’d see it and respond immediately, and naturally my device was conveniently an arm’s length away. In our virtual world, we find solutions at our fingertips, answers in our browsers, navigation speaking and vibrating on our wrists, and conversation on the screen. With all the tools available to us today, our lives are quite easy, but ironically, all these tech connections can create a sense of isolation as well. Without a word, my daughter made it downstairs just in time to take a trip with her friends to the local assisted-living 11 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
home, where our 98-year-old Granny happens to stay. The girls spent time this summer making cards for the residents there, who we might also describe as, well, lonely. If you think about this modern juxtaposition—that some are isolated by their technology while others are isolated physically by their station in life—it’s interesting that both experience a similar emptiness, missing out on real connection and relationships in their lives. And therein lies a great opportunity: for the young to know the young-at-heart and the rich experiences that brought them to where they are today, and for the elderly to understand today’s youth and experience how young people’s passions and

dreams can rekindle the past. There is such valuable knowledge and so many varied skills to share! On Amelia Island, a group of individuals and organizations are beginning to create such opportunities to connect the generations in our community for just these purposes.
MEEETING OVER A CHESS BOARD Meet Thomas Rowan, who came to Amelia and reawakened a forgotten love of the game of chess. “My dad taught me the game at age nine, and we used to play until I beat him so much he stopped playing! So, I joined a chess club with a group of older gentlemen, who not only taught me strategies for the game, but also, through our conversations, a lot about the way the world works,” shares Thomas. “When I arrived on Amelia Island, I saw an opportunity to begin to work with youth through schools and chess clubs. As I played with students, they began to open up and we would have fantastic conversations. I saw their hearts, passions, fears, 12 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
and concerns. That prompted me to think about how I could get more people talking with kids!” That was when Thomas made a stop at the Nassau County Council on Aging (COA) and suggested he bring some of his students over to play chess with the members. “It’s absolutely rewarding to see youth teaching or reteaching older folks how to play chess,” says Thomas, “and to see the elderly teaching the youth to converse again by sharing stories of their childhood, the Civil Rights Movement, the first man on the moon—things the students read about, but have never heard first-hand” Thomas discovered that many of the students with whom he meets don’t know what they want to do when they grow up. “The connection of the generations is bringing inspiration to the students,” Thomas observes. “For example, one student wants to be an engineer, but he had no idea what kind. We partnered him for a game of chess with a mechanical engineer, who shared his inventions.”

Pamela Crouser shares her love of the ukulele with Brianna Jones.
At the end of the day, Thomas is thrilled about this new partnership, where he witnesses the young people teaching the elderly patience and the older generation discovering hope for the next. “We live in a small community, and the kids are learning to think a little bigger, see the world beyond, and discover what they are capable of accomplishing – even beating their opponent at the game of chess.”
THE J.O.Y PROGRAM AT OSPREY VILLAGE Osprey Village, one of Amelia Island’s premier senior living communities, actually won an award earlier this spring for their work in bridging generations. “The J.O.Y. Program (Joining Older and Younger) is a unique way for our community to engage with the local area and focus on generational communication,” says Executive Director Travis Grainger. “Working together, we can create amazing results.” This initiative was conceptualized in 2017 by Osprey Village’s leadership team to connect with local youth organizations and students from preschool to college to create 14 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
long-term partnerships through social and wellness events. “These programs are not meant to be a single event, but a continuous collaboration that allows our residents and younger generations to connect through their life experiences, in turn creating a lasting impact on all participants and bridging the generational gap.” When measuring the impact of this program, Osprey Village stood out in comparison to the other nominees for the award. Community members who were hesitant at first to participate are actively engaged and bonding with new friends of different ages.
UKULELES, YOUNG NATURALISTS, AND COTILLIONS Many other groups on Amelia Island are working across generations not just for relationship but also for specific skills and knowledge sharing. “Intergenerational connection is rewarding for both young and old,” says Robyn Nemes, who founded the Seaside Strummers, a ukulele meet-up for

Many of the older members have offered financial assistance as well, which has resulted in a program of giving free ukuleles to deserving youth, and, in the process, changing lives. “Youth who participate are clearly expanding compassion, being patient and helpful when an older member of the group has trouble hearing well. Old and young laugh together, learn together, and eagerly anticipate their times together.” Robyn is also involved in the Wild Amelia Junior Naturalist Program, which incorporates intergenerational learning on a regular basis. “Benefits to youth include the joy of learning 16 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
about our local wildlife and gathering skills from the earlier generations that are being lost over time. Benefits for seniors include the joy of being needed and appreciated. “For me, it is an ongoing process of being inspired by youthful perspectives! These children and teens have so much to teach with their fresh ideas and hopeful hearts, and older citizens have so much to give with their wisdom, skills, and encouragement. It is a beautiful partnership of growth and evolving love for one another.” The National League of Junior Cotillions is a showcase in its effort to pass skills to our youth. “One of the most important elements of the Cotillion programs is the continuation of traditional manners and etiquette,” says Leigh Coulter Beal, director of the Nassau County chapter. “So often these days, parents and children are caught up with church, school, and the frantic schedule of sports. And of course, the students also have the chance to learn dance steps they wouldn’t learn elsewhere.” The Cotillion season ends with an annual Black and White Ball, where participants dress in their finest and practice their new skills to an audience of their mother and fathers.
SHARING OUR HISTORY In addition to tradition, groups on Amelia Island are committed to hand down history. Meet a local couple, Kim and Rob Hicks, who authored a children’s book, Amelia A to Z, for just this reason. “We think it’s important to ‘pass on history’ because knowing where you’ve been sure gives you insight into 18 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
where you’re going,” they say. “We also think Amelia Island just has too much awesome history not to share. It’s easy to take this place for granted and just think of it as a nice beach with a cute downtown, but our history here is about as old as any in the new world.” Amelia A to Z gives children of all ages a taste of what our Island offers, and the Hicks encourage families to make a visit to the Amelia Island Museum of History. The University of US, part of the US Constitution Scholarship Foundation, is another extraordinary example of one generation committing to share with the next. “We read an article in the New York Times, which discussed how America’s high schools were no longer teaching students about our heritage, founders, and most importantly, the U.S. Constitution,” says Howard Pines, co-founder of the organization with Dr. Bill Amos and Al Watson. “We decided to take action and bring an understanding of the U.S. Constitution and American heritage to our students and the Nassau County community.”

In its fourth season, The University of US is an after-school program where skilled lecturers, including judges and law school professors, teach about the Articles of the Constitution, amendments, The Federalist Papers, our founders, and the Federal Court System. Students who complete the program are eligible to apply for one of five $5,000 scholarships. Similarly, Youth Leadership Nassau was created 15 years ago to develop student’s leadership skills, help them to learn about aspects of Nassau County, and to develop connections with other students and adults. Youth participants attend programs on important themes like environmental issues, quality of life, and tourism/hospitality to name a few, while being mentored by adult-participants to complete projects surrounding these themes. “I participate because I believe it’s important for each generation to pass along to the new the knowledge and relationships that help to create the fabric of a community,” says founding member Sharyl Wood. “Since Nassau County is large and diverse in many ways, I think it’s important for everyone to know and respect the people, interests, and outlooks of others as well as to know the needs and issues of the county as a whole. It’s important for the younger generations to know how things 20 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
work, such as county government, volunteerism, etc., so that they can be more effective in moving us into the future. “For those of us ‘older’ ones, developing relationships with the high school students helps us to see issues in a fresher light through the views of the students so that we apply current views to address needs and issues. All of this works together to develop intergenerational respect and reliance among the citizens of the county.” When we finally made it to Granny’s bedside that day, six sweet youngsters, who had left their phones in the car, gathered together and sang a song to a beaming lady! Next, the girls were all ears to hear her story of delivering twin girls while her husband was away in the war, when she didn’t even know she was pregnant with twins! As we left, I heard Granny tell someone this was the best day she’s had all year, then I listened to the girls giggling in the car about what they learned from her. “If you have an idea, go do it!” encourages Thomas Rowan, reminding all ages that we can accomplish anything we want —especially through relationships with those who traveled this way before us.

SUMMER HOUSE REALTY DONATES $30,000 TO SUPPORT WATER MISSION
NASSAU COUTY SCHOOLS EARN A+ RATING AGAIN
S
chool bells are ringing again this month, and so are the voices of the Nassau County School District teachers and administrators celebrating their latest A rating. And that’s not all! “We are also ranked third in the state out of 67 counties,” says Superintendent Dr. Kathy Burns. “I want to recognize our outstanding team of teachers, leaders, support staff, district personnel, board members, and students. It takes everyone working together to ensure success.” School grades may include up to eleven components – four achievement (English language arts, mathematics, Jamil Sharif science and social studies), four learning gains, one middle school acceleration, as well as graduation rate and college and career acceleration. This measuring stick awarded all our elementary schools and high schools an A rating, and Nassau County third graders are ranked first in the state for math performance. Meanwhile, Nassau County middle school students performed in the top 10 for English and math standards, and the high schoolers were ranked third in the state for biology and second place for English language arts. “As we head into the new school year, together, we will keep our students safe and continue our tradition of excellence. We are Nassau!” says Dr. Burns.
Summer House Realty of Amelia Island presented a check for $30,000 this year to Water Mission, a non-profit based in South Carolina whose mission is to bring safe water to communities around the world. “Summer House Realty’s perspective is that when you believe that your work is not about you, but about others, you will be successful and have energy and joy knowing that your pursuits reach further,” explain owners Jenny and James Schaffer. And that is just the reason the couple and their team commit to an annual donation to Water Mission, a water filtration non-profit that provides self-sustaining clean water to communities worldwide. Last year, the team exceeded their $30,000 goal, providing a 6,000-person village in Malawi, Africa with clean water as well as making donations to Amelia Island non-profits. “As a team-building experience, we travel each spring with the Summer House family to Water Mission for a company update and to see the impact our team, business, and clients are making worldwide. Our favorite part is presenting a larger and larger check each year,” smiles Jenny. “Anyone can start a business, but to create a movement that impacts the world in such a big way, from our small town, is priceless.”
“AN EVENING OF STORY & SONG” RETURNS IN AUGUST AT STORY & SONG BOOKSTORE BISTRO
W
hen Donna and Mark Kaufman left Nashville, what they missed most was “Writer’s Night,” an event Donna started at the local bookstore/café she managed. Every Friday, a parade of singer/songwriters performed to a packed house. Over the years, the Kaufmans came to know some great entertainers with musical talent and a penchant for writing. Drawing on this network, the couple recreated the experience on Amelia Island, hosting concerts called “An Evening of Story & Song” at St. Peter Episcopal Church. Now with a stage and sound system at Story & Song Bookstore Bistro, their Amelia Island bookstore, the Kaufmans host monthly concerts presenting some of the best talent in the country. The lineup for the rest of this year includes the award-winning The Obscure Brothers (Bob Patterson and Charley Simmons) on Saturday, August 17; Canadian fiddler and step-dancer April Verch and her band on September 7; Nashville-based recording artist Kyshona on October 5; and a return visit by the duo who were the first to appear here 15 years ago, Mark Elliott and Gary Culley, who perform together as Runaway Home. Tickets are $20 and available at Story & Song, 1430 Park Avenue, or by calling (904) 601-2118 or visiting StoryandSongBookstore.com.

usan McCarthy’s grandparents lived in a trailer park when she was a young girl, and visiting them was one of her favorite things to do. “It was a wonderful place,” says Susan. “I always remember how the neighbors and families would get together. What fond memories I have of those days!” Trailer park life has stayed with her over the years, so when Susan decided to open an antiques and collectibles shop in Fernandina Beach, Trailer Park Collectibles seemed like the perfect name. Susan opened her business on Alachua Street 12 years ago, and two years later she moved the business to Centre Street, where today her antique mall-style business hosts 35 vendors and consignors. Trailer Park’s inventory has a little bit of everything, including furniture, tableware, nautical decor, vinyl records, and antiques of all kinds like jewelry, linens, funky signs, pottery, and more. “Most of my vendors have been with me for years,” says Susan. “They are like family to me, and passionate about what they do. They are always restocking their shelves and booths!”
And why are so many people buying older furniture and decorative items these days? Susan attributes it to a creative force that is present in decorating these days. “People don’t want to walk into a furniture store and buy new things that other people already have,” says Susan. “They want to decorate their homes as they please, using things that reflect their own personalities and lifestyles.” For doit-yourselfers, Susan sells Farmhouse Paint, a top-notch brand that is so easy and effortless to use that anyone can enjoy painting with professional results. Susan will be offering painting classes starting in the fall. Susan loved the trailer park life so much that she purchased a 37-foot trailer of her own, where she now lives with her husband, Brian, and their dog, Ziggy. She may have downsized her own lifestyle considerably, but Trailer Park Collectibles is chock full of unique gifts and vintage items that will make you smile. For more information, call (904) 491-4461 or visit www.trailerparkcollectibles.com or visit their Facebook page for the latest offerings. Trailer Park Collectibles is located at 702 Centre Street.

ilt’s of Amelia, Inc., is undoubtedly a family-run business: Richard Crawford started the company in 1990, as a “sister” business to Milt’s of Sarasota, which was run by his father, Milt Crawford. Milt sold his company in 1994 and retired, and Rick and two of this three sons—Nick and Patrick-now operate the third-generation company. Nick Crawford, Marketing Coordinator and Office Administrator, explains that Milt’s handles both residential and light commercial air conditioning and heating sales and service for Nassau County, including Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, and Yulee. Milt’s can help with service or with an equipment upgrade or with repair, including warranty work on all models. Milt’s of Amelia also provides air-quality solutions, inspections, coil cleanings, maintenance, and annual tune ups in addition to their day-to-day service and installations. “We take tremendous pride in each of our employees,” Nick said. “We are all like family here, and that’s the atmosphere we aim to create with our customers.” That has been a winning formula for Milt’s for almost 30 years. Milt’s of Amelia is proud to be the Nassau dealer of Daikin Comfort Pro products. Nick explains that Daikin offers industry-leading technology. “Daikin approached us with their product line,” says Nick, “and we were happy to become their local source.” For more information about the company, products, or services, please call Milt’s of Amelia at (904) 2619445, or e mail them at miltsofamelia@yahoo.com. Milt’s is available twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.
hip Harper has owned Harper Insurance Agency for twenty three years, and he moved his office to Fernandina Beach from Middleburg last year in March. Chip is an independent agent, who specializes in home, auto, renter’s, and flood insurance. In addition, the company also writes boat, motorcycle, and RV insurance. Harper Insurance provides client services throughout the state of Florida, but concentrates in Northeast Florida. “We cover coastal property, condos, new construction, older homes, vacant dwellings and renters’ insurance,” explains Chip. “We have access to more than fifty carriers, which enables us to shop for competitive rates.” Harper Insurance Agency also provides liability policies for small businesses, including painters and landscapers. Chip is a graduate of Georgia Southern University, where he played football for two years for Erik Russell. Chip and his wife of twenty seven years, Jennifer Cowart Harper, have made their home on the marsh in Yulee. “We had been coming to Fernandina Beach for many summers to stay at a family condo,” says Chip, “but it was definitely time to move here.” The Harpers, who have three children—Chandler, 23, Tyler, 19, and Houston, 13—also share their home with a soft-coat Wheaton Terrier and a Persian cat. On the weekends, Chip enjoys going to the local market, kayaking, and spending time at the beach with his family. For a free quote or a review of your current policy, call Chip at (904) 406-0887, visit harperinsuranceagencyinc.com, or stop by the office at 714 Beech Street.

F
or travelers who enjoy walking vacations, there is one walk that stands above all others: the fabled Camino, or the Way of St. James. The Camino travels through some of northern Spain’s most dramatic landscapes. Leading to the holy city of Santiago de Compostela, it has attracted pilgrims for many centuries, and it now attracts modern-day pilgrims. The Camino is comprised of several paths, the most popular being the Camino Frances. It starts in St. Jean Pied de Port in France and covers 500 miles, typically taking 30 days or more to complete. The walk gained significant attention among U.S. walkers because of the 2010 movie, The Way, starring Martin Sheen, in which a grieving father decides to take the journey along the path where his son lost his life in order to resolve the issues the two shared. My sister and I decided it was time to take on the Camino. We met our tour leaders and group of 12 in Burgos, about two-thirds of the way from St. Jean Pied de Port, to embark on our own abbreviated pilgrim walk to the holy city of Santiago de Compostela. With the help of our two experienced and talented leaders, Patricia and David, we set out on one of the most amazing journeys any of us could ever have imagined. 33 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
Like the pilgrims before us, we followed the famed path marked with the distinctive scallop shell logo and crude yellow arrows pointing the way. Those doing the walk attach a scallop shell to their backpacks to identify them as pilgrims making their way to Santiago. We typically walked ten miles a day along the ancient path, and we met hundreds of present-day pilgrims walking for a variety of reasons. At midday, we stopped and enjoyed amazing lunches of a variety of delicious Spanish soups, salads, and local specialties and, yes, beer and wine, too. We traveled flat, dusty miles that ebbed into beautiful forested hills. As we walked, we would stop to visit the cathedrals, churches, and historic towns that dot the way. At each stop, whether a church, a place to eat, or somewhere to spend the night, we would get our official passport (issued at the beginning of our walk) stamped with colorful images. At the end of the walk, the passport proves that you have met the mileage requirements to get an official certificate. Along the way, we met people of all ages from places including Australia, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Japan, and the Netherlands. They all shared wonderful stories about their reasons for walking and their experiences along The Way.

Traditionally, pilgrims carry everything on their backs and stay in simple hostel accommodations. They rise at four in the morning to set off on an average walk of 16 miles a day to ensure they have a bed in the next town. Our accommodations were much gentler and met my non-negotiable requirements of hot water and cold wine. We ate like the kings and queens that once blessed the area with cathedrals and churches. Our destination was the famed Cathedral of St. James, the reputed burial place of Saint James the Great, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ. The cathedral has been a place of pilgrimage since the Early Middle Ages and marks the traditional end of the pilgrimage route. Once in Santiago, we experienced a breathtaking highlight. Attending the noon Mass at the cathedral, we joined a huge crowd and witnessed the botafumerio ceremony. A huge silver container 34 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
of incense (known in the Church as a thurible) is put in motion by a group of eight men dressed in scarlet and pulling ropes that set the container in motion. It swings in an arc hundreds of feet long across the full width of the massive cathedral’s transept. No matter your faith, it is a moving ceremony. Many doing the walk choose to continue to the furthest point west in Spain, Finisterre, the so-called end of the world. Another day’s walk brought us to Finisterre’s white sandy beach. Soon, boots were off and tired feet were treated to the cool, turquoise water. This present-day pilgrim found that walking the Camino de Santiago met all expectations and more. Walking is our preferred way to experience the places we visit on our travels. We will long remember the traditional greeting along the path to Santiago: “Buen Camino!” which means “Good Way!”

hey are unmistakable. Standing among the white egrets, ibis, and storks, these bright, beautiful, longlegged creatures display a pop of color on our marshes and in the sky. They are eye-catching. They are Pretty in Pink. They are Roseate Spoonbills. Roseate Spoonbills (scientific name: Platalea ajaja) visit the Amelia Island ecosystem each year from about May until late October. Their beautiful pink plumage catches one’s eye and is enough to make a bird lover’s heart skip a beat. Their beautiful pink plumage inspires many a local photographer to visit the mud flats, marshes, and tidal pools where they feed. Their beautiful pink plumage nearly led to their extinction in the late 1800s, when hunters from across America raided rookeries for their plumage. Their feathers were in high demand for hats and other items in the fashion industry The Migratory Bird Act was written in 1916 to stop the plumage trade and protect all birds. In the last century, they have made an amazing comeback; however, Audubon still considers their status as “uncommon and local”. The Roseate Spoonbill is one of only six species of Spoonbills found worldwide. They are the only Spoonbill species found in the U.S., and they occur only in the southeast. Most people must travel long distances in order to catch a glimpse of these continued on next page 41 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • AUGUST 2019

striking, long-legged pink-and-white birds in Florida, Texas, or Louisiana. Here in our area, we need only travel to Spoonbill Pond, Egan’s Creek, along the Amelia River, or to any marsh in the area. Look for them perched in the trees along Atlantic Avenue near the entrance to Fort Clinch or at the north end of the island near Pogy Road. According to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), “This species can reach a length of 30-40 inches (76-102 centimeters) with a wingspan of 50-53 inches (127135 centimeters).” As FWC and Texas Parks and Wildlife note, “The pink coloration comes from the organisms on which they feed, which are full of caroteniods (organic pigment). As the name implies, the roseate spoonbill also has a large, spoon-shaped bill, which it sweeps back and forth in shallow water to capture prey.” Their diet consists of such things as fish, shrimp, aquatic insects, and crustaceans, which they swallow whole. If by any chance you need help to find them, you can consult eBird. org . eBird is an extensive online data base created by the Cornell Lab of

Ornithology. Just enter the words Roseate Spoonbill in the search box, then enter your location as the region. eBird has daily reports of sightings of Spoonbills and all other species which have been reported. It is a free resource. If you see a Roseate Spoonbill, you can report your sightings and help others find them, while assisting Cornell collect useful data. Speaking of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, they also have an educational, free website called allaboutbirds.org . Their website tells us the “flamboyant Roseate Spoonbill looks like it came straight out of a Dr. Seuss book with its bright pink feathers, red eye staring out from a partly bald head, and giant spoon-shaped bill. Groups sweep their spoonbills through shallow fresh or salt waters snapping up crustaceans and fish. They fly with necks outstretched, to and from, foraging and nesting in areas along the coastal southeastern U.S. and south to South America. These social birds nest and roost in trees and shrubs with other large wading birds.” Be sure to keep your “eyes to the skies” to spot a Roseate Spoonbill before they migrate south out of our area!

captivating candy If you’d like to add color and interest to your winter garden, consider adding new plants like Candy and Galaxy, which display decorative berries in the cooler months. BY BETTY MORRELL
W
hile looking through the information I collected at last year’s trade show, I came across two plants that I had earmarked. They are both new, which means they may not be available yet, but keep an eye out for them. Meet Candy (Kilmcan PP 20,931), a shrub that will add interest and color to your winter garden. After most leaves and flowers are gone for the season on other plants, behold Candy, with her candypink berries that ripen in early fall as the last of summer’s small pink flowers swell into pearl-like berries. The leaves will fall, leaving each arching stem adorned with these decorative berries, which will remain through our colder months. Candy grows 24 to 30 inches high and wide, has dark green foliage which contrasts with the sweet little pink flowers that cover the bush in summer. It has a compact habit with arching branches, and can be used in borders or en mass. What a beauty! It can be grown in full sun. Do not eat the berries! You can fertilize with a 6-6-6 fertilizer in spring. The arching branches with berries make great additions to flower arrangements.
TIP OF T HE M O N T H Another reminder to fertilize your Roses. You can trim evergreens and deadhead any perennials that look tired. Fertilize Azaleas and Camellias with an acid fertilizer.
Next comes Galaxy, which you could call the bride of the Coralberry bushes (Kolmgala PP 20,931). As the white berries on this shrub ripen in fall, the branches look like they are adorned with strands of pearls. Galaxy has small, showy flowers in summer. A compact shrub, it’s a little larger than Candy, growing to 30 inches in height and width. Plant in full sun to part-shade. Try these pretty branches of berries in a wreath or holiday decorations. The new Ka Pow series of the Paniculata Phlox is a Phlox that packs a punch. It is a compact series sporting vibrant colors that will stand out in your garden, containers, rock garden, borders, or as ground cover. These compact plants mature to 16 to 18 inches with an abundance of eye-

catching pink, lavender, purple and bi-color (white with burgundy centers) blooms from June through August. Ka Pow Phlox are mildew-resistant and can be used for cut flowers. In May, I wrote about a new Sea Pink in the Dreameria series called Dream Weaver. Another outstanding plant in this series is called Dreamland. This little plant waves masses of coral globe-shaped blooms, flushing out in spring from a tight mound of ornamental foliage. Dreamland is drought-tolerant, wind-tolerant, and suitable for coastal planting. Plant it in masses for great ground cover, in containers and rock gardens, or as a low border or edging. Cut flowers from these plants last well for indoor displays. Remove spent flower heads to encourage further displays. Plant in full sun to part-shade. It grows to 10 inches in height and spreads to 20 inches. Fertilize in late winter for best results. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

odi and John Strudwick had been vacationing with their family on Amelia Island for over 20 years when they realized that they wanted to purchase a more permanent second home. They leased several units on the island and looked at many properties until they came upon a charming penthouse at the Amelia Surf & Racquet Club, located on the beach a few doors down from The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. The Strudwicks particularly liked that the property was well-maintained and secure. “Jodi and I really loved the board members and particularly, Amelia Surf & Racquet Club’s onsite realtor, Kim Coleman,” says John. “We also love Fernandina Beach because it reminds us of our own town of Winter Park, Florida, with its unique downtown shops and great restaurants.” Jodi and John purchased the unit from its original owner, which they lovingly christened “Grandma’s Place” for the woman who had taken such good care of the penthouse. But even with all of Grandma’s tender loving care, the penthouse needed renovations and upgrades.

With the guidance and expertise of contractor Jim Cartwright, owner of Creative Builders of Nassau, Jodi and John decided to open up the kitchen, raise the ceiling, make better use of the wide entryway, reposition the hot water heater, and create a closet for their washer and dryer. “What’s interesting about this unit is that it’s quite small, with two bedrooms and two baths,” says

John. “Jodi and I wanted a place that was easy to maintain, but with enough room for our family to come visit and still feel spacious and open, with good natural light.” One of the main selling points of the unit was the view. “It’s breathtaking,” says Jodi. “To sit on the balcony with our morning cup of coffee and look out over the ocean is one of our biggest

pleasures.” The Strudwicks’ balcony has two amazing views: facing east, they look over the ocean, while facing west, they look over a beautiful tree canopy. And for a resort area that’s humming with activity, their space is surprisingly quiet and serene, another reason the Strudwicks found the Amelia Surf & Racquet Club so appealing. Jodi is responsible for most of the decorating of their home-away-fromhome. She wanted a casual, rustic, beachy feel, and purchased much of their decor and furnishings from The Plantation Shop. “We prefer to buy locally, and we really love The Plantation Shop’s customer service, and in particular, the Tennille family who owns it.” All their furnishings are easy-tomaintain and family-friendly. “We have grown children and grandchildren, and we want our family to have fun here,” says Jodi. “This is a place where we can all go to the beach and the pool, and not worry about a little beach sand or wet towels on the furniture.” One of their more unique pieces of furniture is a Murphy bed that looks like a sideboard or dining room buffet. “When we have extra guests, we can move the dining room table back a little and open the bed,” says John. “Small design elements like this make the best use of a smaller space.” Another unique design is their wine bar, which is located in the entryway of the unit. “When we saw the wide entryway, we realized there was a lot of extra space. It was the perfect fit for a bar,” says John. “We can greet our guests with a glass of wine as soon as they step into the house!” 56 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Both Jodi and John love to cook and entertain their Amelia Island friends when they come to visit, and they hope to spend more time in their penthouse once Jodi retires from her career as a registered nurse in Orlando. John has recently retired from the banking industry, and he is looking forward to their retirement years together. “There is so much to do here on Amelia Island,” says John. “We love to run, ride our bikes, and visit the more secluded beaches in the area. It’s a great place to live with an active lifestyle like ours. And we love the vibe of downtown Fernandina Beach, which has a fantastic restaurant scene.” “There’s something about Amelia Island that is really special,” says Jodi. “When we drive over the Shave Bridge, our blood pressure drops and we start to relax. A sense of calm comes over us. We’re definitely looking forward to spending more time here.”

THE
Mustard Seed CAFE Known for its commitment to organic ingredients from local farms, The Mustard Seed Café at Nassau Health Foods serves delicious, high-quality favorites for breakfast and lunch. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
T
ucked beneath a shady oak tree in the heart of Amelia Island, The Mustard Seed Café is preparing delicious food, made with organic ingredients sourced from local farms. I went in for lunch recently with my mother and found a new favorite. In 1995, I was entering my senior year in high school. Like any aspiring chef would, I opted out of the Culinary Arts program to take AP European History; you know, for fun. That’s where I met Buster Beaton. A northeast Florida native and lifelong proponent of healthy living, Buster had come to Fernandina years earlier to teach at Fernandina Beach High School. Buster recognized an opportunity to fill an unmet need on the island and opened Nassau Health Foods. His commitment to bringing quality products to the marketplace led him to dip his toe into the restaurant world, and eight years on, The Mustard Seed Café is quietly putting out some of the best food on the island. I came in on a Thursday morning before the lunch rush and sat in one of the lovely window seats. The café is located inside the store, and from my seat, I could see customers placing to-go orders and browsing the aisles for products largely unavailable at the big box stores and supermarkets. As I began to look over the menu, I noticed that despite serving exclusively local and/or organic products, the prices were in line with every other restaurant in town. I had come in a day earlier to meet with Chef Shawn Meeks, who is leading the charge to work with the local farms, drawing on his years of experience in Jacksonville. While Mom was excited about the Ginger Chicken Wrap, I was eyeing the specials board. All of it. The Ginger Chicken Wrap is made with all-natural organic chicken and wrapped in a spinach tortilla with fresh organic greens tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette. It came with a side of tomato and cucumber salad, and a pinch of homemade pickles. I left my order to the chef, and he sent out two entrees! 60 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
One was a take on a fast food classic: a grilled burger topped with cheddar cheese, over a bed of organic greens with Russian dressing, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers, and topped with
toasted sesame seeds. Let’s just say it was a big, Mac Daddy salad that would satisfy the hunger of even the largest appetites. Also on the table was a gorgeous piece of grilled Verlasso salmon on a bed of brown rice and vegetable succotash. The salmon had a very clean flavor on par with any I’ve had from the Pacific Northwest and was the obvious star, but the vegetables threatened to steal the show. Unlike traditional succotash that can be overcooked and drab, this vibrant mix of veggies remained crisp and full of flavor. We also shared a Pineapple Perfection smoothie. Somehow my mother made it to 2019 without ever having a smoothie, and this one was a hit, rich and creamy and full of fruit flavor. The Mustard Seed Café is located at 833 TJ Courson Road, in front of the Walmart, and serves from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, breakfast until noon.

summer grilling 15 minute
STORY & PHOTO BY KAREN MILLER
A
friend of mine recently told me that she and her husband don’t like to grill in the summer because it’s too hot. I agree that the middle of July in Florida is not the best time to stand over a scorching Weber tending to a pork shoulder, but a quick cookout for a small group can be done in about 15 minutes, and it will keep the heat out of your kitchen. For advice on how to make a 15-minute meal on the grill, I turn to my friend Michael Gass, chef and culinary teacher at Fernandina Beach High School, a guy who knows a thing or two about grilling. Michael suggests brining thickcut pork chops for 24 hours, and then searing them on a hot gas grill for about 6 minutes per side. Seems almost too simple, doesn’t it? But I followed his suggestion, and in less than 15-minutes, I had a dinner of grilled pork chops and
poblano peppers served over corn salsa. The key is in the early preparation: make your brine the day before your cookout, then pour it into a Ziploc bag, add your pork chops and peppers, and marinate overnight. Also on the day before, make the corn salsa and refrigerate. An hour or so before you grill the pork and peppers, remove the salsa from the refrigerator and spread it out on a large platter so it comes to room temperature. After grilling the pork and peppers, place them on top of the corn salsa, and serve. You don’t need much else with this meal except maybe sliced melon or a loaf of sourdough bread. I used a beer brine for the pork, so I’m serving the same variety of beer with the meal. My guests are pleased that they are eating a grilled meal in the comfort of an airconditioned house, and frankly, so am I!

Preparation In a Pyrex pitcher, combine the first five ingredients and stir well. Place the pork chops and peppers of your choice in a Ziploc bag and pour the brine over all. Seal and place in the refrigerator overnight, turning now and then. When you’re ready to cook, preheat gas grill to medium high, then sear the chops on each side for about 6 to 7 minutes or until done. Cook the peppers until they are charred and soft. Remove from the heat and let rest for about 2 minutes before serving over corn salsa. FRESH CORN SALSA Ingredients 3-4 cups raw corn kernels 1 cup finely chopped red onion 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro 1 to 2 medium jalapeños, finely chopped 1/4 cup lime juice to taste 1 tbsp. white wine vinegar 1/4 tsp. chili powder 1/4 tsp. ground cumin 1/2 tsp. fine sea salt Optional: 1 ripe avocado Preparation Combine all ingredients in a glass bowl, except for the avocado. Taste and adjust seasoning. Store in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Pour onto a platter and let it come to room temperature. Sprinkle with diced avocado and top with grilled pork chops and peppers. (Note: if you don’t like the crunchy texture of raw corn you may cook it, or use frozen or canned corn.)
