To protect the health and safety of concertgoers and performers, DeMerle, Eisele, and the AIJF board made the decision to move this year’s concerts online as virtual performances.

ISLANDER Philip Kelly Deana Basile Kelly Publishers and Editors Tom Barrett Art Director Mark O’Day Sales Manager

The arrival of Labor Day is always a harbinger of change, with its return to regular fall rhythms of work and responsibility. Happily, on Amelia Island, as carefree summer memories fade, fall also brings the return of the swingin’ rhythms of the Amelia Island Jazz Festival, now in its seventeenth season. The festival owes its success to jazz drummer Les DeMerle, artistic director and founder of the festival with his wife, Bonnie Eisele. An Amelia Island resident since 1991, Les got his start drumming with vibraphone great Lionel Hampton, and subsequently worked with musical icons like Harry James, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, and Joe Williams. Les and Bonnie are backed by a hard-working group of volunteers who help make the jazz festival an unforgettable event each year. This year, however, the jazz festival has run straight into the Covid pandemic. Nonetheless, in order to continue bringing great jazz music to a wide audience on Amelia Island and promote jazz music to young musicians, DeMerle was determined that the show must go on. To protect the health and safety of both concertgoers and performers, DeMerle, Eisele, and the AIJF board made the decision to move this year’s concerts online as virtual performances. Like every year, the festival will feature a week of great jazz music, but in a new and unique format. The festival kicks off on October 5 with a Rat Pack Happy Hour broadcast from Elizabeth Pointe, featuring the sounds of Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. On October 7, Park West Gallery will feature an online auction celebrating the original art of 2019 AIJF artist Peter Nixon and 2020 AIJF artist Allison Lefcort. On October 9, the AIJF celebrates the life of Duke Ellington with its ticketed virtual headlining concert, “A Salute to the Duke,” broadcast live from Story & Song Bookstore Bistro. On October 10, the AIJF celebrates the life of Louis Armstrong with “To Satchmo with Love,” featuring trumpet aficionado Longineu Parsons. Hailed by critics as one of the world’s finest trumpet players, Parsons has performed his show on Broadway and Carnegie Hall. On Sunday, October 11, the festival wraps up with a special program presented by WJCT PBS Radio’s Electro Lounge Jazz Brunch, featuring AIJF’s highlights of 17 years of exciting performances, including David Sanborn, Delfeayo Marsalis, and Bria Skonberg. Also in this issue, we preview the 2020 Professional Putters Association National Championship, returning to Putt-Putt Amelia for a week of skilled competition; present a profile of Robyn Nemes, local artist, musician, and tireless volunteer; get ready for Katelyn’s Ride, a golf cart poker run to support children with autism and their families; prepare a delicious pot roast; and much more. See you around the island!

T

he year 2020 has been a tough one for musicians, whose lives are completely dependent upon their music and live performances. For jazz musicians Les DeMerle and Bonnie Eisele, it has been especially challenging, as they were headlining on the Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas, cruising the Caribbean, when the world was shutting down during a global pandemic. And Les DeMerle if that wasn’t bad enough, DeMerle suffered an eye injury and had to take medical leave for three months while being treated at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. But DeMerle and Eisele were not to be deterred from doing what they love best, which is bringing jazz music to Amelia Island. Since 2001, the couple has hosted the Amelia Island Jazz Festival, a rich, diverse cultural offering, exposing thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds to the sounds, excitement, and vitality of great jazz music. And although the festival will be a little different this year, DeMerle is adamant that the show must go on! DeMerle launched his career as drummer for jazz vibraphone great Lionel Hampton while still in high school at age 16. He then 11 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

for 12 years with jazz trumpet master Harry James, recording three albums with him, including the Grammy Award-winning King James Version. Les’ own jazz/rock/fusion band, Transfusion, recorded five award-winning LPs. He has toured with Manhattan Transfer and appeared with such musical greats as Lou Rawls, Sammy Davis, Jr., Frank Sinatra, Mel Tormé, and Joe Williams. A resident of Amelia Island since 1991, Les continues to perform at concerts, festivals, and jazz cruises with his trio, quartet and the Dynamic Les DeMerle Big Band Orchestra featuring Bonnie Eisele, which has recorded 13 CDs including their latest recording, Comin’ Home Baby, an Origin Records release. In 2001, Les’s longtime dream of creating a diversified jazz festival on Amelia Island came to fruition. He and his wife, Bonnie Eisele, produced the festival for three years prior to its incorporation as a non-profit 501(c)3 tax exempt organization. Eisele is the featured vocalist with the Dynamic Les DeMerle Band. She has appeared with the band at many popular jazz clubs, including Somerset’s in Singapore; City Jazz in Orlando; The Jazz Corner in Hilton Head; and Arturo Sandoval’s in Miami. She also has toured the U.S. and Europe with the Chicago Free Street Theater, an original musical theater and dance group. Bonnie’s diverse performing experience includes singing at the Chicago Playboy Club, Chicago Fest, Drury Lane Theater and Miami’s Fontainebleau Resort. She studied music and dance in Brazil on a Rotary Foundation Graduate Fellowship.

the 2020 festival as virtual online shows. Held October 5-11, this year’s festival will be a unique and vibrant way to enjoy the rich heritage of this diverse genre of music. “Our belief is that the Amelia Island Jazz Festival benefits our community, both culturally and economically,” says DeMerle. “As musicians, we’ve found creative ways to bring jazz back to Amelia Island, and we’re planning for another successful festival!” But the Amelia Island Jazz Festival is much more than music. DeMerle and Eisele offer education and scholarship programs to expose young people to the art of jazz, while motivating more students to pursue jazz as a musical endeavor. With workshops led by master musicians for elementary school, middle school, and high school students, more than 2,000 area students attend this program each year. These educational programs culminate in the Amelia Island Jazz Festival Scholarship, a financial award presented to deserving high school musicians who demonstrate strong potential to perform jazz at the collegiate level. “This year’s winner is 18-year-old jazz drummer Janae Yates, a student from Jacksonville’s Douglas Anderson School for the Arts, who also played in the Florida All State Jazz Orchestra,” says DeMerle. “On October 8, Janae and I will live stream online as I interview her, and she will play a drum solo as we interact together on a rhythm jam.” Just as the festival encourages young performers to pursue careers in jazz, it also offers a rich cultural experience for more mature audiences. Consisting of demonstrations and informative programs at senior centers, over 500 seniors were entertained at last year’s festival. “This type of participation, including the nearly 1,000 area residents who attended last 14 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Tre to Richie Cole

Bonnie, Richie, and Les

(February 29, 1948 – May 2, 2020)

BROOKLYN-BORN LES DEMERLE had heard of Trenton, New Jersey saxophonist Richie Cole through the grapevine, and you might say a meeting between these two East Coast wunderkinds was inevitable. “I first heard of Richie in 1967,” says DeMerle. “I had a band, Sound 67, with Randy Brecker and Arnie Lawrence, among others. There was a buzz about this kid from Trenton! Richie was just out of high school, he hadn’t started at Berklee yet, but he’d been wowing people at Phil Woods’ jazz camp.” Two years later, DeMerle was playing with Wayne Newton at the Frontier in Las Vegas and Cole was in town playing with Buddy Rich. “I’d released the album Spectrum on United Artists that year and I had all my charts with me. “I’d asked Wayne if I could rehearse a band after our show,” says DeMerle. “Wayne was fine with it, and so Richie was among the first I asked to sit in. Shortly thereafter, Buddy Rich recorded his live album, Keep the Customer Satisfied, at the Tropicana. Richie invited me down to listen to their rehearsals. We hit it off. We hung out. Drank together, played together, chased girls together.” Cole performed and recorded with Eddie Jefferson, Nancy Wilson, Tom Waits, The Manhattan Transfer, Hank Crawford, Freddie Hubbard, Eric Kloss,

Bobby Enriquez, Phil Woods, Sonny Stitt, Art Pepper, and Boots Randolph. He recorded over 50 albums, including his albums Hollywood Madness (Muse, 1979) and Richie Cole Plays West Side Story (Music Masters, 1997), a tribute to Leonard Bernstein. “Richie and I had always kept in touch,” says DeMerle. “Whenever he was in any part of the world I was in, we’d get together. When Dr. Herb Wong wrote the liner notes for my 2001 album, You’re the Bop, featuring Bonnie Eisele, he quoted Richie as saying, ‘We think alike. Les knows what I’m going to play before I play it.’ That’s the type of serious interplay that only comes with familiarity. Some of the greatest music I’ve ever played in my life has been with Richie. He was a true character with a zest for life. Whether playing or just hanging out, he was fun to be around. He was also a favorite performer at the Amelia Island Jazz Festival. Richie will always be my Bebop brother.”

Doug Matthews

Delfeayo Marsalis, Nestor Torres, Houston Person, Bria Skonberg, Steve March Tormé, and The Dynamic Les DeMerle Band with Bonnie Eisele. “Be sure to tune in to WJCT, HD4 , or on the WJCT app or online at wjct.org/jaxmusic/electro-lounge-radio/ from 10 a.m. until noon,” says DeMerle. “It’s going to be a great way to spend a Sunday morning capping off the 2020 festival. DeMerle and Eisele are inviting fans of the festival to continue to support and sponsor the 2020 AIJF. “We will miss seeing you all in person this year,” says DeMerle. “But we’re looking forward to bringing you superb performances of the uniquely American music, jazz, in a new, necessary, and creatively re-invented way – without missing a beat!” Ernie Ealum

Tickets and more information are available online at www. ameliaislandjazzfestival.com. For virtual and live-stream shows, the ticket purchaser will receive a link to the show and an access code. This access code will unlock the show at the time of the performance. 20 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

TRINITY LOVE HOBLIT FOUNDATION GALA AT THE OMNI RESORT ON SEPTEMBER 19 During National Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month in September, the Trinity Love Hoblit Foundation presents its 4th annual Gala at the Omni Amelia Island Resort on September 19 from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. The event includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, and entertainment, with proceeds benefitting the Trinity Love Hoblit Foundation, which supports and funds neurological research, training, treatment, and public awareness. Trinity Hoblit was born with a rare form of primordial dwarfism. Although small in stature, she had an enormous spirit that captured the hearts of everyone. At age nine, Trinity was diagnosed with multiple brain aneurysms. She passed away in 2015 at age fourteen. Trinity was an advocate of organ donation, and with her family’s support, she gave life to three donor recipients after her death. The Hoblit family continues to bless others through the work of the foundation. The Gala includes a live auction and music by Grammy Award-winning Dave Yaden, a virtuosic piano player who has written and performed with One Republic, John Mayer, Lady Antebellum, and many others. A portion of all gifts to the Trinity Love Hoblit Foundation Endowment at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, Baptist Neurological Institute, and Baptist Nassau is matched by Baptist Health. BESTSELLING AUTHOR JOHN CRIBB PRESENTS TALK ON LINCOLN AT THE BOOK LOFT

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY OFFERS A VIRTUAL EXHIBITION When social distancing is in order, we find ways to adapt, and Friends of the Fernandina Beach Library (FOL), in partnership with the Timucuan Parks Foundation, is doing just that with its new virtual art exhibition, “Timucuan Parks Foundation: Celebrate and Explore Our Wilderness Parks” 20th Anniversary Exhibition. “We prepared a wonderful exhibit, which is now on display at the Fernandina Beach Branch Library Community Room,” says FOL Communication Chair Hope Foley. “The exhibit will be with us until the end of the year, but we can’t visit ‘live’ until the Library reopens to the public. In the meantime, we are excited to offer a four-minute virtual video tour.” The exhibit arrived here following its presentation at the Jacksonville Museum of Science and History. The multimedia exhibition includes four park paintings by Kathy Stark, video drone footage by Tom Schifanella, still images by photographer Will Dickey, and a collection of graphical maps of state parks surrounding our community. It also features panels that highlight the Timucuan Parks Foundation accomplishments over the last 20 years, as well as their current resiliency, health, and park development initiatives. To experience it for yourself, visit the FOL website www.fernandinafol.org. PAINTING BY KATHY STARK

With an election just around the corner, learn more about Abraham Lincoln and his campaign for the presidency in a talk entitled “Lincoln’s Campaign and Election: 160 Years Ago” at The Book Loft on September 22 at 5 p.m. New York Times best-selling author John Cribb will share his years of research on Lincoln’s life. The event is free. Cribb recently published a new book, Old Abe, the story of the last five years of Abraham Lincoln’s life. It begins in the spring of 1860 in Illinois and follows Lincoln through his election and the calamity of the Civil War, up to his death at the height of his power. Readers are at Lincoln’s side on every page in epic scenes from American history, such as his signing the Emancipation Proclamation, delivering the Gettysburg Address, and traveling to the front lines of battle. This novel portrays the great American leader who guided the country through, as Lincoln put it, “a new birth of freedom.” As America moves into an election season this fall, the timing of this new book release couldn’t be better. Old Abe reminds us of America’s great story and how we move through difficult seasons and rise stronger together as a nation.

ill Wilkinson fell in love with designing, creating, and building when she was just a little girl. Owner of JW Frame Gallery on South 14th Street, Jill gives her father a lot of credit for her skills. “I grew up with a dad who did woodworking and built every home our family lived in,” says Jill. “He taught me all about tools, and how to design and build things. When I got older, I attended art school at University of Georgia, where I also started work at a frame shop.” With over 20 years of experience in the framing business, Jill brings her expertise and unique talents to JW Frame Gallery, where she works with her colleague and friend, Donna Carine. Together, Jill and Donna frame just about anything you can imagine. “For us, it’s not all about just art or photography,” says Jill. “We frame family heirlooms, textiles, custom mirrors, and everything in between.” Jill considers her signature shop different from traditional frame shops. “Besides our custom framing, I wanted to include local artists featuring various types of art and mediums,” says Jill.

“We’re always expanding, growing, offering new services and state-of-the-art framing materials like UV filtering glass, museum glass, acid-free matting and backing, as well as dry mounting, canvas stretching, and Vac-U-Mounting. We also have a 24-inch Canon printer.” In addition, customers can go to www.jwframegallery.com to “try on” frames using a link to the Larson Juhl website before they frame their items with Jill and Donna. “Whether you are looking to enhance your home or office, framing art, certificates, or memories, together we will find the magic combination of custom frames to represent your personal style.” Jill’s appreciation for fine art is the reason she also showcases the work of local artists, including William Maurer, Kathleen Maurer, Martha Scheffler, Roxanne Bieber, Miss Marlene, and many others. JW Frame Gallery is located at 1875 South 14th Street in Fernandina Beach. They are open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (904) 310-6610 or visit jwframegallery.com or their Facebook page.

F

or the first time since 2015, the 61st annual Professional Putters Association National Championship is coming back to Amelia Island and Putt-Putt Amelia! Tom Miller, owner of Putt-Putt Amelia, is once again proud to host this exciting event. Five years ago, Joe Lea and then APA member Roby Fuller won their respective championships in Fernandina Beach by defeating some noteworthy competition. More than 80 players participated in the 2015 PPA national championship, and a total of $25,000 was raised for America’s Youth in Fernandina Beach. With top players like Billy Kirby, who aced the last hole in the final round of the PPA National Invitational for a 68-underpar 220 total and the victory; Greg Ward, a two-time Putter of the Decades for 1990 and 2000; and Tony Varnadore, a former National Champion on the list of competitors, the 2020 National Championship will be an exciting week for golf fans of all ages. It’s true that Putt-Putt golf is fun for the whole family, but the PPA National Championship is serious business. Since the PPA’s inception in 1959, more than $8,500,000 in prize 31 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

money has been awarded, and the search for the world’s best putters is going strong. The story of Putt-Putt golf and the Professional Putters Association started with Don Clayton of Fayetteville, North Carolina, in 1954. Clayton was an insurance salesman. Overworked, over-stressed, and on the verge of a nervous breakdown, his physician ordered him to take a month off of work. Turning to golf as a way to destress, Clayton went to a miniature golf course in his hometown. But instead of finding the course relaxing, he found himself aggravated. Clayton had envisioned a course that relied on skill rather than luck, a course that required the eye of a billiard player and the talents of a putter. But what he found was a maze of obstacles and distractions. The miniature golf course was not at all what he expected, so Clayton decided to build one himself. Clayton spied a vacant lot on the way home. He stopped and took a one-year lease on the lot for a hundred dollars right on cotinued on next page

the spot. Then he sat down and designed an eighteen-hole course that night. The next morning, Clayton bought some lumber, hired some laborers, and began laying out the course. Three weeks later, he was finished. Clayton opened the course and charged 25 cents per round. One year after opening the original location, the first local tournament event was held in Fayetteville. Two years later, in 1957, the first national putting competition took place. Warren Gaines, the first Putt-Putt championship winner, took home a brand-new Cadillac. In 1959, the Putt-Putt Professional Golfers Association (PPPGA) was formed. After the 1960 season, the name was changed to the Professional Putters Association. The first putting match ever to be filmed for television was the PPA “Parade of Champions” TV series in 1961, and in 1965, the PPA expanded to worldwide tournaments. The Amateur Putters Association (APA) was formed in 1969 and today, amateur putters compete in their own division in all PPA tournaments. Tom Miller is proud to be a part of such interesting history. Having opened in 1959, Putt-Putt Amelia is the longest continually operating franchise of Putt-Putt Golf Courses of America. All Putt-Putt courses are kept in pristine condition. The green carpet and orange frames bring back many childhood memories for Miller, who enjoyed hours of Putt-Putt as a kid in the seventies. The 2020 Professional Putters Association National Championship takes place at Putt-Putt Amelia at Main Beach from September 14 - 18, 2020.

ROBYN NEMES

b did you know... BY MANDY HAYNES • PHOTOS BY CHRISTY LE LAIT

I

f you live on Amelia Island, you may know Robyn Nemes as a textile artist. Her fabric brooches inspired by the Japanese art of Kanzashi, are sold at Story and Song Bookstore Bistro, and they can be spotted on lapels and scarves all over the island. But do you know the story behind these pieces? Robyn made her first brooches as thank-you gifts for her wedding. Sadly, a month later, her sister succumbed to cancer. Robyn created a memorial pin from her sister’s favorite bathrobe and wore it all the time. People began to bring special fabrics for her to make pins for them. “I still create memorial pins, but now I create pins from fabrics I love,” says Robyn. You may know Robyn as the ukulele coordinator for the youth ukulele group that’s part of the Fernandina Ukulele Network (FUN). “While it is fun to play and sing songs, it’s a great opportunity for kids to learn how their voices matter,” Robyn explains. Did you know she started a ukulele giveaway program? To be eligible, a child or teen is asked to write a letter that explains who they are and why they want to learn to play. “One of our free ukuleles was sent to a teen in the Philippines! She came across a social media post about the give-away program!” Robyn says with a laugh. The young lady plans to pay it forward and find a way to get ukuleles into the hands of other teens around the world. She calls her dream the Global Love Project.

Do you know Robyn teaches elementary-age children to play the mountain dulcimer? Through afterschool classes sponsored by Arts Alive, a non-profit arts enrichment program in Nassau County, children learn the skills needed to play the dulcimer, but they also learn much more. Leadership opportunities for these children extend beyond the community program at the end of the school year. Students continued on next page

who are passionate about learning the dulcimer, and who exhibit responsibility and compassion, are asked to return the next year as peer tutors. It’s hard to imagine that Robyn was once a painfully shy teen and young adult. “It took me years of hard work to learn how to be more open. And it took two diagnoses of ovarian cancer for me to realize the emotional components that likely contributed to the diagnosis. When I volunteer, it’s my chance to encourage and celebrate leadership, compassion, accountability, self-worth, respect, and gratitude. As I work to help others to feel less of the emotional constriction and devalued sense of self that I once felt, my life becomes richer.” For seven years, Robyn coordinated the Wild Amelia Junior Naturalist Program. She also authored three workbooks on the island’s seashore, its maritime forest, and one on its salt marshes. A volunteer with Keep Nassau Beautiful, she helped create a serenity garden at the local Montessori School. The garden is used for lessons, creative writing, and meditation. And somehow she finds time to visit nursing homes and assisted living facilities to tap dance with a group called the Timesteppers and facilitate a Creative Wellness visual journaling class for women. “The group of women who participate are unafraid to explore topics such as balance and resilience, and the importance of forgiveness,” shares Robyn. I wondered how someone as active as Robyn was able to deal with social distancing during the Covid-19 pandemic. “When life shifted in March, I had to find ways to feel useful. I use social media to spread uplifting messages, as well as old-fashioned snail mail. I have learned how contented my loving husband, Ron, and I can be in our safe home as Happy Hermits! This knowing, too, brings me great joy!” Then she adds with a childlike grin, “Of course I’m always learning something new! Currently I am learning a Japanese art called etegami.” Art that Robyn will no doubt use to brighten someone’s day. www.AmeliaIslander.com

RIDE

To support children with autism and their families, the Conner family and Northeast Florida Advocates for Autism and Related Disabilities host an annual golf cart poker run. BY JULIE SIMMONS

“I

am hungry for fried okra,” Katelyn (KK) Conner says to her mom, Mandy, via her iPad language app, which was developed for children with autism. Mandy and I are catching up about the great work the Northeast Florida Advocates for Autism and Related Disabilities is accomplishing, when Mandy excused herself to tend to her daughter’s need. Mandy’s priorities were spot-on, and I smiled, now thinking myself about some good ole’ fried okra! Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by difficulty with social interaction and communication, and with restricted or repetitive patterns of thought and behavior. The Conners learned of Katelyn’s autism diagnosis when she was just two years old, and they knew the journey ahead would require lots of love, patience, and care. “We decided to move back to my homeplace, Pirate’s Wood in Yulee, to give KK a village of family support with her grandparents, aunts, and uncles as neighbors” says Mandy. 47 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Little did the Conners know that their decision to come home would unlock many doors, not just for Katelyn but for their entire family and community. “As a child, I remember riding a golf cart through the dirt roads of old Yulee with my Uncle Cecil, who was mentally challenged and found happiness and independence driving his golf cart, the very first cart in Pirate’s Wood. After we moved back, KK was having a difficult time adjusting, screaming for hours and biting to express her anger. The only way to calm her was a golf cart ride, which always seemed to soothe her! “This discovery led my dad to purchase a golf cart, which he named ‘KK’s Go-Go’.” And just like her great Uncle Cecil, the golf cart became one of her favorite places to be, and even today, when she signs, ‘Go,’ the family loads up for a ride. As Mandy came to know other families with loved ones navigating autism, she realized the critical need for local services continued on next page

and support. “Families need a lot – iPads with communication apps like KK’s, funds to repair those same iPads that are thrown in frustration, and even dollars for summer camps and therapy. We wanted to create a fundraising event that was ‘us,’ and a golf cart poker run seemed perfect,” says Mandy. The inaugural ride in 2013 had 34 golf carts. Seven years later, the annual Katelyn’s Ride for Autism returns this month on September 26 in Pirate’s Wood, right where it started. But instead of 34 golf carts, this year there will be over 200 carts enjoying the fun, competing for cash prizes and a golf cart raffle giveaway! Originally scheduled for April, the ride was postponed until September because of the Covid-19 virus. With a mission to create acceptance, awareness, safety, and support for special needs families in Northeast Florida, the proceeds help to advance the goal of providing safety decals for vehicles, weighted blankets (used for sensory integration), and grants to families. Additionally, Katelyn’s Ride helps to fund monthly Parent 2 Parent meetings that offer mothers and fathers the resources, training, and support they need to continue their journeys. “Some of our flagship work are the sensory events we host for families like ours, including a trip to Conner’s A-Maize-ing Acres, a water day at St. Mary’s Aquatic Center, movie events, and family cookouts. There is so much connection when we get the families together and they don’t have to worry about ‘what might happen’ or about their child’s behavior. We are all on the same walk of life, and it’s particularly evident when you see the siblings bond with each other.” Through the generous support of family, friends, and the community, Katelyn’s Ride continues to grow, and so does the impact of Northeast Florida Advocates for Autism and Related Disabilities’ work. The Conners are overwhelmingly grateful to everyone who supports this important mission. To learn more about Katelyn’s Ride for Autism and to get involved, visit www.katelynsride.com.

Penta “Butterfly Deep Rose”

precious pentas September is a great month for planting, so add fall color to your garden with favorites like the butterfly-attracting Penta or Thyrallis, or try herbs like Parsley and Thyme. BY BETTY MORRELL

H

ere we are in September, which is one of my favorite months since it is when the Florida Growers Association has their annual trade show. Unfortunately, I just received an email stating that it has been cancelled until 2021 because of the Covid virus. I’ll contact the association to see what they have in store for us for this year, but in the meantime, we can plant our gardens with a favorite old standby. Pentas are a wonderful butterflyattracting perennial. They provide an easy source of nearly year- round color in semi-shaded spots. They can also be grown in full sun, but they will need to be watered more often. Pentas are spreading, multi-stemmed plants that grow 2 to 3 feet tall. Their leaves are long, somewhat hairy ovals with stems topped by four-inch wide clusters of small star-shaped flowers in white, pink, lilac, and red, with white centers. Remove the dead flowers for a long blooming season. Feed these plants monthly in summer with Miracle-Gro, Peters Solution, Milrganite, or a 10-10-10 fertilizer. They are a joy to have in the garden.

TIP OF T HE M O N T H Fall and winter plants will arrive at your nursery soon. Hold off buying those enticing Mums until October, then pick ones in tight bud, as they will last longer.

September is a wonderful month of the year for planting. Even though it is still a little warm, the nights are cooler, and planting in the evening gives the plants a chance to settle in before the heat of the day. While thinking of something colorful for the fall, Thyrallis (aka Showers of Gold) came to mind. I love this evergreen compact shrub, with its beautiful golden yellow flowers that are abundant during the late summer and fall months. It can grow to 9 feet in height, is pest-free, and compliments other shrubs with color, such as Plumbago. The blueand-yellow combination is striking. Butterflies also enjoy these bushes. As for the pretty Plumbago, it is best to prune it in spring, but you can prune it anytime. That is the only care

they need. They will stay green all year round. If they do get bitten by a frost, they will die down, but pop right back up in spring. For those of you who like fresh tomatoes and herbs, now is a good time to purchase tomato and pepper plants that are a good size for planting. They will bear fruit right into Christmas (in holiday colors of red and green). This is also a good time to plant herbs like parsley, rosemary, sage, and thyme. Because of the virus, some gardeners have incorporated veggie plants in and around their flower gardens, which will supply fresh vegetables as well as color and greenery. Carrot tops blend nicely with onions, spinach, mustard greens, cabbage, radishes, collards, and peas. For flower gardens, remember that hummingbirds love salvias and sages, which bloom in the fall. Many of the dark purple, orange, yellow, white, and red varieties are irresistible to those darling little wing-flappers. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

“I

’m pretty sure I missed my calling,” whispers Kacie Dickinson, as she looks at her almost-sleeping baby girl from the corner chair of her brand-new home in Amelia Island Plantation. “I know I would have made it as an architect!” After settling Ramsey for a nap in the sweet nursery off the main living space of their new abode, Kacie quietly tiptoes away. Just to the right of the nursery is a petite playroom, adorned with colorful artwork, shelves of books and special collectibles, an art table, and, of course, bins full of fun things to play with. While enjoying the whimsy of this imaginative 53 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

space, I quickly notice the attention to detail in the design, with slider doors ready hide the play space and formalize the home for entertaining when needed. It is just this attention to detail that is found in every nook and cranny of the Dickinsons’ home. “I designed this space for us,” Kacie confirms. “What we want, need, what has worked, and what we can improve on are all in the strategy.” This is not the Dickinson family’s first adventure in home planning. Originally from Atlanta, Kacie grew up vacationing on Hilton Head Island at Sea Pines, which if you’ve ever visited,

will remind you a lot of our own Amelia Island. “The design of the architecture blending with the nature speaks to me, and that is what I sought to achieve in this home,” says Kacie. In years past, the Dickinsons modified a home design in Amelia Park, before drawing from scratch a plan they built in Brady Point Preserve. But this current home presented a whole new challenge and opportunity for the couple, with its pie-shaped property backing up to the miles of bike trails running to and from the coastline. “I stayed up late drawing, measuring, and dreaming of a monochromatic exterior that would echo the nature,” shares Kacie. Moreover, she studied the positioning of the lot to maximize the

Bottom right: In the evenings, the backyard is shaded, one more intentional design element, which offers lovely outdoor dining for the family on the table Brad handmade for the new patio.

his grandfather’s passion. When asked who built these shelves, this table, or chose this décor, the answer was always, “We did!” “I used to think I was skilled,” laughs Kacie. “But now Brad has the fever!” If you take a peek at the couple’s outdoor living area, you will not argue. Crowning the space is a dining table that Bradley made himself. Another notable detail is the outdoor lighting, which is vertical, just like on historic Hilton Head. And the charming kitchen is perfect for the family. “I had a certain amount of stone to use, and I made it work,” says Kacie. The result is stunning, complete with a butler’s pantry the family will never again build without. “We use it constantly!” Another crucial detail is that the kitchen features a side-by-side refrigerator, and in the pantry is a full-size freezer. Highland Cabinetry helped with the kitchen design, and accents throughout the home were found at The Plantation Shop, as well as pieces from Coastal Cottage. “We’ve had so much fun with this family-first design, it’s going to be hard to leave this home one day,” say Kacie and Bradley. But if you’ve met Kacie, you know she can’t be far from her sketchbook, and we can’t wait to see where her imagination may lead the family next. 58 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

ew restaurants in downtown Fernandina Beach are as wellappointed, with a menu as sophisticated and an ambiance as inviting, as Burlingame. Two years ago, I had the opportunity to accompany a young culinary student into the kitchen at Burlingame to see how the magic is made. On this night, I met the same student and her mother at the restaurant to send her off to the finest culinary school in the country, the prestigious Culinary Institute of America. Kendall Kratky is on her way to accomplishing great things. She was an integral part of the competition culinary team from Fernandina Beach High School, was awarded a

Certificate of Achievement Certification from the National Restaurant Association, and will begin her studies at the CIA in September, along with fellow FBHS and Burlingame alumnus Jonah Schwend. One of the things I love about Burlingame is the aesthetic. It’s as though Marie Kondo came through and made sure everything was in its proper place each night. Walking into the kitchen, nothing changes. For tonight’s occasion, co-owner and chef Chad Livingston organized a prix fixe menu. Chef 60 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Chad has been an excellent mentor for Kendall; he too is a Fernandina Beach High graduate and CIA alum. As our meal began, we were served scratch-made sourdough bread with an herbed compound butter, and soon our table was overflowing with plates as several servers surrounded us, each with full hands. Before us was a bowl of fried okra, a Lincoln log tower of hand-cut steak frites, charred octopus, sea scallops, and spinach pasta with a poached egg and fresh parmesan. The okra is from Epperson Farms, and it was perfectly seasoned, battered, and fried golden brown and delicious, served with a side of spicy aioli. The Charred Octopus came served with crispy potatoes, shashito peppers, orange supremes, and a house-made aioli. The octopus was flavorful and remarkably tender, the peppers giving a smoky freshness to the dish, while the oranges made for a refreshingly cool addition. Each part of the dish was uniquely delicious, but getting a little of each flavor in a bite made for quite an experience. Our last appetizer was so simple it was amazing. The house-made pasta is tossed in a spinach pesto and served with rendered bacon. By itself it would be delicious, but it is not by itself. The pasta is topped with an egg, which has been poached sous vide-style to a perfect softness, and the luscious yolk cascades over the delicate pasta flecked with green, all of it mounded with freshly feather-grated parmesan cheese. For our entrée, we split the Diver Scallops. The scallops were perfectly seared and presented in a pool of the most delicious creamed corn you will ever eat; coupled with their sweet and tart tomato confit. The dish is a sure crowd-pleaser. To close the evening out, Chef Chad and company brought out a slice of Chocolate Tart, Pecan Pie, and a deconstructed Lemon Meringue. All three are showstoppers, and we passed them around the table so that we could all enjoy. As we left, Kendall bid farewell to her restaurant family, and we all vowed to return again soon. Burlingame is located at 20 South 5th Street. Call for reservations as seating is limited.

PERFECT AUTUMN POT ROAST Ingredients 4-5 lb. chuck roast, tied with string Olive oil Flour seasoned with salt and pepper 3 peeled and chopped carrots ½ peeled and chopped butternut squash (small) 4 stalks celery, chopped 2 medium onions, chopped 6 cloves garlic, chopped 2 cups good red wine 1 cup beef stock 1 beef bouillon cube 3 sprigs fresh thyme 1 sprig fresh rosemary 28-oz. can plum tomatoes Salt and pepper Kitchen Bouquet Browning Sauce

the perfect autumn

p roast BY KAREN MILLER

I

t may not feel like autumn here in Fernandina Beach, but cooler weather is just around the corner! Although it’s best we avoid crowds and house parties these days, we still have families to feed. This is a great time to learn new techniques in the kitchen, and serve comfort foods to the ones we love. Pot roast is a favorite in our family, and recently I learned a new technique for making the best pot roast I’ve ever eaten. The key is in the gravy, which is

made by pureeing half of the vegetables in a blender or food processor, rather than creating a roux and mixing it into the pan juices. The gravy has a wonderful balance of salt and sweet, and it’s velvety on the tongue. A drop or two of Kitchen Bouquet will give the gravy a dark, rich hue. This pot roast is best served with mashed potatoes, green beans, and salad. Warm apple crisp with vanilla ice cream would make an excellent ending to your perfect autumn pot roast dinner!

76 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

SEPTEMBER 2020

Preparation Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Dredge pot roast in seasoned flour and sear in a large oven-safe pot with about 2 tablespoons olive oil. Make sure all sides have browned nicely, then remove from the pot and set aside. Add more olive oil to the pot, then add the carrots, squash, onions, celery, garlic, 1 tablespoon salt, and 1 ½ teaspoons pepper and cook over medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until tender but not browned. Add the wine and bring to a boil. Add the tomatoes, beef stock, bouillon cube, 2 teaspoons salt, and 1 teaspoon pepper. Tie the thyme and rosemary together with kitchen string and add to the pot. Put the roast back into the pot, bring to a boil, and cover. Place in the oven for 2 ½ hours, until the meat is fork tender or about 160 degrees internally. (Turn the heat down to 250 degrees after about an hour to keep the sauce at a simmer.) Remove pot from the oven and carefully transfer the meat to a cutting board. Discard the bundle of herbs. Place half of the sauce and veggies in a blender or food processor and puree. Be careful, it’s hot! Return the pureed sauce to the pot and simmer gently. Taste and adjust the seasoning. If the gravy isn’t as thick as you’d like it, you can mash 1 tablespoon butter with 2 tablespoons flour, and stir into the gravy. Add a few drops of Kitchen Bouquet and stir. When you are pleased with your gravy, slice the pot roast and serve on a plate with the sauce poured over the top, with extra gravy in a bowl to be served at table.
