Now in its 16th season, the Amelia Island Jazz Festival is a swingin’ affair led by festival founder and artistic director Les DeMerle, the renowned jazz drummer, and his wife, vocalist Bonnie Eisele.

Amelia

September brings the beginning of fall, and that always means the start of some cooler weather here in northeast Florida. Despite my love of three-day weekends, Labor Day has seemed less important since we moved here many years ago because it no longer distinctly separates the summer from the start of the school year. Of course, my kids don’t know what I’m talking about because school has always started for them in mid-August. But regardless of when the school year begins, it always brings the curtain down on summer and marks the start of new schedules and regular routines. Here on Amelia Island, another harbinger of fall for me is the return of the Amelia Island Jazz Festival each year. Now in its 16th season, the Amelia Island Jazz Festival is a swingin’ affair led by festival founder and artistic director Les DeMerle, the renowned drummer and bandleader, and his wife, vocalist Bonnie Eisele. DeMerle, who began his career with jazz legends Lionel Hampton and Harry James, continues to bring the best jazz musicians in the world to Amelia Island. Following appearances at past festivals by jazz giants such as David Sanborn, Ramsey Lewis, Spyro Gira, and Larry Coryell, DeMerle has put together another stellar line-up this year, headlined by the charismatic and highly regarded trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis and sizzling trumpeter Jamil Sharif at venues around the island. The festival features a full week of shows and events, kicking off with the free “Jazz in the Park” Sunday concert in Amelia Park, then continuing with “Wine Tasting and Jazz” at Story & Song Bookstore Bistro, the Swing Night Concert & Dance featuring the Dynamic Les DeMerle Little Big Band with Bonnie Eisele at the Sandbar & Kitchen, and the popular Latin Jazz Night in its usual Thursday night spot at the Sandbar & Kitchen with the award-winning Trio Caliente. Additionally, following the headliner performances Friday and Saturday nights, don’t miss everyone’s favorite Late Night Jams this year at Sliders Beach Bar & Grill. It promises to be another great week of music! Also in this issue, we take a look at the American Beach Museum’s fifth anniversary celebration, which honors the life and work of Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole, greatgranddaughter of American Beach founder A. L. Lewis and sister of “The Beach Lady” MaVynee Betsch, and includes actor and writer Danny Glover and other notables; check in on the new baby white rhinos born recently at White Oak Conservation as part of their continuing efforts to protect and preserve endangered species; enjoy a “Backyard Adventure” with Julie Simmons and her kids at Amelia Makery; and much more.

The cornerstone of the Amelia Island Jazzz Festival is its educational programs. Led byy h DeMerle, the festival seeks to enrich minds with the sounds, excitement, and vitality of jazz. Jazzz In The Schools was designed to expose youngg re people to the art of jazz, while motivating more students to pursue jazz as a musical endeavor.r. ns Featuring workshops led by master musicians ol for grade school, middle school, and high school d students, more than 2,000 area students attend this program each year. l’s Each year, since 2009, the festival’s ia educational programs culminate in the Amelia Island Jazz Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded on an annual basis to a graduating high school senior. The scholarship is used toward college expenses necessary to earn a major or minor in music in the area of jazz performance or related area. It is the desire of the Jazz Festival board to help preserve Jazz, this all American art form, by helping young, talented artists who are pursuing their dream of becoming jazz musicians. This year’s scholarship winner is saxophonist and drummer John Brown, a Fernandina Beach High School graduate who will be attending University of North Florida, majoring in music. CARS & CANNONS RETURNS TO FORT CLINCH STATE PARK Can you imagine vintage cars inside historic Fort Clinch State Park? Come see just this at Cars & Cannons, the only car show—anywhere—inside a historic fort! Returning for its second year on September 28, this ‘just for fun’ show will boast a 52’ Bentley, a 23’ Ford T-Bucket Hot Rod, and several 1960’s and 1970’s MG’s and Triumphs, as well as 1960’s Muscle Cars. A unique detail of the show is that most of the cars are local, the same hot rods you’ll see cruising our streets on special occasions. If you are interested in attending, you may purchase tickets on the day of the show—rain or shine—at the entrance to Fort Clinch. Admittance is $6 per vehicle and an additional $2.50 per individual; the cars will be on display from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you own a fancy ride model year 1994 or older, you are invited to join the Cars & Cannons family. Visit friendsoffortclinchinc. org for more information. All proceeds support Friends of Fort Clinch, a citizens group committed to preserving Florida’ natural and cultural resources while providing outstanding recreational and educational opportunities to the public inside Fort Clinch State Park.

OLIVIA HOBLIT

September is National Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month, and Amelia Island’s Trinity Love Hoblit Foundation wants you to understand the causes, symptoms, and treatment for brain aneurysms. The Foundation was established to honor Trinity—Amelia Island’s beloved, energetic, ray of sunshine—who at age nine was diagnosed with multiple aneurysms and fought through numerous surgeries. In 2015, just days away from another procedure, her aneurysm ruptured. She was 14 years old. Her family and loved ones established the Foundation to support and fund neurological research, training treatment, and public awareness. This month, in honor of Trinity, the Foundation invites you to learn more about brain aneurysms. “Within our Trinity Love Hoblit bodies, important blood vessels called arteries carry blood from the heart to the rest of our organs,” explains Olivia Hoblit, president and founder. “If a weak spot develops along an artery wall, that artery may begin to bulge, like a balloon filling with air. If the bulging artery is located in your brain, it is called a brain aneurysm. If it ruptures, meaning the bulge has burst, blood will leak into your brain. This is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical treatment.” Visit www.trinityhoblit.org for more information.

AMELIA PLANTATION CHAPEL KICKS OFF 30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION Amelia Plantation Chapel in Amelia Island Plantation is kicking off a yearlong celebration commemorating the dedication of the chapel 30 years ago. With roots extending to 1974, the Chapel is a loving community on the south end of Amelia Island that worships, studies the Bible, witnesses the gospel of Christ, and serves others. From humble beginnings, the Chapel was founded by Amelia Island Plantation residents of different Christian denominations seeking a place to worship in their community. Outgrowing all their meeting spaces, a two-acre site was purchased in 1989, where today a lovely building sits in a wooded setting along a lagoon complete with a large sanctuary, fellowship hall, and serene memory garden. A grateful congregation will celebrate the fulfillment of the dreams and legacies of its first members on October 6, 2019 with a replication of the original groundbreaking ceremony. In this unique service, members and guests are invited to bring small soil samples from their former or summertime churches to mix together and deposit in the ground on the Chapel property exactly as was done at the original ceremony on September 3, 1989. You are invited to both the celebration and worship services, Sundays at 9:15 and 11:15 a.m. COURTESY APC

“G

et ready to grab a tote bag and clean out your car because you’re going to need the space,” laughs Susie Sergent, owner of Antiques and More Treasures. “You’re about to embark on an antiquing adventure at the most unassuming but completely charming antique store in Yulee, Florida.” Susie is a Florida native who has a passion for antiquing and collecting; she feels that purchasing antiques are like purchasing a piece of history. “It makes me feel like I’m in a time machine,” says Susie. “I feel connected to another person who lived and loved so long ago.” It takes a special set of skills to master the art of antiquing, skills which are cultivated by research, practice in the field, patience, and training the eyes to recognize quality. In other words, it takes time to learn the ropes. Some of Susie’s vendors have spent a lifetime shopping for and collecting antiques and other eclectic pieces, and sharing them with people who love them as much as they do. “Our vendors say it’s a great feeling knowing that the pieces they refinish and

repurpose will find the right home,” says Susie. “Many of the items continue to bring the homeowner years of pleasure, and often they get passed onto other family members.” Antiques and More Treasures is celebrating its seventh anniversary and is eager to thank all their customers, shopkeepers, vendors, consignors, and friends for their continued support. “We so appreciate our vendors who bring life to the shop with their passion and the way they decorate their booths with all sorts of fun things to browse,” says Susie. “It allows our customers to take a stroll down memory lane, seeing and touching things that they grew up with.” Antiques and More Treasures has an inventory that changes daily, and you’ll always find something new! Visit them at 463146 State Road 200 in Yulee or follow them on Instagram @antiques_ and_more_treasures and on Facebook @antiquesandm, or call them at (904) 548-6080. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

oastal Sash and Door, a family-owned company, was founded in Savannah, Georgia, as a distributor of Marvin Windows and Doors. The company has expanded significantly over the last 30 years and now has six showroom locations stretching from South Carolina to north Florida. Coastal Sash and Door is committed to providing the best overall experience for your next project—from beginning to end. Sam Frederick, General Manager at the Amelia Island location, has been working in the building industry for over 30 years. He works closely with local architects, homeowners, remodelers, builders, and commercial contractors to ensure you get a beautiful product that performs in the harsh, coastal conditions. The Amelia showroom carries interior and exterior doors, entry doors, windows, and hardware and is the premier dealer of Marvin Windows and Doors. “We are the local window experts, especially with building codes,” says Sam, explaining that local ordinances restrict light pollution on the beach, requiring oceanfront windows to block 40 percent of interior light. “With new construction or remodels on the beach, we have to comply with those ordinances.” Coastal Sash and Door has a showroom, and Sam is ready to meet with customers who are building or remodeling. “We are excited to work with customers and find them the best window and door solutions,” says Sam. “We can do one window, or a house full of windows and doors!” For more information, call (904) 261-0488 or visit www.CoastalSashandDoor.com.

r. Diane Pennington founded Camden Oral Surgery in St. Marys, Georgia in 2006, after relocating from Omaha, Nebraska. “We loved the coastal region and had discovered there was no oral surgeon in Camden County,” says Dr. Pennington, who holds both a doctor of dentistry degree and a medical degree. “There was a real need for my specialty here.” Camden Oral Surgery provides dental implants, bone grafting, tooth extractions, and wisdom tooth removal, as well as the treatment of oral pathology and facial trauma. Seven additional staff members, including four surgical assistants, work with Dr. Pennington. Dr. Pennington’s anesthesia permit and extensive training allows her to perform procedures under IV sedation and general anesthesia. The practice treats both adult and pediatric patients. Dr. Pennington is originally from Warner Robins, Georgia. She attended undergraduate school at Emory University and graduated from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry. Dr. Pennington served in the United States Air Force Dental Squadron for three years, then attended the University of Nebraska to obtain her medical degree and complete her residency. Dr. Pennington, a Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, is a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Camden Oral Surgery is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and on Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. For more information, call (912) 673-6545 or visit www.camdenoralsurgery.com.

T

he American Beach Museum has been an important part of Amelia Island’s cultural scene for the past five years. A four-day event this month marks the founding of the museum, which “remembers the historic African American journey of vision, struggle, joy, and triumph” at American Beach. Several extraordinary events commemorate the anniversary, including an evening of elegance to honor the extraordinary life and accomplishments of Jacksonville native Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole, the great-granddaughter of American Beach co-founder Abraham Lincoln Lewis. The celebration brings together nationally recognized actors, educators, family members, and prominent American Beach community members. A black-tie-optional reception hosted by actor, producer, and writer Danny Glover honors

Dr. Cole—the sister of “The Beach Lady” MaVynee Betsch —who will receive the A.L. Lewis Legacy Award for her memorable accomplishments, including serving as President of Spelman College and Director of the Smithsonian Institute’s National African Museum of Art. The reception includes a jazz performance, dramatic reading, tributes to Dr. Cole, and a special performance by vocalist Alyson Williams. Dr. Cole is pleased that the fifth anniversary of the museum coincides with the fourteenth anniversary of her sister MaVynee’s death. “How could we not celebrate all that American Beach has been and must be on that special day?” she asks. As Dr. Cole points out, “anything of significance has never been done by one person,” and she notes that this museum continued on next page

and the anniversary are “all about all of us.” Dr. Cole, who is compiling a book of African proverbs, cited one of her favorites: “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” On Friday, September 6, Essence Magazine icon and television personality Susan L. Taylor and Dr. Cole will be at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island to celebrate high tea with the theme “In the Spirit with Sister Cole.” On Saturday, September 7, retired Federal Judge Henry Lee Adams, Jr. will be interviewed by current Federal District Judge Brian Davis about the continuing quest for justice. Both men are residents of American Beach. On Sunday, the celebration closes with an American Beach Community worship service at Franklintown Community Church. The American Beach museum will be open for tours at no charge afterward. Carol Alexander, director of cultural resource company Mabu and a co-founder of the Museum, has spearheaded this event. “This idea has come out not of the head, but of the heart and soul of Carol Alexander,” says Dr. Cole. Alexander, who considers herself the “spiritual daughter of Beach Lady MaVynee Betsch,” says MaVynee always spoke about the need for a museum at American Beach. “MaVynee always made it known at every county meeting how important it was to honor the history of American Beach,” say Alexander. “Eventually, the A.L. Lewis Historical Society took on the project and built on MaVynee’s dreams.” Fernandina Beach native Neil Frink, who serves on the board of the A.L. Lewis Historical Society, points out that the entire community got behind the establishment of the museum. Alexander was the Director of the Ritz Theater in Jacksonville when a man named Yuwnus Asami discovered boxes with documents and mementos relating to American Beach and brought them to her. Alexander stored and helped curate the photographs, documents, and mementos that are in the museum today. The museum is housed in the American Beach Community Center. than MaVynee Betsch—explains the historical significance of American Beach and beckons the visitor to learn and enjoy. The collection of photographs and memorabilia show glorious times, and remind guests of the sad history of Jim Crow. Visitors will find Yuwnus Asami there every day that the museum is open. His love for and dedication to the museum shines through his quiet personality as he shows visitors around. Dr. Cole says that it is critically important for elders to “pour information into the young,” and that is why she is so excited about the events celebrating the fifth anniversary of the museum. The American Beach Museum is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., and from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. The museum is located at 1600 Julia Street in American Beach.

f one is good, then two is better, or at least that is whatt d the White Oak Conservation Foundation family said n about their brand new pair of white rhino girls born in July—just two weeks apart! “Our rhinos live in naturalistic, healthy enclosures, and they do what comes naturally—and lately it was having babies,” smiles Brandy Carvalho, Development & Sustainability Manager at White Oak. “We are committed to letting our animals conceive and deliver their offspring naturally whenever possible, so we stay pretty hands-off,” Brandy explains when I asked how this all works. “Early on we can recognize the signs of pregnancy, which usually lasts around 16 months. Additionally, we’ve learned the signs of delivery. When the timing is right, we move the mother to a smaller habitat for privacy and safety.” Soon after, the rhino delivers as she would in the wild, on her own, and within hours, the baby rhino is moving, walking, and bonding with her. “We keep them together for as long as 41 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

the mother desires desires, and when they are ready ready, the pair rejoin the rest of the herd.” “So why rhinos?” I ask Brandy. She responds that rhinos are one of White Oak’s flagship species and their work with rhinos dates back three decades to when Howard Gilman established the organization. White Oak, located just north of us in the Yulee area, was founded to be just this—a leading continued on next page

global organization for conservation of threatened and endangered species. “When we started our program, it was before the rhino conservation issues escalated to the place they are today. It was very forward thinking to begin work in this space,” says Brandy. “White rhinos are one of the three rhino species that thrive at White Oak. We also protect black and greater one-horned rhinos. “Though white rhinos are more numerous in the wild than the other five species, they, too, are threatened by habitat destruction and poachers, who kill them for their horns. Traditionally, the poaching was for medicinal purposes, but the demand increased, and today a black market exists where folks treasure Rhino trinkets, bowls, and bracelets as status symbols beyond the strictly medicinal purposes.” If you would like to visit White Oak and see the rhinos, along with the 31 other species of wildlife including antelope, buffalo, giraffe, and okapi that call White Oak home—there are several ways to do so. Public two-hour trolley tours are offered Wednesdays and Fridays at 10 a.m., with tickets priced $100 per adult and $50 per child. Another option is to tour the property on horseback in their Safari from the Saddle tour. You may also attend monthly White Oak special events, which include Saturday Safari, Sunset Safari, Breakfast with the Beasts, or most appropriately on September 19, Winos for Rhinos. Winos for Rhinos includes a tour of the new and expanding rhino habitats, where you will meet all three species, their caretakers, and learn about the conservation programs. During your stops, you may try African wine and hors d’oeuvres prepared by White Oak’s culinary team. The event concludes with a tour of the historic Gilman Hall, where you will enjoy a gourmet dinner. Proceeds from all events fund the conservation and education programs. For more information about White Oak, their conservation efforts, and rhinos, visit www.whiteoakwildlife.org. bountiful bulbs Despite the continued warm weather, September is a great time to get a head start on your fall garden with bulbs for the stunning Jessie Starflower and the Lycoris Magic Lily. BY BETTY MORRELL

N

ow is the time to create your fall garden. Despite the weather, fall starts on September 23. Plants put in the ground at this time will get a really good head start for next year’s garden. There are so many fun plants and colors to add to your garden, and I think bulbs would be a good start. They can be planted now for next spring and summer flowers. Let’s begin with the beautiful Gentian blue color, which is awesome in drifts. Jessie Starflower is the one sporting that striking color (Ipheion jessie). Jessie is a bulb that grows a moundshaped plant 9 to 12 inches high and 4 to 6 inches wide. This little gem blooms up to 8 weeks. Plant in full sun to part-shade. Jessie has a floral scent, but the dark green foliage retains an onion-like aroma. Jessie is said to be the showiest Starflower. After early spring blooms, it goes dormant in the summer and re-appears in the fall. This little plant is disease- and pestresistant and tolerates heat and cold. Use in borders, beds, and containers. Another interesting bulb is the Lycoris Magic Lily. This Lily seems like Magic as it appears overnight.

TIP OF T HE M O N T H To change blue Hydrangeas to pink, add 3 to 4 cups of garden lime at roots every 3 weeks. For pink to blue, add aluminum sulfate, pine needles, compost, or coffee grounds.

Weeks after the foliage dies back and you have forgotten where you planted it – surprise! A fun unexpected arrival at the end of the season. (One of its common names is Surprise Lily.) As summer flowers end, Magic Lily arrives to brighten your garden. Buds appear on sturdy 30-inch stems, which also seem to shoot up instantly. The stems are bare, but the elegant bud quickly opens to show off its eye-catching 2 to 3 inch pale pink, apricot blooms. Butterflies love this long-blooming, easy-care Lily. Plant in full sun to partshade. It is cold hardy, drought, heat, and humidity-tolerant. Plant in beds, borders and use as beautiful cut flowers. This bulb will naturalize easily. weather is called Denim and Lace (Perovskia atriplicifolia). Russian Sage plants are woody-based perennials of the mint family. This PP striking purple-blue plant is an easy-care plant that stays below 30 inches so it doesn’t overpower your garden. Lacy-like bright sky blue flowers are held on amethyst calyxes, giving it a strong upright habit. The blooms from mid-summer through mid-fall. Denim and Lace makes a wonderful companion to Roses. Annabelle, a truly spectacular hydrangea, is perhaps the most popular old-fashioned shrub grown in American gardens. Once established, this compact 4 to 5 foot tall and 3 to 5 foot wide shrub will be covered with giant snowy white blooms. It is coldhardy, disease, heat and humiditytolerant. Annabelle likes shade and makes a great landscape plant. Use it for fresh flowers or dry them. They are useful in a border, as foundation planting, or an accent plant. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

John and Barbara bought their first vacation home in Amelia Island Plantation in 2003. After moving to Amelia full-time in 2016, the couple decided they would like to build a new home that would include an art studio for Barbara. The new home would have to accommodate treasured family antiques, collected artwork, and much of Barbara’s original artwork. The result? A 4,500 square foot house with a large studio for Barbara, a generous work area over the garage for John, and the space they love to share —the kitchen. Barbara’s studio is her happy place. The generous space allows for the display of a wide variety of her paintings. Barbara is a well-known artist whose work is shown at several galleries, including the Plantation Artists’ Guild and Gallery, where she is currently gallery director and first vice-president. A lighting specialist designed the lighting in Barbara’s studio so that it can be adjusted. Day or night, Hopkins is assured of perfect light for her creative efforts. 54 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

John and Barbara credit Julie Johnson of Julia Hall Interiors with helping them refine the inside of the house to accommodate their collected furnishings and Barbara’s beautiful artwork. Museum-like in its simplicity, the interior walls, ceiling, and trim are painted a classic white. The detail in each room is so precise that floorboards go in the direction of one’s entry into the room. The large, open kitchen offers a variety of work areas where the couple can work together without getting in each other’s way, including multiple sinks. Detailing includes a two-drawer, under-the-counter refrigerator perfect for salad makings and vegetables. The showpiece in the kitchen is a wood topped island and table. John found the solid cherry slab and commissioned a Glenville, Georgia craftsman to build the island top. The unfinished top was installed, and then John took over. Using his boat building and woodworking skills, he applied a semi-gloss protective finish that is resilient and beautiful. The kitchen adjoins a large screen porch, and next to that is an even larger open deck just begging a party. 56 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Pepper’s COCINA MEXICANA & TEQUILA BAR In addition to its delicious Mexican cuisine, Pepper’s has a wide variety of fine tequilas, making it a perfect place to gather for drinks, great food, and conversation. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

L

ast Friday night I was happy to get out of the house and meet some friends for dinner and drinks at Pepper’s. Pepper’s has long been a go-to spot to satisfy my family or a large group, but tonight I was meeting friend and fellow teacher Laura Porter and her husband, Josh, to celebrate our first week of school and enjoy some “grown-up time” together. When we arrived, the place was hopping, with the bar full and folks waiting to be seated. We had hoped to sit on the comfortable patio, but as a group left the bar, we decided to slide in behind them. We were greeted warmly by Brett, our host and bartender for the evening. Brett casually worked up and down the bar, talking and laughing with guests while pouring drinks and placing orders. A basket of warm tortilla chips and fresh salsa arrived, and we added some warm, creamy queso and cool guacamole. Since we were feeling celebratory, Brett lined up a round of Maestro 60 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Diamante tequila shots. The bar at Pepper’s is stocked with dozens of fine tequilas. The Dobel Diamante is crystal-clear and smooth as silk, with notes of citrus; aged in oak and double filtered, it’s to be savored rather than chased with a lime. As we got comfortable, Josh and I ordered beers and Laura a Jalapeno Margarita. The margarita was cool and delicious, with a little kick from their homemade jalapeno-infused tequila. Laura is braver than I, tougher too; I like my margaritas frozen with fruit in them. Who doesn’t love a slushy? We talked our way through two baskets of chips without even looking at the menu, then placed our orders while we swapped stories and caught up on the summer’s activities. I ordered the Ceviche Mixto, a delicious combination of limecured grouper and shrimp with fresh peppers, onions, and tomatoes. I love a dish like this on a hot night, it’s the perfect bar bite: delicious and complementary to the drinks. Josh went with a Chicken Burrito and Laura the Steak Fajita Nachos. Both looked delicious. Josh was keen to share, but Laura threatened violence if her plate was touched. In the end, Laura capitulated and I did get to try a piece of the steak and a couple nachos. As we enjoyed our entrees, we tried the Jose Quervo Reserva de Familia. Aged in oak for an amber color and smoky flavor, this Añejo tequila is aged for three years. Brett tells me that this is a perfect drink for someone who traditionally prefers a brandy or bourbon. The Reserva is 100 percent agave, but shares the warm character so familiar to whisky enthusiasts. For dessert, we had a trio of fruit-flavored margaritas and a plate of Churros with Dulce de Leche. Dulce de leche is a caramel made from slow-cooked sweetened milk, and it was sinfully delicious with the warm crunchy churros covered in cinnamon and sugar. We devoured the tasty treats, but lingered over the margaritas. Peppers Cocina Mexicana and Tequila Bar is a lively place to hang out with cool drinks and hot eats. Located at Centre and 6th Streets, Pepper’s is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.

t was a rainy Saturday when Raleigh, Carter, and I set out for a morning of fun, painting pottery and wood at Amelia Makery. Happy to find an activity indoors, our eyes grew wide when we stepped inside and saw the possibilities! “I love helping people be creative,” said owner Lisa Schneider. A look around the decorated walls and pottery-filled shelves of samples that she crafted told me that Lisa is very talented. “The first step is to choose what you want to make,” she explained while she showed us our options, each clearly priced. With endless choices of stencils to customize and glazes to pair with your ceramic piece, picking what to make is exciting, yet not so easy, especially for the kiddos. I decided on a tray with a sand dollar to match my family room, while my daughter and son chose signs for their rooms. Having owned ceramic and painting studios before opening Amelia Makery in January, Lisa knows exactly how to help her customers produce their best effort. We got started by hand-sanding and power-sanding our lumber to create a smooth surface for the background staining. Next, we used the blow dryer to blow the dust away before sponge-applying color for the background. “Now we need to sand again,” Lisa said as she knelt beside my daughter and explained that the moisture in the paint causes the wood grain to rise. “You need to put a little muscle into this sand.” When our stencils were adhered to the wood, we appreciated our family time together as we listened to some enjoyable music and applied our favorite hues, dreaming of the finished product. “I can’t wait to see what it looks like when we take off the stencil,” my creative 11-year-old beamed. Sure enough, when we peeled back the vinyl, the result was a creation better than any of us imagined! “It’s so rewarding when customers who say they can’t even draw a stick figure learn that ‘yes they can’ create something they love,” Lisa said. Not only are Lisa and her husband Joe delighted to meet everyone who comes to the shop, but they’re also thrilled about giving back to our community. “We are honored to sponsor the Barnabas Empty Bowls Luncheon by donating 500 ceramic bowls,” she said, explaining that local groups have been visiting for special painting events to prepare the bowls for the luncheon. Amelia Makery is also the perfect location for your special event. From birthday parties to private gatherings or a ladies night out, where groups of four or more receive 10% off, there is something for everyone. “We love hosting your groups, and you’re welcome to bring a bottle of wine or a cake to celebrate occasions with us,” she promised. And with the holidays around the corner, Lisa invites you to see her festive inventory, from pumpkin platters and trays to nostalgic light-up ceramic Christmas trees and even “cookies for Santa” plates. You’re sure to find something you’ll love! Or if you’re in a rush, all samples on display are also available for purchase. On a rainy day or a sunny day, Amelia Makery is sure to be a good time no matter your age, your artistic talent, or previous experience. Amelia Makery is located at 9900 Amelia Island Parkway, Ste. 100. Visit www.ameliamakery.com for hours and more information.
