”
Amelia Island really knows how to celebrate the Christmas season. We at the Islander have been privileged in Christmases past to share some of the selfless work that Amelia Island residents do during the holiday season through Joy to the Children, Barnabas Center, and the many other charities that channel the island’s seemingly boundless generosity. Christmas is a season for reflection, for sharing with those in need, and for gathering to share life’s blessings with our families. It’s a time of year when we remember all the good things we have experienced—and acknowledge the source of all that is good—and when we focus on what is most essential in our lives. In our world today, with its endless distractions, the Christmas season is a healthy tonic for the soul. As we reflect on our blessings, we feel gratitude, which also makes the Christmas season a time of great joy. And joy is never in short supply on Amelia Island this time of year. When we celebrate the season, we can choose from countless opportunities for making merry. In our cover story, we share as many of them with you as possible, like the Museum of History’s Holiday Home Tour, the Amelia Island B&B Association’s Cookie Tour, the new “Dickens on Centre” event in downtown Fernandina Beach, “Breakfast with Santa” and the S.S. Amelia—the world’s largest gingerbread pirate ship—at The RitzCarlton, Amelia Island, plus musical and dramatic interpretations of the holiday season, including “Miracle on 34th Street” at Amelia Community Theatre, “A Christmas Carol” at Fernandina Little Theatre, a big band Christmas with Crescendo Amelia, and a jazz Christmas show with the Dynamic Les DeMerle Trio with Bonnie Eisele. And that’s only the beginning! Our local churches have Christmas concerts and plays, the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort is bustling with great events, and our local shops have special holiday happenings. Get the most out of the holiday season this year! Cultivate a spirit of gratitude, join the events at your church, spend time with those closest to you, and share in the good cheer. Along with the happy memories we make, may a spirit of humble thankfulness take root in our hearts. Also in this issue, Dickie Anderson remembers a time not long ago when shrimp was king of the local economy; we present a “Fernandina Faces” profile of Mike Bowling, creator of Pound Puppies, the international toy phenomenon; we look ahead to the 2016 Amelia Island Book Festival in February; learn about Springerle Christmas cookies; and much more. And so, from our family to yours, we wish you Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and a very Happy New Year! See you around the island!

here’s no place like home for the holidays, especially when your home is Amelia Island! Our lovely island paradise has all the amenities for joyful holiday celebrations. December weather is perfect for any occasion, whether it’s a picnic on the beach, a fishing excursion with the kids, or Christmas shopping with friends. And do we miss that white stuff from up north? You bet we don’t, because we can always dip our toes in the white sands of Amelia Island’s coastal beaches any time we want. The Christmas season begins Thanksgiving evening. Once the turkey is carved and the dishes washed, we’re ready to start our shopping and merry-making. At Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort, the fun has already begun, with their annual Holiday Tree Lighting at The Shops, held the day
after Thanksgiving. Enjoy the magic and twinkling lights while you shop and dine there this season, and don’t miss the Festival of Trees, which will be featured through January 1. Ten local charities will display trees on the porches of the shops around the lake. Guests of the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort, along with members of the public, can select their favorite tree and/or charity and donate to that cause. In addition to other numerous goings on about the resort during December, the Omni hosts the Gator Bowl Golf Classic on Thursday, December 31, a fine way to welcome the New Year. For more information, call (904) 261-6161. A sailing vessel the likes of which you have never seen, the S. S. Amelia, the world’s largest gingerbread pirate ship, arrived at The Ritz-Carlton,

For more information, call (904) 277-1100. Join the Amelia Island Museum of History for their most anticipated event of the year. The Ninth Annual Holiday Home Tour will take place on Friday, December 4, and Saturday, December 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A high point of the Fernandina Beach festive yuletide season, this year will be a unique Holiday Home Tour showcasing six private beach homes located along the stunning Amelia Island coastline. These beautiful and exclusive homes will be decorated by professional florists and designers. Free trolley service will transport guests from a central parking area to the featured homes while costumed carolers and musicians entertain them
with seasonal selections. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.ameliahometours.com, or call the museum at (904) 261-7378. Wander and wonder through a true Victorian Christmas, made new through the spectacular “Dickens on Centre” event held December 4 through 13, in historic downtown Fernandina Beach. The historic district’s holiday season is already in full swing, kicked off in November with their annual Black Friday Pajama Party and annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. During Dickens on Centre, shoppers will enjoy street vendors, carolers, and stage performers animating the season during the weekends of December 4-6, and December 11-13. Saint Nick will arrive on Fridays, visiting with the young and the young at heart from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturdays and Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon, and 2 to 5 p.m. Readings of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” will occur Fridays and Saturday at 6:46 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m. Catch the spirit of the season at the annual Amelia Island Bed & Breakfast Holiday Cookie Tour, hosted by the Amelia

Enjoy the stylings of a classic big band, with a few modern twists! Also at Amelia Community Theatre is “Miracle on 34th Street,” based on the beloved film and novel, performed from December 3 through 19. This is a nostalgic holiday treat for the whole family. White’s beloved classic. With music and lyrics by Charles Strouse and book by Joseph Robinette, you will thrill to a musical score which includes “Eating,” Wilbur the pig’s humorous yet poignant song about growing up; “Who Says We Can’t Be Friends,” an enchanting duet between Wilbur and his new-found companion, Charlotte; “Welcome to the Zuckerman Barn,” featuring all the story’s unforgettable animals in a hand-clapping,
toe-tapping hoe-down; and “Summer,” a haunting, nostalgic chorus number which evokes a time and place from everyone’s childhood. For more information or to purchase tickets, call (904)277-3455 or visit www.ameliamusicalplayhouse.com. This year marks the nineteenth year of “An Evening in December,” which will be presented Friday and Sunday, December 11 and 13, at 7 p.m. at Amelia Baptist Church. The community is invited to enjoy this annual celebration of the Christmas Story, which is presented each year in a unique blend of choral music, drama, and dance. The theme of this year’s presentation is “Unexpected Joy.” The inspiring musical selections are diverse, including arrangements that are fresh, new expressions of familiar carols by several contemporary arrangers. The program also features two local dance students who are attending Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. Each year, the church offers an evening of music and drama as its gift to the community. No admission is charged. For more information, contact Pam Helton at (904) 261-9527 or Allen Lennon at (904) 261-8799.

For the first time in six years, Les DeMerle and Bonnie Eisele are spending the holidays at home on Amelia Island, jazzin’ up Christmas and New Year’s Eve with three performance nights, featuring two shows each night, held at Horizons Restaurant. The Jazz Spirit of Christmas Holiday Dinner and Show will be held on December 18 and 19, with seatings at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. On New Year’s Eve, seatings are at 7 and 9 p.m., and performances include music from the couple’s CD, “Feelin’ Good”. To make reservations, call Horizons at (904) 321-2430. On December 5 and 6, join Living History re-enactors at Fort Clinch for their annual Union Holiday Encampment. Ladies in their holiday finery will be trimming a Christmas tree and decorating the mantles for the holiday season. Sutlers display their wares, and drummer boys project the sounds of the Civil War era. The program allows visitors to interact with living historians to experience life in the fort as it was in 1864. This event is so much fun, and it’s great to watch children and families as they get into the spirit of the season as it was one hundred fifty years ago. For more information, call the fort at (904) 277-7274. Sponsored by America’s Youth Inc., the Annual Christmas Lighted Parade will take place in downtown Fernandina Beach on Thursday, December 10 beginning at 6 p.m. Those looking to participate in the parade can call (904) 264-5383 or (904) 583-1569. All ages and families are welcome to attend, and there will be judging on who makes the best potato pancakes! The Jewish Community of Amelia Island also meets monthly for Shabbat Services, and for high holidays. BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF NASSAU COUNTY PRESENTS NINTH ANNUAL BENEFIT GALA
FERNANDINA BEACH RECEIVES “GREAT PLACES IN FLORIDA” AWARD In early November this year, historic downtown Fernandina Beach was selected for the “Great Places in Florida People’s Choice Award”. Great Places in Florida is an awards program created to highlight Florida’s communities and the people that have created them. Great Places stand out with their exceptional character and lasting value. They are considered memorable, perhaps even famous, but also deeply cared for and valued, according to representatives of the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association. Along with citizens, planners, business leaders, and elected officials, the APA recognizes and celebrates communities that have a true sense of place, cultural and historic interest, and strong community involvement. Downtown Fernandina Beach received the most votes out of the four finalists, which also included Lakeland, Lake Worth, and the Gaines Street District in Tallahassee. The City of Fernandina Beach is grateful to the Amelia Island Tourist Development Council for submitting the nomination, and all who voted to help historic downtown Fernandina Beach win the award.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Nassau County presents its ninth annual benefit, the “Sweetheart Gala,” to be held on February 13, 2016, at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. The event will feature a concert performance by William Joseph, who as a piano prodigy at eight years old was awarded a full music scholarship by Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The evening will include dinner prepared by the renowned Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island kitchen, cocktails, and an exciting silent auction. The benefit is a vital source of funding for the operation of the two local Boys & Girls Clubs, in Fernandina Beach and Nassauville. The silent auction features fun adventures, vacations at outstanding resorts, and autographed collectables, plus offerings from local restaurants, hotels, and shops. Bidding will begin in early February from the full list of auction items available at www.bgcnassau. com. Cost is $200 per person, and reservations can be made by calling (904) 261-8666 or by email at info@bgcnassau. The Boys & Girls Clubs benefit has sold out in recent years, so be sure to call or email soon for reservations. Information about sponsorship opportunities, which are available at several levels, is available from the same phone and email contacts.

T
he Blue Door Artists are a unique collective of local, contemporary artists located in downtown Fernandina Beach. Unlike traditional galleries, the Blue Door Artists are working studio artists who rent work space and actively create art at the Blue Door. They pride themselves on featuring some of the island’s finest selection of original art in a variety of media to suit every taste and budget. Collectors from all over the world seek out the gallery. This year, two new individuals have joined the group, bringing their artwork to “the top of the stairs.” Jeweler Cori Beychok is an artist who began collecting gems while still a toddler and studied jewelry-making and gemology in Boston. She shares a studio with Jane Hedgecock, a masterful weaver who creates beautiful hand-woven baskets and specializes in the traditional Nantucket style. Jane is also an accomplished woodworker. The other artists featured at the gallery include Sharon Badenoch, Suzanne Batchelor, Theresa Daily, Liz
Dion, Sharon Haffey, Casey Matthews, and Georganna Mullis. December is a great time to visit the gallery, as the artists produce special items for gift-giving, including greeting cards, smaller paintings, baskets, jewelry, and more. Visitors will get a preview of the artwork when walking up the stairs to the gallery, where each artist has painted a stair in their own particular style. Once a month, the Blue Door Artists are open until 8 p.m. for Amelia Island’s festive Second Saturday Artrageous Artwalk. In addition to wine and hors d’oeuvres, visitors will enjoy speaking to the members of the collective, talented artists who work with various media including oil, acrylics, and water colors, plus collage, jewelry, basketry, and woodworking. Blue Door is open Monday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit their Facebook page or their website at www.bluedoorartists.com and click on each individual artist to view their own personal web sites.

ori and John Lecker are visionaries when it comes to fashion. Having owned Benetton stores all over the Southeast, they have made designer clothing their lifelong careers. Two years ago, the couple opened lori+lulu, a highly successful women’s clothing boutique in downtown Fernandina Beach, but the size of the store made it impossible to expand. “We saw a void in the market here for Southern prep clothing,” says Lori. “And since we couldn’t enlarge our store, we decided to open another one— Pearl, A Luxury Resort Boutique.” Besides specializing in high-end resort wear for women, Pearl also carries swimwear, lingerie, and jewelry. “John and I love discussing our business and developing new concepts,” says Lori. “Pearl is turning out to be exactly what we had envisioned— from the look of the building to the designer brands we carry. For instance, we don’t just feature a few items from a designer, we carry the full collection and merchandise it collectively, the way the designer envisioned it.” These designers include Lily Pulitzer, Gretchen Scott, Trina Turk, Karla Colleto, Camilla, Tasha London, and Tory Burch, available in Spring 2016. “Our clients are very fashion-forward,” says Lori. “They know these designers, and they are pleased to discover they can get the fashions they want right here on Amelia Island.” “We love downtown Fernandina Beach,” says Lori. “With Pearl, and lori+lulu, we are excited to be part of that transformation.” Pearl is located at 205 Centre Street. n 2005, Ness Sala began selling insurance when the Medicare Modernization Act of 2004 and Medicare Advantage Plans began offering new options for seniors. But when a friend in the business suggested he train new insurance agents, Ness knew that’s what he was cut out to do. “My wife, Kristi, and I train agents on the different plans offered from United Healthcare, Humana, Aetna, and others,” says Ness. He has now trained over four hundred agents from all over the country. “But we started off small,” says Ness. “Kristi and I began our business at our dining room table!” As the business grew, the couple moved into an office on Sadler Road, which allowed them to offer plans directly to consumers. When they needed more room to meet the growing demand from clients here on Amelia Island, they purchased the former Barnabas Center building on So. 11th Street. Ness and Kristi knew they were committed to their work when they spent part of their honeymoon in a tent in Kenya, processing insurance forms. “We were on a deadline,” laughs Ness. “So we had to fit work into our honeymoon trip.” Compass Group Insurance opened in 2008, and they are the only agency in the area whose primary focus is Medicare and health insurance. “We have a close relationship with our employees, our clients, the insurance companies, and physicians,” says Ness. “We’re able to give our customers more options. Chances are, no matter what your situation or budget, we can find a Medicare or health plan that works for you.” For more information, call (904) 746-4648 or visit www.compassgroupinsurance.com.

ust as Bubba advised Forrest in the movie, Forrest Gump, shrimp have great value in the marketplace. Descendants of the families that were part of the Fernandina’s shrimping boom remember the glory days when Fernandina was considered the “birthplace of the modern shrimping industry.” For six decades beginning in the 1920s, shrimp ruled. A museum dedicated to the shrimping industry is located in the Welcome Center on Front Street and is operated by the Amelia Island Museum of History. The personalities that were integral to the glory days of shrimping are highlighted and include Mike Salvador, William Burban, Michael Tiliakos, Dematrios Deonas, and Bill Burbank.
“Anyway, like I was sayin’, shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey’s uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That – that’s about it.” - Benjamin Buford “Bubba” Blue to Forrest Gump
Amelia Island has had its economic ups and downs through the centuries. With its beauty, location, and deep natural harbor, it has changed hands and flags many times. The French were here first, but only briefly. The Spanish used it as a port as they explored and conquered
the New World. The English established plantations. During Jefferson’s embargo, a variety of groups took advantage of the opportunity to transport illegal goods and slaves the short distance to Georgia and the United States. Each group had their own economic base. David Yulee and his vision of a vital Florida railroad brought jobs and prosperity to the island just prior to and after the Civil War. Most of the leaders in the so-called Golden Age were connected in one way or another. The port thrived. Ironically, it was the railroad that later took business and tourism away from Amelia Island. As the railroads extended south, Amelia Island quite literally went to sleep. continued on page 52.

Mike Bowling BY DICKIE ANDERSON PHOTOS BY STEPHEN LEIMBERG, UNSEENIMAGES.COM
M
ike Bowling, the creator of the internationally famous Pound Puppies toy phenomenon, walks his own two pound puppies, Buster and Bella, every morning on the beach in front of his home. He has lived on Amelia Island since 1993, and his love for the island and the community is evident. His modesty is impressive as he shares the amazing ride that brought him to the pinnacle of the aggressive and unpredictable international toy market with his Pound Puppies. Bowling has lived the American dream. After 20 years working on an assembly line at a Ford assembly plant in Cincinnati and raising a family, he took the leap and followed his dream. A gift of a handmade doll to his young daughter and her enthusiasm for it sparked a journey that made his plush toys, Pound Puppies, the number one toy in the world. His friends and mentors had confidence in him and his idea, too, and they made it possible for him to move forward with his dream. One of his proudest moments was the day he received his first big advance check from a major toy manufacturer. That day, he wrote checks repaying all those who had believed in and supported him. Where did the idea for Pound Puppies come from? Bowling believed that children would respond to the idea of ownership and to collecting different puppies. Who could resist a cute little puppy head poking out of a cleverly designed doghouse box? His is not just a rags-toSplashlings, a new collection riches story. It is about the focus, coming February 2016 passion, and hard work that go into making a dream come true. Bowling’s puppies were just the beginning of a series of other collectibles, which include Pound Purries, Pound Ponies, and the latest, Splashlings, set to launch in February 2016.
Not that there aren’t ups and downs. One toy line was dependent on batteries, which failed, resulting in a disappointing experience. A favorite quote of Bowling’s comes from one of his mentors. “The best batteries for children’s toys are a child’s imagination.” No batteries in future toys. Creative people never stop creating, and Mike Bowling is as full of ideas and plans as he was when he first launched Pound Puppies all those years ago. The Splashlings that will debut in February are another group of collectibles that are focused on a marine theme. Look for mermaids as the main characters, with one named Amelia. Plans are in the works for a full-length movie. Above all else, Bowling and his wife, Charlotte, love Amelia Island. After searching for a home in a warmer climate, Bowling found Amelia Island and never looked back. Since then, he has been an unofficial island ambassador, bringing lots of friends and colleagues to the island, including entrepreneur and city commissioner Tim Poynter. Bowling enjoys a group of men friends, the Marauders, who meet for golf outings and support various island golf fundraisers, such as the Marine Corp League, the Amelia Island Museum of History, and the Navy Seals Foundation. Very active in community activities, Mike and Charlotte are supporters of animal rescue, reading programs for kids, the Nassau County Humane Society, and Joy to the Children.

book festival returns With new programs and new venues, the Amelia Island Book Festival returns February 18-20, 2016 under Honorary Festival Chairman Steve Berry. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTOS COURTESY OF AMELIA ISLAND BOOK FESTIVAL
W
ith a fresh format and new venues, exciting changes are in store for attendees at the upcoming fifteenth annual Amelia Island Book Festival, and one of the biggest changes is the naming of author Steve Berry as Honorary Festival Chairman. With more than fifteen international best sellers, Berry’s books have been translated into forty languages, with nineteen million copies sold in fifty-one countries. Berry is no stranger to Nassau County. In 2006, he was awarded the Stellar Award for his outstanding contributions to literacy by the Amelia Island Book Festival. “I’ve been coming to Amelia Island and its many book festivals for a long time,” says Berry. “This year, I’m honored to serve in an advisory role and work with the board to make this the best event in the history of the festival.” “The Board of Directors is thrilled to have Steve Berry as honorary chair and his help in getting us authors such as Greg Iles, Andrew Gross, and so many others,” says Festival Chairperson Raffaela Marie Rizzo Fenn. “His guidance has been invaluable. We expect a record crowd this year with our
new venues and format!” Berry will appear in several events throughout the three-day festival, along with several other New York Times best-selling headliners. The Book Festival kicks off on Thursday, February 18, with a luncheon featuring New York Times best-selling author and keynote speaker Andrew Gross, who will be introduced by Berry. alluring amaryllis New Amaryllis bulbs are ready to be planted, and they will add much-needed color and a graceful presence to your winter garden. BY BETTY MORRELL
T
his year has literally slipped away! We have come to the end of a great gardening year, and right now we are all yearning for bright colors, as winters can be quite drab. Thankfully, we have a lot of new plants and bulbs to choose from that will give your garden some muchneeded color. I love Amaryllis. New Amaryllis bulbs are now available that will add a big splash of color when planted in masses, and they will multiply and return every year. If you drive down South Fletcher Avenue towards the golf course, you’ll noticed the wonderful display of Amaryllis on the west side under a raised deck? The mass of mixed colors sparkle in the bright sunshine reflecting off the ocean. One new Amaryllis bulb is called “Big Amadeus.” It sports nine-inch double blooms that are intricately traced with reddish pink veins. The curved, gently ruffled petals open fully to reveal a pale green throat. They are so pretty, and what a showy size! Another new Amaryllis is the “Magnum.” A red Amaryllis is traditional at holiday

time, and Magnum delivers beyond expectations. As petals unfurl, they reveal an unusual soft green along their tips, which adds a dramatic and elegant contrast to the intense red tones. Amaryllis Cherry Nymph (in the Nymph series) produces huge, almost fully double flowers, whose rich texture and vibrant red colors set new standards of beauty. The large red blooms of Cherry Nymph have a shimmering, iridescent quality, and its thick, strong stems easily support them. They make great cut flowers, too. Two other new beauties are Purple Rain and Coral Beach. Purple Rain looks like two big tropical butterflies. The two-toned pink blooms of Purple Rain feature deep pink veining and they

are quite beautiful. Coral Beach has large six to seven-inch blooms, which are intricately designed with dark reddish pink veins and neatly pointed petal tips. In our area, Amaryllis bulbs can be put directly in the ground. Be sure to plant where they will get six to eight hours of direct sun each day. Since we do have some freezes, it is recommended that you plant the bulb so the neck has six inches of soil above it, followed by an application of mulch several inches thick. Water the areas thoroughly after planting. Once growth starts, water only if rain is infrequent and the top two inches of soil are dry. After the leaves appear, fertilize with a balanced fertilizer, such as 10-10-10. Repeat once a month through April. From June through September, keep the area dry. If leaves turn yellow, cut them off at the base. Next month, we’ll have some wonderful plants for 2016. I have seen the new plants, and want them all in my garden! Please send your gardening questions to me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Happy Gardening!

ynne Anderson’s cottage home on South 7th Street offer’s inspiration to those living in small spaces. Her home was one of the five houses offered on last year’s Amelia Island Museum of History’s Annual Holiday Home Tour. Anderson renovated a 1920s cottage into her perfect island home. Truly a labor of love, each detail in the cottage has been cleverly designed and crafted. Lynne was flattered that her home was featured for a second time on the tour last year. In 2009, her home had approximately eleven hundred visitors; last year, more than eighteen hundred people toured the cottage.
Lynne has nothing but enthusiasm for the museum and its many volunteers. “The tour chairs, housemothers, and docents were just wonderful and kept everything running smoothly and efficiently,” she says. The annual Holiday Home Tour is the museum’s major fundraiser. Each house featured on the annual tour is decorated by an island florist or decorator. This house is a certified winner. Anderson smiles as she talks about the thrill of finding out in 2012 that her attic renovation had been awarded “Best Living Space Renovation” by the popular magazine, This Old House.

One of the factors in her purchase of the shingle cottage was the amazing opportunity that the 700 square foot unfinished attic space offered. She imagined the space as her dream master bedroom. She now enjoys a space that has a fireplace, an elegant walk-in shower, and a dressing area. The pine tongue-and-groove ceiling offered a perfect solution to the dramatic angles the roof presented. The house is filled with arts and crafts created by Anderson’s parents. Her father created beautiful stained glass window panels and lamps. The light fixture over the dining room table is the 588-piece stained glass masterpiece that originally hung in her parents’ home in Hobe Sound. Throughout the house are beautiful examples of her mother’s talent. Of note in many rooms of the cottage are stencil patterns that highlight various architectural elements. Anderson found the Arts and Crafts-era original designs on the Internet. Each room uses a different design. Starting with the dining room, she quickly learned the art of stenciling and continued adding stencil detail throughout the house. The color palette for the downstairs of the house combines washed gold and salmon red, colors she first spotted in a restaurant in Bergen, Norway. The emphasis varies slightly from room-to-room, but always works off those two main colors. Members of the Burbank family. The Burbank Net Company is well-known for producing nets for shrimp and fish trawlers. Later they produced nets used for sports. Left to right: Billy Burbank, Jr., Bill Burbank, Sr., Frank Burbank, Sr., Billy Burbank, III, Charles Jones, Jr. Shrimp from page 29.
The next economic boon came as a result of a fateful combination of strong personalities and talents, as well as a thriving shrimp population in the waters off Amelia Island. These tiny crustaceans in their wild form have sustained people for thousands of years. Long before Europeans ever reached the North Florida coast, the native Timucuan Indians caught shrimp in cleverly woven weirs. The waters were rich in tiny white shrimp, but they were always caught in small batches and eaten immediately. Then things changed. Entrepreneurial innovators who came from Portugal, Italy, and Scandinavia revolutionized the catching and distribution of shrimp. They joined local families who had harvested shrimp a bushel at a time with cast nets for years. The newcomers designed new boats and net systems that were able to harvest thousands of shrimp. In addition, the invention of refrigerated rail cars allowed for the shipping of shrimp a greater distance to new markets. For 60 years, close to a hundred shrimp boats were docked in the harbor. Now less than 20 shrimp boats remain in

business. A combination of factors have contributed to the decline, including the increasing costs of doing business and the importation of farm-raised shrimp. Indirectly shrimping impacted the economy of Amelia in another way. In 1963, the City of Fernandina looked into creating an annual festival kicking off the shrimping season, blessing the boats, and having a celebration. It was an instant hit. The annual event now attracts 150,000 people over two days and is one of the most popular festivals in the southeastern United States. Shrimp remains a treasured delicacy, and Amelia Island restaurants continue to support local shrimpers who still venture out into the deep waters off Amelia Island to harvest the mouth-watering white shrimp. Most agree Amelia Island’s locally caught shrimp can’t be matched. For more information on shrimping on Amelia Island, a new book called Amelia Island: Birthplace of the Modern Shrimping Industry by Gray Edenfield is available at the Amelia Island Museum of History.

Beech Street BAR & GRILL
With new ownership and a lively, redesigned interior, the Beech Street Bar & Grill offers classic dishes with creative flair in a charming setting. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
T
he Beech Street Bar and Grill is newly owned by visionary Tim Lawther and his wife, Merrie Ann, whose focus is to create classic dishes with a twist in a modern environment. Beech Street still has its original ambiance, but the restaurant is brighter, and livelier, with abstract art and a few modern touches. I invited my friend, Pat Foster-Turley, to join me one night for dinner, and we were in for a treat. Our server, Ashton, was quick with suggestions for drinks, so I ordered Raeburn Chardonnay, and Pat tried a “Spicy Hattie,” a specialty cocktail created by bartender Mark Currie with vodka,
jalapenos, and lime. The wine was smooth and dry, and Pat loved her cocktail, which was refreshing and not too sweet, with a tasty bite of heat. Tim brought us Charcuterie Palette to start, which consisted of Prosciutto, Serrano ham, Finocchiona, which is a type of salami, aged Gouda, and Manchego, served with a coarse mustard, honey, toasted almonds, grapes and crostini. We loved this platter! It was a great way to start our meal.
Tim and Chef Charles Kamback planned a tasting for us, so we could try several items on their vast menu. First up was a crab cake, served with homemade Remoulade sauce, a bit of lemon gel, and mustard seed “caviar”. The crab cake was bound with sabayon, a light custard, and the flavor was delicate – and I loved the interesting condiments! We also tasted Grouper Ceviche, marinated with finger lime, red and green peppers, and cilantro, and served with crostini. A small shot of the marinade, called “Milk of the Tiger,” was served on the side, which then can used to dip toasted bread. Tim and Ashton brought us two salads. One was a wedge of iceberg served with blue cheese, red onion, and lardons, drizzled with blue cheese dressing, and the other, a different take on a Caesar salad, bursting with the flavors of black and white garlic, parmesan toasts, and croutons. The dressing was earthy and slightly sweet. Both salads were divine! For our entrees, Ashton set out two different wines to pair—one was New Harbor Sauvignon Blanc, and the other, Upper Cut Cabernet. Our entrees were Smokin’ Scallops, the restaurant’s most popular entrée, along with Shrimp and Grits, and Beef Cheeks. The scallops were amazing, served over vanilla polenta with crispy pork belly, house hot sauce, and topped with a crispy shallot salad. The Shrimp and Grits are made with local shrimp, served atop a stone ground grit cake with Tasso ham, arugula, and hot sauce. The Beef Cheeks was really a stew, served with homemade Tagliatelle, and wild mushroom Marsala. Each dish was perfectly cooked, with a good balance of flavors and textures. For dessert, Chef Charles created a delicious warm carrot cake with cream cheese icing, and Ashton brought us dessert beer, Terrapin Peanut Butter Chocolate. It was ideal with our cake! Beech Street makes nearly everything from scratch, including their pasta, mozzarella, and they source local seafood and meats. They are open Tuesday through Sunday for dinner, and available for special events. They also serve brunch on Sundays. Christmas Tradition BY KAREN MILLER
W
hen my children were little many years ago, I began a holiday tradition of making Springerle cookies on Thanksgiving weekend. I am unaware of any Bavarian branches in my family tree, which is where I believe Springerle has its roots. But I was drawn to the beautiful and intricate artistry of the Springerle molds, which are handcarved out of wood, usually depicting whimsical holiday scenes or religious Christmas designs. In the past, I have used many different molds or special Springerle rolling pins, all of which I
purchased at thrift shops or antique stores through the years. When it comes to Springerle cookies, the taste is just as important as the design. That’s why I like to make them almost one month before Christmas. Springerle is an anise cookie, which improves with age after you bake it. Even the texture changes somehow, going from hard and crisp to buttery, like shortbread. The anise flavor is sharp when the cookie is first baked. As it sits in a tin box for a month, the anise flavor

Preparation beat in the sugar. Sift together the Àour, baking Beat the eggs with an electric mixer for 10 minutes. Gradually the lemon zest and 1/2 teaspoon of the anise powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients along with hours. Divide the dough into fourths. Roll 1/4 seeds to the egg mixture. Mix well. Cover tightly and chill 4-5 mold. Cut the individual cookies apart with a inch thick, dust lightly with Àour, and press with a Springerle e, cover with a towel and let stand to dry cutter wheel or sharp knife. Place them on a lightly Àoured surfac cookies, place them on the sheets, and bake at overnight. Grease baking sheets. actually grows stronger, yet the cookie takes on a rich and gentle note. For best results, use anise oil or finely ground anise seed rather than anise extract. The dough is easy to make, but the process itself is a little complicated. You must roll out your dough, stamp your cookies with your mold, cut them up, and then let them sit overnight before you bake them. Be sure to have enough baking sheets on hand. The sitting allows the cookie to dry out a bit. Then they are baked in a low and slow oven until they are done, yet they should never brown, not even a little. Expert Springerle bakers make cookies that are so white you would be amazed that they are baked at all. If you are looking to buy traditional wooden molds and can’t find any locally, a good web site is www.cookiemold. com. Their molds are hand-carved by a talented artist named Gene Wilson and crafted in the United States. They make excellent gifts for your favorite bakers and are pretty enough to hang on a wall. Be sure to keep your baked Springerle cookies in an airtight tin, hidden away in a dark cupboard until Christmas morning. If you leave them sitting on the counter, you may not have any left for the holidays!
