on Amelia Island.

Each November, as the holiday season approaches, we take great pleasure in presenting our annual holiday gift guide. Our goal has always been to highlight some of the wonderful gift items available in our local shops during the holiday shopping season. Whether you’re sneaking something for yourself or searching for the perfect gift for someone special, you’ll find it here on Amelia Island. We hope you’ll kick back with a cup of coffee or tea and spend a little time perusing some of these great gift ideas. With this issue, we hope to save you from travelling over the bridge too often on those frantic annual pilgrimages to the mall, with its harried pace and, and help you get more of your shopping done locally. When you visit our neighborhood shops, you’ll find friendly, personal service and a wide selection of unique gift items, and you’ll be supporting the many merchants who are making Amelia Island a great place to live and to visit. And while you’re out, you may run into an old friend and enjoy a cup of coffee or some holiday cheer. Watching our island gradually transform itself into a beautiful, warm-weather winter wonderland for Christmas is always a treat, and enjoying the season by shopping here and sharing good cheer is a great part of the holiday season. Of course, however hectic our holiday schedules become, the most important part of the holiday season is the time that we spend with family and friends. During the Christmas season on Amelia Island, the spirit moves among us, prompting many in our community to give graciously of their time, talent, and treasure to help those in need. Their generosity inspires us each year, and reminds that the most precious gifts of the season are faith, family, and friendship. Once again this year, we are very pleased to present a preview of the 2017 Amelia Island Museum of History Holiday Home Tour, an important fundraiser for our outstanding community museum, in the November “Island Home.” The tour features five beautiful homes in Fernandina Beach’s historic district, and we hope that everyone has a chance to enjoy the tour this year. Also in this issue, we feature a local organization called Trees for America’s Troops, created to honor a fallen Fernandina Beach soldier, which ships the Christmas spirit to our troops overseas with Christmas trees, presents, and cards; look at the vital community service provided by the women of the Amelia Island Chapter of the Daughters of the America Revolution; present an “Island Entertaining” column featuring some wonderful holiday recipes for cranberries, that Thanksgiving stalwart; and much, much more. Best wishes for a very Happy Thanksgiving! See you around the island!

Each November, we at the Islander like to highlight some of the many great holiday shopping ideas from Amelia Island’s outstanding local shops. We hope this year’s gift guide will help you find just the right presents for all the people on your holiday list.

37 Remembering Our Heros

45 Revolutionary Women

In memory of Fernandina Beach native Kelly Mixon, killed in action in Afghanistan, Trees for America’s Troops provides the Christmas spirit to troops overseas.

Amelia Island’s Daughters of the American Revolution make a difference in the community, providing service, scholarships, and promoting patriotism.

55 Island Home

76 Island Entertaining

The Amelia Island Museum of History’s annual Holiday Home Tour features five beautiful and historic homes in Fernandina Beach’s Historic District this year.

One of only three fruits native to North America, cranberries have long been associated with Thanksgiving, and this “super food” is a great addition to your holiday table.

rt teachers Eva Marie Burns and Serey Andree became friends ten years ago while attending an art class in North Carolina. The two traveled together to various art conferences throughout the country, and eventually they began talking about opening their own gallery and art education center. After moving to Fernandina Beach in 2016 and acquiring the building at 26 S. 5th Street in the historic district, Serey and her husband, Mike, along with Eva Marie, opened Fern and Dina’s Gallery & Gifts in July. “Fern and Dina’s is the fulfillment of a dream of entrepreneurship for both of us,” says Eva Marie. “We have a firm belief that the arts are important for a higher quality of life, and we wanted our studio to be an art education source for a wide variety of classes and workshops for all ages.” In addition to being accomplished artists in their own right, Serey and Eva Marie have experience in retail sales, management, and customer relations. When Eva Marie invited Serey and Mike to visit Amelia Island, their dream

of opening a gallery began to come to life. “Mike had always wanted us to live close to the ocean, and when we visited the area, we knew that Fernandina Beach would be our new home,” says Serey. “We were excited to launch this endeavor, and connect with our new community.” The gift shop features unique, oneof-a-kind treasures from local, regional, and international artists, in addition to investment art ranging from art glass pieces to original paintings to quality prints. The gallery features over 50 artists, as well as classroom space and private artists’ studios. Classes are offered in ceramics, painting, life drawing, book arts, printmaking, and journaling, with lots of special events for artists and art students of all ages and abilities. Fern and Dina’s features handmade items for holiday giving with prices for all budgets, with purchases supporting local artists in their craft. “Handmade gifts are the best!” says Eva Marie. Fern and Dina’s is open everyday except Tuesday. For more information, call (904) 2615566 or visit www.fernanddinas.com.

owland’s Upholstery Plus is the oldest surviving business in Nassau County that has been owned by the same family. Opened over 64 years ago in 1953 by brothers Willard and Earl Rowland, the business was originally in the building where the Crab Trap Restaurant is now located. By 1955, their brother, Lewis, and his wife, Doretha, joined them, and shortly bought them out. The business was then moved to their current location at 1120 South 8th Street. Today, the owners are Arlene Rowland and her brother, Wallace Rowland. Rowland’s custom builds upholstered furniture, but they also reupholster everything from antique pieces to boat and airplane seats. “One unusual item we have seen was a chair made of bull horns brought in by a customer, which we reupholstered in leather with the hair of the cow still attached,” says Arlene. “We really do get some interesting custom requests. We love to take antique pieces and refurbish them, that’s our specialty!” Rowland’s also fabricates custom drapes, valances, cornices, bedding, and shower curtains. They sell fabrics and carpet, and they have a Hunter Douglas showcase for blinds, shades, and shutters. “We have our own on-site workroom,” says Arlene. “We welcome our clients to visit us as we work on their pieces.” “There is value in local expertise and guaranteed satisfaction,” says Arlene. “We love our customers and are so grateful for their business.” Call Rowland’s Upholstery Plus at (904) 261-5842, visit www.rowlandsupholsteryofamelia.com, or stop by their showroom.

ridget Lampson has collecting in her DNA. Her English father, who had been Salvador Dali’s neighbor in Spain before becoming an actor in Los Angeles, along with her equally well-traveled mother, collected antiques from England and the American Southwest. As a child, Bridget spent happy hours finding buried treasures in Mine Hill Preserve in Connecticut. So when Bridget decided to open a retail store on the island, she filled the shop (aptly named Mine Hill Trading) with an eclectic mix of vintage and modern finds. The collection of furnishings, accessories, linens, lighting, and gifts have been carefully curated in a palette of neutrals, all with a sophisticated, yet laid-back style. “For many years, I was an antiques dealer in malls around the area, but I always dreamed of having my own store,” says Bridget. “When the Amelia Island Antiques building became available, I felt it could be the perfect location.” While Bridget’s husband, Ken, renovated the building, she searched far and wide for unique goods. Mine Hill Trading opened in March to rave reviews, immediately attracting dozens of repeat customers. The look is coastal, casual, and chic. Customers often come in with one specific item in mind, but then decide to work with Bridget and her staff on redecorating their entire home. “People love the fresh look we offer,” says Bridget. “And you can find special items for every budget.” Visit Mine Hill Trading Company on Facebook and Instagram. For more information, call them at (904) 310-6823 or drop by 5210 First Coast Highway.

remembering our

heroes

In memory of Fernandina Beach native Kelly Mixon, killed in action in Afghanistan, Trees for America’s Troops provides the Christmas spirit to our troops overseas. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTOS COURTESY KIM KAPPEL

K

elly Mixon graduated from Fernandina Beach High School and studied culinary arts at Florida State College at Jacksonville. He worked as a sous chef on Amelia Island Plantation and was on the Jacksonville Jaguars drum line. He loved drumming, and in his spare time, he could be found in the FBHS band room helping drum students. His goal was to attend Johnson & Wales Culinary Institute and ultimately open his own restaurant. Kelly’s dad and granddad were career military officers. He, too, wanted to serve his country and planned to use his discharge bonus to help make his restaurant dream a reality. Sadly, in December 2010, Kelly was killed in action in Kandahar, Afghanistan when his unit was attacked by a suicide bomber. Others in the unit also died, and the remaining troops were grievously injured. Kelly’s parents were determined to find a way to honor their son’s memory and bring joy to soldiers who have to spend the holidays far from home. The first event was held one year after Kelly’s death, and it is now in its sixth year as Trees for America’s Troops, Inc., a tribute to a young man who gave his life for his country and an opportunity to support those who still serve. Kelly’s parents have since moved out-ofstate, and Trees for America’s Troops is now in the hands of Kelly’s great-aunt, Judi Mixon Brown, president of their board of directors. “Our mission is to provide our military with Christmas trees and essential items that will help them during their deployment,” says Judi. “We are committed to providing servicemen and women with items that will help them overcome the hardship of faraway duty during the holidays.” continued on next page

On November 9, 10, and 11, Maxwell Hall at Memorial United Methodist Church will be transformed into a Christmas workshop, as volunteers of all ages collect and pack trees and Christmas stockings filled with food, snacks, candy, puzzle books, and personal care items, along with hundreds of hand-signed Christmas and holiday cards for American soldiers. “Last year, the Trees for America’s Troops event included 120 24” lighted and decorated Christmas trees, more than 400 filled Christmas stockings, and over 450 cards for our deployed and hospitalized troops overseas,” says Judi. “These items were shared among approximately 800 soldiers. Fifty stockings were also filled with toys for their bomb-sniffing warrior dogs. We invite people to come, bring donations, sign cards, and help decorate, wrap, and package the trees and gifts.” In addition, Trees for America’s Troops needs monetary donations to help with shipping costs and other expenses. A Low Country Boil and Concert for a Cause were just two of their fundraisers this year. The organization accepts tax deductible donations throughout the year, and has received help from local sponsors like Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Wal-Mart. “We’ve grown quite a bit in the last six years,” says Judi. “But there is always more we can do. We want to let our soldiers, especially those serving in war zones, know that they are not forgotten. We have 15,000 troops deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq right now. While we’re going about our everyday lives, these soldiers are protecting our country and risking their lives for our freedom.” Event hours are November 9 from noon to 4 p.m., November 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and November 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information on donations and volunteer opportunities, visit www.treesforamericastroops.org, contact info@treesforamericastroops. org, or call (904) 206-3938. If you are unable to bring items during the event, call (904) 330-4679 for a pick up.

T

he Amelia Island Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) was organized on September 15, 1993 by Jean Dixon Mann, the first Regent, and their charter was issued on February 28, 1995. The local chapter has grown to nearly 200 members, and current Regent Lynn Leisy attributes their successful membership to the strong, talented women who live in Fernandina Beach. “The DAR helps us figure out who we are,” she says. “By proving lineal, blood line descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence, we have a direct connection with the history that made American what it is today.” Mann would then go on to become the Florida State Regent, as well as a Vice President General on the national level. Locally, Lynn Leisy began her tenure as the chapter’s 13th Regent this September. “While the DAR is a lineage organization which requires proof of direct descent from a Revolutionary War patriot, it is also dedicated to preserving and promoting the traditional values of God, home, and country,” says Leisy. “The Amelia Island Chapter is part of this non-partisan group, which has grown into the largest women’s service organization in the world. Its 175,000 members are organized into 1,000 chapters throughout the world.”

The Amelia Island Chapter is one of 300 in Florida, and they logged over 5,000 hours of community service last year. It also bestowed $5,000 in awards and scholarships. Good Citizens Awards were presented to Nassau County middle and high school students, as were awards to winning participants in the American History Essay Contest. One member of the graduating class from each high school received a $1,000 scholarship. “Other aspects of life in Nassau County are also addressed,” says Cara Curtin, Chairman of the Service for Veterans Committee. “Members of the Literacy Promotion Committee were busy after Hurricane Matthew last year, as DAR members helped clean up neighborhoods to observe their annual Day of Service. Members of the Flag Committee offer to replace a worn or damaged flag when they spot one in the county.” Working with the Amelia Island Museum of History and the Amelia Island Genealogical Society, the Historic Preservation Committee helps to preserve the history of the county and to remember its citizens. The Service for Veterans Committee works with the Veterans Council of Nassau County, as well as individual veterans’ organizations, to provide help and support to Nassau County’s veterans and their families. Two former regents, Jane Philips Collins and Gloria Casper Toomey, have worked for years to first rescue and continued on next page

then maintain the Vaughan-Scott Cemetery on First Coast Highway. A discreet black iron fence protects it as it sits next to Waterwheel Cigars. John D. Vaughan was one of five Revolutionary War veterans who settled in the county after he had served his country. Descendents of the Vaughan and Scott families still visit this quiet spot from time to time. All five of these veterans were honored in a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park two years ago, which features a large stone with a plaque bearing their names. James Pelot had a

plantation where the Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport now stands. John T. Lowe is buried near Bells River, and Burris Higginbotham is buried on private land just up the road in Evergreen, Florida. John Vaughan’s plantation was near where his cemetery now rests, while Amos Latham, the island’s first lighthouse keeper, is at Bosque Bello. His descendents still visit his grave. The DAR recently placed a historical marker from the chapter at Egans Creek Park to commemorate Egmont Plantation. The park occupies land that was a part of the plantation, which was destroyed during the Revolution. The chapter also hosts its annual Flag Retirement Ceremony on June 14, Flag Day. Word goes out weeks in advance for residents to bring their worn or damaged flags to the closest UPS store. Fire Station #20 graciously hosts the chapter and its ceremony, and, since fire is the correct way to dispose of American flags, provides a burn barrel and then buries the ashes. Both the national organization and the Amelia Island Chapter know that America’s children are the country’s future. The Children of the American Revolution is open to anyone under the age of 18 who can prove lineage to a Revolutionary War Patriot. The Vaughan-Latham Society of the C.A.R. on Amelia Island is very active and provides an excellent introduction to patriotism and community service. For more information on the local chapter, visit www.ameliaislandnsdar.org. For a glimpse into the national organization and its activities, visit www.dar.org.

A

s we get closer to Thanksgiving, I can almost smell the turkey and pumpkin pie. I love this time of the year, but I am also excited about the Florida Growers Show. Hurricane Irma put a snag in the show when it arrived in September, and the show was postponed. Many of the growers are still cleaning up after the storm, and much of their stock was damaged. However, the show has been rescheduled for this month, and I am looking forward to finding some exciting new plants there to share with you for next season. In thinking about gardens from my youth, they don’t seem much different from today’s gardens. However, in those days, there weren’t very many maintenance-free gardens. Keeping a garden was a full-time job, particularly if it was a rose garden. My dad had a beautiful rose garden with four different colors of climbing roses—red, yellow, pink, and white. I loved picking bouquets, including the gorgeous, big roses grown on regular standard bushes. They were beautiful, and the aroma was bewitching. When

TIP OF T HE M O N T H If rain doesn’t fall to water your roses, give them one inch per week during the growing season. Water early in the day, and fertilize your roses regularly.

you smelled these roses, your nose very likely came in contact with a Japanese beetle or some other insect. Taking care of these roses was very time-consuming, but that was yesteryear. Today, the tenacious efforts of breeders have yielded roses with the best attributes of different varieties combined in new forms. Hybrid Teas, lovely as ever, now combine long bloom periods with the vigor to shrug off pests. Shrub Roses bloom for months, rather than weeks, in addition to their ever-appealing hardiness and longevity. A new group of roses is so exceptionally long-blooming and carefree that they are simply called Landscape Roses. In short, these are not your mother’s finicky roses. Choose a variety that works for you, as these roses offer

53 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • NOVEMBER 2017

colors, perfumes, forms, and habits to suit every situation. There is a new double-flowered blush pink climbing rose called New Dawn, with bright yellow stamens. This rose is free flowering and re-blooms into the fall, with a heavenly fragrance. It’s also disease-resistant, especially to black spot, the bane of many roses here. When planting climbing roses, make sure to plant the crown of the root at least one foot from the base of the trellis or fence. Roses grow best when they receive at least six hours of direct sun per day. More sun means more blooms, and prevents leaning, leggy plants. As climbers send out new canes, be sure to tie them to fences, trellises, or posts. BGI puts out a species-specific fertilizer called RoseGain (12-6-13), which is also good for all flowers, annuals, and perennials. I’ve heard wonderful things about this fertilizer, and I will look into it at the show and let you know more soon. If you have any questions, you can email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening, and Happy Thanksgiving!

España RESTAURANT & TAPAS With fresh seafood, delicious paella, and a wide variety of mouth-watering tapas, Espana has made the tastes of Spain and Portugal an Amelia Island favorite. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

T

his month we tip a toque to a cornerstone of the Amelia Island culinary scene, Roberto and Marina Pestana and their restaurant Espana. I love these folks, and if you’ve ever spent a few moments in their company, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Generosity abounds. Over the past 14 years, I have fallen in love with the wonderful people, the picturesque setting, and of course, the food. This year, my wife, Allie, celebrated her birthday hunkered down as Hurricane Irma had her way with most of the southeastern United States, so we took advantage of a rare quiet night a few weeks later to enjoy a belated birthday celebration.

Our server, Jonathan, was inviting and very knowledgeable. He went over the evening’s specials, and we decided to start with an order of Oxtail Empanadas, homemade pastry stuffed with slow-cooked oxtail and goat cheese, deep fried, and served with a curry aioli. I ordered a glass of Evodia Garnacha to enjoy with our empanadas. The perfect mix of wild cherry and spice make this fruit-forward Spanish wine the perfect partner for the rich

and complex flavors of the oxtail. The smooth texture and fruit finish delicately embrace the tangy chevre and flaky crust. Espana is known for their authentic paellas, but reading over the menu I wanted it all, so I opted to go the tapas route in order to experience as much of it as possible. Allie has a soft spot for fresh mozzarella and complete disdain for anything icky, like snails. I, on the other hand, was relieved not to have to share my Caracoles, escargot flambéed with garlic and onion and served in a creamy tomato sauce. The earthy flavor of the escargot and the acid from the tomatoes made the last little bit of my Garnacha worth saving. Everyone has a favorite dish at Espana, and a friend recommended that Allie try the grouper. She settled on the Mero a Lisboeta (Grouper a la Lisbon), fresh grouper filet topped with diced tomato, onion, capers and olives, with a tomato coulis. I ordered the Shrimp Ceviche and a glass of Martin Codaz Albarino, a Spanish white wine with bright fruit and lemon zest notes that complimented the diced shrimp cured in lime juice with onion, peppers and cilantro. I knew that Allie would be getting full soon, and it turns out the Albarino was a perfect pairing for the grouper, too. Both dishes were outstanding. I always save a little room for dessert, but tonight I had cleaned every plate that came to the table. Our server Jonathan tempted us with their creamy, delicious Flan or their homemade Tres Leches Cake, but we were so full we had to pass. The lovely indoor/outdoor atmosphere of the patio dining room made for the perfect place to linger and enjoy a few more minutes of grown-up time before it was back to the house to get everyone ready for bed and school in the morning. We decided that having to miss out on dessert was as much of an excuse as anyone could need to return soon. Espana Restaurant & Tapas is located at 22 N. 4th Street in downtown Fernandina Beach and is open every day from 5-10pm. Reservations are recommended.

Crazy for Cranberries BY KAREN MILLER

C

ranberries are one of the only three fruits that are native to North America. It’s a wild crop that grows on long-running vines in sandy bogs and marshes, mostly in the Northeast. Native Americans were the first to enjoy cranberries, using them to make pemmican, a survival food, along with using the berries as natural dyes. It was only natural that cranberries would find their way onto Thanksgiving tables throughout the U.S. Cranberries are considered a “super food” and well-deserving of a more prominent place on our holiday menu

than its traditional jellied form out of a can. Besides vitamin C, we now know that cranberries are full of antioxidants that help cleanse and purify the body, and can be used in many dishes like chutneys, breads, desserts, and salads. When planning your Thanksgiving dinner, why not consider using cranberries in several forms, especially since they are in season and available at a reasonable price? Make raw cranberry relish, cranberry glaze for your turkey, cranberry bread, and sugared cranberries, and your Thanksgiving dinner will be “super” delicious!

SUGARED CRANBERRIES Ingredients 1 bag cranberries 2 cups white sugar 2 cups water ¾ cup light brown sugar 1 tablespoon maple syrup Preparation In a saucepan over medium heat dissolve white sugar with water. Bring to a simmer and turn off heat. Add cranberries to the sugar water and set in the refrigerator to soak for 8 hours. Strain cranberries. Toss brown sugar with maple syrup in a bowl. Then, working in small batches, add a few cranberries at a time to coat with sugar, spreading them out on a parchment-lined baking sheet for several hours to dry. Sugared cranberries are great for garnishes, ice cream, beverages, cheese platters, or eaten just as they are.
