The arrival of Labor Day is always bittersweet since it signals the official end of the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. When the temperatures begin to cool (at least a little), we soon pack away the happy memories of summer vacation and begin to reacquaint ourselves with school schedules and all of our regular routines. As thoughts of relaxation slowly fade, we settle back into the responsibilities that make up the rest of our lives. But fortunately, autumn on Amelia Island also means the return of the Amelia Island Jazz Festival, and that is always—like jazz music itself—a breath of fresh air blowing through the island. The Amelia Island Jazz Festival, returning this fall for its fifteenth season, owes its success to renowned drummer Les DeMerle, artistic director and founder of the festival. An Amelia Island resident since 1991 with his wife, vocalist Bonnie Eisele, Les got his start drumming with jazz greats Lionel Hampton and Harry James, and has worked with musical icons like Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, and Joe Williams. Les and Bonnie are backed by a hard-working group of volunteers who help make the jazz festival an unforgettable event each year. The festival runs this year from October 7 – 14 and welcomes another outstanding line-up of world-class musicians, including headliners jazz guitarist/vocalist Henry Johnson and the dynamic Brazilian jazz project Requinte Trio, to venues throughout the island. As always, the festival features a full week of shows and events, kicking off with the annual free Sunday concert in Amelia Park, then continuing through the week with a special Jazz and Wine Tasting Event at Amelia Island Wine Company, a “Jump, Jive & Wail” swing concert and dance party with the Dynamic Les DeMerle band featuring Bonnie Eisele at the Sandbar & Kitchen, and Hot Latin Jazz in its traditional Thursday night slot with El Niño & the Latin Jazz Knights, also at Sandbar & Kitchen. Additionally, the fun Late Night Jams return after the headliner performances Friday and Saturday nights at Sliders Seaside Grill, as well as the delicious Sunday Jazz Brunch at Horizons Restaurant. It promises to be a great week of music. Also in this issue, we take a look at Kenya Partners, a non-profit organization headed by Amelia Island resident Diane Hamrick dedicated to improving medical care and education in Kenya; we meet long-time realtor Anita Cooper, who recently celebrated her 80th birthday, and her daughter, local entrepreneur Lori Lecker; get to know Melody Dawkins, the Membership Director at the Nassau County Council on Aging; enjoy a “Backyard Adventure” boat cruise and picnic on Cumberland Island; and much more.

T’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THE AMELIA ISLAND JAZZ FESTIVAL IS CELEBRATING ITS 15TH YEAR OF BRINGING WORLD-CLASS JAZZ TO AMELIA ISLAND! SEEMS LIKE JUST YESTERDAY THE LIKES OF

David Sanborn, Ramsey Lewis, David Benoit, Spyro Gyra, Larry Coryell, Randy Brecker, and Richie Cole were “bringing down the house” in venues throughout the island. In just 15 years, the AIJF has brought thousands of jazz-lovers and jazz musicians together to form partnerships and friendships, benefitting from the vision and energy of a veteran jazz professional who gives the Festival a rich heritage – legendary drummer and Artistic Director Les DeMerle. DeMerle and his wife and vocalist, Bonnie Eisele, had a longtime dream of creating a diversified jazz festival on Amelia Island. The couple produced the festival for three years prior to its incorporation as a non-profit 501(c)3 tax exempt organization. Since then, with the help of generous sponsors 11 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

and hardworking volunteers, the Amelia Island Jazz Festival has grown into a spectacular event which attracts major jazz artists and attendees from across the country. DeMerle toured for 12 years with jazz trumpet master Harry James and recorded three albums with him, including the Grammy Award-winning King James Version. DeMerle’s own jazz/rock/fusion band, Transfusion, recorded five awardwinning LPs. He has toured with the Manhattan Transfer and appeared with such musical greats as Lou Rawls, Sammy Davis, Jr., Frank Sinatra, Mel Tormé, and Joe Williams. Eisele has appeared at many popular jazz clubs, including Somerset’s in Singapore, City Jazz in Orlando, The Jazz Corner in Hilton Head, and Arturo Sandoval’s in Miami. She has

also toured the U.S. and Europe with the Chicago Free Street Theater, an original musical theater and dance group. Eisele’s diverse performing experience includes singing at the Chicago Playboy Club, Chicago Fest, Drury Lane Theater, and Miami’s Fontainebleau Resort. Eisele and DeMerle perform many styles of jazz ranging from swing and standard ballads, blues, Latin, rhythm and blues, Cajun grooves, Broadway show favorites, and more, performing in various sizes ranging from a trio to a full seventeen-piece big band.

AMELIA ISLAND JAZZ FESTIVAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS The cornerstone of the Amelia Island Jazz Festival is its educational programs; led by DeMerle, the Festival seeks to enrich minds with the sounds, excitement and vitality of jazz. “Jazz in the Schools” was designed to expose young people to the art of jazz, while motivating students to pursue jazz as a musical endeavor. Featuring workshops led by master musicians for grade school, middle school, and high school students, more than 2,000 area students attend this program each year. Each 12 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

year, since 2009, the Festival’s educational programs culminate in the Amelia Island Jazz Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded on an annual basis to a graduating high school senior. The scholarship is used toward college expenses necessary to earn a major or minor in music in the area of jazz performance or a related area. It is the desire of the Jazz Festival board to help preserve jazz, the all-American art form, by helping young, talented artists who are pursuing their dream of becoming jazz musicians. This year’s winner, saxophonist David Truilo, will be performing at the Festival in October. Truilo was a member of the Stanford Jazz Institute in 2017, where he learned from luminaries such as Ravi Coltrane, Anat Cohen, and Kendrick Scott. He was also one of a select group of musicians selected for Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Summer Jazz Academy in 2018. For his undergraduate degree, David is attending The New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. In addition, DeMerle, Eisele, and special guests perform a special Jazz for Seniors concert at Savannah Grand of Amelia Island. DeMerle also holds a drum camp for children during

On Tuesday, October 9 from 6 to 8 p.m., Amelia Island Wine Company, 4924 First Coast Highway, is hosting a special Jazz and Wine Tasting event featuring six unique wines with a pairing of jazz for each taste. The performance presents multiinstrumentalist Dr. Bill Prince, trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, and flute, with Doug Matthews, piano, and Les DeMerle, drums. Prince, a professor emeritus at the University of North Florida, has performed with numerous bands and orchestras, including Buddy Rich, Billy Maxted, Pee Wee Hunt, the NORAD Band, the Denver, Ft. Lauderdale, Palm Beach, and Jacksonville Symphonies, and the American Wind Symphony Orchestra. Matthews has performed with Louie Bellson, Randy Brecker, Dizzy Gillespie, Branford Marsalis, James Moody, Percy Sledge, and the Dynamic Les DeMerle Big Band. He is an active composer and arranger, and several of his compositions and arrangements have been recorded by various artists.

ARIAS IS LOOKING FOR ZOO KEEPERS!

TURNING MEMORIES INTO MEMOIRS Each Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. during the month of October, the Amelia Plantation Chapel will be hosting a seminar entitled, “We’ve Got Stories To Tell: Turning Memories Into Memoirs.” Hosted by Bill Hilles, the program will help attendees turn their personal memories into memoirs to be shared with others in the seminar. Serving as overall coordinator, Hilles will teach four memoir-writing lessons over the month-long course. Chapel member and local writer Dickie Anderson will lead off and set the tone for the first seminar on October 6, reading one of her From the Porch stories. Several guests from a previous workshop will share their own memoirs. “As we get older, memories often slip away, often because we don’t record them for later generations eager to know what life was like for their grandparents or great-grandparents,” says Hilles. “This program should help to remedy that oversight.” The seminar will be conducted in the Chapel’s Fellowship Hall, located at 36 Bowman Road. It’s free and open to the public and there’s no need to register in advance, but Hilles suggests that persons interested in attending call the Chapel office at (904) 277-4414 to verify their intent and request more information.

Amelia Island Residents in Action for the Symphony (ARIAS) sponsors a program each January and February that visits all fourth grade classes in Nassau County with 40 orchestral instruments. To be able to reach all Nassau County students, ARIAS needs volunteer “zookeepers,” and no experience is required! The mission of ARIAS is to bring the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra to Amelia Island, encourage Nassau residents to attend symphony concerts, and provide music education to children in Nassau County schools through Jacksonville Symphony performances and its Instrument Zoo. ARIAS also sponsors a music scholarship program and hosts an annual “Let Freedom Ring” Memorial Day weekend concert, as well as Amelia Nights at the Symphony, which include dinner, transportation, and concert. ARIAS’s education programs continue to be very successful. Hundreds of Nassau County students experience various ensembles of JSO musicians in their schools. The ARIAS Instrument Zoo has been enthusiastically received by numerous fourth grade elementary school students, and its outreach also includes scholarships for students at the Amelia Arts Academy. BARTRAM GARDEN CLUB ANNOUNCES FALL MEETINGS The Bartram Garden Club announces its upcoming programs for September and October, with meetings on the second Thursday of each month at the GFWC Woman’s Club of Fernandina, 201 Jean Lafitte Boulevard. The September 13 program features “Water Gardening” with James Loper of Reflections of Nature, which includes various aspects of aquatic gardening with plants, along with planting in and around retention ponds. Hospitality begins at 10 a.m., with the program beginning at 10:30 a.m. The October 11 meeting is a special presentation with author, artist, and park advocate Kathy Stark, speaking on “The Wilderness of North Florida’s Parks.” She offers a unique exploration of natural parks in North Florida with her traveling exhibit and book. Stark combines her expansive watercolor paintings with sketches, historical facts, and maps to create an exhibit that is a unique blend of art and education, serving as a tribute and guide to the great unspoiled stretches of our region. The exhibit and book are an outgrowth of Stark’s personal passion for the outdoors. Her project is sponsored by Merrill Lynch and in partnership with the Timucuan Parks Foundation. rt on Centre recently celebrated its third anniversary on Amelia Island and it is continuing to expand its business, now representing over 35 North American artists including several from the local area. “We appreciate all of the support which we have received since we opened three years ago, and we are looking forward to many years to come,” says Jim Lawrence. “We work hard to create partnerships with artists, who represent a diversity of styles, mediums, and price points, and we are continually searching for work that will resonate with all of our clients, both local and tourist.” Jim and Kara Lawrence started the gallery with long-time friends Philip and Debbie Lehman after being parttime residents of the island for over ten years. Both couples had a passion for art, and had developed strong, personal relationships with many artists over the years. After working in corporate America and private business, the four friends decided to make the transition to Fernandina Beach permanently and open up a gallery in the historic district. “We are supported by a wonderful manager, Courtney McCranie,” says

Jim. “Courtney has deep roots in the community and she has a passion for people and art. Marcella was born and raised in Jacksonville, and she felt called to the legal profession in high school. After 12 years working as a paralegal in Elder Law, she decided to pursue her career at Florida Coastal School of Law. the country, along with its people. But serious problems of poor healthcare and lack of education hit her hard. “Children were dying from ordinary diseases like measles,” said Hamrick. “One in five children died before the age of five, women were dying in childbirth, and few children had the opportunity to pursue education to the high school level. Many could not even attend primary school because they didn’t have the required uniforms and shoes.” When Hamrick and her friends left Kenya, they committed to raising support to purchase property for a small clinic and to returning the following year with a team of medical professionals, and Kenya Partners was born. Today, Kenya Partners is a 501(c) (3) non-profit that is managed and solely operated by volunteers from all over the country, including many Amelia Island residents. Volunteers pay their own travel expenses and 100 percent of funds raised go directly to the programs in Kenya through the Kenyan NGO, of which Hamrick is chairperson. Some volunteers spend as long as two months in Kenya; Hamrick herself spends at least five months per year. Kenya Partners’ programs were expanded in 2007 to address the global orphan crisis by giving orphans and vulnerable children the opportunity for a quality education, a path out of a life of poverty. Betty Mavity Roberts UM Mission School, serving children in grades K-12, was constructed on ten acres of rural land outside Nakuru in the village of Lanet. It opened in 2009 and now houses over 700 students from all over the country. In 2008 and 2009, because of its commitment to education and the overwhelming support of its donors, Kenya Partners was able to construct two more preschool centers serving children ages 3 to 5 years of age. One center is located in a slum known as

“Squatters Hill,” and the other center, named “Mercy Kids PreSchool,” is located in a rural area near the clinic. Both centers have feeding programs for its students, and the staff at Squatters Hill also provides a nutritious lunch of rice and beans to other children in the community. One of the sustainability measures in place to support the organization’s work is Wenza Safaris, a tour company of which Hamrick is the managing director. The company offers safaris in Kenya, including at the game park at Lake Nakuru National Park, the Masai Mara, Ambosele, Samburu, and others. “Our tagline is ‘Travel with a Purpose,’” says Hamrick. “All funds raised from Wenza Safaris support the Kenya Partners programs. In addition, in Kenya, over 150 local people are employed by Kenya Partners, an economic boon to their community.” On September 23, Kenya Partners is holding its annual “Giving Hope Benefit Dinner” at Walkers Landing in the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort at 5 p.m. The vent includes a plated surf-and-turf dinner from Horizons Restaurant, plus wine and beer, live music by Eastbound, and a silent auction 34 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

entitled “Bid for Hope,” which presents various needs for the guests to bid on such as school uniforms, chickens and cows, medical equipment, and the like. Donations for the silent auction are also needed. Kenya Partners has been one of the mission emphases at Memorial United Methodist Church for the last six years. like mother, like daughter Having just celebrated her 80th birthday, Anita Cooper shows few signs of slowing down, and daughter Lori Lecker credits her mother’s example and support for much of her own success. BY KAREN MILLER

W

hen Anita Cooper was a little girl, she liked to draw floor plans for houses. Little did she know she would grow up to become one of the top realtors in Northeast Florida. When her daughter Lori was a little girl, she liked to pretend her bedroom was a retail clothing store. Little did she know she would grow up to be one of the top fashion merchandisers in the Southeast. “I guess the acorn doesn’t fall too far from the tree,” says Anita, who claims her work ethic is the key to her success. “I passed that work ethic onto my daughter. The two of us have always supported one another in business and in our personal lives.” Lori Lecker and her husband John presently own five retail stores: lori+lulu, Pearl, and JJ Cooper here on Amelia Island, and 2-more lori+lulu stores located in Raleigh and Charleston. A sixth store is in the works, Isola Home, due to open in October at 303 South 8th Street. “I wouldn’t have the stores if it wasn’t for my mother,” says Lori, who began her foray into fashion merchandising with United Colors of Benetton, when she took a group of failing stores and turned them into the most successful Benetton stores in the country. “Right after my father died, my mother helped me acquire my own Benetton stores. She really believed in me.”

The family had close ties to Fernandina Beach, having spent their summer vacations on Amelia Island for many years. Lori and John finally decided to move to Fernandina full time, opening their first concept store, lori+lulu in 2012. “When I saw how much my mother had accomplished, I knew that I could do anything I set my mind to,” says Lori. “My mother was only 54 when my father died. She didn’t have a lot of money—she rose to the top of the ladder in real estate entirely on her own. She’s still selling houses today, at 80 years old.” Anita recently celebrated her 80th trip around the sun with a large birthday party at Lori’s house, surrounded by friends and clients she has acquired throughout her life and career. “I’m in awe of my mother,” says Lori. “She has made so many friends, many of them are also her customers. My mother is so real, so honest, and such a hard worker, and she has a big heart. That’s what people love about her. Never have I met someone with so much integrity.” One of the things the mother/daughter team has learned throughout their successful careers is the ability to let things go, and be joyful in all that they do. “This is something that comes with maturity, I think,” says Lori. “It used to be I couldn’t sleep at night with all the worries about the stores

and the businesses—but both my mother and I agree that you have to accept that some things are just out of your control. You do the best you can, you go to work every day, and take each challenge as it is presented.” Anita would like to retire from real estate, but it’s nearly impossible as her friends and referrals keep coming to her to buy and sell their homes. “I just can’t stop selling!” laughs Anita. “But I’m not working as much as I used to. I love to play bridge, and mah jongg, and I really love to travel. I’m selling my own place right now. I’m hoping to downsize a bit, and make some changes.” Lori rarely thinks about retiring, even after after 30 years spent operating retail brick and mortar clothing stores. “John and I will probably look to build some infrastructure internally and release that to someone else,” she says. “My newfound passion is developing new retail concepts from start to finish —I especially love designing the logo and the store interior and fixtures. Then we go to the markets and buy for the genre of clientele we target. If I don't start a marketing company and do it for someone else, I may have to open six more concepts I have in my head! It’s very fulfilling to see them come to fruition and as an added bonus, succeed.”

M

elody Dawkins has found her dream home and dream job. She is the Membership Director at the Nassau County Council on Aging (NCCOA). Her energy is contagious as she shares the many plans she has for the agency’s expanded new space. Melody moved to Amelia Island in 2003. With characteristic enthusiasm, she shares her story about finding Amelia Island. While working for Delta Air Lines in Washington, D.C., she lost both a mother and sister in a short period of time, and her father retired to St. Augustine. Wanting to be closer to him, she applied with around 150 others applicants when a job promotion came open at Jacksonville International Airport. As the applicant list narrowed, she and her husband decided to begin looking for housing in the Jacksonville area. Like so many, one visit to Amelia Island and it was love at first sight. She describes many things that led the couple to buy a house on the island. The first thing that impressed her were the welcoming residents of this community. She also felt a connection to her mother after seeing the sign for Barbara Jean’s Restaurant. Her mother’s name was Barbara Jean. Melody and her husband, Maurice, found the house they wanted and bought it on the spot. Family responsibilities for grandparents gave Melody the opportunity to experience many of the challenges senior citizens face. She found the perfect living arrangements for her grandmother at Quality Health and for her grandfather a block away in an apartment, with Baptist Nassau between them. She was able to find good living arrangements for both thanks to a caring community. Melody took an early retirement package with Delta Air Lines, and her dream job materialized when the Council on Aging created the position of Membership Director last year. With their move to 1901 Island Walkways, the agency will grow from 7,500 square feet to more than 25,000 square feet. Part of NCCOA’s planned growth is to create membership opportunities with a wide variety of classes and programs. 49 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Many classes are already scheduled, including gardening, exercise programs, and mémoir writing. She also is the editor of NCCOA’s Senior Life quarterly magazine. Melody and Maurice have two sons, Matthew and Miles. Her household includes a rescue cat, Tubs, and a rescue puppy named Lilly. Her husband’s African Grey, Lexi, rounds out the family. Maurice and Matthew started a local business, M&M Pick-Up and Delivery, which has rapidly grown from local deliveries to include intra-state moving. Already making a difference, Melody has increased program attendance 40 percent with programs such as karaoke, chair yoga, music, art, and monthly lunch outings, in addition to the popular bingo. She is quick to say that the varied offerings are possible only through the dedication of the many volunteers involved. Volunteers deliver Meals On Wheels, make minor home repairs, teach classes, assist with field trips, bring therapy dogs, and so much more. She shares a favorite quote from Maya Angelou: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Melody Dawkins makes a difference every day in the lives of the seniors in our community. aesthetic agastache A heat-tolerant perennial with dense spikes of flowers, Agastache Blue Fortune, or Hummingbird Mint, is perfect for sunny locations with well-drained soil. BY BETTY MORRELL

T

he annual Florida Growers trade show is coming up again, and I’m looking forward to hunting for new plants, discovering gardening hints, and looking for new ways to help home gardeners grow a successful garden! In the meantime, I came across an interesting, picturesque garden that showed off a mass of soft blue flower spikes, which appeared to be magnets for butterflies. This plant is Agastache Blue Fortune; its common name is Hummingbird Mint. Blue Fortune can grow 3 to 4 feet in height in full sun, with flowers appearing in July and lasting throughout the summer. They have a long blooming season, as they happily shrug off the summer heat and early frost. In early spring, cut back old stems, divide large clumps, and fertilize with a 10-10-10 fertilizer. When planting, space them about 15 inches apart. These pretty, fragrant flowers make a wonderful addition to any bouquet, giving it contrast or just adding color. A new Hummingbird Mint called Morello has arrived. It grows 24 to 30 inches high and 18 to 24 inches in width.

TIP OF T HE M O N T H Put Vietnamese Gardenia in a pot that can be brought into the house and placed in a sunny spot, where it will be protected during the winter.

The large, dense spikes of rich purplishpink tubular flowers are produced from spring through fall on this multiple award-winning perennial. Morello was selected for its sturdy, upright habit and exceptional vigor. This Agastache is a pollinator magnet, well suited to the garden, landscape, or container, attracting hummingbirds, butterflies, and large bees. I love all plants and flowers, and I have some favorites, but one plant I have loved for many years is the Gardenia. They are the flowers in corsages for proms, graduations, dates, and all other occasions, and they have a fragrance that is unforgettable. Vietnamese Gardenia is one I recently discovered. It has a strongly fragrant 3-inch creamy white single flower that stands out against its deep

green glossy foliage. This vigorous evergreen shrub is much easier to grow than many other gardenias, as it is more tolerant of overly moist soils, as well as drought. Once established, it has a high resistance to many pests. Gardenias do best in fertile, welldrained soil, rich in humus and acidity, with average moisture. They seem to perform well when they get some midday or afternoon shade, but good light is best for flower production. My large Gardenia was planted next to the garage in the front of the house, where it got shade all day, but lots of light. Growing partially under a huge tree, it was protected from the cold. When we had hard freezes, it took two king-sized sheets to cover it! It was huge and filled with flowers. Gardenias attract hummingbird moths with their fragrant and easy-to-spot white flowers. They are the most fragrant near sunset and during the early evening hours, making them obvious choices for Moon Moth gardens and containers. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. A

melia Park has a charm that is unique on our beautiful island. The narrow, connected streets, walking trails, canopy of trees, inter-generational mix of residents, the community park and playground space beside the mailboxes, the charming homes, its proximity to the grocery and the gym—what more could you want? It was just that appeal that hooked Gaylen and Tom Camera four years ago. “We were living in the Washington, D.C. area and we visited our son, who was working at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. When we found Amelia Park, we fell in love with the community.” The couple wasn’t quite ready to relocate, with Gaylen thriving as a realtor in her market and Tom working in sales and marketing outfitting professional sports teams with athletic apparel. “So we bought our lot and spent two years planning,” smiles Gaylen. 55 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Tom was quick to welcome me to “Gaylen’s House.” “He let me live my dream in designing, building, and now living in our beautiful new home,” says Gaylen. The work started with local architect John Dodd, whom she chose because he designed by computer, allowing the team to make adjustments and see what it would look like in real time. The floor plan overflows with custom features. The Cameras partnered with Call Construction and builder Brent Rewa, and the result is stunning: a 3,200 square foot home with four bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths that is as charming as the neighborhood. “Brent is an amazing listener,” says Gaylen. “He paid attention to every detail and made suggestions for the best end result. The partnership and communication were great, with a Monday morning meeting each week to follow the progress. And the best part is that he uses all local talent – from Johnny’s

I run into these folks around town and feel such a personal connection.” Highlights of the project include a Southern Livingstyle porch, free of railings, to welcome guests under its arches for a visit. The interior echoes the exterior, with arches in the doorways and a kitchen beautifully outfitted by Highland Cabinets. “We worked with John and Brent to ensure we had everything we needed on the first floor,” Gaylen explains. “We plan to age here and designed the home to accommodate us with ample doorway width and flat shower-entry, to allow for our future needs.” And the home has ample outdoor living space, with a comfortable patio with VIP Pavers, slider doors to 56 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

The Cameras love the Amelia Park community and Amelia Island, and they have both jumped right in. Tom, passionate about sports, kids, and baseball, is on the board of the Babe Ruth Baseball League, while Gaylen is a local realtor who is involved with the Amelia Island Book Festival and the Amelia Island Museum of History. O

n a recent summer evening, I had the opportunity to share some time with one of my favorite people over a fabulous meal. My youngest daughter, Lydia McIntosh, loves to dine out. She enjoys the special attention afforded well-behaved youngsters, as well as being out on the town. This night, our destination did not disappoint. Cucina South is located on A1A in the Palmetto Walk Shopping Village. Walking into the restaurant is a comforting experience, like entering the home of a friend, one who has a beautiful pizza oven in their living room. Warm and inviting, the oven fires out some incredible pizzas, but to my surprise, my date was feeling adventurous. We were seated upstairs at a table with a window and greeted warmly by our server, Jenn, who delivered some of Cucina South’s delicious bread with olive and red pepper tapenade, which is packed with big, sharp flavor. Lydia chose to start with a Shirley Temple and I, already eyeballing the scallops, chose a glass of Attems Pinot Grigio from Venezia Giulia, Italy and an order of mussels. I love mussels, and while I tried to make Lydia understand how delicious they were, her adventurousness stopped short of shellfish. The mussels are sautéed with shallots and garlic and deglazed with Sambuca, which gave the broth a lovely sweetness that complemented the delicate flavor of the mussels. We decided to share a salad, enjoying the butter lettuce tossed in a champagne vinaigrette with Parma ham, aged cheddar cheese, and walnuts. The vinaigrette was the perfect accent to the subtle flavor of the butter lettuce, and the Parma ham and aged cheddar got Lydia’s attention. For dinner, I was surprised when Lydia opted for the Chicken Picatta over the pepperoni pizza. (She reminded me that she had eaten pizza just other day.) Served over fettuccine, the sauce is light and tangy with lots of fresh lemon, and the chicken was perfectly tender and full of flavor. I decided on 62 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

the scallops. How could I resist? Risotto is one of my favorite things, and scented with the rich smokiness of bacon, it was a sure hit. The scallops came perfectly seared; crisp yet still a little opaque in the center, perfect. As it turned out, the Attems Pinot Grigio was the unerring choice, juicy with hints of citrus and strawberry, making everything on the table even better. When dessert was offered, the trouble began. Neither of us was sure which cherry to put on top of this splendid evening. Lydia was drawn to the bread pudding, but she really

had the chocolate gelato on her mind. Our server Jenn said it wouldn’t be a problem to have a couple of small scoops by themselves, and that sealed the deal. I chose to to stay with the chocolate but opted for the mousse. We traded bites, and while I always love gelato, I was very happy with the light and deceptively rich mousse. f you’re lucky enough to have friends with a boat, you’re lucky enough, especially if they invite you to go on a sunset cruise to Cumberland Island! Recently Doug and Jane Bailey invited me and my husband, Troy, to take a late-day trip to one of most beautiful undeveloped islands on the East Coast, and it’s just a stone’s throw away from our own island paradise. Cumberland Island is rich in history, architecture, and natural areas. Where the eastern edge of Cumberland is bounded by the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean, the north, west, and south are bounded by rivers, sounds, and marshes. Visitors to Cumberland Island can enjoy hiking, biking, birding, camping, swimming, and wildlife viewing, and Greyfield Inn, Cumberland’s only commercial establishment, which offers comfortable rooms, cottages, and dining. There are two public dock accesses at Cumberland: one at Sea Camp, and the other at Plum Orchard. Docking is on a first-come, first-served basis, so visiting late in the day is a great time to get a spot at the dock. We arrived at the Sea Camp dock around 5:30 p.m., and we were the only ones there! Our plan was to take a hike to the Dungeness ruins, the former mansion owned by the Carnegie family from the 1880s until 1925. In 1959, Dungeness was destroyed by fire, and today the ruins are preserved by the National Park Service as part of Cumberland Island National Seashore. It’s a one-and-a-half mile walk to Dungeness from the dock along a rustic trail, which leads to a dirt road lined with 300-yearold live oak trees draped with Spanish moss. As we hiked, our shadows grew long in the evening’s radiance. When we arrived at the main house, we were greeted by scores of Cumberland’s famous wild horses. Family units in groups scattered across the compound, which includes servant’s quarters, utility buildings, laundries, cisterns, and a variety of other structures. The light is beautiful that time of the day, and we paused to take photos and drink in the beauty of this magical place. We spotted more wildlife as we toured the grounds – deer, turkey, osprey, and even a pair of bobcats! We took a different route back to the dock, along a dirt road that leads to the ranger station, which was closed at that hour. The sun was beginning to set, so we dug into our picnic basket for shrimp ceviche, crab cakes, and iced tea, before getting on the boat and heading back to the Amelia Island Marina. Speaking of the Marina, if you can’t find any friends with a boat, Amelia Boat Club rents boats and waverunners so you, too, can experience the beauty of Cumberland Island. Alternatively, you can take a ferry from St. Marys, Georgia, and spend the day on the island, or if you’re planning to book a room at Greyfield Inn, a ferry runs from Fernandina’s downtown marina. Amelia River Cruises and Amelia Adventures also offer trips to Cumberland Island.
