We take great pleasure in offering the Islander’s Holiday Gift Guide issue each year because we are proud to showcase all the fabulous shops Amelia Island has to offer.

”
As the holiday season approaches, it seems everyone slowly begins to succumb to the joy of the season, or what is better described as its “magic.” Even an uncompromising literalist has to acknowledge that something special is in the air this time of year. It all starts with Thanksgiving, which, in addition to turkey and stuffing, offers us the welcome opportunity to stop and acknowledge how much we have to be grateful for. There’s some serious magic in that. Then, after Thanksgiving, we swing right into the holiday shopping season (or perhaps much earlier than Thanksgiving, if you are really on the ball). There are many joys of the holiday season, and one of them is certainly the exchange of gifts with those close to us. For many, shopping for gifts is itself a great joy, and we concur. Finding just the right gift for someone special is a wonderful experience, and we enjoy shopping most of all when we do it right here on Amelia Island. When we present our annual Holiday Gift Guide each November, we can see clearly how each year offers a wider array of exciting shopping possibilities at new stores and at all of our old favorites. We take great pleasure in offering the Islander’s Holiday Gift Guide each year because we are proud to showcase all the fabulous shops Amelia Island has to offer. We hope that you’ll relax with a cup of coffee or tea and spend a little time perusing these wonderful gift ideas. Perhaps we’ll even save you that decidedly un-joyful annual trip to the frenetic and unwelcoming big-city shopping mall. When you visit your friends and neighbors in Amelia Island’s fine shops, you’ll discover great personal service and a wide variety of unique gifts. In our Island Home column once again this year, we are very pleased to offer a preview of the 2014 Amelia Island Museum of History Holiday Home Tour, an important fundraiser for this outstanding community resource. Each year, the tour is many months in the making, and it promises to be another festive and fun-filled weekend. Many generous volunteers and donors are working uncounted hours to make this much-anticipated event the best yet, and we hope that everyone in the community has a chance to enjoy it. Also in this issue, we are happy to preview a new project from Stephan Leimberg, Dickie Anderson, and Marsha Phelts, who have partnered to capture a unique time in the evolution of American Beach through the portraits and stories of its residents. An exhibit is planned at the American Beach Museum, and a book is in progress. We also look at the upcoming Petanque America Open, which offers lots of fun and some great food, another “Great Home of Fernandina” from Dickie Anderson, some ideas for holiday wines and spirits, and much more. See you around the island!

CARS OF THE COWBOYS COMING TO THE CONCOURS On March 15, 2015, the 20th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance will display the eclectic and eccentric cars customized and modified to promote America’s movie and TV cowboys with the highly anticipated “Cars of the Cowboys” class. In true “Amelia” tradition, the Amelia Concours will put fun ahead of fashion as they showcase legendary cowboy vehicles at The Golf Club of Amelia Island and The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. Featured will be rare vehicles like Leo Carillo’s (Pancho, from The Cisco Kid TV series) 1948 Chrysler Town and Country “Steer Car,” and cowboy movie star Tom Mix’s death car, a 1938 Supercharged Cord convertible. Roy Rogers’ Pontiac by Nudie Cohn will also be in attendance and will take center stage alongside Dale Robertson’s 1958 “Tales of Wells Fargo” Buick Limited convertible. “This is the first gathering of Cowboy Cars at a major international Concours,” said Bill Warner, Founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. “We hope to retrieve a few happy memories for the grown-up kids of the 1950s, who can bring their children and grandchildren to Amelia to see something that was such a fun part of our lives.” For more information, you can visit www.ameliaconcours.org.

usan McCarthy’s grandparents lived in a trailer park when she was a young girl, and visiting them was one of her favorite things to do. “It was a nice place,” says McCarthy. “I always remember how the neighbors and families would get together. What fond memories I have of those days!” Trailer park life has stayed with her over the years, so when McCarthy decided to open an antiques and collectibles shop in Fernandina Beach, Trailer Park Collectibles seemed like the perfect name. McCarthy is no first-timer to business on Amelia Island, however. She and her husband, Brian, owned the Down Under Restaurant for many years. And while she loved the restaurant business, Susan also knew she had a knack for shopping at estate sales and thrift shops. She opened up Trailer Park Collectibles on Alachua Street seven years ago, and five years ago moved the business to Centre Street, where she took over a portion of the building that was formerly Eileen’s Art and Antiques. In April this year, McCarthy took over the entire building, and Trailer Park Collectibles has truly come into its own.
And why are so many people buying older furniture and decorative items these days? McCarthy attributes it to a creative force that is present in decorating these days. Because of that spark in creativity, McCarthy has recently added a line of Farmhouse Paint, a top-notch brand that is so easy and effortless to use that anyone can enjoy painting with professional results. There is no prep, wax, or topcoat needed with Farmhouse Paint. It cleans up with water, provides a smooth, sandable surface, and great adhesion. McCarthy will be offering painting classes to the public beginning in November, demonstrating to clients how to get those professional results we love in painted furniture. McCarthy also knows that not everyone has the good fortune she has found, and she charges a very low rental fee for space in her shop to Noah’s Ark and Cat’s Angels. “We help these places showcase their best pieces and help them raise more money,” says McCarthy. For more information, call (904) 491-4461 or visit their website at www.trailerparkcollectibles.com.

hen Jason Hambrecht saw how difficult it was for people to stop smoking, he wanted to do something about it. “We all know people who struggle with nicotine addiction,” says Hambrecht, President and CEO of Construction Solutions Inc., a local engineering firm. “When I first heard about vaping, an alternative to smoking, I thought it would be a way to help family, friends, and others quit smoking,” says Hambrecht. He contacted his friend, Sean Reynosa, and shared his idea about a vape shop on Amelia Island. Hambrecht and his wife, Jenny, did their research, and Speakeasy Vaporium opened in August. The interior décor is based on a 1930s speakeasy. Vaping is the term for inhaling vapor through a vaporizer or electronic cigarette. Vapor is generated through a heating element, which warms the liquid and turns it into vapor, not smoke. The vapor is available in a wide variety of flavors. Some contain nicotine, some do not. Vaping allows smokers to cut back on their nicotine consumption slowly, and not suffer the usual withdrawal. “Even doctors locally have sent patients to the store as an opportunity to stop smoking,” says Reynosa, the store manager. “We’ve had numerous success stories already!” Clients are welcome to sample over 70 flavors before they purchase. Speakeasy holds social, informational events periodically, which also serve as a support group for those who are trying to give up smoking. For more information and store hours, visit 1925 South 14th Street, their Facebook page, or www.speakeasyvaporium.com.
isa Dockery had a career in information technology when she decided to make a drastic change in her profession: she started an online business creating artisan greeting cards, something that had been her passion since childhood. Opening up her shop, The Nested Turtle, with her boyfriend, Kevin Cornett, was the next step in growing their business from selling online and at arts markets. “People often ask us how we came up with the name for our shop,” says Lisa. “It was easy for us once we started thinking about what we loved – paper and wood. Together, our love of paper and wood is helping us to build our little nest, and the turtle in the nest, well, that comes from our quirky, whimsical side.” While Lisa creates cards, stationery, gift tags, and bags, Kevin uses hand tools to create items from wood, such as serving trays, candleholders, and furniture. Besides their Fernandina Beach store front, they also have two web sites, and they sell wholesale to other businesses. “We offer a wide array of greeting cards and personalized stationery, as well as home decor items such as candles and kitchenware,” says Lisa. “Our gift items range from bath and body products to woodturned pens and electronic cases for your tablet or laptop, and ninety percent of our items are handmade. In addition, since all Nested Turtle branded paper products are designed and crafted in-house, we can customize most items to meet your needs.” Visit their shop at 25 South Third Street, their web site at www.nestedturtle.com, or call them at (904) 310-3072.

A Moment in Time Founders and families of Amelia Island’s American Beach BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PORTRAITS BY STEPHAN LEIMBERG
IN 1935, the Afro-American Life Insurance Company purchased thirty-three acres along the Atlantic Ocean on Amelia Island and named it American Beach. It became an enclave for African Americans who wished to vacation on the beaches of north Florida, and many of those visitors
built homes. A community within a community, American Beach, with its unique history, continues to be treasured by the descendants of those families who first built houses there and by those who later discovered its magic and now make it home.
Sollie Mitchell

Marsha Dean Phelts
inety-six year-old Sollie Mitchell has been coming to American Beach since 1935. His first visit was on a Sunday school picnic with Second Baptist Church of Jacksonville. After his marriage to Mary Barnett in 1951, the Barnett-Mitchell families expanded their investments in American Beach properties. Mitchell, with his brother-in-law, Maurice Barnett, developed vacation homes and vacation rentals on land at the base of Nana Dune on both sides of Lewis Street. Mitchell, the third highest ranking Mason in Florida, was honored in 2009 with the naming of the Sollie Mitchell Lodge #377. arsha Dean Phelts is passionate about American Beach. Growing up in Jacksonville, Phelts still remembers the excitement when, as a young girl, the family headed to American Beach for summer vacation. Phelts is the author of An American Beach for African Americans, a definitive history of American Beach, and The American Beach Cookbook, both published by the University Press of Florida. In celebration of the community’s 75th anniversary, Phelts published a limited edition book, The American Beach Book of Homes. The retired Duval County school librarian has more books planned and is a contributor to The Florida Star. Inspiration for her writing comes from “under her blue bottle tree,” she likes to say.

ike so many American Beach residents, Eve Jones has strong memories of visiting as a child on a yellow school bus for annual Sunday school picnics in the 1940s. Jones recalls the excitement of climbing the 65 foot dunes, later dubbed “Nana” by MaVynee Betsch. Upon graduation from Pine Forest High School, Jones graduated from the Brewster School of Nursing. After a rewarding career in Philadelphia, Jones retired in 2001 and fulfilled one of her life-long dreams of owning a home on American Beach. An avid gardener, Jones is on the board of trustees for the American Beach Property Owners’ Association, chairing the beautification committee. Jones is coordinator of volunteers for the American Beach Museum and the American Beach Community Center. Stephan Leimberg, Dickie Anderson, and Marsha Phelts have partnered to capture a unique time in the evolution of American Beach through the portraits and stories of its residents. An exhibit is planned and a book is in progress. The American Beach Museum at the American Beach Community Center on Julia Street is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., as well as by appointment. a petanque party With a growing number of international and local competitors, the Petanque American Open returns to Amelia Island for fun, food, and boules.
BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
P
étanque is a game of boules, invented in 1907 in the town of La Ciotat near Marseilles, France. It was devised by Ernest Pitiot, a local café owner, to accommodate a player named Jules Lenoir, whose rheumatism prevented him from running before he threw the ball, in a sport named “Jeu Provencal.” In the new game, the length of the pitch or field was reduced by roughly half, and a player no longer engaged in a run-up while throwing a ball. Instead, he stood, stationary, in a circle. After that, the game spread quickly and soon became the most popular form of boules in France. Petanque’s popularity is rising throughout the United States, but players are scattered over the 50 states and do not have many opportunities to meet, mingle, and play. That’s why Philippe Boets came up the idea to hold a petanque tournament on Amelia Island. He played the game as a child growing up in France, and became interested in the game again later in life, spending the last eight years with petanque as his full-time occupation. The first Petanque American Open was held in Miami, but Boets decided to move the tournament to Fernandina Beach, which reminded him of the tiny French towns located on the Mediterranean. “Last year, 256 players came from 22 states, plus 11 countries, and everyone had a marvelous time,” says Boets.
“Lots of new friendships were made. High fives and laughter went on from morning till night!” One hundred sixty teams of two players each will be competing this year at 38 petanque courts located at Central Park and the downtown marina. Besides the tournament itself, scheduled for November 15 and 16, there will be clinics, music, food, and beverages for players and spectators. A special guest appearance by legendary chef and petanque player, Jacques Pépin, has also been confirmed. He will be signing his books, The Apprentice and Essential Pépin, during the tournament.
39 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • NOVEMBER 2014
“This tournament is the only large, international one in the world without the usual ‘mens’ and ‘ladies’ brackets,” says Boets. “All one big group, and it’s much more fun!” Players are due to arrive from Mexico, Canada, Belgium, France, Slovakia, St. Barts, and over 25 states to join other competitors in a special welcome reception on Friday evening. The games will begin on Saturday at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the weekend, with awards presented on Sunday evening around 6:30 p.m. in the big tent. Spectators are welcome to watch any or all of the games and finals, and visit with the players during lunch breaks. If space permits, onlookers may even try their hand at this popular sport. Ricard (an anise-flavored liqueur), beer, wine, soft drinks, and a variety of food will be available for purchase at lunch time and afternoons after the games, accompanied by live music from around the world. “The Fernandina Harbor Marina is a beautiful setting, with plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance, and lots of lovely breezes and sunshine,” says Boets. “Not unlike La Ciotat on the French Mediterranean coast, where Petanque was invented. It is the perfect setting for the Petanque American Open.” For more information and a full schedule, visit www.petanque-america-open.net or call (904) 491-1190.

The Chadwick House BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTO BY JAN JOHANNES
T
he two-story Queen Anne is rich with the details that make it a great example of Queen Anne architecture. Its features include a gable-on-hip roof, elaborate detail, bay windows, and a large verandah. The Chadwick House was constructed in 1881 of local heart of yellow pine, the preferred building material of the time. The front door still has its original stained glass. The Chadwick family can be traced to Falmouth, Massachusetts, where they were involved in the whaling industry. Three members of the family moved south in the early 1700’s to South Carolina, and they continued to make their living on the sea there. After the Civil War, members of the family, including Stephan Chadwick, moved to the St. Mary’s, Georgia area. During the Golden Age of Fernandina, the rivers along the coast were the highways of commerce. Extensive shipping records appeared in local newspapers. One can imagine the colorful image of a bustling port, where a wide variety of products were loaded and unloaded. In December of 1879,
the Florida Mirror reported 900 bales of cotton, 419 boxes of pencil wood, 294 cedar logs, 298 barrels of rosin, 634 boxes of oranges, and 38 barrels of syrup were all loaded onto ships and sent to New York. Crates of turkeys, ducks, and chickens were regularly seen on the docks. In addition, baskets of oysters and shrimp were abundant. Captain Chadwick was a successful owner of a fleet of tugboats, and he also operated a livery. The tugboat business thrived, as did the family. Their landholdings included the 3,500-acre White Oak Plantation, which was located in Nassau County and was eventually purchased by the Gilman Paper Company. Chadwick’s son, Louis, followed in the family’s footsteps, and he was a leading citizen and entrepreneur in Fernandina. He married Julia Brady, who inherited Lucy Carnegie’s Brewster “Victoria” carriage. Now owned by one of the carriage operators in the Historic District, the Victoria carriage still traverses the picturesque streets of Fernandina’s Historic District, offering tours and transporting an occasional wedding party.

fiery red tecomas A new plant for next year, the Tecoma Bells of Fire is a bright, rich red flowering shrub that needs little care and will bloom continuously. BY BETTY MORRELL
W
e are having some beautiful fall weather this year. The temperatures are perfect for gardening, and it’s a good time for a fall clean-up in advance of the cold weather. I saw a lot of interesting new plants for next season at the recent Florida Growers Show with Christy, my “In the Garden” business partner. However, before I get to something new, I want to continue last month’s look at gingers with the Butterfly Ginger (Hedychium coronarium). The Butterfly Ginger is a plant that deserves a place in any tropicalthemed garden because its fragrance is so enjoyable. The flowers give off an overpowering, sweet fragrance, much like the gardenia. Pure white, showy flowers emerge from one large bud sometime in late spring through summer at the tip of each unbranched stem. Each flower lasts about one day. Once picked, the flower does not last. The shape of the flowers of this ginger resembles a butterfly with its wings spread open. They are native to the Himalayan region and southern China. The white
TIP O F T HE M O N T H Some leaves are good for mulching, but if you already have mulch in your garden, get rid of the fallen leaves. They cause mold on the mulch underneath the leaves, which can rot your plants.
Butterfly Ginger is the national flower of Cuba. The flowers grow on stems which can grow to five feet. The plant reminds me of a thinner corn stalk, with narrow, olivegreen leaves on a heavy stalk. These plants spread by rhizomes underground and can spread four to six feet. They are fast growers and hardy for our area. Plant it in part-shade to part-sun. I hope you enjoy this wonderful plant as much as I do. One of the interesting new plants for 2015 that I saw at the growers show was the Tecoma Bells of Fire (Red esperanza bignoniaceae). They are a result of the Tecoma breeding project of George Hull at V& P Nurseries in Phoenix. Until recently, Tecomas were available in yellow or orange. The goal for breeding
47 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • NOVEMBER 2014
was to get more color range, as well as a compact plant that produces few if any seeds. The new Tecoma grows up to six feet tall by four feet wide. They perform admirably well in light shade under the canopy of a tree. Seed production is usually minimal, and birds will be happy to relieve you of them. The Tecomas will perform better if periodically fed with an all-purpose fertilizer. They bloom on new wood, thus more branches mean more flower spikes. The Tecoma Bells of Fire are a bright, rich red flowering shrub. They need little care and bloom continuously, only stopping if hit by a hard frost. After a frost, they will start blooming again when it warms up. If a frost hits and the plant is overgrown, a hard pruning to within a foot of the ground will bring new life into the plant. Plant this wonderful new plant in full-sun to partsun. It is moderately salt-tolerant. More new plants are coming in the next few issues. As always, please email me at bamorrell@aol.com with any questions. Happy Gardening, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Doo Wop’s BEST 50’s DINER
It’s the 1950s all over again at Doo Wop Best 50’s Diner, where you’ll find terrific burgers and shakes, homemade meatloaf, and breakfast all day. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
W
hen I walk into the Doo Wop Diner on a weekday morning, The Drifters are singing “Up on the Roof,” Happy Days is playing on the television, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee awakens my senses, and I feel like I’m home. Yes, home again, back in the 1950s, where baby boomers—and French fries—were born. The Doo Wop’s Best 50s Diner is the only place on Amelia Island where you can get true diner treats like burgers, fries, and shakes, delicious homemade meatloaf and roast turkey, all served in ‘50s-style fun. There’s always a lot of energy at the Doo Wop, and it’s usually pretty busy, but I have never had to wait for a table or a seat at the counter because their service is fast. I was greeted by Heather when I came in, who suggested a cup of coffee, and I settled in with Doo Wop’s vast menu. The diner serves breakfast all day long, and since it was still quite early in the day, I was hankering for some eggs. But owner Lisa Deringer suggested I try their Country Fried Steak and Eggs combo, and I was certainly up for that. The Doo Wop’s eggs are always perfectly cooked. I like mine over-light so I can dip my toast in them, and you can get any type of toast you wish, in my case, rye. The steak is coated in a batter and fried (some people call it chicken-fried steak) and it is served with homemade country gravy. The steak was superbly cooked—super crispy on the outside and tender inside, still slightly pink, just as it should
be—and the gravy was out of this world. Sometimes country gravy is over-salted, but Derringer knows what she’s doing in the kitchen, and it was divine. The dish was served with hash browns, the best on the island. Speaking of hash browns, another one of my favorite Doo Wop menu items is “The Chubby Checker,” and I discovered it’s their very best-selling breakfast item. Loaded hash browns with two eggs any style are served with a biscuit and smothered with sausage gravy. I also love their omelettes, and their pancakes are light and fluffy. On this particular morning, I decided to have a side of pancakes with butter and syrup, the perfect way to top off my big Doo Wop breakfast! But don’t forget Doo Wop is known for their real, ‘50s ice cream treats, like Root Beer Floats and Banana Splits. After my breakfast I bought a Chocolate Malt to take to a friend, always a surprising and welcome treat. Doo Wop’s shakes are so thick you almost need a spoon to eat them! Deringer and her talented staff are cooking up some true diner favorites, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They grind their own coffee beans, scoop their own ice cream, and greet their customers with old-fashioned, 1950s-style hospitality. For more information, call (904) 432-8400 or view their menu at www.doowopdiner.biz. They also offer catering for all occasions. The Doo Wop is located at 1120 South 14th Street.

holiday cheer A bottle of spirits, champagne, or sparkling wine makes a great gift for friends, family... or yourself! STORY AND PHOTO BY KAREN MILLER
I
’ve decided to give gifts of wine, spirits, and food to everyone on my holiday list this year. People often say that giving wine or spirits is kind of like giving perfume: if you don’t know the personal tastes of the recipient really well, at least they’ll appreciate the thought. But, according to the experts, you never have to worry whether someone will like the bottle you offer if you are giving the best. When I ask Mitchell Wickless, manager at Five Points Package Store, he suggests purchasing bottle gifts that are a step up from what a friend would normally buy. “If your friend drinks scotch, buy him a bottle of single malt, a well-aged, handcrafted variety,” says Wickless. “For bourbon, choose a true Kentucky variety that meets American spirit requirements. Those will always be welcome gifts and a great addition to one’s home bar collection.” In addition to gifts of spirits, I like to give champagne and other sparkling wines. True champagne comes from the Champagne region of France, always a perfect holiday gift. My friends love Prosecco as well, an Italian sparkling dry or extra dry white wine. For those with a sweet tooth, Asti is also an Italian wine, low in alcohol, and it is lovely served with dessert. Holiday time also means it’s time to stock my own home bar, since you never know who is going to stop by for some Christmas cheer. Wickless suggests scotch, whiskey, bourbon, vodka, and gin, plus a few bottles of red and white wine, and some bubbly. But the key to a good bar is also an excellent selection of mixers. He recommends Bloody Mary mix or tomato juice, cranberry juice, club soda, tonic water, Coke, and lots of ice. And since garnishes are what make cocktails special, I’ll make sure I have plenty of olives, cocktail onions, lemons, limes, celery, and the like. Steven Helmes, a sales representative from Southern Wine and Spirits, suggests new flavors of vodka to give as gifts or to serve at holiday parties. “The liquor companies try to keep it fresh and new. The fun flavors are great. Lots of women won’t drink regular whiskey or plain vodka, but they’ll try a specialty drink,
especially at a holiday gathering.” Helmes recommends Evan Williams Bourbon Egg Nog, and varieties of pumpkin cream liqueur, which can be served over ice, or even in coffee. “Pinnacle Vodka’s unique varieties, like Peach Berry Cobbler, Pumpkin Pie, or Caramel Apple, are excellent choices. Bailey’s Irish Cream or Vanilla Cinnamon is a great addition to a dessert course, and so is brandy and sherry. And women really love dessert martinis!” “Brand recognition is a good way to shop,” adds Wickless. “Look for the better brands of spirits, and see what new flavors they have.” Five Points offers spirit tastings throughout the holiday season, and customers are encouraged to call and check out their tasting schedule. Because I want my guests to drink responsibly, I usually plan on two to three drinks per person, and serve plenty of non-alcoholic beverages for those who don’t drink, or who are the designated drivers. For more information about how to set up the perfect holiday home bar or check out their tasting schedule, call Five Points Package Store at (904) 261-3640.
