on Amelia Island.
Each November, as the holiday season appears on the horizon, we take great pleasure in presenting our annual holiday gift guide. Our goal has always been to highlight some of the wonderful gift items available in our local shops during the holiday shopping season. Whether you’re sneaking something for yourself or searching for the perfect gift for someone special, you’ll find it here on Amelia Island. We hope you’ll kick back with a cup of coffee or tea and spend a little time perusing some of these great gift ideas. With this issue, we hope to save you from venturing over the bridge too often on those frantic annual pilgrimages to the big-city shopping mall, with their harried pace and unhealthy food, and help you get more of your shopping done locally. When you stop by our neighborhood shops, you’ll find friendly, personal service and a wide selection of unique gift items, and you’ll be supporting all merchants who are helping make Amelia Island a great place to live and to visit. Happily, you may also run into a friend and enjoy an impromptu coffee or some holiday cheer. Watching our island slowly transform itself into a beautifully decorated, warm-weather winter wonderland for the Christmas season is a great joy to observe, and enjoying the season by shopping here and sharing good cheer is a fun part of the holiday season. Of course, however hectic our holiday schedules become, the most important part of the holiday season is the time that we spend with family and friends. During the Christmas season on Amelia Island, the spirit moves noticeably among us, prompting many in our community to give graciously of their time, talent, and treasure to help those less fortunate. Their generosity inspires us each year, and reminds that the most precious gifts of the season are family, friendship, and community. Once again this year, we are very pleased to offer in the November “Island Home” a preview of the 2015 Amelia Island Museum of History Holiday Home Tour, an important fundraiser for this outstanding community museum. This year, the HHT is headed for the beach to present some beautiful homes on the seashore. We hope that everyone has a chance to enjoy the tour this year. Also in this issue, we have the privilege of presenting the story of Dr. Erik Larsen, a decorated Korean War veteran, in honor of Veterans Day; a profile of Joey, a talented local dog and her owner, Nichole Curry; a “Fernandina Faces” profile of Frank Basile of Crescendo Amelia (who is also Deana’s cousin!); an “Island Entertaining” column featuring some delicious holiday craft cocktails; and much, much more. Best wishes for a very Happy Thanksgiving! See you around the island!

Amelia Island resident Dr. Erik Larsen left his wife and child in Chicago to serve in the Korean War, where he was a decorated surgeon in a M.A.S.H. unit at the front line.
With his popular big band Crescendo Amelia, Frank Basile is making music, teaching, and helping out in the community, all while awaiting a new baby.
With an amazing array of tricks and her own Facebook page, Joey is a talented border collie trained by Fernandina Beach High School student Nichole Curry.
Craft cocktails are hot, so with Thanksgiving and Christmas approaching, we have assembled a collection of great cocktail recipes for your holiday parties.

FERNANDINA BEACH DESIGNATED FLORIDA MAIN STREET
WILLIAM RASER
Fernandina Beach has received designation as an official Florida Main Street. Main Street is a technical assistance program from the Florida Bureau of Historic Preservation to revitalize and enhance the traditional historic commercial corridors. The program helps reenergize and stabilize the economy by enhancing the appearance and image of the downtown. The program promotes sensible, sustained economic growth and enhancements based on local assets. Being a Florida Main Street will enable Fernandina Beach to maintain a focus on downtown to create greater economic stability, revitalization, sustainability, vitality, and civic pride. Economic revitalization provides jobs and business ownership opportunities for local residents, particularly youth who may otherwise leave the community. The preservation of the distinctive downtown architecture is what makes Fernandina Beach unique, defining the community as “everyone’s neighborhood,” open and inclusive, enhancing residents’ quality of life. The Fernandina Beach Main Street project is a partnership between the City of Fernandina Beach, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Amelia Island CVB, and it is made possible by the generous support of local businesses and individuals. For more information, visit bit.ly/1NBklDP.
LOCAL COMPANIES ARE FINALISTS IN JAGUARS SMALL BUSINESS CHALLENGE The Jacksonville Jaguars and web. com recently launched the “Small Business Breakthrough Competition,” in which local businesses competed for a sponsorship with the Jaguars and a digital makeover from web.com. The grand prize, which was awarded to Modasten, had a value of over $250,000. Out of nearly 500 entrants, nine finalists were chosen to represent their business in front of a panel of judges to vie for the grand prize. Two of the nine finalist contestants were Nassau County’s very own: John Seifert from Townies Deli and Pizza, and Mike Zaffaroni from Fernandina Mulch & Stone. Contestants in the “Small Business Breakthrough” were asked to complete a questionnaire about their business and submit an optional video detailing what they would do if they won the grand prize. The nine finalists advanced to represent their business in a “Shark Tank”-style presentation in front of judges, who included Jaguars owner Shad Khan, Jaguars President Mark Lamping, and web.com’s CEO David Brown. The winner was announced during the Jaguars’ preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
STEVE BERRY NAMED HONORARY CHAIR OF AMELIA ISLAND BOOK FESTIVAL With a fresh format and new venues, there are exciting changes in store for attendees of the upcoming 15th annual Amelia Island Book Festival, the biggest of which is naming Steve Berry as honorary festival chairman. With more than fifteen international best sellers, Berry’s books have been translated into 40 languages with 19 million copies sold in 51 countries. Berry is no stranger to Nassau County and Amelia Island. In 2006, he was awarded the Stellar Award for his outstanding contributions to literacy by the Amelia Island Book Festival. “I’ve been coming to Amelia Island and its many book festivals for a long time,” says Berry. “This year, I’m honored to serve in an advisory role and work with the board to make this the best event in the history of the festival.” Berry will appear in several events throughout the three-day festival, which will be held February 18-20, 2016, along with several other New York Times best-selling headliners. “Steve Berry’s guidance in crafting our offerings and helping to entice other well-known authors to appear at our festival has been invaluable,” says 2015/2016 Festival Chairperson Raffaela Marie Fenn. All proceeds go to support the “Authors in Schools” program. For more information about the festival and events, visit www.ameliaislandbookfestival.org.

ill Wilkinson has over 15 years of experience in the framing business, having started when she finished college. She owned another frame shop on Amelia Island, J&S Frame Gallery, named for her and her daughter, before opening her signature JW Frame Gallery on South 14th Street. The gallery opened this year in March to rave reviews from clients and friends. “I wanted this gallery to be a little different,” says Jill. “Besides our custom framing, I wanted to include local artists and craftspeople, featuring various types of art and mediums.” Jill frames just about anything you can imagine, or not imagine. “For us, it’s not all about just art or photography,” she says. “I make custom mirrors, shadow boxes, frames for trophy ribbons, anything that makes a memory.” Her main vendor is LarsonJuhl, a company that has been making beautiful custom framing materials for well over 100 years. “Larson-Juhl is devoted to bringing fresh choices in timeless classics, as well as offering new, innovative styles,” she says. “They are also the first custom framing manufacturer to offer environmentally
friendly FSC and PEFC certified products.” Jill also owns a large-scale 24-inch Epson printer, which will print on quality photo paper, canvas, and other fine art papers. She even has the means to stretch canvases, and JW Frame Gallery offers top-of-the-line museum glass. Jill is also a fabric artist who creates pillows and unique bags, including her own collection called “Jillows Arts.” She displays her work at the gallery, along with the work of other local artists like Kassie McCormick, Steve Leimberg, Mark Gearis, Susan Henderson, Barbara Peeples, and Karen Trowbridge. “We have a lot of different styles of art with many price points,” says Jill. “With the holidays upon us, you will find many unique items for gift-giving. This is also a great opportunity to have a cherished heirloom framed for that special someone in your life.” JW Frame Gallery is located at 1875 South 14th Street, Fernandina Beach. They are open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call (904) 310-6610 or visit their Facebook page.

haron Ogburn met Kelly Starratt two years ago while Kelly was operating her mobile spray tan business. They became fast friends, and a bond was formed. Sharon had worked as a nurse for thirty years and was impressed with Kelly’s concern for skin health. Both women had family members with skin cancer, so spray tanning made sense for those living in or visiting a beach community. “Our salon grew from our discussions about how we could service clients from head-to-toe,” says Sharon. “That’s how Body Perfect was born!” Body Perfect offers spray tanning and spray art, complete hair services including cut and style, color, and hair extensions, and make-up services. “We use Norvell tanning products,” explains Kelly. “They are organic and good for your skin. We even sell self-tanning products and instruct our clients how to apply them properly.” But spray tans are not just about a sun-kissed glow without going to the beach. “Spray tanning is like makeup for your body,” says Kelly. “It covers acne, stretch marks, and other imperfections, and it’s clean and healthy for your skin.” Body Perfect will be building upon their current service offerings including facials and gel manicures. “Our stylists are very professional,” states Kelly. “They take the time to listen to what our clients want. We are proud to welcome style and colorist Delta Massey to the Body Perfect team!” Body Perfect is located at 2245 Sadler Road. For more information or to make an appointment, call (904) 458-8228.
doula is a professional trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical, and educational support to a mother who is expecting, is experiencing labor, or has recently given birth. Doula is a Greek word meaning ‘women’s servant,’ and doulas have been part of the childbirth process for centuries. After the birth of her two children, Rebecca McKinney decided to become a certified doula. “The doula’s purpose is to help women have a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience. I felt there was a real need for a doula to service women in Fernandina Beach.” Rebecca launched her new business, A Hand to Hold Doula Services, with lots of support from her husband, Matt, who felt being a doula was the perfect fit for Rebecca. “Women are very vulnerable when they are pregnant. There are so many questions and concerns,” says Rebecca. “If you are looking for a guide who can give you personalized one-on-one care beyond the medical issues, and do it on your schedule and as you need it throughout your pregnancy and beyond, then a doula is the solution.” “Whether you’re a first time mom who’s a bit overwhelmed and maybe a little scared, or a second-time mom who may have had complications the first time, I will help you find your way through the uncertainty of pregnancy,” states Rebecca. She also teaches classes on breathing and relaxation techniques, as well as general birthing classes. For more information, call (904) 624-4802 or visit www.ahandtoholddoula.com.

estled in a white Red Cross envelope in a drawer in Dr. Erik Larsen’s home is a 65-year- old-watch, whose hands are frozen forever in time. The watch reads 2:55 p.m. – the exact moment when Larsen’s jeep hit a mine during the May Massacre in Chaun-ni, South Korea. It was May 18, 1951. Larsen was 29 years old, having been drafted as a Medical Officer. Dr. Larsen was married, had a child, and was in general practice on the north side of Chicago when he entered the military. He was given combat and medical training at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, and then was sent to Korea. “I ultimately ended up in the front lines as a Battalion Surgeon, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Regimental Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division,” says Larsen. “In May 1951, I was assigned to Task Force Zebra, which was comprised of part of the 23rd Regimental Combat Team plus additional special units. We moved to the eastern sector of the 38th parallel to a town called Chaun-ni in early May.” “On May 17, the big push started in our sector. All day and all night, we worked taking care of the wounded. This included completion of amputations, and resuscitation procedures,”

a Veteran’s story
remembers Larsen. “We were ordered to stay and fight until relief could finally get to us.” But eventually his task force was completely surrounded by thousands of Chinese soldiers, and he was ordered to withdraw with a convoy of jeeps, trucks, and tanks. “Chinese infantrymen were alongside the road on the right side embankment firing at us with burp guns, machine guns, and rifles,” says Larsen. “The lead tank hit a mine about a quarter-mile down the road and was pushed aside by the other tanks so as not to block the road. We continued on. About a half-mile down the road, the lead tank and our jeep hit mines. In the confusion, dust, smoke and noise, I stumbled out of what remained of the jeep and hid in a crater on the right-hand side under a hill swarming with Chinese.” What Larsen witnessed during the May Massacre is beyond comprehension. He saw his entire medical team killed or captured. He drifted in and out of consciousness, and when he came to in the trench, he knew he would have to flee. Larsen, along with two other soldiers who had been hiding in the trench, agreed to separate. They ran across the road, under continued on page 47.

Frank Basile BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTO BY SHERRY GARBARINI
F
rank Basile came to Amelia Island in 2005 and he has been making music ever since. Founder of the popular Amelia Island band “Crescendo Amelia,” Basile continues to make a mark sharing his talent, teaching young musicians and contributing to the community. With its Big Band sound, Crescendo Amelia offers music for a variety of audiences in a variety of different venues. Originally from Boston, Basile is a graduate of the renowned Berklee College of Music. He is a music production engineer and accomplished drummer. Growing up, he would play along with recordings of his favorite “big band” musicians in his basement at home. His favorites? Glenn Miller, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Big Phat Band, as well as The Who, Rush, Sting, Indigo Girls, James Taylor, Jason Mraz, and many more. After moving to Amelia, he found an abundance of local talent with similar musical interests, pulled them together, and Crescendo Amelia was launched in January 2013. Why Crescendo Amelia? Frank is quick to answer. “Because as performers, we want our entertainment to build excitement as the night goes on.” The first respondent to a Craig’s list posting for musicians was Dennis Negrin, a trumpet player since middle school with classical and jazz training. The group continued to grow through word-of-mouth and now includes a core group of 18 musicians: 13 in the horn section, five in the rhythm section, and other big band components depending on needs. Band members range in age from 18 to 70. They are either seasoned professionals or passionate, talented amateurs. The instrumental core of the band is fixed, along with principal vocalist Marah Lovequist. Other vocalists join the group on occasion for individual shows to ensure variety and freshness. The band adapts to a wide variety of performing opportunities, which include weddings, concerts, dances, fundraisers, or private parties. Performances might be an intimate small jazz trio or a full group of twenty musicians with
vocalist. Frank smiles recalling a special performance. Learning that a fan, an octogenarian, an early and enthusiastic fan of the band, was housebound after hip surgery, the band decided to take their music to her in a house call. Grateful for their success, the band is quick to donate their time and talent to community groups, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of Nassau County and organizations benefiting animal rescue. Future performances include Crescendo Amelia’s second annual Christmas Concert at the Amelia Community Theatre on December 21 and 22, and a New Year’s Eve Big Band Dance at the Atlantic Ballroom (Atlantic Recreation Center). The father of a young daughter, Basile is dedicated to young musicians. The band has donated time and raised money to offer performing opportunities and workshops for young musicians. Most recently, the band participated in “One Spark” in the education division to support music in public schools. Basile teaches drum classes at Yulee Middle School, as well as offering private lessons. Basile met his wife, Shannon, while performing at Indigo Alley, a Centre Street bistro since closed. When they had their first child, they named her Allie to commemorate their meeting. The couple is expecting their second child early next year. It is clear Frank Basile loves what he does. Crescendo Amelia has arrived, and no one is more delighted. “We want to share our music and get people excited about live music.

Nichole & Joey With an amazing array of tricks and her own Facebook page, Joey is a talented border collie trained by Fernandina Beach High School student Nichole Curry. BY WILMA ALLEN • PHOTO BY STEVE LEIMBERG, UNSEENIMAGES.COM
F
rom the moment she hops up on the table at the downtown farmers market and begins ‘pawtographing’ her photo to raise funds for the Fernandina Beach Library, it’s clear that Joey the Border Collie is a star. She knows just what to do. “Focus,” says her ‘mom lady’ Nichole Curry, when an umbrella suddenly pops up from the crowd, or an exuberant child charges up with ice cream. Joey stays calm. She swishes her tail as Nichole gently guides a paw to the inkpad, then carefully stamps the photo. Joey, short for Josephine, was just a tiny pup when Nichole received her as a fourteenth birthday present. Now, just three years later, Joey competes in agility trials, wins championships in flyball (“like drag racing for dogs,” Nichole explains), and has thousands of fans on Facebook. She wasn’t always this way. As a pup, Joey chewed up furniture, shoes, books, even the proverbial homework assignment. “Border collies are not for everyone,” Nichole warns. “They are very high energy and they can cause problems. They will destroy things.” Seeking to rein in her rambunctious pup, Nichole studied the book 101 Dog Tricks: Step by Step Activities to Engage, Challenge, and Bond with Your Dog by dog trainer Kyra Sundance. She began a rigorous training schedule. Nichole and Joey learned together, and now the canine’s an even more beloved member of the busy family that includes two horses, chickens, and a goose. At present, Joey has mastered about two hundred tricks. She can ride a horse, go tubing on the Intracoastal Waterway,
and, with just a few more tricks under her collar, she’ll be a certified “trick dog champion.” Joey’s now learning to herd sheep and perform the difficult handstand (paw-stand), which takes core strength and concentration. They practice at Littleberry Farm, just over the Shave Bridge from Amelia Island, where the Curry’s board their horses and Nichole has a part-time job. A junior at Fernandina Beach High School, Nichole trains Joey in several short sessions every day except on school days, when she balances homework, stabling and feeding fifteen horses at the farm, training a two-year-old gelding, and working part-time at the Fernandina Beach Animal Clinic. Even with this hectic schedule, Nichole is an honor student with hopes of becoming a veterinarian. She started helping Friends of the Library (FOL) last year when they were planning the fundraiser ‘Pony Up and Party at Littleberry Farm.’ “Joey was learning horseback riding at the time and FOL used her picture on their promotional posters,” said farm owner Terry Broussard. Joey also ‘painted’ a picture that sold in the silent auction, and she and Nichole performed in the party’s horse show. Local photographer Steve Leimberg was so charmed by the pair that he offered to come back and take their pictures in the bucolic setting. Prints of one photo, where Joey peruses a book on horses, were a hit for FOL at the farmers market. With Nichole’s gentle coaching and Joey’s patience and ‘pawtographs,’ they raised close to $100 for the library. You can learn more about this talented, fun-loving duo through Joey’s Facebook page: “Joey the Border Collie.”

machine gun fire, and rolled down an embankment to the nearby river. “The shooting continued, so I ran, waded, crawled, and swam across the river, which was at its spring high,” says Larsen. “Bullets were hitting the water all around me. My adrenalin must have kicked in. All I know is that I kept going... I fell ... I crawled ... I got up ... I crawled ... I fell ... I rolled ... I got up. Luckily, I was not hit, except on my helmet. I staggered across rice paddies filled with spring rains and eventually collapsed on the far side of the valley.” Larsen was later picked up by a Sherman tank that took him back to his American troops, where he recovered and returned to his unit. “But everyone in my unit had been replaced,” says Larsen, shaking his head. “They were all killed or captured.” Several weeks after returning to his unit, Larsen was fortunate to be reassigned to a M.A.S. H. (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) unit, where he served as a surgeon at the front lines. Larsen was awarded a Combat Medical Badge and a Purple Heart for his service. In 2000, he returned to South Korea to pay homage to those of his unit who were lost during that dark day in May, 50 years earlier. “It was a long and hard trip, going back there,” says Larsen. “But it was more rewarding than I can possibly describe. I got to see what we were fighting for, and today feel very proud to have served in Korea, in ‘The Forgotten War.’”
This revised & expanded second edition features 25 homes in Fernandina Beach’s Historic District, highlighting when each home was built, by whom, the original owners, and their part in Fernandina’s earlier history, as well as architectural highlights.

autumn attractions As the cooler weather arrives, it’s time to get ready for spring with plants like Walking Iris, Autumn Embers, and Sweet Tea Gardenia. BY BETTY MORRELL
T
he beginning of the holiday season is upon us, with the hustle and bustle of shopping, cooking, and traveling – what a wonderful time of year! So what is blooming in your garden? I have just returned from the 2015 Florida Growers Trade Show, where I discovered lots of new plants and some old favorites for our gardens next year. A wonderful plant for our gardens is the Giant Apostle Walking Iris – Regina (Neomarica caerulea – Regina). This plant has extra large, richly colored, fragrant flowers. A native of Brazil, this easy-to-grow Iris spreads from underground stems. Plantlets form at the end of the flower stems after blooming, and as the plantlets grow in size and weight, the stems bend down to the ground and they root. The Walking Iris is clumpforming, and its leaves are broad and sword-shaped. Its brilliant purple and blue flowers, marked with white and burgundy or brown spots, are borne in clusters above the foliage. It blooms from summer to spring, but Regina may bloom for longer periods of time. Each

flower opens for only one day. The fruits that follow are brown capsules. This is an easy-grow perennial, but tender in a deep frost. It is moderately salt-tolerant and will grow in partial sun and moist, well-drained soil. It will also grow in sand. Container planting or clustering in the garden works, too, and it can also be a house plant with bright light. The plant’s showy, vibrant-colored, and fragrant flowers have leaves that stay green throughout the year. They are fast-growing and, if not frozen in the winter, will spread and can be used as a ground cover. One of the new plants I discovered at the show is Autumn Embers, a Rex Begonia. With its awesome color, it just

pops in the shade garden. Unfortunately, it is not frost-tolerant, so put it in a pot and place in the garden, and then retrieve in cold weather. It is worth the extra work and care. Autumn Embers is a beautiful, medium-sized plant with slightly puckered foliage that glows in bright warm cinnamon and orange tones with red undersides. You all know that my very, very favorite plant is the Gardenia. There are a few new varieties, and they are beauties! Sweet Tea Gardenia has the wonderful fragrance we all love, with tennis ball-sized flowers. I can’t wait to get my hands on one! It is winter-hardy, tested to 4 degrees F. in a container. I have the perfect spot for one in partial shade, and it only grows 3 to 5 feet tall and wide. It has a more upright growth than other Gardenias. I hope you are as excited about these new plants as I am! If you have any questions, be sure to email me at bamorrell@aol.com. Until the next issue, Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Gardening!

E
ach year, the Amelia Island Museum of History offers the island and visitors from far and wide the opportunity to tour some of Amelia Island’s most beautiful and interesting homes. This year’s tour offers an alternative to the traditional downtown historic home tours. This year’s homes are located close to the ocean, and all will be decorated for the holidays by island decorators and designers. Six properties located on the seaside will be open Friday, December 4 and Saturday,
December 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “We had record attendance during last year’s Holiday Home Tour, with over eighteen hundred visitors,” says Carla Foreman, chairman of the 2015 Holiday Home Tour. “Early this year, we thought a great deal about how we could top that and we came up with idea of featuring homes on our beautiful beach. The annual tour is the primary fundraiser for our island museum, so we want it to be the best!”

Lulu’s
AT THE THOMPSON HOUSE From artisan cheeses to superb wines to new twists on old favorites, Lulu’s offers outstanding cuisine and something special at every course. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
A
little over five years ago, Brian and Melanie Grimley came to Fernandina Beach, bringing with them their love for food inspired by their Cajun and Creole roots. Lulu’s at The Thompson House has become an Amelia Island favorite, serving only the choicest meats and seafood, freshest vegetables, and homemade desserts. I met my friend Sherry at Lulu’s for dinner recently, where Chef Brian created a magical and memorable feast for the two of us. Our server Beau started us out with a glass of 2013 Patient Cottat “Le Grand Caillou” Sauvignon Blanc, a delightful clean, bright, and refreshing white much like a Sancerre, produced in the Loire Valley. Then Chef Brian brought out a cheese plate, a selection of artisan cheeses served with pickles, chutneys, and toasted ciabbata. This is a remarkable dish and perfect for sharing with a friend. The cheese consisted of Flat Creek Chipotle Cheddar from Swainsboro, Georgia, a rosemaryrubbed Asiago, an Irish stout cheddar, and Derby sage cheddar. All the cheeses were top-notch, each with their own special quality. The condiments brought this cheese platter to new heights, however, each one created by Chef Brian. There was Creole mustard (his secret recipe), green tomato chutney, fruit chutney, and a lovely tomato jam that was sweet and acidic. A pickled cipollini, which is a tiny sweet onion, and a handful of Marcona almonds rounded out the dish. Sherry and I didn’t want our first course to end! But it’s easy to move on to an entrée like “Twisted in the South,” Lulu’s newest twist on the traditional Southern shrimp and grits. Sherry and I were eager to try this dish, a lighter version of the creamy and calorie-laden original. Chef Brian exchanged the grits for polenta cakes, which were fantastic, and for the shrimp, he created a sauce made with local shrimp, roasted tomatoes, Bermuda onion petals, Andouille sausage, extra virgin olive oil, and arugula. What an amazing dish! It was savory and rich, but light at the same time. Sherry and I would have fought over this dish, but luckily we had another delicious entrée: Seared Salmon Encrusted with Dijon Mustard, Sage, Parsley, and Rosemary.
I love the way Chef Brian treats the salmon. He sears it and then poaches it, so it’s incredibly tender and moist, but still maintains that herby crust. The salmon was served with roasted fingerling potatoes and artisan greens dressed with warm champagne tarragon vinaigrette. Spectacular! We also enjoyed a glass of Willamette whole cluster Pinot Noir from Oregon, created with 90 percent whole cluster Pinot grapes. The wine was ruby red, soft, and perfect with both entrees. Sherry and I always have room for dessert, and Chef Brian treated us to his Peach Cobbler, which was sweet, syrupy, and buttery, served warm with vanilla ice cream. And a surprise treat from Brian, a glass of Peter Lehman Botrytis Semillon from Australia, an excellent chilled dessert wine. Perfect! Lulu’s at The Thompson House is open on Sundays for brunch, and Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner. They are located at 11 South 7th Street. holiday craft cocktails BY KAREN MILLER
T
he holidays are upon us once again, and it’s time to stock up my bar with wine and spirits for holiday entertaining. I normally keep a decent inventory of scotch, whiskey, bourbon, vodka, and gin, plus a few bottles of red and white wine, and some champagne on hand for basic drink requests. This year, however, I’ve decided to offer some signature cocktails – festive and fun additions to my holiday parties. I begin my quest at Five Points Package Store with manager Mitchell Wickless, who always has great ideas for new drinks and cocktail party planning. Wickless, along with his wine and spirit vendors Steven Helmes and Clyde Gantt, are eager to share some new signature cocktail recipes for this year’s holiday entertaining. “The liquor companies try to keep it fresh and new” says Helmes. “The unique flavors are great. Some women won’t drink regular whiskey or plain vodka, but they are happy to try a specialty drink, especially at a party.” A bottle of spirits or wine also makes a
great gift for anyone on your list. “Brand recognition is a good way to shop,” says Gantt. “For instance, Jim Beam comes up with new flavors every year. Combine these flavors with other ingredients, and you’ve got some distinctive and exceptional new drink opportunities.” Wickless points out that there are certain “must-haves” for your holiday bar, ones that never go out of style. “Baileys, Kahlua, flavored vodkas, and of course, eggnog, will always be a hit at your party,” he says. “And don’t forget that garnishes are what make cocktails special. Be sure to have plenty of olives, cocktail onions, lemons, limes, cherries, celery, and the like. And many drinks call for glasses rimmed with various salts and sugars, so put those items on your shopping list, too.” Five Points Package Store offers spirit tastings during the holidays, so be sure to check with the store for their next event. For more information, visit Five Points at 2112 South 8th Street or call them at (904) 261-3640.
