holiday season.

With the holidays quickly approaching, it’s a pleasure to watch as everything in our lives slowly becomes transformed by the joy of the season, especially on Amelia Island. Of course, one of the most cherished traditions of the holiday season is the exchange of gifts with those we love. Finding just the right gift for someone special in our lives is a wonderful feeling, and it is at the heart of the Christmas season. Each year in November, we take great pleasure in presenting our annual Holiday Gift Guide. Our goal is to highlight some of the fabulous finds available at our local shops during the holiday shopping season. Whether you’re searching for the perfect gift or sneaking something for yourself, we’re certain you’ll find it here on Amelia Island. We are always proud to showcase all the terrific shops that Amelia Island has to offer. We hope that you’ll relax with a cup of coffee and spend a few minutes looking through these great gift ideas. Perhaps we’ll even save you that joy-killing road trip to the big-city shopping mall, or save you a few clicks on your over-taxed index finger. This year, visit your friends and neighbors in Amelia Island’s fine shops, and you’ll find personal service and a wide variety of unique gifts. With a little luck, you might bump into an old friend and share a little holiday cheer. Regardless of how hectic things get, spending time with family and friends is the most important part of the holiday season. The Amelia Island community is a warm and welcoming place, and never more so than around the holidays, when the spirit of giving moves so strongly through so many. It is a time of year to be grateful for the precious gifts of family, friendship, and community. Once again, we are very happy to present as part of our monthly “Island Home” feature a preview of the Amelia Island Museum of History’s 2018 Holiday Home Tour. The Holiday Home Tour is one of the museum’s most important fundraiser, and this year the tour returns to the beach, with five beautiful homes overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, all dressed in their holiday finest. We hope everyone has a chance to enjoy the tour this year. Also in this issue, we preview the upcoming Petanque Amelia Island Open, a great island event, with a look at how Philipe Boets brought petanque to Amelia Island in 2009; present another “Fernandina Faces” profile by Dickie Anderson on Fernandina Beach native Larry Ogilvie; offer an “Island Entertaining” column with great ideas on satisfying a crowd for breakfast during the holidays; and much more. Best wishes to all for a Happy Thanksgiving!

TREES FOR AMERICA’S TROOPS BRINGS HOLIDAY JOY TO TROOPS OVERSEAS

SHERRY CARTER

On November 8, 9, and 10, Trees for America’s Troops will hold its annual donation event at Memorial United Methodist Church, 601 Centre Street, collecting and sending trees and Christmas stockings filled with food, snacks, candy, puzzle books, and more, along with hundreds of hand-signed Christmas and holiday cards to soldiers currently serving in the military. “Our mission is to send joy to U.S. troops serving overseas who can’t be home for the holidays,” says Trees for America’s Troops president Judi Mixon Brown. “We want to let our soldiers, especially those serving in war zones, know that they are not forgotten. Trees for America’s Troops 2017 event included over 120 24” lighted, decorated Christmas trees, over 400 filled Christmas stockings, and 450 cards for deployed and hospitalized troops overseas. “These items were shared among 800 soldiers,” says Brown. “In addition, 50 stockings were filled with toys for their warrior dogs. This year’s event is bound to be our biggest ever.” Individuals and organizations are invited to participate by donating items, packing and wrapping, writing cards, and creating handmade ornaments. In 2017, over 130 adults, teens and children participated. For more information and a list of donation suggestions, visit www.treesforamericastroops.org.

Weekend guests are encouraged to visit www.ameliaisland.com for lodging opportunities. DEREMER STUDIOS

With the popularity of home makeover shows, Joe Cutajar of First Coast Sotheby’s International Realty thought he’d hold his own home makeover as a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Nassau County. It was a unique idea, originally generated by his desire to help Tom and Donna McKeel sell their home on Long Point Drive. “I’ve been involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs for many years,” says Cutajar. “We thought this would be a fun way to help the Clubs, and help the McKeels sell their home.” The updated space was transformed by Julia Hall Interiors. Cutajar sold tickets for $20 each to attend the “big reveal” party on August 9, which included an evening of hors d’oeuvres and wine provided by Lagniappe Restaurant and Amelia Island Wine Company. Between ticket sales and added donations, The Cutajar Group raised $2,500, which was matched by the Delores Barr Weaver Foundation, for a total of $5,000. “100% of the ticket sales went to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Nassau County,” says Cutajar. “It was a lot of fun, and people really got into the makeover as we posted the progress on social media.” To make a donation to BGC, visit www.bgcnassau.org.

orn in Australia, Trish Tipton began her interest in clay in 1976 while she was living in New Zealand. But she wasn’t able to fulfill her dream to be a clay artist until after she retired from California School Food Service in 1997, when she embarked on an intensive course of study in ceramics. After moving to Fernandina Beach with her husband, Lawrence “Tip” Tipton, the couple opened their own gallery, Slightly Off Centre Gallery & Gifts, located at 218c Ash Street. Running a gallery and creating pottery is no easy task. Tip provides support while Trish works in her home studio. “Now that the dream of maintaining an active and thriving pottery studio is real, I strive to create work that is an extension of my love for both cooking and clay,” says Trish. “My tableware is both user-friendly, and attractive.” Trish derives great pleasure out of knowing that her work is part of her clients’ everyday lives, as they cook and eat from each of her handmade pieces. “My ceramic ware is created from stoneware clay and glazed with food safe

materials,” says Trish. “The functional pots and plates are dishwasher safe, and suitable for oven and microwave use.” Some of her most popular pieces include her sushi sets, complete with charming chopstick rests and serving plates. But one of her favorite projects is creating custom tableware for her clients. “A client will come to me requesting certain colors, shapes, and sizes of plates and bowls, and I’ll create ceramic pottery to their liking.” says Trish. “I love the process of working with people, and knowing that my pottery is something they will use and enjoy for years to come.” But Trish’s gallery is much more than pottery. She sells a variety of eclectic art and designs from local artists including sculpture, paintings, photography, textiles, jewelry, and more. Her constantly revolving inventory mean that customers will always find something new. “This time of year is the perfect time to visit Slightly Off Center for unique gift ideas,” says Trish. “And we’re open every day from 11 to 5 pm.” For more information, call (904) 277-1147.

ifetime Enclosures is a force to be reckoned with in the construction world. Thinking outside the box, creating a healthy and balanced work environment, and making their customers happy have brought them much success. For 28 years, Jeff Briar and his experienced team of designers have created enclosures to fit their customers’ needs and budgets. Located in Jacksonville, the company has grown to service customers throughout Northeast Florida and beyond. In June, the Lifetime family expanded, creating Lifetime Flooring. As the foremost builder of quality enclosures, many of which required new flooring, it was a natural fit for Jeff and his team. “Our enclosures are all about having fun - creating a fun space for your family to hang out at the pool and not have to worry about bugs, protected from the weather, but still feel like you’re outdoors,” says Jeff. “But more than enclosures, we also do lanai conversions, outdoor kitchens, plus sunrooms and solariums.” “We offer a free consultation, in which we’ll come to your home and discuss your needs and your vision,” says Jeff. “Then we work with you each step of the way. All of our installation work is done in-house, with our own people, not subcontractors. We’re truly a family business.” Jeff’s motto is “Enjoyment for a Lifetime,” and he takes that motto very seriously, in his work, and in the special time he spends with his own family. “Enjoying life,” he says. “That’s what it’s all about!” For more information, visit www.lifetimeenclosures.com. 34 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

hen Diane LaPatra was a little girl, she used to rearrange the furniture at home while her mother was at work. “My mother used to get so angry with me,” laughs Diane. “But I loved decorating, and interior design has always been a big part of my life.” But it would be many years later, after her retirement from Ford Motor Company, before she bought a home decor store, Amelia’s Treasure, in downtown Fernandina Beach in 2012. The store has moved twice, and has now found its permanent home at 218 Ash Street. The shop is jam-packed with beautiful gifts like lamps, prints, mirrors, candles, jewelry, table settings, Christmas ornaments, and more, but her true love of decorating is one of the “treasures” you’ll find at the store. “I help people decorate for the holidays, using their existing holiday decor, or adding new items for a timeless look,” says Diane. “I love to make custom wreaths, Christmas trees, and garlands. I use them to decorate my own store, but inevitably, I end up selling them all!” Diane is very involved with community activities, including the Amelia Community Theatre, where she decorates sets, and the Main Street Program, where she volunteers. She’s also decorated several of the homes featured in Amelia Island Museum of History’s Annual Holiday Home Tour. Amelia’s Treasure is open 7 days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., so Diane doesn’t get much time off, but that’s okay with her. “I love working, and I love my customers!”

The Day

Pétanque Came to Town

BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTOS BY DEREMER STUDIOS, INC.

hen Philippe Boets moved to Amelia Island in 2009, he brought with him the game of pétanque, and Amelia Island has never been the same. A global sport, similar to bocce, that began in France, pétanque is a game that everyone can play, and that’s what Boets loves about it. “I began playing pétanque when I was a boy growing up in Belgium,” says Boets. “We didn’t have a television. We would play pétanque on the beach with our families and friends.” Boets moved his business, Pétanque America, to Amelia Island as well; it is the only store in America that is dedicated to the game. Boets realized that Amelia Island was the perfect spot to hold an international tournament, and he received support from the City of Fernandina Beach. “Angie Lester, Susan Hurley, and Susan Steger helped us launch the first tournament in 2009, and the rest is history,” says Boets, who eventually handed over the event to the Amelia Island Tourist Development Council. Now in its 10th year, the Pétanque Amelia Island Open draws a diverse and affluent audience: champions, Francophiles, and influential community stakeholders who look forward to the international arrivals and to their positive economic impact 37 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

during a slow weekend with less-than-ideal beach weather. Amelia Island was formerly French (the first of its eight flags,) and the Fernandina Beach harbor and historic downtown are not unlike the villages where pétanque began. “Our approach began with a classic French film from the 1930’s,” says Gil Langley, AICVB President and CEO. “Fanny, as iconic in France as Gone With the Wind is in the U.S., has a signature scene where a tram must yield for a heated pétanque match. Using a cast of volunteers, Amelia Island recreated the scene in downtown Fernandina Beach.” One of the sport’s top ambassadors shared the video on social media with Pernod Ricard, who extended an invitation to show the video and promote the tournament at three Bastille Week events held on the rooftop of the Novotel in Times Square. It also caught the attention of Véronique de Villèle, a well-known sports personality and president of the French Boules Sports Federation (the primary group behind the Olympic inclusion bid), along with chef Jacques Pépin, who originally came to Amelia Island for the tournament and returns to visit every year.

At the tournament last year, the experience spoke to all the senses. Alliance Francaise Jacksonville was on site with pop-up French lessons and a baker specializing in macarons. Vendors sold crepes and baguette sandwiches. The bar, set in a circus tent, featured craft cocktails of locally distilled Marlin and Barrel spirits along with Ricard. Live music from local musicians as well as from Ukrainian guitarist Vitaly Makukin, rang out over the tournament grounds. In a post-tournament interview with WJCT, Langley noted, “It’s a lot to manage, but these numbers confirm it is well worth the time and effort. Without a doubt, events such as these play an integral role in our marketing strategy and are a key factor in our tourism community’s continued growth and success.” This validated the approach of expanding the event›s appeal by bringing in more elements of European culture. The new visual identity incorporated the colors of the French flag. The tournament›s story became part of a travel trade activation in Germany, the top international market for Amelia Island, with a pop-up pétanque court at the European Elvis Festival. At the 2017 tournament, 390 players from 29 countries and 25 states participated. This year’s Pétanque Amelia Island Open will be held November 9-11. arry Ogilvie has lived on Amelia Island his entire life. He cannot imagine living anywhere else. He is a Fernandina Beach High School graduate, and he remembers a time when the island could only be approached by the old draw bridge and you could drive the length of the beach with nothing to stop you. During the Shrimp Festival, shrimp boats would race in the harbor. Now, the Shave Bridge connects Amelia Island to the mainland, beach driving is limited, and the shrimp boats are all but gone. Many of the changes he has seen are good, but for Ogilvie, it is hard not to miss the old days. Ogilvie opened his business, Advance Muscle Therapy, in 2004 in a very small office in the Gateway to Amelia building. As an athlete himself, Ogilvie was convinced that there was a different way to treat repeated sports injuries and injuries in general. The typical treatment was ice, heat, and surgery. He investigated a soft tissue technique that offered another approach. His research and commitment has helped build a business that now operates in a 3,600 square foot facility in the same Gateway to Amelia complex, offering physical therapy, fitness, and a massage studio clinic with eight employees. “I really like being able to help someone understand how they injured themselves,” says Ogilvie, “and how they can maintain their health if they follow a few simple techniques that I have learned in my 40 years of training and teaching. I like what I do!” Advanced Muscle Therapy participates in a nationwide workout program specifically designed for Parkinson’s patients called RockSteady. The class meets three times per week, and each class has as many as 15 participants. It has been shown that participation in RockSteady may slow down the progress of the disease, and patients have been able to reduce their medications. “The camaraderie among the class participants is incredible,” shares Ogilvie. “They love working out with each other and are concerned when someone misses even one class.”

Rotary Club is a big part of Ogilvie’s community involvement. He is a charter member of the Rotary Club of Amelia Sunrise Club and immediate past-president. He has fond memories of his high school involvement in Interact, a program sponsored by Rotary that brings young people ages 12 to 18 together to develop leadership skills. Ogilvie was involved in Interact while a student at Fernandina Beach High School from 1975 to 1977. The Rotary Sunrise Club will host its seventh Wine & Food Tasting on March 2 at the Atlantic Recreation Center. This much-anticipated annual event featuring premium wines, entertainment and food pairings raises money for Amelia Island non-profit organizations. So what does he do for fun? He is a home brewer. It has been a hobby for five years, and he boasts he has yet to make a bad batch. He has mastered the art and science of homebrewing and enjoys entering competitions with his friend, John Kublbock. They have won several awards. Ogilvie’s wife, Stephanie, is a retired banker. Each has two daughters. All four daughters are in the health care business. Ogilvie’s daughter, Kim, works with her father at Advanced Muscle Therapy. He and Stephanie both enjoy playing tennis and belong to the Amelia National Tennis Center.

charming chaste tree Make a big statement in your garden this season with standouts like the Chaste Tree, Chinese Snowball, with its spectacular, Hydrangea-like blooms, or Blue My Mind. BY BETTY MORRELL

I

’ll bet you’re thinking of pies, cookies, and gifts as you get ready for the coming holidays with family and friends, but I’m excited to take you with me on my search for new and outstanding plants, trees, and grass. As I was standing in front of a display of pretty shrubs recently, I looked up to see the most vibrant blue flowers on a small tree. It was a Vitex Agnus Delta Blue (Chaste Tree). This tree features blue flower cones that last a long time during some of the toughest months of the year. From late summer through fall, the flowers are blue-to-lavender as they shift in color. The leaves are light gray-green, so the flowers really stand out. The tree grows 8 to 10 feet tall, and it has an ornamental bark with long, cracking blocks of gray. It grows in full sun to part-shade. This plant is hardier than the Crape Myrtle, and yes, it is deciduous. Both the leaves and flowers are delightfully fragrant, and it’s maintenance-free. You won’t be sorry if you plant Delta Blue as a specimen plant, in a corner, on both sides of your

entryway, or near the patio. No matter where you choose to display this tree, it will brighten up your landscape. An old-time favorite of mine that has graced Southern gardens for generations is the Chinese Snowball (Classic Viburnum). The shrub is laden with hydrangea-like blooms, so you only need one to make a big statement. You can add a splash to a border or train it into a small accent tree. This semi-evergreen blends beautifully into any yard. When this Snowball starts flowering in April, you will be rewarded with spectacular, softball-size blooms that start out limegreen and then open to pristine white. Because the blooms are sterile, this Viburnum does not produce fruit, and

55 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • NOVEMBER 2018

while many Viburnums are fragrant, Chinese Snowball is not. Once flowering is done, this dense, round shrub blends into the background, allowing other plants to steal the show. Give it ample room. One or two in a suburban-size yard are plenty. Blue plants are popping out at me this year. Last year it was yellow! Another pretty plant I would recommend planting is the Silver Dwarf Morning Glory called Blue My Mind. True blue flowers and fuzzy silvery-green foliage adorn this plant. Blue My Mind has a mounding habit of 6 to 12 inches, or trailing up to 24 inches, and it looks great spilling over the edge of a pot. It performs best in full sun and needs to be protected from light frost. Once established this plant is drought tolerant, but until it is established, it needs steady watering for a couple of weeks. It’s a great plant for beginner gardeners and those who prefer low-maintenance gardens. If you have any questions, you can email me at bamorrell@aol.com. Happy Gardening and Happy Thanksgiving!

2018 Holiday Home Tour BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTOS BY ELIZABETH WILKES PHOTOGRAPHY

F

ive beautiful homes will open their doors for the annual Amelia Island Museum of History Holiday Home Tour this year on November 30 and December 1. Each home will be decorated for the holidays by an island designer or florist. Once a year, the Amelia Island Museum of History coordinates its eagerly anticipated two-day event that serves as the unofficial start of the island’s holiday season. Usually the homes are located in Amelia Island’s Historic District, but this year’s tour offers an interesting change—the beach! Now in its twelfth year, this year’s tour is offering five unique and special homes. Docents will be on hand at each house to share interesting information about each home. Close to 2,000 people enjoyed last year’s tour. The museum’s annual fundraiser continues to grow each year.

2610 SOUTH FLETCHER AVENUE Bruce and Janice Streeter Holiday Décor by Island Flower and Garden – Amber Marvin Bruce and Janice Streeter lived down the road from this lot, and upon retirement, they decided to build a house on it. They wanted an energy-efficient, low environmental impact home with reduced maintenance requirements, while at the same time, maximizing the spectacular ocean views. This home is definitely ready for storms. It is constructed of styrofoam blocks filled with concrete that can withstand winds of up to 300 miles per hour. Beyond its technical ingenuity, visitors will enjoy memorabilia from various locations around the world, including a lovely painting of Aberdeen Harbor in Scotland and carved bowl from Australia. .

4015 SOUTH FLETCHER AVENUE Brian and Carrie Barth Holiday Décor by Revelation Design – Brooke Raulerson Owners Brian and Carrie Barth built this home for their young and growing family. From its fourth level, visitors will experience breathtaking views of Amelia Island’s beautiful beach and the Atlantic Ocean. Inside the house, visitors will enjoy the spacious and well-designed kitchen, with its white island and cabinets. The dining area features water-themed fun, family photography, and a magnificent “bubble chandelier” above the long wooden dining table, which won’t be easy to keep from touching! 1231 NORTH FLETCHER AVENUE Tom and Vicki Whittemore Holiday décor by Revelation Design – Brooke Raulerson Newlyweds Tom Whittemore and his wife, Vicki Harnage Whittemore, used architect John Dodd and builder Young America to transform their home into a treasured dream house on the beach. I had the opportunity to see the facility first-hand during the buildout, and I was looking forward to seeing all that they were able to do with the space that Artistic Florist used to call home. However, I was not prepared for how exciting and interactive a bookstore could be. In an effort to attract new customers and hold on to the ones they’ve got, retail stores throughout the country have been dipping their toe into the turbulent waters of food service. In the bistro at Story & Song, Tonya Clark is preparing delicious food made in-house, by hand and with love, for island residents and visitors alike. Fresh baked pastries, coffee and tea, beer and wine, and a fantastic menu that is ever evolving are reason enough to stop in, but the playful nature of the store, its inviting atmosphere, and its connectivity will keep customers’ appetites and imaginations inspired. Later that week, I ordered a few items to pick up and share with the folks in the front office at Fernandina Beach High School, where I teach Culinary Arts. I called in my order that morning to save time and picked up our food just before noon. The menu at Story & Song is concise, with a focus on quality and good health, and it’s loaded with literary references. The selection is perfect for feeding the troops a delicious meal without burdening them with too many heavy calories in the middle of the day. Today, we shared the Ham & Brie Bagel, Tomato-Basil Flatbread, A Walk in the Woods Wheatberry Salad, and a Turkey and Cheddar Bagel. The Ham & Brie was exactly how it sounds, warm and ooey-gooey, dripping with melted cheese on a toasted bagel direct from New York. The flatbread was a hit, crispy and 64 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

delicious, with fresh basil and tomato. I was excited to try the wheatberry salad. A wheat berry is a whole wheat kernel that has been soaked and cooked like a legume. Once cooled, these tiny fruits are tossed with lemon juice, olive oil, and fresh herbs and served over a hearty mixed green salad. Our final selection was a Turkey and Cheddar sandwich on an Everything Bagel, with lettuce, tomato, and red onion. This

sandwich was heavenly. So delicious in fact that I have been back a few times to get one for myself. The bagels are some of the best I have ever had, and while I’m no expert, you don’t have to grow up in the Big Apple to recognize quality when you taste it. Story & Song Neighborhood Bookstore Bistro is located in Amelia Park Town Center at 1430 Park Avenue, just off of South 14th Street. There is plenty of parking for a crowd. You may dine-in, carry out, or have a luncheon catered on-site. The store is open 7 days a week, and the Bistro serves daily from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sundays.

Holiday Breakfast for a Crowd STORY AND PHOTO BY KAREN MILLER

A

s a former caterer, I’ve discovered time-saving tips to make cooking breakfast for a crowd a breeze. Savory and sweet breakfast casseroles can be assembled the night before, then popped into the oven the next morning. To satisfy your sweet tooth, Baked French Toast is an easy and delicious breakfast staple. You can serve it with various types of syrup, fruits, and sauces. It’s so good, in fact, that you may never cook French toast in a frying pan again! To prepare large amounts of bacon or sausage, cook on rimmed baking sheets in the oven until nearly done, then drain on paper towels and store in the refrigerator until needed. Heat quickly in the oven before serving. To make use of that leftover turkey, Sweet Potato Turkey Hash can be made in advance

and reheated in a casserole dish for breakfast or brunch. This recipe can be adapted for any type of meat, potatoes, and vegetables, including leftover prime rib and baked ham. If you’re not fond of sweet potatoes, use red or white potatoes, and add leftover vegetables like carrots, peas, and green beans. Although everyone owns a pod coffee maker these days, it’s not nearly as good as freshly brewed or French press coffee. Consider investing in a coffee urn that holds 12 to 20 cups of coffee. They keep beverages hot for 8 hours, which means your guests can have delicious, piping hot coffee all day. Stop by your favorite bakery for an assortment of muffins, scones, and breakfast breads to round out your holiday breakfast feast, and don’t forget a bowl of fresh fruit!
