Every season on Amelia has its particular joys, but the Christmas season is a particularly joyful time. Amelia Island really knows how to celebrate the holidays. We at the Islander have been fortunate in years past to feature some of the selfless work that Amelia Island residents do during the Christmas season through organizations like Joy to the Children, Barnabas, and the many other charities that tap into the island’s abiding generosity. Christmas is a season for sharing with those in need, gathering to share life’s blessings with our families, and for quiet reflection. It’s a time of year for remembering the good things we have experienced, and for focusing on what is most important in life. When we reflect on our blessings, we feel gratitude, which makes the Christmas season a time of joy, and joy is never in short supply on Amelia Island this time of year. When we celebrate the season, we can choose from countless opportunities for making merry. In our cover story, we share with you as many of them as possible, like the Amelia Island Museum of History’s Holiday Home Tour, the Amelia Island B&B Association’s Cookie Tour, the wonderful “Dickens on Centre” festival in downtown Fernandina Beach, “Breakfast with Santa” and the S.S. Amelia—the world’s largest gingerbread pirate ship— at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, plus a range of musical and dramatic interpretations of the holiday season, including “It’s A Wonderful Life” at Amelia Community Theatre, a big band Christmas with Crescendo Amelia, and jazz Christmas shows with the Dynamic Les DeMerle Trio with Bonnie Eisele. And that’s only scratching the surface! Local churches have lots of Christmas concerts and plays, the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort and The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island are bustling with fun events, and our favorite shops have plenty of special holiday happenings. Get the most out of the holiday season this year! Cultivate a spirit of gratitude, spend time with those you love, give thanks to God, and share in the good cheer. With the happy memories we make, may a spirit of humble thankfulness take root in our hearts. Elsewhere in this issue, we meet an Amelia Island resident with a lifelong passion for trains, who has recreated in his home a scene from the Christmas movie, The Polar Express; feature a group of Wild Amelia Junior Naturalists, led by Lauri DeGaris, who are creating a life-size right while sculpture to raise awareness; present a “Fernandina Faces” profile of Eileen Shannon Moore; get some tips on sharing Christmas cheer this holiday season; and much more. From our families to yours, we at the Amelia Islander Magazine wish you Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and a very Happy New Year! See you around the island!

it’s a picnic on the beach, a fishing excursion with the kids, or Christmas shopping with friends. Amelia Island residents celebrate the season in so many ways. Some spend Christmas volunteering for our local charities. Others spend the day on the water. Others sing in the church choir. Many spend Christmas working at our fine resorts, our community hospital, and our local Top: Children’s storytime at Dickens on Centre. Above left: A Christmas ornament at Artistic Florist. find time for our families and friends. It is a joyous season, a time to reflect on everything that is good in the world, and to appreciate our many blessings. The Historic District’s holiday season is already in full swing, kicked off in November with their annual Black Friday Pajama Party and Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. America’s Youth lights up downtown Fernandina Beach with the annual Lighted Christmas Parade on December 7 at 6 p.m., celebrating “A Musical Christmas,” the prelude to the third annual Dickens on Centre Festival. and a variety of vendors selling seasonal gifts and wares. Inspired by Charles Dickens’ novella A Christmas Carol, Dickens on Centre transforms downtown Fernandina into a classic English village, sure to enliven your Christmas spirit. Think chestnuts roasting, carolers strolling, and readings of “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Shop for the perfect Christmas gift in the vendor marketplace on Centre Street, along Artist Alley on North 2nd Street, or with one of the wonderful local merchants in downtown Fernandina Beach. Save yourself time and energy by having your holiday gifts wrapped by the parishioners of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. New to “Dickens” this year is the inaugural “Run Like the Dickens” 1-mile sprint on Main Beach. Held on December 9 at 8 a.m., the sprint is open to people of all ages, and it is a fundraiser for Fernandina Beach Middle School’s AVID program. Cost is $15 per runner. For more information or to register, contact Robin Lentz at (904) 206-0122 or marathonrobin@yahoo.com. Other “Dickens” events include a Kid Zone, history tours presented by the Amelia Island Museum of History, adult beverage station at Fezziwig’s Courtyard, street theatre, and much more. While you’re out and about on December 9, be sure to visit stop at the local galleries during Second Saturday Artrageous Artwalk for local art and unique gifts. Another version of “A Christmas Carol” will performed at Amelia Musical Playhouse December 15, 16, and 17 as a live radio play directed by Jill Dillingham. AMELIA ISLAND RANKED #3 IN TOP 10 U.S. ISLANDS Northeast Florida’s Amelia Island has placed among the Top 10 U.S. Islands in the 2017 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards. Amelia Island finished in the #3 spot and was the only Florida island included in a list comprised of destinations such as Maui, Nantucket, and Oahu in the 30th annual competition. “Amelia Island continues to enchant visitors, resulting in an ever-growing list of accolades and recognitions,” said Gil Langley, president and CEO of the Amelia Island Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Readers have voted our island paradise into this elite group of global destinations eight of the last nine years. It’s a true testament to Amelia’s enduring appeal, and an invaluable endorsement from discerning travelers.” Condé Nast Traveler announced the results of its 30th annual Readers’ Choice Awards on October 17, ranking the best hotels, resorts, cities, islands, airlines, and cruise lines in the world. More than 300,000 dedicated readers took part in the 30th annual Readers’ Choice Awards survey, submitting millions of ratings and more than 100,000 comments, voting on a record-breaking thousands of hotels and resorts, hundreds of cities, islands, and cruise ships, and dozens of airlines and airports. BAPTIST MEDICAL CENTER NASSAU RECOGNIZED FOR SUPPORT OF BARNABAS The Florida Hospital Association has awarded Baptist Medical Center Nassau the Community Benefit Achievement Award for hospitals under 150 beds for 2017. The honor was presented to Baptist Nassau for its support of Barnabas Center, Inc., a safety net provider for lower-income individuals and families in Nassau County which provides basic health services for those who cannot afford health care. Since 2005, when Barnabas Center began providing basic health services, Baptist Nassau, a 62bed, multi-specialty community hospital, answered the call for help, supporting the free clinic, organized in compliance with the state’s Access to Health Care Act, by offering diagnostic services, such as lab work and X-rays, at no cost to patients. For over 12 years, Baptist Nassau has provided millions of dollars of in-kind contributions to the health services clinic at Barnabas, including more than $2.5 million this year alone. Nearly 1,600 Barnabas clients were seen at one of four Baptist hospitals in the past 12 months, the large majority at Baptist Nassau, which is located only a few miles from the Barnabas Center. Baptist Nassau physicians, nurses, and medical assistants continue to volunteer at the Barnabas walk-in clinic, which operates from 5 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday.

lue Door Artists opened almost two decades ago, and it continues to offer visitors who climb the colorful steps at 205-1/2 Centre Street in downtown Fernandina Beach a fascinating glimpse into the working studios and galleries of its unique collective of local resident artists. They pride themselves on featuring some of the island’s finest original art in a variety of media to suit every taste and budget. Acrylic, oil, and watercolor paintings can be found, as well as alcohol inks, photography, collage, jewelry, and weaving. When you visit Blue Door, you’ll always find a selection of new art and creative endeavors, and you can watch the artists work through their innovative processes. Each of the eleven individuals who comprise the group has a distinctive personality and artistic style. The group includes artists Sharon Badenoch, Suzanne Batchelor, Cori Beychok, Theresa Daily, Liz Dion, Sharon Haffey, Jane Hedgecock, Charli Leniston,
Georganna Mullis, Lynne Pilkerton, and Susan Scarborough. Once a month, Blue Door is open until 8 p.m. for Amelia Island’s Second Saturday Artrageous Artwalk. Visitors can enjoy browsing, socializing, and speaking with the artists who create and sell their artwork “at the top of the colorful stairs.” It’s a great time to view new work by a different featured artist and see the artists in their personal working environments. December is an excellent time to visit the gallery since many special items, including greeting cards, prints, smaller paintings, baskets, and jewelry, can be purchased for holiday gift-giving. When you purchase holiday gifts at Blue Door, you’re supporting local artists, while the recipients of your gifts will be enjoying handcrafted, one-of-a-kind items. The Blue Door is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit their Facebook page or their website at www.bluedoorartists.com and click on each artist’s name to view her personal website.

Cape House
JESS HENDERSON PHOTO
n 2016, Amelia Island residents Lance and Lauren Jones, along with Wes and Tiffany Hinton, embarked on an anniversary trip to Cape Town, South Africa. Upon arrival, they fell in love with the scenery, architecture, color schemes, and the crisp, coastal-chic style around every corner. Enchanted by its beauty, the four friends developed a plan to open a home and hospitality store that would combine Tiffany’s love for interiors and Lance’s love for the gourmet, and Cape House opened its doors at 4810 First Coast Highway in July. “At Cape House, we have everything that makes a house a home,” says Lance. “In addition to furniture, lighting, rugs, and a design room, we also feature small vignettes throughout the store, making the space feel like you’re walking into someone’s home.” A trip to Cape House is an inspiring experience, with its warm, welcoming atmosphere and attention to detail. The store features Visual Comfort, Jamie Young, Palecek, CR Laine, Imagine Home, and more. The 2,400 square feet store includes a design room, providing convenient access to additional finishes, fabrics, and products to help complete any project. “It’s great to hear the response from people walking through the door. They’re impressed with the aesthetic and frequently comment that they don’t feel like they have to travel to Jacksonville or Atlanta anymore,” says Lance. Cape House offers a fine selection of gifts for the holidays and special events. For more information, call (904) 844-2389, visit www. shopcapehouse.com or follow @shopcapehouse.
obyn Branch changed her business model three years ago as her main focus became design in the luxury interior markets. “We have turned our business into a thriving studio while maintaining our retail accounts,” says Robyn. “I prefer to work developing longtime tried-and-true relationships with our customers and vendors. My association with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) helps me to continue to learn and stay current.” Robyn Branch Design won a first place design award from ASID in 2016, and a first and second place in 2017. “It was a great moment for my staff to be in such fine company,” says Robyn. “ASID has graciously welcomed me, and I’m thrilled to associate with talents locally and nationally.” With a staff of five, Robyn attends many trade shows, while also completing continuing education requirements in all areas of design. “We also work with other designers and welcome collaboration,” says Robyn. “The collaborative spirit is very important, and ASID helps to facilitate that and provides support when we need it. I will also complete the CAPS program this year. As our island and our world ages, it is important to stay current on lighting, mobility, and function.” Among Robyn’s strengths is her ability to see what can be —helping her clients achieve the ultimate possibility for their homes. “Listening, gently guiding, and caring are the tools of our trade!” says Robyn. the magic of Christmas Amelia Island’s Steve Lukefahr got his first train as a kid, and his lifelong love of trains culminated in a painstaking display from the Christmas movie, The Polar Express. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTOS BY WILLIAM RASER
S
teve Lukefahr received his first train set for Christmas when he was six years old, but it wasn’t until the mid-1980s that his love for trains peaked into a full-fledged hobby. In fact, after Steve retired from his career as a pilot for TWA, he purchased a retail train store called Trains LTD in St. Louis, Missouri, where he sold and bought “toy” trains to and from collectors all over the world. It’s no surprise to those who know Steve that when the movie The Polar Express came out in 2004, it would become his favorite film. Starring Tom Hanks as an eccentric train
conductor, the movie tells the tale of a young boy embarking on a magical adventure to the North Pole on a train called The Polar Express, where he learns about friendship, bravery, and the spirit of Christmas. “I love the magic of Christmas,” says Steve. “The movie was about believing, about a time when the holiday really meant something. It resonated with me.” Steve purchased the first Polar Express train from Lionel, upgrading every year with trains that now provide full sounds, synchronized smoke output, and full remote control, including announcements.

But Steve went way beyond most train aficionados’ rumpus room collections. He and his wife Jerie, built their Amelia Island home entirely around their “bonus room,” where Steve’s Polar Express display is the heart of his train collection which includes Southern and Union Pacific trains, landscapes, figurines, and a plethora of historic scenes. Steve had his Polar Express display fabricated at TW TrainWorx, a company that specializes in designing, producing, shipping, installing, and maintaining all things model train-related. Located in Dallas, Texas, the company provides custom heirloom train furniture and full layouts to train enthusiasts and beginners alike. “It took them about 9 months to complete The Polar Express,” says Steve. “Their attention to detail is remarkable. For anyone who has seen the movie, the various scenes are represented throughout the display.” From the houses where the train picks up the doubting children, to the snowy, winding mountain paths, to the colossal clock tower at Santa’s village in the North Pole, the layout is truly a work of art that draws the observer into the story, just as the movie takes the viewer into a magical world of a child’s imagination. When Steve uses the special remote control to turn on the trains and

displays, newbies to the world of trains drop their jaws in awe. Not only do the trains run around the tracks, but they make real train sounds, including the voices of the conductors and the sound of whistles, and spew real “smoke” from their engines. The passenger cars are lighted and filled with tiny passengers. The “towns” that the trains run through are replete with homes, billboards, trees, bridges, and shops, including Jerie’s father’s welding shop, called Modern Supply, and the East River’s Hell Gate Bridge in New York City. There’s even a panorama of Fernandina Beach’s harbor, with shrimp boats, the Salty Pelican Restaurant, the Fernandina Beach train station and passenger platform. The “town” of St. Louis, Missouri, includes its famous Route 66 Ted Drewes Custard Stand and a scale replica of the St. Louis Union Station. For the young and the young at heart, Steve’s train collection brings a sense of wonder to all the guests who visit the Lukefahr home, especially at Christmas. “Everyone loves trains, and people love to come by and see them in action,” says Steve, smiling. “I don’t collect as many as I used to, but I’m always working on a new vignette for the display, especially Lionel and Ives prewar trains, along with the 1950s trains I remember from my childhood.”

a labor of love Using oyster shells from Amelia Island’s beaches, Lauri DeGaris and the Wild Amelia Junior Naturalists will create a right whale sculpture to honor an endangered species. BY KAREN MILLER PHOTOS COURTESY OF LAURI DEGARIS
T
he right whale is one of the most endangered whales in the world, fighting for their lives as they endure ship strikes and fishing gear entanglement. Of the 450 to 500 that remain, only 120 are females mature enough for reproduction, and they migrate from New England to the warm waters off Northeast Florida each winter to give birth. Amelia Island’s Lauri DeGaris, a marine biologist and artist, has been working to raise awareness about the plight of the whales with her art. In 2012, she created a life-size right whale calf at American Beach, which was fabricated completely of oyster shells. It is now part of an exhibit at the American Beach Museum. “The sculpture was named after The Beach Lady of American Beach, MaVynne Betsch,” says DeGaris. “MaVynne donated a tremendous amount of support for the study of right whales in Northeast Florida. She even had a female right whale named in her honor!”
On December 30 at Main Beach, DeGaris will be creating another right whale sculpture—this time a life-size 40-foot figure—and inviting the community to celebrate the arrival of female right whales in our area. “We are asking everyone to participate by bringing oyster shells they’ve found on the beach to be used for the project,” says DeGaris. “Shelling is fantastic right now, as northeast winds and summer storms have deposited many on our beaches.” DeGaris will be joined by members of the Wild Amelia Junior Naturalist Program, headed by Robyn Nemes, who heard about DeGaris’ latest project and was eager to help. “Children in the program will be collecting shells on the beach prior to the event, and then helping with the creation of the life-size right whale under Lauri’s expert artistic guidance,” says Nemes. “I learned of Lauri’s work when I saw a seashell creation of hers on the beach, and I contacted her to see if she might help coordinate a similar effort with the Wild Amelia Junior

Naturalist children for the ‘Year of the Shark,’ and again for ‘The Year of the Pelican.’ In addition to awareness activities like this, Wild Amelia Junior Naturalists participate in classes, water quality testing, and service events such as beach clean-ups and Greenway projects. Both Nemes and DeGaris are members of Wild Amelia, a group of nature-minded citizens that works to educate residents and visitors about Amelia Island’s bioregion through events and programs designed to educate and entertain, while promoting a conservation ethic. DeGaris coordinates the group’s Wild Nites Nature Presentation Series. This month’s lecture will be held on December 12 with Katie Jackson from the Florida Wildlife Commission, who will present a program on right whales. The programs are held at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the Peck Center, located at 516 South 10th Street. One explanation for the whale’s name is that right whales were named by whalers who identified them as the “right” whale to kill on a hunt due to the plentiful oil and baleen they could provide. “After centuries of being hunted for their oil and baleen, right whales today are fighting to exist,” says DeGaris. “We’re hoping this project will raise more awareness about the plight of the right whale. Bring your collected oyster shells to Main Beach on December 30 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. We will need thousands of shells to complete this loving tribute to a species in critical danger of extinction.”

T
here are few things that have happened in Fernandina Beach in the last twenty-five years that Eileen Shannon Moore hasn’t started, been involved in, or supported. Moore was the owner of a popular gallery, antique, and gift store on Centre Street for 18 years, and she was active in art shows in the region for decades. Her Eileen’s Art and Antiques offered an eclectic collection of wonderful art, antiques, jewelry, and gifts. This little blond dynamo has been behind lots of innovative island projects, including the Farmer’s Market, the Parade of Paws, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival, Flowering Fernandina, and Centre’d Women, to name a few. She was recognized in 2003 with the Art of Caring Award for outstanding volunteer service to the community by Volunteer Jacksonville. Moore grew up in Jacksonville and graduated from Florida State University, where she received her Master’s in Home Economics. A talented artist, she was involved in the early days of outdoor art shows around the state and regionally. She has displayed her distinctive beach and landscape paintings at Amelia Island’s annual shrimp festival since its earliest days. In 1999, Moore and another artist bought the building on the corner of Center and 7th streets. Their shop, Eileen’s Art and Antiques, became a local energy center, where artists and people involved in island projects could gather. Encouraged by Moore, a group of local movers and shakers met there to brainstorm with Christopher Rex, principal cellist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Could a Chamber Music Festival be successful on Amelia Island? Their dream came true, and the successful festival is now in its seventeenth year. Eileen brought another dynamic group together in 2002 to begin the process of creating an island farmer’s market. Research was done, and talks were scheduled with the city. The first market was held weekly in Central Park, and it later moved to 7th Street between Centre and Alachua streets, where it thrives today.
Moore’s appreciation of the flowers and plants decorating the streets of places where she had traveled resulted in the creation of Flowering Fernandina. She wanted flowers and plantings on every corner of Centre Street. She enlisted volunteers, raised money, and worked with the city to make it happen. Fernandina Beach’s beautiful downtown has been enhanced by her efforts. One of Moore’s more memorable creative efforts involved a giant chess board laid out on the street in front of her 7th Street house. Special permits were secured from the city. Guests came dressed as chess pieces, and actual chess games were played. Moore married Stewart Ira in 2012 and, in keeping with her love of Fernandina Beach, they were married in the historic courthouse by Judge Foster and traveled down Centre Street in a horse and buggy to the marina, where they left for their honeymoon on Cumberland Island. Between them, the couple has five children and seven grandchildren, with one great-grandchild. They enjoy their annual trips to the Abacas in the Bahamas in the Miss Eileen, a 55-foot trawler boat that sleeps eight. Moore’s energy, passion, and creativity have made a difference in many island projects. She cares passionately about her Amelia Island community, and she throws her talent and time into things that make a difference.

in the garden Pancake™ Arborvitae
gladsome gardenias Rescheduled thanks to Hurricane Irma, the Florida Growers Association show featured lots of new plants, like a Gardenia named Buttons and the Pancake Arborvitae. BY BETTY MORRELL
D
ecember is the time for the holidays, as we prepare for a new year with lots of new plants to adorn our gardens. You may not be thinking of gardening at this moment, but I want to share with you what I discovered at the recent Florida Growers Association show. One grower at the show told me he lost almost half of his stock, while others were still hunting for plants that disappeared with Hurricane Irma. The storm crippled nurseries and limited what could be displayed at the show. Plants that were usually shown with eye-catching blooms were bloomless this year, while some plants scheduled for display had lost all of their leaves and were rather bare. However, I did find some pretty new plants. Not all of them had blooms, but photographs told the story. I found many beautiful perennials for 2018, which I will tell you about after the holidays. In the meantime, here are some new plants, trees, and shrubs that really caught my eye. A baby Gardenia (my favorite shrub) has been born named Buttons
TIP OF T HE M O N T H If your gardenias drop buds before they bloom or have brown or yellowing leaves, they are too dry. Keep the soil consistently damp but not soggy, with one inch of water per week.
because it’s as cute as a button. It features double 2-inch, fragrant blossoms, which cover this plant. It grows 1 1/2 to 2 feet in height and width, a compact shrub with a mounding habit that deserves a spot in your garden. With its dark glossy green leaves, this is an evergreen shrub that likes full sun with some afternoon shade. Fertilize Gardenias during the growing season (March to October) with a diluted fertilizer for acid-loving plants. Gardenias like soil that is rich in nutrients. Add plenty of organic matter to the soil like peat moss or manure to enhance the growth of your plant. Walking around a display garden of shrubs, flowers, and trees, I came across an intriguing little blue plant. I soon

learned that it was a new Thuja, also known as Arborvitae, named Pancake. It is a finely-textured, sage-green evergreen with a low, dense, rounded habit. Its foliage is slightly blue in fall and winter. It is hardy and easy to maintain, and it thrives in full sun, but will tolerate some shade. It is attractive as a low border, low hedge, or in a rock garden. It reaches 1 foot high and 2 feet wide. To care for Pancake, follow a watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep extensive root system. Watering can be reduced after the plant is established. Feed with an all-purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. This plant is worth a place in your landscape, either as a specimen or mass planting. I can hardly wait to tell you about all the other new plants, there are so many… and 2018 is going to be the Year of the Roses! If you have any questions, please email me at bamorrell@aol.com. I wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a New Year filled with good health, happiness, and peace!

ne of the houses featured on the 2016 Amelia Island Museum of History Holiday Home Tour charmed visitors with its “Christmas ladies.” Marty Engle and Reid Herlihy’s home on North 3rd Street was filled with wonderfully whimsical ladies made out of old Christmas trees, fresh storm-damaged greens, and an array of recycled fabric, ornaments, and lights. Truly a Cinderella story, the two-story brick home had badly needed help and renovation. Early photos of this turnof-the-century house show a broken chain link fence, a sagging roof, and overgrown waist-high weeds. The restored home now boasts a beautifully landscaped lot with palms, tropical plants, a large magnolia, and a white picket fence. Marty Engle and Reid Herlihy have transformed the two-story “folk house” into

a wonderfully whimsical second home that welcomes friends from around the world. Marty Engle and her late husband, John Howard, first found Amelia Island in 2002 on their way to Greyfield Inn on Cumberland Island. Like so many before them, they fell in love with Amelia’s historic district and the charming shops and restaurants on Centre Street. They returned within two months and spent time with a realtor. While looking for a home, they stumbled across an “oddity,” as Marty describes it, on North 3rd Street. Originally built by Nathanial Borden, original owner of Villa Las
Palmas, the house served as the offices for the Borden Lumber Company. Elizabeth Dion, local architect and talented artist, was challenged with taking their ideas and creating a buildable plan. Within a year, construction was underway. When asked to open their home for the 2016 Amelia Island Museum of History Holiday Home Tour, Marty decided to do something special for the annual tour. Pinterest, a favorite website for Marty, showcased Christmas mannequins made from a variety of materials transformed into fanciful ladies. For the museum home tour, she created her own group of Christmas ladies. Recycling and upcycling vintage “stuff,” she

recycled Christmas trees, old ornaments, lights, clothing, and all sorts of odds and ends, including an old bridesmaid’s dress! Six Christmas ladies charmed the crowds that came out for last year’s tour. The first lady, deemed The Crown, graced the front porch. The only “fresh” lady, she was created using cedar branches salvaged from storm-damaged trees. The pleasingly plump queen flaunted a wrap made from a luxurious turquoise silk remnant. As visitors came through the front door, they were greeted by a tall and elegant lady inspired by Glenda the Good Witch, dressed in blues and silvers, with white twinkle lights highlighting every detail of
her elegance. Continuing through the dining room and into the large family room, visitors encountered The Scarlet Lady, standing elegantly in a far corner of the room. Sporting the traditional reds and the greens of the season, she even had wonderful red satin dancing shoes. On the kitchen counter, the small Kitchen Girl, made from one of the cinnamon brooms popular during the holidays, was a gift of Lee Hamer, a neighbor and friend. Upstairs, the periwinkle guest room was graced by the precious Little Ballerina, dressed in a white paper wreath tutu and whimsical Dr. Seuss-colored Christmas balls. Down the hall in the master

bedroom, Madame Music had her own charm. Made from an old bridesmaid dress, her bustier was overflowing with curled pages from old player-piano sheet music rolls. She was made available through a raffle during the Christmas tours and now enjoys a new home in the historic district. The house is decorated with a selection of antiques and treasured family collectibles. Instead of shutters or curtains, many of the windows have small European stained-glass windows as accent pieces. The large family room and kitchen area is made for entertaining. One cannot help but notice a large bird cage in one corner of the room, as well as a large
portrait by David Nackashi of the couple’s pets, their beloved parrots. Their flock includes Ethel, a Moluccan Cockatoo; Earl Grey, an African Grey; and Ruthie, an African Red Belly. The renovations continue. Currently under construction is a carriage house on the north side of the original house. Cotner Associates, Inc. created an innovative design, which will add a two-car garage and a small guest apartment, while completely re-orienting the front entrance of the house. Art Sanchez & his team are bringing the Cotner design to life. At Christmas this year, the North 3rd Street house will be full of friends and family, and perhaps a Lady of Christmas Past.

Café Karibo & KARIBREW With its relaxed ambience, shaded courtyard, and an eclectic menu with fresh seafood, Café Karibo and Karibrew Brew Pub is a favorite of locals and visitors alike. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER
M
y kids spend their time after school at the Bean School of Dance, next door to Café Karibo on North 3rd Street, which is where I met my daughter, Abigail, for dinner recently. While Abigail finished up at dance, I decided to enjoy a nice grown-up beverage. Behind the bar at Karibrew, the brew pub attached to Café Karibo, was my old friend Michael—Kirky to everyone else in town—and, boy, can he make an Old Fashioned. The bourbon tasted like a big hug, with the vanilla notes coupled with the essence of orange and cherry making for a lovely break between shifts on daddy duty. After moving to a table with my daughter, we got down to business. Abigail’s list of approved foods is only a couple of lines long. She’s a born vegetarian, which is fine except that there are only four vegetables she will eat. To my amazement, she agreed to try Karibo’s famous Veggie Burger. A serious compliment to the restaurant, she managed to eat half of it, sauce on the side of course. The burger is truly delicious all by itself, but I spread the guacamole and basil mayo on the remaining half and made short work of it. The richness of the mayo and avocado elevated the homemade veggie patty, taking it to a whole new level. I started my meal with an order of Bam Bam Shrimp. These shrimp were lightly breaded, deep fried, tossed with homemade Bam Bam sauce, and served over shredded romaine with cranberries in a light vinaigrette. I enjoyed this appetizer so much a few weeks earlier that I couldn’t wait to try it again. I offered Abbie a bite, but was met with her signature eye roll. I mistakenly figured that since she was going out on a limb with the veggie burger, perhaps we could stretch her culinary boundaries a little further. After thoroughly enjoying my appetizer, I opted to stay with shrimp for dinner and ordered the Chili Prawns. When I was in recently, I sat at the bar and a friend next to me ordered them and they looked like a hit. The Chili Prawns are indeed a hit, in fact a homerun with the bases loaded. Served with
coconut rice and sautéed vegetables, the shrimp were large and sweet, tossed in a chili sauce that was delicious and not overly spicy, which paired well with the rice. I encouraged Abigail to try the rice, which she did with only a bit of reluctance: she
shrugged her shoulders and looked at her phone. Chef, take a bow, that is high praise! I of course cleaned my plate without even a grain of the shoulder-shrugging rice left behind. When our server, Joy, offered dessert, Abigail came to life. This child loves strawberry cake, and Café Karibo’s offering checked all of her boxes: it was beautiful, it had strawberries, and it was a large slice. It was truly delicious, and only one of the many homemade desserts available that night. Café Karibo is a favorite spot for locals and is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday, Sunday for brunch, and lunch only on Mondays. It is located at 27 N. 3rd Street in downtown Fernandina Beach.

Christmas present BY KAREN MILLER
S
eems like just yesterday we were shaking the sand out of our flip flops after a warm day on the beach, and suddenly, the holidays are upon us, just like that! From trimming the Christmas tree to decorating your home and wrapping your gifts, there’s not a lot of extra time to plan a holiday party, in addition to your Christmas and New Year’s dinners. You’ll make the holiday a whole lot merrier by stocking your bar, wine rack, and beer cooler with fine liquors, boutique wines, and favorite brews well in advance of Christmas and New Year’s Eve. It’s not uncommon for friends and neighbors to stop over unexpectedly during the holidays, so it’s best to be prepared with a full bar, lots of ice, and yummy drink recipes up your sleeve. If you’re wondering what people are drinking these days, look to the past, and imbibe in the present. That means updating old cocktail recipes with new, trendy liquors, spices, and even herbs. Take a Tom Collins, for example. It’s traditionally made with gin, lemon juice, sugar, and club soda, but why not add a splash of pomegranate juice and a sprig of rosemary for a festive twist? Give mojitos a holiday flair by adding a splash of coconut milk or coconut rum. It’s like a snowstorm in a glass! Mitchell Wickless, manager of Five Points Package Store, suggests stocking your bar early in the season. “Lots of people come in and need advice on what’s popular this season,” says Wickless. “These days, it’s not just about your basic whiskey, rum, gin, and vodka, but what brands are popular during
the holidays, and this year we have some great new flavors, including Ole Smoky Salted Caramel and Mango Habanero Whiskies. Another new offering comes from a company that makes prohibition-style bourbon, which dates back to the early 1900s. Throwback cocktails are very popular this year.” Wickless, along with his wine and spirit vendors Steven Helmes from Southern Glazer Wine and Spirits and Mike Barnes from Coastal Wine, are eager to share their new flavors. “The liquor companies try to keep it fresh every holiday,” says Helmes. “The new flavors are fun to try, and really liven up a party!” When choosing wines for a holiday party, be sure to have more whites than reds, and offer a few bottles of bubbly, too, like Champagne or Prosecco. “Sparkling beverages make a party really special,” says Wickless. “And Proseccos have gotten even more popular than Champagne.” Some of your guests might be beer or hard cider drinkers, so try to stock the traditional favorites, along with a few artisan brews. “In addition to the proper glasses and a large supply of ice, make sure you have plenty of olives, cocktail onions, lemons, limes, cherries, celery, and the like,” says Wickless. “And many drinks call for glasses rimmed with various salts and sugars, so put those items on your shopping list, too.” Five Points Package Store offers spirit tastings every Friday evening during the month of December from 4 to 8 p.m. For more information, visit Five Points at 2112 South 8th Street, call them at (904) 261-3640, or visit their Facebook page.
