Everyone understands that at a certain age in life—earlier for some perhaps, later for others—we start sprinkling our conversation with talk about the state of our health. As we get older, we naturally start reflecting on our health a little more. Aches and pains, problems with our teeth or gums, or pain in the joints inevitably begin to enter our conversations. Once we start focusing more of our attention on maintaining good health for ourselves into the future, we realize that a vital part of the long-term foundation of good health involves establishing good habits in the present. Things change, and our bodies change as we get older. Soon we realize that our usual diet, which has kept us going for years, is now making it tougher to maintain a healthy weight, and an always busy schedule—filled with work, family, and kids’ activities—can make regular exercise a challenge. Lasting good health depends on day-to-day attention, not just on treating problems. Healthy choices mean healthy living. The good habits we develop provide a vital foundation for good health later in life. Things taken for granted in our youth, like a good night’s sleep, plenty of energy, and physical strength require more of our attention as the years go by. That’s why each year, we present the October Amelia Islander Magazine as a “Health & Wellness” special issue to highlight important issues in maintaining good health. On Amelia Island and in Nassau County, we are blessed with outstanding medical professionals and essential healthcare services close to home, including Baptist Medical Center Nassau and healthcare providers in Jacksonville. The steady growth in our local medical facilities that means an increasing number of therapies, treatments, and surgeries can be obtained here, making it easier on us and our families. In this issue, we have asked some of Amelia Island’s local professionals to share their expertise with us, providing simple and effective strategies to help us maintain lifelong good health. Many thanks to the doctors and specialists who took the time to write the articles presented here. Elsewhere in this issue, we look at Southern Living’s 2019 Idea House, which just happens to be located here on Crane Island, where a beautiful community attentive to the island’s history and natural environment is taking shape; check in with Richard Germano and his daughter, Holly, who are celebrating The Crab Trap’s 40th anniversary serving fresh local seafood in downtown Fernandina Beach; enjoy a “Fernandina Faces” from Dickie Anderson on the Oliver family, a close family who’ve had succeeding generations drawn back to the island; present an “Backyard Adventure” with the Amelia Boat Club; and much more.

IS IT TIME FOR YOUR ANNUAL MAMMOGRAM? BY TIFFANI PEREZ AND LAURA BROWN
I
f you’re getting ready for your annual mammogram, you may have heard the term “3D mammogram,” which is different from a traditional 2D mammogram. But what sets them apart? “3D mammography is quickly becoming the standard of care for breast cancer screening,” says Jenny Kingery, Associate Director of Imaging at Baptist Nassau, which began offering 3D mammography last summer. “This type of imaging makes it easier to see the layers of breast tissue, allowing for better cancer detection.” Traditional 2D mammograms take one picture across the entire breast, in two directions: top to bottom and side to side. Unclear or suspicious findings from 2D views can increase the need for additional imaging and also lead to more false-positives. 3D mammography is designed to overcome these limitations. 3D imaging technology moves in an arc around the breast to take X-ray pictures from many angles in seconds.

A computer quickly assembles the pictures to produce clear, highly focused 3D images. This allows the radiologist to view the entire breast, layer by layer, for a more accurate screening. To better understand how it works, picture a layer cake. If you look at the top of the unsliced cake, it’s a fairly flat, twodimensional circle. That’s a 2D mammogram—you can see the cake and the frosting, but fine details, like the flecks of chocolate and sprinkles inside the cake, are hidden from view. If you slice the cake and look inside, you can see the layers of icing and the mix of flavors. And if you grab another slice, you’ll see additional details. No two slices are quite the same. 3D mammograms take this approach, presenting different views of the breast in each layer. “The process is basically the same as what you experience with a traditional 2D mammogram, but the results are more accurate,” says Kingery. Tiffani Perez is Imaging Manager at the Hill Breast Center and Laura Brown is Clinical Programs Manager Women’s Services at Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center. To make an appointment for a 3D mammogram at Baptist Nassau, call (904) 202-2222. Same-day or next-day appointments are available.
LASER THERAPY IN DENTISTRY BY LAURIE A. KITSON, DMD
Y
ou may start to hear more about the use of lasers in dentistry at your next dental check-up. Lasers have been used in medicine for years by medical specialists like the Ophthalmologist, Dermatologist, and Plastic Surgeon. Lasers are now being used in dentistry to diagnose tooth decay, cure tooth-colored fillings, remove tissue lesions, remove early tooth decay, and initiate healing of bacterial or viral infections. Although various dental lasers have been used and around for years, a procedure called LANAP, or Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, is becoming more accepted by both the dental profession and the general public. LANAP is a patented periodontal treatment, cleared by the FDA in 2004. In 2016, the FDA granted this procedure a “true tissue and bone regeneration” procedure. The procedure is done with a special instrument called the PerioLase MVP laser. This laser operates at a specific wavelength that attacks the bacteria that contribute to gum disease while leaving healthy tissue intact. A tiny fiber about the width of three human hair is inserted between the gum tissue and teeth, where it targets and destroys bacteria deep 12 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

What can 3D mammograms do for your peace of mind?
New breast imaging technique makes breast cancer easier to see and reduces false positives. 3D mammography (digital breast tomosynthesis) is approved by the FDA and is quickly becoming the standard of care for breast cancer screening. Because it’s a newer technology, 3D screening mammography is not available at all screening facilities – but it’s available at Baptist Medical Center Nassau. 3D screening mammography is different from a 2D mammogram: • 3D mammography makes it easier to see the layers of breast tissue, allowing for better cancer detection. • 2D mammograms take one picture across the entire breast, in two directions: top to bottom and side to side. Unclear or suspicious findings from 2D views can increase the need for additional imaging and also lead to more false positives.
3D mammography is designed to overcome these limitations. 3D imaging technology moves in an arc around the breast to take X-ray pictures from many angles in seconds. A computer quickly assembles the pictures to produce clear, highly focused 3D images. This allows the radiologist to view the entire breast, layer by layer, for a more accurate screening — especially important for anyone with dense breast tissue or patients with an increased risk of breast cancer. Ask your doctor to recommend a facility that offers 3D mammograms. Or simply contact Baptist Nassau, now offering easy-to-schedule appointments for 3D screening mammograms.

within the tissue and pockets of the gums, without affecting healthy tissue. After the gum pockets are thoroughly clean, the body can heal the area naturally. Gum recession and tooth sensitivity, which can be significant following traditional gum surgery, are not an issue with the LANAP procedure. Fear of gum surgery treatment is greatly reduced when patients find out no scalpel or sutures will be used. It has been termed the No Cut, No Sew, No Fear procedure to treat gum disease. Because of the gentle nature of the procedure, no narcotic medications are needed after the procedure, and patients can typically return to work the next day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate half of the U.S. adult population, or over 60
million Americans, have gum disease. Several research studies have linked gum disease to many other health conditions like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and pre-term birth. Due to these health risks, patients should ask their dental care provider for a gum screening at their check-up visits. For those individuals diagnosed with gum disease, dental laser therapy is now available to provide a conservative non-invasive surgical approach to treat this common chronic disease. Dr. Kitson is a dentist with Amelia Dental Group, located at 1947 Citrona Drive in Fernandina Beach. For more information, call (904) 261-7181 or visit www. ameliadental.com.
A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO WELLNESS BY ELIZABETH FAILE
A
holistic wellness approach is imperative to any wellness program, yet it is a missing aspect in many wellness plans. Wellness is more than working out and eating healthy. It is a progressive process that embodies the eight pillars of wellness. As seniors age, it is increasingly essential to prioritize emotional, intellectual, social, and physical health, as well as healthy nutrition habits, each of which should be a focus of your daily activities. Before starting any new program, be sure to check with your doctor to make sure it’s a balanced part of your wellness plan. Marni Jennejahn is the Wellness Director at Osprey Village, a premier senior living community owned and operated by Senior Living Communities. She assists its residents in living longer, healthier, and happier lives. “Wellness is essential to our resident’s overall health,” says Jennejahn. “Meeting one-on-one with our residents to learn what their goals are is important when starting their wellness journey. Taking their overall health into consideration, we build a personalized plan to help them achieve their goals.” Jennejahn recommends stationary exercise equipment, resistence training with weights, and aerobic classes. With a packed wellness calendar, Jennejahn and the Wellness Center offer residents 14 different classes to choose that are at various times to allow for flexibility. 14 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Osprey Village has received three Argentum Best of the Best awards for their innovative wellness programming. Argentum is the leading national trade association within the senior living industry. The first award was for WAVES, an aquatic therapy program for residents who are suffering from dementia. Designed to improve strength, balance, appetite, sleep patterns, stronger bonds with caregiver, and to reduce anxiety and stress. In 2011, the community was awarded for C.L.I.M.B, where residents work to strengthen their lower bodies and enhance their independence, mobility, and balance. Awarded in 2012, their third Best of the Best Award was for the creation
of their Purposed Based Wellness program. These classes are designed with specific chronic diseases that are commonly found in the aging population in mind. Adopting a holistic approach to wellness provides a more fulfilling sense of well-being, creating a lifestyle that focuses less on specific problem areas by connecting the mind, body, and spirit. Each pillar of wellness should be a focus during your daily activities. Elizabeth Faile is Social Media Coordinator for Senior Living Communities, LLC. WHAT’S THAT RINGING IN MY EARS? BY ALEX BARNARD
A
re sounds bothering you that others don’t hear? You are not alone. Nearly 50 million people in the United States experience tinnitus. For many, it’s a ringing or buzzing sound, while others may hear swooshing, clicking, or pulsing. Some people experience tinnitus a few times a day, while others hear it all day long. All of us at Amelia Audiology experience tinnitus, and we have recommendations based on research and personal experiences to grant relief. 16 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
For many, tinnitus is a sign of hearing loss. As we age, we start to hear less of certain sounds, like a bird chirping, or people saying “s” or “th” sounds. While a gradual hearing loss is difficult to recognize by yourself, it’s easier to recognize the internal noise of tinnitus. Ruling out hearing loss is an important step in treating tinnitus. For many, tinnitus becomes worse when we hear outside sounds less, either from age, noise-exposure, or “plugged-

up” ears, as this makes us hear inside sounds more. Others report tinnitus after exposure to loud noises. Certain medications can also elicit tinnitus, including cancer drugs, certain antibiotics, and kidney medication. If you experience a sudden onset when taking a new medication, discuss this with your medical doctor. Some individuals are simply born with tinnitus. Although the exact cause of tinnitus can be unknown, the management of tinnitus is similar in most cases. Many things in our diet can make tinnitus worse. While everyone’s bodies are different, research and personal experience have shown that excess caffeine, alcohol, sodium, sugar, and sugar substitutes can make tinnitus worse. Some people may be affected by a few of these, while others by none. If you notice your tinnitus becoming worse at certain times, we recommend that you make notes of things in your diet. Stress can also make tinnitus worse. For most people, tinnitus is at its worst when they are in a quiet room or trying to concentrate. The key to managing this is to avoid silence. For some this involves using a fan, white noise machine, or playing soft music in the background. Those with tinnitus and hearing loss often see significant reductions in their tinnitus when using hearing aids. Newer research has shown that those with normal hearing and tinnitus are seeing relief by using hearing aids. Tinnitus can be a difficult thing to manage by yourself. For more information, please call for a hearing loss/tinnitus evaluation. Alex Barnard is an audiology doctoral student at Amelia Audiology. For more information, call Amelia Audiology at (904) 491-1515 or visit www.AmeliaAudiology.com.

enous disorders are a condition that damage your veins. Veins are the vessels that bring blood back to you heart after the body has used the oxygen in them. Common venous disorders include chronic venous insufficiency, deep vein thrombosis, thrombophlebitis, and varicose and spider veins. Venous insufficiency happens when veins in the legs fail to bring blood back to your heart effectively, resulting in blood pooling in the legs. Symptoms include swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy and flaky skin, leg cramping and weakness, skin discoloration, formation of varicose veins, and achy and burning legs. exam and ultrasound. Treatment includes antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, as well as warm compress to the affected veins. Sometimes it is necessary to strip or ablate those veins. Varicose veins are enlarged veins under the skin that develop when the walls of veins are weakened, stretched, and blood pools in the vein. Risk factors include family history of varicose veins, being overweight, pregnancy, and standing for long periods of time. Symptoms include leg pain, leg swelling, itchiness, skin discoloration, and leg wounds. Diagnosis is made by physical exam and ultrasound of the veins. Treatment consists of support hose, avoiding prolonged standing or sitting, and leg elevation. Sometimes
it is necessary to do a micro-phlebectomy, which removes the veins through tiny needle sticks in the skin. Spider veins are thin, reddish veins that usually form on the legs and sometimes on the face. These are more of a cosmetic concern than a health issue. They can be treated by sclerotherapy. Some of the real tiny red veins can be treated by a device called the Vein Gogh, which is the ohmic (electric) treatment of the tiny capillary veins. If you have any of these venous issues, please call Vein Care Center of Amelia Island at (904) 572-3074 to schedule an appointment with Gabor Kovacs MD, FACS Board Certified General and Vascular Surgeon
DRY EYE IS A COMMON CONDITION IN OLDER ADULTS BY DR. GERALD KOSS
D
ry eye is a condition in which a person doesn’t have enough quality tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. Tears are necessary for maintaining the health of the front surface of the eye and for providing clear vision. Dry eye is a common and often chronic problem, particularly in older adults. With each blink of the eyelids, tears spread across the front surface of the eye, known as the cornea. Tears provide lubrication, reduce the risk of eye infection, wash away foreign matter in the eye, and keep the surface of the eyes smooth and clear. Dry eyes can occur when tear production and drainage is not in balance. People with dry eyes either do not produce enough tears or their tears are of a poor quality: Tear production tends to diminish with age, with various medical conditions, or as a side effect of certain medicines. Environmental conditions can also decrease tear volume due to increased tear evaporation. When the normal amount of tear production decreases or tears evaporate too quickly from the eyes, symptoms of dry eye can develop. Tears are made up of three layers: oil, water and mucus. Each component protects and nourishes the front surface of 20 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
the eye. A smooth oil layer helps prevent evaporation of the water layer, while the mucin layer spreads the tears evenly over the surface of the eye. If the tears evaporate too quickly or do not spread evenly over the cornea due to deficiencies with any of the three tear layers, dry eye symptoms can develop. The most common form of dry eyes occurs when the water layer of tears is inadequate. This condition, called keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), is also referred to as dry eye syndrome. Some causes of dry eye disease can be genetics, various medical conditions, age, gender, medications, or environmental conditions, which may consist of a dry climate or even staring at a computer screen.

People with dry eyes may experience irritated, gritty, scratchy, or burning eyes; a feeling of something in their eyes; excess watering; and blurred vision. Advanced dry eyes may damage the front surface of the eye and impair vision. Dry eyes can be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination. Treatments for dry eyes aim to restore or maintain the normal amount of tears in the eye to minimize dryness and related discomfort and to maintain eye health. Come in to Amelia Eye Associates to find out why your eyes have been bothering you.

YOGA IS FOR EVERYONE BY LISA WAAS
Y
oga is universal. It is for the flexible and inflexible, thin and thick, young and old, fit and injured. It has found mainstream popularity as a way to improve flexibility and reduce stress, but the practice of yoga introduces many other benefits. Regular practice can improve circulation, coordination, and endurance while toning and strengthening muscles. It also teaches students how to calm the mind and find quiet places and moments, both internally and externally. Yoga is about breaking old habits and making new ones, becoming more aware of the self and the relationships between posture, movement, and health, and between the mind and the body. Yoga classes are a great way to meet new people and find community in a relaxed and non-judgmental space. Whether you are looking to expand your fitness regimen, heal an injury, find moments of quiet and mindfulness, or make new friends, yoga can help you achieve your goals. Practicing yoga will change the way you see yourself, others, and the world. The practice of yoga is a form of exercise that utilizes every part of the body. Like other sports, such as running, it helps to build strength and muscle mass and to improve lung capacity. However, it has added benefits, such as improving bone density, digestion, and lymphatic health, among others. There have been multiple studies that show the health benefits of yoga. In 2017, the American College of Physicians suggested 22 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
that doctors begin prescribing alternative treatments such as yoga instead of medication to manage low back pain. There are many different styles of yoga, including Iyengar, Yin, Restorative, and Vinyasa. While all styles offer the same physical benefits, they represent differing ways of teaching and practicing. Try a yoga class at Community Yoga + Wellness, where we believe that yoga is for everybody. We focus on the physical first, emphasizing correct alignment and performing adjustments to keep students safe and bring awareness to different parts of the body. When the body is aligned, the mind can be quiet. Yoga classes are available for everyone, whether you want to be challenged, restored, or healed. Beginners will learn in a safe, methodical, and educational environment. Intermediate students will be challenged to explore new poses and refine previous ones. Advanced students will delve into their practice and explore the most complex poses. We are a dedicated yoga school and the only studio in Nassau County to offer Iyengar classes, which focus on progression and intelligent practice. All you need for class is yourself. Lisa Waas is the owner of Community Yoga + Wellness. She is the only certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher, and one of two certified Yoga Therapists, in Nassau County.

SIXTH ANNUAL EMPTY BOWLS LUNCHEON RETURNS NOVEMBER 8 November is quickly approaching, which means it is time for Empty Bowls, the annual Barnabas Center fundraising luncheon. An empty bowl is a symbol of hunger, so in support of our neighbors coping with food insecurity, Barnabas is hosting this luncheon to raise awareness and funds to combat hunger and poverty in Nassau County. The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island and the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort are donating a simple meal of soup, bread, and dessert. In addition, every attendee receives a unique, hand-painted bowl, created and designed by local residents. With the help of many volunteers and organizations, including the Nassau County Boys and Girls Club, the Newcomers Club of Amelia Island, and Amelia Makery, more than 800 bowls are ready for attendees! In Nassau County, about 10,000 people do not know where their next meal is coming from, 3,000 of whom are children. Barnabas provides solutions to those in need. “The event’s community support is growing each year with more than 50 new sponsors in 2019. Everyone at Barnabas is grateful for the support and generosity of the community,” says Event Chair Donna Sweet. Empty Bowls will be held on November 8at noon at First Baptist Church. For reservations, call (904) 261-7000 or visit www.BarnabasNassau.org. COURTESY BARNANBAS CENTER
AMELIA ISLAND CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2020 SEASON
P LA CE S,
RIGHT WHALE FESTIVAL COMING TO MAIN BEACH The Right Whale Festival is coming to Amelia Island’s Main Beach early next month on November 2 and 3. This event celebrates the annual return of the endangered North Atlantic right whales to the warm waters along Amelia Island’s coast to give birth and nurse their young. With less than 400 right whales remaining, this family-fun occasion raises awareness of the threats to the species and how we can help in their recovery. The festival highlights local efforts to protect these whales from extinction, as well as ocean-themed activities and exhibits that emphasize education and environmentally responsible adventures and products. As part of being environmentally responsible, all are invited to join a beach cleanup on Saturday from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. to ready the ocean nursery for the calving season. Cleanup supplies will be provided by Keep Nassau Beautiful, but it’s suggested volunteers bring water, sunscreen and bug spray. All ages are invited and the time qualifies for youth and community service hours. Save the dates and plan to come early and spend the day! 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. There will be live music, food trucks, kids’ activities, art, and exhibits to learn about the right whale. For more information, call (904) 261-0165.

rt on Centre recently celebrated its fourth business anniversary on Amelia Island and is continuing to expand its business by representing over 35 North American artists, including several from the local area. The four partners, Jim and Kara Lawrence with Philip and Debbie Lehman, opened the gallery in April 2015. They developed strong, personal relationships with many artists and clients. With Jim Lawrence as her advisor, Courtney McCranie assumed ownership of the gallery in January 2019. She had been managing Art on Centre for almost two years. With her great love and enthusiasm for fine art, Courtney, a lifelong resident of Amelia Island, is very excited to take over the gallery. Courtney uses her decades of experience in home building to take on large-scale art installation projects, including the Nassau County Courthouse in Yulee, the Talbot Ballroom at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, and most recently, a private home on the island for a commissioned painting by Claire Jane Kendrick of St. Augustine that measured 12 feet by 6.5 feet.
“We appreciate all of the support that we continue to receive from the local community and we are looking forward to many more years to come,” says Courtney. “We continue to work hard to create partnerships with artists who represent a diversity of styles, techniques, and price points. We are continually searching for new work that will resonate with our clients.” Art on Centre’s mission has always been to create personal connections with artists and clients, bringing art to life in a welcoming environment. The gallery’s featured artists are Phillip Anthony, Chad Awalt, Donna Asquith, Adam Colangelo, Eileen Corse, Sally Cummings, Richard Currier, Renee Dinauer, Jim Gerard Holehouse, Marian Howard, Claire Jane Kendrick, Alex Kveton, Wan Marsh, Melissa Mason, Nancy Reyner, Suzy Scarborough, Lisa Schuster, Bonnie Shanas, Jihong Shi, Paul Tamanian, Cat Tesla, and Beau Wild. he iconic Amelia Paint and Hardware store has been in the Palmisano family for nearly forty years. Technically, Andy Palmisano’s mother started Amelia Paint and Hardware. “She bought the paint business in 1981,” Andy laughs. “For $800. My dad had rented a little part of the paint store for his millwork business, but it grew so fast. When the Hardee Brothers Building Supply Company closed down, we built out the other side of the building.” Today, Amelia Paint and Hardware is chock-full of hardware, marine supplies, and almost anything you might need to keep your house or boat in good working order. When asked how many square feet in the store, Andy isn’t sure, saying “we’ve added on so many times.” Andy, who bought the business from his parents in 2001, has two longtime employees—Kris Fera, who has worked at the store for 15 years, and Bonnie Dawson, who’s worked for nearly 23. When Andy asks Kris how many items they have in stock, they both grin. “It’s about 250,000 different SKU numbers,” says Kris. The bestselling items are stainless steel screws, drill bits, air conditioner filters, and keys. Amelia Paint and Hardware is located in the historic red brick building at the corner of Ash and South 5th Streets. The store is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. As for Andy, he works every day “except my golf day.” For more information, call (904) 261-6604. 32 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
RIS Financial Services is a full-service financial management and planning firm in Fernandina Beach focusing on the needs of individuals and families. Owner Tom Foy and his wife, Pat, were searching for a second home in the South Carolina and Georgia coastal area, and they found Amelia Island, as Tom says, “by mistake” when they joined family for a holiday stay. Tom says the two realized they were “home,” and they soon moved their primary residence to Florida. Tom founded IRIS Financial Services in Marlton, New Jersey and he was an active member of the community there before moving to Fernandina Beach. Tom has now opened the main office of IRIS Financial Services here on Amelia Island. The company provides financial and retirement planning; investment management; estate planning; and life, long-term care, and disability insurance. The IRIS office is located in Gateway to Amelia. Tom has been providing financial planning guidance for over thirty five years. He is a member of the Estate Planning Council of Northeast Florida and a past president of the New Jersey chapter. Tom is also a member of the Nassau County Chamber of Commerce Tom and Pat have been married over 40 years, and they have two children and three grandchildren. They are both active in children’s charities and dog rescue organizations. Tom is also an avid fan of the Philadelphia Eagles. The office is located at 961687 Gateway Blvd., Suite 201F. rane Island, a barrier island off the mainland of Amelia Island on the Amelia River, is a treasure, a place to be preserved, and a place to enjoy. And it also so happens to be the location of the prestigious Southern Living Magazine Idea House for 2019. “This project was a fortunate set of circumstances,” says John Hillman, a member of the Crane Island development team. “I reached out to explore the different programs they have for developers and builders, and they shared they were seeking a location for the 2019 Idea House Program.” The Crane Island Team invited them out, and they were very impressed with the vision, values, and drive of the development. Those of you among the 7,000 who have visited the home already understand why the sell was so easy. The entire 37 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
development is committed to putting first what is entrusted to it: the land, the natural environment, and the island’s history. “At the end of the day, what drives us is the importance of making sure we work with the natural environment to ensure homes, roads, and sidewalks respect what was here first,” says Hillman. He says that each day the team is looking at trees and coastlines and determining how to design every one of the 113 lots in such a way that the beauty of the land is preserved. And when you tour the canopy of oaks, hear the birds singing, and feel the fresh coastal breezes, you understand that the land is a treasure. A flagship feature of this community is its commitment to lifestyle. With waterfront parks, interconnected trail systems, continued on next page

and foot and bike thoroughfares to the mainland and beyond, residents are encouraged to enjoy the outdoors and the incomparable setting from both inside and outside their homes. The second value that stands out about Crane Island is its effort to honor the history of Amelia Island. “We care about the importance of timeless design, so we look no further than the great architecture and character of historic Fernandina Beach,” notes Hillman. As you pull into the driveway of the Crane Island Idea House, this is evident in the abundance of porches and their signature railings, all designed with a tip of the hat to the island’s storied past. As unique as the home’s design is, so is its functionality. “We wanted the home to fit perfectly into its location, with the look and feel of a traditional southern home, but one that lives as people do today,” says Chris Wood, co-owner of Riverside Homes, the home’s builder. “The architectural team of Jim Strickland and Clay Rokicki from Historical Concepts gave us a wonderful design to work from. This is one of the most detailed houses we’ve ever done and one of the most historically correct, but it’s still comfortably livable in every sense.” 38 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
Examples of the modern touches include large bi-fold doors to bring the outdoor living space in, a kitchen opening onto the dining and living spaces, and a hidden pantry. As you tour the home, you may learn about over 100 design ideas, along with information from the feature’s sponsor so you’ll know how to make the look your own! Designer Heather Chadduck Hillegas’s highlights include making new spaces feel reclaimed, painting trim and doors with southern hues, and using lighting to accentuate spaces, including the large porches. “In every room, and at the turn of every corner, we want people to discover a new concept in design and create an idea book for themselves that they will love,” says Wood. Hillman is quick to thank the local community for their support, especially the Amelia Island Convention and Visitors Bureau and hotel partners. Everyone is invited to visit the home Wednesday through Saturday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 – 4 p.m. through December 8, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Amelia Island Museum of History. Admission is $22. Visit www.craneisland.com for more information.

he building where The Crab Trap stands today was the first of five brick blocks built after the great fire of 1876, which destroyed everything built on the north side of Centre Street from the waterfront to Dade Street, and on both sides of 2nd Street. This handsome, two-story building was built by two German brothers, the Seydels, that same year. The brothers resided on the second floor with their families in two spacious apartments overlooking the waterfront. On the ground floor of that block were two stores: a millinery/notion business and a general store. In the late 1930s, the Bailey-Davis steamship agents moved their offices to the second floor, where they remained throughout World
War II. Later on, the Nassau County Leader newspaper took up residence on the north portion of the first floor. It was 1979 when The Crab Trap opened during Shrimp Festival weekend, which at the time had three locations. In 1992, Richard “Choo Choo” Germano bought The Crab Trap business and its Fernandina Beach building, which he and his daughter, Holly, continue to operate as one of the most historic and successful seafood restaurants on Amelia Island. “The Crab Trap has gone through many changes throughout the years,” says Holly. “Lots of renovations, lots continued on next page

of varied menu items, and lots of great staff people. But our goal has always been to serve the freshest and best local seafood available, and that’s what keeps our customers coming back.” The Crab Trap serves only local East Coast shrimp, plus grouper, red snapper, flounder, and more. “Whatever is freshest in the market, that’s what we serve,” says Holly. “And a lot of people might not know this, but we have awesome steaks, available at a really good price.” The Crab Trap will also cook fish for people who have booked their fishing trip with a licensed local charter fisherman. Their menu also offers lots of delicious sides, and they update their offerings frequently. “With the beauty of Amelia Island and our rich history, combined with our excellent food and great crew, you’ll always enjoy an unforgettable dining experience,” says Holly. “As my father has always said, ‘Our reputation is only as good as the last meal served.’” To celebrate The Crap Trap’s 40th year in business, the restaurant is offering raffles, new menu items, and shrimp specials. Their full bar features daily happy hour specials, a magnificent view of the Amelia River, two flat screen TVs for sports events, and more. They offer a great private space for hosting events like birthdays, weddings, rehearsal dinners, and holidays. “Our separate lounge area offers the flexibility to host mingling receptions or a pre-meal cocktail hour, when your guests will have the opportunity to try one of The Crab Trap’s signature cocktails,” says Holly. “Meal packages can be tailored to fit your needs, and can range from a four-course planned meal to family-style table services. And don’t forget to try a piece of our homemade Key Lime Pie for the perfect end to your gathering!” The Crab Trap is open Monday through Friday from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., plus additional hours seasonally. The
Oliver Family BY DICKIE ANDERSON PHOTO BY CHRISTY LE LAIT
Catherine, Amelia, Thomas, Evie, Anita, and Tommy Oliver
I
t is all about family for Anita and Tommy Oliver. The Olivers are a fourth-generation family living mid-Amelia Island on the marsh. Tommy Oliver’s parents moved to Amelia Island in 1945 when his Dad began work at Container Corporation (now West Rock). When a mill manager’s house off Gerbing Road became available, the Oliver family bought it in 1959 and have been there ever since. The many camellias and azaleas on the property were gifts from Gus Gerbing, the noted local camellia and azalea cultivator and good friend and neighbor of Tommy’s parents. The property is now a mini-compound, with Mary Ann (Tommy’s sister) and Paul Murphy living next door in a home they built in 2005. Tommy and Anita’s son, Thomas, and daughter-in-law, Catherine, with their two girls, Amelia and Evie, are close by on a connecting property. Early in their marriage, Tommy and Anita relocated often, finally settling in Marietta, Georgia, where they lived for 23 years. They wanted to come back to Amelia, and in 2006, they moved into Tommy’s childhood home, where his mother lived until her death at 95. They were thrilled when their son and family decided to join them on Amelia and start a business, Amelia Adventures. Tommy and Anita are active in the Memorial Methodist Church and volunteer with Hope House, America’s Youth, and other church activities. Both are avid tennis players and were part of the original organizing group that formed Kraft Tennis Partners near their Gerbing Road home. Tommy served as president of the Duncan Lamont Clinch Historical Society, where both he and Anita are active exploring and sharing Amelia Island’s amazing history. The younger Olivers, Thomas, Catherine, and their young daughters, moved to Fernandina Beach after living 55 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
in Sitka, Alaska for four years. Thomas has over 20 years of experience leading world-class outdoor expeditions. Kayaking is his specialty. A professional television producer and photographer, Thomas’s work has been featured on such popular shows as Deadliest Catch on The Discovery Channel and Coast Guard Alaska on The Weather Channel. Thomas won first place in the Amelia Island Film Festival for his short film On the Down-Low. Sharing her husband’s love of nature, Catherine has been an Outward Bound Guide and wilderness leader for several outdoor schools. She is a registered nurse specializing in cardiac care. Recognizing the great opportunities Amelia Island offered the family, Thomas and Catherine left Alaska and moved to the island in 2015. The girls would have good schools, Catherine could continue her nursing career, and Thomas could continue his film project work. They found that the island offered the perfect opportunity for a business they both believed in. Amelia Adventures, born with the help of family and friends, has recently expanded with a retail shop and outpost on North Eighth Street. Amelia Adventures offers a variety of water-based adventures. In addition to kayak tours, kayak instructional clinics, paddleboard tours and lessons, and a Kids Adventure Camp, the couple offer private boat tours exploring Amelia and Cumberland Islands. A big bonus on the tours is the complimentary photography they offer. The senior Olivers love having their granddaughters nearby and the younger Olivers appreciate the help the girls’ grandparents can offer. The Oliver family treasures Amelia Island and are thrilled to be able to share it through Amelia Adventures. For more information, visit www.ameliaadventures.com

perfect perennials As the weather cools, now is the time to get ready for next spring by adding colorful new plants to your garden, like Cherry Ruffles, Spearmint, and Apple Twist. BY BETTY MORRELL
F
inally the weather is more comfortable for planting and working in the garden! I want to mention a few more new PP plants before I start next month on the new ones for 2020. I’m excited to attend the Florida Growers Trade Show soon, and I look forward to returning with lots of new plants and useful tips for your gardens. These plants were new for the 2019 season, and I have seen them available in many nurseries. I love these colorful dependable perennials in the Heuchera family. The new ones in the Dolce series are very colorful and will add a little zing to your shade gardens. Cherry Ruffles has a great mix of foliage and color. It’s a sweet little plant with ruffled leaves that remind you of red velvet. They mound nicely with flower spikes that reach 22 inches in height. The beautiful vibrant wine red foliage will wake up your shaded landscape. Small delicate pink bell-shaped flowers add interest to the red leaves in summer and attract butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden. A great plus to this lovely plant is that it stays

attractive all year long. This plant is salttolerant and maintenance-free; just trim back the damaged foliage in spring so that it gets a good start on the year. It will make a wonderful addition to your garden either as a border, a specimen, or planted in a pot. A nice contrast to Cherry Ruffles is the Dolce Spearmint PP, with its fabulous lobed silvery leaves with deep green veins and topped with sprays of vibrant pink bell-shaped flowers that start blooming in early summer. All of these plants like moist but well-drained organic enriched soil. Plant in part-sun to shade, where they will mound 8 to 10 inches in height. The flower spikes will tower up to 22 inches. Do not plant these in hot direct sun as it will scorch their leaves.

Wildberry and Apple Twist are two more of the new Dolce PP plants, and they are very interesting and colorful. Wildberry has attractive large purple leaves with tiny pale pink flowers. The plant mounds 10 to 14 inches and will grow 16 to 20 inches in width. Wildberry thrives in part-shade, but will grow in full shade. Dolce Apple Twist Coral Bells is an evergreen beauty with many great features. It is compact, mounding from 10 to 12 inches in height and will spread 20 to 24 inches. As the seasons change, so will the color interest. Creamy white bell-shaped flowers appear at 20 inches in height over the beautiful chartreuseyellow leaves, with an overlay of silver to pinkish splashes. These plants are all salt-tolerant and can be used in mass plantings, landscape, specimen, borders, or in a container on your patio. Enjoy one or all of these interesting, reliable, low-maintenance plants. They like slowreleased fertilizer once in a while to keep them robust. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

ay and Les McMillin are settled into their cottage at Osprey Village, ready to enjoy their retirement years. They spent a great deal of time searching for the perfect retirement place. Their daughter, Kristin, was invaluable in their search. She helped quantify what her parents were looking for in a CCRC (Continuum of Care Retirement Community): altitude less than 1,000 feet, no snow, detached home, a decent progression of health care, an ocean location, and good medical facilities nearby. The couple narrowed their search to eight different places in Florida to visit. Kristin was their driver and photographer, and she was ready to give a third opinion when needed. Kristin became so much a part of her parent’s decision that when it came time for them to move, she moved, too, adjusting her career and relocating to Florida to be near her parents.

Amelia Island’s Osprey Village met all the McMillin’s criteria, offering options that met their current and anticipated needs. Osprey Village offers independent living with a maintenance-free lifestyle in a villa or cottage. They also offer assisted living on an hourly basis to help with dressing or pills, and 24/7 assisted living is also available. A memory care program provides care for those seniors challenged with Alzheimer’s and dementia. The goal at Osprey Village is to stay in your own home as long as possible. Outstanding medical care is available both on the island and in Jacksonville, including the Mayo Clinic. Once a cottage was available, the McMillins began remodeling. costs are covered, but the cost of customizing is paid by the new owner. Osprey Village updates to their standard and provides construction and management. The McMillins chose to customize and were willing to wait until the work was done. The major change was the removal of a separating wall in the main living area, which created a large open space reaching from the front door to the back windows and small patio. Their goal was to create a more contemporary design with a bright and sunny open concept. Behind the house is lovely open space with large oaks and greenery. The main living area has a long couch with lots of room for family and friends. Across one side of the main room is a custom kitchen built to the couple’s specifications. Having recently

remodeled their kitchen in Denver, they knew exactly what they wanted. They designed their new kitchen with the latest in modern conveniences. They have a double oven with cafÊ doors, an induction cooktop, a wine refrigerator, a microwave drawer, and lots of drawers for storage. Moving from a large home in Colorado where the McMillins had lived for 50 years to a cottage created many challenges. They left a more traditional house and furnishings and have kept their new house open and simply furnished. In a small area near the front entrance, they have retained their traditional dining room table and chairs and kept a traditional look. An elegant family heirloom chandelier hangs over the table. The master bedroom is open and spacious, and they love their custom closet by California Closets. It is so large that there is no need for bureaus in the bedroom. The room is elegantly simple with a bed, built-in nightstands, and a favorite piece of art. The floor plan includes two airy guest bedrooms. A bonus room at the back of the house is evolving into an office space as the McMillins continue to settle into their home. The couple has great enthusiasm for Osprey Village and the people who have helped them settle into their new home. They enjoy the restaurant-style dining, the wellness center, and many activities that are offered to residents. They are enjoying the many opportunities to play bridge. David’s RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE Known for their elegant ambience and impeccable service, David’s sets the standard for haute cuisine, with classics like their Delmonico Ribeye and Pan-Seared Alaskan Halibut. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
T
hrough the years and the evolution of downtown Fernandina Beach, the stately, ivy-draped brick building at 802 Ash Street has lived many lives. A telephone exchange, a warehouse, and more recently, the home of restaurants that would come to define haute cuisine on Amelia Island. Since 2012, David’s Restaurant and Lounge has set a quality standard for steaks and seafood that is unsurpassed. Walking into David’s feels special, as the refined atmosphere and their attention to detail are evident coming through the door. I went in recently with my friend, Christie, to celebrate the end of a long week. Our server, Roki, suggested a glass of Sonoma Cutrer Russian River Chardonnay, an oaky, buttery white that would pair well with the escargot I was looking forward to enjoying. Christie decided to start with the Chilean Sea Bass Cake, which was served over mixed greens with red onion, cherry tomatoes, lemon caper remoulade, and basil pesto. Before our appetizers hit the table, however, the stage was set as we enjoyed an amuse-bouche from Chef Devin Odom. Amuse-bouche translates to a little something extra, a hint at the experience to come. This single bite of honey cream cheese topped with fresh raspberry compote, along with David’s freshly baked bread served in a real treasure chest, was an impressive start to our dinner. The wine complemented our two appetizers beautifully. By now, Christie was gushing about David’s elegant food and their impeccable service, and just when it seemed it couldn’t get much better, Roki brought us Lemon Sorbet to cleanse our palates and prepare us for our entrees. David’s is famous for their whole Alaskan King Crab, shipped straight from the Bering Sea, caught aboard the Deadliest Catch boat, but Christie had her eye on David’s Filet Mignon, grilled to perfection and served with Wild Mushroom Risotto, Seasonal Vegetables, and Port Wine Demi-Glace. Opting to add a couple of fresh scallops to her order, she called it one the best dishes she has ever tasted. I would have to say the same for my pan-seared Alaskan Halibut, served with a roasted potato 66 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
stack and caramelized carrots, red pepper coulis, and lemon beurre blanc. Two classic dishes, perfectly prepared. It was tough to think about dessert after such an extravagant meal, but it’s hard to turn down David’s Key Lime Pie and Crème Brulee. Both were perfectly decadent and totally caloriefree (wink wink). As we prepared to leave, we were reminded of an upcoming wine dinner featuring several of the wines on David’s extensive
list. For more information, please call (904) 310-6049 or visit www.ameliaislanddavids.com. David’s is open for dinner seven days a week, and be sure to spend some time in their lounge, which opens at 5 p.m. and features some of the finest libations in the area, as well as a pared-down menu of cool eats at the bar. David’s also has two event areas available for larger gatherings, including a stunning private wine room that accommodates up to 12 guests. For a larger gathering such as a wedding reception, rehearsal dinner, or corporate meeting, their smaller private dining room accommodates up to 50 people.

fter having owned both a powerboat and a large sailboat, I now know that the best kind of boat to have is one that belongs to a friend. For those who don’t have friends with boats, I have discovered the next best thing: the Amelia Boat Club. Witt Storm, who recently purchased and re-configured the former Amelia Island Yacht Basin, has re-opened the boat club at the marina. The club, based in one of the Bahamian cottages on the marina property, gives members a choice of watercraft and also offers daily boat, Wave Runner, and water ski rentals. Boat Club Manager Captain Alee Henderson says about 95 percent of club members are former boat owners who appreciate the convenience of club membership. “We have an app where a member can reserve a boat for up to 45 days in advance,” Alee explains. “All the member has to do is show up at the dock, untie the lines and head out.” On a recent Saturday, Captain Alee took me and a friend out for a spin in a 20-foot center console Pioneer. We left the marina and headed south on the Intracoastal, where Alee teaches new club members basic navigation and boat handling skills. “We go to the south,” says Alee, “because it’s important to see where the shoals and oyster bars are and how the markers are not in a straight line.” 84 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •
We then cruised north to downtown Fernandina Beach, past the port and Egan’s Creek, to the St. Mary’s Inlet. The breezy afternoon had stirred up a little chop on the sound, but nothing the comfortable Pioneer couldn’t handle. We motored along the south end of Cumberland Island to take a look at the wild horses, checked out a submarine guard vessel headed toward Kings Bay, and watched dolphins playing in our wake before heading over to Sea Camp dock on Cumberland. We went ashore to enjoy the gourmet lunches packed by Chef Michael McCarroll of Restaurant 251, the marina’s newly remodeled waterfront restaurant. Lobster salad sandwiches were the perfect culinary touch for the fall-like afternoon. An initiation fee and a choice of monthly membership plans entitle a member to the use of three Pioneer center console boats, two flats fishing boats (both set up with live wells and coolers), and four “Tritoons” (pontoon boats with three hulls). There are also four Wave Runners available for discount rentals by club members. Water skis, tow-behind tubes, and knee boards are also included in club membership. Chef McCarroll at Restaurant 251 can have picnic lunches ready to go for a day’s outing and can also cater group events on the pontoon boats. “Club members can order ahead, and we will have the lunches loaded into the on-board coolers,” says McCarroll. Amelia Island Boat Club is member driven, with monthly social gatherings, sunset cruises, and movies on the lawn for the kids. Amelia Island Marina COO Witt Storm says that because the Amelia Boat Club is locally owned and operated, it will be responsive to members’ needs. “We are thrilled to be part of the Amelia Island community,” Witt says. “We’re going to be here a long time.” Amelia Island Boat Club is located at the Amelia Island Marina, 251 Creekside Drive.
