September brings the beginning of fall, and that always means the start of some cooler weather here in northeast Florida. Labor Day is always a milestone on the calendar, but it hasn’t been quite the same since we moved to Florida years ago because it no longer distinctly separates the summer from the start of the school year. Of course, my kids don’t know what I’m talking about because they are Floridians through-and-through, and school has always started for them in mid-August. But regardless of when summer officially ends, the transition to fall always means cooler weather and the return of schedules and regular routines. Here on Amelia Island, another harbinger of fall for me is the return of the Amelia Island Jazz Festival. Now in its 18th season, the Amelia Island Jazz Festival is a swingin’ affair led by artistic director and festival founder Les DeMerle, the renowned drummer and bandleader, and his wife, vocalist Bonnie Eisele. DeMerle, who began his career with jazz legends Lionel Hampton and Harry James, continues to bring the best jazz musicians in the world to Amelia Island. Following appearances at past festivals by jazz giants such as David Sanborn, Ramsey Lewis, Spyro Gira, and Larry Coryell, DeMerle has put together another outstanding line-up this year, headlined by legendary jazz clarinetist and saxophonist Ken Peplowski and renowned vocalist and guitarist John Pizzarelli and his trio. Both shows will be in the ballroom of the new Springhill Suites at Main Beach. The festival features a full week of shows and events, beginning with a free Sunday afternoon concert in Amelia Park featuring the Nassau Community Band led by Marc Dickman, the Yulee High School Jazz Band directed by Amos Walker, and UNF JE2 directed by Dennis Marks. The fun continues with a unique Jazz & Wine Tasting at Springhill Suites featuring multi-instrumentalist Dr. Bill Prince, the Jump, Jive, and Wail/ Swing Night Concert & Dance featuring the Dynamic Les DeMerle Little Big Band with Bonnie Eisele at Sadler Ranch, and the popular Latin Jazz Night and Dance with the award-winning Trio Caliente in its usual Thursday night spot, also at Sadler Ranch. Additionally, following the headliner performances Friday and Saturday nights, don’t miss the fun at the festival’s Late Night Jams, held this year at Mocama Beer Company. It’s sure to be another great week of music! Also in this issue, we take a look at the work of a group called Amelia Forever, which is working to preserve Amelia Island’s natural beauty, including the Little NaNa dune in American Beach; celebrate the island’s Spanish roots with the Fiesta de Santa Maria, which returns this month sponsored in part by the Amelia Island Museum of History; enjoy a “Backyard Adventure” with Karen Miller aboard a catboat named the Gato Feliz; and much, much more. T
he Amelia Island Jazz Festival provides a rich, diverse cultural experience to the Amelia Island area by exposing thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds to the sounds, excitement, and vitality of great jazz. The Festival presents world-class jazz in many styles, including swing, bebop, Dixieland, big band, Latin, and contemporary. During the week-long festival, held in October each year, music is performed by jazz greats as well as fresh, up-and-coming young talent. Performances are staged in several venues around Amelia Island, offering fresh, jazz-centric settings. The goal of the Amelia Island Jazz Festival is to help preserve the American art form, jazz, by increasing the exposure and awareness of the music genre to the general public. This year’s AIJF will be held from October 3 through October 10, with dozens of your favorite jazz artists and some brand-new venues. The Festival began in 2001 when drummer Les DeMerle and his wife, vocalist Bonnie Eisele, fulfilled their lifetime dream of creating a diversified jazz festival on Amelia Island. The couple produced the festival for three years prior to its incorporation as a non-profit 501(c)3 tax exempt organization. With support from the community and their devoted volunteers and sponsors, the Festival has grown and thrived. DeMerle launched his career as drummer with Lionel Hampton, the jazz vibraphone great, while still in high school at age 16. He then toured for 12 years with jazz trumpet

master Harry James and recorded three albums with him, including the Grammy Award-winning King James Version. DeMerle’s own jazz/rock/fusion band, Transfusion, recorded five award-winning LPs. He has toured with Manhattan Transfer and appeared with such musical greats as Lou Rawls, Sammy Davis, Jr., Frank Sinatra, Mel Tormé, and Joe Williams. A resident of Amelia Island since 1991, Les continues to perform at concerts, festivals and jazz cruises with his trio, quartet, and the Dynamic Les DeMerle Big Band Orchestra featuring Bonnie Eisele, which has recorded 14 CDs, including their new recording, Hot Night In Venice, an Origin Records release. Eisele is the featured vocalist with the Dynamic Les DeMerle Band. She has appeared with the band on numerous jazz cruises and at many popular jazz clubs, including Somerset’s in Singapore, City Jazz in Orlando, The Jazz Corner in Hilton Head, and Arturo Sandoval’s in Miami. She also has toured the U.S. and Europe with the Chicago Free Street Theater, an original musical theater and dance group. Bonnie’s diverse performing experience includes singing at the Chicago Playboy Club, Chicago Fest, Drury Lane Theater, and Miami’s Fontainebleau Resort. She studied music and dance in Brazil on a Rotary Foundation Graduate Fellowship. 14 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
AMELIA ISLAND JAZZ FESTIVAL SUPPORTS MUSIC EDUCATION The Amelia Island Jazz Festival is much more than music. Through the Festival, DeMerle and Eisele offer education and scholarship programs to expose young people to the art of jazz, while motivating more students to pursue jazz as a musical endeavor. Featuring workshops led by master musicians for elementary school, middle school, and high school students, more than 2,000 area students attend this program each year. These educational programs culminate in the Amelia Island Jazz Festival Scholarship, a financial award presented to deserving high school musicians who demonstrate strong potential to perform jazz at the collegiate level. “This year’s winner is Wyatt Bruno, a student from Jacksonville’s Douglas Anderson School for the Arts,” says DeMerle. “He’s an incredibly talented trumpet player, who is studying music at the University of North Florida this year.”

TRINITY LOVE HOBLIT FOUNDATION GALA RETURNS ON SEPTEMBER 25 On September 25, the Trinity Love Hoblit Foundation presents its fifth annual Gala at Amelia Island’s newest boutique hotel, the Courtyard Amelia Island. The event includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, and dancing to entertainment by top recording artists, all in support of the fight against brain aneurysms and stroke. Trinity Hoblit was born with a rare form of primordial dwarfism. Although small in stature, she had an enormous spirit that captured the hearts of everyone she met. At age nine, Trinity was diagnosed with multiple brain aneurysms. She passed away on June 30, 2015 at age 14. Trinity was an advocate of organ donation, and with her family’s support, she gave life to three donor recipients after her death. These three recipients are alive today as a result of Trinity and her family’s support, and the Hoblits continue to bless others through the Foundation. The Gala will feature music by multiple Grammy Award-winning artist Dave Yaden, a virtuosic piano player who has written and performed with Lady Antebellum, One Republic, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, and many others. ISLAND HOP CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL COMES TO FERNANDINA BEACH
CARS AND CANNONS AT FORT CLINCH STATE PARK ON SEPTEMBER 25 Did you ever imagine vintage cars inside historic Fort Clinch State Park? Come and enjoy exactly that on September 25 at Cars & Cannons, the only car show anywhere inside an historic fort! This “just for fun” show will boast a 1952 Bentley, a 1923 Ford T-Bucket Hot Rod, and several 1960’s and 1970’s MG’s and Triumphs, as well as muscle cars from the 1960’s. Most of the cars on display are local, the same hot rods you sometimes see cruising the streets on special occasions. If you are interested in attending, you can purchase tickets the day of the show—rain or shine—at the entrance to Ft. Clinch. Admittance is $6 per vehicle and an additional $2.50 per individual. f the name “Janet Rogers” is familiar to you, it’s because Janet has owned A Janet Lynne Salon & Spa, located at 2134 Sadler Square, since 2002. In 2016, Janet began collecting furniture to use in remodeling her salon and realized she would need to renovate every piece. “I started watching videos and learning how to makeover furniture,” says Janet. “After I realized I had a talent for that, I started flipping furniture, selling it on Facebook Marketplace. I always loved visiting antique malls, so with my husband’s encouragement, I decided to rent a space at a local antique shop, where I could put my furniture and thrifted items.” Janet’s favorite thing to do is to find furniture on the side of the road, and her husband often comes home with pieces for her to renovate, too. “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!” she laughs. “I was selling so many items that I eventually decided to have my own shop, in addition to my salon.” When space was available at Sadler Square, right next to her salon, Janet knew the timing was perfect. She opened Island Vintage
Market in April of this year. With the help of her sister, Lori, her daughter, Holly, and numerous vendors, artists, and consigners, Janet’s new shop reflects her personality and love for treasures. “I knew I wanted to have vendors, but I also wanted it to be more of a boutique-style vintage market and not another antique mall,” says Janet. “That’s where my dream to offer local artists and vintage collectors a space to sell their items came together. I had a vision of what I wanted, and it’s better that I ever imagined!” All of Janet’s merchandise is crafted by local artists and made in the USA. Each vendor was carefully chosen for their unique talent. In addition to her boutique, niche artists, and vendors, Janet also teaches workshops on how to paint and refinish furniture. “I love this new business venture,” says Janet. “I think my shop makes people smile!” Island Vintage Market is located at 2136 Sadler Road in the Salder Square Shopping Center. Linda is originally from Michigan and Bill is from Massachusetts, but they both feel at home here on Amelia Island. “My career in radio and advertising took us all over the place before we landed in Orlando. We love Amelia Island, so we thought it would be a great place to open a second store. Fernandina Beach has such a good vibe. The local folks are so friendly and welcoming, and the visitors are all happy to be here. It’s a great laid-back atmosphere. Plus, you can’t beat the natural beauty.” The Spice & Tea Exchange offers more than 60 different loose-leaf teas and more than 85 handcrafted seasonings, made in-store daily. “Holiday and corporate gifting is a specialty,” says Linda. “We just love turning folks on to healthy gift-giving ideas!” When they aren’t busy at the store, Bill and Linda love to bike and comb the beach. “Linda is a runner and we both love cycling, but most of all, we both love to cook and drink tea,” Bill laughs. They also have two cats: Mooch, who is seventeen years old, and Baby Girl, who is seven, both of whom are living with their son, Harrison, in Winter Springs, Florida while they get settled here. riginally from Augusta, Georgia, Kam and Brian Kyzer have loved Amelia Island for decades. In October 2020, they opened the Fernandina Beach location of Watanut, a family-owned and operated gourmet nut and cookie company. “We bought a condo here two years ago, and Brian and I split our time between Amelia Island and Augusta so our youngest son, who is a high school senior, always has a parent present. The last two years have been a little hectic, but we believe it will be worth it,” says Kam. “Our Augusta location has been in business almost ten years, and we’re so grateful for the opportunity to grow and be a part of Amelia Island’s community.” “Everyone here is so friendly, and I love meeting all the visitors, learning about where they’re from and what brought them to the island. A committee of the North Florida Land Trust, Amelia Forever is working with the City of Fernandina Beach and local conservation groups to preserve Amelia’s natural beauty. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTOS BY SHERRY CARTER
A
melia Island is a stunning seaside community that invokes pride in residents and visitors alike for its unique combination of natural and historic features. Boasting an incredible tree canopy, proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, and the calming marshes along the Intracoastal Waterway, as well as a thriving historic center and deep cultural heritage, Amelia Island is a slice of paradise. Yet with all the wonders Amelia Island provides, many of its natural and historic landscapes are disappearing. Amelia Island resident Pam Hart, who used to live in Waycross, Georgia, noticed the changes and the development happening on the Left to right: Board members Lily Scheetz, Cynthia Jones Jackson, Jane Everts and Pam Hart. island as she visited year after year. Ironically, Hart served on the Waycross and Ware County Development Authority, which was trying to bring in more businesses and development into that raise awareness about land conservation among local residents part of Georgia. Hart decided to get involved with the North Florida Land Beach, three parcels of land adjacent to the ecologically significant Trust, chairing its newest committee called Amelia Forever, Egans Creek Greenway. “The Greenway is one of my favorite which purchases or receives donations of land and conservation places on Amelia Island,” says Hart. “Preserving our natural spaces easements, as well as facilitating conservation transactions for is so important right now. If we don’t do it, it will be lost forever.” Thanks to the interest of residents in pursuing conservation public agencies. with Amelia Tree Conservancy, the City of Fernandina Beach, and Nassau County, the effort burgeoned into a community-wide effort to protect the island’s precious natural resources. “Amelia Forever’s Board is a very hardworking, accomplished group of people, who are now turning their talents to helping preserve the quality of life on Amelia,” says Hart. The current goal of the Amelia Forever campaign is to preserve Little NaNa Dune, a part of the tallest dune in Florida and located within the historic Black community of American Beach. The preservation of Little NaNa Dune supports a longstanding vision to protect the natural integrity of the area championed by the late MaVynee Betsch, an American environmentalist affectionately called “The Beach Lady.” Ms. Betsch lived in American Beach, where she remained an activist for its preservation until she died in September 2005. In preserving Little NaNa Dune, NFLT joins the Friends of American Beach, the American Beach and greater Amelia Island communities, and friends and family of MaVynee Betsch to carry forward her legacy of protecting this special place. “The purchase of Little NaNa Dune is vital to that area of the island,” says Hart. “Last year, we managed to hold two fundraisers, which allowed us to purchase a 3-acre parcel. We held a trolley tour featuring Eve Jones narrating the historical significance of the area, along with Chad Scott discussing the ecological part of it, followed by a jazz dinner for participants. Our Jazz’N to Save Little Nana task force was led by Cynthia Jones Jackson.” Amelia Forever had planned another event for this month, but decided to cancel because of the latest Covid-19 outbreak, but Hart and her committee members still need to get the word out and raise money to buy more land. Santa Maria With food vendors and stories to share, the Fiesta de Santa Maria hosted by the Amelia Island Museum of History and Fernandina Farmers Market returns this month. BY MANDY HAYNES • PHOTOS BY SHERRY CARTER
O
n Saturday, September 18, the Amelia Island Museum of History is hosting its third annual Fiesta de Santa Maria. The festival, in conjunction with the Fernandina Farmer’s Market, runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Pineland Bank parking lot on Centre Street. The festival will celebrate Amelia Island’s Spanish roots with performances by Royal Amelia Dance Academy and Ballroom on Amelia as well as live Caribbean and Flamenco music by Dennis Fermín. Vendors will be offering delicious food, and stories will be shared to raise awareness of Fernandina Beach’s colorful and interesting history. One tale that’s sure to be told is the story of Cuban revolutionary José Martí, who stayed at the Florida House Inn in the spring of 1893. Martí, a writer, poet, diplomat, painter, and journalist, was planning an invasion of his native Cuba to free it from Spanish rule and he amassed his ships in the Fernandina harbor. In addition to the Fiesta de Santa Maria, the Amelia Island Museum of History will present a one-of-a-kind Cuban Art Exhibit from Baracoa, Cuba’s oldest city, which is connected historically to Fernandina Beach. Why art from Baracoa? Well, I’m glad you asked because it’s a fantastic story! I met with Dr. Berta Isabel Arias at the 41 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
Florida House Inn because I thought it would be a great place for a photograph. I also thought it would be a great place for a glass of lemonade and a quick chat about Fiesta de Santa Maria, but once Berta started talking about the upcoming art exhibit, I forgot all about the lemonade! “While I was in Baracoa a few years ago doing research, I was a celebrity of sorts because I live in Fernandina. Fernandina is revered as the city where José Martí, Cuba’s hero during the Spanish American War, put together his Fernandina Plan and secured arms and supplies destined to land in the eastern part of Cuba to support the fight for independence from Spain. “On my trip to Cuba, I met so many talented artists. They became friends, and I’m excited and honored to share their stories along with their art with everyone here in Fernandina Beach. On September 17, I’ll be giving a lecture at the Museum of History that will address Fernandina’s unique connection to Baracoa, as well as sharing some beautiful art,” says Berta. Given the current state of affairs between Cuba and the U.S., it is impossible to obtain original pieces of art from Baracoa, but that didn’t stop Berta. Working with Museum staff, she came up with the idea of creating posters of their art to display. The Exhibit of posters consists of 34 original 2-D continued on next page

and 3-D works of art that showcase a diversity of themes and styles. Twenty-one Cuban artists overcame many obstacles to make this show happen. In Cuba, there is no reliable Internet or access to the latest smart phone to take photos of your work. In order to take the high-resolution photographs needed for the posters, the artists shared one camera. And with the gasoline shortage in Cuba, that meant travelling by foot or bicycle from house to house to get the photographs. And finding reliable Internet service to get those files to Berta was another issue. But despite those hurdles, the artists remain very excited about the project. “Local Fernandina Beach artists have volunteered to judge and award monetary prizes from donations to their top choices. This will mean so much to the artists living in Baracoa, who have no way to share their work outside of Cuba. The exhibit will continue at the museum through November,” says Berta. There will be a Donor Reception and Pre-Opening Cuba Art Exhibit on Friday, September 17 at the Amelia Island Museum of History from 4:00 to 5:45p.m., followed by “The FernandinaCuba Connection” lecture by Dr. Berta Isabel Arias. The Cuba Art Exhibit will be on display at the Museum from September 17 through November 30.

eptember brings wishful dreaming of fall and the many things we can plant for the new season. They say October is the beginning of the planting season in Florida, so let’s get ready! First, I had a question about Perennial Peanut, where it would grow best and whether it is a good groundcover. Yes, yes, yes. An awesome, tough little plant, it survives in our hot summer heat and sandy soil. It is a versatile groundcover that blooms all summer with happy little golden flowers. This groundcover is effective on sites with erosion problems, as the rhizomes grow to form a mat that helps keep the soil in place. Perennial Peanut can also be used as a lawn substitute and can be mowed without damage to the plants. It should be planted as a lawn where there is little foot traffic. When using it as a groundcover, use metal or fiberglass edging along the landscape beds to stop it from jumping into adjacent areas. Water well when first planted, and once established, it will serve you well. It is resistant to nematodes, pathogens, and drought, and requires

very little fertilizer. Perennial Peanut likes full sun, but tolerates some shade. If you want to liven up some boring shrubs, try the dramatic “Miss Scarlett” Illicium, with its fiery red, star-shaped 2-inch flowers with buttery yellow eyes that rise above the foliage in mid-spring and are on display for 4 to 6 weeks. The green foliage emerges chartreuse in spring, and the glossy evergreen narrow leaves remain green through winter. It produces brown capsules in midsummer. When the leaves are crushed, they smell like anise, and the star-shaped seeds are similar to the culinary anise, bur these are toxic. This Southern Living plant has a compact growth habit and will reach 4 to

6 feet in height and 3 to 4 feet in width, filling out right to the ground. This hardy shrub does best in part-shade to shade. Apply a thick layer of mulch around the root zone to conserve soil moisture. Warning: this plant is toxic to humans and animals, so plant accordingly. Use in mass plantings, as hedges or screening, naturalize it, or plant in woodland garden. It can be grown in containers, but it will need more water. This is a fairly new PP24640 plant. I am heading to the Florida Growers Association trade show, and I’m so excited to take you all with me. We will explore the new plants, new products, ideas, tips, and hints beginning next month. Lastly, if you have Confederate or Carolina jasmine growing near your house, be sure to clip it off the building as the tendrils will pull off finishes like stucco. “W
hen you live in an upside-down home, it’s tricky,” laughs Lauren Templeton as she warmly welcomes a visitor at her downstairs front door. Lauren explains that the design of their beach house is the opposite from most other homes, with the ground floor featuring a playroom and office, bedrooms on the middle floor, and kitchen, dining, and family rooms on the top floor. Of course, this might be the perfect layout for a home that is one block from the ocean. That top floor is a great place to enjoy Atlantic coast sunrises, the afternoon sea breeze, and to hear the crash of the waves on the Amelia Island coastline. And

that is exactly what Lauren and Sebastian Templeton and their two daughters have been enjoying in their newly redesigned home. Many of you know Lauren through Amelia Art Studio, where she offers small group instruction in drawing, painting, ceramics, and mixed media. “In fact, it was art that brought me from my home in Washington, D.C. to Florida,” she says, explaining that she relocated to St. Augustine in 2005 when she joined an art gallery. As she and Sebastian spent time exploring Florida’s First Coast, they kept visiting Fernandina Beach. “The layers of history, natural beauty, low-key lifestyle, antique homes, and streets lined with oaks, there is just something special about Amelia Island.” The couple purchased a home downtown in 2008 before moving to their beach house in 2013. “We fell in love with life on the north end of the island,” Lauren shares. “We take our dogs on walks, visit with our neighbors, and of course, hit the beach.” While the Templetons were enjoying their new life, they also had a vision of a future redesign. “The home was great, but it was dark and dated, and we wanted more natural light.” When Lauren’s friend, Fe Lavino, shared that she was opening her 56 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

business, Lavino Home, with a specialty in transformative remodels, Lauren knew the time was right. “Fe is amazing. She’s from Brazil, has a past career as a lawyer, and she is a friend. We trusted her, and basically, we shared our vision with her, moved out, and she did the magic. We wanted a turnkey experience, and Fe handled every detail, from design to furniture installation,” explains Lauren. For Fe, this was a dream job. “The liberty the Templetons gave me to implement their vision of a coastal, timeless design that was functional for their children and dogs made this project so much fun,” she says. The Templetons and Fe partnered with John Dodd to help with the architectural redesign and Call Construction for the remodeling work. “Our goal was to open up the floor plan, bring in more natural light, and achieve a very organic feeling in the home,” says Fe. top-floor wall into slider doors to bring the outside in and extend the living space to the large lanai with its abundant outdoor dining space. In the kitchen, the design was altered to adjust and expand window positions to bring in the light, and a palate of textures, including natural stone, metal, and glass, were hand-picked with a nod to the surrounding nature. While the Templetons floor plan might still be a little unconventional, Lauren and Sebastian are all smiles about their redesigned home. “We couldn’t be prouder of our home,” the couple agreed. “The look and feel surpassed all our expectations, and we fully credit Lavino Home.”

ast week, I met a few friends for a celebratory dinner at Bar Zin. Between college degrees, professional accolades, successful surgeries, and new businesses, there was a lot to be happy about. Bar Zin is located in the Palmetto Walk Shopping Center on the south end of the island. Recently it’s gone through a series of upgrades that have ushered in a fresh look, new menu, a full bar, and an in-house wine shop. After ten years in business, owner Tim Seyda is refocusing on his original vision to provide exquisite tapas-style dining with an extensive wine list in a sophisticated but comfortable setting. Mission accomplished. We sat at a large banquette toward the back, which is where Amelia Island Wine Company is now settled in the library room, and where a free tasting was in full swing. We began the feast immediately. Strawberry Ricotta Bruschetta, Charcuterie, Crispy Brussel Sprouts, and Truffle Frites were served, and plates were everywhere. My business partner Josh was celebrating his newly acquired MPhil with a Vodka Collins, while his wife Laura toasted the launching of Personalized Performance, a facility designed to help with rehabilitation and physical wellness. Ken and wife Barb toasted his successful heart surgery and recovery. It was a happy moment in time made richer by great company and delicious food. The first round of tapas disappeared in a flash. The charcuterie changes nightly, but our selections were paired with ground mustard, honeycomb, and homemade pickles. It’s a perfect sharing starter for a small group. The strawberry bruschetta was delicious, but I concentrated my attention on the truffle fries and brussel sprouts. The hand-cut fries were golden brown and drizzled with truffle oil, seasoned liberally, and tossed with parmesan cheese. The brussel sprouts were equally delicious, delightfully crunchy and green. I felt proud of myself for having a few vegetables. I ordered a glass of Chardonnay from the Russian River in anticipation of my second course. Whenever mussels are available, I like to enjoy them. These were steamed perfectly in 62 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
a Sambuca-spiked broth that I finished like a restorative soup after I finished extracting the tender morsels of briny brilliance. They came with a pile of crisp pommes frites with truffle aioli, which I was happy to share, having already indulged in their greasy goodness in round one. Josh enjoyed the New York Strip special, which was served with creamy stone-ground polenta. Laura went with the always popular Tuna Crunch, yellow fin tuna in a panko crust with soba noodles and a sweet chili soy glaze, a Bar Zin staple. Barb won the prize for prettiest dinner with the Seared Scallops.
Another favorite of mine, the perfectly scallops were nestled atop a dollop of the most delicious wild mushroom risotto. Ken went old school with the Wagyu burger, despite needing it cooked well done for health reasons, it remained juicy and delicious, which is no small feat. The plates were beautifully presented, the portions perfect, and the evening divine. We finished our meals with a slice of chocolate cake and retired to take on new challenges in the future. Catboat Sail on the

J
eff Peterson built his first sailboat when he was a 12-year-old boy living in Maine. “It was a 9-foot catboat and only had one sail,” remembers Jeff. “The boat’s name was Punkin’ Seed, a take on its wide beam, typical of most catboats. There were small fleets of these boats all over New England, and we raced on the weekends. We learned a lot about small boat sailing back then!” Indeed, Jeff was born to sail, and spends many a weekend with his wife, Teen, and their family, sailing about Amelia and Cumberland islands. Imagine our excitement when they invited my husband, Troy, and I to join them on a sail down Egans Creek, then up the Amelia River. We don’t know much about sailing, but Jeff is a great teacher. Their boat, named Gato Feliz (Happy Cat) is an 18-foot Marshall Sanderling built in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. “She was built in 1971, making her a sweet 50-year-old beauty,” says Jeff. “Marshall has built over 750 Sanderlings. They’re very popular in New England, especially Cape Cod, where in many of the towns there are small fleets that race on the weekends. It’s not a high-performance boat, but a fun, family sailer!” No one really knows the origin of the word “catboat.” It’s said that it might be because the boat sails fleet as a cat. But more likely it’s because of the numerous cats that hang around the boats after they’ve come back from a fishing trip, looking for handouts. From the 1850s to the early 1900s, catboats were the dominant inshore boat on the New England coast, both for work and for pleasure. They were used for fishing and 76 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
coastal transportation. Their popularity eventually declined in the commercial world, where they were eventually replaced by motorized boats. Teen and Jeff acquired Gato Feliz from a friend, whose father had brought it down from New Jersey. The former owner didn’t use it much as he had expected, and as Jeff had helped him with some maintenance, he came to Teen and Jeff’s house one day and said, “She’s yours!” Teen and Jeff lived in Ecuador for 12-years, where they learned Spanish. They felt the name Gato Feliz, captured both the personality of the boat and the fun they had sailing her. They fixed her up a bit through the years and have shared their sailing trips with numerous friends on Amelia Island. Our time on the water with Gato Feliz was exhilarating, with perfect wind and Jeff’s expertise. He even let Troy take over the tiller, which controls the rudder, giving him an onshore landmark as a visual heading. Something we didn’t realize at the time, was that this would be one of Gato Feliz’s last sail with the Petersons. The couple decided to downsize, selling their large home on the marsh, and buying a smaller home with less maintenance so they could spend more time in Maine. “We decided to sell Gato Feliz to a man who took her up to Beaufort, South Carolina, where she will join a fleet of five other Sanderlings for weekend racing and general sailing fun,” says Jeff. “We will miss her, but she will be put to good use, doing what she does best!”
