On Amelia Island, everything seems to have its season, and fall is definitely the season for music. With a blast of the blues, the season comes ripping in, followed by a highpressure system of swinging jazz early next month. Over the last few years, it has been a pleasure to watch these two great annual events take root. The first on the calendar, coming this month, is the Amelia Island Blues Festival, organized each year by a dedicated group of volunteers led by Jeff Malone. Jeff and his crew have put on some great weekends of music over the last few years at Main Beach, featuring some of the biggest names in the business. This year, they are moving downtown onto the waterfront for an exciting two days of music on September 13 and 14. Renowned blues guitarist Albert Castiglia returns to the festival this year for what is sure to be another show-stopping performance, and headliner Mud Morganfield, son of the legendary Chicago blues man Muddy Waters, promises to deliver one of his typically charismatic shows on Saturday night. It should make for a great weekend downtown, and the blues festival has enlisted the help of the Downtown Merchants Association and downtown restaurants to make it a memorable weekend for festival-goers. The Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival owes its success to renowned drummer Les DeMerle, an Amelia Island resident since 1991 and the driving force behind the festival. Les, who got his start with jazz greats Lionel Hampton and Harry James, swings into his tenth season as artistic director of the festival, backed by another dedicated group of volunteers who help make it such a terrific event every year. Partnering again with the Omni Hotel & Resort at Amelia Island Plantation, the Jazz Festival has found the perfect venue for its world-class shows. This year, the festival, which runs from October 6 – 13, welcomes another stellar line-up of musicians, including the retro swing band Royal Crown Revue and headliner Mindi Abair, the jazz sensation who, in the last few years, has been the featured saxophonist on American Idol, toured with Aerosmith, and sat in with Paul Schaffer and the Late Night with David Letterman band. And, as always, the festival features a full week of shows and events. Also this month, we have a feature on Stay’N Country Ranch, a local ranch that utilizes innovative therapies involving horses to help kids and adults; a feature on Kathy Miller, a local woman who has tailgated and painted at all the football stadiums in the SEC; a “Fernandina Faces” profile of John and Linda McClane; a “Backyard Adventure” that pairs local history with a couple of pints; and much more. See you around the island!

The Amelia Island Blues Festival: Bringin’ the Blues to Town On September 13 and 14, the ghosts of the Mississippi will mingle with the spirits of pirates past and present as the Amelia Island Blues Festival moves to downtown Fernandina Beach this year. Held in previous years on Main Beach, the Amelia Island Blues Festival Committee decided to make some changes to the event: move it downtown, bring it back to two days, (actually one evening and one day), and tie it closer to the community, restaurants, and other downtown establishments. This change has created an exciting and innovative schedule and line-up, which features an epic melting pot of Chicago Blues, Mississippi Delta Blues, and Blues Rock/Funk, with the addition of foot stomping blues street performer and Florida native, Ben Prestage, to fill the breaks between each act, a wonderfully rounded program. Amelia Island Blues Festival Committee President Jeff Malone is excited about the line-up this year, and also the change in venue. “I like the fact that we’re moving downtown this year,” says Malone. “We wanted to change it up, keep it fresh. We’re working with the Downtown Merchants Association and the Amelia Island Convention and Visitors Bureau this year to create a festival that benefits everyone.” The opening of the Amelia Island Blues Festival begins September 13 with a free event on Centre Street from 6 to 8 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring canned goods or a non-perishable boxed food item to be donated to the Barnabas food pantry. Opening act will be Roger “Hurricane” Wilson and the 18-piece Blues in School Band, with Director Johnny Robinson. Wilson, this year’s Master of Ceremonies, along with The Shuffle Junkies, will also perform on day two of the event, and are hosting an after-festival party at Sheffield’s at the Palace Saloon late Saturday night. Wilson began playing guitar at age nine in Keansburg, New Jersey, and over the years has gravitated to the early Delta Blues performers such as Robert Johnson and Elmore James. He has become a blues road warrior, rarely returning to his home state of Georgia. Roger’s latest CD is a live recording with Grammy winning and Blues legend Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, called Live Blues, Protected by Smith and Wilson. The 12 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • SEPTEMBER 2013

Shuffle Junkies are an Atlanta-based blues rock power trio. In addition to their growing number of originals their influences are B.B King, Eric Clapton, and Albert Collins. Albert Castiglia will also be performing at the free concert on Friday night. Castiglia made his professional debut in 1990 when he joined the Miami Blues Authority. He was named “Best Blues Guitarist” in Miami in 1997 by New Times magazine, a local alternative paper. His first big break came about when legendary harmonica player Junior Wells heard him sing and play and immediately hired him for his touring band. Castiglia will also be hosting the after party at the Palace Saloon on September 13, beginning at 10:30 p.m. On Saturday, September 14, the Amelia Island Blues Festival gates open at 10:30 a.m.—the festival runs all day until 8 p.m. The festivities and music will be located on Front Street at the Harbor, behind Atlantic Seafood. Day two features descendants from two blues legends this year, with Claudette King, youngest daughter of B.B. King, performing at 11 a.m., and headliner Mud Morganfield, the oldest son of Muddy Waters, with his show, beginning at 6:45 p.m., just in time for a perfect sunset over the harbor. Morganfield, eldest son of the undisputed King of the Blues, has been delivering his charismatic Chicago blues of the highest order to audiences around the world. Stunning audiences everywhere, Morganfield looks and sounds strikingly like his old man, so much so, that one of his dad’s former sidemen said “It’s like watching a ghost in the flesh!” Morganfield, however, also has his own very individual mojo working and will be coming to the Amelia Island Blues Festival from his recent European Tour. As Morganfield puts it, “I started to sing to show the world that dad left me here. I love and am proud to sing his songs just like I love and will always be proud of him.” Other performers featured on Saturday include the Josh Miller Band, John Nemeth, Zac Harmon, and the exciting Ana Popovic, from Memphis, Tennessee. Popovic was recently invited to play the prestigious 2013 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, where she introduced her new project—a nine-piece power blues and funk machine called Ana Popovic & Mo’ Better Love. 13 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • SEPTEMBER 2013

“We are so fortunate to have this tremendous line-up of Blues performers, along with the volunteers and sponsors that help make this event successful,” says Malone. “Sponsors like RockTenn help us raise money for Blues in Schools, to purchase new instruments for their band. In the past three years we’ve been able to contribute to Baptist Medical Center, too, along with the Fernandina Beach music program, and this year, the Barnabas food pantry. And offering our free concert on Friday night means that everyone gets a taste of the blues!” Tickets for the Amelia Island Blues Festival are $20 per person in advance, and $25 at the gate. VIP tickets are also available for $50 and include a festival tee shirt. For more information, call (404) 784-7687 or visit www.ameliaislandbluesfest.com.

The Amelia Island Jazz Festival: Bringing Amelia Island 10 Years of Swingin’ Music This year’s Amelia Island Jazz Festival, held October 6 – 13, promises to be huge party with exciting, swinging jazz, played with passion, expertise, and soul by many of today’s leading jazz artists. As the festival celebrates their tenth year, jazz lovers are looking forward to two headlining jazz superstars—smooth jazz sax sensation Mindi Abair and hot retro swing band Royal Crown Revue. One of the most recognizable jazz horn players in the U.S., Abair is also well-known for being the featured saxophonist on American Idol for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Over the past two years, she has toured the U.S. with Aerosmith as their only saxophonist since 1973, sat in for a night with Bruce Springsteen at the famed Beacon Theater, and even taken the saxophone chair over for two shows with Paul Shaffer and the Late Show with David Letterman band. As a solo artist, she has carved out her own brand as “the rocker of the jazz world,” and she adds a refreshingly unique voice to an exciting new generation of crossover artists. The Royal Crown Revue was founded in 1989 in Los Angeles, California by Mark Stern, Eddie Nichols, and Mando Dorame out of their love of Rockabilly, Punk, Jazz, Blues, Soul and other styles of roots-oriented 14 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • SEPTEMBER 2013

music. After releasing its first album on BYO Records, the band signed with Warner Bros. Currently, RCR’s lineup includes drummer Daniel Glass. The band continues to play to capacity crowds in Australia, Europe, and across the U.S. RCR has also made numerous film, television, radio, and print appearances. Each year’s talent roster has featured top notch performers such as David Benoit, Spyro Gyra, Buckwheat Zydeco, Ramsey Lewis, David Sanborn, Christian Tamburr, Harry Allen, Marcus Printup, Richie Cole, and naturally, Amelia Island’s own Les DeMerle and his Dynamic Orchestra, featuring vocalist Bonnie Eisele. DeMerle is artistic director of the festival. “We are committed to presenting high quality programs,” DeMerle states, “and the community has demonstrated its support with increasing attendance and enthusiasm.” DeMerle goes on to say that he, his wife Bonnie, the rest of the AIJF Board, and the Festival’s many hard working volunteers were excited about partnering with Omni Resort & Hotel at Amelia Island Plantation last year and reaching their world-wide market. This year, the festival is again receiving the strong support of many sponsors, especially the Amelia Island Convention & Visitors’ Bureau, as well as international jazz publications JAZZIZ and DownBeat Magazine. Many of the concerts will again be held at the Omni Resort, along with other local venues, with a week of fantastic jazz set within the beauty of a true Southern landscape. Les DeMerle launched his career as drummer for jazz vibraphone great, Lionel Hampton. He then toured for 12 years with jazz trumpet master, Harry James, recording three albums with him including the Grammy-winning King James Version. A resident of Amelia Island since 1991, Les continues to perform on cruises, at concerts and festivals with his trio, quartet, and the Dynamic Les DeMerle Big Band Orchestra with Bonnie Eisele, which has recorded 13 CDs. DeMerle’s and Eisele’s dream of starting a jazz festival on Amelia Island ten years ago was met with strong community support, drawing thousands of jazz lovers to the festival, and hundreds of volunteers and sponsors. “For ten years, I am proud to say that the Amelia Island

Amelia Island Blues Festival (404) 784-7687 ameliaislandbluesfestival.com Amelia Island Jazz Festival (904) 504-4772 ameliaislandjazzfestival.com

Jazz Festival has been growing at a feverish pitch, says DeMerle. “We are now known and recognized all over the world as a premier annual jazz event. We are deeply indebted to all of our loyal volunteers, sponsors and world-class jazz musicians who have given more than one hundred per cent. I knew for sure that we hit a home run when George Wein, founder of the Newport Jazz Festival, praised our accomplishments. Continuing with this amazing support, we can only grow from here to keep one of America’s greatest art forms, jazz, moving forward.” DeMerle’s newest CD, Feelin’ Good, on Origin Records was recently released, and will be performed on Friday, October 11, when he and Eisele open for Royal Crown Revue. In addition to the headliners this year, the Amelia Island Jazz Festival will feature numerous top-notch musicians including Mike Levine, Bobby Pickwood, DieDra & the Ruff Pro Band, El Nino & the Latin Jazz Knights, and more. The festival kicks off with a Dixieland Jazz Brunch held at David’s Restaurant on October 6, followed by Jazz in the Park, a yearly free concert held at Amelia Park. Other festivities throughout the week include Jazz at the Movies, a Blues Concert and Wine Tasting, a Late Night Super Jam Session, and a Drum Clinic Spectacular. The Amelia Island Jazz Festival welcomes Craviotto Drum Company as the official drum of the AIJF. Craviotto has built two custom state-of-the-art drum sets that will be debuted at this year’s festival and at the Saturday afternoon Drum Clinic/Master Class with Daniel Glass and Les DeMerle. Master craftsman and drum maker John Craviotto will emcee the drum event. The Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival also provides youngsters the opportunity to learn about America’s unique musical art form with “Jazz in the Schools”. The festival donates part of its proceeds toward a scholarship program to fund college educations for aspiring jazz musicians. For information on the Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival or to buy tickets in advance, or to become a sponsor, visit their web site at www.ameliaislandjazzfestival.com or call the Festival Hotline at (904) 504-4772.

BEN BYRNS RUNWAY RALLY TO RAISE MONEY FOR LOCAL CHARITIES The Ben Byrns 5K Runway Rally will be held on Saturday, September 15 at 8 a.m. at the Fernandina Beach airport, on Airport Road just off the Amelia Island Parkway. Registration forms are available at Current Running, 815 S. Eighth St., Pipeline Surf Shop, 2022 First Ave. at Sadler Road, and at www.ameliaislandrunners. com Registration is $20 through September 1st, and $25 thereafter. The fun run-andwalk will not be competitive, but a race clock will be at the finish line, and the first male and female finishers will receive a certificate for a sightseeing flight around Amelia Island. Participants will also receive T-shirts. The run/ walk will start and finish at the airport gates, near the Airport Administration Office east of the main terminal. Ben Byrns, a Fernandina Beach High School graduate, was attending Florida State College and living in Jacksonville Beach when a roommate found him on a Saturday morning last February. The cause of death was listed as an overdose of a pain-relieving drug. He left behind a grieving family, a multitude of friends, and questions that can never be answered. His parents, Ken and Laurie Byrns of Fernandina Beach, are determined that something good must come of the tragedy. “Something horrible happening to Ben has just got to help someone else,” says Laurie. The Ben Byrns 5K Runway Rally will raise money for the Nassau Humane Society, honoring Ben’s love for animals, and the Boys & Girls Clubs.

arolyn and Kenneth Rowe have been married for 60 years and selling artwork for over 40 years. What is the key to their successful marriage and their diverse businesses? “We like to keep busy,” laughs Carolyn. “I have always needed an outlet, and an excuse to go shopping.” Kenneth adds: “We’ve always had something going on.” And those “goings on” have included owning and running restaurants, hotels, and antique shops in various locations around the United States. At present, though, the couple owns and operates Casablanca, a home goods and interior design establishment on Sadler Road. Previously located on South Fourteenth Street and named Gallery of Amelia, Casablanca has expanded their inventory to include fine art, exceptional furnishings, antiques, and unique gift items. When the couple lived in Europe, they became interested in art and began collecting. “I love beautiful things,” states Carolyn. “I love the craftsmanship and history behind each piece.” “While we were living in Europe, we developed an appreciation for European art and design,” says Kenneth. “We were eager

to share our tastes with our Amelia Island friends.” But Carolyn’s customers swear that she was born with a good eye for interior design and classical paintings. And when they want a new look for their home, Carolyn is happy to come to their home and make some suggestions. “More often than not, a home’s décor can be freshened up by adding some new items to their existing furnishings. There is no need to completely redecorate their home.” And, as Carolyn and Kenneth continue to upgrade their stock to include more unusual and interesting home goods, many of their customers come back again and again for Carolyn’s wise advice and designer’s eye, calling her the “Phoebe Howard” of Amelia Island. And although it may seem like an exhausting line of work, for Carolyn to be working in her retail store nearly every day, she just shrugs and smiles. “I’m surrounded by beautiful things. My customers come in to talk about home decorating, which I love. Those customers are also my best friends. My store is like my home. And I like being here.” For more information about Casablanca or to schedule an appointment, call (904) 415-1540.

eese Haley grew up in a small town in South Georgia around agriculture, turf farms, and gardening, so naturally his love of landscaping has been life-long. He furthered his education by earning a degree in Horticultural Science from Florida Southern College, before opening his own unique business that combines his passion for the outdoors with his genuine interest in people and places, and where they call home. “There is nothing I enjoy more than providing my clients with fine service, and helping them showcase their properties with outdoor lighting.” says Haley. “Full Moon Lighting is not just my business, it’s my life.” His business, which operates out of Brunswick, services clients in Georgia, Florida, and even South Carolina. As a fourth generation small business owner, Haley learned the art of customer service from his parents and grandparents as he helped in the business that his family has owned and operated since 1910. Reese’s desire to go the extra mile to satisfy his clients and to meet their needs shows in how he treats his clients and how he runs his own company. “I wanted to start an outdoor lighting company that would offer the best in customer service and products to our clients. I have seen this business grow quickly, and I believe that is due to the quality that we offer. We aim to give our clients the very best in outdoor lighting so that their properties are as captivating at night as by day,” says Haley. For more information, call (912) 268-4490 or visit www.fullmoomlightingllc.com.

f you are looking for the added living space of a glass room or screen room; a screen enclosure to keep your pool, patio, or deck clean, safe and leak free; a pergola for shade and architectural beauty; or an arbor to enhance the beauty of your yard, Impact Enclosures will create the quality enclosure that meets your personal style and needs. In a very short time, Ryan Hammers and Justin McCullers have earned a lot of respect in this growing Florida industry. Graduates of the University of North Florida, the two young men began their company in Jacksonville with the goal of creating quality, long-lasting outdoor structures with unique, customized designs. “Our objective is to listen to our clients’ needs and educate them on the many available options,” says Hammers. “We will do our very best to make your budget work, while designing the ideal addition or enclosure for your home or yard.” The experienced staff members at Impact Enclosures are determined to create each project with great care and the highest level of craftsmanship. “Quality craftsmanship and commitment to customer satisfaction are our company priorities,” says Justin last name here. “We never walk away from a job until the customer is completely satisfied.” Impact Enclosure’s structures improve the function and aesthetic beauty of any home. “We will create and build an enclosure that will heighten the atmosphere and beauty of your outdoor living space,” says Hammers. A Healing Connection Stay’N Country Ranch Uses Innovative Therapies with Horses to Promote Healing BY DICKIE ANDERSON

S

tay’N Country Ranch is a family-owned and operated ranch just off Amelia Island in Nassau County. In contrast to the nearby beautiful beaches of Amelia Island, you will find over 40 acres of oak trees, stocked ponds, nature trails, a 20-stall horse barn with 2 indoor arenas, a walk-in horse shower, tack lockers, a large outdoor arena, and a wonderful party barn ready for anything from a birthday party to a rustic wedding. Missy and Schad Freeman have converted a property once used to raise chickens into an equine center that offers not only boarding for horses but a variety of activities open to the public. Missy Freeman met her husband, Shad, when he was playing arena football and she was coach of the cheerleaders. The couple is raising their daughter, Hayzley, along with the family’s assortment of child-friendly animals—Nigerian dwarf goats, ducks, a pot-bellied pig, and chickens. Missy Freeman is living her dream. As a girl, she loved horses and took every opportunity to be around them. Now,

in addition to their full-service boarding center, the Freemans have recently opened a sister business, Stay’N Connected, which offers special programs that teach life and coping skills to children and adults. By using horses and nature, the program helps individuals make powerful connections on a social, cognitive and emotional level. Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) and Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) are both experimental forms of learning and psychotherapy that involve horses. In an educational setting, horses and the lifestyle that goes along with taking care of them offer opportunities to acquire critical life and communication skills. Lisa Gamble is a speech language pathologist who works with children every day. She has four horses currently boarding at Stay ’N Country, and she knows from her own personal experience, as well as those of her horse-loving daughters, how helpful Equine Facilitated Learning can be for any child. It is particularly effective for children with language delays,

including those along the autism spectrum. “Bringing these children out of a therapy room and into an alternative setting, such as the Stay’N Connected program, can truly enhance their learning,” says Gamble. Another important part of the program is Shelley Mitchell, Growing Awards, who brings her 17 years experience in Special Education with a background in Applied Behavioral Analysis BCABA, Exceptional Student Education (K-12) Certification, and American Sign Language (ASL), as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Management. Who can benefit from this innovative therapy? It is designed to assist children and adults with ADHD, behavioral disorders, autism and speaking/learning processing disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The concept that horses might be helpful or healing to people struggling with mental health issues is based on the understanding that horses are extremely sensitive to changes in human beings. Due to

their heightened sensitivity, horses react and respond to people differently based upon the person’s emotional state. The horse acts as a big biofeedback machine, providing the client and the therapist with information regarding the client’s moods, as well as changes within those moods. The Boys and Girls Club and Oceans of Fun Reading Initiative have brought groups of children to Stay’N Country for programs that teach life skills and offer what is for many a first-time exposure to horses and a country environment. The children work through a carefully planned curriculum that teaches youngsters about horses. They learn the different parts of the horse and have an opportunity to groom and even paint the horses. The connection between an animal and child or adult struggling to communicate may offer the perfect opportunity to open doors long thought to be locked. Missy Freeman and her Stay’N Connected is helping to make that happen.

tailgating Kathy Miller tailgates her way through the entire SEC BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PAINTINGS BY KATHY MILLER

A

melia Islanders Kathy and Dave Miller are always ready for some football. The passionate couple attends as many University of Florida football games as they can. Kathy, a talented artist living on Amelia Island, was not always a Gator fan. Growing up in Knoxville and attending the University of Tennessee she, naturally, bleeds orange. To say that the SEC is big in Kathy’s family is an understatement. Her father graduated from the University of South Carolina. What turned her into an avid Gator? Her son and daughter both graduated from the University of Florida. She married an ACC man, her husband having graduated from Duke. His father, Dave Miller Sr., not only graduated from Florida, but has made significant contributions to his alma mater. He established the Miller Center for Retailing Education and Research in the College of Business. Dave and his sister, Clara, serve on boards of both the College of Business and the Miller Retail Center. In addition, the Boy’s and Girl’s Club in Yulee is named the Miller Freedom Center to honor his support. Kathy’s bubbling enthusiasm embraces not only the football on the field, but all the fun and entertaining that is so much a part of college football. She loves the challenge of creating the ultimate tailgate experience—perfect food and drink with the appropriate decorating theme, usually blue and orange! She sports a button with a large orange T and a Gator Mom button at every game. Kathy Miller’s collection of colorful paintings, “Tailgating through the SEC,” celebrates the tradition of football tailgating. The series of colorful, vibrant paintings portrays the treasured traditions associated with the 14 member schools. In researching each painting, Miller has taken hundreds of pictures, collected wonderful recipes, and researched each school’s storied traditions. Continued on page 47.

Kathy Miller’s Ultimate Florida Tailgate Menu CARLA’S GATOR EGGS Everyone loves a good deviled egg. This recipe has a unique twist twist, Wickles Relish and Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning. PAT’S OLIVES Green, pimento stuffed olives, wrapped in cream cheese, then rolled in pecans. Serve sliced with cut side up showing the pimento. CORN & CUCUMBER SALAD Shoe Peg corn, cucumbers, green pepper, diced pimento, celery and onions tossed with a sweet red vinaigrette. This unique salad is a little sweet and a little colorful with loads of flavor. ORZO SALAD WITH ARUGULA, CRANBERRIES AND FETA This colorful salad can be served chilled or at room temperature, which makes it perfect for a tailgate. Toasted pine nuts, basil, olive oil and a little fresh squeezed lemon makes it delightful. This can be made a day ahead. CUBAN SLIDERS This is my version of the famous ham, swiss cheese, poppy seed minis. I use Cuban sandwich ingredients. Ham, roasted pork tenderloin, salami, swiss cheese, yellow mustard, and dill pickle slices. Bake, wrapped in foil and transport in heated travel packs. LIME BLUEBERRY TIRAMISU Mascarpone cheese, cream, confectioner’s sugar, lady fingers, limeade and blueberry pie filling make an easy, very tasty dessert. Easy to make and transport. BEVERAGES For early game times, Florida Orange Mimosas made with fresh Florida orange juice and champagne. Delicious Bloody Marys recipe from Salty Dog Saloon in Gainesville.

John and Linda McClane BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTO BY BILL RASER

L

inda and John McClane are part of the fabric of the Amelia Island community. Five generations of John’s family have lived on the island. His grandfather was the first county health doctor, and his father was the first optometrist on the island. John followed in his father’s footsteps and has been practicing optometry on the island for 34 years. The couple met at the University of Florida when they were freshmen. After finishing school in Gainesville, they moved to Chicago, where John attended optometry school, but they always planned to return to Fernandina Beach so that John could join his father’s practice. The busy practice has expanded through the years, and now it offers full-scope vision, medical, and surgical services. “I will have to practice another 18 years to catch up to my father who practiced for 52 years!” says John. The familiar office on the corner of South Fourteenth Street and Atlantic Avenue was designed to be both an office and the family home. The office was built in 1957 and faced Fourteenth Street. John recalls moving into the home, which faced Atlantic Avenue, in 1964 on the day before Hurricane Dora hit Amelia Island. He remembers Amelia Island as a wonderful place to grow up. “We thought everyone grew up having a lighthouse, a fort to explore, and a beach to swim and play on.” When you think of theater on Amelia Island, you think of Linda McClane. Active from the earliest days of the Amelia Community Theatre, Linda and John were two of its 81 original charter members. She has volunteered at the theater since its founding, becoming the theater’s managing director

in 1998, first as a volunteer, and then as its first paid employee, albeit part-time, in 2010. Early performances were in the high school auditorium, before the group purchased the old school board office on Cedar Street in the late 1980’s. McClane’s passion and energy have been an essential part of the evolution of this successful community theater. In 2010, a main stage theater was completed, opening with The Pirates of Penzance. The original theater continues to operate as Studio 209. This fall, ACT begins its thirty-third season. Linda has performed in a dozen main stage productions and many of the Peppermint Players shows. The Peppermint Players are a troop of actors who offer programs to Nassau County schools. Some of her favorite roles on the main stage have included Rumors, The Dixie Swim Club, Mark Twin’s The Diaries of Adam and Eve, and Blithe Spirit. She has also directed over 15 main stage shows, most recently Love, Loss and What I Wore. “One show that I directed that will always be special to me is The Rainmaker, which opened on September 13, 2001, just two days after the events of 9/11. Because it was a show about love, hope, and faith, we decided to go ahead with the opening, and I have always been so glad that we did,” shares McClane. The McClanes have two adult sons: Jack, who is attending medical school in Oregon, and David, who works at Yosemite National Park. Both boys are avid climbers and love living out West. Linda has been participating in Tai Chi at the YMCA for 12 years, and John enjoys boating and riding his bike around Amelia Island.

in the garden

superb succulents When using hardscape in your garden, attractive succulents and cacti are a great addition.

BY BETTY MORRELL

S

ummer will be winding down soon, and plants will be in need of trimming, pinching, and dead-heading. Now is the time to plan changes to your garden, which you can make when the weather becomes more people-friendly. In thinking about a new garden or re-vamping an old one, it’s always fun to work a little hardscape into it. When you can’t think of a plant, shrub, or specimen tree to put in, consider using a large rock or boulder. It will take up the space of the planting, and it can be quite striking with a small stone (like river rock) as a base. You can also cluster smaller rocks in the bed to compliment the large rock. In a hardscape, succulents can be scattered throughout the bed, adding color and texture. Many will spread, and they look attractive. Different hardy cacti are also pleasing to the eye, and can be mixed with succulents. Cacti and succulents are tropical plants that endure dry spells by storing water in their stems or leaves. They need well-drained or sandy soils, or they can be left in containers. They thrive on a light feeding during the growing season and an occasional deep soaking, plus lots

of sunlight. For the most fragile of these plants, you can sink the pots into the stone with the plant so they can be taken up during a freeze. Many are frost tolerant. Soap Aloe (aloe saponaria) is an unusual succulent plant. It can be tucked into the crevices of rock, or nestled between smaller rocks. It has foot-wide, flattened rosettes of fleshy leaves, spotted with white, but when topped with 2 1/2 foot sprays of shrimp pink, red, orange or yellow flowers, it is really exotic. The fleshy leafed succulent Mother of Thousands, also known as the maternity plant, has long, arrowhead-shaped leaves that are spotted with purple, and toothed notches along the edges in which small plantlets are produced. They will fall off and sprout everywhere, so it will need tending. The well-known Snake Plant is also a succulent. It can grow anywhere and survive for months without water. Devil’s

45 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • SEPTEMBER 2013

Backbone (pedilanathus tithymaloides) needs protection in a hard frost, but it is a pretty bush. Leaves can be plain green or green and white variegated, with a touch of pink in sunny gardens. Devil’s Backbone is a succulent, but it is sometimes called “red bird cactus” because its red flowers resemble birds in silhouette. This plant would be eyecatching planted alongside a big boulder. The Kalanchoe (kalanchoe blossfeldiana) plant has large, flat, rounded leaves that are sometimes thinly edged with red. In late winter or spring, airy stems hold large clusters of small but cheerful bright red, orange, yellow, pink or salmon flowers. These succulents are easy to root and spread around. Burn Plant (aloe vera) can be planted in sun, part-sun, or part-shade. This succulent has leaves that grow up to about a foot long, and has flowers that are yellow and produced on a dense spike up to three feet long. Succulents come in many shapes, sizes textures and colors, so you have a large variety to choose from. As always, e-mail any questions to bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

Tailgating continued from page 35. “The research is not hard work – it is lots of fun,” says Kathy, with a smile. This year, she and her husband will travel to LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Alabama, and South Carolina. They will be cheering loudly at all home Florida games and, especially, the biggest game of all—the traditional Florida-Georgia game (or Georgia-Florida game, if you favor the red and black). Kathy graduated with a degree in textile and clothing/fashion merchandising from Tennessee and had a successful career at Proffitt’s Department Store. While living in Ponte Vedra, she started painting lessons with Ellen Diamond, a well-known artist and teacher. She has been enjoying her classes for more than 13 years. Even after moving to Amelia Island, she continues to travel to Ponte Vedra for weekly lessons. Miller has developed a distinctive style. Her acrylic paintings are full of color and energy. The longer you look at each painting, the more detail you notice. As she talks about each school’s painting, she smiles as she points out special details that are meaningful to those loyal to that particular school. The Quad at Alabama, Toomer’s Corner at Auburn, the Vol Navy at Tennessee, Dickson Street in Fayetteville, the Swamp at Florida, the Arch at Georgia, The Grove at Ole Miss, the Junction at Mississippi State, Vandyville, Kentucky Bluegrass Country, Death Valley at LSU, the Cockaboose Railroad at South Carolina, and strong traditions at Aggieland and Missouri. The paintings are available for sale. Fine art prints on canvas or premium quality poster prints can be purchased on her website (www.kathymillertime. com). Greeting cards are available as well. Look for Kathy and her paintings at The Plantation Shops at Palmetto Walk during Florida-Georgia weekend. Her website demonstrates the depth and breadth of Kathy’s talent and offerings. She also has developed a popular blog that shares her adventures on the tailgating trail. Future plans include a tailgating cookbook and paintings of schools from additional conferences.

or more than a decade, Dale Cole and his talented team at Cole Builders have designed and built beautiful, new custom homes in the greater Jacksonville area. When Dale and his wife, Amy, were ready to build their own new home, they decided to make a move out of Jacksonville to be closer to Amelia Island. “We are quite partial to Amelia Island,” states Dale. They also had a house in mind they wanted to build, a coastal, country-style home, large enough for their family of seven. That’s right, with three boys and two girls, the Cole family’s home needed six bedrooms and four bathrooms, and lots of space for a growing family. The Cole house is located on the saltwater marsh and enjoys lovely, panoramic views of birds, marsh wildlife, and the changing seasons. Dale and Amy designed their two-story coastal home so that, as you enter their house, you immediately see the marshlands. That

means lots of windows, and the perfect plan to place the house in just the right spot for optimal views of the landscape. The Cole family loves the outdoors. They are fond of fishing, boating, and jet skiing, and their dock and quay offer hours of family fun. An enormous sportstyle pool and outdoor kitchen provide the family with a great place to hold parties and barbeques. The pool, which is deep in the middle and shallow on the ends, features illuminated deck jets, glass mosaic tile, a swim-up bar with seven bar stools, and a sun ledge. The kitchen has a top-of-the-line grill, side burner, and refrigerator, with lots of counter space for a food and beverage buffet. The family is partial to sports, and they like to have friends over on game day. Hidden in the rocks near the pool are surround sound speakers, so no matter where you are, you can be part of the action. In the back of the house is a screen enclosure featuring an outdoor

living room with a wide screen television and fireplace. Guests can watch the game or swim in the pool, and still be together as a group. Now that’s perfect party planning! Dale and Amy love to cook, and their kitchen is the busiest room in the house, outside of the family room, where the seven of them spend most of their time together. The kitchen cabinets are solid wood with a glaze finish. There’s lots of counter space, an induction cook top, and substantial appliances; the high-quality granite tops are durable and beautiful.

Dale and Amy worked together on their home—Dale is the builder and Amy is the decorator. Both understand the value of natural light, and they used the position of the home and windows to their full advantage. The entryway is nineteen feet tall, with a dormer, and the light comes in and casts a pleasing glow on the acacia wooden floors. “We really love the wood,” says Dale. The natural lighting brings out the grain of the wood.” Regarded as one of finest new home builders in the greater Jacksonville area, Cole Builders consider themselves

much more than builders and general contractors. “We are a licensed, bonded, and insured family-owned design-build firm,” says Dale. “We’re dedicated to providing the best customer service and quality work in the industry. We build our clients’ homes with the same passion as we build our own.” When Dale and Amy are not building homes or raising children, they enjoy travelling to Antigua and the Bahamas. But no matter where they go, they look forward to coming back home, to their place on the marsh, their beautiful family, and their rooms with a view.

Tasty’s FRESH BURGERS & FRIES With mouthwatering burgers, hand-cut French fries, and real milkshakes, Tasty’s is an island favorite. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

I

t’s surprising that Tasty’s Fresh Burgers and Fries has only been in business for eighteen months. You’d think, judging by the line of people at the counter that sometimes stretches out the door, that they have been here forever. Owners Katy and Chad Dougherty, along with Chef Justin Southwell, knew that Amelia Island needed a great burger joint, and they were just the right people to open one, right on the corner of South Eighth and Centre streets.

My friend, Lisa, and I met at Tasty’s recently for lunch, eager to try some of their burger varieties. I have a tendency to order the Classic Tasty Cheeseburger, served “Tasty All The Way,” with pickles, lettuce, onion, tomato, and Tasty Sauce. It’s an absolutely fantastic burger. But Katy suggested I step out of my comfort zone and try something new. Tasty’s offers daily burger specials, so we decided to try the Bison Burger, a onethird pound burger, seared and served with lettuce, tomato, onion, and mayonnaise. Bison is very similar to beef, but a little sweeter, and this burger was perfectly cooked, medium, the way

I like it, and juicy. We also shared one of Tasty’s special Wedge Salads, a Turkey Wedge. I often shy away from turkey burgers because they can be dry, but not Tasty’s! The “wedge” is a large slice of iceberg lettuce, topped with a seasoned and seared turkey burger, and served with bacon, Feta cheese, pickled red onions, cucumber, tomato, and honey mustard dressing. This is an excellent choice if you’re not into bread or rolls; the flavor and texture of all the components is a real winner. Tasty’s also offers hot dogs, so we sampled their Chili Dog, topped with Tasty’s homemade chili and onion. I actually consider myself a hot dog aficionado, and Tasty’s dogs are the best in town—all beef, and served on potato rolls. I also love their Chicago dog, and highly recommend it if you’ve never tried one. The combination of mustard, onion, relish, sport peppers, tomatoes, pickles, and celery salt is a true American classic. And what is my favorite thing on Tasty’s menu? The fries, of course. Lisa and I agreed that there is nothing better than fresh, hand-cut French fries. We had a basket of the Crabby Fries, and the potatoes were perfectly sliced, fried golden brown, dusted with Old Bay seasoning, and served with tartar sauce. Brilliant! The Sweet Potato Fries served with Chipotle Aioli—a spicy mayonnaise —are Lisa’s favorite, and I agreed. I will definitely order those on my next visit. And what goes better with a great burger than a real milkshake? Tasty’s makes their milkshakes just like an old fashioned soda fountain. I had an Orange Creamsicle Shake, and Lisa tried the Jamocha Shake. Both were thick and dreamy rich, reminiscent of simpler times. Tasty’s also serves other traditional beverages, like root beer floats, plus they offer beer and wine. Katy’s husband, Chad, built the restaurant himself, and there is plenty of seating inside and out. The kitchen is sparkling, and Tasty’s staff is friendly and accommodating, all 25 of them. For dining in or taking out, Tasty’s fast paced atmosphere means you’ll never have to wait long to get your food. They are open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., except on Sundays, when they close at 8 p.m.

crawling through history pub crawl through history BY KAREN MILLER PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

O

ne ticket, four pubs, a wealth of historical information about historic downtown Fernandina Beach, and a good time had by all – that’s what the Amelia Island Museum of History’s Pub Crawl is all about. Held every Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the Pub Crawl is an opportunity to soak in some interesting stories about our downtown historical district, while soaking up some spirits in our local pubs. I had heard that the Pub Crawl was getting rave reviews, so I decided to buy a couple of tickets for me and my friend, Bruce. It was Bruce’s birthday, and I thought a Pub Crawl would be a lot more fun than a new tie. So we called the museum and reserved two spots with Thea Seagraves, Tour Coordinator. We met Tour Guide Steve Sansbury at the Depot, where Centre and Front streets meet. Steve is one of the co-authors of the Pub Crawl curriculum. Although the museum guides appear as if they lead their tours spontaneously, they are trained docents who provide accurate historic accounts and narratives. Steve has been leading the Pub Crawl tours for four years. He and his wife, Penny, are both history buffs. Upon moving to Amelia Island full-time seven years ago, the couple began volunteering at the Amelia Island Museum of History, leading other tours and working as docents inside the museum. Steve first took us to the famous Palace Saloon, where Bruce had a beer, and we learned about the history of the celebrated tavern, which is the oldest continually operating bar in the state of Florida. Built in 1881 by Louis Hirth, the Palace has an amazing exposition bar, hand-crafted of black oak

and black walnut. The Palace’s other features include its handpainted murals and decorative tin ceiling. Our next stop was The Florida House Inn, built by David Yulee in 1857. The Florida House is the oldest continually operating inn in the state of Florida, and has played host to such dignitaries as President Grant, Jose Marti, and Oliver Hardy. The inn’s bar is beautifully decorated with mermaid art, including a stunning mirror. Steve told us a lot about the history of the Florida House, especially about Marti, the journalist and writer who was a political activist in Cuba’s revolution against Spain. The Inn’s pub plays host to numerous events, including weddings, parties, open mic nights, and a songwriters’ showcase. Their restaurant specializes in true Southern cuisine, served family style. Next stop was Café Karibo. The building, although not as old as others we saw, nonetheless has a history of its own. It used to be a Ford Dealership, and David Yulee’s home was across the street. When you purchased a car there, you would not drive away with it. Instead, someone from the dealership would deliver the car to your home. Café Karibo, in addition to its eclectic menu, brews their own beer, and their pub is lively and friendly. Our last pub was actually one of the newest on Amelia Island—The Salty Pelican, a seafood restaurant that overlooks the Amelia River, providing us with a beautiful sunset. The building had been in disrepair for years, but it now offers local seafood, a nice bar with a great view, and a pretty end to our historic Pub Crawl. For more information about the Pub Crawl, call Thea Seagraves at (904) 261-7378, ext. 105.
