about the importance

of being and staying healthy.

Maintaining good health is an important part of our sense of well-being. Our experience this year with Covid-19 has made us much more conscious about the importance of being and staying healthy. Just as we have changed many of our habits in the last six months to protect ourselves from this new virus, so now going forward we should continue the same vigilance about our health and the health of our loved ones. The same focus we applied to Covid-19 precautions should be used to safeguard our everyday good health. Lasting good health depends on day-to-day attention, not just on treating problems. Healthy choices mean healthy living (even something as simple as good hand washing, as we all now know). With conscious effort, we can considerably lessen our risk of being besieged by health issues as we get older. Our health also depends on good treatment and medical advice that we receive on the local level. Having a vibrant medical community is crucial, and we are very fortunate in Nassau County to have an excellent group of medical professionals close to home, led by the outstanding Baptist Medical Center Nassau, and in Jacksonville. An increasing number of therapies, treatments, and surgeries are being offered here on Amelia Island, providing more options in treatment and, of course, greater convenience. Each year, we use the October Amelia Islander Magazine for a “Health & Wellness” special issue to highlight important issues in maintaining good health. In these times, we find ourselves reflecting on our health a little more often. Aches and pains or pain in our joints worry us more than usual. We ask ourselves: What can I do to protect myself from illness and disease? How can I preserve my strength and energy? When we look at our lives, we realize that a big part of preserving good health into the future involves good habits today. In this issue, we have asked some of Amelia Island’s local professionals to share their expertise with us. From women’s heart health to continuing to get the necessary screenings despite the Covid virus, we hope these articles will keep you informed on important medical issues. Many thanks to the doctors and health professionals who shared their expertise with us. Also in this issue, we check in with Amelia Plantation Chapel, which is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its landmark sanctuary, with various activities to come in 2021; preview an exciting exhibition at the Fernandina Beach Branch Library on Northeast Florida’s beautiful parks; catch up with High Tide Amelia, a group of local businesswomen creating programs and excursions on Amelia Island for women; enjoy a “Backyard Adventure” to Cary State Forest; and much more.

AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE HEALTH & WELLNESS SPECIAL ISSUE

A Lifetime of

Healthy Living DON’T BE QUIET ABOUT HEART ATTACK SYMPTOMS BY HOUSTON MOONEY, MD

W

hat’s the number one killer among women? Despite lingering misconceptions, heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States. A study from the Journal of the American College of Cardiology 2017 showed that only half of women realize this fact; the remainder thought breast cancer or other cancers were the culprit. These statistics certainly have held true in my family, as both of my grandmothers had significant heart disease. In fact, my personal experience with women’s heart disease was the primary driver behind my decision to pursue a career in cardiology. Even though it’s true that more men have heart attacks than women, women are more likely die after a heart attack for several reasons. Women tend to ignore or brush aside their symptoms, blaming them on stress and their busy lifestyles, or they may not realize that atypical symptoms, like fatigue and shortness of breath, are signs of heart disease before it’s too late. So, what steps can women take to protect their heart health? They can start by knowing their risk factors. Nearly half of all Americans have at least one of three major risk factors: high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, or smoking. Other medical conditions and lifestyle choices can also put people at higher risk for heart disease, including diabetes, obesity, an unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol use. There are also atypical risk factors for coronary artery disease that are much more common in women, such as inflammatory 11 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

OCTOBER 2020

www.AmeliaIslander.com

conditions like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Chest radiation associated with breast cancer or lymphoma can also increase the risk of heart problems. Secondly, women should know that while chest pain remains the number-one symptom, heart disease can also cause fatigue, shortness of breath, jaw pain, nausea, sweating, and arm pain. If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t ignore them; check in with your doctor immediately. Lastly, healthy lifestyle choices and habits can make a difference. While some risk factors are out of your control, such as family history or being over age 45, there are choices you can make now that will lower your risk of heart disease. These include: eating a healthy diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and fish; monitoring your

sodium, fat and sugar intake; and watching your portion sizes; limiting alcohol consumption; drink moderately (or not at all); sticking to a regular exercise program of at least 30 minutes a day; keeping your weight in check, and asking your doctor about what a healthy weight means for you; getting enough sleep; taking care of your mental health and treating stress; knowing your numbers, including cholesterol, blood pressure, and more. Talk to your doctor to learn about these key numbers. Houston Mooney, MD, is a board-certified cardiologist with Baptist Heart Specialists at Baptist Medical Center Nassau and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. If you’re looking for a physician, call 904.202.4YOU to find one who’s right for you.

DON’T LET ONE HEALTHCARE EMERGENCY BECOME ANOTHER SCOT ACKERMAN, M.D., FACR

W

hen COVID hit the United States, medical providers had one goal in mind: keep the largest number of people safe and healthy. We took a variety of steps, including halting elective procedures, doing as much telemedicine as possible, and postponing annual screenings and check-ups. These steps were responsible and prudent because we were only going to be in this situation for a month or two. Right? Then we learned more… and more time passed, more cases, more time, more spikes… and now even more time. It became apparent that while the pause in non-emergency medical visits and screenings was appropriate at the onset, we were going to have to figure out a different path forward for the long-term. Remember our goal, which is to keep the greatest 12 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

number of people safe and healthy. In order to accomplish that, we needed to get our cancer screenings back up and running. Doctors can’t treat undiagnosed cancer. The National Cancer Institute predicts that there will be over 10,000 additional deaths from colon and breast cancer due to the temporary COVID-19 shutdown. As a radiation oncologist, I fear that many people who postponed their screenings during the shutdown will not reschedule. The cancer diagnoses that we are not catching now will still come to light, but at a later stage and with worse prognoses. If caught in its early stages, several types of cancer, such as colon, prostate, and some types of breast cancer, are curable with wonderful quality-of-life outcomes.

What can 3D mammograms do for your peace of mind?

New breast imaging technique makes breast cancer easier to see and reduces false positives. 3D mammography (digital breast tomosynthesis) is approved by the FDA and is the standard of care for breast cancer screening. And it’s available at Baptist Medical Center Nassau. 3D screening mammography is different from the traditional 2D mammograms: • 3D mammography makes it easier to see the layers of breast tissue, allowing for better cancer detection. • 2D mammograms take one picture across the entire breast, in two directions: top to bottom and side to side. Unclear or suspicious findings from 2D views could increase the need for additional imaging and also lead to more false positives.

3D mammography is designed to overcome these limitations. The technology moves in an arc around the breast to take X-rays from many angles in seconds. A computer quickly assembles the pictures to produce clear, highly-focused 3D images. This allows the radiologist to view the entire breast, layer by layer, for a more accurate screening. For anyone with dense breasts, which is a higher amount of fibrous tissue occurring in 1 in 2 women, 3D mammography exams are particularly effective. Ask your doctor to recommend a facility that offers 3D mammograms. Or simply contact Baptist Nassau, now offering easy-to-schedule appointments for 3D screening mammograms.

SAME-DAY OR NEXT-DAY APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE Schedule online or by phone today: baptistjax.com/3dmammo • 904.202.2222 © Baptist Health 2020

Right now, you can safely get your needed screenings. At Ackerman Cancer Center, and many other facilities in Northeast Florida, we exceed CDC guidelines. When choosing where to get your screenings, look for a facility with the following COVID protocols: pre-screening everyone who comes in our building for COVID; limiting the number of guests each patient can have; mask requirements; and frequent sanitation of equipment, preferably done in front of you. For the first time in years, the American Cancer Society expects cancer deaths to rise instead of drop. Don’t let one healthcare crisis become another. Look at your calendar, review the recommendations for your age group, and stay on top of necessary screenings and check-ups. Scot Ackerman, M.D. is Medical Director of Ackerman Cancer Center in Fernandina Beach. For more information, please call (904) 277-2700.

MAKING A SPLASH FOR WELLNESS BY ELIZABETH FAILE

reating a lifestyle with wellness at its core should be a priority for everyone, as it is at Osprey Village, a premier senior living community located on Amelia Island. The community’s mission is to support seniors in living longer, healthier, happier lives. As part of that ongoing mission, the community will soon add a 640-square-foot indoor saltwater pool as an extension of their current wellness program. The addition of a pool will allow residents to have onsite access to aquatic therapy. Participating in aquatic wellness programs on a regular basis constitutes a full-body workout 14 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

that allows seniors to burn calories while protecting their bones and joints. Swimming and aquatic movement is a form of low impact exercise, making it easy on muscles, due to the buoyancy of the water and resistance that is naturally created. Additionally, swimming keeps an average adult’s heart rate up without putting the stress of their body. Swimming and water aerobics help to raise one’s heart rate gradually, which strengthens the muscles and improves circulation, effectively lowering the risk of heart disease. Participating in resistancebased exercises provides seniors with a safe opportunity to

Overall, aquatic exercise is beneficial for seniors because it helps to maintain a healthy heart, lungs, muscles and weight and assists with living a healthy, independent life. The wellness program at Osprey Village has been recognized by Argentum, a senior living association leader, for three national Best of the Best Awards in wellness. Previously Osprey Village has maintained a partnership with a local aquatic center to participate in its award-winning WAVES program. WAVES is an aquatic therapy program for seniors suffering from dementia. It was inspired by the needs of Osprey Village residents and designed to improve strength, balance, appetite, sleep patterns, and reduce overall anxiety and stress.

In addition to WAVES, Osprey Village residents will be able to enjoy the new aquatic center for lap swimming, relaxation, and scheduled classes like Aqua Fit. Aqua Fit focuses on flexibility, strength training, balance, and cardio all in one program, utilizing the water for resistance and buoyancy. A holistic approach to wellness that includes aquatic therapy provides a sense of well-being, creating a lifestyle that focuses on remaining independent throughout life and enjoying retirement to the fullest. KEEPING YOUR EYES HEALTHY WHEN YOU HAVE DIABETES DR. CAPRITTA ROBERTS, DO

Y

ou should plan to make yearly eye doctor visits when you have diabetes. High blood sugar can lead to eye problems like blurry vision, cataracts, glaucoma, and retinopathy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this year 1 in 10 people have diabetes, and approximately 1 in 3 have prediabetes. Furthermore, diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults aged 20 to 74, causing several issues with the eyes, such as the following. Blurry Vision: The eye has a lens that focuses light so we can see. If you have diabetes, when your blood sugar rises high, it can cause the lens to swell and make your vision blurry. These changes may fluctuate during the day. Cataracts: In the lens, slowly over time, high sugar in the lens creates sorbitol build up which makes the lens cloudy. One might experience this change as blurred vision, halos around lights, or glare. While anyone can develop cataracts, people with diabetes are more likely to develop them younger and have them progress faster. Glaucoma: Having diabetes doubles your risk of developing glaucoma. Most commonly, glaucoma develops when high eye pressure damages the optic nerve in the back of your eye. This nerve is important for processing vision information and damage initially causes loss of your peripheral vision. You often do not experience symptoms until it is too late. Your eye doctor has the screening tools to catch changes early. Retinopathy: Over time, high blood sugar damages blood vessels in the body. When it damages the blood vessels in the eye, bleeding and leaking fluid can cause vision loss. If you have uncontrolled diabetes, new blood vessels can grow which 16 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

are fragile, leak more, and can lead to retinal detachments or blindness. What can you do? Eat healthy and exercise 30 minutes daily. If you have diabetes, take your medications to manage your blood sugar and reduce the risk of complications. Maintain good blood pressure and cholesterol while working with your health care team to keep up with the necessary screening and maintenance tests. At first, you may have no symptoms. Eye problems can develop slowly, or you may have no symptoms until damage is severe and more difficult to treat. Since many of the eye issues related to diabetes are preventable, scheduling a comprehensive diabetic eye exam with your eye specialist is a smart move to check for the presence of eye disease and discuss what treatment options are available. PANDEMIC-RELATED JAW PAIN AND CRACKED TEETH BY DR. PAUL M. MILLER, DMD

I

t is no secret that COVID-related anxiety is having a major effect on public health, and dental health is no exception. We have observed an increase in prevalence of two major dental issues in particular during this time: cracked teeth and jaw pain as a result of clenching and grinding. Americans are working from home in unprecedented numbers, often sitting at their home workstations with poor body positioning (or “ergonomics”). These awkward positions can cause us to hunch the shoulders forward, curving the spine in an unhealthy way. Poor posture during the day can translate into a teeth-grinding problem at night. Additionally, increased levels of societal stress have led to poorer sleep. An inability to turn off the body’s “fight or flight” stress response at bedtime can cause higher levels of tension in the jaw musculature, leading to muscle and joint pain, as well 18 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

as cracked teeth. It can also cause irreversible damage to the jaw joint (TMJ). A cracked tooth may need a crown, root canal, or if severe enough, can lead to loss of the tooth. Early diagnosis and treatment is key for the most favorable treatment outcome. Stress management is vitally important for physical and mental health. Regular exercise is a healthy way to reduce stress and promote healthy posture. If you catch yourself clenching or grinding during the day, separate your teeth, put your tongue to the roof of your mouth, and breathe slowly and deeply through your nose. This can help to relieve stress and promote a healthier posture. One of the best ways to prevent damage to the teeth and jaw due to stress is a custom dental device to wear at night. In more severe cases, a daytime device may also be recommended. A night guard evenly distributes jaw forces and protects the teeth

from damage, helping patients avoid problems like worsening dental pain, more time in the dental chair, and increased dental costs associated with fixing damaged teeth. Minor tooth fractures may not cause any pain at first, which is why it is important to see your dentist at very regular intervals for examination and preventive care. Catching tooth fractures and any other tooth problems early is vital. If you feel you are experiencing worsening symptoms associated with jaw pain, clicking or popping in the jaw joints, increased tooth sensitivity, or tooth pain, please see your dentist right away. You may be able to prevent further damage and help yourself get more restorative sleep in the process! Dr. Paul Miller is a general dentist with Amelia Gentle Dentistry. UNDERSTANDING SLEEP APNEA BY KATHIA A. ORTIZ-CANTILLO, MD

S

leep apnea is a common, often undiagnosed, sleep disorder afflicting 20 million adult men and women in the U.S. It is characterized by frequent pauses in breathing due to obstruction of the airway. These pauses in breathing can happen 30 times per hour, disrupting healthy sleep and increasing your risk for other serious health conditions. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) can occur in men, women, and children. Other symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea include snoring, insomnia, sweating, sleep awakenings due to gasping or choking, dry mouth, and frequent urination at night. Symptoms of sleep apnea during the day may include sleepiness, fatigue, memory loss, poor productivity, headaches, heartburn, and depression. Sleep apneas are caused when the muscles in your soft palate, tongue, and tonsils become overly relaxed during sleep, narrowing your airways and stopping your breathing for a few seconds. As a result, your brain is triggered, briefly wakes you up, and re-starts your breathing. This can occur many times in a night, disturbing your sleep without you realizing it. To diagnose obstructive sleep apnea, your doctor will review your symptoms and perform a physical examination. Polysomnography (recording body measurements during sleep) is performed in a sleep laboratory or at home, providing details on the length and quality of sleep, breathing, and heart rate. OSA increases the risk of heart disease, irregular heart rhythms, congestive heart failure, hypertension, stroke, and 20 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

diabetes. It is commonly treated by making lifestyle changes and using a specialized breathing apparatus while sleeping called a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) apparatus. A mask is worn while sleeping, providing a continuous supply of compressed air to keep your airway open. It is a highly effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea and can be adjusted or modified to improve comfort. Mild symptoms of OSA can be treated by a dental appliance called a mandibular advancement device (MAD). The device is worn over your teeth while sleeping and holds your jaw and tongue in a forward position to increase the opening of your airway. A new technique called INSPIRE is an upper airway stimulation system that includes a small impulse generator implanted beneath the clavicle. It is an outpatient procedure. While you sleep, Inspire opens your airway, allowing you to breathe normally and sleep peacefully. If you have moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea and are not able to use or get consistent benefit from CPAP, you may qualify for this therapy. Kathia A Ortiz-Cantillo, MD of Amelia Respiratory and Sleep Medicine is Board Certified in Sleep, Pulmonary, and Critical Care Medicine and Physician Board Certified in Internal Medicine. KEEP NASSAU BEAUTIFUL WINS STATE AWARD FOR “GREAT AMERICAN CLEAN-UP” Amelia Island is known for its natural beauty, but nature needs help from mankind to stay the way it is meant to be. Keep Nassau Beautiful (KNB) is a local organization that seeks to do just this by educating citizens about improving the community’s outdoor spaces through its programs. The charitable, not-forprofit organization is working to make every beach, park, playground, and public space a clean and safe area for the community to enjoy. Keep Nassau Beautiful, an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, is one of 40 state affiliates of Keep Florida Beautiful. In their recent annual award celebration, Keep Florida Beautiful presented awards in ten categories, including an award to Keep Nassau Beautiful for its efforts in the Great American Clean-Up “Trash-Off.” KNB’s success is based on one key component – volunteers – and they invite everyone to get involved. Volunteers work to remove litter from Florida roads and waterways as well as participate in beautification programs and encourage recycling. If you’d like to adopt a highway, shore, road, plant for the future, or support their good work, visit www.keepnassaubeautiful.org. KNB works right in your own neighborhood, and it’s a great chance to for the entire family to get involved in protecting our beautiful island.

AUTHOR SUSAN ZURENDA PRESENTS AWARD-WINNING NOVEL BELLS FOR ELI Author Susan Zurenda will talk about her recent award-winning novel, Bells for Eli, on October 14 at 10:00 a.m. at The Book Loft on Centre Street. The novel was inspired by a real-life cousin’s tragic childhood accident in the late 1950’s. The novel explores how one misstep changes the trajectory of a young boy’s life and creates immense conflict in the lives of those around him in a time and place of supposed innocence in the small-town South of the 1960’s and 70’s. A distinctive coming-of-age story, the novel follows cousins Eli and Delia, born in different social strata, who grow extraordinarily close in childhood because of Eli’s accident. As Eli encounters bullying by schoolmates who mock his disfigurement, achieving acceptance is torturous for both Eli and Delia, who becomes his protector. Zurenda will discuss the story behind this story in a workshop entitled “Family Stories: Evoking Emotion in Your Characters.” Following the workshop, the author will be presenting a talk on “The Small-Town South in the 60’s” at noon at the Fernandina Beach Branch Library. The event is free and open to the public. To attend the workshop, contact The Book Loft at (904) 261-8991 or visit their website at www.thebookloftamelia.com/events.

uzy Scarborough of Columbia, South Carolina is one of Art on Centre’s thirty-five North American artists. Originally from Louisville, Suzy attended the University of South Carolina’s School of Law and graduated Cum Laude in the late 1980s. After an intense career as staff attorney for the South Carolina Court of Appeals, she decided to work full-time in her studio, creating large and small museum-quality collage/paintings ranging in size from one foot up to eight feet tall. The artist begins each piece by creating a collage background with golden brown paper from book pages and columns of non-English text. She likes late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century books for their beautiful and intricate drawings, explaining that she is drawn to botanical drawings, maps, geometric drawings, architectural drawings, anatomical illustrations, and ancient cave drawings. Over the collage, she paints with acrylic paint, oil sticks, and sometimes watercolor to allow the painting to develop organically. These pieces take on the dreamscape quality of a watery

garden, cloud forest, or luminous landscape. She then coats the images with layers of varnish that she heats to create a crackled texture, then brushes on layers and layers of gold glaze and UV clear coat for a museum-quality finish. Scarborough’s Italian Renaissancethemed “Redemption,” a 96 in. by 69 in. original mixed media on wood panel, is displayed prominently in the front window of Art on Centre. Due to health concerns, Art on Centre is open by appointment to ensure the safety of their visitors and staff. For an appointment, contact the gallery by emailing GalleryManager@ ArtOnCentre.com, visit their Instagram page or website at www.artoncentre. com, or call (904) 624-7255. The gallery offers a selection of artwork from established North American artists with over 200 original pieces on-site. Virtual photo overlay services are available, along with complimentary local delivery to an expanded delivery area. Professional installation is offered on request. Art on Centre is located in the downtown historic district at 503 Centre Street.

velyne Talman of Amelia Island has a beautiful selection of outfits and accessories for every occasion, from Motherof-the Bride dresses and island casual wear to one-of-a-kind jewelry designed by local artists. But it’s more than a boutique; it’s a place to connect. The team is headed up by Kim Faulkner. The New York transplant tells me the heart of Evelyne Talman is the team. “We’re a unique blend of old-timers, newcomers, and everything in-between. We genuinely enjoy dressing people, and have had the pleasure of dressing generations of ladies,” says Kim. Along with their socially distanced sip and shops, in-store trunk shows, and private shopping options, Evelyne Talman is on social media. If you haven’t looked them up online, you really should. They have Facebook and Instagram live fashion shows, trunk shows, and so much more. “Every Friday, we take a minute for a short post we call Fridays in Fernandina. It’s a great opportunity for customers to meet our local artists, see what’s new in the store, and it’s a nice way to stay connected.” And there’s Roscoe, the unofficial “official” mascot of the boutique and Kim’s four-legged friend. Roscoe is a nine-and-ahalf year old English Bulldog, who celebrated his last birthday with cake, champagne, and a special discount for his followers. How fun is that? Visit them at 4800 First Coast Highway in the Harris Teeter Shopping Plaza, shop online at www. evelynetalman.com, or call (904) 491-4878. And don’t forget to connect with them on social media!

he bubbles on Third Street may catch your eye, and the enchanting scents coming from Amelia Island Soapery will grab your attention, but the beautiful artisan soaps, bath bombs, and shampoo bars that are on display in this unique boutique call you inside. “People think we add fragrance to the bubbles that leads you to our door,” laughs Tracy Gunn laughs. “But that’s just an added bonus from making our products on site!” Tracy and James Gunn moved to Amelia Island a year ago from south Florida. “It was time to slow down and have some fun.” says Tracy, who used to distribute her bath and body products to large retailers like Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s. “I knew that Amelia Island was the place for us.” The wonderful smells that have come to be known as the Scents of Amelia Island are in such demand by local and visiting customers that Tracy created a monthly subscription box at their request. Along with the variety of soap and shampoo bars, Amelia Island Soapery also offers artisan sugar scrubs, sea sponge soaps, bath bombs, shower steamers, hand soap, lotions, and hand sanitizer. If you’re looking for some good clean fun, grab your friends and plan a night out at Amelia Island Soapery making bath bombs. Bring your own wine or favorite drink, and they’ll provide the hors d’oeuvres. Follow the bubbles to their location at 25 South Third Street in downtown Fernandina Beach. Local artists were asked to share their talents and create images of some of Northeast Florida’s most memorable and beautiful sites. Four large, eyecatching paintings by Kathy Stark greet visitors entering the Fernandina Beach Library exhibition space. The exhibition also includes a “Jacksonville’s Sense of Place” video featuring drone footage by Tom Schifanella and still images by wellknown photographer Will Dickey. Friends of the Library, the nonprofit supporting our libraries, has been busy too. When Covid-19 closures challenged the scheduled Timucuan Parks Foundation’s 20th Anniversary art exhibition, Friends of the Library volunteer Christine Meehan stepped up and coordinated efforts to offer the exhibition virtually. The exhibit showcases the amazing collection of parks all close to our Amelia Island home. These include American Beach, Big and Little Talbot Island Parks, Amelia Island State Park, the George Crady Fishing Pier State Park, Cedar Point, and the Betz-Tiger Point Preserve. “Our parks and preserves are such an amazing asset, and we are all very lucky that they are in our backyard,” says Mark Middlebrook, executive director of Timucuan Parks Foundation. “The parks provide a sense of place and wellbeing for everyone while providing both physical and mental health benefits. We encourage everyone to take a tour of our parks, pick out your favorites and let us know what you think. Tag us @timucuanparks.” www.AmeliaIslander.com

ctober 2020 is a special month for Amelia Plantation Chapel, as it marks the 30th anniversary of the completion and dedication of its landmark sanctuary. For more than 1,500 Sundays, members of our community have gathered at Amelia Plantation Chapel to worship, study the Bible, witness the gospel of Christ, and seek to serve others. If you ask this body of parishioners, this is something to celebrate! Amelia Plantation Chapel has a humble history, as it was a chapel without a chapel for many years. Its roots extend to the mid-1970s, when Amelia Island Plantation was being developed and a small group of employees and property owners were hoping for a church on the south end of Amelia Island.

Although they came from diverse religious traditions, they were joined in their belief that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior. The group began to hold Sunday worship meetings wherever they could find a space, whether it was a storefront, the hotel lobby, or even the clubhouse. Ministers from local churches would join and lead the service. Bibles, hymnals, and other supplies were collected and transported each week in a rolling wooden chest they coined, “The Ark.” Within three years from the first gathering, they were 84 members strong and the fledgling adopted a constitution naming Amelia Plantation Chapel an interdenominational continued on next page

church. The congregation continued to grow, as did the need for a permanent place of worship and a full-time pastor. The dedicated parishioners established a building fund and an outreach program to grow their body of believers, and by 1986, the church was able to hire its first pastor. After much prayer, two years later, the church purchased a parcel of land located outside the entry gates to the residential areas of Amelia Island Plantation to make the Chapel welcome to all of Amelia Island. On September 3, 1989, a unique groundbreaking ceremony took place in which founding church members co-mingled soils from their home churches into the foundation of the planned building. The ceremony symbolized their diverse backgrounds and their unity in Christ. Today, on the two-acre site, a lovely building sits nestled in a wooded setting along a lagoon, complete with a large sanctuary, fellowship hall, and a serene memory garden. The property and building alike have distinctive characteristics that make this one of the most beautiful sanctuaries on the island. The crown jewel is the beveled glass cross in the chancel, which combined with clear glass side panels and windows down each side of the sanctuary welcome natural light and the surrounding nature

into the Chapel. A grateful congregation wishes to remember its roots and has sought to do just this over the past year with a yearlong emphasis on the early days and history of the chapel. On October 6, 2019, Amelia Plantation Chapel members replicated the original groundbreaking ceremony by blending soil from former and summertime churches to kickoff the commemoration. Once again, this ceremony symbolized the diverse backgrounds still represented in the interdenominational body of believers and the oneness of their desire to serve and worship God, honoring the same comingling of soils done 30 years ago. Other nods to the history of the Chapel included articles profiling founding members, along with a display of collected memory books with photographs, reminisces, newspaper articles, and more. Amelia Plantation Chapel had many more plans to celebrate this milestone, but like many activities in 2020, the schedule is postponed due to Covid-19 precautions. The family of Christ at the Chapel invites everyone to celebrate with them in 2021 when the activities are rescheduled, and in the meantime, all are invited to worship via their livestream each Sunday. hen a global pandemic squelched the dreams of many small business owners, seven Amelia Island women got together to figure out what to do. Together, they formed a unique marketing co-operative called High Tide Amelia Women’s Collective to create fun, energyfilled, inspiring programs and excursions for women, all while working together and supporting one another. “High Tide was created after watching the First Coast’s small businesses struggle through a total shutdown of business due to the pandemic,” says Anita Comisky, owner of Amelia Toffee Company. “There were so many changes in our lives, and many of us felt very isolated. In forming the collective, we were able to find new and creative ways to market our businesses and keep our doors open.”

Cunningham has been a respected yoga and wellness consultant with the Amelia Island Convention and Visitors Bureau, Crane Island Development and Community, and Seaside Amelia Inn. She has also helped create the content and programming for the Amelia Island Wellness Festival. “This is an ideal gift to give to yourself, a quiet day to breathe and restore your soul,” says Cunningham. “This is a virtual wellness event open to women across the country to step away from stress and step into a day of relaxation and rejuvenation via Zoom, highlighting some of the beauty of Amelia Island. Women of all ages can safely gather and participate in a day of mindful introspection, healing meditation, tranquility, and uplifting healing practices.” Breathe Retreat’s schedule of events includes Mindful Yoga, The Magic of Lavender, Prana Life Breath Workshop, Yoga Nidra Guided Meditation, and many more. The retreat will be held at Crane Island’s River House and broadcast virtually to participants throughout the day. To sign up for this event, visit the group’s event section on their Facebook page. W

e have now come to the beginning of the gardening season in Florida, and it is time to put all those “armchair” gardening ideas to good use. Let’s re-design, replant, start a new garden, or maybe add a fountain or birdbath. Whatever goes in the ground now will not only add color to your fall garden, but it will get a great head start on next season. So rise from your armchairs, get out your gardening tools, and let’s dig in! A real oldie-but-goodie in the garden is the beautiful Dianthus, with over 300 species of this awesome flower. Dianthus come in all shapes and sizes, including miniature varities that are 6 to 8 inches in height. These plants are also called Sweet William, Pinks (because the edges of the flower look like they have been cut with pinking shears), and Carnations. All of them have a pleasant, spicy fragrance. A very sweet new Dianthus in the American Pie series is called Georgia Peach Pie. This pretty plant has the palest blush pink blooms, with a coral eye in the center. Georgia Peach (PP) grows to 11 inches high and wide.

TIP OF T HE M O N T H When planting new plants, water them well and dig the hole twice the size of the pot. Plant in full sun, backfill, and plant it 1 to 2 inches above soil level. Water and add soil if needed.

The stems and foliage on this plant are blue-green and silvery grey. They are very pretty. The stems are sturdy, and the beautiful blooms sit on the top of these stems attracting your attention. Plant in well-drained soil, but use mulch in order to retain moisture. An evergreen plant, it will bloom year after year and can be used in borders, mass plantings, containers, and rock gardens. Personally, I would love to see them in an eye-catching mass. It’s a new Southern Living plant. A good ground cover is a new Rose called “It’s a Breeze.” This lovely evergreen rose is an attractive dark-red ground cover. The cup-like, double, dark-red blooms attract birds and butterflies. It is a re-bloomer, so it has continuous flowers from spring to fall.

“It’s a Breeze” is disease- and pest-resistant, as well as drought- and heat-tolerant, which makes this plant even more appealing. In addition, it has a compact rounded growth habit, growing 2.5 to 3 feet in height and 3 to 4 feet in width. This ground cover likes to be in full sun. Fertilize it after its first flowering and shape it in early spring before the first flush. Enjoy this new PP plant for years to come. This is a Southern Living plant, and it should become available in your local garden center. Another great ground cover is the Creeping Phlox. These beauties come in a variety of colors, creating a thick carpet of color in spring. In addition, with its evergreen foliage, there is always color year-round. These lovely plants bloom in April or May. This sturdy, low-maintenance plant is perfect for camouflaging unsightly and difficult areas in your landscape. Plant it in spring. If you have any questions, email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

or many of us, moving means bringing our past with us into our new home. One adventurous Amelia Island couple, however, decided not only to leave it all behind, but to fully embrace the unknown. Jean Drapeau and Leon Kumpe had been coming to Amelia Island for a few years at the recommendation of friends and colleagues who had moved here. Drawn to the community, they made the decision to move here permanently from south of Boston in 2017. “Our girls were grown and beginning their own careers. We were ready to downsize and embrace a simplified lifestyle,” says Jean. Jean and Leon found the ideal beachside home in Ocean Village. “It met all of our criteria: oceanfront, a small HOA, and a very relaxed and friendly community,” says Leon. The condo was outdated and in need of renovation. Hoping to create a modern look, they met with Jeffrey Barnes, an architect well-known for his contemporary style. 53 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

“It was time for a change, not just in location, but in the way we lived. I honestly feel the yoga and meditation I have done over the past 40 years contributed to my desire to get rid of the clutter and have a home that was minimalistic and always refreshing,” says Jean. The renovation centered on opening up the main living area, taking advantage of the high ceilings and bringing the extraordinary ocean views center stage. “Jeff refers to his design style as contemporary minimalism, where the emphasis is placed on maximizing open spaces with only essential furnishings,” says Jean. The loft area was redesigned as Leon’s man cave, and Jeff reshaped it using rounded corners and accents, giving it the subtle appearance of a marine vessel. Wood paneling with LED lighting was installed on the exposed two-story living room walls, adding texture and color while softening the starkness of the area. Another key feature are the oversized

wood doors in a luxurious wood frame, accented with more LED puck lighting. “These doors make a statement of the exceptional quality of our home. They are one of our favorite features,” Jean explains. Jeff and his partner, Joanie Michas, took the couple to Scan Design and IKEA in Jacksonville to select furniture and key space-saving furnishings. Designed to keep clutter at a minimum, IKEA cabinet units were installed, extending from the kitchen to the picture window. Remarkably, this extensive storage system is hidden from the eye by special opaque door panels that reflect the natural light coming off the beach. Another of IKEA’s innovative storage systems is utilized in the laundry room. The wall space would only allow cabinets with an 8-inch depth, so Jeff found modular units with pressure release doors that can store everything. This system is seamless and efficient. Lighting up the cabinets is a remote-controlled LED system. “I love the ability to light up a space with the touch of a button,” Jean explains. Scan Design’s sleek leather furniture in the main living area gives the entire space a modern European flair. “We found so many of our furnishings at this store. much I was drawn to the contemporary and luxurious appeal of their furnishings,” says Jean. The floors were a challenge. The living room furniture had been selected, and the flooring needed to blend in with the furnishings. Once again, Jeff and Joanie came to the rescue. “Joanie has a talent for matching and remembering color tones and hues. She found the perfect flooring. It is warm, yet neutral,” explains Jean. For the kitchen, Rick Mauer of Highland Kitchen and Bath installed cabinets that blended beautifully with the very modern kitchen. The challenge was making everything look seamless, especially with the rounded corners. The end-result is a spectacular kitchen for two people who love to cook, but don’t want any of the clutter. The condominium has four bedrooms, each with light grays and warm cream colors accented with a variety of textures and fabrics using geometric patterns. Minimalism is the theme, and these rooms showcase how inviting a modern style can be. Another aspect that is literally upside down from the norm is the innovative way the couple chose to enhance the views to the west. “We never liked the street, so we set the blinds at the 56 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

bottom of the windows. When needed, they raise up versus down. It was the ideal solution to enjoy the canopy of trees without seeing the road,” explains Jean. The four bathrooms use similar design elements, and the flow from one room to the next is masterfully done. Frosted glass showers are used in the two master baths. In Leon’s bathroom upstairs, Jeff enhanced the ocean views by creating an 8-inch high clear glass area that extends the length of the shower. For such a small feature, it makes a big impact. In addition, all four bathrooms incorporate a special tile with the texture and appearance of linen, which warms the cool color palette. Jean and Leon created a canvas that was primed for finishing touches. A lovely marsh scene painting from local gallery Art on Centre is mounted above a striking driftwood table from All Driftwood Furniture. Island Flower & Garden designed several permanent arrangements using marsh grasses from the beach dunes to bring a bit of the beach inside. Approaching their home with heart and enthusiasm, the couple ended up with a design unlike anything they would have imagined years ago. “Our home is such an inspiration to us both. We don’t live with clutter, and we spend our time doing what we love and being with our friends and family,” says Jean. 58 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

POGO’s Kitchen With a warm atmosphere, inventive cuisine, and the highest-quality ingredients, POGO’s Kitchen on the south end offers an exciting eating experience for lunch or dinner. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY CHRISTY LELAIT

P

OGO’s Kitchen is one of the island’s most exciting dining establishments. Located on the south end near American Beach, the restaurant has quickly made a name for itself. Known for quality and superb ingredients, the staff at POGO’s is taking that dedication to the community every week in the form of hundreds of 5-star dinners packaged to-go for the Council on Aging. Rather than hold back, Chef Alan Rickman and his staff are offering those in need the same kind of quality on which

they have built their name. On a recent evening, I met up with my sister, Kelley Allgood, to see what was new. We were greeted warmly at the door and escorted to our seats. While we were getting acquainted with the menu, Asa Alderson, one of my students, came out from the kitchen to say hello. Asa is in an incredible place to learn, as Chef Alan Rickman loves to pass on his knowledge. He has been featured at the James Beard House and reviewed in the New York Times. Every meal at POGO’s begins with their signature boiled peanut hummus with grilled pita. Scented with sesame oil and 60 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

topped with crushed peanuts, it is a fabulous introduction to the meal. Soon our first courses came out. Kelley selected the Seared Halloumi Cheese, a semi-hard brined cheese with a high melting point, making the halloumi perfect for grilling or searing. The dish is served with compressed watermelon and heirloom tomatoes. I selected the Carbonara Ravioli, an incredible dish of handmade ravioli filled with sweet pea puree and topped with pancetta and a sous vide egg. This dish is worth the trip all by itself. Both of these dishes paired perfectly with the Rutherford Ranch Savignon Blanc, the crisp citrus notes offering the perfect accompaniment for the nuanced flavors of the cheese and the ravioli. As a special treat, the chef surprised us with an order of Roasted Cauliflower. One could be forgiven for imagining this as a less-than-stellar gift, but that would be a mistake. The large florets of cauliflower are coated with a Korean-style glaze and finished with lime and cilantro. Beneath the florets is a luscious puree of cauliflower that acted as a rich and creamy sauce, the whole dish shining a bright light on an underappreciated vegetable. Our entrees arrived, and once again we were overwhelmed. I enjoyed the Szechuan Spiced Duck, seared and served with Chinese broccoli atop a crisp scallion pancake. The duck was tender and decadent, the crisp crunch of the pancake and the fresh vegetable changing up the texture. Kelley enjoyed the Seared Scallop entrée, served on housemade ramen noodles with seared pork belly and charred onion. These dishes paired perfectly with a Ken Wright Pinot Noir, not too rich for the scallop, but full bodied enough to handle the rich pork belly and the strong Szechuan flavors. We ended our meal with a Pecan Tart topped with a bruleed meringue and served with a scoop of homemade ice cream and peanut brittle. Please save room for dessert, you will not regret it. Located at 1408 Lewis Street, POGO’s Kitchen is open for lunch and dinner through the week and brunch on Sundays. Reservations can be made on their website at pogoskitchen.com.

backyard adventure called “Pine Island.” As I drove into the Carey preserve, it brought back happy memories of four-wheeling, trail riding, and jogging through just this sort of place when I was young. From our parking spot beside the immaculately clean bathhouse, multiple trail signs aroused our curiosity. Cary State Forest offers a variety of recreational opportunities, including hiking, RV and primitive camping, wildlife viewing, horseback riding, environmental education, and hunting. Bicycling, hiking and horseback riding are permitted on forest roads and fire lines, and there are also two designated horseback-riding trails.

n Amelia Island, we enjoy access to an abundance of state and national parks, including Fort Clinch State Park, Big and Little Talbot Island State Parks, Amelia Island State Park, Fort George Island Cultural State Park, Kingsley Plantation, Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, and Cumberland Island National Seashore. Today, my family and I ve ventured a bit off the beaten path to enjoy another hidden gem in Fl Florida’s state park system with a vi visit to Cary State Forest, which sp spans the Nassau County/Duval C County line in Bryceville. A short d drive west on SR 200 and US 301, it it’s about an hour from Amelia Is Island to the park. The wildlife m management area includes 111,319 acres of beautiful Florida w woods and wetlands, which offer aample opportunities to hike, bbike, picnic, camp, and if you h have a horse, trail ride! Established as Florida’s second state forest in 1937, Cary State Forest is known for its scenic mature flatwoods, wet flatwoods, sandhills, basin swamps, and cypress domes. The forest is managed for timber production, wildlife habitat, outdoor recreation, and ecological restoration. We were ready for a wild Florida adventure, and a trip to Cary State Park is exactly that. I grew up 70 miles south of Amelia Island in a community that consisted of hunting clubs called “Flatwoods” and hangouts 76 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

The forest is open during daylight hours for visitors to enjoy picnicking, walking, fishing, and just enjoying the great outdoors. The trails are wide and manicured with low-cut green grass and plenty of trail signs. Where you cross the cypress swamps, there are beautiful boardwalks that wind through the abundance of nature for about 1.2 miles. For wildlife lovers, you’ll see a lot of well-known Florida animals in their natural habitat. Species found in the forest include an abundance of birds such as pileated woodpeckers, great horned and barred owls, and yellow-throated vireos, as well as gopher tortoise, otter, wild hogs, pinewood tree frogs, and various venomous and non-venomous snakes. If you get lucky, you might even see white-tailed deer, alligator, bobcat, fox, and wild turkey. After a peaceful hike enjoying the sounds of the forest, I recommend packing a picnic and enjoying the well-maintained gathering spaces in the park. There is a beautiful pavilion filled with picnic tables, which can be reserved by the public, as well as open-air spaces and charcoal grills. Both improved primitive and recreational vehicle campsites are available at the Cary Campground, and the Cary group camp has a 100-person capacity for youth group camping. Restroom and shower facilities are available via a short hike from each campsite. Campground reservations can be made on the Reserve America website or by calling (877) 879-3859. With cooler air on its way, Carey State Forest is a great family-fun destination that’s not too far from home.
