different ways that Amelia Island

celebrates the holidays.

Each year in December, we take great pleasure in presenting all the different ways that Amelia Island celebrates the holidays. Christmas is a wonderful time here, and the joy of the season shines brightly. If you’re walking on the beach, you might see a sandman Santa; if you’re downtown, you might see a parade of costumed paws or a full-blown Victorian Christmas; and if you’re at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort or The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, you might encounter a winter wonderland decorated with thousands of twinkling lights or pirate ship made entirely from gingerbread. Of course, the holidays are celebrated in myriad ways in homes and churches around the island. Amelia Island is a little like Ebenezer Scrooge on Christmas morning this time of year, brimming with generosity and good will. Many residents selflessly share their time and treasure to make this season special for those in need through Barnabas, Joy to the Children, and various church initiatives. The spirit of Christmas is strong on Amelia Island in large part because of the vitality of our churches, and we are grateful for their inspiration. We can share that spirit by lending a helping hand and by gathering with our families to count our own blessings. Behind the shopping lists, twinkling lights, and rich food is the “reason for the season,” as it is said, and we celebrate that with concerts, Christmas pageants, and time for reflection. Every season on Amelia Island has its special joys, but we think the Christmas season shows off our island paradise at its best. To that end, we have included all the holiday happenings we could find in our December cover story, including the Amelia Island Museum of History’s Holiday Home Tour, the Amelia Island B&B Association’s Cookie Tour, the return of “Dickens on Centre” to downtown Fernandina Beach, “Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol Musical” at Amelia Community Theatre, a jazz Christmas show with the Dynamic Les DeMerle Trio with Bonnie Eisele, a big band Christmas concert with Crescendo Amelia, and many others. We hope you find time to share in the spirit of season by joining events at your church, spending time with those closest to you, and spreading a little good cheer. Also in this issue, we take a closer look at the “Dickens on Centre” events, as it returns for a second Christmas season; get the latest news from the Amelia Island Club, which continues to prosper as a member-owned club; chronicle the adventures of Petey the Pirate of the Palace Saloon; learn some great recipes for holiday cocktails; and much more. And so, from our family to yours, we wish you Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and a very Happy New Year! See you around the island!

ach December, Amelia Island is transformed into a magical wonderland, beckoning visitors and locals to join together for the holidays. With sun, sea, and indigo skies as its backdrop, Christmas comes to life unlike any other place on earth. Do Amelia Islanders miss the snow? How could we, when we have white, sandy beaches to dip our toes into this time of the year? The holidays begin early here on Amelia Island, starting in mid-November with Christmas craft shows, musical events, and theatre performances. And not long after the Thanksgiving turkey has been eaten, tree-lighting ceremonies are held, and the downtown merchants have kicked off the shopping season with their annual Pajama Party sale. Look around the island and you will see Amelia’s historic bed-and-breakfast inns decorated with garlands and greenery. The Salvation Army volunteers are ringing their bells, children are trying their best to be good, and local businesses are bustling with cheerful shoppers. Churches are preparing for their

pageants and special services, and Amelia Islanders are doing what they do best—enjoying their beautiful island paradise. At the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort, the fun has already begun with their annual Holiday Tree Lighting at The Shops, held during Thanksgiving week. Enjoy the magic and twinkling lights while you shop and dine there throughout the holiday season. For more information about holiday events, call (904) 261-6161. If you’re staying at the hotel and need more information about local events and activities, call the concierge at (904) 432-1467. A sailing vessel the likes of which you have never seen, the S. S. Amelia, the world’s largest gingerbread pirate ship, arrived at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, just in time for their tree lighting ceremony, which was held during Thanksgiving week. The pirate ship is made of over 600 pieces of gingerbread, and festooned with fondant-sculpted seafarers. The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island is sparkling with holiday allure, enhancing the numerous events held there throughout the season, from

Breakfast with Santa to fine holiday dining opportunities and overall family fun. For more information, call (904) 277-1100. One of the island’s most treasured holiday events is the Amelia Island Holiday Home Tour, held the first weekend in December. This tour, hosted by the Amelia Island Museum of History, offers the public a rare opportunity to go inside some of Fernandina Beach’s loveliest historic homes, private residences that are decked out for the season and graciously opened to visitors. This year’s tour features five Victorian-era homes located in the downtown Historic District. The self-paced tour allows guests to leisurely stroll through the downtown on Friday, December 2, and Saturday, December 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. while visiting each home. Step onto the front porches and through historic thresholds to glimpse these beautiful homes in their holiday attire, all decorated by professional designers. Guests will also hear the history of these special homes of Fernandina, narrated by museum staff and volunteers. Victorian-dressed carolers will add to the holiday spirit by serenading visitors at each stop. For more information, call (904) 261-7378 or visit www.ameliamuseum.com. On the evening of December 2, witness a two-mile long glow from luminaries lining sidewalks on both sides of

Atlantic Avenue from S. 14th Street to Jean LaFitte Blvd. and the GFWC Woman’s Club of Fernandina Beach. Christmas Glow is an annual holiday tradition held on the first Friday evening of December each year, and it includes free punch and cookies, visits with Santa Claus, face painting, entertainment, and Chick-Fil-A sandwiches available for purchase. The Woman’s Club is located at 201 Jean LaFitte Boulevard. For more information, call (904) 261-6088. And while you’re downtown the first weekend in December, be sure to bring your little ones to the second annual Friends of the Library Children’s Holiday Party on Saturday, December 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Fernandina Beach Library, located at 24 North 4th Street. There will be readings of several holiday books and an arts and crafts station that coincides with the themes of the featured books. Also planned are guest appearances from local firemen, who will let the children tour one of their trucks, and other fun surprises for the kids! For more information, call (904) 277-7365. On December 3 and 4, join Living History re-enactors at Fort Clinch for their annual Union Holiday Encampment. Ladies in their holiday finery will be trimming a Christmas tree and decorating the mantles for the holiday season. Sutlers display their wares, and drummer boys provide the sounds

It’s time to travel back to Victorian days from December 8-11 during the second annual Dickens on Centre Festival in historic downtown Fernandina Beach. Free to the public, this Victorian-inspired holiday festival is as fun as the dickens for the entire family. Enjoy costumed characters, themed entertainment and performances, visits from Saint Nick, and a variety of vendors selling seasonal gifts and wares. Inspired by Charles Dickens’ novella, A Christmas Carol, Dickens on Centre transforms downtown Fernandina Beach into a classic English village, sure to enliven your Christmas spirit with chestnuts roasting, carolers strolling, and readings of “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” On Thursday, December 8, America’s Youth lights up the downtown with the annual Lighted Christmas Parade, celebrating “A Musical Christmas,” at 6 p.m. Then, throughout the Dickens weekend, visitors will be treated to numerous events, including Candlelight Victorian Evensong at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, concerts on the main stage from Nassau

Community Band, the Fernandina Beach High School Band and Chorus, the Song Spinners, and Crescendo Amelia, as well as Amelia Island Museum of History Walking Tours, activities for the children, and so much more. For more information and a complete schedule of events, visit www.ameliaisland.com. Catch the spirit of the season at the annual Amelia Island Bed and Breakfast Holiday Cookie Tour, hosted by the Amelia Island Bed and Breakfast Association on Saturday, December 10, from noon until 5 p.m. You are invited to experience a special afternoon of delicious sweet treats as six of Amelia Island’s classic inns and charming bed-and-breakfasts dress up in festive holiday finery and open their doors. At each of these Historic District inns, you can sample a signature cookie, collect some great decorating ideas, and take home a beautifully printed recipe card just in time for holiday baking. You’ll even learn a historical tidbit or two from Amelia Island Museum of History docent guides as you peek inside Amelia Island’s prettiest “ornaments.” Complimentary horse-drawn carriage and trolley rides will be available from inn to inn, or enjoy the view on foot with

Enjoy breakfast with Santa and see his magical Christmas village and train displays. If live theatre is your preference, there are numerous Christmas and holiday performances throughout the season on Amelia Island. From December 1 through December 17, “Ebenezer—A Christmas Carol,” will make its northeast Florida premiere at Amelia Community Theatre. An original production, Ebenezer is a lighthearted interpretation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol that features music from all genres, including gospel, country, rock, and jazz. For more information and tickets, visit www.ameliacommunitytheatre.org. On December 9 and 10, step back in time at Amelia Musical Playhouse and tune in to staged readings from legendary comedians of the past like George Burns, Gracie Allen, Fred Allen, and more. In between the skits, there will be holiday musical numbers in which audience members can sing along. For tickets, visit www.ameliamusicalplayhouse.com. This year marks the 20th anniversary of “An Evening in December,” presented Friday and Sunday, December 9 and 11 at Amelia Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach. The community is invited to enjoy this annual celebration of the Christmas Story, which is presented in a unique blend of music and drama. Each year, the church offers this special presentation

Les DeMerle and Bonnie Eisele are spending the holidays on Amelia Island this year, jazzin’ up Christmas with four shows at Horizons Restaurant. The Jazz Spirit of Christmas Holiday Dinner and Show will be held on December 9 and 10, with seatings at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Join Les and Bonnie performing holiday classics from their award-winning CD on Origin Records, “The Jazz Spirit of Christmas”, in an intimate setting with Chef Courtney Thompson’s three-course gourmet dinner and wine. It is a joyous holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean revolt some 2,200 years ago. The Jewish Community of Amelia Island (JCAI) is holding its Hanukkah party at the Property Owners

Clubhouse at Amelia Island Plantation, and it is open to all those who wish to celebrate on the first night of Hanukkah, December 24 at 6 p.m. In addition to a latke cooking contest, everyone brings an appetizer, entrée, or dessert to share. Bring your family menorah and join in the fun! Join the City of Fernandina Beach and Light Up Amelia for a unique, family-friendly New Year’s Celebration at the downtown waterfront. Celebrate the ringing in of the New Year in conjunction with the Greenwich Mean Time stroke of midnight, which is at 7 p.m. The event will feature live music, a kids zone, vendors, holiday food and drink, all leading up to the dropping of the LED-lighted shrimp. Visit www.ameliaisland.com for updates on these and other holiday events. Be sure to check with the local churches for the dates of their pageants and craft shows, and don’t forget our local charities! Micah’s Place, Joy to the Children, the Hope House, and many other charities need donations of time and gifts this season. Enjoy the season here on Amelia Island, and spread some holiday cheer of your own!

CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE PRINTS AT FERNANDINA BEACH LIBRARY Friends of the Fernandina Beach Library are presenting an exhibition of contemporary Japanese prints from the collection of Amelia Island residents Christine and Paul Meehan in the new meeting room gallery space at Fernandina Beach Branch Library. The Meehans are sharing a portion of their collection with the Amelia Island community to enhance the community’s understanding and appreciation of Japanese art. The Meehan collection has been previously exhibited at the Morikami Museum in Delray, Florida. It exemplifies all the major printmaking techniques in use today, including woodblock, intaglio, and others. The exhibition includes examples of each technique, with an emphasis on woodblock printing, which the Japanese have excelled at from the early 1600s to today. Highlighting the exhibition will be a print from Toko Shinoda, who at 103 years old is considered a Japanese national living treasure. Christine and Paul Meehan have been collecting modern Japanese prints since they first met in New York City in 1975. The Fernandina Beach Library is located at 25 North 4th Street. The exhibition runs through December 30.

“AN EVENING IN DECEMBER” RETURNS TO AMELIA BAPTIST CHURCH ON DECEMBER 9 “An Evening in December” will be presented on Friday, December 9 at 7 p.m., and twice on Sunday, December 11 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., at Amelia Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach. The Amelia Island community is invited to enjoy this annual celebration of the Christmas story, which is presented each year in a unique blend of choral music, drama, and dance. The theme this year is “This Baby Changes Everything.” Complementing the music is an original drama developed by the Amelia Baptist Drama Team and presented by church and community actors. This is the 20th presentation of “An Evening in December,” offering an evening of music, drama, and dance as its gift to the community. A chorus of 98 singers and 14 instrumentalists from around northeast Florida will join in this celebration of Christmas, including performers from the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, and the University of North Florida. Admission is free. Childcare through age four is available with reservations. To inquire about childcare, call the church office at (904) 261-9527. Amelia Baptist Church is located at 961167 Buccaneer Trail at the roundabout near Harris Teeter.

The “Jazz Spirit of Christmas” Holiday Dinner and Show will be held December 9 and 10, with seatings at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Join Les and Bonnie as they perform holiday classics from “The Jazz Spirit of Christmas,” their awardwinning CD from Origin Records, in an intimate setting with Chef Courtney Thompson’s threecourse gourmet dinner and wine. “The Trio this year will feature our number one pianist, Doug Matthews, joining me and Bonnie, along with some very special guests,” says DeMerle. “This is going to be a swingin’ Christmas show for the whole family!” “The Jazz Spirit of Christmas” CD features songs such as “The Christmas Song,” with Tom Snow’s arrangement providing a poetic intro and featuring Eisele’s fine vocals. DeMerle does a very impressive Louis Armstrong-type turn with his singing in the Bourbon Street offerings of “Merry Christmas, Baby” and “Santa Claus Is Near.” These songs and many more will be performed throughout the evening. To make reservations, call Horizons at (904) 321-2430. Horizons is located at 5272 First Coast Highway.

he Blue Door welcomed its first artists almost two decades ago, and it continues to offer visitors who climb its colorful steps a glimpse into the working studios and galleries of the nine artists who form this unique collective of local artists. Acrylic, oil, watercolor, alcohol inks, photography, collage, jewelry, and weaving are all featured at The Blue Door, located at 205 1/2 Centre Street. Each of the artists has a distinctive personality and artistic style. Casey Matthews has been creating visually intriguing mixed media pieces for over 14 years. Her unmistakable work can be found in numerous galleries throughout the country and installations around the globe. Liz Dion is highly respected for her ability to juggle her painting and work as an architect. Recently named the Island Art Association’s Artist of the Year, contemporary landscape artist Sharon Haffey calls the studio that showcases her colorful paintings and photographs her “happy place.”

Theresa Daily has taken on her newest medium of alcohol inks with great passion. Realist Suzanne Batchelor is currently painting the birds and wildlife of Amelia while recovering from surgery. When not painting her images of the island, artist Sharon Badenoch can be found on the golf course. She shares a space with Georganna Mullis, who has been an integral part of Fernandina’s art community for more than 40 years. Jane Hedgecock is a masterful weaver, who painstakingly creates her traditional Nantucket-style baskets, and jeweler Cori Beychok produces exquisite designs for her gallery. The Blue Door is open until 8 p.m. for Amelia Island’s Second Saturday Artrageous Artwalk, when visitors can meet the members of the collective. December is a great time to visit, as many special items for gift-giving can be found. The Blue Door is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Visit their Facebook page or their website at www.bluedoorartists.com.

ott’s Furniture has been furnishing South Georgia and North Florida homes since 1947, when it was founded by Jack H. Lott as an appliance store in Waycross, Georgia. The business quickly grew into a home furnishings store, and today it is owned and managed by Jack E. Lott, who joined his father in the business in 1974 and became president and CEO in 1978. In 2007, Lott’s welcomed its third generation when Jack E.’s daughter, Laura Lott Harris, entered the family business to open and manage Lott’s Amelia Island store. “Our customers have a wide variety of tastes,” says Laura. “From coastal to transitional to eclectic, we carry something for everyone at Lott’s. Our home furnishings are beautifully displayed in room settings, and we offer a complete interior design service to help you create your dream space. In addition to our furniture, bedding, and accessories, we also offer floor, wall, and window coverings.” Laura has recently returned from market, where she was wowed by the latest design trends, and she is eager to share them with her customers. “Grey tones are very popular right now,” she says. “And we’re seeing a lot of items made from reclaimed materials, as well as sustainable products.” “We pride ourselves on great customer service and our fabulous merchandise selection, including really unique, one-of-a-kind items that you won’t find anywhere else!” says Laura. Lott’s is located at 1112 South 14th Street. For more information, call (904) 261-6333 or visit www.lottsfurniture. com or their Facebook page.

ormed 30 years ago, the Nassau Humane Society is dedicated to the mission of saving homeless animals and finding them loving permanent homes. NHS volunteers foster puppies, kittens, and animals with special requirements until they are ready for adoption. “During our last fiscal year, we adopted out 926 animals to permanent homes, which was a record year for us,” says Acting Executive Director Marianna McIntyre. “We moved into our wonderful new shelter two years ago, and while it does not replace a home for our animals, this shelter is the next best thing.” Dogs enjoy outdoor play, walks by volunteer dog walkers, and they are well cared for by staff and volunteers at the shelter. Cats have an indoor and outdoor cattery, and they enjoy playing on climbing structures and relaxing on the porch. Nassau Humane Society depends on fundraising and donations for their operating costs. “We just completed our 12th annual “Pasta for Paws” event, in which we raised over $21,000!” says McIntyre. “This event was an opportunity for the community to come together and show support for our mission, and it gives us a great opportunity to share our ‘no-kill’ approach to animal rescue with the hundreds of attendees.” NHS also operates a dog park, the Second Chance Resale Store, and provides community outreach and education. They also collaborate with other service organizations to provide low-cost veterinary care and spay and neuter services. Kick off the weekend on Thursday with another tradition: the downtown Fernandina Beach annual lighted America’s Youth Christmas Parade, celebrating “A Musical Christmas.” On Friday, head downtown to see Saint Nick arrive for the Dickens on Centre Opening Ceremony, held on the main stage and featuring a reading of “Twas The Night Before Christmas.” The rest of the weekend, the stage will resound with an eclectic lineup of musical delights, including Dueling Pianos, the Charlie Walker Band, Crescendo Amelia, Yancy Clegg, Gabriel Arnold, and more. On Centre Street, you’ll enjoy the sounds of Voices of St. Augustine Carolers & Joey & Jeanie throughout the event. For the young— and young at heart—you won’t want to miss the Kid’s Zone on 2nd Street. And everyone will have fun playing Victorian games, including hoop & stick, ornament toss, train rides, and letter writing to Saint Nick. Inspired by Charles Dickens’, A Christmas Carol, Dickens on Centre started last year as an opportunity for visitors and locals to experience the timeless magic of Christmas downtown while having an overall impact on tourism. “This festival is so effective at showcasing the beauty and vibrancy of our district – and at a very opportune time of year!” explains Jeff Kurtz, executive director of Fernandina Beach Main Street. “Many small businesses rely heavily on increased

www.AmeliaIslander.com

sales volume during the holiday season, and we know that visitors like what they see when they experience downtown. The net effect is that the event not only adds to the quality of life, but it also adds to the local economy.” Local businesses are excited about Dickens on Centre, with the holiday shoppers it brings, and especially the friendly competition in the storefront window decorating contest. “Visitors to the festival are invited to vote—using their mobile devices—on their favorite windows,” Amy explains. Visitors also have a great opportunity to make memories with the photo opportunities and props scattered around downtown or in the pocket park with a Boston Photography formal photo with Saint Nick. Amelia Island’s art and historic districts are collaborating with Dickens on Centre. “The Amelia Island Museum of History’s annual Holiday Home Tour is the first weekend of December and functions as the anchor event for Dickens on Centre, which takes place the following weekend,” explains the Museum’s Executive Director Phyllis Davis. “In tandem with Dickens on Centre, we are thrilled to offer Centre Street Tours, an opportunity to discover the fascinating stories of the people and architecture of the 1800s. Both activities are a wonderful way for us to share our history with both residents and visitors and to transport them back in time to Amelia’s ‘Golden Age.’” For more information, visit the Museum’s website at ameliamuseum.org. In the same neighborhood, Amelia Community Theatre will present “Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol Musical.” From December 1 to 17, this lighthearted musical interpretation of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol will be on stage, with music from all genres including gospel, country, rock, and jazz. Visit ameliacommunitytheatre. org for more information. As you prepare for the Christmas traditions, we invite you to come downtown and experience traditions of Amelia Island’s Christmases past. For a full schedule and event details, visit www.ameliaislandchristmas.com.

S

ince its founding in September 2010, the Amelia Island Club has quietly prospered on the south side of Amelia Island. Membership in the Amelia Island Club has grown to over 1,400 single and family members across a range of classifications, with an additional 50 reserved slots. Following an exhaustive national search, David Shepler became the general manager and COO of the Club in 2015, bringing with him 30 years of experience in private club management at such locations as Thunderbird Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California, the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, and several other prestigious clubs. One of David’s first acts as general manager was the hiring of Executive Chef Rick Sordahl. Sordahl has a distinguished career, most recently as Executive Chef of the Amangani, a fullservice luxury hotel and spa in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. His previous experience also included stints as chef at the Longboat Key Club Resort and the Ocean Reef Club. In 2011, he received a personal invitation to cook in the elegant dining space at the James Beard House in New York City and become a member of the James Beard Southeastern Chefs Alliance. Daniel Boulud, Emeril Lagasse, Nobu Matsuhisa, Jacques Pépin, and Charlie Trotter are just a few of the distinguished chefs to have worked the kitchen at the Beard House in Greenwich Village. While Shepler and his management team handle day-today operations, the Board of Directors of the Club oversees operations and conducts strategic planning. Composed of member/owners elected by their peers, the current Board of Directors is led by President Elizabeth (Beth) Hughes. Beth is the daughter of former Maryland governor Harry Roe Hughes. She is a retired attorney with a distinguished career continued on next page.

at Venable LLP in Washington, D.C., and one of the many Amelia Island Club members who generously donate their time and money to a variety of worthwhile charities. In addition to her significant Club responsibilities, Beth currently serves as president of the Nassau Humane Society. When asked what makes the Amelia Island Club special, Hughes has a ready answer. “We are fortunate to have a spectacular natural setting,” she says, “with the ocean, protected dunes, marshlands, the canopy of live oaks draped in Spanish moss, and the wildlife. As a Club, we work hard to preserve and nurture that setting. “Secondly, we are fortunate to have hired a first-class service-oriented staff that runs the place with care and precision. But perhaps most importantly, we have a remarkable membership, very diverse in some ways, but certainly alike in our love for the beauty and charm of Amelia Island. For many of us, the Club serves as the hub of our social lives. Our member enrichment program includes presentations from internationally renowned local authors, a Mayo Clinic wellness series, theme dinners, and many other activities.” The Amelia Island Club is memberowned. Its properties include the Ocean Clubhouse, Long Point Golf course, and the Long Point Clubhouse. In addition, members have access and usage rights to specified Omni-owned facilities. pirate’s life

Slated to be auctioned off for charity soon, Petey the Pirate has lived a charmed life while standing guard at the Palace Saloon for the last 13 years. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY SHERRY GARBARINI

P

etey the Pirate has had a rough life. Besides standing watch at the entrance of the Palace Saloon for the past 13 years, he’s had to put up with a good deal of bad weather, pranksters, inebriated saloon-goers, and basic man-handling by tourists and locals alike. There’s not a visitor to Amelia Island that hasn’t had his or her picture taken with Ol’ Petey, nor a Fernandina Beach resident who hasn’t felt a kindred spirit in the Palace Saloon’s iconic statue. A friendly and familiar face in a world of chaos and turmoil, Petey has stood the test of time. Petey came to the Palace Saloon back in 2003, along with his cohort, Dick Tracy, who stood at Uncle Charlie’s, the Palace’s “back of the house” watering hole. Petey was an instant celebrity at Florida’s oldest bar, so much so that people wanted to take him home with them, and some people actually did. Petey was stolen one night, and then found later in the back of a pickup truck in an island hotel parking lot, thanks to the keen eyes of a local police officer. He was returned, none the worse for wear, and took his place back at his post, until he was stolen again in the wee hours of the morning. “A plea went out to Amelia Island residents to be on the lookout for Petey. We even offered a reward for his safe return,” says Johnny Miller, Palace bartender and Mayor of Fernandina Beach. “One day, a couple walking on the beach saw what they thought was Petey at a beachfront home. Alas, that pirate statue was merely a Petey look-alike, and the missing Petey was never found.” A new Petey was purchased, and it was decided that he should be chain-locked to the front of the Palace. “After the two Petey burglaries, it was decided that the pirate statue should be brought in at night,” says Miller. “We just couldn’t take any more chances with him.” The second Petey stood strong at his post until he was knocked over by a couple of bad storms. One of the falls broke his arm.

“First, his hook was broken off,” says Miller. “Then his entire arm came off, and we had a cast put on him, along with a sling.” Petey received a great deal of sympathy from saloon-goers, until a raucous group of British sailors stationed at Kings Bay snatched off the broken arm and went on the lam with it. “We never got the arm back,” says Miller, shaking his head sadly. “It must be somewhere in England now.” Poor Ol’ Petey was retired from his post, and a third Petey was purchased from LM Treasures, a California novelty company that specializes in life-size statues. He is well-guarded by the Palace staff, and Ol’ Petey is set to be auctioned off for charity in the coming months. So the next time you belly up to the bar at the Palace Saloon and bartender Johnny Miller slides a mug down the bar to you, remember that Petey the Pirate, along with his pals, all the ghosts from ten decades past at the Palace, join in drinking to your health.

SOUTHERN LIVING PLANT COLLECTION

sassy scents New arrivals Evergreen Stella Daylily, Sassy Grass, and Scentamazing Gardenia bring eclectic beauty, texture, and tantalizing aromas to your garden BY BETTY MORRELL

R

eaders, garden lovers and friends, we are approaching the end of another year. It’s the season for family traditions, love, happiness, and joy. The youngsters are excited, and we oldsters are exhausted, but this season brings all kinds of people together to celebrate the holidays, and we gather to celebrate the same thing—the joys of life past and the joys of life to come! One of the joys in my recent past was devouring all the information and the incredible beauty of all the plants at the National Growers Association Show. I am going to continue to share with you my discoveries of new plants for the upcoming season. As I was strolling down one aisle, a beautiful golden yellow daylily caught my eye. It was the new Evergreen Stella Daylily. These lovely golden trumpets are very fragrant and they bloom in spring, summer, and fall. They grow 12 to 14 inches in height and spread rapidly. This Southern Living plant is a great addition to any garden. I discovered another Southern Living plant that turned out to be a

ground cover. I get so many requests for ground covers, and this darling new one is called Sassy Grass. It resembles the blue-eyed grass, but it has clusters of dainty violet-blue flowers on short stalks, blooming above dark green, grass-like foliage in late spring through early summer. Sassy Grass is an excellent perennial for borders, tucked among crevices and rocks, or as edgings and ground covers. It forms a compact clump that gently spreads. Sassy Grass is an evergreen, and it grows in full sun to part-shade. It is 18 inches high by 18 inches wide. Deadhead this plant year round, and trim it back in the fall. I love this little plant! While at the show, my eyes did not detect this next plant, but my nose sure did. Tantalizing scents have been supplied

by gardenias in Southern gardens for decades, and I sniffed out a terrific new one called the Scentamazing Gardenia. Yep, I was truly in love again, as my absolutely favorite flower is the gardenia. Create a stir in your garden next spring with Scentamazing Gardenia, which will re-bloom from spring through fall with fragrant, single, white blossoms. You’ll enjoy these intoxicating early blooms against the plant’s dark evergreen foliage. Use this wonderful plant as an accent, or put it into a container where you can enjoy it close up. Or if you can imagine the affect of a mass planting, that would be heavenly! Plant it in full sun to part shade, and fertilize once a year in early spring. Prune after flowering. This plant is only 2 1/2 to 3 feet tall and the same in width. I am asking Santa for this one, and I hope you get one too. (By the way, Walmart carries this plant in season.) If you have any questions, you can email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening! And Season’s Greeting and a Happy New Year to all!

ex and Melanie Milburn, originally from Atlanta, saw potential in the well-located house on South Fletcher Avenue, and they took their time in its successful renovation. The original house was built in 1986. They worked with local architect John Dodd and completed the 15-month renovation with builder Patrick McCarthy. In redesigning their Amelia Island home, they wanted a place that was a contrast to their very traditional Atlanta home. The oceanfront home’s dramatic views are maximized by the generous porches that dominate the front facade of the home. The porches measure 40 feet across and are 17 feet deep, providing lots of additional living space and protection from the early morning sun.

The renovation has provided a home that perfectly suits the lifestyle of its owners. The main level bedroom is a guest suite, with another guest suite and the master bedroom on the third level. A study or “flex” room, as the couple calls it, is between the two third-floor bedrooms. The Milburn’s credit their builder, Pat McCarthy, with many innovations in the home’s renovations. One example are the unique floors throughout the home. The special treatment included began with a layer of pine flooring, followed by layers of paint and, finally, careful sanding. The Milburn’s 56 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • DECEMBER 2016

were thrilled with the final effect. “It’s perfect for a beachside home; it shows nothing!” says Melanie. One thing that the couple brought from their traditional Atlanta home is their striking collection of landscape oil paintings, all traditionally framed. The couple started their collecting more than twenty years ago. Their first paintings were from 19th-century European artists, primarily landscape and pastoral scenes, produced by various members of the Shayer family, Alfred Vickers, Henry Boddington, and Etty Horton, a female artist, which was less common during this era. The Milburns were so thrilled with the tree that they purchased the decorations to be used for years to come. Amelia Tavern RESTAURANT & BREWPUB Offering distinctive small plates and dishes with fresh, local ingredients, Amelia Tavern serves great food, signature cocktails, and their own craft beer in a stylish setting. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

A

melia Tavern opened on Centre Street earlier this year to rave reviews from Amelia Island residents and visitors alike. Offering small plates and simple dishes based on coastal Florida and Georgia recipes, and using locally-sourced ingredients, Amelia Tavern presents a stylish modern bistro environment. I recently visited Amelia Tavern for lunch with my friend Sonia, and we were delighted to see Chef Wes Cox at the helm in the kitchen. Cox has created his small plate menu with the idea that diners like to try a variety of dishes, and Sonia and I were eager to sample some of his fare. Our server Ashley started us off with a giant Pretzel with Welsh Rarebit sauce. This pretzel is so big it is served hanging from a hook, and it was larger than my head! We got a good laugh from the presentation, and then as we started eating, we realized this was a pretty serious pretzel. Perfectly baked, hot and crisp on the outside, soft and yeasty within, the pretzel was covered with coarse salt and served with a bowl of melted beer cheese, made with sharp cheddar and Amelia Tavern’s own IPA. A decadent pretzel, indeed! Chef Wes then brought us a Roasted Pork Eggroll, filled with tender, shredded pork and braised red cabbage, served with coarse grain mustard and onion and bacon jam. Sonia and I loved this dish, which had all sorts of savory and sweet elements about it, and a super crispy egg roll wrapper. Our next small plate was actually a martini glass filled to the rim with Shrimp Ceviche, served with hot radish, cilantro, lime juice, and serrano chile. This is true ceviche, made from local shrimp, chilled, with a clean balance of flavors and acidity, and served with a corn tostado. A delicious, fresh seafood dish. Chef Wes then treated us to a small plate of Crab Cakes with Corn Avocado Salsa and Ancho-Chipotle Sauce. The crab cakes are all-crab, nicely browned on the outside and bursting with tender, sweet crab. The ancho-chipotle sauce was a perfect accompaniment, slightly smoky and spicy, and the corn salsa was creamy with the addition of the avocado. Carol Prescott, Amelia Tavern’s general manager, loves to bake, and it shows. Chef Wes brought us a piece of her specialty, Pumpkin Cheesecake, and we could definitely taste

the love that went into this dessert. Served with the richest whipped cream I’ve ever tasted, I would say this cheesecake was the perfect end to a perfect lunch! Upon another trip to Amelia Tavern, I joined some friends for drinks, and Amelia Tavern’s mixologists are whipping up some amazing signature cocktails, like “Lilet Me Down”, created with Lilet blanc, St.-Germain elderflower liquor, and ginger beer topped with champagne. Now that’s my kind of cocktail! The Prickly Pear Margarita is also a hit, along with their own craft beers, wines, and traditional, bountiful cocktails. Amelia Tavern is bright, eclectic, roomy, and filled with high energy and professional staff people to make your dining experience the best it can be! hristmas is right around the corner, and it’s time to stock the bar for holiday entertaining. When I entertain, I like to have a selection of liquor for friends who prefer a cocktail to wine or beer. Mitchell Wickless at Five Points Package Store is my go-to guy for cocktail ideas, and he is always eager to share some of the new offerings available for the holidays. Mitchell suggests an inventory of scotch, whiskey, bourbon, vodka, and gin, a few bottles of red and white wine, and some champagne on hand for basic drink requests. “If you have plenty of mixers, like Coke, cranberry juice, orange juice, tomato juice, club soda, and ginger ale, you can create lots of different drink combinations,” says Mitchell. “And don’t forget that garnishes like olives, cocktail onions, lemons, limes, cherries, and celery make cocktails special.” If you don’t want to stock a bar for just one party, he suggests serving a signature

cocktail or two, served in tall pitchers or punch bowls, such as eggnog, bourbon punch, or sparkling sangria-type drinks. “Also, Irish coffee is a great holiday drink,” he continues. “It makes for an easy dessert, topped with a bit of whipped cream.” Other flavored liqueurs can be added to coffee or poured over ice cream, fruit, or even cake, to make a signature holiday dessert. When shopping for spirits, Mitchell suggests purchasing “top shelf” liquor because it truly has a better flavor. For wine, see what is most popular amongst your friends, though typically, more people drink white than red. Lastly, be sure to provide sparkling cider or a nonalcoholic punch for your teetotaling friends and designated drivers. Five Points Package Store offers spirit tastings during the holidays, so check with the store for their next event. For more information, visit Five Points at 2112 South 8th Street or call them at (904) 261-3640.
