ISLANDER

Our goal has always been to highlight some of the fabulous finds available at our local shops during the holiday season, whether you are buying for yourself or for someone special on your gift list.

Philip Kelly Deana Basile Kelly Publishers and Editors Tom Barrett Art Director Mark O’Day Advertising Sales

Every November, as the holiday season approaches, we take great pleasure in presenting our annual holiday gift-buying guide in the Islander. Our goal has always been to highlight some of the fabulous finds available at our local shops during the holiday season, whether you are buying for yourself or for someone special on your gift list. We hope that you can find a chance to sit back with a cup of coffee or tea and spend a little time looking through some of these great gift ideas. Armed with some up-to-the-minute local shopping recon, you may be able to save yourself an unpleasant road trip to the big-city shopping mall, with its frenzied pace and sensory overload, and instead get more of your shopping done locally. By frequenting our neighborhood shops, you’ll find friendly, personal service and a wide selection of unique gift items, not to mention that you’ll be supporting the friends and neighbors who are our local merchants. You’ll probably also run into someone to share a coffee or some holiday cheer with, which is always one of the joys of the holiday season. Of course, however hectic our holiday schedules become, the most important part of this season remains the time that we find to spend with our families and friends. The Amelia Island community is a warm and welcoming place, and never more so than around the holidays, when the spirit of giving moves so many to donate generously of their time and treasure. It is truly a season to be grateful for the most precious gifts of family, friendship, and community. In our Island Home column once again this year, we are very fortunate to offer a preview of the 2013 Amelia Island Museum of History Holiday Home Tour, an important fundraiser for this outstanding community resource. This year’s tour is many months in the making, and it promises to be another fabulous and fun-filled weekend. Many generous volunteers and donors have been working long hours to make this much-anticipated event the best yet, and we hope that everyone in the community will enjoy it. Also in this issue, we are grateful for the opportunity to spotlight the excellent work that Take Stock in Children Nassau accomplishes each year with at-risk youth. Through a combination of scholarship support and personal mentoring, Take Stock in Children is able to offer promising low-income students a path to college and a rewarding career. We also take a look at Amelia Island Montessori School, which celebrates 40 successful years of innovative education this year. In addition, we have some interesting recommendations for new flavored spirits and sparkling wines for your holiday entertaining, and much more. See you around the island!

AMELIA ISLAND’S ANNUAL HOLIDAY COOKIE TOUR OF INNS

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS ANNUAL BENEFIT DINNER AND CONCERT The Boys & Girls Clubs of Nassau County will present their 7th Annual Benefit Dinner and Concert, their major fund-raising event of the year, at 6 pm on Saturday, January 18 at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. The event features Michael Amante, the nationally acclaimed performer of pop rock, jazz, classical, and Broadway music. The evening includes a cocktail reception, dinner, and an auction. Amante’s career as a singer and actor has made him a favorite of audiences around the world. His recording credits include six albums, with a seventh titled Here is Love to be released shortly. Michael is well-known on and offBroadway for his leading roles in West Side Story, Jesus Christ Superstar, Grease, and Li’l Abner, as well as in Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, La Boh me, and Cavalleria Rusticana. Activities at the two Nassau County Boys & Girls Clubs revolve around five core areas: academics, health and life skills, character and leadership development, the arts, and organized athletics. The Nassau County Clubs boast members who rank in the top of their school classes. Tickets may be purchased for $150 by calling (904) 261-8666 or at www.bgcnassau.org.

Stroll through the historic district or along the beach while sampling a signature cookie at each Inn. Take home a beautifully printed recipe card and view great decorating ideas just in time for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Horse-drawn carriage rides will be available in the Historic District between each downtown Inn. Trolley rides will be available from the downtown area to the Inn at the beach. Tours begin at any of the seven bed and breakfast inns. Proceeds from ticket and cookbook sales will benefit Friends of the Library’s campaign for the downtown Fernandina Beach Branch Library. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online or at the Amelia Island Bed and Breakfast Inns, the Amelia Island Visitors Center, Fernandina Beach Branch Library, and the AIFBY Chamber of Commerce. ISLAND CHAMBER SINGERS PRESENT MOZART’S REQUIEM To celebrate their 10th anniversary season with style, the Island Chamber Singers will perform Mozart’s Requiem accompanied by a 10-piece orchestra on November 22 and 24 at the Amelia Island Plantation Chapel. In addition to the Requiem, which was commissioned by Count Franz von Walsegg as a tribute to his wife on the anniversary of her death, the November concert will feature six of Mozart’s vocal nocturnes that were written as entertainment music for parties in the 18th century. The concert will take place at Amelia Island Plantation Chapel on Friday, November 22, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, November 24, at 3 p.m. An opening night reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall immediately following Friday evening’s performance. Tickets are $15 for adults when purchased in advance of concert day. n the 1970’s, the Island Art Association (IAA) sprang from a small group of local artists with a vision in Fernandina Beach. In 2001, IAA purchased property at 18 N. 2nd Street and its members converted it into an artist-owned and -operated gallery and meeting place. Today, the Island Art Association is a thriving gallery and cultural center. Each month, the IAA features a different artist, welcoming them with an opening reception during the Second Saturday Artrageous Artwalk. November’s artist is Susan Sellner, a former teacher from Chicago who has been painting for only three years. “My whole life I had dreams of becoming an artist, but never had the opportunity to take classes,” says Sellner. Self taught, Sellner bases her constant improvement on the encouragement she’s received from other area artists. She is also passionate about working with rescue animals, volunteering at Nassau County Animal Services since 2010 after moving to Fernandina. Eventually, she began painting portraits

of the dogs she was working with, as well as local pets. Her paintings were wellreceived, and to date, she has created 46 commissioned animal portraits, plus a calendar, and has raised over $7000 for local rescue groups from the sale of her work. Sellner’s work is quite varied as she is still trying to find her voice as an artist, and being a teacher, she discovered that another passion: helping children create art. The Island Art Association shares her passion, offering free art classes to children. “One of the reasons I was drawn to the Island Art Association was its mission to nurture art in our community. I love that I can be part of helping children share my passion for art.” Sellner’s opening reception will be held November 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. and will include a soup, salad, and dessert dinner. To RSVP for the dinner, call (904) 261-5160. For more information about the artist, visit: www.susansellner.com. Visit www.islandart.com for information about their upcoming events.

Lori Lecker with Lulu’s little sister, Gigi

P

eggy Horton and Bonnie Johnson purchased Southern Touch on Centre Street after the untimely death of their dear friend, Lorraine Corbett, who owned the shop for 30 years. The retail store, which featured many of Lorraine’s own handcrafted items, has been a Centre Street icon for years. When Peggy and Bonnie acquired the store in 2009, they wanted to keep the same Southern warm and welcoming feeling created by Lorraine, but add their own touches and personalities. Southern Touch originally opened where the former Beech Street Grill now stands. At the time, Peggy owned a game and hobby shop on Centre Street called The Gamekeeper, and she and Lorraine became friends because both enjoyed offering classes: mahjong at The Gamekeeper and arts and crafts at Southern Touch. Bonnie’s connection to Lorraine came through St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, where both were members. Peggy and Bonnie became friends through Amelia Community Theatre, and that’s what brought them together to purchase the store. Besides the famous collectible Christmas ornaments they carry each year, the store also has many delightful items for holiday giving, such as pottery, Crabtree & Evelyn products, jewelry, cards, and home décor. Peggy and Bonnie have also added a line of gourmet kitchen products. Just outside of the shop is a bench dedicated to Lorraine, “The Southern Touch Lady,” where customers can take a seat, reflect on the memory of their friend, and enjoy the store she created so many years ago. For more information, call (904) 261-5377 or visit them on Facebook.

Lori + Lulu

ori Lecker and her husband, John, first got the idea to open a store in downtown Fernandina Beach while enjoying a late night dinner at España Restaurant. Chef Roberto suggested that bringing an upscale clothing concept to Amelia Island might work very well. The couple decided to do just that, and their shop, lori + lulu, opened six months ago in the Three Star Saloon building on Centre Street. “Our concept is ‘laid-back luxury lifestyle’”, says Lori, “and we have incorporated brands that appeal to all ages, with an emphasis on the middle-age group. Having worked in retail with Benetton for 25 years, I realized that there was a huge niche in the market for casual, clean looks with a modern edge that did not look ‘old’. We simply developed a concept that fit that niche.” Featured luxury brands include Three Dots, Barbara Lesser, AG, and Paige. The one question that every customer asks is, “Who is Lulu?” Lori explains: “Lulu was a beautiful Bichon Frise, whom we lost last year to a rare form of cancer. Lulu was truly a dream dog and was pure joy to us for 15 years. For years, I had been trying to come up with a name for a store and would find out someone else already did it. After Lulu passed, it all hit me! Make it personal! I figured Lori + Lulu = pure love and joy, and a name was born. Every time I see the logo, it just makes me smile! And the atmosphere in the store is a reflection of that, as well.” For more information, call (904) 310-9507 or visit lori + lulu’s Facebook page for daily fashion photos and to see their latest arrivals.

By providing scholarships to college and guidance from caring mentors, Take Stock helps Florida’s at-risk youth find hope for a better future. “Take Stock in Children Nassau helps Nassau County’s academically-promising, low-income students earn a four year college tuition scholarship and make a successful transition to college,” says Gartenbush. “My own mentor, Sara Benzel, guided me from 2002 to 2007, and then I received a scholarship through TSIC.” Here’s how the program works: students submit applications while in middle school, and, if accepted into Take Stock in Children Nassau—along with their parents or guardians —they sign performance agreements, promising to maintain a 2.5 GPA, have good school attendance, remain drug and crime free, and meet with their mentor weekly. In addition, the students receive a student advocate who provides monitoring and case management services, early intervention when needed, academic tutoring by qualified volunteers, and referrals to resources within the community. Take Stock in Children Nassau embraces the student from enrollment in middle school through high school, college, and into the workforce. Take Stock’s Program Director Jody Mackle has witnessed students grow, thrive, and become successful adults. “Watching the students grow up in TSIC, then following them into the working world, is very gratifying,” says Mackle, who has been with Take Stock for 13 years. “Our students are encouraged to follow their dreams, and they do.” She adds that two graduates have become engineers, two have become nurses, another works for an aviation company, and another works for Xerox, just a few of the program’s many success stories.

Presently there are 150 children and 150 mentors in the Take Stock Nassau program. Two of the mentors are Judy and Bob Schmonsees, who are currently mentoring a brother and sister, Kenny and MaKenzie Gammons from Yulee. “We work with great kids,” says Bob. “It’s rewarding to see them grow. We provide them with a different set of ears. They really open up to us, and our conversations become more substantive and meaningful as we go along.” On December 5, Take Stock in Children Nassau will hold their annual event, Light Up a Life, at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation. Their biggest fundraiser of the year, Light up a Life helps support additional services and events for students and

mentors. “Last year, we managed to raise $27,000, and this year we hope to increase that amount to $32,000,” says Gartenbush. “We hope to have 300 attendees this year.” The event’s keynote speaker is the Honorable Judge Robert M. Foster, who has dealt with many young people over the years. Light Up a Life will be held in the Omni’s new ballroom, and feature a formal dinner party with wine, a cash bar, and silent auction. Tickets are $75 per person, with reduced rates for table sponsors. For more information or to purchase tickets call (904) 548-4464, or visit www.takestocknassau.org.

She attended the school as a child, and now her own children are students at the school. She has been a Montessori teacher there for the last five years. “We learned how to start and finish a sequence, which is so important in the real world. To work on a project and see it through to completion.” “Montessori is amazing,” says Edie, Sadler’s 10-year-old daughter. “We learn so many cool skills.” She goes on to say she learned counting and multiplication when she was only four years old. And now, at 10, she loves long division, and enjoys learning new things. A fortieth anniversary is a big accomplishment and a cause for celebration. On Saturday, December 7, Amelia Island Montessori School will be hosting a special Ruby Jubilee Gala at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort to celebrate their past achievements and work toward continued success. This year’s Gala’s presenting sponsor is Amelia Island Plantation Real Estate, the same business which has partnered with the school since 1973. Money raised for the Amelia Island Montessori School sustains the cost of operating the school, but it is also used for their scholarship programs. “Every year, we try to help more families with our scholarship program,” says Phyllis Rouse, head of the Montessori School. Tuck in some sweet potato vines around the edges and let them hang over the pot. The contrasting colors are striking. I had a wonderful time at the annual Growers Association Show and viewed lots of beautiful new plants for 2014, many of which I will be introducing to you in the months ahead. One item that caught my eye was the new zoysia grass. I wanted to take off my shoes and go barefoot on it! This new zoysia is called Geo. It is a fine-bladed zoysia grass with a deep green color. Geo is one of the most beautiful turf grasses you will find. It has good to excellent shade tolerance compared to other zoysias and it is extremely wear tolerant, making this a top choice for golf courses as well as residential lawns. This grass has excellent heat tolerance, tolerates cold, shade, and drought,

TIP O F T HE M O N T H You can plant spring flowering bulbs now. To speed decomposition for compost or mulch, shred leaves with your mower before collecting them. and is also salt-tolerant. It is disease resistant, recovers well after injury, and good on wear-and-tear. Geo grass is very soft and can be mowed 1 - 2 inches in height. Because the Geo turf is so dense and tightly packed, it also provides effective weed control. Firespike is not a new plant, but if you want a real showy plant that blooms from late summer through the winter, this is it. It has flowers blooming on spikes that produce abundant 9 - 12 inch upright panicles of brilliant red tubular flowers. The individual flowers are about one inch long and symmetrical. A cluster of these wonderful plants will make a bold statement. This plant is also great

43 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • NOVEMBER 2013

at attracting lovely little hummingbirds. Firespike prefers a semi-shady area, with part sun/part shade. It can grow in full sun, but does better with a little shade. In a hard freeze, this plant will freeze to the ground, but, come spring, it will sprout up in all its glory. Try to avoid windy locations when planting it, as its branches are not strong enough to withstand high winds. However, it can survive cold or wind damage. Give this plant a hard pruning in spring for size, then let it grow out to form a natural shape. This shrub can get a bit floppy around the edges so cut off side branches now and then if needed. You can also plant it close enough to other shrubs to bolster the sides, and this can help protect it from cold and wind. Water regularly, in spring, summer and autumn with a granular fertilizer. You may want to supplement feedings with bone-meal and/or liquid fertilizer to promote heavier bloom. Best wishes to all for a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving! As always, please e-mail me at bamorrell@aol.com with any questions. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

very year at Christmas, the Amelia Island Museum of History offers residents and visitors from far and wide alike the unique opportunity to tour some of the beautiful homes in Fernandina Beach’s Historic District. Five properties will be open Friday December 6 and Saturday December 7 from 10am to 4pm this year. The Museum and its Holiday Home Tour committee endeavor each year to find very special homes that offer historical significance and interesting décor, and all are brightly decorated for the holiday season by island decorators and designers. Carla Foreman, chairman of Holiday Home Tour 2013, emphasizes the importance of the annual fundraiser. “It is the

primary fundraiser for our museum each year. It has become more and more difficult to attract and find grant money. If we want to continue to offer the highest level of programming, exhibitions, and outreach, we must as a community support this important annual event, the Amelia Island Museum Holiday Home Tour.” In years past, a luncheon option has been offered. Last year’s event at the Museum featuring C. Brett Carter was so successful that it is being offered this year at Brett’s Waterway Café, the popular restaurateur and decorator’s restaurant on the harbor. The event promises to offer tempting and tasty food, creative decorating, entertaining tips, and fabulous door prizes.

Back by popular demand, this year’s breakfast event is sure to offer lots of surprises. Seating is limited. But make no mistake: the centers of attention for the tour are the amazing homes that will open their doors for one weekend only. Four of the homes are splendid examples of period architecture built between 1876 and 1903. Docents, dressed in period costume, will share the carefully researched history of each of the homes. Free trolley transportation will be available to take people from house to house, to the museum, and from Brett’s Waterway Cafe.

house with its wide variety of detailing, windows and its generous wrap around porch. A bit of whimsey remains on display year around— carousel horses first added one holiday season when the house was open as a bed and breakfast. It is one of many bride house in the historic district. Built by Effingham Bailey for his bride Kate, it remains one of the most beautiful Victorian era homes in the Historic District.

30 NORTH 6TH STREET Built in 1891 by local dentist W.E. Snyder, the house was both his office and his home. The house is architecturally noteworthy for its Queen Anne double doors and richly ornamented veranda. The downstairs windows all have their original glass. The home once served as the manse for the First Presbyterian Church across the street.

Built in 1909, this house offers many details typical of the quality in construction that prevailed. Hardwood floors in the original home were milled in St. Augustine in 1909. Additional floors were reclaimed from a New York City subway station. The front entrance has a transom over the front entrance and ornate porch detail.

The something new in this year’s Holiday Home Tour is a house carefully designed to fit comfortably in its historic neighborhood. The vernacular-style home is just one block off historic Centre Street. Designed by Amelia Island architect John Cotner and built in 2012, it has a “vintage soul.” Reclaimed wood is used throughout in doors,

THE

Crab Trap With an expanded menu of fresh seafood and steaks, this long-time Amelia Island favorite is a great destination for lunch or dinner. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

T

he Crab Trap is a long-standing piece of history, a familyowned and -operated restaurant for over 34 years, located in the Seydel Building on North 2nd Street. Opened on Shrimp Festival weekend in 1979, its goal has always been to offer the best and freshest seafood and steaks. To last for that length of time, the Germano family has definitely been doing something right! I recently made a date with the restaurant’s new sales and events manager, Tanner Garrard, to have lunch at The Crab Trap, and I was in for a treat. Tanner and I began our meal with The Crab Trap’s famous Fresh Blue Crab Soup. I say “famous” because this soup is truly a representation of the restaurant’s staying power. It has been on the menu for years, and it is prepared the same way it was 25 years ago. In my opinion, this is how crab soup should be done. It is rich and satisfying, loaded with crab, very buttery, and not too thick. This is not bisque, but a true seafood soup. It’s great for lunch or dinner, especially as the weather gets cooler. The Crab Trap is switching up their menu a bit, as restaurants do from time-to-time, to offer new varieties of fresh seafood and steaks, including flounder, grouper, African pompano, salmon, and sheepshead, all available as the market can provide. I tried the Combination Platter, where one can choose shrimp, oysters, or fish. I decided on the pompano, grilled, and shrimp, blackened. The dish came with savory saffron rice, steamed yellow squash, two hushpuppies, and homemade coleslaw. The fish and shrimp were perfectly cooked, and there was a sweet and spicy coconut

rum dipping sauce alongside, a specialty of the house. The Crab Trap’s hushpuppies are sweet, crispy outside and moist and steamy inside. The platter was really delicious, and I loved that I could choose vegetables instead of fries. Their cole slaw is made in-house and it’s one of the best on the island. Tanner ordered a lunch on the lighter side, tender chicken breast served on a grilled tortilla with lettuce, tomato, onion, and American cheese. I tried Tanner’s wrap and it was very tasty. The way it was grilled added a lot of flavor. I also tried a Key Lime Martini, a new drink at The Crab Trap and it was really special. Made with real key lime juice, pineapple rum, and Absolute Vanilla, shaken, it was a masterpiece! This drink was not overly sweet, a fine Florida version of that traditional classic. After a taste of the martini, I knew we would have to order a slice of Key Lime Pie. The Crab Trap’s Key Lime Pie is also one of their specialties. It’s a custard-based pie, super tart, served with fresh whipped cream, and a wonderful ending to any meal. If you are as fond of this dessert as I am, you’ll be happy to know that you can also purchase a whole pie to take home with you! The Crab Trap has a few new things coming this fall and winter, like wine and spirit tastings, and live music upstairs in their newly renovated bar, which has great sunset views. Their steak selection now also includes Delmonicos, rib-eyes, New York strips, and petite sirloins. The restaurant is open for lunch, dinner, and special events.

island entertaining

holiday spirits New flavored spirits and sparkling wines add sparkle to your holiday entertaining. BY KAREN MILLER

W

hen the holidays roll around, I’m always eager to host a party. But, as much as I love to cook and serve gourmet food, I know very little about spirits. Whenever I enter my local liquor stores, the array of bottles confuses me. What should I buy? What do people drink these days? And how much do I need to buy? Fortunately, Amelia Island’s local spirit shops are ready to help me get into the spirit of holiday party giving. Just as I ask my local butcher for the right cut of beef, a spirit shop will point me in the best direction to satisfy my holiday party guests. Mitchell Wickless manages Five Points Package Store, and when I came into his store to purchase a few bottles for my party, he was visiting with Clyde Gantt and Steven Helmes, local wine and spirit vendors. The three let me pick their brains about holiday spirits, and they offered me lots of great suggestions. “There are many new flavors out there for the holidays,” says Wickless. “We recommend Pinnacle Vodka’s amazing varieties, like Peach Berry Cobbler, Pumpkin Pie, or Caramel Apple. Bailey’s Irish Cream also has a new Vanilla Cinnamon flavor that is delicious.” Helmes suggests that women often prefer sweeter drinks and interesting drink combination, like martinis. “The liquor companies try to keep it fresh and new. The crazy flavors are great. Lots of women won’t drink regular whiskey or plain vodka, but they’ll try a specialty drink, especially at a party.” A bottle of spirits or wine also makes a great gift for anyone on your

list. Five Points offers frequent spirit tastings, and customers can check with the store for their next event. After I’ve armed myself with several bottles of spirits, I head over to Amelia Liquors for some wine, my personal favorite beverage. How do I choose wine? Frankly, I always rely on advice from friends, and that includes Bob Montgomery, wine buyer at Amelia Liquors. Every Friday afternoon from 3 to 6 p.m., Montgomery offers a wine tasting at both Amelia Liquors locations, featuring both white and red wine. He has great advice on what wines pair well with certain foods, and makes suggestions on what people are drinking these days. “For the holidays, I highly recommend sparkling wines and champagnes,” says Montgomery. “Everyone loves bubbles, and it’s a great first drink to offer your guests when they come to your home.” He points out several varieties that are fantastic choices for under $20 per bottle, and I am drawn to Roederer Estate. I figure that each bottle contains 6 modest glasses of bubbly, so if I’m giving a party for 12, I would need two bottles as a welcome drink. Because I want my guests to drink responsibly, I usually plan on three drinks per person, and serve plenty of non-alcoholic beverages for those who don’t drink and the designated drivers. At my bar, I use reasonably sized glasses to serve my drinks, and my guests can always come back for more.
