Autumn on Amelia Island also means the annual return of the Amelia Island Jazz Festival, and that is always—like jazz music itself—a breath of fresh air into our everyday lives.

When the month of September rolls in and the temperatures finally begin to cool, we begin to wake from our summer reverie and find ourselves occupied with getting the kids back on their school schedules and ourselves back to our usual routines. As memories of summer fun slowly recede, we settle back into the responsibilities that make up our lives. But thankfully, autumn on Amelia Island also means the annual return of the Amelia Island Jazz Festival, and that is always—like jazz music itself—a breath of fresh air blowing into the settled habits of our everyday life. The Amelia Island Jazz Festival, returning this fall for its thirteenth season, owes its success to renowned drummer Les DeMerle, the driving force behind the festival. An Amelia Island resident since 1991 with his wife, vocalist Bonnie Eisele, Les got his start in the business with jazz greats Lionel Hampton and Harry James. Les is artistic director of the festival, and he is backed by a hard-working group of volunteers who help make the jazz festival a terrific event each year. Returning to its roots in downtown Fernandina Beach, the festival runs from October 2 – 9 and welcomes another outstanding line-up of world-class musicians, including as headliners the celebrated tenor saxophonist Houston Person and the dynamic trumpeter and vocalist Bria Skonberg, who has rapidly become a top draw on the New York City music scene. As always, the festival features a full week of shows and events, kicking off with the annual free Sunday concert in Amelia Park, then continuing through the week with Jump, Jive & Wail, a swing concert and dance party with the Dynamic Les DeMerle Band featuring Bonnie Eisele, and the popular Latin Jazz Night in its traditional Thursday night slot with the sizzling hot, award-winning, and internationally famous Trio Caliente. Additionally, the entertaining and fun late night Jazz Jams return following the headliner performances Friday and Saturday nights, this year at Arte Pizza in the Historic District. It promises to be a great week of music, as it is every year. Also in this issue, we take a look at a new program called Rock Steady Boxing, which has recently come to Amelia Island offering help to people suffering from Parkinson’s disease; check in with a local group of pet owners who generously share their time and their furry friends offering companionship to patients and seniors who find themselves isolated by old age or illness; meet an Amelia Island resident undergoing cancer treatment who writes a popular weekly blog that gives encouragement to many; enjoy a “Backyard Adventure” under the moonlight at Fort Clinch State Park; and much more.

FESTIVAL 2016
Now in its 13th year, the Amelia Island Jazz Festival celebrates jazz, the uniquely American art form, with another stellar line-up of outstanding musicians. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE AMELIA ISLAND JAZZ FESTIVAL
T
he foundations of jazz extend back in time to nineteenthcentury slave work songs, field shouts, sorrow songs, and spirituals, whose harmonic, rhythmic, and melodic elements were predominantly African. Over time, these elements gradually blended, and the first music that we now call jazz was played by African-American and Creole musicians in New Orleans in the early twentieth century. At its infancy, jazz contained elements of ragtime, marching band music, and the blues. Over the coming decades, this native-born form of musical expression evolved into swing, bebop, hard bop, cool jazz, fusion, smooth jazz, and contemporary
jazz. Truly, the wide-ranging sounds of jazz capture the dynamic complexity of the American experience. Equally telling, the medium of jazz has been embraced by musicians and music lovers spanning the globe from Europe to Asia to Africa. The Amelia Island Jazz Festival is dedicated to building upon this rich cultural foundation by exposing thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds to the sounds, excitement, and vitality of great jazz music, and this year marks its thirteenth anniversary. “There is so much that is special about this year,” says Les DeMerle, Artistic Director
Les DeMerle
Bria Skonberg
Steve Strawley Doug Matthews
and founder of the festival. “The Amelia Island Jazz Festival is returning to its roots, with concerts being held entirely in historic downtown Fernandina Beach. From Dixieland, Big Band, Swing, and BeBop, to Latin, R&B, Smooth Jazz, and Contemporary, all of these styles will be performed and played with expertise and soul by some of the world’s finest musicians during the eight-day event.” In 2001, legendary drummer DeMerle’s longtime dream of creating a diversified jazz festival on Amelia Island came to fruition. He and his wife, renowned vocalist Bonnie Eisele, produced the festival for three years prior to its incorporation as a non-profit 501(c)3 tax exempt organization. Since then, with the help of generous sponsors and hardworking volunteers, the AIJF has grown into an event which attracts major jazz artists and attendees from across the country. But Les insists there will be much more. “Even after 13 years, we’re still in our infancy,” he says, “and we expect to continue towards our goal of building the festival into a nationally recognized event.” Celebrated tenor saxophonist Houston Person and hot young trumpeter/ vocalist Bria Skonberg are set to headline the 2016 Amelia Island Jazz Festival. Their concerts will be held
on October 7 and 8, respectively, at 7 p.m. at St. Michael’s Church Parish Hall on 505 Broome Street. “We are excited and honored to have such fine performers headlining our festival this year,” says DeMerle. “These artists demonstrate the cultural diversity and vitality of great jazz.” A highly influential player with dozens of albums to his credit, Person has recorded for a number of labels including Savoy, Mercury, Prestige, Muse, and presently, High Note Records. His soulful, bluesy, and thick-toned tenor style, in the tradition of the great Gene Ammons, has been particularly notable in his work with various jazz organ trios. In describing his philosophy of jazz, Person says, “Well, it’s uplifting and important – and a release and a relief. That’s what it is to me. It’s important that it’s relaxing. Something that when the end of the day comes, after a hard and frustrating day out in the world, that relieves you.” “I have known Les DeMerle for over twenty years,” Person continues, “and I know this is going to be one swingin’ festival. At 81 years old, for me to be excited is really a big thing! See y’all there at my Friday night show, and we will all be right in the groove!”

Bria Skonberg has rapidly become a top draw in New York City, and she is poised to be one of the most versatile and imposing musicians of her generation.Wielding a unique blend of modern-day pop sensibility and sizzling musicianship, Skonberg aims for a sense of allure. Elite jazz chops, artfully mixed with worldly rhythms and contemporary songwriting, result in a sophisticated pop sound closely resembling that of Michael Bublé, Diana Krall, and Harry Connick Jr. “I am so excited to come to Amelia Island and headline the Saturday night October 8 concert,” says Skonberg. “The buzz in the industry about the Amelia Island Jazz Festival is so hot right now that every headliner wants to participate. I am honored I was chosen to perform and I promise to give it my all. Looking forward to meeting all of my fans, and also making some new ones!” The AIJF will take place at various locations in Fernandina Beach from October 2 to 9, and will kick off with its annual free concert in Amelia Park on Sunday, October 2. Additional shows will include Jump Jive & Wail, on Wednesday, October 5, a swing concert and dance party with the Dynamic Les DeMerle band featuring vocalist Bonnie Eisele, and the popular Latin Jazz Night in its traditional Thursday night slot on October
6, with the sizzling hot, award-winning, and internationally famous Trio Caliente. Additionally, the always entertaining and fun late night Jazz Jams, starring the AIJF’s 2016 musicians including 2016 AIJF Scholarship winner, Thomas Milovac, and hosted by jazz vocalist Lisa Kelly, will follow the headliner sets on October 7 and 8, staged at “Dizzy’s Den” at Arte Pizza. The festival is scheduled to end on a swinging note on Sunday, October 9, with a Dixie to Swing Jazz Brunch, featuring DeMerle’s Spare Rib Six, including vocalist Bonnie Eisele. David Le Batard, the Park West Gallery Artist also known as the artist “Lebo”, will loan his artistic talents to the 13th annual Amelia Island Jazz Festival as its official artist. Lebo follows Park West Gallery’s Marcus Glenn and Tim Yanke, who served as the official artists in 2014 and 2015. Lebo will create art that is featured on posters, shirts, flyers, and other materials related to the festival. “Being chosen for the Amelia Island Jazz Festival is a joy for many reasons, not the least of which is how greatly music, and in particular jazz, has affected my approach to art,” says Lebo. “The mix of extreme dedication along with individual expression is a perfect one, and one that I learned from being a fan of jazz.”

“Lebo is a natural choice for a festival centered on music,” says DeMerle. “He has traveled the world to paint alongside musicians that inspired him, creating art live on stage during performances of acts such as the Beastie Boys, Paul Oakenfold and Willie Nelson. Lebo also served as the official artist for the 2003 Latin Grammy Awards, and was commissioned to create a work of art for Billy Joel in 2015.”
JAZZ IN THE SCHOOLS The purpose of this program is to expose young people to the art of jazz, while motivating more students to pursue jazz as a musical endeavor. Featuring workshops led by master musicians for grade school, middle school, and high school students, more than 2,000 area students attend this program each year. In 2015, the festival held workshops at Fernandina Beach Middle School, Fernandina Beach High School, and Yulee Middle School. Each year, the festival’s educational programs culminate in the Amelia Island Jazz Festival Scholarship. This financial award goes to deserving high school musicians who demonstrate strong
potential to perform jazz at the collegiate level. “This scholarship is awarded on an annual basis to a graduating high school senior,” says DeMerle. “The scholarship is used toward college expenses necessary to earn a major in jazz music. It is the desire of the Jazz Festival Board to help preserve jazz, this all-American art form, by supporting and inspiring young, talented artists who are pursuing their dream of becoming jazz musicians.” This year’s scholarship winner is 18-year-old bassist Thomas Milovac. “We played two sold-out Jazz Party Nights at Horizon’s Restaurant in August featuring our scholarship winner,” says DeMerle. “His talent is outstanding, and I know he will excite the audience at his October 3 performance at our AIJF Sponsors Party, along with the headlining shows, and the late night Jazz Jam sessions. We can’t wait for you to meet Thomas!”
JAZZ FOR SENIORS The Jazz for Seniors concert has been held since the very first year of the festival, and it is one of DeMerle’s and Eisele’s favorite performances. “These concerts are the most heartwarming experiences for us,” says DeMerle. “The connection that our

BROOKE RAULERSON NAMED 2016 FLORIDA STATE FLORAL ASSOCIATION DESIGNER OF THE YEAR
BROOKE IMAGES
Brooke Raulerson, owner and lead designer of Artistic Florist, competed in and won the Florida State Floral Association Designer of the Year competition on June 4, 2016. She placed first in all three categories for her bouquet, boutonniere, and centerpiece designs. Raulerson previously won this competition in 2010, and this year she beat out 13 other designers from the state of Florida to regain this prestigious title. “The competition took place at the Renaissance World Golf Village Resort in St. Augustine,” says Raulerson. “It was an honor to bring home the win in my own backyard!” Raulerson is considered Amelia Island’s foremost floral designer. Known as a prodigy in the floral industry, she has been recognized as an award-winning designer for 19 years. In 2005, she purchased the family flower shop, where she had been employed since 1996, and in less than a year transformed Artistic Florist into Amelia Island’s premier floral design studio. She is an accredited Florida State Master Designer and was inducted in the American Institute of Floral Designers in 2009. Artistic Florist specializes in floral art and European designs utilizing fresh flowers from around the world. For more information, visit www.artistic-florist.com or call (904) 261-5546.

n four years, Arlene Mirschel has turned her antiques and collectibles shop, Island Treasures, into a thriving, successful, and eclectic store. With her discriminating eye for design, and an inimitable understanding for what her customers are looking for, Arlene’s 8th Street store beckons visitors with unique plants and garden items outside her door. But inside, the shop is brimming with fine collectibles. Arlene has always had a flair for plants and gardening, and besides the furniture and memorabilia she sells in the shop, this young entrepreneur merges plants and collectibles to create unique and unusual garden displays, bird baths, concrete statues, fountains, and accessories. Arlene is continually surprised by the way she is able to bring collectibles and customers together. “If you’re looking for a very unusual item, we are bound to have it,” says Arlene. “We recently sold two old boat doors to two different customers. People often come in and say our inventory is amazing. I love the quality of old items, and so do my clients.” Island Treasures features some
vendor booths, along with Arlene’s own inventory, which includes an enormous library of used books, all carefully labeled for easy access, and one of the largest collections of vintage and autographed books in the area. Island Treasures now carries a selection of new books, as well. The shop is meticulously cared for and features thousands of treasures, from island furniture to children’s vintage toys, and even old nautical collectibles. “My husband John restores old boats,” says Arlene. “So we carry many maritime treasures.” John also works at the store with Arlene, which is always bustling with customers. Arlene maintains her Facebook page to help promote her newest items daily. She recently posted a quote by Cicero: “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” Indeed, Island Treasures is more than a store – it is an oasis on a busy street, where you can wander through the garden, browse in the library, pick up a special piece of furniture for your home, or find a gift for a friend. renda DeMarco moved to Fernandina Beach in 1992 when she and her husband were hired at The Palace Saloon. Seven years later, a fire nearly destroyed the historic tavern. As Brenda watched the fire with horror from Cody’s Fine Menswear across the street, she never dreamed it would lead to a life-changing career in retail. Cody’s offered her a job that very day, and eventually Brenda became the store manager. Cody’s was named for the owners’ dog, so when Brenda bought the store in 2004, she named it after her dog, Wadsworth. Originally a shop featuring fine menswear, Brenda added women’s clothing five years ago. “Wadsworth’s is everchanging and growing,” says Brenda. “It’s a store for locals and visitors alike. When I go to market, I act as a personal shopper for my customers. I know what they like, and we carry things that no one else carries.” Wadsworth features top brands like Over Under, Vineyard Vines, Johnny O, Tori Richards, Southern Tide, and many others, including their own line of “shrimp” clothing with a logo designed by Brenda’s daughter. Wadsworth’s recently introduced a line of home goods by Bourbon and Boots, featuring a selection of items that every Southern home needs. And Wadsworth’s offers military discounts every day. Located at 204 Centre Street, Wadsworth’s is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. For more information, call (904) 277-1162 or visit their Facebook page.

Rock Steady With a program designed to improve the quality of life of people with Parkinson’s disease, Rock Steady Boxing brings the fight to Amelia Island. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTOS BY TIFINI MCGILL
R
ock Steady Boxing, the first and only boxing program of its kind in the country, was founded in 2006 in Indianapolis, Indiana by Scott C. Newman, who is living with Parkinson’s disease. The seed for what would eventually become Rock Steady was planted when Newman began intense, one-on-one, boxing training just a few years after he was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s at the age of 40. Newman experienced dramatic improvement in his physical health, agility, and daily functioning through the intense and high energy workouts, and his quality of life improved dramatically in a short time due to his fighting back against Parkinson’s. Newman eventually opened a small gym and boxing ring in a donated corner of a corporate employee gym, which became Rock Steady’s first home. Today, there are 200 Rock Steady franchises across the country, including one right here on Amelia Island, brought to our community via the efforts of Guy Petty and Mary Anne
Sharer in April this year. “When Guy was diagnosed with Parkinson’s a year and a half ago, his brother sent him an article about Rock Steady,” says Mary Anne. “We knew immediately that we wanted to start a program here. We began networking with other Parkinson’s patients and we did a lot of research. We raised money and managed to get a training slot in Indianapolis for our coaches.” Locally, the Rock Steady Amelia Island program is held at Advanced Muscle Therapy and Fitness three times a week. 12 to 15 people attend the classes, along with volunteers called “corner men,” a boxing term for persons who provide assistance and advice to a boxer while he trains or fights. “The Rock Steady workout comes from a curriculum of the way boxers train,” says Guy. “It’s a workout that covers balance, coordination, strength, and even vocals. As symptoms occur, there are individual exercises that counteract each of these. Sometimes these symptoms can continued on page 48.

a
touch of companionship Offering friendship and comfort with a wagging tail, pet therapy programs bring furry friends to patients and seniors in need of connection. BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTOS BY SHERRY GARBARINI
T
here are all kinds of therapy. Pet therapy is an innovative approach that brings loving dogs and their owners to nursing homes, care facilities, assisted living communities, and hospitals across the country. Soft Touch, an Amelia Island pet therapy program, coordinates visits to Amelia Island’s care facilities. The newest pet therapy program coordinates visits to patients at Baptist Medical Center Nassau. Pet therapy, the visits of pets to hospitals and care facilities, has been growing across the country as people learn the simple joy that a soft furry friend can bring to a person in pain or lonely for attention and stimulation. Requirements vary. It is critical that animals are wellbehaved, not afraid of loud noises, don’t bark, nip or jump, and are up-to-date on all shots. Some programs, especially at hospitals, require dogs complete one of many available training programs and have more stringent requirements.
Soft Touch is a volunteer program that schedules Friday pet visits to care facilities on the island, as Quality Health, Nassau County Council on Aging, Savannah Grand, and Osprey Village. Many of the pet owners also volunteer at the Nassau Humane
Society, which has been supportive of the Soft Touch program from its earliest days. Many of the dogs who visit the local care facilities are rescues adopted through the Humane Society. Fridays are Soft Touch days. Fifteen volunteers spread out and visit one of the assisted living or care facilities on the island. A wide variety of dogs are in the program, including a Great Dane, King Charles Spaniels, a Cocker Spaniel, Golden Retrievers, Chihuahuas, a Yorkshire Terrier, and many mixed breeds. Some visits are to individual rooms for an intimate personal visit. Visits to Council on Aging brings together a circle of clients, visiting dogs, and their owners. “Our Soft Touch friends have been an amazing experience for our Adult Day Care seniors and staff,” says Deb Dombkowski, Adult Day Care Supervisor. “The power of connection of our seniors and visiting dogs bring smiles and love to all.” The most profound impact of the pet therapy program may be the visits to the memory care patients. A spark of emotion is often aroused by the dogs visiting. A hand on a soft coat of fur can bring a rare smile. The most challenging visits are to Quality Health, the island’s skilled nursing facility, where many of the residents are waiting out their days and are in fragile physical condition. As the dogs’ toe nails click on the continued on page 49.

Shedding light on a challenging process, Amelia Island resident Artie Lynnworth blogs about his experiences in treatment at Ackerman Cancer Center.

hen Amelia Island resident Artie Lynnworth was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009, it was almost a relief to him and his wife, Margy. His two brothers had been previously diagnosed with prostate cancer, and his father had died of the disease. Lynnworth knew it was just a matter of time before he too would receive his cancer diagnosis. “I had surgery, along with regular testing over several years,” says Lynnworth.
Margy & Artie Lynnworth
“However, when my PSA levels started rising again, the test results indicated that not all cancer cells had been cleared from my system.” He scheduled an 44 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • SEPTEMBER 2016
initial consultation at Ackerman Cancer Center on Amelia Island and is now undergoing Proton Therapy, a specialized form of radiation, at the private practice’s Jacksonville facility. “During those early stages of treatment I began sending emails to my family members, letting them know what was going on. I cc’d Dr. Ackerman on all the emails, and he suggested that I write a blog about my experience.” To Lynnworth, it all made perfect sense. He was already an accomplished writer, having published several books on resume writing, job interviewing, time management, effective communications, physical fitness, and more. He realized that his dedication to excellence and focus on service, which brought him success and satisfaction both on and off the job, would also help him with his fight against cancer. It would also help him connect with others who were going through the same experiences. “My blog has covered each one of my appointments, from the very first treatment, along with my experience with other patients who are sharing a path of uncertainty along with me,” says Lynnworth. “Daily caring and sharing with others, along with Margy’s support, has given me great appreciation for the process that other patients are going through.” He began his blog in mid-June of this year, and will continue through his last treatment, along with follow-ups as recommended by his doctor. are published every Wednesday on the Ackerman Cancer Center website, featuring subjects such as “How to Get Answers to Your Questions,” “About Modesty, Privacy, and Respect,” and “Tips for Friends.” During a 40-year career as an electrical engineer with a master’s degree in engineering administration, Lynnworth has held management positions from plant manager to senior vice president with businesses spanning the globe. A former gymnast and coach, private pilot, bluegrass banjo and classical guitar player, Lynnworth now spends his time pursuing his love of writing, photography, martial arts, exercising, teaching, and mentoring. He also conducts workshops, seminars, radio and TV talk shows, and donates his time as a guest lecturer at universities and community colleges. “It’s helpful for prospective patients to hear from other cancer patients and survivors when making their own cancer treatment decisions,” says Lauren DeWitt, oncology social worker at Ackerman Cancer Center. “We are grateful to Mr. Lynnworth for sharing his experiences with us.” “The blogging process is really changing my perspective on cancer treatment,” Lynnworth says. “It has given me something else to focus on, besides my diagnosis. It’s helped me make the best of the situation, and right now, I feel great.” To read the blog, visit www.ackermancancercenter.com/ blog/category/patient-experiences/. Foamy Bells

S
eptember always makes me think of fall and the changing colors of the foliage in New England and upstate New York. Shades of yellow, gold, orange, red, and rust adorn the trees and shrubs. Here in Florida, we plant flowers and shrubs so we can enjoy color year-round. Echinacea Supreme Elegance is a great new plant for color. This Coneflower has a striking deep rosy-red cone that enriches as the flower ages. The ray petals are star-like and bright mauvepink, which deepen in color. Supreme Elegance has a patent pending and is a wonderful addition to your formal border or cottage garden. They love the sun and only need water when it is extremely dry or as a new planting. These plants develop deep tap roots and are quite drought-tolerant when established. In spring, a couple of inches of organic matter around the plants will take care of their nutritional needs for the year. No further fertilization is needed. Echinaceas will bloom until October, but dead-heading in summer will help them continue blooming until

the first frost. Also, butterflies like this plant. Supreme Elegance makes a great cut flower and lasts well either cut or dried. It is easy to grow and troublefree. Supreme Elegance is also suitable for Bonsai. I have received many requests for information on Plumerias. We can grow them here, but they must be protected in the winter. If they are in a pot, take them into the garage. Do not place them on concrete, as concrete transfers cold; instead, set the pot on a piece of wood. You can dig up the smaller trees, wrap the roots in newspaper, and move them to the garage or another enclosed place, and then replant in the spring. Remember: the Plumeria does not die in the fall. It simply sheds its leaves and goes dormant.

A new patent pending ground cover or hanging basket plant is the Copper Cascade (a new x Heucherella). Its common name is Foamy Bells, and it grows 6 to 8 in. tall. It likes full or part shade and blooms in June and July. This small-leaved beauty overflows containers with mounds of trailing foliage in shades of warm copper blushed rose. It works equally well as a ground cover, sending out stems that weave their way through its neighbors. Panicles of creamy white blooms appear in midsummer, and the lovely foliage holds its color all year. Foamy Bells have lobed leaves and tiny, bell-shaped flowers, which appear to float from the ground on wand-like stems. The bells appear in shades of pink, red, white, and purple. The flowers are loved by hummingbirds and are great in arrangements. Cut off the old growth after flowering in late summer to expose fresh foliage. Be sure to remove dead leaves over the growing season to keep the lovely foliage looking vibrant. If you have any questions, you can email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

Many of our Parkinson’s patients claim that they are getting better, and doing more than they ever thought they could do.” Boxing works by moving the boxer’s body though all planes of motion while continuously changing the routine as he or she progresses through the workout. These classes have proven that anyone, at any level of Parkinson’s, can actually lessen their symptoms and lead a healthier and happier life, and Rock Steady classes are divided into different levels based upon each person’s unique Parkinson’s symptoms and overall level of fitness. “There’s a phenomenon that happens with boxing,” says Guy. “It instills confidence, and makes patients feel that they’re actually ‘fighting’ their illness, because in reality, they are. There are three keys to success in fighting Parkinson’s disease: taking your medication as prescribed, drinking lots of water, and getting physical exercise.” “Parkinson’s Disease is becoming more prevalent as people live longer,” Guy notes. “ It used to be hard to connect with others who have the disease. And because it’s considered a ‘shrinking disease,’ many patients begin to withdraw from their families and friends. Rock Steady is changing that. Someday we hope to see a Rock Steady gym in every town.” For more information, visit www. rocksteady.org. To inquire about local classes, call (904) 491-4980. t was October 2013 when Beckie Barnes sensed the first cool Chicago breeze of the season and saw the colored leaves begin floating to the ground. “I came home and told Donnie that I didn’t want to spend another winter in Chicago.” “Let’s move,” replied Donnie Brown. It was one of those “a-ha” moments in life when Beckie realized she really could move, and they would start a new adventure together. “My parents moved to Savannah, and our other loved ones left the cold for the southeast, as well,” says Beckie. “The more we talked about it, we decided we would, too!” The couple planned on relocating to Charleston, but after a reconnaissance visit to Jacksonville to confirm their decision, Beckie and Donnie found Amelia Island. “We’d never even heard of Amelia when our realtor brought us to the island on the last day of our northeast

Everyone is so nice and friendly.” The couple still laughs about a morning Donnie was walking to get a cup of coffee and he kept seeing people wave. It took him a minute to figure out that they didn’t want anything; it was just Amelia Island neighborliness. The home they found was brandnew, a blank slate. Beckie knew she needed assistance to make it beautiful, and that is when she visited Robyn Branch Design. Today, the fourbedroom, three-bath home is just what the couple wanted. Leddy’s Porch AT THE FLORIDA HOUSE INN Serving traditional Southern comfort food, the Florida House Inn offers mouth-watering favorites like Slow-Smoked Pulled Pork and Chicken and Waffles. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
T
he Florida House Inn was built in 1857 by David Yulee as a railroad boarding house for his workers. The Inn also housed Union soldiers during the Civil War. It was later purchased by Major Leddy and his wife. Today, Leddy’s Porch serves southern-style comfort food created in a simple fashion using fresh ingredients, and it’s a favorite of locals and visitors alike. I invited my friend Cindy to join me one afternoon for lunch at Leddy’s Porch, and we were eager to enjoy Chef Matthew Kennedy’s Southern specialties. Every great Southern meal should start out with iced tea, and Leddy’s Porch does something very unique to flavor their teas—they use homemade jam! You can order your tea the traditional way, but Cindy and I wanted to try their raspberry and peach teas. They were quite delicious, refreshing, and not too sweet, with a subtle fruity flavor. We decided to order a starter to share, and my absolute favorite Southern dish is Fried Green Tomatoes. The Florida House knows how to cook them right—super crispy, and served over a bed of field greens with herb buttermilk dressing. Chef Matthew prides himself on making all their dressings and sauces from scratch, and his buttermilk dressing was delicious! Chef Matt also brought us a plate of Pimento Cheese and Lavosh, a type of cracker bread. I love pimento cheese and was thrilled to find out that Chef Matthew roasts his own peppers to make this dish. The pimento flavor was robust, the pimento cheese creamy and piquant. Cindy and I then ordered two entrees to share, both among the Florida House’s most popular dishes: Slow-Smoked Pulled Pork Sandwich, and Fried Chicken and Waffles. Chef Matthew smokes the pork on-site, and it was amazing—moist and tender – and served on a fresh roll with southern mustard sauce, homemade pickles, plus pickled okra and pickled onions. There were also several pieces of watermelon on the plate. What could be more Southern than that? We both loved the Chicken and Waffles, which has been an old-fashioned Southern dish for many years, but did you know that the dish actually originated in Harlem, New York,
in the 1930s? No matter who claims the birth right for Chicken and Waffles, the Florida House prepares the dish perfectly, using real, homemade fried chicken breast, served with huge, Belgian waffles, pure maple syrup, lots of butter, and a mound of fresh strawberries and blueberries. Simply divine!
The Florida House is open for lunch Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and for brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Their most popular brunch item is Shrimp and Grits, made with local shrimp, a must-have for a perfect weekend. The Inn provides catering for up to 250 guests and more, including weddings, family reunions, and other special events. The courtyard and gardens are adaptable to many different seating situations and layouts, in true Southern charm, and Inn is located in the heart of the Historic District. ver the years, I’ve spent so much time at Fort Clinch State Park that one day Fort Historian Frank Ofeldt suggested that I join the ranks of the fort’s Civil War reenacting groups. On the first weekend of each month, Fort Clinch holds a Union Garrison and invites reenactors from all over the state to come and join the fun. I decided to take the plunge. On my weekend, I was assigned to the 12th New Jersey Volunteers, Company F, of the 4th Brigade District of Florida’s 1st Battalion. The 12th New Jersey was formed in 1862 when President Lincoln called for an additional 300,000 men for the Union Army. The 12th New Jersey historic interpreters were a
group of lively soldiers eager to take me under their wings and show me what the life of a reenactor is all about. Reenacting the American Civil War is not for the faint at heart. Reenactors like the 12th New Jersey strive to accurately portray the common Union soldier during the time of the Civil War, dressing in period clothing and carrying muskets, ammunition, canteens, and the like. Throughout the weekend, I witnessed their knowledge and commitment to history as they answered questions from people visiting the fort. That night, I listened to stories of famous battles, Civil War trivia,
and tales of the emotional struggles endured by young soldiers far from home. A few months after my weekend with the reenactors, Frank suggested another Fort Clinch evening adventure: to sleep alone under the full moon on top of the fort itself. He said it’s a great way to experience the fort at night. Frank had explained to me the significance of the full moon to the soldiers staying at Fort Clinch during the Civil War. The alignment of these familiar heavenly bodies brought a measure of harmony into their lives during a time of great strife. On June 20, the summer solstice, a few hours after the Visitor Center had closed, I was alone in the fort with the sun setting on the west side of the cannons, while the moon was rising in the east. What a sight to behold! I had set my sleeping bag on the topside of the fort, where I could lie on my back and watch the “strawberry” moon move her sunlit face across the sky throughout the night. When I awoke before dawn, I was able to watch the sun rise in the east while the moon was setting in the west. I still can’t get enough of Fort Clinch at night, and I highly recommend their Candlelight Tours, held the first Saturday of each month during the Fort’s Union Garrison Weekend. Shortly after sunset, participants gather in the Visitor Center to receive a short orientation before their tour. Visiting a real Civil War fort circa 1864 means no flashlights, no cell phones, and no electric lights. The group heads to the fort to meet with a historic interpreter, a Union soldier, who tells visitors about his everyday life at the fort during the Civil War. Six to eight rooms are lit with candles, and the soldier demonstrates where he eats, sleeps, and keeps watch. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, and the tour lasts about an hour or more. Candlelight Tours are $3 per person, plus park admission.
